Monday scent of the day 11/26

Posted by Robin on 26 November 2018 250 Comments

It's Cyber Monday and Cake Day. Happy birthday Tina Turner! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm starting the week in Ormonde Jayne Ta'if.

Reminder: 11/30 will be Renegades Friday...wear a perfume by Mark Buxton, Bertrand Duchaufour or Geza Schoen, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    SotD = Eau de Guerlain

Wearing an olive green t-shirt and navy blue skinny chinos, smelling like the love child of a mint mojito and 4711.

Cake day!?!? I’m ON it! :D

    Tina Turner..
Between boyfriends her “Better be Good to Me” song was my mantra. It should be life long mantra in fact!

I am still wearing Frangipani by L. Bermuda. Not Bermuda weather here..I am still lemming a full bottle. Can anyone talk me off or over the ledge ;)

I’ve been wanting to smell the Lili Bermuda scents for a long time, where do you buy yours from?

My philosophy is that succumbing to temptation is the best way to alleviate it.

        HA! Love that line…

You have to take a trip to Bermuda or order a discovery sample set online.

Today I’m finishing off a sample of Costes Red that came with a recent Beautyhabit order. It’s a lovely calming, airy incense with a bit of woodsy spice and transparent rosiness. Doubt I’ll buy any, but if a bottle fell into my lap, I’d be pleased!

Well, I wear it to yoga class, but honestly it’s a skin scent after an hour or two, so not really a substitute for the perfume, unless you’re looking for subtlety.

I’m participating in the CP by going through the untouched Escentric Molecules discovery set that I received from a generous NSTer. First up is Escentric 01, which, when I first applied it smelled of pink peppercorns. It has devolved into a generic musky scent.

What’s you opinion of Tiger’s Nest? I have a sample and mean to try it before the year ends, but I am also curious what other NSters think of it.
I hope your puppy will like that healthier food soon. Maybe it’s just an acquired taste for her.

Good morning…..it was a bit painful for the kids (and me!) to get started after a long holiday weekend! :) Even the dog was slow to go out….

Kicking off the Christmas perfume season with Demeter Christmas Tree. The woodsy tree note is there, but there’s also a sweet, candy-like thing going on in the background…maybe sugarplums? Whatever it is, I like it! I also have the Christmas Tree atmosphere diffuser oil in the bathroom and enjoying that too….

Oooh this week’s CP will be easy; I love Duchafour. Is he really a renegade anymore though? I feel like he just helped redefine the new mainstream.

I’m wearing a hajusuuri amount of Rose Ikebana today (nine sprays), mostly because I found my sample in a tote bag I don’t use much, and half of it had tragically evaporated :( no doubt aided by plane flights. I smell really good; it’s showing a sweeter, more amber-y side of itself today.

Back at the CA office for the first time in a couple weeks, and it feels GREAT! Indoor toilets, my own cubicle (which now feels vast and so private), SILENCE around me. I did have fun in our Boise site, but this feels like home. (Work-home. Home-home has two warm little kitties in it.)

Yes! I don’t think the Project Renegades thing is that well known, and I have to say that while I did not try any of the 3, I don’t think of any of them as renegades at all and not sure they ever were.

Ooh, maybe! Perhaps that’s where the extra sweetness/amberyness comes from!

It’s been 3.5 h since I put it on and it still smells great, which is longer than my usual application of a Hermessence lasts, so that’s promising :)

Posting again to let you all know that in honor of Cake Day, I had half a piece of deeeeelicious lemon cake. I’m trying to be more conscious of when I am eating because I’m hungry and when I am eating because there is deeeeeelicious cake in front of me, which is why I’ve only had half of it, but watch out, world: if I feel even the slightest twinge of hunger in the next few hours, I will demolish the other half. Om nom nom.

Robin, that picture! I have it, I think in an old Creem magazine. It was a great surprise to see it today, thanks?. It’s a snow day here, and counting my blessings because it’s my day off. I’m snug at home wearing Casmir and hair dye. I had made a lame attempt at going grey. Not gonna happen! After lunch the kids and I will be decorating the Christmas tree. Fingers crossed for an early spring!???❄⛄?❤????

You have no idea how grim and exasperating six months of winter is. It snowed from mid November through the third week of April in Montreal last year. Winter would be fun if it actually only lasted three months.

I grew up in the East Coast and now live in the Bay Area. I miss snow not at ALL.

Even in the Bay Area, I can’t wait for spring. Most things are dead and dreary. It’s too cold for me to go swimming outdoors nowadays, and it’s always dark when I leave work. The only good thing about winter is the food (mostly the persimmons!).

    Hello guys!

    1) I am sure Robin has a wrap up of all the fragrance deals that can be had on this, Late Capitalism’s holiday of choice; however, I would like to point you towards Zullily for some really good deals on mass market/department scents. There is an offer of to pay over time with 3 payments if your credit card is protesting right now.

    2) SOTD: Karma by LUSH. Perfect for a foggy, rainy day!

    3) Easy dessert idea I discovered almost by accident: Mix prepackaged eggnog with rum- plenty of it. Then run through an ice cream maker. You get a delicious and frosty treat that really refreshes in over heated winter parties or after very heavy holiday meals.

Your eggnog slushy made me think of my mother-in-law last year….I had bought a Costco (Kirkland) fruit cake, which she usually really enjoys. But for some reason it wasn’t boozy enough for her liking. So she took a bottle of Myer’s dark rum and DOUSED that poor cake! Soaked it! It was downright flammable….and then I think she had 2 slices! HA HA HA :)

I’m wearing ELDO Rien, in an attempt (the 10th attempt) to like it, because it’s supposed to be good and incensy. And as much as i love incense, i can’t stand this one on me. And it lasts forever too .
Black Friday discovery : Pat McGrath make up lines at Sephora. By far the best colors and textures I’ve ever tried.

I think Rien is such an outspoken scent that you either really like it, or you don’t at all. I’m a massive fan, but I can totally understand that it’s a bit of a nuisance if you don’t as it lasts and lasts and lasts…

Have you tried Armani Bois d’Encens?

I think it’s the aldehydes or the animal note, there’s something “under” that incense that clogs the incense for me.
I have not tried the Armani, noting it down. Thank you for the tip.

Forgot all about the D’s for today. Wearing Bigarade concentrée by Jean-Claude Elléna which is one of those scents that sneak into your affections. It’s not spectacular but immensely likeable without being at all dull. Had a dental appointment after a bit of one of my teeth broke off during the weekend. All went well but I do feel a little numb.

You smell great Robin! I seem to remember that Schoen did all of the early OJ’s.

No, in fact it is very fleeting. It was good only for 2 wears. I have gone thru several samples and small decants of Ouarzazate, but I need to spray a decent amount to truly enjoy it. That is what I would love to get a full bottle later on.

It’s still drizzly and grey, the wettest November for 100 years and our basement room is saturated with sodden carpet. Stinky ! We will probably have to pull it up. But another record over at the Taiaroa Head albatross colony, 51 eggs, about 15 more than the previous high. The birds breed every second year, and eggs hatch in mid-January. The babies are huge, I think about 2kg. They dot their hillside and you can see them from across the harbour, they look like big mushrooms from a distance. L’artisan Al Ouhd for the CP.

In MH Fleur Oriental, the name bothers me as Fleur being feminine it should be orientale, as a French native speaker I find it appaling.

    SOTD = Chanel No.19 EDP

    …because I love it so.

My printer is on the fritz. It is out of warranty and while the support site was helpful, a “fix” that requires removing parts, heating water and dunking said parts in and doing all the above in 30 minutes scares the bejesus out of me. I may stop by Best Buy this week because I need a printer!

Commuting Woes No. 615 and 616:
    – guy with lots of bags and taking 2 seats. A woman asked to sit and he barely moved the bag and put it in between the 2 of them, invading her space and actually had the bag in HER lap (he had nothing on his lap). He ignored the request to move the bag so the woman got up.

    – walking up a steep incline on the way out of a station, the guy in front of me let out the longest loudest fart in commuting history. Thank God I was on an exhale and quickly walked past him to be upwind.

    Welcome to Monday.

Oh my gawd! Too, too funny! One time when I was working ICU, a fellow nurse asked for help turning and cleaning her intubated, sedated, sumo- wrestler look alike patient. All five of us were on his left side, pulling him over on that side while said nurse was on the right (butt) side to clean him as we held him over. Well, I guess because of his weight and the downward pressure, he couldn’t pass gas until we turned him. And then it was like the never ending explosive fart heard around the world. It almost blew my poor fellow nurse out the window! Unlucky for her, she had her face right in the thick of things and got it full blast in the face! We laughed so hard, I’m pretty sure we all wet our pants. Ain’t life grand?

Oh My Woman- that tops my Monday by far. ( I spent all day going back & forth to DMV in this horrid rain multiple times for a simple license renewal- new picture & updgrade the new ‘REAL ID’ license – supposedly mandatory in about a year anyway)
Deepest commiserations to you. I am still left speechless at the inconsideration of others – even after all these years. And Mondays, post holidays, need no additional assistance in being miserable!!
I wish you a lovely quiet perfect evening.

Are you sure you don’t want to order a printer today? Cyber Monday at Amazon has a lot of offers (with free delivery in the next 2-3 days). Best Buy online might have them too.

I’m going to check Consumer Reports first but ultimately, a printer purchase is one where I need to touch and feel the item before buying – maybe I need to apply the same principles to perfume purchases as well ?

I’m wearing Shalimar Mexique this morning. The garage is looking a bit tidier after I put together my new tool chest, although I seem to have put the wheel that only rolls from side to side in the wrong place. That’s okay, because I don’t plan on moving it much. All the leaves finally fell off my huge maple tree so it’s gutter cleaning time, and the hummingbirds are so hungry they have drunk half the feeder in a week’s time. It looks like winter is on the way.

Oregon has eight or nine hummingbird species but only one stays in winter, the Anna’s hummingbird. I have two pairs that use my feeder–they are territorial so sometimes there are little midair skirmishes if two approach the feeder at the same time.

I’m all in on the CP today wearing 10(!!!) sprays of Amaranthine. I’m taking full advantage of being off work and not having my boyfriend around to gas out because he did go back to work today. Leaving to pick up my mom and take her to one of my favorite restaurants for brunch. It’s the same restaurant where I had a lunch of fried chicken, collard greens, and mac and cheese a couple weeks ago. Then I might take her to my favorite Goodwill to shop. Oh, and the Chihuly Museum and Space Needle weren’t too crowded yesterday. The Chihuly Museum was wonderful, but the Space Needle gave me a little vertigo because it rotates and it’s slanted. At least I can say I’ve been up there now.

Today I wore Dark horse by Dame.
    Very busy at work.

I tried the new Serge Lutens last weekend, Le participe passé.
Not bad, not bad at all.
It smells like a big spice market. A bit linear though.

Husband’s first reaction was “Wow i want a bottle”. But later on he felt it might feel a bit too foody.
And I think I agree. There were some moments when I felt like “is someone preparing a curry”, so maybe not that appropriate for some work situations…? :)

I’m wearing a bit of Chanel Paris-Venise les eaux (or whatever) from a spritz while in Nordies. Meh. No splurge for me on perfume. Nothing too interesting. I need to be wowed to buy a bottle these days. Maybe I have become a grumpy, dissatisfied perfumista?

I did, however, splurge on a Pat McGrath Labs Lust Gloss (seriously? Why is everything about sex?) in Aphrodisiac, which is a nude pinky-peach. I usually like bolder colors, but this is just gorgeous, goes with warm or cool tone makeup, and is incredibly comfortable to wear. Feels more like a lip treatment. Me likey! ?

I was SO tempted by the outrageously expensive eye shadow palettes! If she sold single pan shadows, I would definitely pick some up. But I can NOT justify a palette when I rarely wear eye shadow at all. So pretty though…?

I understand very well, have debated the purchase with myself for months… until I got as a gift a smaller palette ( the 6 shades one) . it really has surprisingly versatile nuance. I rarely wear eyeshadow too but this one may just convince me, it has superb texture. The eye pencils are great too, highly recommending them even for minimalists!

SOTD is Zoologist Moth. Its honeyed warmth stood me in good stead on this snowy morning. I’m a bit crazy from trying to get Mom organized for coming to Texas soon for five months with me. Plus I’m going to Ann Arbor on Weds to give three talks and trying to polish all three and prepare handouts. It’ll be fun once it’s under way but I’m losing sleep over it all now.

All are on philosophy topics, and are public but are, I’m afraid, kind of narrow or specialised…. One is on portraits in the medium of what I call “stilled film” such as Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests. The other two are on Aristotle.

Rain here again for about the bajillionth time this year. And another flood advisory for the low areas. Playing plenty of Dio to make up for the yucky weather. ??☔

SOTD = Dior Poison Girl EdT, from the sample stash. I *might* be close to thunking this one! Since the sample is in an opaque sprayer, I am making my best guess on this. Plenty of things to choose from for the CP, but so far this had been a rather moody week, so emotion might dictate what I’m wearing, scent-wise.
