Happy Thanksgiving 2018 ~ open thread

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone who is celebrating today!

Whether you’re celebrating or not, feel free to talk about anything you like: what fragrance you’re wearing today, what perfume you're especially thankful for, what you’re going to cook or eat today...whatever you like, so long as it doesn’t conflict with our comment policy.

Happy Thanksgiving to all my American friends. Have a great day, full of fantastic food and the company of those whom you love.

Just another Thursday here in Nova Scotia. Wearing 22 EDT to face the 10 cm of snow which fell overnight

I have always felt that the Canadian Thanksgiving is on a much more sensible date. It is essentially a harvest festival, and for most of the U.S., the fall harvest is much earlier than late November.

Yes! Plus, it would be nice to have more space between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Americans take Thanksgiving as much more of a holiday than Canadians. We enjoy it, and eat too much, but it just doesn’t seem to have the emotional weight it does south of the border.
          YMMV

It really makes me sad, how retail has squashed thanksgiving down to less than a full day now!

Yes, and wasn’t even thinking of the shopping so much as spreading out the festivities — but the retail is another issue. Then again, if we moved Thanksgiving to October maybe the shopping season would just get longer.

Canuck Thanksgiving is much nicer, IMO — better weather (for travellers, hikes, hayrides, etc.), the best apples just ripe, much less commercialism and Christmas/seasonal creep, less lingering sense of betrayal of the Indigenous part of that first celebration. (Though we’ve been horrible to our own First Nations, make no mistake; we just emphasize that particular story less.) I once forever won the heart of my second grade teacher by picking it for a “My Favourite Holiday” project; I think she thought I was an unusually thankful/grateful child, but I just love October.

    Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Wearing Solstice Scents Estate Vetiver which is much less about vetiver and so much more about cocoa, patchouli and bourbon vanilla to my nose…it’s utterly addictive and I love it.

Keeping it real simple cooking wise…no entertaining and will be living in my bathrobe the entire day…have had a stressful work year so my mantra is to keep things as simple as possible at home.

We are joining you in “simple” since my husband and I are home sick. We are going to have grilled steak and mashed potato, and there may be no veg at all since we did not plan this in advance. If I pour a little pesto on the steak, that might count as veg?

We started The Darkest Hour last night (the Churchill movie) and will finish it tonight. I plan to be in bed by 9:30 🙂

The reports I have read are pretty scary. They are advising people who have romaine lettuce not just to throw the lettuce out, but to sanitize any surfaces it has touched, such as shelves and drawers in the fridge. Apparently, this is a particularly nasty strain of E. Coli that is putting a lot of people in the hospital.

My son ate all the frozen peas before he left town — it is really the only veg he finds tolerable. There is a sad little bag of mixed veg, and there is something about frozen mixed veg that I find more depressing than going without veg. 🙂

Was supposed to rain today in San Diego, so far nothing but two spits on the ground. I am busy contemplating all the tantalizing Black Friday coupon orders with sugarplums dancing in my head. Meanwhile, I am baking two batches of dinner rolls, made two pecan pies, and am wearing Anima Dulcis to blend in with all the delicious food smells. Happy Thanksgiving to all who are celebrating.

Happy Thanksgiving all! I’m thankful for home & family & good friends & the kindness of NST. Thankful for the rain yesterday which has washed the smoke out of the air… blue skies this morning for the first time in nearly two weeks!

We’re headed to friends’ for a Thankgiving feast. I baked a cake, one I’ve made before… and this time it fell apart while coming out of the pan. I thought about starting over, then decided: nah, this perfectly represents my year: not pretty, just aiming for functional, and not always hitting that mark either. I stuck the cake back together with frosting. It’ll taste the same no matter what it looks like 🙂

Robin, did you see that Chanel is selling a limited edition No 5 extrait in a Baccarat red bottle? 30.4 oz for a mere $30000. Hand delivered, of course. Should I meet them at the door in my sweats and a tshirt that’s covered in cat medicine? Bwahahahaha!

Taste is much more important than looks when it comes to food. It’s nice to have both, but I have encountered way too many cakes (usually from bakeries, not homemade) that looked beautiful but tasted like cardboard or worse. I have read descriptions of some of the things they do to food to make it look good for commercials or magazine articles. The gist of it is that most, if not all, of that food is rendered inedible.

(My sister once roasted a pan of potatoes and dropped the pan as she took it out of the oven. She and my husband just looked at each other and picked up the ones that fell and threw them back in the pan. It was a bonding moment they still joke about…helped by a few glasses of wine…)

I am testing out a couple of PPC scents with Ventiane on one arm and Heart of Darkness on the other. I am getting HoD for my hubby for Christmas. Both the name of the fragrance and the name of the perfume house are reminiscent of our summer vacation this year. We were in Providence this past summer on our vacation (and I visited the PPC shop), and one of the ships at Mystic Seaport is named Joseph Conrad, so it should serve as a reminder of our trip for him.

It is Just the two of us for Thanksgiving, so we will be celebrating with a nice dinner at a restaurant later on today. On Sunday, after church, we are going to an Elizabethan madrigal feast, which should be fun.

I like it. I haven’t yet given it a full wearing, only tested it on my arm. When I was in the shop I asked what type of sandalwood it had, and I forget what Charna said, but IIRC, it isn’t Australian (and it definitely isn’t Mysore). It is a little reminiscent of cedar to me. I think it would be a good scent for cooler weather. I probably won’t buy it just because I already have too many warm scents that I seldom wear because I live in such a hot climate. I wish I were better at describing perfumes, but if you like woody scents, give it a try. I find the PPC scents to generally have very good longevity for natural perfumes. Sedona Sweetgrass lasts a good 6 to 8 hours on me, whereas I have had some natural perfumes disappear in an hour or two.

Forgot to mention–PPC is having a Black Friday sale, buy two bottles of perfume (50 ml or 5 ml), and get a 5 ml size free. The code is BUY2GET1FREE. It can be used multiple times and expires on 11/28. Not valid on samples or sample sets. I definitely took advantage of this.

Happy Thanksgiving to those celebrating officially and best wishes to all of us for living lives filled with gratitude no matter our circumstances.

My Sylvaine Delacourte samples (vanilla) arrived! Can’t wait to try them.

Am contemplating more products of the Molten Brown muddled plum series since everything in the site is 25% off. I really like the scent. Am tempted by lotion or actual fragrance.

Heading to friends’ place later via quick bus ride. I do miss the days when I cooked and had guests…just can’t do it in our current space. But…I already have the turkey and fixings ready for cooking on Saturday…our new tradition for the two of us.

And I made chocolate wafer cookies from a Miette recipe. Oh my! They turned out beautifully. I love it when that happens.

Commando so far, and trying to decide what fragrance will go best with the roast duck we’re having for our Thanksgiving feast. Jour d’Hermes perhaps … it remains to be decided. Got my hair cut last evening, and stumbled across a reference to Love Your Melon (no affiliation) in a magazine while waiting for my appointment to begin. LYM sells knitted beanies and a variety of other items, donates beanies to kids dealing with cancer, and donates half their profits to organizations fighting pediatric cancer. Started my Christmas shopping early. 🙂

The best part of Thanksgiving Day for me is listening to Alice’s Restaurant. Warms my heart every year.
Heading out to the in-laws with an apple/pear pie and ice cream in hand, and smelling of BF Au Dela Narcisse from a sample. Nice and bright for a very cold, sunny day. My hubs said it smells perfumey. Well, it’s perfume!!
While the ritual of Thanksgiving may not stir me, I like to use these occasions to set intentions. This year it’s committing my self to greater kindness and understanding of myself and others and greater awareness of the suffering of self and others, from small to larger scale.
And much gratitude for this community of people who are kind and scenting the world beautifully!

Happiest of days to anyone celebrating, in any way you celebrate!

For the past two Thankgivings, we did not have gas in our place. So we didn’t cook anything. This year, we are cooking–quite literally–with gas! I am so thankful for the ability to do so, as well as for having enough to have food, and for the good people accompanying us for the day.

I am also thankful for you, NST community. I don’t comment every day, but I do read most days, and this place always brings a smile. I love having perfume friends inside the computer!

Pleasantly full but not stuffed for the first Thanksgiving that Mr. Jalapeno and I are celebrating this week. The smoked boneless leg of lamb came out so succulent and tender that you can almost cut it with a butter knife. This was the low key day. Saturday will be “Friendsgiving”… much more food and a lot more people. Lucky us, we aren’t the ones hosting that. We will be bringing smoked turkeys, already carved. ????

Cold, cold and cold here today! The wind chill was in the “stupid cold!” range today… low teens. Hope that everyone is home warm and safe right now.

SOTD = EL Cinnabar, from my bottle. I needed a winter warmer of a scent today, and this sure fits the bill! Plus it smells pretty darn good with all the food smells that were wafting thru the kitchen to day,

Happy Thanksgiving to all – getting close to midnight, and I’m pleasantly full after hosting 15 people, including 3 adorable toddlers, who were even more adorable because I didn’t have to run after them (my kids now enjoy doing that and they had a blast and even the parents got to sit for a good part of the meal). Sorry to all those who couldn’t celebrate due to illnesses and other life stuff, and I wish you better times in the extremely near future! I wore OJ woman today, and very tempted by the Black Friday offer as my sample is nearly drained. But only the 120 ml and the solid perfume are on sale, and neither is calling me.

Hi all, I am a day late as I was a bit too tired yesterday, though I did manage to read through all the posts. We (my brother, mother, and I) took a two-hour drive over to Ann Arbor to have dinner out at a restaurant with my cousin, aunt, and uncle there. It was a good meal, and we enjoyed seeing one another. Kind of too bad to eat out, but it saves everyone the stress and mess of cooking. The restaurant is in a huge complex with many banquet rooms and was insanely crowded; our waiter said they expected to serve 3,000 people for the holiday! Still, we had good service, and got our own turkey at our table with the different side dishes, a big salad bar, and pumpkin pie with whipped cream. I couldn’t help being a bit haunted by those not there with us: my father, grandmother, cousin who died too young, brother’s estranged wife… Sometimes holidays are very tough. And the weather was so dark and dreary! I’m happy to say there is sunshine today. My SOTD for yesterday was Ciel de Gum. Its cinnamon spice made it seem appropriate.
