Wednesday scent of the day 11/21

Posted by Robin on 21 November 2018 243 Comments

Hump Day, plus World Television Day and René Magritte's birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm keeping cozy in Dries Van Noten par Frédéric Malle.

Reminder: on 11/23, pick your Black Friday poison: wear the last fragrance you bought, wear a cheap thrill, or wear a fragrance you love but refuse to buy in a full size because it's too expensive.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: you can find the Magritte plates at MoMA, $8 each.

I am in John Galliano EdP. I bought a back-up decant a month ago, so while it is not the last fragrance I bought, it is still a fairly recent purchase.

Howdy Hi everyone! Day off today, woo hoo! Lot’s of errands today, even going to try and get a mammogram done, since I totally forgot last month. Sotd is original Alien, from a sample. I’m trying to convince myself to get the rainbow bottle, since Mugler is having 25 percent off site wide, no affiliation. Idk… I might just go back to tj maxx and get the lotion I saw there yesterday. The sun is out, temporarily. We’ve only had 9 percent sunshine this month. Going to have to soak it up. Have a great day, ?☉✌

      9% sunshine, that’s depressing!

      Good luck with the mammogram.

We’ve had about the same..9 percent sunshine…it’s been lots of rain and then way too early snow…yuck!! (and yes, I am upstate to answer your question from yesterday or rather early this morning-LOL!)

Miel de Bois today, on a cloud of sticky honey. I see why people have a hard time with it but I absolutely adore it, start to finish. I was looking for something holiday-y but not spicy.

I have carrot soufflé, snickerdoodle bread and pickled cukes to make today (fun!) and house cleaning (unfun!), so I’d best get after it. Chaaaaarrrge!!

I really missed NST yesterday! So glad it is back!

Thank you all for your beautiful birthday wishes on Monday. They meant a lot to me! My youngest sister and her husband showed up in the evening and surprised me with a cake, wine and food. We shared a couple of hours together and it was very uplifting!

I am wearing Lalique Noir Premier Elegance Animale (thanks a lot Flopper! ). Rose, Saffron, leather, peach. Perfect for the holidays! I am becoming obsessed with it. It is beautiful, warm, cozy and brings a smile to my face every time I wear it.

Ready to face brutal temperatures for the next 3 days, but I am thankful to have a warm and cozy home to relax and feel good!

Stay warm and safe everyone, especially if you are traveling.

I forgot to mention about my dog! He will have an echo this afternoon and blood work on Monday. If everything comes out fine he will have surgery next Tuesday. I am so stressed and scared because he is 14 years old and the risk is higher. I am hoping and praying that his surgery is successful!

Happy Wednesday that feels like a Friday! I’m at work while my husband is at home making pies! I’m testing Honoré de Prés Sexy Angelic, which… well, it’s very much a skin scent. If I sprayed myself generously all over from head to toe, I do think I’d have a very pleasant (and, sure, sexy) almond musk aura, but with half a sample vial I can barely smell it. Still, kind of great for what it is – if I were looking for a nonobtrusive signature scent this would be on the short list.

Happy hump day, all. Too early for perfume (pre-coffee), but I’m thinking I need to go with something bright and cheerful today. Perhaps Ann Gerard’s Ciel d’Opale, which is light and easy, yet not boring.

Planning a very low-key Thanksgiving, just me and a girlfriend sitting around eating Korean slow roasted pork shoulder (bo ssam) and watching a movie.

Yep, pork will be slow roasting at my house. I use the recipe from the now defunct The Bitten Word:

        https://www.thebittenword.com/thebittenword/2013/04/bo-ssam-with-ssam-sauce-and-garlic-scallion-sauce.html

This was adapted from the NYT/Momofuku recipe, but is, in my opinion, better, because of the crucial step of removing the excess salt/sugar rub from the pork before putting it in the oven. In fact, I just rinse everything off the pork prior to roasting. I also use a torch to caramelize the brown sugar crust as a last step, rather than a really hot oven (my smoke alarm goes off incessantly when I cook anything over 400 degrees).

Sounds perfect and wish I were having that kind of holiday. The pork sounds delish! I’ll have to pass in that recipe to my live-in cook husband!
And I do think that Momofuku isn’t above being improved upon ? I went there once because of all the hype, waited for a table for over an hour, and frankly was somewhat underwhelmed in the end.

Underwhelmed is not good, especially after a lot of hype.

A friend of mine made the NYT/Momofuku recipe, and it was almost inedible because of the huge quantities of salt in the rub left on the outside. Rinsing it off is, IMHO, crucial.

Hi all! I’m happily wafting BK Amber Oud from the bottle split I did last spring – it’s like a warm, silky wrap on this cool rainy day in the PNW.

Like Lillyjo, this is a day off and I am VERY excited about it. And like NancyLeandros, I’ll be doing food prep and cleaning to host 8 tomorrow. Just walked the pupkin, now yoga and then I’ll get to it!.

Have had a challenging couple of days the past few days. Mostly involving conflict with my son’s independent school. I hate conflict and having to stand your ground against bureaucrats who cannot think outside of their box/ move outside of their entrenched thinking. How do young minds cope with such inflexibility? I girded my loins by wearing all three leathers in my arsenal to the three meetings (yes three, and there is no resolution yet). Hoping that everybody having a challenging 2018 (pixel, rabbitsflower, calypso) may get a reprieve over December and that 2019 may be unexpectedly wonderful.

Thank you, Springpansy. I should perhaps clarify that my son wasn’t rude or behaving badly. He is just an “indigo” child in a world that sees black and white and, because he is quiet and does not demand attention, the teacher has allowed him to get very much behind on his academic goals. The school’s opinion is that “catch up” is impossible, while ours is that something can always be done about a situation, no matter how dire it seems. We will see if we can move past this stalemate/impasse.

I have an indigo son as well–maybe not in the true sense of the word, but he’s wonderful and different and doesn’t go from A to C by way of B. I believe we need to make room at the table for all kinds of people and that way we all benefit. And I agree that something can always be done. Isn’t that what we want to teach our children?

So sorry you have to go through this, but your son is lucky to have parents sticking up for him. I hate all forms of bureaucracy, but it’s especially hard when you’re fighting for your children.

Ugh, I dislike conflict too, especially when a beloved child’s needs are at stake. Love the image of you fortifying yourself with not one but three leather fragrances! If your son is an introvert (as I am), you might get a lot out of the book “Quiet”, by Susan Cain. She also has a great TED talk online, about introverts. Very inspiring and reassuring. Good luck!

Wearing good old Mitsouko extrait de parfum, just because. I got all of my Guerlain extraits on eBay years ago. Not dirt cheap, but not costing an arm and a leg either.
Glad to see NST up and running again, it felt kind of odd without it, yesterday.

This sounds awfully decadent but I’ve only ever tried Jicky, Mitsouko, L’heure bleue, Shalimar, Chamade and Nahéma in extrait. I think I’ve read in a couple of places that they smell quite different according to the concentration. And, not everyone likes Mitsouko or other big Guerlains for that matter.

SOTD: Pacifica Breath Taking perfume oil.

This CP is perfect for me – I am a cheapskate from a long line of cheapskates! My perfume collection is almost entirely cheap thrills and decants of perfumes that are too expensive for a full bottle.

Where there’s a will, there’s a way! I got into perfume while I was a broke grad student, and I started out by requesting aaaallll the free samples (Diptyque, Hermes, Sephora, Mugler, Dame, etc.) and did lots of sample swaps with folks I met both here and in other online communities. Perfume people are truly the best, most generous people.

Now I have a big-girl job and am a cheapskate by choice rather than necessity, so I try to pay it forward whenever I can!

Tomorrow’s predicted temperature range is 12-22F. yikes! Plus, while we were adding a new gas fireplace, we found out that our 1925 house has no insulation. :::sigh::: At least we have a fireplace to keep us warm now, lol!

Only working half a day today thank goodness. Made homemade cranberry sauce and New Mexico red chile sauce last night. Apparently New Mexicans use red chile like gravy on Thanksgiving, so I figured when in Rome and all haha. Will go home today and make the desserts and prep the sweet potato casserole. I’m so envious of your cooking schedule. We’re having Thanksgiving with my husband’s family and while I love them, their planning style is… not like mine. I tried to ask who would be making what and they were like, “We’ll all cook together! It will be fun!”. It was pulling teeth to even get them to talk in advance about buying groceries. So, my plan is to switch off every controlling bone in my body (there are… quite a few) and just do what I’m told and enjoy the result, whatever it is. There will, at least, be pie and wine.

So yeah, the “let’s all cook together” thing would make me crazy! I have complete faith though that you will be able to go with the flow- as you said, focus on pie and wine!

I like reading about all your Thanksgiving plans. We have had lots of rain and flooding , I think we got a month’s worth of rain in a single day and everything feels damp. The poor birds and rabbits look miserable, and I think a lot of newly hatched birds either die of cold or drown in the sodden nests The adults tip the dead young out and I have seen quite a few on the paths. Poor things. Well, early morning looking across the mist covered valley from my bed on the couch ( which is comfier than my bed, actually). I gave in to temptation yesterday and ordered two smell bent perfumes, one blind (40% off.Code: wonderful) the other Smoked Ambergris ( which I am wearing from a sample) .

SOTD is Satori which is wafting quietly but beautifully today. I just love this stuff. Probably my favorite incense/woods/spice at the moment.
And on the Japanese scent aesthetic theme: Recommendation du jour-Nippon Kodo incense Kyuragi Sandalwood. Beautiful but not overpowering, low smoke(no wood stick).
Holiday plans: in-laws on Long Island. We’ve been instructed to bring ice cream. Pretty easy? But I’m gonna make an apple-pear pie also.

    Also, on the cat front:
we vetted and adopted out one of our older, friendlier outdoor colony cats this past weekend and while the adopters are nice folks, they are super unresponsive to requests for updates from me. We’ve started an email thread for them to post updates to our 10 caregiver volunteers and I’ve sent texts and I’m just not getting any responses which is making me and others kind of anxious. Any advice from anyone with experience in cat adoptions please advise!!! I don’t want to be pushy and I know people are busy, holidays etc, but also feel like we should be getting updates on her adaptation when requested.

I don’t think you should worry – some people are naturally less communicative than others. Unless you stipulated up front that they would have to give you updates, as a cat adopter I would never assume I had a duty to do this.

We should’ve been more explicit and systematic. Some of our other more active local TNR/rescue people have a more rigorous protocol which does also include agreeing to home visits to check the cats well being(and offer support and tips) in the beginning, especially with cats that have never been socialized or indoors. Hindsight is always 20/20…

No advice. But I agree. It’s one thing when it’s a regular adoption. But from an outdoor colony, updates make sense.

By the way, who knew Freddie Mercury was such a cat lover? So sweet.

I need to see Bohemian Rhapsody!
I also had a not great cat sitting experience this past summer where the sitter was not a communicative type and only reported our male cat as being a little shy when we probed for updates. Found out after that he had been under the bed all week and she wasn’t sure if he had been eating. He was thinner and also developed an itchy stress rash for which we had to give him steroids. So, I think that experience makes me not assume they’d let us know if it wasn’t fine.

No. I checked in with them at night of the day we dropped her off and she just said “still shy”. I have texted her subsequently with viral lab results and for an update but no reply at all.
I think I was spoiled by 2 recent kittens we adopted out. Both adopters post photos and updates regularly on their FB pages- which was how they preferred to keep everyone in the loop. I guess I assumed this would be similar. I’m also worried because the cat is older and has a couple of health issues which weren’t urgent, but might get worse under stress.

Thank you! And I should try Fils d D in the cold. I always think of it as summer, but it’s a little too sweet for me in the summer.
I’d want to go see her eventually, more because I’ll miss seeing her. But right now I’d settle for “she’s eating, using litter box, but still hiding under the bed” in writing.

I tried Une Rose once, but it was probably the only FM that I washed off. (Shamefaced admission). It felt claustrophobic on me, as though it was strangling me. Strange…

I am wearing Caron Aimez Moi, which is a gift from a lovely friend. We were shopping at a Caron Boutique in Paris two years ago. I bought a bottle of Caron Piu Bellodgia and she bought Aimez Moi. Recently, she told me she can’t wear it because it gives her a headache, and did I want it. Heck yea I wanted it :)

I’m in Camel again, which counts toward the CP because I can’t get a FB because it’s too expensive, in that it costs something at all and I can’t buy anything at all. My coworker commented on how nice I smell! This doesn’t happen to me often :) Today, I actually got accidentally heavy-handed and let a quarter of my sample run down my neck by accident. I should do that every day.

My flight from Boise to SF is delayed for an undefined amount of time, but I was able to hop on an earlier flight that was delayed by three hours, so I’ll end up just being half an hour late!

I’m all rosy today wearing double Le Labo roses: Baie Rose 26 sprayed and Rose 31 hand and body lotion. The latter is still from my courtesy small bottles at the Fairmont Royal York in Toronto. I do like the Baie Rose, which is more spicy, but that lotion lingers in a most pleasant way. Has anyone else noticed how bad the sprayers are on the LL sample bottles? I’m having problems with all of them, and they’re not cheap.

Cozy in Oielettes Rouge – I can never remember how to spell that correctly, but lo, these many hours after I put it on I still smell like rich carnations with a few other random blossoms in there to cut the goodness. :-)

I need to find my mandoline, and slice up a bunch of sweet potatoes tonight, so that I can make a sweet potato/Manchego cheese/2 cups of cream/3 eggs/a pinch of nutmeg savory casserole to take to MIL’s tomorrow. Also some zuchini bannana nut bread I made with gluten free flours which turned out really good. 25% quinoa flour in any sort of dough makes everything better, in my experience…

Enjoy the holiday, everyone who celebrates this.

I have to say I maintain an awareness of friends on the Shoshone/Arapahoe reservation in Wyoming who have gotten radical recently, who refer to this holiday as Occupation Day. Part of being thankful for what we have, is acknowledging those who are having a different experience….sorry for the politics.

Back at the hospital after working a half day and getting groceries for tomorrow. Boyfriend is getting a procedure done on his abscess right now (finally). It’s not the procedure they initially thought they’d do, and we didn’t necessarily expect for him to still be here this time. This visit has been a fustercluck. His radiology orders somehow got cancelled when all that should have been cancelled was the drainage procedure. He still should have been on their schedule for a needle extraction. Luckily his inflammation has gone way down based on all the IV antibiotics he’s had. I feel so bad for him and even more so because my mom and grandma are flying in tonight and visiting until next Wed morning. Luckily they’re staying with my aunt and uncle and not us.

Anyway, wearing Strange Invisible Perfumes L’Invisible from the first pricy niche bottle I bought for myself back in 2010 or so. I’ve mentioned before but this was back when $135 was expensive for niche perfume. I can’t afford their prices anymore. It’s comforting to me.
