Thursday scent of the day 11/15

Posted by Robin on 15 November 2018 280 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday! It's also Use Less Stuff Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

Me: salt and pepper, with Calvin Klein Reveal.

Reminder: on 11/16, wear a savory perfume (something spicy, herbal, salty, or otherwise foody but not sweet). Suggested by Jalapeno.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is from the Calvin Klein Fall 2018 global campaign.

    Good morning Y’all….

Smelling pretty yummy in Ganache Lemon Eclair! I’ve finally found a lemon that doesn’t smell like furniture polish on my skin…it’s a true, crisp sour lemon that is perfect with the bakery notes. Longevity is zilch, but other than that I love it!

Sounds very yummy but what a disappointment on the lasting power.

I’ve looked at the Ganache site in the past but was always more interested in their coffee offerings. Have you tried any of those?

This house is completely new to me! I bought a sampler, and saw that the Lemon Eclair was on clearance for $20, so I bought it (based on Delicious Delights’ YouTube review)….so glad I took the chance!

The sampler came in an adorable plastic macaroon cookie container, with a $25 off my next FB purchase, so I’m definitely gonna get Southern Tea Kakes soon! :) Smells EXACTLY like my Mama’s tea cakes…..

I’m smelling of abstract flowers and fruit in Divine’s Eternel féminin, the extrait version of their first perfume. Divine has come out with little 5 ml rollerball bottles of their fragrances which you can buy in sets of either 3 or 6 perfumes. They look very pretty!

You search for the perfume in Fragrantica. Once you’re on the perfume’s page, look for a Fragrancenet ad featuring the perfume you want to purchase and click it. You’ll be redirected to Fragrancenet and you’ll usually see a discount code that is usually higher than what you would normally see were you to go directly to Fragrancenet. “Normal” ranges from usually 20ish % (boo hiss) to 30%. By going through Fragrantica, tou will likely get 35% off or even 37% off!

I recently blind bought Reveal in TJMaxx (the line to the register has got to be the most intense impulse buying experience, ever) and it was a bomb, sadly. I had tried it in Saks when it first arrived and thought I liked it. Oh, well. Win some, lose some.

    SOTD: Ambre Nuit

That Calvin Klein hat is cute! Not sure I’d wear it but would like to try it. :)

Good morning from Boise, ID, friends! I slept abysmally for absolutely no reason, and am emotionally unprepared for a day of meetings with semi-strangers.

Wearing Vetiver Tonka because I forgot to bring any perfumes on purpose and this is what I had in my purse. Thankfully, I love it.

I have been trying to be on a no-buy pretty much since falling down the perfumista rabbit hole, and I’ve also been trying to lose weight for the past 1.5 years (since I gained a figurative ton while writing my PhD thesis). I’ve decided to couple these miseries into one: a no-buy until I hit a weight goal. Ughhhh. Hopefully this will motivate me better. I want some Camel!

Was craving something bright and fresher on this cold, gloomy grey day (might snow a little later ????) so am test driving 7 Virtues Orange Blossom from a Sephora sample. So far it’s fitting the bright and fresh criteria. Smells more like oranges with a hint of vanilla than the smell of blossoms, but I like it.

Robin, what do you think of Reveal? I see it pop up at the discounters from time to time and am tempted to blind buy.

I’m going dry-spicy today in Berdoues Oud Al Sahraa. I got this sample over the summer (Thanks Jalapeno!) and have been saving it for cooler weather. I’m surprised at how much I like it. Oud doesn’t really do it for me, but I think I’m getting more of the citrus and myrrh than the oud. Might get a decant once my sample is gone.

Oh, and a recommendation request – I’m having a big craving for orange blossom lately that nothing in my collection really satisfies. I’m looking for a realistic orange blossom scent that’s not too sweet but not too indolic. For reference: I like Dilettante, but find it a bit too heavy on the indoles – it gets kind of musty on my skin. Any ideas?

I did try Séville – and really wanted to like it – but it turns into EXTREME SOAP on my skin with super-huge projection. Normally I don’t mind a little soapiness, but Séville is just too much of a good thing for me!

Have you tried the Le Labo Fleur de Oranger? It gets a bad rap for being boring+expensive, but that one really smells like my recollection of wafting OB in L.A.
I also like JM Basil and Neroli since it’s greener.

I haven’t tried the Le Labo – thanks for suggesting! I have been lemming the JM Basil & Neroli body cream since I tried it on at an airport at least a year ago. It’s really lovely.

Have you tried any of the neroli perfumes from Au Pays de la Fleur d’Oranger? They’re really orange blossom perfumes even though they have neroli in the name. Also, Ava Luxe Fleur d’Oranger and Neroli Blossom are both very good. Another that I haven’t spent much time with but may fit the bill is L’Artisan Histoire d’Oranger. Maybe Houbigant Oranger en Fleurs.

Great suggestions, thanks! I tried some nerolis from Au Pays de la Fleur d’Oranger awhile ago, but I don’t remember being blown away by them. Maybe it’s time for another try! Histoire d’Oranger is another that’s been on my list to try.

I second Rabbitsflower, in Neroli Blanc the OB has an almost medicinal aspect which I find addictive, I find the intense which is more popular on Fragrantica too sweet.
Another option might be Fragonard Fleur d’Oranger, so lovely, so affordable and a sleeper hit, it’s been a favorite for a long time, there is now an intense but for me the regular one is just perfect.

Well, darned good for a modern CK, but not on my buy list.

If you didn’t already have a decent arsenal of no brainers, it would be worth a shot. But it’s not exciting enough to chase after otherwise.

And, agree with Jessica’s comparisons (in her review). It is not like Merveilles, but it’s in the same class, and Merveilles is just better / less boring.

If I’m being honest with myself, the no-brainers in my collection are the ones I wear the most. So to me, that makes Reveal all the more appealing :)

Wearing my beloved POAL for a day that promises to bring snow, sleet and rain in the afternoon. POAL always puts a smile on my face and makes me feel beautiful and happy. These days the new perfume releases do not have that effect on me anymore. I hope some day I can find again something outstanding and breathtaking.

My husband got me a Le Labo sample set for my bday back in October, and it came with a gift card for a 50ml bottle. I’ve narrowed my choices down to Ylang 49, Patchouli 24, and Labdanum 18. Today I have Labdanum on one arm and Ambre Sultan on the other. Labdanum is cleaner and lighter, with less of a balsamic quality, but they actually are similar. And maybe a bit savory?

Hope everyone is staying safe in the snow AND the fires. AZ has been lucky to have a quiet fall.

Wearing Black Pepper today. It has gotten a lot of play this month, since getting my decant. I put it on after using Molton Brown’s Black Pepper body wash, and it is guaranteed to wake me up in the morning. Bonus (for me at least) is that the burst of true black pepper scent quiets down by the time I get to work.

Song’s been stuck in my head all morning, so with a hat tip to Bear I present you with one of the 80s greats:

    The impression that you sell
Passes in and out like a scent
But the long face that you see comes from living close to your fears
If this is up then I’m up but you’re running out of sight
You’ve seen your name on the walls
And when one little bump leads to shock miss a beat
You run for cover and there’s heat, why don’t they

In the shamelessly simple and comforting warmth of Stash this AM. The air in Oakland is still pretty dreadful and I cannot stop myself from feeling others’ suffering and loss settled in the ashy air I am breathing.

Extra credit if you can name the band as well as the song without looking it up.

Do what they say, say what they mean
        One thing leads to another
You told me something wrong, I know I listen too long but then
One thing leads to another, yeah, yeah . . .

I was on my hands and knees ( literally) smelling the most wonderful patch of lily of the valley in the Botanic gardens yesterday when a line of tourists from a cruise ship suddenly appeared and filed past in an orderly manner. It was quite funny, me on the ground like a dog looking up, repeating ‘hi’, ‘hello’ etc. and them staring and puzzled. No one joined in. Amazing smell, and so much better from ground kevel! Paprika Brasil for the CP but I have yesterday’s remains of new Interdit on my skin. It’s a little sweet but very smooth, an easy perfume with no hard edges and I liked it after about an hour. Also tried the Calvin Klein Big Plastic Eye (Big Sister ) perfume which was light and fresh.

The Brooklyn Botanic Garden has a smell garden that is wonderful, if anyone ever has occasion to visit – with a rope guide and Braille signs, too.

Ha! That’s great, but it is an amazing smell. I was doing the similar LOTV sniffing last Spring with a few LOTV perfumes on my arm for real time comparison. But in the privacy of my yard, so no strange looks (and CdG Lily was the winner).

We happily have our lily of the valley planted around a tree with a retaining wall right in front of it…so where you stand to smell them, they’re at about thigh height and all you have to do is bend over. It is the best way to keep lily of the valley :-)

Bal d’Afrique sample today. I find this one interesting and unusual. But do I love it? Not yet. (I’ll join the CP tomorrow.)

Ear worm: Ozzy Osbourne Crazy Train. Because this morning Mr. SP was bugging me to leave early for work if I wanted a ride (and I did) by shouting “All aboard…” so I played Crazy Train on my phone for him, quite loudly I might add.

Had a bad sleep last night and I am thinking about getting some coffee to help fight headache. Yesterday my DH broght home two huge chocolate bars from Aldy’s- so YUMMY! The bar has 2 layers: the bottom layer is coffee flavored milk chocolate and the top layer is white chocolate. Well, one bar is gone ( but I was good and shared a little with DH and kids :)
Commando for now, but hopefully when the headache is gone I’ll spritz something light like Chanel 19 or EA Green Tea.

It was by a brand local to me, Eclat, and they are good but the prices are pretty high. I am sort of sorry I tasted this one!

Dolfin also makes boxes with little separately wrapped squares of chocolate, all mixed flavors, and one of them is cardamom — those are fantastic.

Rococo makes a cardamom bar, but I have a hard time finding that brand.

Rococo is UK. I used to buy them in a great chocolate store in Pittsburgh but I don’t get to Pittsburgh these days.

Dolfin I think is Belgian? I have bought them online at Chocosphere.

Geisha Noire for me today, but I think I’ll swotch to Nirvana Black later. My toes are cold today….I need warmth.

The concert/show last night was great. Boz Scaggs was in fine voice (surprisingly strong), had talented musicians with him, and his new blues songs are great. I really enjoyed those songs and musicians cutting loose, but the crowd was happy to hear the oldies. I know those were the ones that built his fan base, but I prefer the roots stuff. Brought back fond memories of going to Slim’s in SF. So many good shows there.

Just wanted to pop in and thank you all for your compassion yesterday. I am still really struggling. I can’t explain the bond I had with her- different than any dog or cat I’ve had (not lessening those bonds, just different). I feel like I’ve lost my little best friend. It’s hard for me to even look at pictures of her.

Also I want to say that my heart is with everyone struggling. Those who’ve lost loved ones, who are under stress, the fires in California. I’m thinking of you all. Hugs.

I wore Lubin’s Black Jade this morning courtesy of a nice NSTer – I really like it, a rosey chypre. I think I like Lubin scents in general from what I have sniffed so far (including Kismet and Idole). But they disappear fast on me.

I wonder if the perfumes of brands that use a higher percentage of naturals vs. synthetics (I am not sure if Lubin does, but I have this “problem” with NVC) are marked by a lack of longevity? It is not necessarily a bad thing, just wondering though.

Hello NST! I’m glad to be back to wearing perfume and reading about what is going on in everyone else’s lives. I was out in Colorado recently. I wish that I could say it was for fun, but it wasn’t.

Over the past few months, a lot of phone calls and texts have been going back and forth between me and my brother. It seems that my mom’s condition has deteriorated in the last 6 months to the point that my brother more or less told me that I had better come out ASAP. So I did. I was able to take care of a few things this trip, but will have to go out again to deal with more stuff. My mom is both better off and worse off than I expected… more on this later.

SOTD = TF Orchid Soleil EdP, from the sample stash. I am happily back to enjoying my samples and bottles. I thought about a couple of CP related scents, but Orchid Soleil smells fantastic on a snowy, wintry day.

Orchid Soleil is a tropical BWF similar to Guerlain Terracotta, but it has a BIG BIG BIG menthol note in the top notes. Then lots of flowers and vanilla in the drydown.

A couple of hours ago I left my house to go to work only to find about 2-ish inches of snow on the ground, with no signs of stopping. I made it down my hill, tires slipping a little (no 4-wheel drive), noticed a big SUV on the road in front of me sliding around, and promptly turned around and went back home. If big 4-wheel drive SUVs are sliding……

Called work to say I wasn’t taking any chances on driving and they were very understanding. And I had on my last little bit of Evening Edged in Gold sample, now the only one to enjoy it is my cat. Bummer.

My condolences to those upthread who are going thru rough times and family losses. Please don’t forget to take care of yourselves.

Seconding what lillyjo said, plus adding in a warm & comforting beverage of your choice. ????

I’m wearing a couple sprays of Chergui tonight; it’s a really nice calming blanket right now.

Hoping for my typical flex day off tomorrow, but I may have to go in depending on if a specific email comes through tonight. Have to go check in about an hour. I’m trying to get ready for our trip next Tuesday so I can suck it up for 1 day at work if necessary; it will mean huge peace of mind. Plus I can bank the time.

    Happy almost Friday everyone!
