Wednesday scent of the day 11/14

Posted by Robin on 14 November 2018 203 Comments

Hump Day and World Diabetes Day, and Claude Monet's birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm accruing community project points in Comptoir Sud Pacifique L'Eau du Gouverneur.

Reminder: on 11/16, wear a savory perfume (something spicy, herbal, salty, or otherwise foody but not sweet). Suggested by Jalapeno.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I love that image. I visited Giverny a few years ago, it’s a gorgeous place but incredibly crowded. I didn’t even visit Monet’s house.

Not gaining any points in Noir Epices.

Glad you have a good perfume today! I always get stuck with perfumes I don’t like after testing them, it’s a surprisingly uncomfortable experience. I like the oicture too. I have two irises in flower in my garden at the moment , they have somehow managed to survive through a tangle of weeds and struggled up…so now I think I will refer to them as my Giverny garden. I was lucky to go there when there were no crowds and could take my time as I had rooms to myself. I have missed major museums though due to my impatience with queues.

I´m not great at queues myself but if I feel that something might be worth it I can manage to wait. I just wish that Giverny had been a trifle quieter. It was in June when most gardens are at their best.
There is another really wonderful garden in Normandy called Le Jardin plume. Stunning and not so full of tourists taking selfies.

I went to Monet’s gardens at Giverny too, got lucky and there were no crowds. I have a photo of myself standing alone on the arched bridge. It was gorgeous.

That bridge is pretty. I could barely see the flowers for all the crowd.

The one time I made a visit, I was not aware that it was a French national holiday. Talk about crowds! ???? It was lovely, though, and I’m glad I went. I especially loved the house’s blue kitchen. That’s a color I’ve never used for a kitchen, but there, it was charming.

Hey austenfan, why do you not give yourself points for Noir d’Epices? On me, it’s spice’o’rama!

Clever you, but it is a spice fest but it reads more as mulled wine to me.

Wearing Reglisse Noire by 1000 Flowers.
Today, it is wearing a bit sweet on me, but that licorice note is lovely.

I am wearing the hopelessly beautiful Une Rose for its savory truffle note, which gives it a kind of elegant armpittiness that I wish more fragrances would lean into.

I’m in Rose Flash, my HG rose. I wonder what would happen if I layered this with Mohur which is all too light and fleeting on me. Would it overpower it? Or would they together create something new?

      I’m bad at abbreviations–what’s HG?

It’s interesting that Mohur is light and fleeting on you! It’s quite prominent on me. But I think Rose Flash would obliterate it and also clash with it, at least on my skin.

I like Penhaligon’s Malabah. Not very strong, but it smells like straight-up lemon tea. No sweetness. It’s really nice!

Berdoues Assam of India and Thymes Tupelo Lemongrass also have a lemon tea vibe.

Day off today for a day-long visit to Philly. I missed my ride there and decided to go there via Amtrak. I eon’t bore you with the commuting woes…all I’ll say is that I am surprised there isn’t more rail rage. I just went with the flow.

    SOTD = Guerlain Cuir Beluga

Right now, I’m in the middle of a guided tour of the Fabulous Fashion exhibit at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. In my entire life, I have never considered myself a Fashion aficionado. As beautiful as they are, I am always about function over form. Instead of ooh ash, I wondered how the wearer could walk or go to the bathroom or scratch an itch. Nevertheless, I applaud the genius of the designers, their use of materials and their eye for colors!

No fragrance today, but can report back on a couple of By Killians sampled over the past few days. Woman in Gold: LOTS of vanilla – of the cupcake frosting variety. Gold Knight: unisex to my nose and I could smell the star anise. This could be a contender for Friday’s CP. Black Phantom: for me the nicest of the bunch. And surprise: despite the listed notes of rum, coffee and caramel, this smells like a vanilla bean to me. And my eldest son immediately said: Something smells like vanilla. Have a good day!

It has been a difficult couple weeks. My dad passed away late last night at 82 from congestive heart failure. He had a heart attack/triple bypass surgery when he was 54 and lived 28 years which is pretty incredible…he outlived at least one of his cardiologists and his current one liked to jokingly tell him…”you really shouldn’t be alive…” ;) I am grateful he had no pain.

Life is so short and precious. My heart goes out to all those affected by the CA fires who are missing their family and friends too. Please hug those around you and tell them they are loved.

Hi Robin (and anyone else interested)!
I went to my Yves Rocher today to smell these 2 limited edition shower gels. Red Apple smells like a sweet, more juicy apple with hints of maple syrup. They didn’t have Golden Tea on display but I asked about it and they’ll start to sell that one tomorrow. SA let me smell it and I liked it much more! It was a nice tangy tea scent.

SotD is Atelier Cologne Emeraude Agar.

I’ve been told that they wanted to ‘dose the pleasures’ so first they put up Red Apple on the shelves and now Golden Tea will join. I’m going to buy that one today.

I’m wearing No.5 and Eau Premiere today, courtesy of Macy’s testers. Ok, I’m also wearing Alien Flora Futura and Tiffany Intense LOL! Stopped by there after getting my son a video game for Christmas. They had quite a few Red Chanels. The SA said that people are still picking the regular bottles, because of the price difference. I asked her what she sells most, and was told Daisy, Light Blue, Jimmy Choo, and Flowerbomb. So, I bought the Red edp, but, I’m not opening it yet, in case the guilt becomes to much, and I want to return it. So no confession yet Donnetella! Oh, also, my BBW didn’t have Kalidiscope. They didn’t even know what I was talking about.

I do not know how you will resist the temptation of not opening that super gorgeous red bottle. I hope you survive! :D

I had the same experience with Kaleidoscope yesterday and today. They had no idea about it. As they said it might be an online exclusive or it will probably show up for the holidays, but they were not so positive about it. Anyway, my wallet appreciate it!

I convinced myself that in 2 years, I will look back and wished I had bought it. Idk though, It’s literally the most expensive perfume I’ve ever bought, and my guilt is pretty crushing. So, for now, it stays unopened.

I bet the bottle is lovely. If you do decide to keep it, enjoy!

You remember the Alien limited edition bottles I ‘had’ to have? Well I ended up returning them after I couldn’t make up my mind about which one to keep. The colors were much darker on one bottle than the other; I pondered for a couple days, looked at them in different light and still couldn’t decide; it ended up causing me stress! Luckily I hadn’t opened them either.

And I remembered someone here said perfume was to enjoy, not hoard. I already have a bottle of Alien in my stash.

Oh gosh, that’s awful the bottles caused that much stress, but I totally get it! Funny, Mugler USA, finally has those Alien bottles, and I keep thinking I want that one more. I currently don’t have an original Alien in my collection.

I’m not sure. It is a big price jump. Also the regular bottle will get included in the beauty sale, where the red one won’t. Of course on Christmas eve, people pretty much, just start grabbing what they can.

It is a big price jump. I thought it most likely to sway people who just wanted a “big” gift and weren’t necessarily planning on No. 5 to begin with.

SOTD is Fleurs de Sel – salty, herbal goodness. So I am participating. But I wish I was wearing my new bottle of Unsettled. Unfortunately, the bottle I was sent has a broken spray mechanism and I can’t get anything out. Lucky scent will be sending me another bottle (after checking its spray), so I will just have to be patient. I really wanted to see what it was like sprayed liberally on, as I had previously only tested it from a daub sample tube.

My precious Lucy is gone and I am devastated. Despite the medicine she’s been on her respiratory infection has been getting worse. I checked on her last night (have been keeping her covered, warm, still etc) but she was gone. I am sick and devastated and can’t stop crying. Cried all night. I have never loved an animal so much and I feel like I failed her somehow. I’m just sick to my stomach.

Ahhh, Monet! Others here have mentioned Giverny, and really, if you have the chance to visit (ie, if you’re going to Paris or thereabouts), do DO try to go. It’s nicest in late spring, around June. (I am not even sure it’s open year round?) The gardens are just breath-taking, and so is his much painted pond. The house is…meh. But you don’t go there for the house.

There’s also an art museum nearby (either Impressionist or maybe just Monet?), and a pretty fun auto museum. And some places that sell candles and perfume, though I haven’t bought any.

In Mohur today, because I forgot to wear Arabie this morning and Mohur was the most appealing of my EBP (Emergency Backup Perfume) scents at work. Mohur is never wrong.

Yeah, I liked it a lot :) It’s very small and manageable/relaxing, which made it perfect for a day out in the countryside!

A kind NSTer gave me a set of NVC travel sprays–10 mL bottles of Mohur, Trayee, and Bombay Bling. No better EBP set! I am always happy to smell like one of those three, even if they are not my top choice for that day.

Last night I went to 3 Bath and Body Works stores and I just visited the last one few minutes ago. They had no idea what Kaleidoscope was. I asked them to check on their website and they don’t know anything about its release. The managers told me it might be an online exclusive because they don’t have any orders coming in, unless it will show up at the stores for the holidays. I tried the body mist of In the Stars (they were not carrying the EdP) and it was very boring. A sweet citrusy scent that dissapeared 20 minutes later. The body lotion lasted a good hour, but nothing memorable. Money saved!

I am wearing Queen by Queen Latifah, an uplifting no-brainer for a day of nonsense meetings out of the office. Have a great day everyone!

That is why I do not have great expectations with the new releases of B&BW anymore. They are not interesting at all. I still have some eau de parfums from many years ago like Cherry Blossom, White Citrus, Cotton Blossom and even though they were not amazing perfumes they performed much better and were pretty decent. The boring In the Stars line might be another sign that Kaleidoscope is on the same vein. So if I happen to see it in the stores later I will give it a try, but I will not look for it specifically again.

Enjoying my sample of Memo Tiger’s Nest again. I finally figured out what it reminds me of: Tauer L’Air du Désert Marocain. It smelled rally familiar, I’m glad to have finally solved the mystery.

No food yet today, due to an early-morning traumatic vet trip. She’s sleeping it off right now, but hopefully she’ll perk up for supper. Thanks so much for your kind thoughts.

I only just learned of the existence of this scent, and found the name very intriguing. Have you tried Byredo 1996? Does that smell just like LADDM to you? I’m trying to find people to agree with me so I don’t feel like I’m going crazy.

I own 1996 and it does not remind me of LADDM. On me, 1996 is iris, leather and patchouli. LADDM is more amber, incense and spice.

Ok, well…that’s two no votes then. I get iris, leather, and patchouli from LADDM, though! But it sounds like my nose is the wonky one. Or maybe I need to spend more time with my sample of 1996.

I recently sampled Tiger’s Nest and I’m sure I need a bottle, though I may be restrained and only get a travel spray.

I’ve gone very classic and feminine with Love, Chloe. Of course, I finally decide I like this and buy a bottle AFTER it has been discontinued …

Was in Kenzo Amour as I kept someone company while getting a CT scan.

Heading to see Boz Scaggs tonight, so am thinking something that won’t be too noticeable to those around but will make me know it’s there. Either more Amour or the Jasmins Marzipane I think.

More Amour! It’s one of my faves. I have very fond memories of listening to Bos Skaggs in my long-ago college days. Have fun!

It’s been that kind of a week, so I’m firmly wearing Wood Sage and Sea Salt and have been for the last two days. It’s my “ultimate blankie comfort scent”, and I really need it. Just trying to stay afloat and not drown, and then the universe starts throwing all the punches right at me.

PSA: If you loved (or missed) And The World is Yours by A Lab on Fire, luckyscent has it back in stock. I tried it. It’s gorgeous.

Hugs, love and peace to everyone. It’s been a rough week.

Hugs, peace and love right back to you. I know what you mean about just trying to stay afloat, sometimes things come in such quick succession, you can’t catch a breath. I’m wishing you a deep breath and calm.

It certainly has been a tough week so far and it’s only day 2 of a work week.

My very good friend had the devastating news that her beloved doggie passed away last night. He had been sick but after having tests done, they were mostly given the ‘ok’. Sadly he took a turn for the worse and and could not come out of it. She is just heartbroken.

Another good friend (who lost her husband last year in a freak accident) was going to meet is in Florida next week. She messaged me that she probably can’t make it; she is helping look after her Dad as his cancer has returned. All the sadness and horrible things happening right now makes me want to run away and hide!

I’m wearing some L’Attessa and La Pausa to calm myself down.

Extra points for a lovely photo pick today Robin!!
I had a bad reaction to immortelle yesterday which after scrubbing well seemed to linger still today. I grabbed my emergency free dabber in my makeup kit at the great and it was a surprise sample of Child Perfume
    EdP.

I’m late to the discussion, but my thoughts, prayers and feelings for everyone who is going through a difficult situation right now. We have a good group here and we all care about each other, and hopefully that can bring some comfort, too.

It finally is less cold where I am, so I broke out The Different Company Sienne d’Orange.

I’m late today. It was busy, since I went to PT, then to tour a senior day activity center that my mom could possibly go to if she comes to live with me this winter. It’s an excellent and impressive place, and they have space, but it made me worry a bit about whether she’d be eligible. It’s for people with mild to moderate dementia and they do their own assessment. So many activities: choir, which she would love, card playing, art, pool, putting green, garden club, Bible study. The people there looked happy and interested. Well, after that I had a haircut at Ulta and smelled a few things and sprayed on some sort of Coco light—NOT Mademoiselle, which I despise—pretty nice! Then I had to take poor Dusty to the vet for a bad ear infection, which really stinks. Poor kitty, he’s so scared. He got an antibiotic and steroid shot and some ear goop and I do hope he’ll improve soon.

Oh, I must have missed about your mom coming to live with you. That might take some worry off of you. I’m curious about the perfume you tried, it might have been Coco Mademoiselle Intense? Which I think is quite different from the current Mademoiselle.

I hope your mother qualifies. It sounds like a wonderful place to live.

I really hope your kitty’s ear is better soon. Cats and ear goop sounds like a painful combination.
