Monday scent of the day 11/12

Posted by Robin on 12 November 2018 232 Comments

Boom, it's Monday again. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm running late again, in Monocle + Comme des Garçons Scent One: Hinoki.

Reminder: on 11/16, wear a savory perfume (something spicy, herbal, salty, or otherwise foody but not sweet). Suggested by Jalapeno.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: shown is the inside of the CDG Teeth and Tongue Wallet, $175 at Bluefly.

Jo Malone Wood Sage & Sea Salt. Not foody, but definitely salty.

Tried Woodsage etc the other day and it is actually memorable. I think it could be a winter staple. On my “to try again” list!

I love it, and I got a discounted bottle a while ago, in a moment of weakness. No regrets, to me it’s basically a narcissus on steroids. Hence spring.
I find it a bit trashy, actually, but that is a plus in my book.

Scent twin! Wore it to the nursing home to visit my mom. I often wear incense because it reminds me to be patient, kind and loving when I don’t always feel that way.

Wearing Jo Malone BlackBerry & Bay (thanks Downtown Scott!)
Beautiful sunny, bright, cool day. I am having brunch with a friend in a while and then going to see with her kids The Lion King on Broadway. This is the 3rd time for me attending the show, but I never get tired of it.
I might stop later at B&BW to try their new Kaleidoscope perfume. Not so much hopes, but it has been a while since they released an EdP, so let’s see how this “iris” scent performs.
    Have a happy Monday everyone!

I’ve never smelled that one, but it reminds me of my mom’s Christmas tradition of gifting my dad a Terry’s chocolate orange as a stocking stuffer every year. When I was a kid, he would sometimes let me do the honor of giving the orange a good whack to break it open :)

There’s nothing quite like taking out all your frustrations on a sphere of orange-scented chocolate, and then eating it.

Orange Chocolat was one of the YR Christmas limited-edition lines in I think 2010, and they released a matching scent to go with the shower gel, hand lotion, and lip balm they do every year. It smells pretty much exactly like a Terry’s Chocolate Orange, and is gorgeous. I live in hope that they’ll resurrect it.

If you want a scent, or at least a scent-adjacent product, with the same smell, Beards and Beavers does a beard oil called Smashing (geddit?) which would also double nicely as a perfume oil. It’s tremendous.

I’m wearing Sideris today. The incense/ herb/ amber combo is killer. Let’s just say that Donatella is going to be hearing about this one at the end of the year.

My thoughts are with everyone in California and everyone who is having a hard time remembering family and friends today, as well as with so many others who are suffering for too many reasons. May peace grow throughout the world.

Just getting organised for trip to London to see some play at the ATP Finals tennis, so am not smelling of anything very much, in fact I didn’t even bother showering (!) – I will, however, be doing so tomorrow at stupid o’clock as we have to be at the airport by 5:30am! Just swithering between taking my Privet Bloom rollerball or the sample of Muguet Porcelaine I acquired earlier in the year – the PB is considerably older, so I should probably go with that. Not much smellies-related things on the ‘to do’ list, though I will be going to the new Byredo stand-alone shop, Atkinson’s in the Burlington Arcade (thank you again, Robin!) & an intriguing sounding business called Floral Street in Covent Garden. Will also pop by Penhaligon’s, though I’m not as big a fan as I was. Hopefully I will manage to acquire some samples of things I haven’t tried before – as ever, handcarry only precludes a major purchase.

It is indeed a real word, apparently Scottish in origin, ironic as I didn’t know that but have lived here for a long time so have obviously just picked it up. Its meaning is ‘uncertain as to which course of action to take’, which I did know & which I’m sure you surmised from my use of it. I’m so pleased you enjoyed it & look forward to hearing your own use of it!

It’s just after 4am as I type this, Robin – stupid o’clock indeed! Their website is pretty comprehensive, but I think the fragrances may be a tad young for me, given what seems to be their target audience, but if we’re in the area (& we usually are) I’ll pop past & have a look.

I was up early and into urgent care first thing this morning for pink eye! Ack! I always think of this as a kids affliction and have managed to avoid it for my entire life. Luckily I am off work today and hopefully my eye is looking better by tomorrow, or I will be home again.
SotD is TDC Bois d’Iris. A recent swapmeet new to me perfume. I wore it yesterday for the first time and really liked it. I could swear I get just a faint note of incense, which must be the vetiver or cedar.

Oh, yuck. I’ve had it a few times, mostly related to sinus infections. It clears up quickly with drops, though. And warm compresses help a lot.
And you smell great! I always liked that one, but never acquired any.

Yuck is right! I went from a little redness at bedtime to full on crusted over eyelid this morning. Disgusting. My daughter reminded me of when Bob Costas had it in both eyes and continued to do on air reporting during the Winter Olympics. Poor guy! I have the drops too and won’t be contagious after 24 hours of them, but if my eye still looks like it does I will stay home. I don’t need to be freaking patients out. Lol.

Ugh. Sorry about the pink eye. I was one of THOSE kids, who seemed to get it every now and then.

We had a cat who developed it once as complication from respiratory infection. I had to keep her in the closet, swaddle her and do drops. She hated me at first until it dawned on her it made her feel better. But it cleared up quickly. Yours will too I’m sure.

In Knowing needing something familiar and cozy. New furnace installed last Tuesday is already on the fritz. Probably the pump. The company is not sending anyone until late this afternoon and I am COLD.

Random and randomer questions to follow:

Anyone tried the ELDO I AM TRASH perfume yet? If so, please share your thoughts.

Anyone bought a mattress recently? It is time for us and I am totally overwhelmed by the number of mattresses on the market and number of meh reviews of said mattresses. Consumer Reports has made me none the wiser. Seeking a memory foam mattress only.

About three years ago we got a Simmons Beautyrest “black” label extra firm deluxe type mattress It was hands down my fav at the store after we tried a bunch out. Oh my god I love the mattress. If there was a fire at my house, I’d figure out a way to throw it out the window. It is so comfortable. I don’t know what it’s equivalent is today, but it was expensive and so worth it.

We got a Tempurpedic about 10 years ago and I still love it. It felt like I was sleeping on the floor the first night or two. But then I fell in love.

Can’t recommend any current models…they don’t sell ours anymore. And it does seem to have gotten more complicated.

Old school is still the best way. Go and lay down on a bunch of different ones. It’s a really important purchase.

Ours (TempurPedic is about 13 years old and has become a little lumpy (as have we!). Time to replace it, but the world of mattresses has gotten a whole lot more complicated since our last purchase.

Oakland Fresca, I tried I AM TRASH, am draining my sample, and already ordered a 30ml bottle (with a 20% off coupon this weekend). I wouldn’t say the juice smells revolutionary, but it is a very cheerful (probably more fruity than floral) fragrance with just a tiny twist in it to keep me interested. It is definitely my favorite from D. Andrier so far. I don’t know how much this answers your questions, but let me know if I could be more helpful.

Sorry you are cold. I hate shopping for mattresses, they deliberately confuse the consumer by producing models for certain stores under other names for other stores so you can’t do proper price and feature comparisons. You just need to go to the stores and try them out, WITH your spouse. Mattresses behave quite differently when there is an occupant size differential and with the effect of moving around and getting up and down.

Cozy and rich in DSH’s Oiellets Rouges. ( And I looked up the spelling this time. :-) ) Close to the end of a 15 ml bottle of this. Debating whether to get more…
The news out of California is heart-breaking. So many dead and missing. I saw a tweet from someone begging for help to evacuate 40 horses. What a nightmare.
Looking at photos of WW1 vets also touching. I saw an image of a battalion of young men headed off to war in 1914, looked like maybe 150 people or so. Then there was the picture of who all came home in 1917. Less than 2 dozen. So much sacrifice.
Then a touching picture of Macron and Merkel standing side by side this weekend, giving Putin the united stone face of disapproval. Ah, our world…
I remember my father who was a medic for 2 years in WWII in England, treating the bomber crews who made it back. I remember my uncle who flew 52 bomber missions over Germany, was shot down twice, but who made it back. I remember the father of my first serious relationship, who spend four years in the infantry, walking and fighting the entire length of Italy, and made it back.
I split a few weeks worth of firewood this weekend, and baked some delicious chocolate chip/coconut/amaranth cookies. Small comforts. I count my blessings…

My older son recently came across the same pair of photos you mentioned of the battalion that was almost entirely wiped out by 1917. He found it extremely troubling as well. Last night my husband, who was born and raised in Scotland, shared stories from his school where entire classes of boys were wiped out each year as they aged into their year for conscription for the world wars–but especially WWI. It is part of the school identity and character now.

News of the fires here is terrible. So far, I do not know anyone who is personally impacted (not so in the past) but the entire state is grieving, especially for Thousand Oaks.

EMERGENCY UPDATE: @LAFDFoundation needs your help. We’re requesting donations at http://supportLAFD.org to provide hydration backpacks for @LAFD firefighters working tirelessly to contain the fires across Southern California. Any amount of money you can spare makes a difference.

It was very expensive for us. It was not the matress we we’re originally wanting but when we laid down on it there was no going back. Buying matresses is tricky and everyone has their preference. It is ridiculous to agonize over something so boring and necessary but so expensive.

I am really enjoying the scent of all the rhododendron fragrantissimum ( big white flowers) that grow so abundantly down here. The scent is very strong and is almost like super strength jasmine that has been soaked in carnation oil, so heady, sweet and a dash of clove spice. It fills the air in my garden. I haven’t ever come across rhodendron as a perfume note and I think the closest thing might be magnolia. Was going to wear epice marine but have gone for a Jurlique rose instead. I saw somewhere that this was australia’s best selling perfume last year . It’s cheap and good.

Hah, well, I would need to start by saying I loved Lincoln in the Bardo????! But I really did, I was completely absorbed and all those fears I had about the book being gimmicky turned out to be completely irrelevant (for me, at least).

I think the most enjoyable thing I’ve read recently was Madeleine Miller’s Circe. I accidentally left my paper copy in the office and had to buy the book on Kindle so that I could finish the last 100 pages, as I couldn’t wait for one day. I think Sally Rooney’s much-hyped books (Conversations with Friends and Normal People) are well worth reading, the same goes for Otessa Moshfegh’s My Year of Rest and Relaxation. All three are very zeitgeisty, though, which is not everyone’s thing.

For those who can do SFF, I cannot recommend N.K. Jemisin’s Broken Earth trilogy higly enough. It is breathtaking and there is nothing else like it. And for an even smaller subsection of people who love highly complex space opera (a la Ann Leckie and Iain M. Banks), I very much recommend Yoon Ha Lee’s The Machineries of Empire series (starts with Ninefox Gambit). It demands focus, but will blow your mind.

I’ve been reading quite a bit of non-fiction recently. On the more personal side, I thought Tara Westover’s Educated was stunning and The Little Virtues by Natalia Ginzburg was a little gem – written in post-war Italy, but with such a modern voice. And I finally read Didion’s The White Album and loved it.

On the more educational side, I’ve seen Factfulness mentioned already. Timothy Snyder’s The Road to Unfreedom is an important book and so intellectually impressive. Harari’s latest less so, but he is accessible and fun to read. If you are interested in space travel, try Michio Kaku’s The Future of Humanity and if you are starting to forget your Greek Myths, Stephen Fry’s Mythos is a lovely retelling.

For poetry: Claudia Rankine’s Citizen (not traditional poetry, I know), Emily Wilson’s new translation of The Odyssey and Wislawa Szymborska. In comics, Saga continues to reign supreme, but Monstress is an amazing newcomer.

And my favourite Gaiman is Neverwhere, because it was my first.

In Santal Majuscule which is not behaving nicely today, I have liked it on a previous occasion, there’s a note I don’t care for, some kind of musk, oh well, never mind. Enjoying a bowl of soup I made at the weekend.

Go for it, mine was very simple: cauliflower, onions and potatoes with a vegetable cube for flavor, but it was very delicious. Our cauliflowers in the UK are homegrown and very good.

Boom indeed! Last night, after our concert (which went very well!), we were all hanging out, and the boyfriend said at about 9pm, “So…when are we going home?” “In a couple hours,” I said in a relaxed tone, peachy as a pumpkin. His eyebrows shot up as he said, “But…I have to wake up at 6:45 tomorrow.” And that was when I realized that it was Sunday night and that the following day (today) is a workday. So yeah, Monday came upon me quickly.

Wearing PHI Une Rose de Kandahar today, which in no way abides by the community project but is just the right amount of warmth for a cheerless, smoky Monday (the air quality here in northern CA is much better today than it was last week, but still pretty bad). I want to wear Arabie for said project, but I’ll be traveling to Idaho for work later this week, so I’ll have to find some samples that work instead.

Agreed! Wouldn’t that be amazing if we won?! I never play either so stand no chance of ever winning, but I like to dream big!

I don’t know which way to go to get out of all this smoke! I’ve been in a hotel the last few workdays, and was so looking forward to exploring coastal California on my days off, especially Monterey, etc. So sad so many people and animals have lost so much. Thank God for all the first responders who take bravery to a whole new level. From firefighters driving through tunnels of flame, to a nurse trying to evacuate patients with her scrub pants literally on fire, to an MD trying to complete an emergency surgery while the facility was shutting down! People are amazing sometimes.

Allure today from a bottle that was either my sister’s or my mom’s that I kept. I like this. My husband’s review was “Nice. Floral. Basic.”

Shout out to Sylvaine Delacourte customer service. I ordered the vanilla discovery set in early October. It still hasn’t arrived, even though they had the right address. They’re very kindly sending a new set. No idea what happened. It’s really kind of them, given it’s free shipping and the set was so cheap.

    SOTD = L’AP Safran Troublant

Spicy and creamy, full credit for the gourmand / not sweet theme!

I also just got and am wearing Aftelier Alchemy, a new perfume from Mandy. She used the materials she had left from the first perfume she made for Aftelier Perfume. I’ve never smelled the original but this one smells like a blend of Cuir the Gardenia without the sharp animalic pitch of Cuir de Gardenia (which I love) and Vanilla Smoke. Well done. It is limited edition and my FOMO instinct kicked in and I bought 2. Also on tap for some other time is Curious – I have a sample of the liquid perfume as well as the EDP.

I’m looking for a recommendation on cross-body cell phone cases that can fit the cell phone and a set of keys (car key fob plus house keys). I would like it to be really flat and unobstrusive and should not look like a bulky purse. Always thinking of a disaster scenario, when one is at work and we have to evacuate, we’re told to leave everything (yes, that means purse) except our cell phone. I always have my ID around my neck and the ID case has a credit card and an ATM card. I would not have my driver’s license with me but I am not very concerned about that since I took a picture of it with my cell phone.

Hajusuuri – Michael Kors has some great cross body bags, some of which are round – although a nice small size , and others are quite flat. The nice thing (you probably know this already) is that in addition to his HUGE selection, you can get these goodies at the outlets for a very decent price. Did I mention that he also has every color under the sun and that some have 2 types of handles for variety?

Are you planning to wear it all day, every day? In case you are called to evacuate from someplace not near your desk? If the fire alarm went off and I was sitting at my desk, there is no way I’m leaving without my purse.

Yes. Although now that I think about it, I don’t need to have my car key fob as I can always Uber home and get the duplicate key fob. I will wear a set of my house keys on my workID pouch. Phone wise, I have a Coach x Peanuts collaboration crossbody bag that I could likely use for this purpose.

In an active shooter scenario, you may be told to drop your bag before coming out of the building so better to have it inside the office rather than randomly having to drop it somewhere.

SoTD is QUA by Chris Rusak from his sample pack.
QUA is short for “Quasi un Absurdia”
I had that exact reaction mentioned above in the Jovoy article – This stuff is magic, it is instant love for a green opening, it is fresh and light, like you have been hit full power with a beam of sunlight. There is lily pollen which I think is the cause of that beautiful burst, but this is very airy and bright, not heavy at all.
I am one hour in and it is quieter now and close to the skin. Wow.
(It is 91% all natural ingredients.)

Taking advantage of having the day off work for the holiday and wearing Arabie for the CP. I smell like all the spices. I just sat down at one of my favorite restaurants for a lunch of fried chicken, mac n cheese, collard greens, and biscuit.

After this I’m meeting my boyfriend at his follow up appointment with the surgeon who performed his appendectomy two weeks ago. It’s very timely since he started having belly pain last night. We think he may have an abcess because they can develop two weeks after an appendectomy, especially for a perforated appendix that he had. Sigh. We have concert tickets tonight for a band we can probably never see again, so he’s quite anxious to be able to attend. The band is Goblin, an Italian synth prog-rock band. They scored the original Suspiria in the late 70s and tonight are performing the score while the movie is shown and doing an additional set after.

Don’t get me wrong, the abcess is worrisome, but we really hope treatment can be prolonged until tomorrow.

Update: the doctor wasn’t terribly concerned and said it could be fluid build up. They drew blood and will likely call tomorrow with results or to order a CT scan. He has a fever of 100, which didn’t seem to alarm them. Phew. We’ll deal with whatever comes tomorrow and will go to our concert tonight!

I’m recovering from two straight hours of drilling at the dentist’s this morning. Sadly I’ve had to have three crowns in a row put on my lower right molars. It’s best to get them all done at once, but meant for a major expense and, now that the anaesthetic has worn off, some major pain. Yow! I have temporary caps for 2-3 weeks while they send out the moods for the permanent ones to be made. Not a fun time, and it’s cold, gray, and dreary outside. I’ve been wearing Camel a lot lately and decided to spring for a full bottle. I need some kind of reward for all this suffering, right?
