Tuesday scent of the day 11/6

Posted by Robin on 6 November 2018 249 Comments

Tuesday, and if you're in the US, you probably already noticed it's Election Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

We're doing another day of rain, apparently. I'm pretending it's a hot day in August with Carthusia Mediterraneo.

Reminder: on 11/9, wear a fragrance by Carthusia, CB I Hate Perfume, Comptoir Sud Pacifique or Czech & Speake, if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter C.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: Grace Teaware Porcelain Scallop 5 cup teapot comes in red or black, and it's $32 at Amazon. Hat tip to Calypso!

You smell lovely, Robin. I went considerably more cold-weather-scent than Mediterraneo – am in Cuir Mauresque layered with a bit of Rose Anonyme. The combination seems to evoke a dry iris note that may (or may not) be in either fragrance. Love it.

And your combo sounds delicious. Maybe I will do a lighter version later today with Hermessences.

Tea is a cappuccino, and chubby buddha made me the foam by using the machine. Too cute. Tomorrow is Diwali so we listened to some kirtan this morning and danced around…my father in law is going to my little ones school and will tell the story of Diwali on a 2 year old level.

I am in Encens Mythique today, so that is what the streets of NYC smell like today as I am off to the voting polls…
I saw they are discontinuing some of the others in this collection, I hope not EM! Does anyone know?

I used to know how to say Happy New Year in Gujarati but I forget. Happy Diwali anyway. My multi-faith multi- ethnic family celebrates everything, and my Jewish/Christian/Dutch/Canadian grand daughter is taking her Indian/Hindu/Canadian uncle to her preschool to do that same talk.
I’m wearing Ummagumma because I’m feeling something dark and stormy after spending an hour and twenty minutes on the phone with Bell because my tv keeps freezing and the picture breaks up. When the person on the phone thanked me for my patience we both knew she was lying.

Sorry about your TV, but thanks for mentioning ‘Bell’.
Bell Telephone was our service provider a million years ago, when I was a child and we had a party line with the people across the street.
And dinosaurs roamed the earth. Good times.

Oh my…we used to have a party line too but we called it panty line ????

We could tell the other household had “older” people (I.e. the kids of the household were already in college). We were all under 10 and somehow got away with tormenting them. Yeah, naughty is my middle name.

In AdV Cierge de Lune. Sample “thunk”. I liked it and enjoyed it the couple of times I tried it. A very nice, no brainer, ambery vanilla scent, but not full bottle worthy for me.

I’m wearing vintage Parfum de Peau from Montana, a dirty rose if there ever was one. I love the spicy animal edge, and the bottle is very cool in a dated way. Apparently the same perfumer did La Nuit by Paco Rabanne which has been on my try list for years.

I was going to wear Skive by Canoe Goods. They’re a leather shop that sells one great natural perfume. It doesn’t get any smaller than that.

However, I noticed my vintage mini of Bel Ami, so Skive will have to wait.

I hope you will give Skive a whirl soon enough. It’s such a unique leather scent, with great depth. I got a bottle of it after reading Luca Turin’s enthusiastic review. I don’t wear it often enough, I need to remedy that situation.. and speaking of leather scents, I am excited about Hiram Green’s new one, Hyde, another all natural perfume. Almost toying with idea of buying FB unsniffed.. ????

I went to see Joan Baez last night. She’s on her Farewell Tour and it was a wonderful concert. Just her, her son Gabe on percussion, a woman singing harmony, and a guy playing a variety of other instruments. Also I was so happy to see that her guitar tech was a woman. She included Diamonds and Rust, Hello In There, Deportee, Love is a Four Letter Word, House of the Rising Sun, and her encore was The Boxer. It’s hard to believe she is almost 78.
    SOTM is Champagne de Bois.
Now I am going back to bed because Bertie Wooster woke me at 4 a.m. knocking stuff off the guest room dresser.

Tendre Poison called my name this morning. I still say the best of the flankers. I will be voting later ,on this cold rainy/windy day. I picked up a little bottle of Paris Hilton Rose something for my daughter on clearance. I have to say it smells pretty good, and the bottle is adorable.

Tendre is sorta kinda a precursor to Mugler Aura EDP to my nose. Do you agree?

SotD is Bois d’Iris by The Different Company. I used to wear this to work a lot, but I seem to prefer Iris Nazarena this year as my ‘work-iris’. Still a lovely scent though.

I think I’ll switch to something more dramatic/opulent this evening…
Its getting dark and cold in the evening, and then I start to crave big white flowers or a spicy incense.

SotD = Tam Dao + Assam of India

TD dabbed from a sample with Assam spritzed over. They work together quite nicely. I’m rather chuffed.

    I voted, yay!

Yesterday a close friend disclosed something to me from their past that was scary, sad, heartbreaking. I’m so sorry for what happened to them, and appreciate that they shared it with me. So much of what I have observed and appreciated and wondered about this person now makes better sense.

Shame and secrecy are iron bars over the heart. Openness and honesty are liberating. It can be a long hard road to reach that moment of shared intimacy when hard secrets can be exposed.

I love perfume and all you NSTers even more today than yesterday. Feeling very grateful for this community! 😀

I’m wearing Providence Perfume Co Sedona Sweetgrass, from a sample that arrived yesterday. Def not a powerhouse perfume so far, very quiet, meditative skin scent for me but it’s really beautiful. Jammy (from piñón pine) incense at this stage. Waiting for the advertised mezcal notes to come up. I actually got a second sample for a friend who does not like “perfumy” perfumes but loves mezcal so I want to make sure these notes are there and use this sample as a bait to lure her into the world of all natural perfumes. ????

I’m wearing Parfum de Therese today. I really must stop obtaining new things, there’s so much that I already love and seldom wear. I am contemplating a no-buy for 2019 (with exceptions for estate sales and NST events, cause that’s too much fun). If I can only wear anything twice a year, I really don’t need more than a sample vial of anything!

Yesterday, I said sadly to my boyfriend, “It’s so unfortunate that I always seem to be acquiring perfume at a faster rate than I’m using it.” He burst out laughing and said, “Are you serious? Of course you are! How could there be any question?”

Which made me feel pretty sad.

Anyway, I do need to sell or swap my Parfum de Therese. It’s really not my thing.

Don’t feel sad, Koyel. Just because you aren’t wearing a certain perfume right now, doesn’t take away from its value. Sometimes we go back to them, and sometimes not. For me, they are like people. Some are long term relationships. Some great love afairs. Some family. Some aquantices. All hold a value.

Lashings of it and I smell pretty darn good. Rainy all day but I suppose wet is better than too dry!

I am making couscous for our office potluck. The couscous itself will be commando save for a pinch of salt and some olive oil. I am looking for easy to make mix-ins and will let people decide what to add. Right now, I’m thinking chopped up sundried tomato, whole pine nuts, cranberries, golden raisins. What kind of cheese would be good? Ideas for any mix-ins / toppings?

To me, couscous needs to be pretty loaded to counteract its blandness – I would offer some herbs that people could add in. I would add all the Tabouleh toppings – tons of chopped parsley, mint, tomato, cucumber, and the above mentioned feta (the Israeli feta from Trader Joe’s is very good). Now I’m hungry.

Since a few posters have covered more typical mix-ins for couscous, I will suggest more unusual options:

      1) Canned mandarin oranges, with the juice drained.
      2) Chopped walnuts
      3) Chopped up cooked chicken meat, your choice as to light or dark
      4) Green onions or purple onions, raw, for some “Zip!”

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone! Now I will need to rope in colleagues to bring in some of the mix-ins! I need to strategize as to what to bring in when since I have a train commute plus I am going to Philly for a day trip the day before the event.

You smell like summer, Robin and what an elegant teapot.

I was in Diorling today but coming home I had an urge for Loulou with its plum and tuberose which is a combination I love, I realized this recently, but it’s ridiculous I own so many with these 2 notes.

Oh! It’s a very popular combination though, Poison is one example. In addition to Loulou, I have Guy Laroche Clandestine, Robert Beaulieu Vison Noir, Mary Greenwell Plum and Oleg Cassini, my collection lacks editing in this respect.

I lkke to match my perfume with the colour of what I’m wearing, today I’m wearing a dress with purple and orange, which is a bit of a challenge – something citrusy for the orange, or iris for the blue? I couldn’t decide, so will be wearing Bois d’Encens, which is neither 🙂

Aw, I forgot to play along AGAIN. Though I have far fewer C scents than I had B scents :-/ Did we do an A week? Clearly I’ve forgotten about it. Are we working our way through the alphabet? For Z week, I will wear Camel every day.

I am wearing the very very easy Aerin Rose de Grasse because I had a doctor’s appointment this morning. I had wanted to wear Tabac Citron from my brand new decant from the very generous fearsmice, but I didn’t want to wear a wild card around a doctor.

Have I ever mentioned my hand problems here on NST? My right hand has been in a lot of pain, and I thought it was carpal tunnel or a CMC joint issue, but I’m delighted to tell you it was just tendinitis! (De Quervain’s tenosynovitis, if you’re curious.) My options were to just let it heal naturally or to get a cortisone shot, but given that I couldn’t rest it enough to heal naturally for MONTHS, even while I was on vacation far away from a computer, I caved and got the cortisone shot. Fingers crossed (the ones on my left hand) that this solves the issue permanently. I’ll probably keep mousing with my left hand, though, a habit I formed some months ago because of my right hand pain.

Americans: Go vote! I mailed in my ballot this weekend 🙂 Strengthen our democracy!

A weird coincidence? I dunno, but I was diagnosed with De Quervain’s a couple of years ago. Fortunately it was in my left hand, so I was able to keep it braced and let it heal naturally. Hope that shot brings you relief!!!

Had a rare day in the city. First I went to the Chanel boutique where a nice SA left me be to sniff at will. 28 La Pausa now my favourite. Paris Deauville nice but TOO fleeting. Then on to sniff a whole bunch of brands: Byredo, Memo, 2 vanillas Eau Duelle and AC Vanilla Incensee (?spelling). AC VI smelled like coffee and I’m still not a vanilla person. Did not buy anything at all (a first for me), but did get some samples. Some By Killians, though unfortunately not the older ones that I’m interested in. A good day!

I am wearing a whole lot of California Reverie – I’m at home, and decided to spray with abandon for once. (I’m a bit of a scaredy cat about overapplying, which isn’t helping my perfume get used up!). Five sprays instead of two, and I smell incredible. I love this perfume so much.

I was examining my perfume collection and realized that a) it’s surprisingly large and b) I think I have something to fit all of my important categories. I still don’t have a “low-key casual amber” or a “scent that smells like the air from the rose greenhouses I used to work in”, but I can surely do without. (And I’m pretty sure the second one doesn’t exist.)

Love the teapot in the picture.

I am wearing CSP Vanille Citrus. Spotted the little metal bottle in my collection, so I put some on. I find that it can be strong and lasting, so I had to be careful to just spritz a little bit on.

I’ve been having non-stop political stress for the last 6 weeks or so. I needed fortification for voting today, so I slapped on some vintage Byzance, and it was grand. It worked well for the subsequent errands, etc. of the day.

Tonight I’m trying out the goodies from the split meet, which conveniently arrived on the same day. The Sel de Vetiver is even better than I remembered from my tiny sample. The L’Heure Perdue ….hmmm….it might not be quite the thing for me. It starts off very lomongrass-ish, then goes through a blessedly brief period of buttered popcorn, then settles down into nonstop powder. I’m hoping it will be salvaged in the far dry down.
