Monday scent of the day 11/5

Posted by Robin on 5 November 2018 225 Comments

Oh dear, Monday again. It's also SWINTON’s birthday and Guy Fawkes Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Christian Lacroix Tumulte Homme, perfect for the chilly rain we're having today.

Reminder: on 11/9, wear a fragrance by Carthusia, CB I Hate Perfume, Comptoir Sud Pacifique or Czech & Speake, if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter C.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is detail from Christian Lacroix's Fétiche Arlequin Wallpaper ("An eclectic decoupage of imagery combining vintage prints with south American Aztec patterns. This stunning wallpaper from Christian Lacroix is digitally printed as a panel set which can be repeated around a room for a dazzling visual effect. Printed onto a smooth non-woven ground for ease of hanging."

    Rain Rain go away…

Everything is coming up roses today. I washed my hair in rose shampoo and conditioner. Use a rose smelling shower foam. Wearing Ma Rose from Fragonard from a towelette sample.

I am a few pages away from finishing The English Patient then it will go back to the library. I note my favorite lines from the book and this is describing Kip: “She loves most the wet colours of his neck when he bathes. And his chest with with its sweat which her fingers grip when he is over her, and the dark, tough arms in the darkness of his tent, or one time in her room when light from the valley’s city, finally free of curfew, rose among them like twilight and lit the colour of his body.”

You smell great! I love the PPC oils – don’t you find they radiate differently than perfumes? They’re sort of waftier, like you won’t smell anything for a few minutes and then you’ll get a sudden delicious waft.

I chose Le Galion Iris this morning. It’s lovely, but today I find myself wondering how it would layer with Tam Dao. Hmm.

I did try it, and it’s pretty good! I need to play with the proportions a bit (was a chicken and went a little too light on the Tam Dao), but will definitely be experimenting with this. The Le Galion can be a tiny bit sharp at times, and in theory Tam Dao’s smoothness should calm that down. Plus, what’s not to like about sandalwood and iris, as you pointed out. 🙂

Hi NSTers! I’m in A La Rose this morning, which is surprisingly more nuanced in the cold weather. I love it even more now.

So, I’m looking for recommendations for a sandalwood for my brother who loves Santal 33 but is finding it way too ubiquitous to feel special in it. He wore Carolina Herrera for a decade, too. Any thoughts?

FM Dries van Noten is spectacular!

If that’s a bit too sweet, then Diptyque Tam Dao (EDP I believe) is a bit more subtle but really a perfect perfume.

    ☕☕☕????????????????????????☕☕☕
My small-ish brand that begins with C – Chanel No 5 EDP, in the burgundy bottle. Red if you hold it up to the light constantly, or place on a sunny windowsill. But no one here would be foolish enough to do that! Right? ☺????????????
    I am a POLYSANTOLSEXUAL.
    Apparently. ????LOLOLOL ????
Sprayed some cards with 5 EDP on Friday at the mall.
Placed on my nightstand, and kept on smelling Samsara. Huh ?
Did some research, and POLYSANTOL is in both Samsara and 5 EDP. Had to have that burgundy bottle! !!

In Diptyque Eau Rose by mistake. My hand grabbed and sprayed on the wrong sample this morning. It was dark and I was sleepy. Not season appropriate, so I layered it with some patchouli essential oil.
Eau Rose is THUNK and another sample gone. Fall/Winter thunking has started. Let’s see how many samples and decants I will reduce this season.

I’m testing Vilhelm’s Dear Polly today, which I REALLY like – you might call it a bergamot-tea chypre – except that it’s awfully faint. I think I’m going to drain the whole sample vial next time to see if a larger quantity helps, but at Vilhelm prices I don’t think I can justify even a mini if I’m having to jam my nose against my wrist all the time. Money saved!

Spent a whole bunch of time going through decants yesterday, and was thrilled to find one of Le Labo Benjoin. I think that one needs to be my birthday present next year, I keep draining samples of it. Anybody know if you can get it year-round at the NY flagship store or do I have to wait for their once a year city exclusive sale? I think that’s the Moscow scent.

Anyway, I am wearing Iris Nazarena today.

SOTD Bottega Veneta for back to work after vacay, sigh. I’m in an early morning 3 hour training and am eating leftover office Halloween candy out of boredom. My coworker sitting across the table is wafting Jessica McClintock- nice, fresh, and keeping me awake.
In other scented news, I bought the Le Labo Basil scent hair conditioner. I was so thrilled they expanded the Basil products since I liked the scent much more than the Hinoki one, but they only had shower gel originally, I think. Great wake me up this am and it’s fairly rich so I don’t have to use a ton.

It does the job (detangle and some defrizzing) and I only need like a quarter-sized amount compared to the stuff I was using before (which costs the same). Might be too heavy for very fine hair. But, I bought it for the smell, really.

It’s one of BV’s pillars, so I doubt they’ll d/c it. But you never know…
It’s a bit heavy so I just use less. It’s the same price as most salon brand conditioners (I think it was $26), so way more than drugstore ones but not more than, say, Davines or R +Co etc.

Happy Monday, friends! Thanks to the time change, waking up at 6:30 was easy peasy. The sun was already up and I felt not one bit like death. That said, I am going to try my hardest to leave work by 4:15, before the s***show that is the first rush hour in the dark after the time change begins.

I am drenched in Olfactive Studio Lumiere Blanche today! What a beeeautiful scent. But it disappears on me roughly instantly, so I went with hajusuuri’s “more is more” concept and gave myself > 10 spritzes. As a result, it’s still present 1.5 h after application. Even so, I suspect it’ll be gone by lunchtime.

Be well, all! (sigh, I miss waterdragon)

    Commuting Woes No. 611:

Yucky rainy day and now another excuse which NJ Transit will milk for all it’s worth. 30-minute delays due to slippery track conditions. Okkkaaaaay. I get it — leaves plus wet = slippery. But OH FOR GOODNESS SAKE — fall and leaves on tracks happen EVERY SINGLE YEAR and you didn’t think to ummmm, spend some time cleaning the tracks? I know the leaves will blow back but it seemed like there was no maintenance whatsoever!

Remember to vote tomorrow if you haven’t done so already. I did and will note that I suspect my original ballot was stolen. I received a duplicate after I called the county clerk.

    https://meafragrance.co.nz/taramea/

I am testing Mea Taramea and Herb which is a perfume oil developed by Ngai Tahu ( South Island tribe ) based around the scent of taramea gum , harvested from an incredibly spiky plant that has leaves as sharp as knives ( see the attached photo) , that was highly valued in traditional Maori perfumery. The oil is a blend and I have also tried the Taramea and Woods and there is a note that smells very unfamiliar in both which I guess is the taramea. IT is sweet like honey-dew, or the sugar syrup you might get from stewing apples or making jelly from rose hips….these are the closest comparisons I can think of if you don’t know honey-dew … Or, at a pinch the kind of synthetic honey in JM honey and Crocus. Very long lasting and a bit puzzling as it is so unfamiliar. Lots of Guy Fawkes activity and poor old Gertie was trembling and shaking and I had to wrap her in a blanket to help her feel safe…it seems to help when she is semi-tightly bound.

I will be so glad when the election is over, every commercial break is nothing but ads for candidates and ballot issues. I voted two weeks ago and I am kind of missing the regular local mattress company’s sales pitch. Everything on sale, all the time.

File under Portland weirdness: Last week we had paddleboarding witches on the Willamette River, pointy hats, capes, brooms and all.

I am wearing Une Rose Chypree.

Were they doing yoga? My brother’s house is a Willamette River-front home and you can see them practicing during the season!

Hello? Does no one else realize it is also National Doughnut Day? Amusingly, I’m not a big donut person, other than I prefer as a dessert. Wonder if any of the local shops are doing freebies….

Gourmand Coquin for me today. I did a quick spritz of Ta’if on top on one of my arms. For some reason I keep wanting to pair GC with rose.

I didn’t realize it’s National Doughnut Day but then again, you may not have had a housemate who used to work at Dunkin’ Donuts. By rights, I should have been horrified by what he told us but yet, they are appealing

Sampling West Indies from Hi Wildflower. It is a light woody, soapy scent that seems much lighter than the other ones that I’ve tried from the line.

Lovely weather for Guy Fawkes Night, and am in Fleur de Chine which is not related at all to GF, I should have been wearing something smoky to go with the fireworks and bonfires going on all over the UK.

SOTD is Annick Goutal Vanille Exquise. I needed something truly warm and lovely as ointment against our dreadfully dreary rainy weather. My best “c” fragrance choices right now are Chanel. Not so small. I need to start excavating my collection to see what I can find, but I know I don’t have any of the suggested brands. How is that possible?

I wore Eau des Merveilles today and now my travel size mini is empty ????
I think I need a more if it, even though I already have 30 ml of EdM Bleue…. (But hey that one was for the hot summer days…???? And they ARE quite different)

They are! I prefer EdM Bleue but haven’t tried it in cooler weather yet. Maybe you need a seasonal version of each 😉

This year we had an unusual hot and dry summer in The Netherlands. I bought EdM Bleue, because it reminds me a bit of a dive into cold salty ocean water????
but I crave it less when weather gets colder and ‘oceans’ of rain start to fall down on our heads ????
I think EdM can be worn year round though.

Annick Goutal Ambre Fetiche for me today. I think it’s not cool enough for it yet but I wanted to wear something less SFW because a person who has issues with my perfumes from time to time (not maliciously!) is out of office today.

I’m wearing SL PP today and smell good. My internet is out at home and I spent a delightful period this afternoon chatting with a ComCast representative (Ironic tone there!). Couldn’t help, so they have to send a technician tomorrow. I’m out for a late lunch where they have wi-fi. It’s awful not to have it at home. This morning I reported for jury duty downtown. It was a huge room and filled to the brim. Luckily, my number did not get called and I was released by 12:30, but it was still rather tiring.

I hear you in the inconvenience of not having internet at home. For short bursts, I use my cell phone as a hot spot and that tides me over at least for a little bit.

I’m under the same cold November rain that Robin is. Plenty of indoor tasks to do today. The outdoor tasks, such as taking out the recyclables, can wait until after the rain. ☔????????

SOTD = back in Ungaro Diva today. I always think of Bear when I see the name of the scent. Anyway, it is hitting a figurative sweet spot for me right now, so back on it went. Longevity of this is almost Mugler-esque… I was sniffing the far drydown of it yesterday night before I fell asleep.

I have no idea if the sample I have is vintage or not. It is very definitely a honey-rose chypre. I haven’t seen many negative comments about reformulation on Frangrantica, so the current EdP might still bear a resemblance to the original.

I’m wearing some La Pausa edt from a decant courtesy of a lovely NST’er. Not a small C house..

I’m currently watching American Ninja Warrior Junior. OMG these kids are absolutely amazing! Total respect. Seems that the age groups are from 10 to 14 so far. Umm, what was I doing at that age?? Not THAT!

Has anyone tried carrot seed oil? I was at my local health store on the weekend and put a drop in my hand as I shopped around. I couldn’t stop huffing it; is would be a lovely backdrop to a not-so-iris iris fragrance if you want to amp up the vegetal base or even mixed with some unscented body lotion. Plus it could be a good face moisturizer for night time!

You may want to check with Deva. I could be making this up but she mentioned once that a doctor thought she had a disease that turned skin orange, this after she started using lotion with beta carotene.

Yikes!! I never even thought about that. Thanks, it makes perfect sense however.

I will do a bit more research for the moisturizer aspect of it but the scent of the oil was divine.
