Thursday scent of the day 10/25

Posted by Robin on 25 October 2018 250 Comments

It's Almost-Friday, and happy birthday to Nancy Cartwright! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm running late (again) in Guerlain Spiritueuse Double Vanille.

Reminder: on 10/26, step out of your comfort zone by wearing a perfume that you find challenging. Suggested by lucasai.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I got a sample of L’Aromarine Vanilla with an order not long ago. IIRC, it reminded me of Cologne of the Missions. Cheering you on in your vanilla quest!

Uh oh, I might to write on the board next!

I’m in Gucci Envy ( for women). This one is almost impossible to find these days; I can absolutely imagine distraught ladies buying every bottle they could find. On me it is lovely, but not as strong as I usually like for work.

I’m wearing Mechant Loup, which I like. It is out of my comfort zone in that it has both star anise and licorice, according to Basenotes. Along with vanilla and fig, anise or licorice are among my least favorite notes.

I’m wearing Bois d’Encens (Armani), the fragrance that reconciled me to incense. It took me over a year to decide whether I wanted it or not, but have no regrets at all about my bottle.

Thanks to everyone’s well wishes yesterday. Feeling a lot better, although still sipping tisane.

Right smack in the middle of my comfort zone in Eris Night Flower, a powdery vintage oriental. I’ve been waiting for cool weather to wear it. It’s sunny and beautiful where I am, but chilly.

Recently my Surface 3 bit the dust and I need to replace it. Prior to that I had a Surface 2. They were both frustratingly slow, crashed all the time, and drove me freaking crazy but I love the design – small, uber-lightweight, with a removable keyboard, and perfect for travel.

I’ve talked myself out of buying another Surface product (ish – we’ll see…) but I have no idea what to replace it with. Does anyone have a tablet-sized PC laptop that they love and would recommend? I need something small and lightweight enough that I can throw easily into my purse (said purse being neither small nor lightweight ;) ) but “big” enough to have multiple apps running and a screen of the size that my bifocal-wearing eyes can see.

Lurking on this post because I’m in the market for something similar. Have been using an older macbook but I’m looking to replace it with something smaller and cheaper. Macbooks are more computer than I need and I can’t justify the price.

I had been considering a Surface for the same reasons you mentioned, but you might have changed my mind.

I’ve been holding on to my Surface 3 for dear life; it’s been good to me. I don’t know what I’m gonna do when it bites the dust.

I’m seriously considering heading for a sea change on the desktop front, though – utterly weary of Windows, irritated with Mac expense and micromanagement, I am thinking of moving over to Linux. I simply can’t switch operating systems mid-semester, but it might be manageable over winter break.

      Anybody use Linux?

I use Linux for work but wouldn’t use it for home because the application software simply isn’t there. Really just figure out what programs you want to use and find out if they are available for Linux or not, in order to determine which OS you should use.

I was just in bestbuy last night looking to replace my old and beat up laptop. I bought an off brand (acer) for a good price with excellent independent reviews. I’m embarrassed to say I bought it with the intent of not only work stuff, but also gaming. Like I’m 17 or something ????????‍♀️ Diablo 3 is out and I loved Diablo back in the 90’s and spent many a good hour playing with the fiancé and friends. My brother also got into it, and there are many times I (accidentally) killed him off while trying to save him from creatures. Freud might make something of that ????
As far as light and portable, what about getting just a tablet? Or would that not fit your needs..? I looked at the surface too, but they’re expensive…

I bought a Dell XPS 13 and I adore it. It is very thin and light, works great, costs much less than the Macbook Air (my husband does love his Macbook Air, I just won’t pay that much). I do throw it in my purse, but I carry a big purse.

Its only serious drawback is the webcam — it is located in the lower left, making it virtually useless. I don’t use it anyway so I don’t mind, but if that’s an issue you won’t want a Dell XPS.

Since I bought it, my expensive tablet is pretty much used as a Kindle and nothing else.

(Then again, if you’ve been using a tablet, the Dell might be more than you want to spend. I just waited for a good discount.)

+1 for Dell XPS for the price and size criteria….
although to defend Macs, I have a 6 year old 13” Mac Air which still boots up in 5 seconds. Macs last a loooong time. I never saw a HP or Dell last properly 5 ( either the battery goes to die or they become super sluggish). My HP at work is 3 years old and had more issues than tiny Mac ever did.

My 2 prior Dell laptops had short lives, it is true! I’ve had this one since 2016 and so far it’s fantastic, but of course that is not so very long. I do think the build on the XPS is better than on their budget lines, although it does have a tendency to run hot.

Oh, nice to hear XPS is better.
Otherwise, I think depreciating a Mac over 6 years or a non Mac over 3 , is fairly equal. Just higher cash-out at first. :)
Thinking personal expenses just like I’d think a work one :)

I went through this last year when my Lenovo Yoga died prematurely – lemminged the Dell xps 13, which is really small and lightweight, took a look at Acer, which does come in at a good price point, but ultimately bought a refurbished MacBook – super lightweight, small, and the refurbished one was cheaper than the Dell. My family says they hear way less swearing coming from me now when I sit at my computer. However, if you type a lot, it turns out a small keyboard is not as great as a bigger one (duh) – I hadn’t thought about that.
Aren’t there also some pretty capable Samsung tablets out there? And for price point, perhaps a Chromebook?

I loathe Apple in principle, but in practice, find their products to be WAY better than PCs. I went over to a MBP some five years ago and don’t see how I could ever go back. I have a Thinkpad for work and HATE IT SO MUCH. My 1.5yo Thinkpad is way inferior to my 5yo MBP.

If you could find it in yourself to get an iPad, perhaps with a keyboard case, perhaps the giant version, you might find your needs met.

…and I quit buying Apple products after having been a devoted customer for years and then getting the WORST MAC EVER. Absolute piece of junk, crashed incessantly, and Apple’s response was a shrug. At least it didn’t catch on fire, which happened to my friend’s MacBook. Not to say that Windows PCs are flawless, I’ve had my share of issues there too, but at least when they die they’re cheap to replace.

…and as someone who designs CPUs for a living, I know full well that Apple products and PC products use *exactly* the same chips under the hood. Can’t bring myself to pay double the price for the Apple logo. Nope nope nope.

I let my husband talk me into buying a MacAir after using a PC for 25 years and I loathe it. The only reson I still use it (rarely) is because I paid so much for it and he says it’s less susceptible to viruses. But I will never buy another one.

Good morning all! Breakfast is oatmeal, gussied up with almond butter, TJ’s apple granola and flaky sea salt. Nom nom ????.

Tea is vanilla bean, last tea bag in the box. My tea collection rivals my perfume collection, so it’s a satisfying thunk.

I thunked a bottle of Lavanila Vanilla Lavender last night. Second FB thunk of the year.

I’m in L’air de Rien today, a risky but successful blind buy. It’s all warm, spicy goodness on me, however, I don’t think it would be good for the gym.

I love that Bart pic! The only thing that would make it better would be a bottle of Jicky in his back pocket in place of the slingshot!

L’air de Rien is a top 5 perfume for me. In fact, it may be the only perfume I can definitively say is in my top 5. It’s like walking through a barnyard with your head nestled in the neck of your lover while carrying a stack of old books.

Testing Le Labo’s Patchouli 24. I’d heard this was a leather scent and expected to dislike it, but I’m actually really enjoying the almost camphorous patchouli along with the leather and a sweet note. It’s up there with my other LL favorites (Ylang and Labdanum).

I’m wearing Signorina from Ferragamo, which I have very mixed feelings about.
On one side, it’s too sweet and girly for my tastes. It would have been too girly even when I was 14 :) and it lasts forever on me too!
On the other, it’s the first Christmas present I got from my boyfriend, back when he only knew I liked perfume, and not much more than that. He got it advised by a mall SA. I find it a very sweet memory.

    SOTD is Lonestar Memories.

I was really challenged by this when I first smelled it (ca. 2009, I think), but I stuck with it and grew to love it. I do sort of wonder what people think when they smell it on me, but then again I wear perfume for myself, not others. (Yes, I’m anti-social in that way :) )

Just needed some bulbs, thankfully. So weird because this vehicle is less than 2 years old and every bulb in the back end has had to be replaced (brake and turn signal). I had my FJ for eight years and never had to replace a single thing (other than routine stuff like tires/battery). ????

Yay for simple repairs! Are those bulbs the incandescent type, or LEDs? Some types of incandescent bulbs aren’t very sturdy, which sounds kinda stupid given that they are being used in a moving vehicle.

It’s cold out, but a perfect dry and sunny day Fall day. I’m wearing Cavern NY Atrium perfume oil, which smells like Fall incarnate. Fresh greenish woods, smoky, balsamic goodness, with a hint of orris. Not too sweet or syrupy, which is often what happens with ambery scents on me.
It only lasts about 4-5 hours, which is perfect since I’ll want to switch it up tonight for a show I’m excited about seeing: Ukulele Cabaret (a uke group) performing the entirety of Rocky Horror ???? Should be a hoot!

I’m testing L’Artisan Violaceum from a sample today- thought it might be challenging because I often have trouble with leather notes. However the leather is very soft, more like suede, and the violet is gorgeous. This will probably end up on my FB list- I’ll have to check the discounters because it’s pretty expensive.

Yesterday I decided to wear Embrace by Habibi, a sample that was sent to me by a lovely NST’r during the freebiemeet. I was quite apprehensive about wearing it because it was a “men’s” fragrance, but after looking at a few reviews, mostly on FragranceNet, I chose to step out of my comfort zone and boy, was I pleasantly surprised at this fragrance. It was a beautiful scent that had just the right amount of ‘sweet’ in it to keep it firmly in the unisex territory. One of my co-workers, upon my walking in the door yesterday, immediately asked ‘who smells so nice around here’, and I piped up, ‘Me, that would be me’, with no small amount of pride in my voice, lol. It lasted pretty much thru my whole shift but wasn’t overpowering and I can still detect remnants of it. Well done Habibi!! :D

Smokey, earthy, mushroomy and chestnutty. Love!

Tomorrow’s challenge to find a challenging perfume is challenging ????

    To Chipotle patrons:

Does the order of ingredients placement to you matter?

I got lunch at Chipotle today. I try to limit it to once a week. I always get the rice bowl and the serving line has an order to the ingredients. In my opinion, there’s a reason for the sequence, including dry, wet, layering mouthfeel, and fluffiness (to close the lid AND for the appearance of volume). While my food was being assembled, the next ingredient for me was the mild salsa and it was in the process of being replenished. The server asked if I wanted something else further down the sequence and I said Yes, the corn, but she has to wait until she was able to scoop the salsa in first. OMG, it was as if I asked her to pay me based on the incredulous look she gave me! Anyway, when the salsa came (within 20 seconds), she scooped barely a tablespoon so I had to ask for more (another tablespoon went in) and I asked for more again. She realized I will hold up the line until the quantity was right and finally gave me more than the normal scoop on the third go around.

Hello from Iceland! No scent today, and very tired because we tried (and failed) to see the aurora borealis until 1:30 and then were awoken a few hours later by a godawful squealing in the heaters that continued through morning. I was feeling pretty negatively towards Iceland this morning, but I’ve really had the most splendid day today, involving a calf, a baby horse, stunning earthquake-induced scenery, a splendid geyser, swimming in a hot spring pool, the most beautiful waterfall I’ve EVER seen, and some really amazing ice cream on a farm. Seriously, this ice cream was so rich and creamy and full of flavor. It’s definitely in my top five best ice creams ever. And the cone was probably the best I’ve EVER had. Really! It was like a dessert in and of itself. I need to up my cone game.

I might put on some Camel tonight to warm my toes, which froze as we walked along an icy path barefoot to cool down from the hot spring pool. They still haven’t quite thawed.

That’s a perfectly fair assessment :) that and the smelly hot water (it smells of sulfur because it comes from the naturally heated springs all over the island). I highly recommend a trip if you haven’t been yet!

In patchouli bomb Ylang 49–someone else wore it yesterday which put it on my mind.

Cat lovers, I have a question (NST has some serious overlaps with cat canoodlers): Our old, crotchety, hilarious, very smart cat took a turn for the worse yesterday and we had to euthanize him. It all happened within about six hours. I am doing okay actually–he had a good life and was a ton of fun, but such is life having pets. But my older son is absolutely bereft. Truth be told, the cat was really mostly his in that it slept at my son’s head every night and hung out in his room when he wasn’t outside terrorizing birds and deer (cat not son). My son is 17 and not one for ceremonies or “processing.” Any advice on what I can say or do to cheer him up?

I will definitely miss this one. He would jump up at door knobs and try to turn them with his paws, and meowed a thanks once you opened the door for him. Neighbors are always sending me pics of him in their houses, frequently stretched out on their beds–he really has/had an issue with doors and boundaries!

Ah, one of *those* cats. (I had to change the window fastenings in one house, after Kitsune mastered the two-paws-required window catches and would let himself out for his daily charming-the-neighbours visiting rounds.)

Mourn with him. Tell him you’re sad too. I know it’s awful to not be able to fix it when you see someone you love suffering, but it is a normal, healthy response to losing a creature you loved.

Sorry about your cat. I agree with Elisa P in a kind of allow life to go on and not demand too much in terms of talking through feelings etc…while being there and open to talk. Sometimes a bit of bleak humour helps to release bottled up emotions.

So sorry to hear about your cat! We are currently dealing with a cat in sudden failing health (as if this year hasn’t been bad enough already, chez Pixel). Very sad.

Agree with the others… he’ll have to process it in his own way. I think all you can do is be there when/if he needs you.

I’m not a ceremony kind of person myself, but making a collection of favorite photos helps me. I mean, it makes me weepy, but it is a comfort too.

I’d say to let your son mourn in his own way. There is no rhyme or reason to how that process unfolds, and it takes its own time. Let him know that you are there for him.

There’s a lone bottle of Kelly Caleche EDT on the sale table in town. There is no tester and the shop has stopped stocking Hermes so once it has gone it has gone forever ( the price is cheaper than anything on trademe etc.) i finished a bottle of the EDP a while ago but have never sniffed the EDT….what would Bart do? I like leather and wonder if EDT is too pale?
Gris Clair for morning low cloud and drizzle, cold. Actually, make that Daim Blond ( both blind buys). Time to get up!

So sorry about your cat, but glad he enjoyed a good life.
Well, more from my professional perspective than from my cat-loving perspective, I would just let him be sad-normal grief is a process and everyone expresses it differently and it usually runs its course. Some people like to do things like rituals, writing etc. and some people don’t. I would just give your son lots of love (which I know you do already) and let him know you’re there to talk about it if he wants. I think talking about it yourself out loud, your feelings about it etc, may be helpful also. Sort of role modeling and not avoiding the subject.

You are right. I just feel bad that he is so sad. I think it was the shock in part. The wee mister has been a little thin and arthritic for so long, it was normal for us. My son was used to folks constantly predicting the cat’s imminent expiration–was not actually believing it would happen one day.

First wearing of Rhubarb My Love this morning from a sample set from The Zoo. It’s entirely unlike anything I have ever worn before. You know that iridescent, almost glittered sheen you get on the pink surface of rhubarb stems? It’s that, in a scent. And the mouthwatering acidity. It’s a *sparkly* bright and zingy thing, and put a pep in my step. Who knew?

And now it’s cold and blowy and dark–dark! by 6pm! argh!–and I’m wrapped up in a big scarf and wearing Coromandel and wondering where I put all my fingerless gloves because I’ll be needing those before the week is out…

SOTD- Eris Night Flower- one tiny spritz on the wrist. It is challenging for me and the only skanky perfume I have in my collection. It is addictive though and sometimes I wear it to bed in very small amount:). ENF is often compared to Shalimar on fragrantica- I don’t really get the comparison, as I loathe Shalimar and it smells like dirty socks on me (hello sandalwood!). Big Thanks to a wonderful NSTer who sent me a decant of NIght Flower a whole ago!
PSA: fragrancenet has Guerlain Neroli Outrenoir for $138.59 with 37% off coupon. 2 bottles left. It has been on my to buy list for a while, but I am not buying anything for a while now due to the new baby coming:) Maybe someone will find this info useful.

Two of the cats decided that they would follow the example set by Koyel’s cats today and threw up on the carpet… on two separate floors! Ugh! Seriously??? I thought we had an agreement!

Back in line with the community project again today. SOTD = JM English Oak and Hazelnut Cologne, from the sample stash. It smells like a masculine woody aquatic on me. And aquatic scents are difficult for me to wear as a general rule.

    Commuting Woes No. 607:

A woman behind me kept pushing me as I was boarding the train. I finally shoved back once I was safely inside the car. She had the audacity to say I was squeezing her. Really? How could I squeeze her when I had been in front of her this whole time? So I just said, No, YOU squished me a-hole! It always seems to be small-statured-people who seem to think they are small and thin enough to slip through the cracks between people. They forget that their purses and tote bags take up space too AND some have the mistaken notion that they are slim.
