Tuesday scent of the day 10/23

Posted by Robin on 23 October 2018 211 Comments

It's Tuesday, and it's still October. What fragrance are you wearing?

I have popped out of town for a quick trip, and neglected to bring a single scented thing with me other than Lush Rose Jam. When I get home this afternoon I will put on something lovely and report back.

Reminder: on 10/26, step out of your comfort zone by wearing a perfume that you find challenging. Suggested by lucasai.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Denby Orchard teapot (top left) is around $86.

    Challenging perfume: Jean Patou Joy

Simple bottle but not a simple perfume…. big floral powerful personality. Also wearing Joy lipstick by Laura Mercier. I am having a joyful day…

    SipOTD Lapsang Souchong

Robin, sometimes taking a break from perfume is a good thing.

I love LM lippies, what’s that color like? I find Joy challenging but the older extrait versions seem to wear better on my skin.

Joy is half matte have pearl but highly pigmented fuscia color

Joy perfume is beautiful but in the past when I have worn it I felt like I smell like the inside of a funeral parlor ????

My cheap thrills SOTD is Jessica McClintock (original) I love the cassia, black currant, greens and lily of the valley notes. It’s been a love of mine since the 1980s.
I love the picture of small plates Robin, I love little tchotchkes around the house.

    Wearing Fille en Aiguilles today!
No way this is worthy of this weeks theme. This was love at first sniff for me, and tis a real comfort scent.

For the cp i’d probably wear an aquatic or very fruity scent. Those types of fragrances are out of my comfort zone.

    Hello everyone!

Today I picked the original Nina by Nina Ricci from 1987. I found a very cute mini and, surprise! It’s fantastic. It may be from the 80’s, but it has 50’s bone structure. Slightly creamy floral chypre with a hint of manicured funk in the base. I wish I had an atomizer to pump it up, since it’s a bit quiet on me.

Wearing You, or Someone Like You for the challenge today. First time I tried it, it was horrible: cat pee and b.o.! But then Jada praised it in one of her videos and I gave it a second chance: that time it stayed nicely minty and citrusy. I decided to see which way it’d go today, and it’s behaving nicely, with minty herby politeness.

      I really enjoy that scent!
I do get the mint, and it brings back a memory of my childhood home, where a patch of mint grew by the back gate.
It lasts a surprisingly long time, also.

I am going to Sephora this morning, so no scent for me–I have to keep my skin available for the Perfume Department!

I am wearing Acqua di Parma Magnolia Nobile, while looking out of my window at a beautiful magnolia tree. It is lightly raining here, and the leaves have tiny droplets of water coming down from them.

Also, drinking a cup of Irish breakfast tea.

Hello pleasant smelling people! I just got a very exciting packet of samples from Providence Perfume Co – mostly the perfume oils, which I absolutely love. They’re rich and wafty. Some of them feel very similar to each other but I love them all. Has anyone tried Rose 802 and do you agree with me that it kind of has a hint of artichoke? I didn’t know I’d been wanting an artichoke note until now. Anyway today I’m wearing Orange Blossom & Honey very contentedly.

Also! I’ve been forgetting for weeks to tell you all that I was on the West Wing Weekly podcast a few weeks ago talking about CJ’s perfume. The podcast episode is 5.17 if anybody wants to listen. But to sum it up we’re talking about the previous episode, where in an attempt to be sexy for a date CJ wears a lot of White Shoulders. I said that this would never happen because 1. not sexy and 2. CJ is too on-trend to wear White Shoulders in 2004 (recall that black Vera Wang!). I put her in Coco Mademoiselle – recently released, a classy brand, sexier, and not too far outside the mainstream for CJ to know about – but I would love to hear your ideas too!

Oh that’s so cool re: West Wing! I seem to remember that it was Leo who thought it was White Shoulders–a memory of a piano teacher who wore it but “not so much, not so much”–but CJ didn’t say…

First thought for scenting CJ? Jolie Madame.

Woke up at about 3 am and spritzed on Apres L’Ondee. Very calming. It’s now a cloudy cool morning, so I’ve added a generous perfumed cloud of AL’O to my morning ablutions.

Robin, that photo up top today is outstanding. I want to be in a room that smells as perfect as that image feels to my eyes. Elegant geometry, lovely colors, contemplative mood, all without saying “instagram flat lay” LOL

Hope everyone has a perfume-worthy day.

I thought of Infusion d’Iris because of the soft green colors in common between the photo and the packaging, and the fragrance itself is a match to the feel of the photo too, gentle, self-assured, calm. I’m sure there are other scents that would work too. Have we done a match the scent to the photo project? LOL 😀

Sampling Olfactive Studio Selfie today….I had forgotten how glorious and spicy and cozy and pretty this one smells. Good stuff! Perfect for a chilly fall day….

Smelly Instagram…I am doing an 8 day “Ocho for October” series, to do quick mini reviews on favorite fall scents. Come find me and tell me your favorite cooler weather smellies in the comments!

I called into work sick today. I’m feeling a little bad about it, but I know I need the rest. I dabbed on a little Tuscan Leather last time I got up. I look and feel awful, but smell wonderful.

I just drank the last of the green tea. I still have some tumeric tea, that I will drink. Honestly though, it tastes awful. This has been a particularly bad health year for me, as far as germs and viruses go. Now that you mention it, it doesn’t coincide with me working at this job.

My son is reading Behemoth and waiting anxiously for the nurse to insert his iv. I may treat myself w a Guerlain parfum when this is over!

In Au Dela Narcisse today. I’d been eking out a large sample and decided to buy a bottle just as it went completely out of stock, with months to go until a new batch was ready. And then the occasional serendipity of a certain auction site came to the rescue. It’s not like I’d been checking every week or anything. Ahem.

I am a frequent spender..I mean shopper at The Strand.

It’s a family business and the owner passed away and I believe his daughter now has taken over. I have seen her in person at book events and she is lovely.
Now that I have 2 kids its a little tricky spending as much time as I use to there, but I still frequent that store. For me, my books are a circle of life: I am too pressed for space to keep everything I buy so I donate them to the library( or a friend) and then I also utilize the library and sometimes when I want to re-read books I have read I wonder if the book in my hand is the one I donated…

In the next few weeks I will get down there so I will make sure I will report back about the candles.

Awesome, I’m very interested to see what you find out. I considerate on the space issue with books. I find kindle to be a good way to store quicker reads and books I’ll probably only read once. Also here I OKC we have several Halfprice Books stores. You can trade in old books for cash, it’s less than store credit elsewhere but more useful. And they will take anything you bring in! Even beat up items, such as kids books, that they can’t sell and donate them to places, like doctors offices. So it’s a two for one trip. ????

Hey there, dear friends! Today was my second and last full day in Stockholm. I accidentally ended up wearing a challenging fragrance. I brought my new sample of BF Vetiverissimo on this trip, thinking it would be a no-brainer, but once the great vetiver faded away, it turned into a slightly stomach-churning musk (think Glossier You). I need to try it a couple more times to see what is going on there, but this might be yet another BF scent that I don’t need to buy.

I forgot to mention that the hotel toiletries are by the Perfumer’s Story by Aziz. The scent is called Character No. 1. I’ve never heard of this line before, but I quite like the scent of the products; CN1 appears to be an exclusive for this hotel. It’s like a masculine citrus leather incense. Really nice, though the body milk is TRASH and makes my skin dry in about two minutes. At least the infuser in the bathroom smells great.

    SOTD = Serge Lutens Chergui

This was initially challenging when I barely wore 2 sprays – it was all big sprayish. Fast forward one of the earliest Splitmeets and I decided to go for a decant (I think I ended up with 2 due to an odd split). In any case, more is more. Today, I am happily wearing 6 sprays. I lump Chergui, Mitzah and Coromandel together from the standpoint that they are all incensey, honeyed, has a spicy resinous feel and all are great for Fall.

Question: I am looking for lightly scented dryer sheets. Liquid to be added to the wash is not an option since my wash is commingled with others’. I smelled the Mrs. Meyers dryer sheets (Lavender and another one with verbena), but both were overwhelmingly strong. Price is no object. Alternatively, instructions on how to make homemade dryer sheets that you have successfully tried would be most welcome as well.

    Commuting Woes:

A track was taken out of service for who knows how long for repairs. The passengers that normally use that track now use the remaining ones for the other lines. Yesterday, the platform for my train was inundated with masses of extra people for the other train line and it finally cleared so much that I could spit ten feet along the platform and not hit anyone. AnywY, as the platform filled up and a train approached, oozing mass of people surged to the train doors and got mostly settled except for a buch or lost people who GOT ON THE WRONG TRAIN – because 1) they were used to only having their train line exclusively using the track. 2) signage and announcements for the trains were not prominent. 3) they THOUGHT their train was early so they boarded (hmmm, they looked like seasoned commuters but looks are deceiving…). Anyway, it looks like I need to get used to more crowding on the platform (in addition to the overcrowded trains) and I’m afraid that at some point, the platform may collapse from the sheer number of people!

Tomorrow’s perfume will not be challenging. Instead, I will wear my spine strengthening No.19 EDP for a very challenging (but good challenging) Wednesday!

I didn’t buy them, my husband did, but apparently indefinitely? They’re not treated with anything that disappears after use. He got them to be a little “greener” except we have forgotten to bring them to the laundromat and had to buy dryer sheets anyway a few times, lol. Not sure how they compare to dryer sheets, though. I don’t pay that much attention.

No ideas for your fabric softener query. I actually had problems in the past with dryer sheets, so I switched to liquid fabric softener ages ago.

And “BOO HISS” on your track issues. Track repairs are the pits to deal with!

We used to use liquid softener but it ended up gunking the reservoir.

As to track repairs, one set of stairs (there are two altogether) to get to the parking lot had been under rehabilitation since early summer. It takes 4x longer to get to the parking lot if you don’t sit within 2 train cars. of the lone staircase so if course, those cars are the most crowded. I have learned a technique to weave through the crowds faster — go to the outside perimeter of the crowd on cut through, slanting towards the left to get to the inside edge of the staircase. The inside had a tighter loop and I can use it the banisters to steady myself. It’s a science!

I’ve been vigorously shaking up my liquid fabric softener every time I use it. Seems to keep the goop away. My problem with the dryer sheets was that I ended up getting a rash from them. No bueno!

No dryer ideas, alas. I stopped using anything in the dryer when I really paid attention to the price of dryer sheets. Redonkulous! I’m ok with a bit of static cling for free ???? Someone I know washes their clothes with new tennis balls, and then chucks the lot into the dryer. Supposedly, the tennis balls prevent wrinkling, but not sure what they do for softening and static cling…

Hello All, nice to meet you! I’m a longtime lurker and it’s nice to find a group who don’t think you’re weird for having such a hobby/obsession.

I have just put on a dab of Vanille Tonka for the community project. I was so sure I would love this when I decided to get a sample, but a full day’s wear put me off of going anywhere near it for weeks. I think it’s the combination of basil and cinnamon that doesn’t work for me here – individually I like them (in fact, I love basil), but this was too overpowering.

I am also guilty of ordering a batch of samples out of disappointment with my weekend trip. I looked up a store in Vienna where they sell niche fragrances and I hoped to get samples there, thereby saving the shipping cost, only to be told that the samples are only available via the online store. So I caved and ordered them online, but I had to stop myself from ordering a Petit Fours set from the Ormonde Jayne website as well, which I have also been planning to do for a while, because I can’t really afford any of this.

SOTD is Paestum Rose. Goes nicely with the milder day we’re having.

Re-sampling Guerlain Jicky today. These grand dames of perfumery are challenging for me. Though the modern versions are less scary than the vintages. Got the EdT on the left hand, and Parfum on the right. I find the EdT more to my liking (good for the wallet, eh) though it sure doesn’t last.

I’m a long-time fan of Guerlain but Jicky is a challenge for me too.

Me too. I grew into Jicky pretty quickly, but I think I will never grow into Mitsouko.

I tried to love Jicky, but couldn’t. I respect and admire it, though. I swapped my bottle away, and now it has a better home.

Inadvertently participating in the project today by sampling Abominally Adorable from Wilde Ivy. It’s a toasted marshmallow scent but it was so strong and sneezingly synthetic that I had to wash with a few different soaps so that it would be less difficult. Sometimes I get bored and try random sellers off etsy…..

My SOTD is Jungle L’Elephant mainly because it’s been mentioned several times here and it’s made me crave it. It’s a cool dreary day here so it’s a good day for it. I would have definitely found this challenging a year or two ago, but I love it now!

Bois d’Hadrien today. Trying to use up the decant. Still thinking about the Community project….maybe Mitsouko, as i find the Peach note challenging.

Sadly, it’s pretty much gone at this point in the day but the morning was extra lovely wearing this beauty.

It’s a gorgeous sunny day here, and my “To Do” list is down to 3 items! Whoo hoo! ????????

SOTD = Sonoma Scent Studio Nostalgie EdP. I blind bought the travel spray when Laurie was having her clearance sale earlier this year. I honestly had no idea what it was going to smell like. Well, this blind buy turned out beautifully! Not a challenging scent for me, but since it is loaded with lots of sparkly aldehydes on top, I can see how some people would consider it so.

Glad you had a sunny day. We had another dreary day and heavy rain. It is finally clearing now, as the sun is going down. At least I’ll get an hour of sunlight before dark.
      Nostalgie is beautiful.

I hope that you have sunny skies soon Petunia! There’s the chance for a big Nor’Easter out here this weekend, so I am enjoying every iota of sun that I can.

I’m glad that I tried Nostalgie now… this is the perfect time of year for it.

I was in the mood for an odd, unconventional perfume today. It was almost going to put on Fruitchouli Flash and then saw the L’air de Rien. Kind of over sprayed it and got some funny looks from people in town. It really does smell like dandruff scalp, sweaty sheets and hippy leather stuff that belonged to a smoker from the thrift store. Oh well, I that’s one I really love anyway.

Trying to get my decanting done today. I was slowed due to a mishap with the instant pot mini…made chicken and dumplings, and it SPEWED big time when I released the pressure. I had no idea there were so many little crevices and tight spots for chicken goop to work it’s way into, and it all had to be cleaned. Some areas needed a Q tip.
I was in Fico di Amalfi this morning, and Cuir de Lancôme after lunch. Decided I’d had enough challenge for the day. Relaxing with a cuppa, chamomile & spearmint, thanks to the lovely PL67. I hope things are okay with you, M.!
