Tuesday scent of the day 10/16

Posted by Robin on 16 October 2018 273 Comments

It's Tuesday and it's World Food Day, and Oscar Wilde's birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm having my second cup of tea (boring old English Breakfast) in a dab of Sarah Jessica Parker Stash SJP.

Reminder: on 10/19, for Family History Month, wear a fragrance that someone in your family wore, or that reminds you of someone in your family, or that reflects your family history in some way.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is Wilson family and friends at "Claremont" in Ipswich, Queensland - 1910 [cropped] by Aussie~mobs at flickr; public domain.

Love the photo Robin… That one reminds me of pictures in my mom‘s album from around the same time – but on the other side of the world in Philadelphia.

    Sotd Samsara

Still feeling that retail pull, and trying to resist!

Have any of you made your own perfumed shower gel? Can you recommend a neutral shower gel base? I’ve made scented body lotion with success, using neutral base and letting it marinate – I think it would help me resist the retail pull if I could come up with perfumed trios ( perfume, shower gel, body lotion) to replicate all of the gift sets I’m not buying ????

No, I gave in to Samsara last month (even though I am on a self-imposed no buy)

Just feeling that general fall/pre-Christmas retail frenzy

Also, maybe you could try to buy Xmas presents early, some scented, and hopefully it would take the edge of the retail pull? I may follow my advice myself :)

My guess is Dr Bronners unscented Castile liquid would be a good base. I was Thinking of doing that too.

I’ve been making my own shower gel and hand soap and I use Dr Bronners Castile soap. I mix it with water, jojoba oil and essential oils. The results are great. Make sure to use distilled water as the shelf life is longer, around one to two months.

Wearing sample of Tom Ford Noir Pour Femme. Unlabeled, so I thought it was something else. Oh well!

I don’t find English Breakfast boring, Robin. Not exotic, I guess, but tasty and soothing. Good for Monday’s ugly little sister!

SotD = Alahine, for the first time :D

Wowza, this is a beauty! I put a few dabs on the back of my hand and feel certain I will waft all day long.

If you like roses with some oomph, and dare I say va-va-va-voom, this is perfect, sumptuous really. It also makes me think “old school” perfume, so it’s a nice fit for this week’s hearkening back to olden days.

Many many many many thank yous to the lovely NSTer who graced my mail box with a scented samples parcel yesterday. I’m verklempt. ;)

OH! and this morning I finished reading Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe. The ending made my cry. Twice. Written as YA fiction, it is tendre honest sweet and compelling. Read it with an open heart and mind. You’ll be glad you did.

You smell fabulous, tiffanie! So interesting that you get roses from it – I don’t at all. I get amber and florals, but there’s no way I could suss out one flower over another in it.

Lucky, I guess? because the roses are very pretty. And well-blended with the ylang, to me that’s the va-voom, and the other notes too

Wearing Derring-Do from Ineke in honour of my Grandparents who packed up their lives and their children and sailed from Ireland to land in PEI. That took a lot of Derring Do
The scent itself started off as a soft, pretty citrus floral, but has quickly degenerated into a ho-hum semi-floral freshie.

I like it very much but I do not need it, even at half price. Probably. I think. I do really want to try Autumn and Winter, since I love Summer and like Spring a lot.

Out of town for a quick visit with my maternal grandmother, or “granny” as we all call her. Spent the day on the road yesterday and showed up at her nursing home as a complete surprise. She was so happy and surprised to see me, it made me a bit teary. I don’t see her nearly as often as I’d like. Miles and life have gotten in the way. Our bond is deep though. She was just 41 when I was born, the first grandchild, and we spent lots! of time together when I was a tyke. Her short term memory is not what it used to be, and in a few months she may not remember that I came to visit. So I will take pictures, and I will do the remembering for both of us.☺️

SotD is Eau Premiere. Classic and beautiful, just like my Granny.

Oh, Oscar Wilde. Not going to lie, I had the hots for him as a youth. His sexual orientation was, I’d venture, less of a barrier for me than the fact that he’s been dead a long time.

Today is Day Two of Project: Jet Lag, and accordingly, I woke up at 6:15, 45 min before my usual wake-up time. That was hard. I don’t even want to think about how hard tomorrow’s 5:30 wake-up time will be, or worse, Thursday’s 4:45 >.< I know many of you wake up early regularly, but ugh, time before 7 is just awful.

I smell absolutely gorgeous in Passage d'Enfer. A number of people discussed PdE yesterday, both positively and negatively, and it just reminded me that I hadn't worn it in weeks. So I had to fix that asap.

Hehe I used to feel the same way about mornings, but my wake up time has gradually gotten earlier. It’s crazy to me that I can feel basically ok after waking up at 5:45 every weekday. Weekends I do sleep in though, usually until 8-9.

There is a nice biography on Oscar Wilde by H Montgomery Hyde in the Penguin Classic series. My absolute favourite in the same vein is “Gertrude and Alice” about Gertrude Stein and Alice Toklas. That was such a cozy and odd little biography – I felt as though they could have been my own eccentric great-aunts. The biographer obviously felt great affection for her subjects. The Oscar biography is a bit more objective and cerebral, but in all fairness Wilde wasn’t a completely likeable character.

I think his terrible end makes us forgive his weaknesses, such a touching case of sic transit gloria mundi. Many thanks for the info about the biography.

I guess I didn’t realize he was unlikeable? I was in love with him for his wit and his tragic end. I guess I didn’t know much about the in between.

When I was in 9th grade, my boyfriend looked EXACTLY like a young Oscar Wilde. If you ever run into a 42 year old man named Jess who grew up in Calgary, know that a) he is a wonderful person and b) he really truly looks like Oscar Wilde.

Obviously, this confused me for a long time after 9th grade.

PSA, those red Chanel bottles are available on their website NOW. I ordered mine yesterday! It is due to arrive on Friday! I will have a long chat with Donatella next quarter, that’s for sure. The holiday ‘opportunities’ are destroying what little willpower I ever had.

Continuing working thru my 7 Virtues sampler today. No winners so far, but I can tell you for sure that Vanilla Woods is Vanilla Cedar, ’cause the vial was broken in the box when I received my order, and the whole box — and now the whole bathroom — smells of Vanilla Cedar :)

Oh, hajusuuri, thanks for posting the link to the hilarious cat photobomb over the weekend. I forwarded it to a friend who is sitting at her dying father’s bedside, and it made her smile, which she sorely needed.

I can’t wear No 5 itself since that is my MIL’s signature scent. Even though I like it, it feels like wearing her clothes.

Just finished my Friday and very happy to be heading into a 4 day weekend????

In celebration, I wore BoE last night and this morning, there is a lovely lingering residual.

Finally streamed the new Dr Who and I thoroughly enjoyed it! Didn’t think anyone could top the Tom Baker Dr Who version that I grew up with, but the newest iteration seems like it may be the best since Baker. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

And, nothing to do with perfume, but I’m working with a great group of young nurses who are being pushed into roles they are not comfortable with. Most have been RN’s less than a year and they are saddled with charge nurse duties, not to mention very complex and sick patients on a cardiac specialty unit. About half are already looking for a way out, but feel trapped by student loans, single motherhood situations, etc. It’s very sad and disheartening to see that they get no support from management either. I’m glad I’m near the end and nowhere near the beginning of my career. They’re a great group of young adults and I love working with them because we always find a way to have some good belly laughs during our shift.

It’s funny, my grandmother never wore perfume that I remember but always had body powders. I remember when I was little and I’d bathe at her house I’d always pull out those large powder puffs and dust myself and I thought I was super fancy. My aunt still uses a No. 5 body powder with her L’eau.

In Vanilla Flash for a very cold day – I had to get out my down jacket, which made my heart sink. At least it’s sunny!

The Delacourte musk sampler set I first ordered got lost or stolen, so the company very nicely sent me a free replacement. I must say I don’t like the scents in this sampler at all. The vanilla ones, on the other hand, I have been wearing regularly to bed every night and having the best sleep ever! In fact, I didn’t wear one last night and tossed and turned for a few hours.

This is all scary to me to read because I’m thinking of moving back to Michigan after 32+ years in Texas, and I probably haven’t got a realistic idea of winter. Nor do I have any winter things any more–boots, hats, coats. I just know I hate the six- or eight-months-long summers here in Houston.

My $50 down jacket from Costco has served me well for the past 4 years. It’s light as a feather (!), machine washable and dryable. It is very warm and I use layers to preserve heat. Gloves are important as well…nothing worse than cold hands as that makes your body feel colder than it really is.

I put Angel on last night, after my workout and shower. I went out to dinner with my parents, and I LOVED the way I smelled.

This morning, I put Angel on again, and it is a “like”, not a “love”. Maybe it was cooler last night, and the heat of today is making it smell different. Not sure.

I am not giving up on Angel. The smell last night was incredible when I wore it.

I’m wearing En Passant today. Yesterday I made the worst loaves of bread ever! It was a recipe I found on a blogger site and the reviews were stellar. Mine was dense, doughy, and way too sweet (and some reviewers suggested adding more honey.) The birds won’t even eat it and I don’t blame them. I might go to the boulangerie today to console myself.

Do you have a bread maker, or were you doing everything by hand? Mr. Jalapeno and I made a few decent loaves with our breadmaker before it went kaput, but we never had any luck doing things by hand. ????

I did it by hand. When I had a breadmaker, the bread usually came out well, but when I downsized the breadmaker went to a friend’s house.

Same for me. I use the bread maker on the dough cycle only, then finish by hand. I find doing it all by hand never gives me a good result, and I don’t care for the texture/flavour of the bread recipes I’ve tried for baking in the machine.

Late on this thread, but maybe you’ll read? I used to bake a lot of bread (sadly not any more) and used the no-knead Jim Lahey recipe, giving it a quick mix in an empty ice cream tub and then leaving it overnight in the fridge. You can bake it at any time the next day. Just remember to bake it in the pre-heated cast iron pot as per recipe directions. It really worked every time. And if you don’t wash your tub in between batches of dough, the small amount of dough stuck to the sides gets mixed into your new batch and the flavour just gets better and better ;).

Cool photo. I just read up on Claremont and Ipswich european setllement: it was a penal colony and the second owner of Ckaremont was the ‘father’ of Ioswich, the first free-man to settle in the town, who later got into politics when NSW and Queensland split. ( the guy who built the house down-sized due to lack of money). He was a very wealthy man, staged fox hunting etc. from the house. The Wilsons were a medical family, super-intendent at the hospital dealing with outbreaks of diptheria and flu around 1915. Later the house was turned into a hostel for what seems to be termed ‘sub-normal’ residents and later still it fell apart until becoming recognised as a heritage building.
Big wind here and bit stormy. I am wearing Lakeland Flora which I really like…very NZ smelling.

This is a book about the sandalwood trade written in 1862 you might like. TROVE has all sorts of articles about the early australian sandalwood trade and growing – sandalwood from NW Australia was ranked as highly as mysore sandalwood by the British pharmacopeia (the only sandalwood other than Mysore to make the grade..used to treat veneral diesease and for perfume)

Wearing Divin Infant – no family connection but it’s one of my fall favorites.

Slightly long tale that ends with a question about orange blossom/neroli: I’ve worn 4711 for several years, and a few months ago I decided to try the 4711 shower gel. I didn’t love it – it smelled fairly different from the cologne and had an off-note that reminded me of cigarette smoke/ash. After trying it a few times, I also started to detect this “cigarette” note in the cologne as well, which put me off it a bit. Which leads me to today: I’m always surprised by other people’s descriptions of Divin Infant (basically, a soft and marshmallow-y neroli scent) because I get such a strong tobacco note in it. So this morning it occurred to me that some iterations of orange blossom/neroli smell like tobacco to me? Anyone else experience this?

Robin, I’m a bit behind, and you might have already noted this. While looking for something else, I found this September 23, 2018, article “Symrise Continues Its World Tour Through Scent and Welcomes Master Perfumer Annick Ménardo”:

“…Ricardo Omori, VP – Fine Fragrance at Symrise, announced that he is strengthening his Fine Fragrance team with the arrival of three young talents coming directly from the Symrise Perfumery School: Leslie Gauthier, Marine Ipert and Suzy Le Helley.

“Additionally, Omori announced the highly anticipated arrival of Master Perfumer Annick Ménardo. A talented scent designer who has marked the contemporary history of perfumery with iconic creations such as Lolita Lempicka, Dior Bois d’Argent, Dior Hypnotic Poison, Boss Bottled, YSL Body Kouros, and Bulgari Black.

“Omori also announced the new exclusive Symrise partnership with Payan Bertrand, the famous producer of raw materials from Grasse, to expand his range of exceptional natural ingredients.”

    https://www.thebeautyinfluencers.com/2018/09/23/symrise-continues-its-world-tour-through-scent-and-welcomes-master-perfumer-annick-menardo/

Annick Ménardo had previously worked at Firmenich since 1991. I wonder if this is a promotion for her, and whether this will lead to some interesting perfumes by Symrise. Symrise has very little publicity about Fine Fragrance on their website compared with Firmenich. That “World Tour Through Scent” collaboraton with Nez looks interesting.

My only celebrity sighting was many years ago way back when they were married and lovey dovey – Alec Baldwin and Kim Bassinger. Kim was so pretty and her skin was luminous and she had a glow about her. OTOH, Alec looked like he had not shaven in days and it was not a “groomed” unshaven look. It was at a diner on Madison Ave. and 70 something street.

Hi everyone, I’m back home from my trip to Toronto! Didn’t get in any perfume shopping or visits there due to being so busy at my conference. Did go to some very good restaurants with great food and the Art Gallery of Ontario. I can note for the record that the Royal York Fairmont, a really nice hotel, has all Le Labo Rose 31 in their bathrooms, and they’re pretty nice. My roommate and I shared the extras–she took home the shampoo and conditioner, and I got the shower gel and body lotion. Not a bad deal! Unfortunately we used the two soaps and they didn’t bring any extras, but those were nice too.

Interesting. My friend, who is not at all into scents, said she was initially rather skeptical because she doesn’t like the smell of rose, but she found she actually liked this. As with many of the other LL’s, the title isn’t that indicative of the actual fragrance, which is pretty subtle and nice.

Wearing Replica Jazz Club today, such a fine fall scent. I’m going to visit my best friend, several hours away, tomorrow. I miss her, it’s been too long since we’ve seen each other; since my sister is here taking care of our mom I can get away. Unfortunately, my sweet friend has terrible asthma that is most often triggered by fragrance so I keep usage to a minimum. She has a new puppy that I’ll get to play with so I will happily be fragrance free for a few days. Have a great weekend, everyone!

TDC Jasmin de Nuit because it reminds me of a perfume my paternal grandma wore. I’ll wear another that reminds me of her even more one day this week. I don’t know what perfume she wore but it was undoubtedly something Avon.

    SOTD = Tauer Dark Passage

Perfectly honeyed tobacco and earthy patchouli. I may have cornered the market with 4 travel sprays and I want more! If you have one lurking in the depths of your “pile” and you don’t intend to wear it, let’s talk swap!

    Commuting Woes No. 604:

NJ Transit had MONTHS to figure out a reduced train schedule so that they can further manipulate their on-time metrics. There’s a train that kept getting cancelled at least 3x a week over the summer. They opted to keep this on the new schedule. One would think they selected the 18 cancelled trains based on facts (ridership?) and whichever train they chose to keep should operate. Nope, think again. This morning, THAT train got cancelled (yesterday, it was initially cancelled, was revived but 15 minutes late. 2 days into the new schedule, NJT is 0 for 2 in terms of on-time performance. Ugh again!

Geez, it sounds like NJT is taking hints from SEPTA on how to run trains!

I almost want to throw the 10% back at NJT — I just want them to do a good job. In the end, we will end up paying more because – Look Ma, big improvements and we spent billions to give you, our most important customers, a safer ride. 25% increase!

Busy, worrisome day today. My son got lost downtown riding the bus again. He’s home and fine. I’m still worrying, going to make some calls tomorrow about it. Anyway, let my daughter pick out our shared sotd and she picked Alien essence absolute. We both smelled fabulous, but I think I gave the guy at the bank a sneezing fit.

Dzongka! It was a take no prisoners kind of day, which means Dzongka because it brings mental clarity. Or as my co-teacher observed “It brings the Tibetan Whoop-Ass!”

Love you all. It’s been very trying lately, but you are all pillars of wit, kindness, and beautiful scents.
