Thursday scent of the day 10/11

Posted by Robin on 11 October 2018 268 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday and happy World Sight Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

Me: Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Les Fruits Défendus, Volume 1: Eau Cerise for Valiant Poppy.

Reminder: on 10/12, wear a fragrance that evokes one of Pantone's colors for Fall 2018.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Love that picture of poppy!

I am in Fendi Theorema for Russet Orange.
I still do not understand why Fendi discontinued it – it does not smell dated at all to me.

There main reason companies discontinue scents is that they have sales projections that must be met, and a change in management or just revised financial expectations can lead to a purge. Fendi deleted literally their entire catalogue in 2009 (goodbye Theorema, farewell Life Essence, so long Palazzo), opting for a fresh start with Fan di Fendi, and then started rebuilding the line: they were up to ten in 2015, with three flankers of Fan di Fendi, the men’s version and two flankers of that, and Acquarossa plus another two flankers — and then they scrapped the whole line again, citing poor sales.

But you’re right, Theorema is timeless. You’d think they could sell that forever. Great packaging, great bottle, incomparable scent. I have a couple of mL left in a mini and I’m hoarding it.

Thanks, pyramus. Yes, it makes sense. However, a lot of people miss Theorema, so Fendi could at least try to revive it as a limited edition and see how it sells now.

An added wrinkle…another reason they discontinued everything in 2006 was that the license passed to LVMH. But by then, I am pretty sure Theorema was either already axed, or was only sold in Italy.

Palazzo was actually the first LVMH launch, and it didn’t do well.

I adore Theorema, it’s sad that Fendi deleted all the scents in their catalogue when LVMH (a.k.a., the evil empire) took over.
I’m at the tail end of my vintage bottle of Life Essence, that’s one I don’t hear much about. It’s kind of an under the radar beauty in my book.

I have not tried Life Essence, but according to Fragrantica, it has some of my favorite notes: sandalwod, cypress, lemon. Sounds nice. I hope you will find a back-up bottle.
Somehow Fendi is an under the radar perfume house for me. If Robin had not kept wearing and admiring Theorema here, I would have probably never tried it.

And I get what you are saying about ‘discontinued love avoided’ – I always feel sad when I find a new scent I love and then find out it’s discontinued.

It’s Kyoto today, and I think it matches crocus petal pretty well. Crocuses (croci?) sometimes emerge right through frost or snow, and for me there is something a little chilly about Kyoto … in a good way.

Does it?!? It is funny how differently we all see fragrance/colors — so my surprise is not to indicate that you’re crazy or wrong, just that yes, we see it so differently. To me, Kyoto is brown and green — the closest in that mix would be Martini Olive but it’s not quite right.

I’m in Anjouan by Indices Parfums, a dark, smoky unisex ylang-ylang scent: if I had to pick one of the Pantone colours to match it, you’d think it would be Limelight (because ylang flowers are a bright banana yellow), but I’d choose Red Pear because this scent is SO dark and mysterious. It’s just heaven.

Today’s SOTD is Shiseido’s Murasaki, I’d say it represents Crocus Petal perfectly, with it’s notes of hyacinth, peony, orris root, chrysanthemums, gardenia and lily. It’s one of my favorite perfumes from the 1980’s.

That was my mom’s signature scent! I wish I could smell it again. I remember it wafting off her coat and scarf. It smelled really different and exotic to me in the 80s. You’re lucky to have it, I know it’s really hard to find. Many years ago, when she was first diagnosed with cancer, I tracked down a bottle of it on eBay and spent a ridiculous amount of money on it, so I could give it to her again.

I’m wearing Iris Ukiyoe this morning. I have one of those long thin tube samples of it, and I keep kicking myself that I didn’t buy a travel spray when I bought my Hermessence set. Oh well, next time.

My thoughts are with everyone in Florida – we’re having tons of rain from Hurricane Michael here in South Carolina, so I can only imagine how bad it was on the coast.

In my second day of trying Byredo’s Elevnth Hour. Yesterday was quite warm, and while I liked this quite a bit it disappeared within an hour. I wonder if that is where the name comes from. Hopefully will be better on a chilly day.

I love the shades for fall. So many of these are appearing in eye shadow palettes and fashion runways.

    SipOTD Lapsang Souchong

Thanks for all your well wishes for Mr L. He is still recovering but getting better everyday.

When I have some time for myself (which is only been in the evenings) I am knee deep into Ondaatje’s Warlight book. He is such an exquisite writer. Very poetic and illuminating. I am hoping one day he will come to NYC and give a talk. These days between taking care of Mr L and the kiddos its been Coco perfume everyday and escaping into this book when every evening. I am embarrassed to say I picked it up on Monday and I am sure I will finish it by the weekend. Straight up bookworm.

    Have a fragrant day everyone..

I recently used to live in the same neighbourhood as Mr. O in Toronto and would see him once in a while at our local pub having a meal. I would always think to myself “that is the person who wrote The English Patient… right over there… having dinner!!!” Oddly enough when I was in New York in the fall of 1995 I was walking up Central Park West and who was coming down the street towards me but Ralph Fiennes. Figured he must’ve been there promoting Strange Days as that film was just released at that time.

Had a quick coffee with a friend after swimming (only a km but two days in a row, which is good for me) and had spritzed from a sample I had in my gym bag, Escentric 03. She said that I smelled nice and expensive, not like drug store dreck! I was quite surprised as she never expressed any interest in perfume before. She just laughed and said that she “had a good nose”. Needless to say, the sample now lives with her. She’ll enjoy it!

oh, do keep trying! I have mostly weaned myself off store-bought deodorant. It takes time to find what works best. I like coconut oil. A few friends have gone all in and had their underarms lasered to stop all hair growth. That really cuts down on the need for any deodorant. I’m tempted to do it myself, but it takes time and $!

SotM = MEM = Pantone Ultraviolet

I have a bit of laryngitis and stuffiness, feels like it will subside quickly if I rest today. Only thing on my agenda is an annual eye exam, so that’s nicely fortuitous timing.

With this cold/flu/whatever going on MEM smells different, a little more bitter, less floral, a little medicinal. I’m enjoying it very much.

I really like all the fall colors Pantone chose. I tend to choose colors in the purple-blue-green spectrum but the brown-yellow-orange-red colors are greatly appealing to me. Maybe my color sense is ready for a big shift. I did buy a few red shirts recently, and that’s not like me at all.

    Have a loverly day, NSTers.

I love the color of poppies!

I’m in Black Cashmere and maybe this could be a Ceylon Yellow?

Imagine the world with no color? Nope, can’t. Color brings health to my soul..

I’m wearing a tiny spray of Oud Bouquet today. Over some BBW almond blossom lotion. I can’t smell the lotion at all since Oud Bouquet devoured it. Cm8, I would bet this would even over power your scent eating skin!

In Baiser de Russie–from a decant swap. I hope I was generous. This is a mongo-sized decant!

Still struggling a bit with the caramel in this one. I have a hard time with cookie gourmands–vanilla, chocolate, butter, cream, caramel, pudding. . .

But this scent is growing on me. If I had to give it a color, it would be Mui Mui sky blue. An electric pastel. Choosing from the offerings, I will go with Limelight.

I’ve been more MIA than usual, but just realized I have seen comments from Waterdragon or Kanuka in a while. Hope they are both well!!!!

Hi there! I’m just leaving a short-term artist/writers residency in the middle, west-coast of the North Island. My little apartment had no wifi, no radio and no TV and was on a main road with constant road traffic and a view of a fence so it was been good for writing (hit 80 000 words at last) but I started talking to myself as it was a bit stir-crazy quiet. The worst thing was I had to eat the crusts of my toast each morning as there were no begging dogs around the table. Really interesting trees and plants compared to the south – lots of ferns, native honeysuckle and a tree called kawakawa used in Maori Rongoa (healing/medicine) that has leaves that smell like peppered baked potato. Heading home tomorrow where there has been snow on the hills but will have a few hours in Wellington and stay with a friend. Dark Horse and Rue Cambon have been my only perfumes due to poor planning!

Haha! So good to hear from you, and better still that the worst thing you’ve been coping with is bread crusts (as a crust eater myself, I am not terribly impressed with your plight–the view of the fence, however, leaves me mildly depressed . . .) I’ll be thinking of your peppered baked-potato leaves and snow on the hills, and your wearing Rue Cambon watching the traffic (which in my mind is stirring up dust, which is probably rooted in some unexamined stereotype of islands, writers’ residencies, no radio, and bread crusts) pass.

Iris Silver Mist for Ultraviolet today. My husband found out he has a hernia and we have an appointment next week with a surgeon. It’s always something at our house! Still don’t have the repairs done for our water damage, but I guess fate is keeping us on our toes. Now I need to research hernia repair. All I know is being scared by all the commercials/signs for hernia mesh lawsuits.

SOTD Sugandhco Jashn-e-ouhd perfume oil. I don’t have experience with oud, so hard to compare this to other oud scents, but I like it – it’s very strong, very sweet, very woodsy.

Then, I went to CVS and sprayed 1x Jovan Musk on my arm, they actually do smell good together.

I have been obsessed with Shower Gel & Body Wash research over the past couple of days. It must be a stress relief/Christmas marketing but it is getting ridiculous – if I put a pricetag on my time, it would be better to go bananas and buy all of it and move on with my life. So, I broke my “no-buy” and got Crabtree Rosewater wash from Marshals and Burts Bees Citrus Ginger body wash from CVS. I hope that stems the tide for a while.

and…I have never been into body wash in my life until I got into perfume last year, I thought it was such a waste, ha ha!

Atelier Cologne Cedrat Enivrant this morning! I have been feeling citrusy all week.

Working from home this morning in advance of a voice lesson that is very much in the opposite direction from home from my workplace. It’s been pretty nice to work with kittens on my lap, with yummy home brewed coffee instead of undercleaned slightly burned office espresso maker coffee. It’s certainly less stressful!

Matching Marni with Red Pear inspired by someone who wore it a couple days ago. I’m red themed today because I’m wearing a shirt the color of Valiant Poppy with white polka dots and Clinique Cherry Pop lipstick.

Work has been stressful but mostly manageable lately. I’m having some coworker fatigue with the woman I work with the most. We’ve led meetings with almost every department in the organization for a project we’re working on (19 meetings total!), so I think we’re both a little sick of each other’s quirks right now. I hope to get back to feeling more fond of her soon.

CdG Lily for me today since it’s warm. drizzly/humid, and it matches my green and white blouse.

Had fun sniffing and chatting at Perfumarie with thegoddessrena and LizzieB yesterday evening.
I smelled T Rex among other things and I liked it, but not sure I’d wear it. I like smoke and there’s plenty of it amidst a dense swirl of florals and resins and stuff, but there was a long burning rubber stage in the middle that overwhelmed me. I loved the opening and the farther end of the drydown. It reminded me a little of Blackbird Targa which is easier to wear, imo.
Ended up buying a few mls of one of their “bulk” reserve scents which was a nice idyllic blend of dry grass, sagebrush and I don’t remember what. I like their blind sniffing opportunity featured there.

Bad news in Devaland. My upcoming contract went KAPUT! because the faculty was bought out by another hospital system and they won’t honor the stipulations in the contract. Also, my vent fan stopped working and it took me TWO DAYS to get a hold of a person to assist me. Apparently, the Mother Board is trashed. How that happens on a brand new fan, I don’t know. Another is being shipped to me, hopefully will arrive before I leave…????

PSA that Lush has released their Christmas products. This year one of the shower gels in the collection is Cinders with notes of cinnamon, orange, and almond oil among other things. I don’t think they’ve done this shower gel before. I think it’s just been a bath bomb and perfume. Has anyone tried a Cinders product and can comment on the scent?

I’ve tried both the bath bomb in the past) and shower gel (this year)
I do not get much orange from it. It mostly smells of almond and cinnamon. Actually, almond here strongly reminds me of cherry – mostly cherry pit and bark of cherry tree, but there is some cherry flesh too. It’s a bright and comforting scent. I like it, though I cannot say I am madly in love with it. :) Spicy/woody/fruity.
What I do not like is that it says ‘shower gel’ on the website and bottle, but the product itself is now close to a shower cream. It is kind of like their old shower cream formula (when Lush first introduced shower creams), while the current shower creams are even thicker. I am a big fan of their old-style shower gels and sure hope they will not discontinue that formula.

Most of their stores are downright claustrophobic. And as an introvert who is also uber sensitive to overstimulation, the glaring lights and blaring music make matters even worse.

If you happen to find yourself at Bell Square on a weekday afternoon, it is tolerable ;) The store is huge and usually empty. I’ve even made it through without being approached by salespeople there…

Very sweet of you Yasmina but as Robin noted I’m not the one in financial trouble but the co. which makes the perfume I was wearing, Orla Kiely. It’s a pity though because it’s a good perfume.

Wearing Eau de Rochas, which is Limelight through and through.

I mentioned on the Daily Lemming post for the Sephora lip balms (a few days back) that I had ordered the tangerine one – it arrived and it’s . . . a lip balm. Does not have a strong tangerine scent or taste, and is reasonably moisturizing. Happy to use it up, but my search for a Holy Grail lip balm will continue.

I checked out the ones Robin mentioned on today’s lemming and the reviews on the Ulta website are glowing as to their moisturizing qualities. I don’t usually spend that much for balm but might for the skull or pineapple if they have them in store.

Oh? Were you expecting… not a lip balm? I have a bunch of those sephora ones and the primary selling point for me is the packaging (tube, not pot) and that they’re beeswax-free.

My latest HG is the Laneige lip sleeping mask. They just came out with a new version in a tube that I’m excited to try.

SOTD – Frassai Teisenddu (same as yesterday’s SOTD). It feels like Caramel Leather and puts a lot of other leathers to shame. Does not really associates itself with any Pantene colors.

Wore Penhaligon’s Artemisia so that I wouldn’t smell too strong at a doc appt., and then it turned out the doc herself was wearing a lovely light floral. I suppose Artemisia could be the Crocus Petal, but I think it’s really a much more silvery white than that. No idea what to wear tomorrow…

April Aromatics Ray of Light today. It’s smelling like lime Life Savers in the opening.

I have a new kitty! His shelter name is Bertie Wooster (I don’t know if I’ll keep the name) he is 8 and a flamepoint Birman. He has dental disease and ear polyps, but is the sweetest, calmest boy, with a soft purr whenever you show him attention. His previous owner had to go to a nursing home. The jury is still out about him from the dog and other cat, the dog just seems flummoxed that another creature has appeared and the cat is acting like a diva.

Stopping in real quick to wave at my sweet-smelling friends! ???????? On day 6 of my MIL and her best friend being in town. I’m holding on to the thread of sanity I have left, as is my fiancé. Here’s hoping we can hold on for two more days!

They’re sweet but what is it about parents as you get older that makes it feel like you’re dealing with kids? Yesterday morning before we headed to Balloon Fiesta- before it was even daylight- I had to tell her that it was too cold for flip flops (like 45 degrees) and to go inside and change shoes! I haven’t even had to do that with my son in years lol!

Anyway, I’m in Shalimar Light today which is smelling like perfection. I’m matching it’s lemony creaminess with Limelight, though I don’t think that’s a perfect match.

Some almost tropical storm like downpours this morning in my area today. Not sure if it is remnants from Michael yet, or something completely different. There was a decent break in the wet this afternoon, but the weather guys and gals have said that another round of squishy is on the way for later on.

SOTD = Oriza L. Legrand Reve d’Ossian EdP from the sample stash. This is a very quiet woodsy incense on me. It’s been a whisper of a scent for hours now. No color association with it at all.

Anyway, around this time I usually play a game of chicken with myself – gloves or no gloves? My goal is to not have to wear gloves until Nov. 1st at the earliest…anything before that means I am a wuss.! Note: I am not judging anyone who wears gloves before I do.

Wore Nobile 1942 Ambra Nobile this morning and am in VCA Bois Dore post-shower. Both are luscious and winter-cozy (I seem to have skipped autumn…) and would be best represented by a chocolate shade with bejeweled orange running through it.

And now having written that, I’m reminded of the incredibly delicious gelato I had the other night. Should anyone find themselves in Ottawa at any point, make sure to stop in at Stella Luna. Then make sure you have time to go again and again and again. Or make arrangements to have the entire freezer case delivered to your home, which is what I was fantasizing about as I ate my way through 3 flavors…

SOTD = 28 La Pausa EDT

Instead of my usual 8 sprays, I used 10 because, why not? It’s not like 2 more sprays would get into asphyxia territory, not even close! Whoa, with just the 2 extra sprays, the leather became front and center! Next time I feel like engaging in bada$$ery, I can wear lashings if 28 La Pausa instead of 31 Rue Cambon!

    Commuting Woes No. 602:

I can’t believe I forgot to mention this earlier in the week! I almost ran over a stupid woman who was crossing a very dangerous section of the train station, cutting duagonally across where cars were turning either left or right after passing through a parking gate. She was too lazy to walk around to where it was safer to cross. She was also chatting away on her cell. Anyway, I applied my brakes just in time. I’m convinced she darted in front of my car because my car’s “Eyesight” mechanism did not even beep or slow down the car. Normally, if the car strays too far from the middle of the lane or there’s an obstruction close enough to where the computer determines a crash is likely based on speed and distance, the car will beep and then either slow down or stop.

I really think the cops should ticket cars that are waiting for their passenger by the entrance — this is usually the reason why someone would cross to that side without benefit of a cross-walk.

In snow, if I put it on one of the modes, as long as I drive under 25 mph, the car grips the road well and does not slide.

It was a very close call. I think the woman herself was shocked and I hope it was a lesson learned!

????. I am working on the 75mL bottle which is down to about half. And I have the humongo BUB which I bought in a panic when the EDTs were being switched to EDPs.

Twins with you tonight in some lovely La Pausa edt, courtesy of a very generous NST’er! I will be sad when this is gone. Have you tried the edp?

And in other news, that gorgeous multi-colored Alien bottle Robin wrote about earlier this week is winging it’s way to me. I didn’t think I had bottle envy, but I guess I do. (Actually I got 2 bottles, so if anyone is interested in one, maybe we can make arrangements)

I have tried the EDP. Actually, I have, on paper. It was hard to tell the difference. I do have the Chanel counter EDP coffret which is still brand nee so I can really test it if I wanted to. Once I love a perfume, I pretty much stick with it.

As to the beautiful Alien, I’m sitting on my hands until I can acquire it in the U.S. Lucky you!

SOTE is OJ Tiara, which is one of the most formal and beautiful fragrances in my collection. I wonder if it has changed much since launch. It’s just amazing.

Oh, you are reminding me that I have not worn Frangipani, my OJ love, in ages!

My SOTD was Satori which wafted beautifully in today’s extreme humidity.

No fragrance today. I had a bad ragweed allergy attack and it took forever (and a combination of Zyrtec, Sudafed and Flonase) to calm down. But everyone else is smelling wonderful. Hopefully I can wear something tomorrow to go with one of the colors.

I feel for you. I have been experiencing something similar but with mold allergies added for good measure. Rain, rain go away…..
