Happy Friday and happy World Teachers’ Day! Our community project for today: pick a fragrance that honors a teacher, in one way or another.
What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.
I decided to honor someone who teaches perfumery, and I am actually managing three someones. I wore Aftelier Ancient Resins to bed last night, and this morning, I've added Ayala Moriel Musk Malabi on one arm and Providence Perfume Co Provanilla on the other.
Reminder: on 10/12, wear a fragrance that evokes one of Pantone's colors for Fall 2018.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I decided to honor my mom today. She is a teacher and widths very hard. She wore Nahéma in the late 80’s and though she can’t stand it now, she wore it for years. I put on a touch of the parfum.
Happy Friday!
Works. I mean, I’m sure she widths too, but….
Coumarin, that is a darling story! (I love Nahéma.)
Me too! Even though I inherited her bottle, I don’t remember every smelling it on her.
Is it the new formulation she can’t stand? Or just the perfume in general?
She just doesn’t like roses anymore. Quite a shame since she once wore the Queen of ????. She wore Light Blue for almost a decade after her divorce.
I should say, I have a newer tester and an older PdT recharge and the new stuff isn’t half bad! The galbanum is a bit softer in the new version, and it has a bit of a wetter rose, but it’s still gorgeous.
Sweet!
It’s so luscious.
Wonderful that you have your mother’s bottle of Nahema to honor her.
Gorgeous scent, and a lovely story to match it. ????
Etat Libre d’Orange I Am Trash this morning. I like it a lot (certainly much better than I was prepared to, given the name!) It has to be the fruitiest scent we’ve ever seen Daniela Andrier do, but it’s very polished fruit. An unexpectedly pleasant surprise! After it wears off, I’m thinking Serge Lutens De Profundis.
I can’t wait til someone asks what scent you’re wearing today ????
Go Ari, and
really clever holyneroli!
Interesting, will have to try it!
TGIF! Looking forward to a long holiday weekend!
Wearing Tauer L’Eau, which I like and enjoy more in colder temperatures.
Happy Friday everyone!
Enjoy your long weekend!
Thank you. ????
A few years back, we traded in observed Columbus Day for a floating holiday. Enjoy your long weekend!
You too have a great weekend!
Awesome news that you have a long weekend!!! ???????????? Enjoy!
You too enjoy your weekend!
☕☕☕????????????
Bulgari Black redux.
My most beloved educator, Mrs. Black
My most un-beloved educator, Mrs. Schwartz
Fill in the details, at your discretion. ????????
And I hadn’t realized they had the same name until this CP…….memories light the corners of my mind
Misty………..LOLOLOL ????????????????????
????????????✌
that’s really funny!
Ha! My most un-beloved teacher was the aptly named Mrs. Grimm in third grade.
My mother worked at my elementary school (I had already entered high school when she started, thank god) and became friends with my least favorite teacher, so I’ve had to be polite about her all these years. Hmph.
And “Schwartz” means ” black” in German ????
Uh….yes
Haha, I didn’t get that your irony was intentional. I’m a bit slow in the uptake ????????
No, you’re not, and I hope you don’t think I was trying to insult you.
I just hoped my writing was clear.
✌????????????????
Ha! Smelling great and I love the connection!
Such a clever way to do the CP, Bear.
I had an un-beloved principal in one of the elementary schools I attended. Thankfully, I have forgotten her name. I do remember that individual as a clueless, mean person.
wearing Marni Spice, from the very generous Kpaint! I really like this one, when it’s gone I’m going to have to get more or find another cardamom forward way to replace it.
Yves Rocher…I have never ordered anything from them, interested in any thoughts you are interested in sharing. I got the promo email offering $10 off purchase, so I have my eye on the advent calendar, which is very cute and looks like it could be reused.
I have ordered many times from them. Their prices are very reasonable and often times I was able to get a freebie if you order a certain dollar amount, plus free shipping.
I especially like their shower gels for every day, Vanille Bourban is nice. Their Amber fragrance is pretty well done.
Good to know! I do have some of the amber fragrance – it’s lovely! but I think it’s discontinued because I don’t see it online.
I have not ordered anything from YR for probably a decade but in the past I enjoyed getting their packages since I always tried to order something when they had promotions going on – so I would get something interesting to try or use.
Yes, they do have great freebies indeed!
Watch for the limited edition holiday scents (there’s usually 3 scents).
???? do I wait for the release of the new holiday scents? Or do I jump on the $10 off offer… Decisions decisions ????
Like Coumarin, honoring my mother today, who was a teacher for many decades. She loved roses, so I’m in La Fille de Berlin. I wish I had some Shiseido Murasaki, as that’s the scent she wore for years, and the one I associate with her. When she was first diagnosed with cancer, I was searching for a bottle for her (it had been long discontinued), and that’s what brought me to NST. The funny thing is that Murasaki is not a rose scent. But I think she was put off rose scents for years, after receiving a hurtful comment about a rose scent she wore.
Love La Fille – you smell great!
Jirish what a beautiful story, we share a common bond- I found my mothers very first perfume thanks to a story Angela posted here regarding old collectors bottles. It brought back a memory my mom ( when diagnosed with terminal lung cancer) shared with me (over coffee as we spent her last months together) when she was 16, such a special treasured memory for me now.
I wish you a beautiful and serene day!
You bring tears to my eyes!!!
So wonderful that today’s CP creates a bond between jirish and you.
Perfume can be like memory in a bottle. I finally tracked down a bottle of Murasaki on evilbay and spent way too much on it, but when I gave it to my mom it was giving her time.
Beautiful story – thank you for sharing!
Have a peaceful day!
❤️
So touching. and I hope you will find a bottle of Murasaki.
Very touching story, jirish.
Shiseido’s Murasaki is gorgeous, it was a signature scent of mine in H.S.
To me, it’s an ethereal mix of lily of the valley, hyacinth, orris, gardenia, iris over an incense, leather and galbanum base.
Jhirish – I have Shiseido’s Murasaki (burgundy bottle) if you want some, email me at ldetrich at yahoo dot com. 🙂
I am a bust at today’s CP, since I have no teachers that I remember. Today as a complete break with everything I wore this week I am wearing Zeste de Soleil.
Ah, but you do smell great!
No SOTD yet as it’s early here. I will probably choose something retro, possibly L’Air du temps.
My fragrance obsession was definitely piqued by one if my grade school teachers, Miss Schwengler. I remember her smelling so fabulous as she would walk up and down the classroom rows during exams. I don’t know what she wore but it has stuck with me all these years.
Happy Friday everyone!
Interesting! Definitely more people wore fragrance in general when I was of school age.
sotd is Eau de Ciel
Lovely on this very warm and sunny autumn day
As for the CP: I had to think long and hard…then suddenly…my mother is a kindergarten teacher!!!
Tonight I’ll probably wear one of her signatures (L’eau d’Issey or Opium) in her honor 🙂
Kinder teachers rock! I teach Kinder students just one half day a week and they always kick me in the behind, but I adore them.
Wow those are some disparate signature scents! I would love to hear which one you choose.
They are!
My mother wore Opium back in the 80s to parties. When I was a little girl I was totally mesmerized by that gorgeous inro-like 7 ml perfume bottle with that tassle. She also wore Poison.
In the 90s she switched to L’eau d’Issey. Nowadays she also wears Eternity, J’adore….
She always felt Opium was slightly too spicy, so a few years ago she gifted me her bottle, it still has 3 or 4 ml in it and its one of my favourite fragrances.
And I chose Opium hahaha
How is your mom doing!
She is doing great!!!
Its really a sort of miracle.
She recovered in a way she was not even eligible for a transplant anymore.
She needs her afternoon sleeps though and she is on a low sodium diet, and she has to get some check ups every half year.
But all in all its so so much better than we hoped for!
She and my dad already made two short trips with their RV 🙂
This is great news! Miracles do happen!
Love those colors! Last night I tried out a sample of Tatcha’s Violet-C mask, which is about the same shade as Ultra Violet (it was a pretty good mask too).
Sampled Le Labo’s AnOther 13 this morning and learned that Ambroxan, much like Cetalox, smells like a chemical fire on my skin. Yikes. Will put on some Aromatics Elixir after I shower – my mother (now retired) was a teacher and it is one of her favorites.
AE is da bomb. You smell great!
Yeah, that’s how I felt about Another 13. I recently smelled Norlimbanol in its raw form and felt like I was assaulted! I recognize it in a lot of niche perfumes (the samples that need to be quarantined in a plastic bag). Hope you can wash it off successfully!
You smell great!
Aromatics elixir is one of the most gorgeous chypres ever and what a lovely reason to wear it.
Wearing and loving Cuirs – Carner Barcelona (and grateful to hannahmom giving me the opportunity to try it!) . The saffran note is amazing. The only teacher that could have worn this is my very elegant grade school English teacher which was an amazing teacher and a beautiful woman.
I loved almost each of my English teachers. I’m sure it helped that I loved the subject, but I just really had some amazing English teachers.
My senior year English teacher was Mrs. Fischer. She looked like Elizabeth Taylor seen through fuzzy cracked eyeglasses.
So glad you like it 🙂
Testing the Pekji Istanbul sample set this week. I find all of them fascinating. I haven’t yet decided if I need a bottle, partly because my first impression of the ones I like best is that they might smell better on a guy. And, of course, it’s kind of ridiculous for me to buy a bottle of anything.
There’s no hurry to decide as they are all sold out on Luckyscent (except for the sample set).
I wasn’t trying to participate in the poll when I decided to test these samples, so it’s only serendipitously a tribute to Luca Turin: I first read about this brand on his blog Perfumes I Love.
That gets credit!
Testing = School = Teacher
You are perfectly on theme!
I think I will blindly choose from my sample pack from Histories de Parfum in honor of all teachers – especially history teachers!!
( I hope I pick Ambre 14) *-)
ooooh, a lucky dip! that’s fun. can’t wait to hear what you wore. 😉
Ah, extra points for creative solution to the project!
Hi everyone! I am traveling today but packed my sample of Dead of Winter to honor my high school English teacher. She was challenging and strict but had a romantic streak a mile wide and understood how important that stuff was to high schoolers – her policy was no late homework ever, unless it was because of love. She once told us a story about how her husband failed a test because it required him to comment on the last page of James Joyce’s The Dead, and he loved it so much that he memorized it instead of writing the essay. Since the last page of The Dead has falling snow, I thought Dead of Winter would be the right choice. Also I smell just interesting enough for me and just pleasant enough to be surrounded by family.
Excellent choice.
Great story. What a wonderful teacher. I want to read a book about her!
What a great story and good CP “paring”!
What a great story and pairing! I remember snow falling on Angelica Huston in the movie version, which was lovely.
Fantastic, and one of my favorite stories when I was in college.

Great story! What’s the perfume like?
Enjoy your travels!
Oops! I don’t know how I managed to post twice! The perfume is anise-vanilla-musk, and reminds me of Lolita Lempicka.
And normally I would delete the 2nd, but got here late and you have responses to both 🙂
This is a lovely post and you smell beautiful.
I’m wearing En Voyage perfumes Fiore di Bellagio to honor my second grade teacher, Mrs. Kauffman. I don’t remember much about her class but I loved her; she was also our neighbor and grew the most beautiful flowers every year. Because of her, I pretty much peaked in second grade 🙂 happy Friday, everyone.
????
Ha! Great memory.
Ha! Beautiful scent! I was tempted by it when it first was launched.
Second Grade? You’re a late bloomer! Pretty sure I peaked in utero ????
My dad said my younger sister and I were accidents…so I peaked before I was conceived – mwahahahaha ????????????????????????????????
SotM = Cologne du 68
I’m imagining you smell fantastic, Robin.
I chose Cd68 because I sometimes wear it to school, and my students like it. They also comment favorably on Apres L’Ondee, Insolence edt, and surprisingly they like L’Heure Bleue edt. Just noticed these are all Guerlain. Hmmm. Smart kids, I guess. 😀
Have a fabulously fragrant fantastic Friday, NSTers.
Those kids have good taste!
Good taste for sure, I like to the music education helps. 😉
gah, I’d like to “think” the music education helps. And I need typing lessons, lol
Very smart kids !!
🙂
Those are some classy kids you teach.
You know, some of them have rather refined tastes! One student in third grade sometimes has a gold pocket watch in his cardigan pocket!
And one day, in some parallel NST universe, one of those kids will be posting about their favorite music teacher who always smelled so good!
oh, gosh yes, I hope so 😀 😀 😀
And I know you smelled great!
thanks, Robin, and woo-hoo for Cd68, it always smells great!
Your students liking Guerlain scents is totally amazeballs!
amazeballs, ha ha! yes, I think it’s fun for the kids to smell a little perfume rather than the stale, tinny air the brass section leaves behind after band class.
Wow, I haven’t thought about that particular funk in forever! My best friend played flute in junior high, and I remember that smell would waft down a certain staircase in the building…
Jalapeno is *totes* right—those Guerlain-loving kids are amazeballs! (And those of us who play woodwinds thank you for the perfumed air.????)
I love that your students make their likes known to you!
Happy Friday, fragrant folks!
Xerjoff Lira and Montale Vanilla Cake today.
Happy Friday She-ra!
Vanilla Quest 2018 is still going strong!
Friday!
1) I do not associate any my teachers nor professors with a scent. I was a STEM student and later a Film grad student and none of my male or female teachers smelled of anything but really good soap and plain cream. (usually in labs you are asked NOT to wear fragrance – particularly in chem/biochem labs)
2) Am wearing Prada Infusion Vetiver- perfect for our gray and gold dawn this morning- and we will be getting rain later on.
3) Having homemade Cafe du Monde coffee and donuts brought in by a coworker. Cardio this weekend!
YUM! I want your breakfast! 🙂
So, so good. I am kinda relieved that one donut has about the same calories as a bagel, so there is that!
With that coffee, you need beignets! MMM! Fantasising….
Oh yes- but that lovely glazed ring made a more than acceptable substitution!
I’m wearing vintage No. 5 edt in loving memory of my mom, who taught high school for more than 40 years. She actually taught a few grandkids of her earliest students.
Best and happiest of Fridays to all —
That’s awesome about your mom! You smell great.
How lovely.- and a testimony to power of community and teaching.
You smell beautiful ! What a nice way to honor your Mom.
That is amazing, how your mom was able to teach more than one generation. Kudos to her!
Amazing story. What a great tribute to your mom.
In her one year of teaching, my mom taught siblings of several cousins’ spouses (this would have been way before the marriages).
FearsMice ~ What a lovely story about your mom! My dad taught at the same H.S. for over 35 years, it was impossible to go somewhere without running into a former student and they always managed to have a funny story involving my dad. 🙂
If I had any vintage White Shoulders, I’d be wearing that as it was a favorite of my wonderful 6th grade teacher, Mrs. Prescott. She could still an entire room of rowdy kids with her reading of “The Telltale Heart” and was known to sneak a tv into her classroom so that we could watch the World Series (baseball became a math and geometry lesson). The saying about never knowing where a teacher’s influence stops? So true.
Great story about a great teacher!
truth! i am who i am today in part because of a teacher who cared enough to overlook my awkward youth and encouraged me to love learning.
Awesome teacher ????
Excellent story and teacher!
Mrs. Prescott sounds rad!
Happy Friday everyone! SOTD is vintage Estee Lauder’s Alliage (1970’s bottle). My dad was a teacher, it reminds me of his cologne he wore at the time. I really wish I remembered what he wore.
I’m still having horrific allergies, I can barely smell it but I’ve received a few compliments today. My assistant got promoted to another department (hooray for her!) so I’m off to find another employee. 😀
Boo on the allergies, but sweet tribute to your dad. A friend of mine who is a teacher wears Aliage as her work scent (and patchouli oil on the weekends).
Ohhh, that sounds like a great combo! I may try mixing it with either L’ Artisan’s Patchouli Patch or SMN’s Patchouli. 🙂
Speaking of teachers, I had an art teacher in grade school whom I adored that I’m pretty certain wore Aromatics Elixir. She smelled like a mix of AE, potter’s clay and paint oils.
Mmm, that last combo sounds like it would work! Maybe Smellbent Artist’s Studio layered with AE?
Oh, that sounds like a great combo! WIll check out that one. Smell Bent is a really fun line!
Good luck finding a new assistant, and hope the allergies ease too!
Yay for smelling good!
So this is probably reaching for the CP, but today I an honoring my favorite uncle who was an educator and principal his whole life until he retired at the age of 79.
I already told this story to flopper the other day, but in the summers when he was out of school he grew roses. His whole front yard was a massive garden of hybrid tea roses- rows and rows of them- in every color. I will never forget how beautiful and fragrant they were. There was one deep red one that was my favorite- Mr. Lincoln (roses have names haha). When I wear Noir de Noir it reminds me of my uncle and Mr. Lincoln. So that’s what I’m in today!
Love this ????
Wonderful story and I love it when real roses have a distinctive scent. My dad grew roses too.
Beautiful story and you smell divine.
I loved reading this.
It’s been ages since I have heard someone refer to Mr. Lincoln Roses. I remember them and “Peace” from my childhood. One of my relatives must have grown some, but I don’t know who.
What a wonderful story! I adore Mr. Lincoln roses. I have David Austin’s Evelyn rose and Sterling roses.
I’m thinking about my high school history teacher, Mr. Shuldiner. He was gay, eccentric, not warm, blunt, a bit disheveled looking, wore flamboyant wide ties, and his signature taupe Birkenstocks with socks, which we all made fun of behind his back (and ironically, became my shoe of choice in college, with socks in the winter!). He was stuck in the hippie era. He taught all of my siblings as well. I remember he called my parents and told them I was unlikely to pass the AP history test so I shouldn’t bother with it. I passed! Needless to say, I didn’t like him much, but he was a character.
Around 1986 he stood in front of the class and said “ladies, I have a treatable, but incurable, disease” and then started with the history lesson without a hitch. That was how I learned about AIDS. He died some time in the mid 90s.
I’m wearing Hendley Rosenthal in his honor since it has a bit of a hippie vibe. If he were to wear perfume, I would scent him with Rosenthal.
This really touched me. Thank you for sharing.
So sad how many passed from AIDS. I was in nursing school then and it was a very hot topic. I still remember the first AIDS patient I took care of way back in the 80’s. ????
My 1st job was in 1993 and I also remember the 1st patient I had with AIDS. It was an intense and sad time.
Yes, very sad, and so much better now that HIV/AIDS is no longer a death sentence.
What a brave and strong man to bring so much truth and personal experience to the classroom. This is a very touching tribute.
What a lovely story. Sad, though. Except for the a Birkenstock’s…my sister has always owned a pair, at least since the mid ‘70s.
I still own a pair!
They don’t fit my foot, unfortunately. But when I go to Nor Cal, it makes me smile to see them everywhere.
Your story made me tear up a little. I love that you chose to honor him today.
It’s a bittersweet memory, for sure.
Touching story. Sniff….
Wow. That’s an amazing story. It was so brave of him to share his condition.
He actually didn’t tell us what his illness was. He was very tight lipped about his personal life. I think he felt compelled to tell us because he was starting to have frequent absences. By the end of my senior year (1988) he was a shadow of his former self.
What a touching story, ElisaP!
Wow, what a story!
Happy Teacher’s Day to all the marvelous educators out there!
And happy Friday Day to the rest of us (although tonight is #1 out of four in a row for me☹️)!
SOTD is PP Salmoé because it’s sunny, cool, and I’m feeling it! My belly is full of oatmeal with ground flax seed, cinnamon, maple syrup, and a banana. About to sit down with my coffee, read NST comments, and get my day started. T-Rex is making steady inroads on the oatmeal pan, and I doubt I’ll even need to wash it when she’s done. ????
BdJ has short review of Joy today, and she was more generous with her star rating than I was. I got a whiff of it in Ulta and all I can say is “Thanks, but no thanks!” ????
I don’t have a dishwasher at my apartment – wish I had a T-Rex instead! 😉
She comes in handy sometimes. ????
My friend who lives in a pre-washing machine apartment has a countertop dishwasher and she loves it! I don’t know if you have the room/budget for it, but I didn’t even know they existed until she got one.
That’s a good tip! I didn’t know those existed either
Never heard of such a thing! Very interesting but since I only have about 10 dishes total, it’s not too much of a chore to wash by hand. Dishwashers of any kind use a boatload of water, too. I like to make the dishlicker earn her keep. She needs to be needed????
Oooooooh, maybe I will make some oatmeal this weekend! ????
When I was in 5th grade, Mrs Hawkins had a couple of sleepovers (one for the girls and one for the boys) at her 200 year old house. I learned then that french toast tastes better with vanilla extract in the batter, a practice I continue to this day. For a breakfasty vanilla scent, I’m wearing Lann-Ael
Just had French toast for dinner last night. I’m a huge fan of a goodly dollop of vanilla mixed in with the eggs. Also a a splash of milk, a pinch of salt, and a heavy dusting of cinnamon. Mrs Hawkins was right on! ????
I’m drooling. Tomorrow morning, I have a date with a stack of IHOP pumpkin pancakes. Note to self: bring some almond butter in case they don’t offer peanut butter due to allergy concerns.
I was just discussing French toast yesterday! I much prefer to soak the toast in batter, for a denser texture, but I found myself in the minority. All of my coworkers barely dip the bread in. I would live to hear your opinion I the matter. ????
Dip bread on both sides. Don’t want it soggy enough that it falls apart before it gets in the pan but there’s got to be enough flavor imbued. Always use a goodly amount of butter in the pan.
Mr. Jalapeno and I are firmly in the “soak that bread!” camp. Also agree with using vanilla extract in the batter. Some of the best French toast we have made uses challah bread. ????
One of my favorite (now defunct) Ukrainian diners in the East Village made challah french toast that was soooo good! Brioche works well, too. Yumm.
Love love love French toast and Lann-Ael! So nice to hear it mentioned here, as it’s rare (unless it’s me!).
My favorite teacher of all time was my reading teacher in junior high (I don’t think they call it “reading class” anymore, but it was basically a literature class for middle-schoolers). My jr. high followed the now-defunct model of 7th-thru-9th grades, and I was in her class in 7th and 8th and became her TA in 9th. Outwardly she was spinsterish, forbidding and a tiny bit masculine, but get to know her and you’d realize she was warm and funny and truly cared about her students. I chose Dior Homme because it’s iris and leather, which can be forbidding and a bit masculine but which becomes warm and cozy and lovely in not much time at all.
Perfect!
House twin!
I’m in Chanel Cuir de Russie, the last drops, to honor my Russian professors in college, Mr. Bandemehr and Mr. Klimenko. I began college as a Russian major. They were handsome and charming and demanding, and I’ve been remembering them a lot lately because in watching the show “The Americans” on Amazon Prime, I so much enjoy hearing all the Russian, and even can recognize a phrase or sentence here and there. They would occasionally teach us Russian songs and those were my favorite lessons. I can still sing them! I changed majors and never got very good, but they introduced me to a more cosmopolitan perspective than I’d ever had in my little rural town in Michigan.
Great story! I grew up in rural Michigan too, and remember experiencing a bit of culture shock upon going away to college. There were a significant number of international students at my college, and it was so novel and exciting to overhear foreign (to me) language conversations happening in the dorms, on the quad, and in the cafeteria.
Calypso, contact me if you’d like to get some additional CdR for a couple more walks down that memory lane 🙂
Thank you so much! That’s very kind. I think I won’t ask for it, though, because I’m not a real lover of that one, so it would be a bit wasted on me.
Hail, fellow Russian major! Or Привет, товарищ if you prefer. ???? Mr. Apparatchik and I watched The Americans, and I can still understand enough Russian that I would tell him that the subtitles and the spoken words of the Russian dialogue were sometimes slightly off. I always wondered why until I read an interview with the actor who played Oleg. The Russian dialogue was never written in Russian in the scripts, it was written in English. The Russian -speaking actors translated it as they spoke their lines, but the original English was what was used for the subtitles, hence the occasional slight difference.
That’s so fascinating! Wow! I’ve also noticed slight differences. Don’t you just love Oleg? He’s turning into my favourite character. (I’m still in Season 5.) Спасибо!
I’ve had many memorable teachers, thank goodness, but Mrs. Johnstone in the 4th grade stands out. She could play the trumpet (I was in awe.) On rainy days when we couldn’t go outside for recess, she taught us to play chess, a useful skill I retain to this day.
In her honor, I’m wearing Demeter Thunderstorm.
Perfect!
I’m in Dior Dune today, for no reason other than to use it before my mini bottle evaporates. But I’m thinking about my high school art teacher Mrs. Cornell. I think I was one of her favorites – probably because I was one of the few students who took art class seriously, and wasn’t just in it for an easy A. During the final semester of my senior year I had two hours of independent study in the art studio first thing in the morning, and it was such a serene and meditative way to start my day. I had the full run of her classroom – including the art supplies closet that was off-limits to all but her few independent study students. I know for a fact that she purchased many of her classroom art supplies with her own money. Here’s to the art teachers who do so much with so little!
Art teachers don’t get the credit they deserve!
Also, dune is my grandma’s fave perfume and she worked as a primary school teacher on the isle of Man – it’s quite an edgy choice for a teacher.
I recall having 2 rather good art teachers in junior high. The smell of India Ink can take be back to those classes sometimes.
Wearing Petits Papiers by Mad et Len because I love it.
My car is getting over 2 K of repairs today, and I’ll take all the comfort can get.
I don’t blame you ! Good luck !!
Since you’re taking such a good care of your car, I hope it appreciates it and will serve you well for many more years (if you want to, of course).
Gracious, sorry!!
Good grief! My car has something rattling around somewhere and I don’t have time to go to the mechanic until the 20th.
Yikes! That’s a serious expense. I hope everything gets fixed right and stays fixed. ????
I love how so many people have tied their scents to former teachers. I wish I’d been that creative with the CP, but I went the apple route since it’s a symbol associated with teachers. It gave me a great excuse to wear Equestrian. Equestrian smells like fall to me, so it also brings to mind the beginning of the school year.
My favorite teacher was my 7-10 grade English teacher Mrs. Schaetzle (I went to the same arts magnet school for 7-12 grades). She scared me when I first met her at 7th grade orientation because she reminded me of Kathy Bates, whom I connected to her Misery character. Partly because English was my favorite subject and because she was a great teacher, we had a really good relationship. I was a teacher’s assistant for her when I was a senior, which was a lot of fun (grading papers, listening to students deliver oral book reports, etc). I don’t ever remember her smelling of anything. Her favorite author was Willa Cather, and she would dress up as her for Halloween.
Also, my bff is an English teacher, and I could have worn L de Lolita Lempicka since it’s one of the perfumes she wears. Maybe I’ll wear it tonight.
My 8th grade English teacher was also named Mrs. Schaetzle, oddly enough.
She was tall and thin, like a pencil become human. ????
I was stymied all week in coming up with an appropriate scent for today’s CP, until yesterday morning during yoga class as I finally centered myself after a stressful week, when I finally saw the light: I would honor my two yoga teachers who have helped me find peace through their caring and insightful instruction. And so my SOTD is Pacifica Mountain Temple. Its notes of patchouli, orange, ginger, vetiver, violet, and incense are especially soothing and comforting on a chilly, gloomy, and rainy fall day.
A shout out to all the wonderful teachers out there, and a double shoutout to my dear son who, for the past 18 years, has dedicated himself to teaching those less fortunate than he in a large, urban high school. I know there are many like you out there.
A Little Bear update: She is thriving, is extremely playful and energetic and eats a lot! She is also very brave! The other day, one of the Two Sisters (my 3-year old Maine Coone cats), who is umpteen sizes bigger than Little Bear, came in and hissed at her, and all 22 ounces of Little Bear fearlessly hissed right back!
Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend. Namaste!
That little bear has a big personality! ???? You smell great, and connecting the CP to a Yoga Teacher is genius.
My connection is also to my yoga teacher! Teacher twins!
Go Little Bear!
(you smell nice, BTW)
I LOVE Maine Coon cats! My last kitty, Caz (short for Casanova), was a rescue cat that I’m convinced had to be at least part Maine Coon. He was a stubbornly outdoor cat – he used to listen for the sound of my car coming home and would gallop across the yard to greet me. He lived a happy 17 years, and finally succumbed to some kind of internal malady after spending one last wild night doing what he loved, hunting little critters in the dark. 🙂
My sister had a rescue cat named Fred that she thought was part Maine Coon too. He was a total sweetheart. He was the biggest, furriest cat, but had the tiniest, chirpiest little voice.
Ya know, thanks for reminding me about my adult life teachers! Odd that didn’t occur to me, especially since they really enrich my adult life. And nice perfume choice to honor her!
Glad the kitty is doing well and sticking up for herself!
And kudos to your son who is doing great snd challenging work ????
Nice all around, Laila!
It sounds like Little Bear is settling in rather well! Thanks for the reminder about Tibetan Mountain Temple… I should give that some “air” time soon.
Disconcerting that I cannot remember my HS English teacher’s name (junior year). First semester was Satire, second semester was World Literature. We read One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and did a field trip to see the play in a tiny little theater in San Francisco. We pulled examples of satire from National Lampoon and Mad Magazine. We also did field trips to A.C.T. Productions of Cyrano, The Tempest and Taming of the Shrew (not all in the same year.)
I can’t think of her scent so I’m stretching it by wearing Fiori di Capri, which is how I imagine the island in The Tempest….
Sounds like a class I’d like now! English class was good for movie and play field trips.
What a cool class and teacher!
I have been trying all day to remember the name of my fantastic 5th grade teacher. I was already a voracious reader but she might have been the first teacher who was really helpful in terms of directing my reading.
Wonderful stories about education today.
I would like to honor my Spanish teacher in high school, I was a very chaotic teenager and almost lost my way but Ms Anne Zelinsky kept faith in me and I passed by baccalaureat. She was a feminist, very elegant and she was a friend of Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir. I picked Gres Cabochard which seems to fit her personality.
Your teacher sounds so glamorous!
Right? Very cool
Yes, she really was, she wore wonderfully cut trouser suits.
Wow! What an impressive person – Great to hear about her impact.
I did not post about my teacher, but my Spanish professor in college was also an amazing woman – Señora Chela – she believed in everyone, indescriminetly – I think she made a lot of people fluent in Spanish and appreciative of the Mexican culture that would not have if it were not for her blind faith in people.
Teachers can have such an influence on us, thank you for sharing.
I’m wearing Parfums de Nicolaï New York because a teacher is mentioned in its review in Perfumes the Guide. And mainly because it smells wonderful, is very soothing and just great. I’m glad I’m not working tomorrow as today was too long and utterly boring and had to be spent indoors and the weather was glorious. So NY was a great antidote to that.
I’m glad something worked out for you!
SOTD = Chanel No.19 EDP
Austere and grounded, yet approachable.
My mom was a ::::gasp:::: physics AND chemistry teacher. She only taught for one year before she started popping out babies. At one point, she had three under 3! I was the youngest of the three and I was quite the handful. She had my youngest sister < 3 years later.
Your mom must be Wonder Woman!
That and she had help ????. I was a picky eater and it used to take me 2 hours, sometimes longer, to finish lunch and/or dinner. I got away with reluctantly drinking a glass of milk for breakfast.
Aha, someone else besides my son! And he is still a slow eater at 20.
So, did you have your personal physics and chemistry tutor at home when you were growing up? 😉
You smell great! I should wear my No 19 EdP decant more often, finish it and decide if I need a bottle (in addition to the other two concentrations that I already have).
Ha! I got the genes to understand and do well in high school level chemistry and physics without tutoring assistance 🙂
Just like every home should have chicken boiling in a pot, every home should have a bottle of Chanel No. 19 EDP!
Oh my gosh, I think that’s my favorite thing you’ve ever said ????
????
Your mom sounds like she is quite formidable!
And she still is in some ways!
Cool about your mom! Now I see where you get your perfume-math genes???? Rather brilliant!
Thanks…although my mom would rather I apply those genes to something non-perfume related!
hajisuuri, your mom’s totally a Chanel-worthy shero!
Gah!!! “hajusuuri”, you stupid fingers! ????????♀️
Ha!
Chanel No. 19 EDT, because it reminds me of my 4th grade teacher. I first smelled this fragrance about five years ago, and this teacher popped into my mind. I had not seen this lady for a number of years, so I was surprised by this.
What a cool scent memory!
I don’t have the words to compose something so lovely as the previous posts. I chose Eau des Merveilles to honor tiffanie. I know that she must be beloved by her students with her sunny disposition and kindness that radiates from her daily comments.
My favorite teachers were June King who was my homeroom teacher all through high school and Miss Rhude, who was a fantastic english teacher despite her last name. She taught me to love to read. I don’t remember smelling perfume on either of them.
You smell nice and it’s a nice tribute to our tiffanie.
thank you, Petunia! You make my heart happy. 😀
EdM is a wonderful choice today. My students like it too.
Oh, the feels in this! ????????????????????
Awww, yay Petunia and tiffanie!
Miss Rhude!???????? The love of reading is pretty much the best lesson/gift to impart, imho.
I don’t think teachers in my school wore any perfumes to work: not only perfumes were not easily available or affordable where I grew up, but also our school was very strict, so I’d expect such a frivolous behavior would have been frowned upon. But in honor of all the great teachers I had (some – as teachers, some – as human beings and rare ones as both), I’m wearing vintage Miss Dior cologne (and have vintage extrait with me to replenish it later) as something that my teachers could have worn.
Thank you everybody for wonderful stories about teachers in your life. I wish everyone a good weekend.
Sounds like you’re still on vacation!
Unfortunately, I’m back already – so I really appreciate the upcoming weekend 🙂 (I even might finally spend some time on my blog)
Yep, recovering from vacation!
Wearing Frederic Malle En Passant on one arm, Christian Dior Sakura on the other. Both have a lovely watery lilac note although En Passant is more interesting with its cucumber and wheat notes. Sakura dries down to a soft and slightly powdery cherry blossom with a mimosa note that reminds me of Diptyque’s Mimosa candle.
Sakura sounds nice to me!
I’m very lucky to have had many wonderful teachers and to get to work with several every day. But like Laila, I thought of my favorite yoga teacher for this project because she taught me so much about mindfulness and presence. I was super lucky to end up in her beginner’s yoga series of classes, which I ended up taking several times because I kept getting more and more from it. She also went on a trip to Nepal and her stories and photos ignited my dream to one day travel there. I don’t live in the city where she teaches any longer, but I still think of her teaching when I practice yoga today.
So Terese, I chose Dzongka in your honor. (I think she would like it.)
my first yoga teacher was named Miriam, she asked us to call her Mim. I still think of her kindness, grace, and serenity when I go to yoga today.
Hail to all the educators out there….myself include–I’ve taught everything from junior high on up to grad school. I have many memories of many outstanding teachers, but the one who turned me into an educator was Austin Orestes Perego. He was my undergrad theatre education teacher and he died just about a year after I graduated. His widow invited a few of his recent students to help her clean out his university office, and she asked us to take some of his books. Now, about 45 years later, I still have that theatre history book with his name and his notes in it. Since I most associate the dusty backstage theatre smells with him, I am wearing Incense Extreme today. I think he would like it…I sure do!
Great story!
Wow.
Tres cool!
Oh, you made me weep! What a lovely story.
I don’t ever remember any of my teachers in school wearing perfume. Some of them had interesting clothes or accessories, though. For example, my Kindergarten teacher wore a Snoopy wristwatch. As one of her students, I thought that was just about the coolest thing ever.
SOTD = Guerlain Mitsouko EdP, from the sample stash. This smells a) wonderful to me and also b) somehow speaks of experience. I’m going to bring up the old expression “Experience is the best teacher.”
Nice tie in.
Thanks! I was kind of at a loss for the project until Wednesday or so. Then I had my “Aha!” moment.
Experience has made me rich
And now they’re after mmmeeeeeeeee ✨????????????✨????????????????????
Ha!
Sounds like you had a cool teacher. The one teacher I thought was cool was the one who insisted on wearing sneakers with her teacher uniform blouse and skirt. I went to a Roman Catholic school where the teachers were secular.
I adored Mrs. Middleton. I remember her as a kind, older lady. I’m willing to bet that my love of learning was nourished in her class.
You smell wonderful, Jalapeno! I would’ve thought a Snoopy watch was the coolest too…all the way through grad school, never mind kindergarten. ????
At the time, I simply thought it was neat that an adult would wear something like that. Grownups were always so serious. But Snoopy was fun! As an adult, I can see that it was a way of showing a little bit of personality and a human touch on the job.
At some point in college I realized that I’d been fortunate and probably had way more than my fair share of great teachers, going all the way back to elementary school. And I started to worry that I might’ve used up my quota, as it were.????
My mom’s a teacher, and many of my friends are too—all at various levels. (Technically, I have a teaching certificate myself; it’s just not in use.) Kudos and thanks to them and to all the teachers in the NST community!!!❤️❤️
I’m wearing La Fille de Berlin in honor of Mr. A., my high school English teacher, whom I had for 2 years and who also led the school’s educational tours of Europe. He was an uncommonly excellent teacher and a very kind person. I carry his classroom and life lessons with me to this day. The perfume is a reference to the fact that he (a German speaker) and the German teacher from another high school, between the two of them, *still* got a group of us students on the wrong U-Bahn train one night in Munich.????
A wonderful weekend to you all, NSTers!
Nice story, Creosote and you smell good! What were some of those life lessons.
Thanks! Well, there was the practical: the travel-related “Never pass up a perfectly good bathroom” has served me well in many countries. Then there was the warning that, yes, truly evil people do exist. (That one came with a comment along the lines of “I’m here to tell you”/“I can attest”.????)
Oh yes, I subscribe to the never pass up a perfect good bathroom tip!
Funny, and nice they took y’all to Europe!
It was an EF Educational Tour, and he’d been doing them for years. The fact that it was *him* doing it is really the single deciding factor in my parents allowing me to go.
Similar to many of you, my mom was a math teacher and still is to this day to my 2 kids. Thanks to mom, her patience and perseverance (she only speaks Chinese while both kids speak broken), both kids excel in math. Back in the 80’s, 90’s and even in the 00’s when my mom was working as a teacher, sadly she did not own any perfumes (due to the in-accessibility living in a small town in China), but she now own a number of them. I wore Nirvana Rose, not particularly related to the CP. I got a complement from my neighbor 20 ft away!
Speaking of teachers, I had many wonderful teachers. The first one popped in my mind was my university freshman year math professor. He was my rockstar teacher. The class in first year was usually laaaaarge, like several hundred-ish, you literally have to arrive 10min early to secure a front seat. He would always give the assignment first thing at the conor of the blackboard, so that as soon as the bell rang at the end of the class, he would stop on the dot, even if he was in the middle of a sentence, so that we could run and catch the next class across the huge campus. I enjoyed the classes so much and nearly scored 100%!
Thanks to all the teachers in my life, truely appreciated!
