Wednesday scent of the day 9/26

Posted by Robin on 26 September 2018 204 Comments

Hump day and Johnny Appleseed Day and Fitness Day, plus Olivia Newton-John's birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm growing hair, maybe, while getting partial credit in By Kilian Sacred Wood.

Reminder: on 9/28, wear a fragrance by Byredo, Berdoues or Bruno Fazzolari, if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter B.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I participated in the CP early in the morning by wearing Byredo Rose Noir. It’s lovely but fleeting.

Now I am wearing Diptyque Eau Lente. Yum.

I like Eau Lente, it was very enjoyable the whole way through. I may replace my sample with a decant at some point. Buying decants before full bottles really saved my budget last year! :)

        Decants rule!
I especially enjoy Eau Lente when the weather is cold. A perfect scent for relaxing under a soft blanket with a warm kitty at your side.

I have a bottle of Dzongkha, and it really should be perfect for me. Cardamom, incense tea – all notes I love, and want to have surrounding me. Alas, I try and try, and it still won’t work.

Interesting article Robin…yes, I could use more hair….when my Samsara comes in I’ll apply to the top of my head, and I’ll report my results :)

I wish I had remembered to use one of by Byredo samples, but as it is I have a dab of Tommy Girl on my left hand (because I thought it was Bois des Isles – shame on me for not labeling everything!) and a dab of Equistrius on my right hand.

Last night I wore L’ombre dans l’eau to bed, and I was so happy I could smell the blackcurrent, it sounds improbable, but I couldn’t smell it before – last night it was like I had spread jam over my arms. Before, I had only smelled “70’s/80’s accord”, maybe my nose is getting better at recognizing scents? I hope? So I read up on it a little, and I’m excited to see if I can smell the black current in First and Chamade later.

Just one spritz under my blouse this morning will waft up my neck all day, smelling of violet bubblegum. I’m teaching pre-K/Kinder music classes this morning, hope the kids like it when they give me their sneaky hugs.

I’m wearing Miller & Bertaux Shanti Shanti, maybe 1/8th credit since Bertaux starts with B? Roses and patchouli – though less patchouli than I remember. Grateful to my swap partner for this sample, as I had a memory that was perhaps slightly better than the reality, and this one’s pricey and only comes in giant bottles! I still really like it though….

Byredo 1996 from a sample. This may just be the first Byredo that is more than a meh or a scrubber on me. I’ll see how it progresses through the day. Fifth time is a charm, I guess.
Last night was open house at the middle school and madtownteen has the same seventh grade home room teacher that my oldest did. He just happens to have been born in 1996, how’s that for some Wednesday irony.????

In Rose Anonyme today, since I had no idea what to expect from the season and the weather.

Does anyone know if it’s possible to unscrew the caps on the Atelier Cologne 7.5mL sprays? I much prefer RA in spray form, and once this spray is done, I have a backup 7.5mL in splash form that I barely use. I’d like to decant it into the spray bottle…I haven’t had much luck trying to unscrew it yet.

They even put the sprays in cute tiny boxes! Nine year old me would have loved this, I used to have a whole collection of boxes that were too small to put anything in :-)

Happy to report no fire truck was blocking me in this morning. Wearing Bal d’Afrique but wishing I was in Ummagumma. I seem to not enjoy BdA anymore, and I also think it smells almost identical to Atelier Vetiver Fatal. I think I’ll set both of those decants aside for the next swap meet. Funny though that I wasn’t sure Ummagumma was subtle enough for work, but I feel like BdA is shouting its presence. Live and learn…

Looking forward to lunch with a girlfriend today. I usually bring my lunch from home, so it will be nice to actually get out of the office for a bit today.

In Byredo Pulp for a warm, humid and sunny day which I am enjoying a lot, before we get back again to rain and lower temps later tonight.

My mother has drained two decants of Amouage Honour and now wants a full bottle for Christmas. Since Fragrancenet has a good deal on the body butter, I will get the body butter when I get paid tomorrow and get the soap a little later on. Out of all the things she has tried, she asks for the expensive stuff.

No B’s for me today. Currently sampling SP Parfums Lemon & Orange Sorbet, which is pretty nice but very low projection. Poor SP really got savaged in the new Guide. I’ll agree that a bunch of his scents are pretty odd, but I do like Sunmilkflowers quite a bit.

Finally got a decent night’s sleep! Which correlates strongly with broken-elbow-husband getting a decent night’s sleep. Hoping this continues. Amazing how much better the world looks when you’ve had some decent zzzzzz’s.

oh, thanks for asking! Not magically warding it off, but definitely controlling it and soothing it–a Darphin Intral cream that I’m using straight after swimming that seems to relieve the immediate heat and redness, and a Rodial Dragon’s Blood moisturiser that seems to generally improve things. Both were ferociously expensive (and I am giving the Rodial a lot of side eye for its “anti-aging” nonsense) but they feel like they were worth it: my face isn’t one big nasty patch of blisters.

I am wearing Frances Denney Interlude, something from the seventies and eighties. I am not even sure what all of the notes are, but on me, it smells wonderful and lasts a long time. It’s kind of spicy and perhaps has sandalwood. Have to be careful not to overapply, though.

I’m glad for this CP. it’s making me go through the Grands Cru sample set from Berdoues I got close to a year ago. Today is Vanira Moorea. I’m shoving my wrist into my nose and still not getting much. I’ll keep spraying. Hoping it becomes more vanilla…I think it is.

Two $5 movies yesterday… Searching and Operation Finale. Searching is every parent’s nightmare.

We got some food at a local coffee shop in between. As my husband was paying, a cop was getting something. So husband asked if cops generally like having UN in town or hate it. (I thought they might like the overtime…). He basically said they all hate it. Made me chuckle. Main benefit to us is that our bus skips two stops (when it’s not diverted) so getting home is a tad faster.

AMC has a Stubs program. You can join for free and get $5 Tuesdays. I upgraded to the $15 annual so I can buy online tickets with no service fee. It’ll paid for itself since I generally am getting two tickets. And I get points. (A couple of weeks ago I got a free large soda for some reason…) Our favorite theaters are the Kips Bay ones, so it made sense to do it. As we left last night, there were quite a few people showing up…so Tuesdays have become quite popular. Much more popular now that MoviePass has had issues…. We only go if we are interested in something.

I’m a sucker for a dark rose but none I have tried compare to NdN for me. I love the bits of saffron and vanilla. You can pick out other notes, but the rose is still the star. My uncle grew roses when i was growing up- he had a huge garden of hybrid teas and there was one- Mr. Lincoln- that was a deep red and so fragrant. Every time I wear NdN I think of Mr. Lincoln and my uncle’s roses for some reason!

Also I think it’s so sexy, it’s one of my go-to date night perfumes. My fiance always compliments me when I wear it and believe me, compliments from him are sparse when it comes to fragrance, as I’m always trying something new. But we both love this one.

          Sorry for the novel ha!

Mirror Mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all?

Why? I circumvented the CP by looking at my diptyque Volutes EDT bottle in the mirror. See, this is when a d is really a b. Hair-credit at least? Extra credit for creativity?

    Commuting Woe No. 455 (?):
As chaotic as my commutes tend to be, I balance it by using them as my mental quiet time. I try not to engage in any conversation with anyone with the exception of my sister if I happen to see her or a co-worker if we walked to the train station together and we already have a conversation going. Anyway, quite a while back, this one woman decided she wanted to befriend me (feeling not mutual) and try to get information from me. I always answered her vaguely because certain things are none of her business. For example: “That’s a nice piece of fancy jewelry, and wow, your earrings match so they must be from the same set. Where did you buy them and how much did you pay?” Hmmm, really. I just waved my hand and said “The mall, but I don’t remember what they cost.” For several months, she sought me out until finally, I started taking a different train due to a new work location. I would occasionally see her at the train station but would deliberately walk around her. Fast forward to today, she and a friend of hers went through several cars and saw 2 empty seats beside me, I didn’t even look up and was a little surprised to hear a “Hi, I haven’t seen you in a long time! How have you been?” I bet Deva could hear my groan clear across the country! I just said busy..nothing new and pointedly tapped my phone. I hope she got the message because she turned to her friend and started talking to her. I swear she better not be looking for me next time because it won’t take much for me to tell her to go away!

Is the Bouquet Imperiale a carnation scent?

Hello Jalapeno, nope. I can’t detect carnation on my skin. I detect geranium, lavender, cedar and tonka. The hubby doesn’t care for lavender so I save that one for ‘spray at work’ only.
        Have you tried this one?

No, I haven’t. But my mind jumped to carnations when I read “fresh and a touch spicy”. That’s exactly how I remember carnations smelling like when I was little. Funny what kind of associations we can have with certain things, isn’t it?

It’s the Extra Vieille that has the carnation note that’s prominent.
When I re-spritzed this afternoon, I really smelled the cedar note.

I must add, it has surprising staying power for a cologne concentration. I was lucky to purchase a few of the soaps from Andre at Jacquelline Perfumery (in SF) before he closed shop.

Since we’re back to warmer temps and high humidity today, I broke out my new decant of Satori with much appreciation to ElisaP! Love, Love, Love it! Satori really shines in humid weather.

I’m back home in hot humid Houston and wearing Ormond Jayne Orris Noir today, just because it’s what I pulled out of my sample drawer. It’s serving me quite well thank you. Trying to get some medical appointments arranged for myself as well as doing more things for my mom via long distance. It was exhausting trying to help her accommodate to the new senior living apartment. One morning I discovered she had put away a big package of peanut butter cups into the top rack of the dishwasher. Worrisome; perhaps she mistook it for the fridge. At least so far she’s doing well taking care of the gentle cat I took up there to live with her and he’s in heaven being the king of the realm there.

I rather like the image of the day, Robin! I’m also liking the fact that our daystar graced me with its presence today, or at least part of it. Need more sunshine, please! ????????????

SOTD = Byredo Flowerhead, from the sample stash and a generous NSTer. Humid warm days call for florals like this one. ????????????????????????????????

On me it’s a beachy floral with a little hint of camphor, which I rather like. However, for me the grande dame of this kind of scent is Guerlain Terracotta. It has a little more depth and complexity than Flowerhead does, IMO.

Flowerhead didn’t work for me either. IIRC, the floral is lovely but the incense note was too much for me. It’s like some squished two incompatible scents together. Gave me a head cake. ????????

Hmmmmmmm, no incense for me at all with Flowerhead. It sounds like this one is very dependent on skin chemistry.

Sorry, I used to get stuck with my-perspiration-smells-like-curry guy every day on the 6:20pm because there was always an empty seat next to him, and I was tired. This was before the advent of cell phones, which I think are MORE irritating. ????????????????????????✌????????

I had to cover my nose several times and then I finally hauled out my mini bottle of White Flower oil – immediate relief. I think I need to find a necklace with a porous stone that I can soak with the oil before leaving home / work.

Hajusuuri, if you’re still here: know you use some La Mer items, and in Nordstrom new beauty arrivals, there’s a limited-ed lip & cheek glow stick. Not sure if you use lip color–like the color myself, but am put off by the description that it “imparts a cooling sensation on the lips.” Not a fan of tingly lips!
Have you tried their regular lip balm?

Ha! Thanks for the heads up! I am not a fan of tingly lips or cheeks. That said, if I get a mini sample, I will try it on the cheeks. I’ve used their regular lip balm in the past but had a reaction to it…although I may have unfairly blamed it as I had visited a farmers’ market the day before. I am allergic to the sap on mango skins which is very similar to poison ivy.

For lips in general, I typically use drug store lip balms, Vaseline or The Body Shop ones…also, anything organic that looks interesting from Whole Foods. My only issue with the organic lip balms is the lack of SPF or organic ones with SPF are usually coconut flavored and I don’t like to taste coconut all day every day.

As to cheeks, I like to use Benefit Posie Tint (a dot on each cheek and on the nose) and High Beam Liquid Highlighter (slightly larger dots than the Posie Tint). I swirl the Posie Tint first before layering on the High Beam. And do note that I only do this while on vacation…most times I just wear foundation and then I’m out the door!
