Wednesday scent of the day 9/19

Posted by Robin on 19 September 2018 336 Comments

Ahoy! ’tis Hump Day, and International Talk Like a Pirate Day! What fragrance be ye wearin?

Me: running late, again, but staying peaceful in my old friend Comme des Garçons Ouarzazate.

Reminder: 9/21 is the International Day of Peace *and* World Gratitude Day. Wear a fragrance that fits.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Hello everyone!

I’m in Kingdom EdP today, from a newly discovered bottle. I sprayed a little the first day I got it, but I haven’t worn it since. While I do agree with Luca Turin that it’s basically Allure with cumin, I really like it. At the same time, I wonder if one could mix new Rochas Femme and Allure together to achieve a similar effect. I’ll report back when I try it.

Also, the bottle is even prettier in person. I wish I could try the parfum, not least for the actually metal bottle. :)

I absolutely will. Maybe when I get home.

I really like “new Femme” but it lasts about an hour on me. Maybe the Allure will help.

I am eating dal at the moment, so technically I have a lot of cumin spice sweating out of me ;)

It’s nice to see Kingdom mentioned – you smell great :)

I still have quite a bit in the bottle I bought back in 2002, or so. I hadn’t fallen down the rabbit hole at that time, but I regularly wore perfume and bought Kingdom because it smelled so different to everything else. That hasn’t changed!

Oh cool! I’m sorry that it’s so expensive now. I absolutely loved the 2006 Missoni but because of the Guide it’s super expensive.

Good morning! I’m trying out Ormonde Jayne Ta’if from a swap meet sample. It’s extremely pretty, maybe too much so for work. It would be a nice date night perfume, but at this rate one bottle of a single date night perfume will last me at least a decade :-(

Expand it to girls night out perfume, dinner party perfume, weekend shopping at Costco perfume etc.! I know what you mean – I own several great evening out scents (my fave being Seville A L’aube) but they don’t get a whole lot of wear.

Second this! I remember when I read The Guide’s review of El Attarine and thought, “I’ve definitely worn this to the laundromat.” I get why they said what they said but it makes me happy, in a tux or in my jeans. :)

It’s so beautiful, really. I wish I had bought a bottle years ago, before I got nervous about reformulations. It’s my favorite of the Serge Lutens jellientals.

Ta’if is one of my all-time perfume loves, and I wear it for special occasions. But it’s so beautiful that I would have invited those occasions just to wear it.

Definitely in my Top 10. I initially thought it was too much for work but had the most amazing compliment from a female coworker when I wore a spritz one day—- so don’t worry, it’s doable for work unless you work in a no perfume place*.

      * if you work in a place that doesn’t allow perfume, you should quit. Life is too short. Haha

I’m quite sure you mean Ouarrrrrrrzazate!

I had the most marvelous dream last night, in my favorite genre I Discover a Fabulous Perfume Estate That Is Somehow All Mine. In this one a long-lost wealthy relative had left my family a dusty old mansion. As everyone else was divvying up the furniture and crystal, I discovered a huge trove of impossible-to-find vintage perfumes that no one else wanted. It was hard to wake up from. In its spirit, I am wearing vintage Crepe de Chine parfum. It’s new to me and I gotta say, I would kick No. 5 out of bed for this one.

    sampling sylvaine delacourte helicriss

I like it. I forced myself to think about it and guess some notes before I looked it up, I came up with: coriander, bright sun hay and leather.

If you are not a fan of white musk of course I can see how you would not be interested in any from this line, but I find it very alluring and keep smelling my wrist.

Bletch on the cold! I agree with some of the other posters… lots of green tea. Feel free to add as much lemon and honey as you like. The honey and lemon can also be used to make a hot lemonade, which is good for soothing sore throats. ???? Get well soon!

Thanks Jalapeno. You know, with my new and apparently forever sinus problems, I started drinking lots of tea. Problem is, I don’t really like them. But after cm8, mentioned green tea, I gave it a try, and am enjoying it. I really should get some lemon though.

Argan & Birch Body cream (rum and vanilla in there so I am somewhat on theme plus it was a gift from a generous NSTer so I am grateful for that)

one wrist is English Oak & Hazelnut paired with Blackberry & Bay
other wrist is English Oak & Hazelnut paired with Myrrh & Tonka

loving both of these combos but all three travel sprays will be Christmas gifts for the youngest Marzipan…just testing them out of him ;)

That’s so funny, I should start gifting my daughter perfume that we can share. She has a little collection of celebrity scents, and I gave her a few I don’t wear anymore. One day I found my Gucci Rush in her room, and I had to swipe it back.

BV Eau Legere is softer and more luminous then the original BV. The leather note is toned done and it lacks patchouli ( a huge plus in my book!!!). The florals are a little more pronounced. Overall it is more feminine and easier to wear. I hope this helps! :)

    Love me a hump day!
Just back from work in Vegas where it was sweltering hot. Very happy with my 70s temps in NYC.

While there I got a sample of Bottega Veneta Knot Eau Absolue which is really quite lovely. It’s got amber added to the original Knot making it, more intense! Wouldn’t mind a 30ml of this one.

Is anyone else disturbed by how empty malls are these days? I was in Fashion Show Mall on the strip and was literally the only shopper in Nordstroms. Neiman Marcus was another ghost town. I would think in a place like Vegas you’d see a lot more shoppers but that wasn’t the case when I was there. I guess I’m of the minority that prefers in-person shopping vs. online. I appreciate store displays, seeing and touching stuff, and not having to return via mail!

    SOTD: Knot Eau Absolue

Malls are definitely taking a hit. Here in Houston there are so many “dead malls” in the suburbs. That just means low rent for local businesses, luckily!

Our main mall, though, is always packed to the gills.

Yes, it’s dispiriting. Maybe the upside is people are spending less time on shopping as recreation? Also, in principle I like real stores; in practice, I’d have to have to have homes in NYC at a minimum, to be able to shop where the things I like are sold — and then I wouldn’t have any shopping money left.

Places doing well in the DC Metro area include Tysons Corner (mainly due to visitors from overseas, though) and the Mosaic District, where Arielle Shoshana is located (a shopping and restaurant district, not an indoor mall, that seems to attract many young people, and some of all ages.

Retail is definitely having hard time. While I also prefer “in person” shopping, the assortment of things in B&M stores around where I live is so inferior to what online shopping even from the same brands/department stores’ sites that have their presence in our malls offer, that often I use those stores for returns only. With big stores I always check whether what I want is in stock in one of the stores locally to avoid shipping (even when it’s free). And 9 out of 10 times it isn’t.

There are 3 shopping malls within a 20 minute drive of where I live, and only 1 of them is doing well. One is defunct, and ought to be demolished, and the second one has had some high profile closings in it over the past couple of years. Not sure what is going to happen with that one.

Re: Las Vegas, the last time I was in the Fashion Show Mall, it didn’t have much in the way of pedestrian traffic, and this was back in the early 1990’s.

It really was eerie being the only one in the beauty section in both dept. stores. At least the SAs didn’t “attack” me as I’m sure they’re desperate for sales and just customers to interact with.

Arrr! I feel comfortable in the glow of the friendship of NSTers today.

Wearing Palissandre d’Or today from the swapmeet :) It’s slightly marred by the ripe smell of my wrist brace–tips on how to wash it properly? Maybe add vinegar to the soapy water? Yuck.

PdO is really beautiful (I didn’t know rosewood smelled so lovely!), but it really quiets down very quickly. Maybe I needed more sprays.

yep–you could soak in some vinegary water before washing. Or bury it in a bag of clean cat litter or baking soda for a while–that can absorb some of the ick. (I’d try that as a first step.)

Oh that’s a good idea! I might skip the cat litter and use baking soda, though; clean cat litter (slightly metallic?) has its own odor that I CANNOT STAND, possibly because of the mental associations I have between it and cat…poop.

(I am amused that you felt the need to specify clean cat litter, as though I might get confused and grab a handful out of the litterbox :) Yuck yuck yuck!)

I need serious good vibes today, friends. My fiance got laid off yesterday. The company he works for is closing their flight ops in Albuquerque. Their last day is November 9th (he will get a months severance). They say they are going to open positions in Phoenix where the company’s flight ops are based and they are welcome to apply to those and they are somewhat guaranteed they’ll get it, but we just moved here a year ago and bought a house in January, which we love. We are so upset. We don’t want to live in Phoenix (no offense to anyone who does). He’s already applying to jobs here in NM but uuuggghhh I hate uncertainty. Super stressed today.

In Shalimar because it’s just comforting to me.

Trying to inject happiness into a stressful and busy day with roses. Showered with Rose Jam shower gel and am wearing Rose Jam perfume. I used rosewater toner and rose face cream. After I posted here about an overwhelming workload yesterday, my coworker and I got even more work of an urgent nature, so it’s a challenging time.

Last night I tried the new Jo Malone Honeysuckle & Davana. I think I overapplied because it was one of those soaked cotton pads attached to a glossy flyer. Whew it singed my nostrils and it didn’t help that I already have sensitive sinuses at the moment. I had to scrub it off, and when I sniffed it I didn’t detect any recognizable honeysuckle note. It just seemed like a mainstream perfume floral blend. It may not be fair to judge it with fatigued sinuses and overapplication, but I do not care to smell it again!

      Funny story about Chanel 19:
My somewhat clueless dad used to get my mom, my sister and I generic xmas gifts from Army and Navy year after year. One year we each got exactly the same umbrella and a towel that had “delta hotels” printed on it. We let him know that although useful, these gifts were not very appealing to female humanoids. The next year my sister got Chanel 5 lotion and I got Chanel 19 talcum powder. Dear ol dad really brought it!

For those who are curious about Siberian deer musk pods (caveat: these are actual furry animal parts), Ensar Oud has a making of video for Ensar Oud No. 2, an artisanal musk perfume:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=5&v=LmzZ6CTvk_c

Also includes shots of the Moscow metro, leather crafting, and a Russian singer’s rendition of “It’s My Life.” The rectangular metal can they open at one point is genuine 1980s Mysore sandalwood.

Of the EO perfumes that I’ve sampled so far, I liked Monsieur Oud best. EO 1 is also worth trying. Luckyscent carries a subset of the offerings from this brand. I’ve ordered from them directly, and everything has arrived safely from overseas.

    No affiliation with either brand.

It is a rainy day where I am and I needed a little SL Fleurs d’Oranger. I’m also trying to hold onto the feeling of summer just a bit longer. I bought lots of good things at the farmers’ market this morning: grape sized tomatoes, pears, apples, ground cherries and pumpkin cookies with white chocolate chips. I’ll share a few things with a neighbor.

It has 3 travel atomizers 0.7 oz (20 ml) each. I am thinking about offering 2 of those for the upcoming splitmeet in October. Do you guys think anyone will be interested?
Kids have no school today, so we are cleaning the house and hitting local park in the late afternoon.

Can I piggy back on this question – I am very attracted to the twist and spray atomizers and was wondering if anyone had any experience with them at all? They look very cool.
Btw., not sure if this is useful or helpful, but they were a bit cheaper in the airport duty free (saw them in Dublin, would assume similar prices in other EU countries?) – I think 73 euros for that set.

I’m sampling Parle Moi De Parfum today. I have One Tonne de Roses, Guimauve de Noel, Falvia Vanilla, Cedar Woodpecket, Milky Musk and Woody Perfecto all over my body. I’m not familiar with the nose Michel Almairac but this is supposedly his own independent outfit?

Some of them are nice, but if i’m honest i smelt all of this before in other niche houses and designer scents. Its hard to be original and distinctive in the current perfume climate.

Thanks for your observations, gunmetal24! I really love the name of this brand and its perfumes, but haven’t tried any yet.

Michel Almairac is quite prolific and may well have done some of the similar perfumes that you’ve smelled before:

      https://nstperfume.com/perfumers-a-to-e/michel-almairac/

I haven’t smelled most of these, but Gucci Rush, Armani Prive Bois d’Encens, and L’AP Voleur de Roses were very distinctive. Those were the days!

I have to say I love the fact that my birthday falls on Int’l Talk Like a Pirate Day. The family greetings always amuse.

Celebration includes an afternoon show of Smokey and the Bandit and dinner across the street at a nice restaurant. It opened a couple of years ago, and we keep saying we should splurge and try it. So…tonight it is. Interestingly, they have a “no tipping” policy.

Have sprayed Le Temps d’une Fête with abandon. It was my signature in a prior formulation and, given the name, suits the day.

Spent the afternoon yesterday with a friend’s mom in the waiting room at NYU hospital (friend was having surgery.) A pleasant day despite getting caught in the deluge.

Anyway, I mention it in case anyone else has seen the fabulous new sculpture that went up over the summer. Spot. I only really saw him out of the corner of my eye and then on the bus, but I will go back for a closer look. Fabulous. Check out the link below. A HUGE Dalmatian balancing a taxi on its nose.

My sister is visiting to take over care of our mother for a few weeks; she got here yesterday so today is my first true day off from everything in six months. I am wearing vintage Shalimar extrait because I can! I have a Nicholas Sparks novel, I’m watching Parks and Rec on Netflix, had a peanut butter sandwich and a cold beer for lunch and I have a nap planned with my large furry cat. The bar for relaxation is set very low chez ringthing. Arghh!

Picked up my knitting again for the fall, planning ahead for xmas presents. Gotta sort out my yarn stash and see what i can make with what i have.
Good thing i buy 95% of clothes and furniture at thrift stores, the way i spend on yarn, skincare/lipstick, and perfume ????????????

Another beautiful spring morning here, and I’m wearing clothes that I haven’t worn for a few months. I’m wearing a cream jacket with black roses, so a rose perfume is definitely called for. Nahema, I think.

    SotD = Hiris

I’m on a Hermes kick at the moment. And I’m wearing a cobalt blue and white tunic over white jeans today, so Hiris feels perfect.

I couldn’t figure out why KUSC was playing music from a Pirates of the Caribbean movie this morning. Thanks for reminding me why today is special, Robin.

Argh and avast! You be a fine smellin’ crew.

I would like to like Hermes but I get zippo longevity…far worse even than the Jo Malones or Ateliers. I have a few samples laying around so I might test by lavish sprays on my clothes rather than skin next time.

Goodbye Picadilly for my day as a small celebratory not to NZ’s 125th anniversary of women’s suffrage, as learned from Kanuka yesterday.

And then some of Beaufort’s Coeur de Noire after swimming. It seemed like the best fit for pirates–it’s got a bad ass seafaring swagger vibe to it. And the name, of course.

Though today would not a a day to be on the high seas. We had full gale force winds. Even in the city, it was gusting up to 60mph.

Aaargh would be the opposite of Silences. You smell good! I may wear it for my work at home day tomorrow. I was supposed to be off today and tomorriw prior to leaving for DC on Friday (for a 4-day trio) but there was too much work to do. I need to pack and the no commute helps.

Did you Chergui today? I did!

If you see something, say something. Surprisingly, this is not related to a commuting woe. The mall I go to has a 2nd level where the inside perimeter is lined with 4 ft. glass panels anchored at each end by steel frames and side rails anchors to structural posts. When I came out of s store, I saw a heavy-set guy leaning against a glass panel. All of a sudden, he popped off, looked to his left, then to his right, then quickly walked away. I speculated that he either heard or felt something crack. I went to Customer Service to let them know what U saw. I hope they took me seriously and checked the condition of that section of the mall!

I went back to Custoner Service twice! First time there was no one there. I went up to a store to hang out for a little bit, told the SA who did not seem to be alarmed. I did not trust her to do the right thing either so I went back and spoke to the person who got back behind the counter.

I hope you feel better soon lillyjo. I’ve been fighting off the crud recently too.
PD uses high quality ingredients and their scents are beautifully made. Not sure if you’re missing out, I have really classic taste, they may not do anything for you. I was actually relieved to get the Champagne association because I have a vintage bottle. Phew! Money saved!

It is late so I’ll just add YAY for World gratitude Day- I cannot wait until Friday now…isnt it also our autumnal equinox?
The female hummingbirds will leave us on the east coast in a matter of days. . It is a big deal to me – they are my mother’s spirit animal. My sweet mom died a year ago tomorrow. How odd the coincidence of timing. It is a profound loss that you will carry forever because maternal love is a very powerful and priceless gift.

I will wear a petfume in her honor, either her 1st Love, l’Air d’ Temps (vintage) or her most recent favorite Au Dela.

You will smell beautiful in either choice. A mother’s love is irreplaceable. My mom loves hummingbirds too and I think that will be her spirit animal someday too. A great big hug as you remember your mother tomorrow.

Like She-ra said, either way, you will smell as you remember your sweet mom. Coincidentally re: hummingbirds, my brother and SIL love them as well. They deliberately picked and planted plants known to attract hummingbirds. He recently shared pictures of hummingbirds in flight as their scheme to attract them worked!
