Wednesday scent of the day 9/12

Posted by Robin on 12 September 2018 268 Comments

Hump Day and Chocolate Milkshake Day. And don't forget the swapmeet is still open! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Eau Cerise.

Reminder: on 9/14, wear one of your "top 10 of fall" fragrances (unless it's spring where you are, in which case wear one of your "top 10 of spring" scents).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I am wearing Coco Madamoiselle. It is very predictable but nice.

A student and her mom gave it to me after I complimented her mom wearing when she came in to volunteer. I usually go out of my way to compliment any perfume I smell in public. There are so many “I am allergic/don’t like it” voices out there. I am trying to add my one small voice to the side of scent being beautiful.

(yes I do know there are true allergies and I never wear any to Dr. offices)

I like to compliment a woman’s perfume from time to time, but as a man, I try to be as unobtrusive and gentle as possible.

I feel similarly inhibited about complimenting a man. Once I was walking behind a man on campus and he smelled so good, I really wanted to ask him! He was of another nationality and ethnicity and I feared it might seem too weird, so I didn’t, but I was truly curious about what it was he had on.

I have been in the same situation. I was walking behind a man, maybe he was middle eastern? He smelled so amazing and his cologne was very spicy smelling but I was to shy to say anything. I went out of my way to walk an extra block behind him..anything that makes the streets of NYC smell that good…

I went to the theater Sunday and the man infant of me had a fabulous scent. I figured his girlfriend might not like a stranger complimenting him on their date though.

Coco Mademoiselle is a lovely scent. I wish it worked on me. I love to smell it on others.

I am going to give Coco Mademoiselle Intense a proper try next time I am shopping. Maybe that version will suit my chemistry better.

I find the Intense quite syrupy and very heavy on the tonka – especially in the dry down. It’s almost Coco Angel.

There are little peaks of sun coming thru the gray skies that have been lurking here for five days; so I’m brightening it up with Olfactive Studio’s Flashback. Vetiver, Citrus and RHUBARB. ????

      Flashback is an amazing scent!
It’s cool and warm, and sharp and soft. It’s just yummy.
I have had people comment on it, thinking it was a man’s scent,
but I love it for it complexity and it’s uplifting energy.
I think I’ll wear it today!

I’ve been wearing Knize Ten for several years, including the past 10 days. For me, it was an acquired taste. I wouldn’t be without it now but at first I was pretty confused. Everyone says it’s a “leather” but I find lots of carnation in it. I suggest you may wish to try a sample.

My experience in loaning to Knize Ten (which I love) to guy friends was that it does not work on every skin, and not everyone loves it even when it behaves on their skin. I would recommend sampling.

Wearing Branch & Vine, and a dab of Eau De Strawberry Yogurt I Spilled on My Shirt. What a morning! Forgot to set my alarm, made it out of the house in 12 minutes, drove to work instead of a nice peaceful bus ride, got here and immediately dropped pink yogurt on my dark shirt. I’m still not sure I’m awake.

Thank goodness for my desk stash of samples. Branch & Vine is REALLY growing on me, to the point where I might need a mini, although to me it also smells like fruit punch sometimes.

I am totally with you. I woke up late (I forgot to reset my alarm) and had about 15 minutes to get to work. Because I live in such a tiny town, I was able to stop for cold caffeine and still made it to work on time. My cats didn’t get their breakfast, but they have kibble so they should be fine.

I’m in Boucheron by Boucheron. Despite getting a 5-star review, for some reason I avoided it and actually thought out would be terrible. Then I found a mini of it! It’s sublime, in a synthetic 80’s way. I had to get a bottle, since it’s not very expensive. I actually prefer it to Samsara (at least the newer, screetchy versions). The narcissus and ivy heart is just phenomenal.

    Have a great day all!

Current Samsara anyway. I have some older clear bottles and those are like jewels. But when it went into those red bottles, Samara became very very scratchy to me.

Synthetic 80s at its most classy. I wonder if someone on the design side was intentionally ironic with the imitation gem bottles, or was that just the 80s…

Musty/syrupy? Wow. Do you think the bottle turned?

The aldehydes have turned on my bottle, but in the dry down, I get an orange blossom, ylang ylang, and tuberose over an incense base. Very serene and meditative.

I got back from vacation yesterday to find several packages awaiting me. I have all my packages delivered to work instead of home, since I am mostly at work. One of my packages was my Scentbird pick for September, Amouage Bracken Woman. The herbal nature of this reminds me of Silences, in a good way. At least I can afford Silences.

    Chanel no. 19 EDT today.

On Sunday I dropped into Lush to pick up a mask (FOMO jelly mask – my magic bullet against redness) and, while there, I sampled Rentless on a whim. I’m not a big fan of patchouli-forward scents in general, and I didn’t buy it at the time, but since then I cannot. Stop. Thinking. About it. Sooo, I’m planning on going back to purchase (the solid version) today! I can see it getting heavy use this fall.

    OJ Woman ????????????

Eeking out another wearing from the .5 ML sample I ordered from my first big order from surrender to chance

It’s so good! It really smells like “amber” to me, I was surprised to look at all the notes, reminds me of Ambre Sultan

My first associations with this one is green and forest, but it does have something resionous in the dry-down.

    In Mona di Orio Chamarre.
This is a “purple” scent and somehow sad. But beautiful.
Reminds me of funeral scenes in Italian movies: beautiful women wearing black veils and chic black clothes.

I starts out a bit perfumey (?aldehydes/chanel no 5), but over in a flash. Then lavender, violet-iris and the drydown is listed as ambery, but there is a little touch or “feel” of suede.
Colin Maillard on basenotes likens it to a powdery neo classic statue illuminated by moonlight. I would place this statue in a garden with lots of lavender, but the garden would have to be a formal and sad place like a cemetery.

PS The lavender isn’t brash or barbershop.
More like the smell of lavender in a garden (the purple, warm waft) -not crushed or herbal.

SOTD is an unlabelled sample that smells of the Atlantic ocean and I love it because it reminds me of a toned down version of Aramis New West for Women which I wore eons ago when no one was making acquatics

New West was so good. I had a mini with shimmer in it, that I think was an oil, and the big spray bottle. The mini turned pretty quick though.

That’s insane, I guarantee that composition didn’t hold up well. Also, there was a reform, I believe in the late nineties, that was noticeably different to me.

My opinion is that SM is an exercise in the olfactory power of suggestion.
I have a sample, have sprayed on skin from a friend’s bottle, and it is a metallic floral that MAYBE smells faintly like blood tastes.
PG-13 comment: I DO NOT smell semen.

I’m currently wearing Wood Sage and Sea Salt. Just hanging out around the house waiting for the hurricane, so of course it’s a beautiful sunny day. Heading to yoga soon and will probably switch to Passage D’Enfer after my shower.

My husband decided we needed a theme cocktail for Hurricane Florence, so he came home with Negroni fixings last night. (It was invented in Florence.). I’d never had one before – they’re wonderful! How have I gone so long without this yummy cocktail in my life?

If I close my eyes and sniff, I think of lemon and vanilla pudding that is being cooked on the stove, which is sitting on a big fluffy cloud. If it had a different name, I would not have associated it with the original. Stays pretty close to the skin. I bought the Peacock bottle from a discounter, and I really enjoy it.

Both are very nice…I prefer the Diptyque overall…more interesting and complex to my nose. But while there is some overlap they are different beasts and the Fragonard is lovely in its own right…and far cheaper…$26 for 50 ml at Beautyhabit (no affiliation)…quite the steal. This is the Diptyque bottle w/ the bulb atomizer too which annoys me to no end.

My slyvaine delacourte vanilla discovery set arrived yesterday and I have been enjoying testing some of it (I think some other NSTers are too? Maybe kpaint?)
I loved Virgile which is described as an “aromatic vanilla” and has cedar notes. To me it’s a less synthetic cousin of my beloved Lune Feline. It smells like a very good body lotion – I mean that as a compliment.
Valkyrie is described as a “fresh vanilla” and was too sweet for me but also very natural smelling. Will report on the others in the set as I try them.
I was happy to learn that Delacourte was behind some of my favorite Guerlains during her time there, including Cuir Beluga and L’instant as creative director.

Chanel Sycamore today, the EdP version that I bought earlier this year. Unlike most, I did not care for the original version but really like the EdP.

This is the first fall that I’ve had Sycamore around. It’s a candidate for my fall top ten, but there is heavier competition in that category than any other season.

Also, I find it a bit on the masculine side. I’m planning to generously enable, er, I mean, loan it to a guy friend to test. ;-)

Bonus: speaking of *original* Sycamore, here is the Bois de Jasmin review comparing the 2008 and 1920 versions:

      https://boisdejasmin.com/2008/04/sycomore-chanel.html

I wonder if the EdP is any closer to the 1920 original. To me, it’s almost not a vetiver and does have more sandalwood. What it reminds me of is one of the old school Hermes masculines, such as Bel Ami or Equipage. I always eventually find those a bit harsh, and Sycamore is an improvement in that sense.

Fascinating observation by Octavian in a comment on the Grain de Musc review of Sycomore:

“vetiver and grapefruit notes like methyl pamplemousse were allways good friends. even the natural oil depending on the source might have this kind of notes. The same frendship is true for pineapple and galbanum (from Dynascone to AAG plus the naturals).
But vetiver played a major role in many classics of feminine perfumery. Used either as vetiver oil Bourbon, vetiveril acetate, vetivenol and all kind of products derived from the oil. It’s important in the soft woody note (powdery) of chypre aldehydic perfumes. I like this note in Crepe de Chine, Arpege, Ma griffe, Djedi. Vetiver + orris and powdery notes gave the very famous base Vetyrisia, present in many classic products.”

You know I WANT to smell Vetyrisia now!!!

Or maybe hundreds — apparently, Firmenich still sells it (although it must have changed over the decade).

          One source describes it thus:

An ambivalent material as its name suggests. Iridescent, somewhere between violet and woods with vetiver notes and some mentholic sparkle along the way.

I prefer the EDP to the EDT too and wore it on Monday, as it is also fall to me and we actually had a fall like day. I do get vetiver from it, but agree there are other things going on too. It’s not like wearing Hemingway (!), which I did last night. I really like it, but it is definitely masculine insofar as I agree to gender scents!

Good to know I’m not alone, Amy!

Reviews of the original talk about hazelnut, but to me this one smells like it has tobacco, which was, interestingly, one of the 1930 Sycomore’s notes.

Have you ever come across any interesting articles about Benzoin? I noticed a runner with yellow/ brown stained skin and strapping tape yesterday ( tincture of benzoin used to increase stickiness ) and have been thinking about it ever since. I can’t remember if you were looking into sandalwood but there has been one or two articles in the Fiji Times about surveying and marking the sandalwood plantations in an attempt to get back into the market. The original trees were almost wiped out when Pacific sandalwood was traded with the Chinese for tea back in the day.

I haven’t researched benzoin yet. Based on your observation, I wonder if benzoin is why so many oud accords smell like bandaids?

I was sniffing some scrumptious real sandalwoods from Ensar Oud. Just heavenly! It’s wonderful to hear about Pacific sandalwood plantations.

I remember seeing an article about Guerlain’s sandalwood plantation in Indonesia. There was a delightful photo of Thierry Wasser out in the field with the little sandalwood saplings wearing an untucked shirt, khakis (IIRC), and trainers. Such a different image of that true dandy!

    Hello all!

    1) Please be safe SE coastal areas!

    2) Am in Boucheron, my happy fall and winter big 80s fragrance.

    3) Mini movie review: Saw Black Klansman, a brilliant mix of comedy and pathos, with a heartbreaking coda at the end. Entire cast is brilliant and deserve serious consideration for Oscar season. I mean, go see it! *throws up hands*

Also: The Little Stranger, the second movie with Domnhall Gleason that SUUUUCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKEED this year. At least with the first one I know he made his coin; The Little Stranger is a smaller, more intense film. It has been badly marketed as a horror film; it’s a Gothic drama- one that examines the toxicity of class systems, male privilege and the ever so evergreen Cracks In British Reserve ™
    Which, OK?
But here is the thing: we gotta care about somebody, we (the audience) has to have a connection. And I could not give a darn about ANY of these people, save poor Lord Ayres in the beginning and even then I could not sustain my interest or care. Gleason is protagonist as monster, but due to poor pacing and bad movie beats you kinda get irritated with him and wish he would go (expletive) off to a city and show his worth since is literally better than any of the people in the house. The reason why he sticks around is reveal in the last scene, which SUUUUUUCCCCCCCCKKKKKSSSSS but still I wanted everyone to die.
    Don’t go see Little Stranger.

Now, I wanna read the book- because as poorly paced as the movie is, it had a LOT OF THINGS TO SAY.
The casting is brilliant but the audience empathy in the film was only ever with poor Lord Ayres.

Gleason, being model level thin, looks great in his English country clothing I must say.

Ruth Wilson is the BOMB and she inhabits her roles with such wonderful energy. But that was not exploited here; pacing and beats REALLY diluted her role. Honestly, with better editing on the script AND post production she would be a contender for awards season.

    SOTD = Diptyque Volutes EDP

I was inspired by what Robin wore on Monday. Sweet resinous tobacco — so good.

The saga of the unauthorized use of my credit card to purchase over $2,000 worth of audio equipment. I was “asked to approve” said charge on Monday when I’m fact, the charge already went through two weeks ago. The company immediately closed the card as soon as I said it’s unauthorized (of course I thought it was in the midst of happening so Inwas perplexed as to why they couldn’t stop it and now I know why). I did get a FedEx notice mid week almost 2 weeks ago because I was expecting a package but really did not care when it arrived – had I looked at it I would have known something was amiss as my name and address were listed in the Ship to but did not place an order for 22 lbs. of equipment. I got another FedEx notice a few days later but also ignored it because I figured it was a delayed delivery notice – had I looked at it, I would have seen that there was a request made to hold the package at a Walgreens. The 3rd notice was a delivery issue as whoever ordered it did not pick it up (or was unable to since I had the tracking number and the person did not … it is required to pick up the item). The package is now on its way back to the audio equipment company. The credit card had been in my possession at all times so this had to have been harvested online. I’ll probably stop by that Walgreens to observe how things work there. Not sure if the police will be involved – I asked the CSR and all he said was it is up to the fraud department — I don’t have much confidence though. More to come …

Yikes, I often ignore Fedex notices because I’m afraid they might be phishing attempts rather than genuine. I also had purchases I did not make show up on my debit card a few months ago. It was never out of my hands, and I don’t use it in ATMs, either.

One useful thing I learned in dealing with my credit card’s fraud department is that scammers will often test a month or so in advance with very small charges (to test/establish a precedent with computerized screening, I think, and see if the card owner is paying attention). I hadn’t been scanning such small charges carefully in my statements, so they got me.

They also take advantage of how we are used to how vendor names can be somewhat cryptic in statements. If you see one that is all numbers, that is a scam.

Good luck, Hajusuuri, and thanks for letting us know about this.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I do scan my statements but will go back again to see if I see something fishy.

Years ago, when STC came about after the company-owners split the business, STC appeared on statements as if it was a triple x company. I called my credit card company and they said it was for STC. I let STC know and, while it may not have been the result of my note to STC, their name became more normal.

i have been enjoying watching the leaves on the trees unfurl . There is a large chestnut tree in the graveyard and its leaves started out very limp, so each cluster looked like a wonderful pointed handkerchief skirt. Now they are plumping up slowly, giving each cluster lift, as if someone is slowly raising an umbrella . I find myself just standing and staring. New leaves are a kind of virgin green that amazes me. Wearing Weleda rose deodorant as a body spray layered over Gabrielle…a lovely combination.

That’s my ‘local’ beach – Allans Beach where the Hoiho (rare yellow eyed penguin live). The really great thing is that the director of Otago Museum, Ian Griffin, is an astronomer and spends his nights watching stars and aurora and now many locals are really into the stars and keen to make our town a night sky/dark city (changing street lights). I don’t have a good view south from my house so rarely see aurora unless I go out looking. Usually the sky looks green and purple to the naked eye but far more vivid when long exposure photography is involved. Ian Griffin has a great twitter feed.

Lavandes Trianon again today, because it grew on me yesterday and while we’ll still hit the upper 70ies today, it feels more fall-like now somehow and I’m in no mood for citrus.
I shout out to all parents of young children who still have to regularly wake up at night for this, that, or the other – we mostly have outgrown that phase, but last night we had a small-ish guest come in, the dog decided there was no better time for a good paw lick than the middle of the night, and the small-ish guest followed me to her bedroom when I abandoned the family bed. How did we do it all these years?

Right now I am wearing Winter Woods from a small sample vial, enjoying every second of it!

Current and also new obsession: nail polish.
I finally managed to grow my nails. (Yes, been biting and chewing on them my whole live)
So now I am trying all sorts of colours and brands. I feel like I have some catching up to do ????????

Oh and the whole summer I refrained from buying new samples. I tried to enjoy my fb’s more and to drain some vials from my ahem….Himalaya of samples.
But yesterday I could not longer resist, I ordered some Zoologist samples. I was, of course, triggered by their new release Tyrannosaurus Rex, made by Gardoni! (i am a big fan of MAAI and MEM)

        YUP, works for me too!

        I love purples and greens

And of all the brands I tried so far, no one offers consistent quality for all releases. But I think Essie is doing a pretty good job on average, especially at that price.

I already told you I fell in love with the brand AGL right? Good looking AND comfortable, with practical heel height and not too small. Also, look for it in sale/discounted, because its not cheap. :(

I hope you can use that gift card soon!
I love to shop fall and winter outfits, because they are mostly more in colours I love (dark reds and greens, grey, black).

The gift card is for this store called french soles. No affiliation https://www.frenchsoleshoes.com

I will check out AGL when there is a sale.

Oh ballet flats are so cute!

I have one pair of pretty flats but sometimes I slip out of it :(
It probably has to do with my feet shrinking half a size in colder weather. When its hot it hardly happens.

I’ll be ordering a sample of TRex soon and I’d be interested in your thoughts on it. I’ve enjoyed sampling all of the Zoologist line, even when they’re definitely not for me.

I only tried Bat so far. Interesting and well made, but not something Id wear that often.

Yes I’ll let you know what I think about TRex :)
But I really dont know when it will arrive (from Canada to Europe…)

Rather late to the party, wearing Neela Vermiere Trayee today. I absolutely love it but had gyros for lunch and sadly dripped tzatziki on my shirt. The combination isn’t a good one.

Super late as usual. My SOTE is Kelly Caleche edp. I’ve been ignoring this one but pulled it out as I was rearranging my stash from summer to fall scents.

Hope everyone is safe in the wake of Florence.
