Thursday scent of the day 9/6

Posted by Robin on 6 September 2018 291 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday! And I will be celebrating National Coffee Ice Cream Day and Read A Book Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Christian Lacroix Tumulte Pour Homme. I was going to save it until Friday, but Bear was talking about it yesterday so I moved it up. Maybe I'll wear it again tomorrow.

Reminder: on 9/7, wear a fragrance with cedar, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Christian Lacroix Love Who You Want porcelain dessert plates are $180 for the 4, at Maison 24.

    Good morning all!

Just speeding out the door to work, wearing some vintage Nu. I don’t know if it contains cedar (probably not) but it smells like it could? Anyway, I love it, and the bottle, and finding it was a real treat.

You smell great! I love Nu EDP and also adore my funny hockey puck bottle. It could very easily fit in to a top 10 of fall or winter list.

I’ve been hunting down a lot of the weird-sprayer bottles of the 90’s and Nu is so far my favorite bottle. I love the scent too, but it becomes very soft on me.

Two scents with cedar for me today.
Frist I finished my sample of Oh, ooOoh …oh. It’s a nice scent: woods, smoke, bitter herbs. But there is one dirty note I dislike, plus the projection is minimal.

So after about three hours I put on Narciso EDP. Can’t complain about projection of this one!

Lush UK released ten limited edition body lotions. I ordered Lord of Misrule and Avocado No Wash.

I forgot I wanted to ask an opinion for a party perfume. I am attending a party tomorrow and wearing a cocktail dress. I want to wear something that will last and last..and is a bit sexy since I will be with Mr. L.
I had some thoughts: Coco, La Fille De Berlin, Insolence or Tenue de Soiree? Any of these sound good?

SotD = l’air du desert marocain

Woke up thinking of this scent. I love it when that happens, makes the whole day feel dreamy. And laddm has cedar in spades.

LOVE those plates and their sentiment. In my family we joke the giraffe is my daughter’s spirit animal. She was obsessed with giraffes as a little kid. We read books, watched videos, went to the zoo to see them, even feed them. And she’s always had long legs too. Lucky girl. 😀

I hear so much about this scent, is there a place in NYC where they sell Tauer perfumes? I just hate paying for the samples on luckyscent, but I’m getting curious about the brand in general so I might have to order a few.

I think it is easy to forget, as it is only available in the NYC Byredo boutique 😉
I had a friend to buy it for me, who was in NYC last week 🙂

I like that it is not a flowery perfume, tho there is violets in it. But it’s morte earthy.
Another good thing is that it lasts for hours on me…I have heard that people complain about Byredo’s perfumes lasting power..so it’s a good thing 🙂

(I also have Gypsy Water and it lasts a long time on me as well..maybe my skin just agrees with their lasting power? Usually my skin eats perfume like crazy..mmmh..

Still forgetting to pick something with cedar, but loving the magnificent green chypre Mito VdP today.

It’s almost making feel better about how swimming is making my rosacea go absolutely nuts. I look and feel like I have hot blisters on my cheekbones. Ugh. Stupid hormones–I never had rosacea until menopause kicked off its early nonsense.

Ugh, so sorry about the rosacea… I have a mild case. Oddly enough, the thing that makes it flare the worst is Greek-style yogurt. I have found salicylic acid helps…

I’m in Byron Parfums Mula Mula. I really love this but think it will be better in fall/winter. I detect slight, ever so slight, similarities to Aura which is fine with me.

I’ve also occasionally seen Christian LaCroix notebooks and other paper products in similar patterns. First was an airport kiosk a couple of years ago, and on Amazon around the same time. Don’t know if there’s anything out there now, but worth a search.

I tested Puredistance Opardu last night though – very prominent pencil shavings smell from the ceder in this one.

No cedar for me. Will be a long day of work at the office and flights to Alabama this evening. I sprayed At the Beach 1966 to trick myself into thinking I’m relaxing on a beach. It’s working thus far. It does have driftwood, though, so there’s that. 😉 I did pack a few things to chose from to participate tomorrow.

Reading one of those twitter question memes that makes the rounds:

“What 5 items would someone put in a salt circle to summon you

“Mine are chocolate covered cashews, indie perfume samples, a historical romance book, a fall-themed candle, and a cardigan.”

That could result in a very crowded circle, with plenty of NST friends!

In this case, it was @hwhittenwrites, whose tweet was boosted by a reply from J.K. Rowling (no perfume in her answer). 🙂

I doubled up on Eau des Merveilles with the lotion and the perfume. I needed something relaxing and comfortable today, as we finally threw in the towel on the potty training adventure. I lost (spectacularly) a battle of wills with a two year old. We’ll have to try again once we’ve all calmed down, which might be several months 🙂

Sorry to hear about the potty training! We waited until my daughter was nearly 3 (I say “waited” but in reality she refused to sit on the potty) and tried what they call commando potty training, which worked like a charm. We were done in three days, though it was a long three days . . .

I find people’s memories of when they were potty trained themselves or when they successfully trained their now older children get seriously distorted over time (kind of like how the fish you caught that one time gets bigger and bigger with each passing year). So when others tell you that their child or they themselves were potty trained at 18 months, I think you want to add at least 7 months to that number, more if the parent is particularly righteous… When kids are ready, they are ready. Before then – forget it. Easier said then done, I know!

I’ll actually be putting up a bottle of Tumulte Pour Homme for swap this weekend. It’s been languishing in my get-rid-of box for years because I originally intended to sell it in eBay. But I hate selling on eBay, so I’ve basically forgotten about it. Hopefully someone who loves it will want some more!

I’m smelling much better today in Terre d’Hermes. It’s so enjoyable. Another I should wear more often.

Last night when I got home, I gave myself generous sprays from my Shiseido Feminite du Bois bottle to make up for a disappointing scent of the day. I just love that stuff!

Le Labo Baie Rose 26 from a sample I acquired yesterday to replace the one I gave to a friend last year. I really like this one. I debated the basil sesame shower gel which smells sooo good, but decided I have enough shower things for now.
While waiting to be rung up, a young woman (20s?) and her boyfriend were waiting for her purchase to be labeled and done up. When the SA rang it up and said “That’ll be $280(+)” she looked like she was going to pass out. She bought a liquid balm of one of the city ones and something else and thought the city price was the same as the standard lineup. Her boyfriend hesitantly handed over his credit card. I felt kinda sorry for her. I guess the pressure of the whole special label and pomp and circumstance made her feel like it was too late to back out? The SA wasn’t pressuring either. They’re super nice and easy going in the Bklyn store. Anyway, I was disappointed there was nothing new to smell this year.

Yikes, sticker shock! If the price was different than I thought, I would have said sorry, I was under the impression it was x and I am not prepared to spend that.

This is easy: Iunx Splash Forte, which not only has red cedar and “fiery” spices, but also a beautiful cedar-red color.

    http://www.iunx-parfums.com/uk/pages-html-flacons-big/splash-uk.html

This is one of several lines that I regret LT and TS were unable to cover in their 2018 book. I also wish they had reviewed the Bottega Veneta Palladiano series, Thierry Mugler Les Exceptions, the most recent Jean Patou recreations, the Cire Trudon Perfumes, and Aftelier.

I could probably think of more, and it’s just one more indicator of the overload perfume lovers face these days that they could fill an entire book with short reviews (really two, when you consider there’s almost no overlap with their previous book), include so many brands I hadn’t even heard of, and yet there are still these (to me) major omissions — and it’s inescapable.

I think I read – in the guide or perhaps in a Basenotes discussion of the book – that they basically reviewed samples of houses that were willing to send them samples or sent them samples unsolicited. So perhaps some houses deliberately chose not do that?

Access to samples must be part of it, at least. They do thank a couple of stores they spent time in, although that could have been an initial screening, I guess.

Iunx is hard to get, and I haven’t found Palladiano samples from my usual sources, although it would be easy to sniff at a big shopping center near me, I think.

Of course! (if I had to live with only one perfume house for the rest of my life, it would be IUNX, and I could easily do it 🙂 I have the huge bottle of L’Ether, Eau Blanche, and Eau Frappe, and small bottles of Eau Qui Pique and Eau Argentine. +Have tried Eau Baptiste, Sento, Splash Forte and l’Arbre. All of them are fantastic, but if I had to recommend only one, it would probably be Eau Argentine. And this is just because Argentine seems most clearly distinct from any other widely available fragrance by Giacobetti. But again, if you love Giacobetti and have someone going to Paris to fetch you a small bottle/travel (20ml), I don’t think you can go wrong with any of them. Just make sure not to buy only refills without getting the black plastic case (as you cannot spray from a refill bottle on its own). P.S. I should mention that I live in SoCa, and maybe for you people living in colder climates this stuff is too light, that I cannot tell.

I’ve got to find time to read peoples SotD to get cedar ideas. I know I have some, but it’s been so hot I’ve been in other territory. Today Purple Fig, which is refreshing and delicious. I’ve also been loving 19-69 Capri, which I wore Tuesday and about which I haven’t read much. Dryad was yesterday. I really adore it and am worried it will change and that I should stockpile, but I know this is crazy!

Happy almost end of the week to everyone!

Chanel 19 edt for me today, because I missed it 🙂 Oh, and it has a cedar note at the base, but luckily I don’t detect it, as I am not a big fan of cedar.
Off to the grocery store to get some produce and yes, I added coffee ice cream to the list 🙂

    Commuting Woes No. 453:

Guy speaking at the top of his lungs into his cell phone: Every time he wanted to emphasize something (every 2 seconds), he banged his hand on the seat handle. The guy sitting next to me was too cowardly to say anything so I politely asked the guy to stop banging the seat. The first reaction was, what do you mean banging the seat and I just looked down where his hand was as he emphasized his question. OH, THAT! He stopped but really, how could he have been so oblivious? I suspect he wasn’t really talking to anyone and just merely posturing to sound important!

Honestly I didn’t smell any either, but it’s listed in the notes so I went with it. 😉 Regardless you smell great!

A few flights ago, every time the man behind me would stand up for something he would pull on my seat back to hoist himself up. He was a really big guy and so it would yank me back a good bit every single time. I finally said, “Will you PLEASE quit pulling on my seat when you get up?” He looked perplexed but didn’t do it again lol.

At least he stopped! This summer during 8 hour flight the guy that was seating behind me did the very same thing, only he was getting up almost every half hour. When I reached the boiling point I kindly asked him not to pull the back of my seat. His response: ” No I won’t stop! I have health issues!” He was tall 30 + years old very fit man. To top it off, his kids were very noisy and kept arguing and screaming at each other.

I thought of you this morning as I was very annoyed by a woman eating a bag of chips (8am in the morning, mind you) and when she was done she kept folding and unfolding the bag so that we listened to this crinkle/crackle sound for the remainder of the trip. She had her headset on and so she was clueless about the noise. I was sitting 3 seats down from her but it still was bothersome. I leaned over and looked at her a few times but her eyes were closed the whole trip.

Blackberry & Bay is very pretty but has pathetic staying power.

Those plates are really nice but I don’t want any more things to dust. I pared down all the knickknacks and tabletop items in the Great Purge of 2014.

Today I’m wearing Un Bois Vanille. I put on a lot before I remembered I have chorus rehearsal tonight and they are vehemently anti-scent. (No dryer sheets! No scented shampoo!) I’ll have to change my shirt before going. Sometimes I feel like being provocative and testing them with, say, a leather scent and wearing a leather jacket too. I wonder if anyone would say anything or if they would assume it’s the jacket.

I sometimes do the same thing in my choir, which has the same policy, which is mostly violated (not on purpose) by people forgetting about their hair products. I’m really good when we have dress rehearsals and so on, but on regular rehearsal days, I sneak in under the radar scents sometimes. Tried Au Coeur du desert this past Tuesday and it was a quite a bit stronger than I anticipated, oops! Lesson learned.

The odd thing is that the scent of leather (jacket) is from chemicals, but wouldn’t be seen as coming in scented? I’m all for sensitivity, but sometimes the logic seems selective and fuzzy.

Friday…yay! JM whisky and cedarwood. Okay but not very exciting. Tonight I am going to an exhibition celebrating 60 years of the university writing ‘fellows’ i.e. Writers in residence so there will be displays of our books, photos and a lot of the living authors have been flown in. It will be fun and an opportunity to break out the fake fur. I watched the film The Wife last weekend and have just read John Boyne’s A Ladder to the Sky – both about novelists stealing stories/ taking the credit for another’s work. The scene here is tame by comparison with no raging Glenn Close in sight. I was given a sample of JM honeysuckle last weekend but it didn’t make much impression. Will wear Debaser tonight which brings to mind the wet-lushness of Pulp and Philosokos

Shiseido Ever Bloom is a pretty, safe floral and not too expensive.

Lalique Encre Noire for me today. Gorgeous vetiver! I need to compare this to Sycamore sometime soon.

Just stepped outside to get a coffee and nearly fainted. The heat and humidity are off the charts today. Back in the office and fridged temps I’m happy to have gotten my hot cappuccino.

It’s horrid out there. Vetiver is a good choice in this weather.

Right?! I hadn’t been out since early in the morn. so it was a shock to walk into that “wall” of heat.

    Happy Almost-Friday NST!

I had a “Yikes” moment stepping into my shower this morning; had a creepy crawler in there! I did not have my glasses on, so I could not tell what it was. I did not care! I grabbed some TP and took care of the intruder. I hope that won’t happen again anytime soon! YUK!

SOTD = Cristalle EdT, from the sample stash. I think a couple of people mentioned wearing this earlier in the week. So “Thank You” for the perfume inspiration.

I hate creepy crawlers. I sometimes use the hand-held vacuum cleaner and hope I’ve either frightened it to death or it gets tangled in the dust / hairball and eventually suffocates.

Said creepy crawler ended up getting flushed. I think it might have been a silverfish, which are utterly gross in my book.

It’s the worst to be surprised when you’re not wearing glasses. It’s such a vulnerable time.

I have some really nice shower gel, so that helped. So did running the water for a minute to wash away any residual “Ick!”.

Hello ☺ I am checking in from Beaune, France. We started in London, then Paris and now Beaune. We have been going non-stop, and today is the first day I’ve had time to post. Whew!

I am wearing Guerlain Herba Fresca after a warm shower and am going to bed at a reasonable time .

I’m wearing Eau des Merveilles today. I think this is the first community challenge that I’ve been able to do a week from full bottles.

I picked up my new glasses today – my first pair of “progressives”, which I think of as bifocals. (Although apparently they’re decafocals.). These are definitely going to take some time to get used to. Is a headache for 3 weeks worth a bottle of sympathy perfume?

Yes, absolutely worth a sympathy bottle – TWO, if the headache goes on much longer. 😉

Ugh — 3 weeks of headaches?!? Oh yeah. If you’ve got a splurge on your wishlist go for that.

It took me even longer, hang in there! And yes, it probably rates 2 bottles.
