Tuesday scent of the day 9/4

Posted by Robin on 4 September 2018 265 Comments

A Tuesday that feels just like a Monday, plus, I overslept again — must be Monday's ugly little sister! It’s also Wildlife Day and Beyoncé’s birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

Me: Imaginary Authors An Air of Despair, again. Tea at the moment is an organic English Breakfast.

Reminder: on 9/7, wear a fragrance with cedar, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Alpha cedar teacups are ¥8,640 each at Generate in Japan.

Hi all! Wearing the lovely Eau de Gentiane Blanche today, one of my favorite “colognes.” My co-worker once said, “You smell like vegetables,” to which I responded, “Aw, thank you!” He didn’t mean it meanly, of course.

Now a side question for you: has anyone bought from perfumeking.net? I found that they have a harder-to-find perfume for a reasonable price as I was reading my Google results last night. I would have already placed my order but I’ve seriously never heard of them. The site looks legitimate, but I’m still hesitant. What do y’all think?

Oh, and I adore those teacups!!

Aren’t those cute? Plus, if I understand the translation they’re advertised as light enough for even old people to lift to their mouths ;-)

I love them! They would perfectly match my Nakashima for Knoll tray that is by far the nicest home good I own. I love the straight grain.

Love Eau de Gentiane Blanche! Light, airy, not too sweet. Don’t see it mentioned much so glad to find another fan.

It’s lovely stuff, cooling without smelling of citrus. I tend to feel that should I want to smell of a citrus fruit, I would peel one.

I don’t know the site. If it’s newer perfumes priced lower than anywhere else, I might worry they are fake. But for discontinued/reformulated ones, unmapped perfume backwaters are ideal!

I think it’s the former. Maybe it would be worth the $5.95 to get a Visa prepaid card and test it, though.

Canada was great, and like Deva mentioned in Quebec city and Montreal there were cooler temperatures in the morning followed by warm afternoons. Toronto was just hot.

I did go to the Manolo exhibit at the shoe museum. Lots of fun!

I’m in Penhaligon’s Sartorial today, mostly because I had a craving for it, but turns out it has cedar in the base notes, so it fits the CP too!

Today’s tea: Darjeeling with vanilla almondmilk and a splash of orange flower water.

I’m trying out orange flower water for the first time and would love suggestions on how to use it. Anybody have any favorites?

Sampling Ancients from Hi Wildflower which is a cool shady forest scent that lists Atlas cedar among its notes. Pretty sure that this is the closest I’ll get to the project this week since I’ll probably be unscented for the next few days (including buying a travel size of unscented Dr Bronner’s soap) to prep for my custom perfume experience on Friday. Woot! Woot! Woot! Cedar isn’t one of my favorite notes, so it probably won’t be in my custom blend either

I’m wearing vintage Guerlain Eau de Fleurs de Cedrat, a bright, citrussy EDT with a brisk, mineral drydown. Great lasting power, moderate sillage for an EDT, and good if you’re feeling blah.

Haven’t posted for a while since I’ve been on a self-imposed perfume moratorium because of budget concerns. But just used some Sephora points for a travel decant of Atelier Cologne Iris Rebelle and a sample set of the Commodity line. I do like IR, although after I read an NST review mentioned that it smells like carrots now I smell carrots. But that’s not a bad thing….

Really tired and stressed right now. My mother had told me last night that my dad had a doctor’s appointment this morning and I will be an hour late to work due to car issues. She said to call in to work and say that I won’t be in but I cannot afford to do that. So found a ride to work. I am wearing no 19 again. I’m CP compliant in SSS Incense Pure. Besides having a cedar note, it’s nice and calming which I appreciate since I had to (reluctantly) come back to work today after a three day weekend.

    Hey all!

    1) Summer is NOT done yet, so am in Cap Neroli. This was a great scent to have all summer, especially with baking heat we had.

    2) The project that I have been a part of is now a fait accompli- the database migration and new interface will be online next week. I expect everything to break and lots of people to freak out despite of maybe because they were told about the change. But it will be done and I will be able to move on with a substantial project on my resume, in additional to practically running a lab.

    3) I might buy a car.

        1) I am really proud to have been part of this project- it is a real feather in the cap for me and it is the culmination of a push that the company needed in this sector.

        2) I am thinking about gas mileage and efficiency so I am looking at Prius/Leaf cars. A solid German car would be nice but fuel efficiency for ME reigns over all considerations.

#2 – spoken like a true Portlander! My SIL drives one. As to a solid German car, my brother’s past few cars had been certified pre-owned (low mileage, longer warranty and a fraction of the cost of a new car of the same type).

I decided a couple years ago that I would pick a few independent perfumeries and follow them, and see if anyone mentions anything else that sounds appealing and affordable. It started to feel like my “hobby” was stressing me out, this has worked pretty well.

          Oh good!

I have mostly sat out new releases this year, and while the stress was from elsewhere, I did find it peaceful to not worry about keeping up. It’s really easy to get burned out if you feel like you have to smell everything or you’ll miss something great.

But I must confess I blind bought SL’s Participe passate and my first wear was NOT encouraging…. all cumin all day. It may have bumped up against some cap Nèroli so I will try again tomorrow….. ugh.

The sun has returned today after too much rain lately. It’s amazing what a profound effect it has on my mood.???? On days like this I find myself reaching for EdM, because it matches the weather and my good mood.
I was excited to see a trailer for the 3rd season of The Durrells in Corfu last night. Is it sad that I am looking forward to a television show on PBS? Lol. I don’t even care. I love that show.

PBS is without a doubt our favorite television. We haven’t had cable in over 20 years, but we have an appletv and can stream Netflix, prime and PBS.
I’m not on Facebook either!???? My unit actually has their own Facebook page and I hear all about the drama that goes on and I just don’t need that in my life. I love my job-most days- and my co-workers, but when I leave work, I leave work. Besides, my son told me a few years ago that Facebook is for “old people.” Lol. He helped me create an Instagram account instead.
My night shift is in a couple of weeks. It’s just one, so I really shouldn’t complain but I haven’t done one in forever! I can remember how I hit the wall around 3am…ugh.

Probably not the day for it, but I put on SL Feminite du Bois for its pencil shavings. I have held on to this decant for a few years now. Sometimes I love it, and sometimes it grates on me. I out on so little today that neither is happening.
I did a little side-by-side with Satori. Satori reminds me a bit of FdB, but a smoother, mellower, less sweet version. It would be my perfect version if it weren’t so fleeting and expensive.

I think I tend to notice the part that bothers me the most, which is the cinnamon. I have the same problem with Fate which smells like Atomic Fireballs to me. I could be totally off with Satori, but I got some similarities in the side by side.

Atomic Fireballs! I used to love those as a kid.
I bow to your vastly superior sense of smell. I only have a tiny amount left in a decant. I wish someone would split it.
I’m also liking my sample of Aroma M Vanilla Hinoki. I’ve been dabbing it on at night and it’s so cozy. I think you have the oil format? Just curious why you chose oil over EDP? If you don’t mind my asking?

She-ra, I have another shampoo and conditioner recommendation if you want to still smell it in your hair through the day – Garnier Whole Blends Honey Treasures. It is on the opposite end of the price spectrum as Iles. ???? I had previously only used the shampoo with unscented conditioner and couldn’t still smell it after blow drying. But now I’ve just used the shampoo and conditioner together, and my hair is still scented with it.

Oh yes! I have a sample from Nordstrom. 12 anemic sprays from the equally anemic plastic atomizer. It is not long lasting … I can barely smell it now, but 100 mLs when I get the bottle.

The great purge – one last effort when I get home. The goal is within reach AND I know I have more to do in the coming months.

Smelled in the wild this morning – SJP Stash. Whomever wore it was on theme! I may wear this on Friday unless something else gets my attention. Any favorites from the crowd?

Great article, thanks for posting. When I went to Chicago a few years ago, I rode the El for the first time, despite being born and raised a stones throw from the city. I loved it. I also loved the Metro when I went to Paris a million years ago. There is something about the constant shifting and rocking of the car that I find so relaxing and comforting.

Thanks for sharing the article. Very interesting. I think if we are more tolerant with our surroundings, we will probably be more relax. The NYC subway is not easy, but I will keep this in mind starting tomorrow. I am sure other people see the weird part of us that we do not realize.

I’m back in Sa Majeste la Rose today. Just got it yesterday from Koyel and I loved it so much last night I just sprayed it again today! Will hope to participate the rest of the week.

Tuesdays that feel like Mondays are the worst! Plus the weather here has been amazing. It’s 72 right now and no humidity and I want to be outside sooo bad. Boo!

Aliage. I need green and plenty of it. So, I also pulled out a sample and sprayed Selva Do Brazil on top.

Tuesday $5 movie this evening will be The Meg. We need something to counteract the seriousness of First Reforned, which we saw over the weekend. Massive hungry sharks will do.

I enjoy some silly action movies. This is not Jaws. Silly, predictable – worth $5. My husband liked it better than I did…I got a bit bored.

Jaws is much, much scarier. I’m old enough to have seen it on the big screen when it was released. Then I saw it again a few years back on the big screen for the first time since then. It really is far better on the big screen. A very well paced movie. And scary. The Meg isn’t scary.

I love Aliage in the summer. Vintage is better than current.

I have a good array of cedar perfumes lined up for the week. Yesterday was a success in D.S. & Durga Freetrapper, a dry incense and cedar focused scent. Today I’m in Fiele Fragrances Cedrus, which is built around three kinds of cedar. I really like both of them and may dab on a little more Cedrus during my lunch break.

I wonder if the three kinds of cedar really smell very different from one another. Curious. I guess they must. Do you detect any “different” kinds of cedar notes in the perfume? I’d like to have a little set of testers that would reveal those variations.

No, it’s a very well blended perfume so I can’t smell different cedar notes. But I imagine I’d smell differences in the raw materials.

And damn, I forgot to bring my sample vial to lunch with me so I’ll have to reapply later.

I’m in 24 Faubourg today, from a BUB that I really only bought because it came with an adorable mini that I gave to a friend who admired the scent. I would swear this bottle has more oakmoss (or whatever they put in that emulates oakmoss) than my mostly-but-not-quite-finished first bottle.

I am a Hajusuuri twin today in Chanel Paris-Deauville.
I too went to Nordstrom yesterday and made myself a sample, but not before spraying my entire left arm with 8-10 good sprays from the tester. Lovely stuff and it reminds me of the O de Lancôme of decades past (have not smelled it recently). Lasting power on the feeble side, but if I pressed my nose to my arm I could still smell it several hours later. This one has to be sprayed with aplomb, for sure. Hence the 125 mL bottle.

By comparison, I had 2 small sprays of Dior Privee Ambre Nuit on my right arm and I could still smell it 24 hours later. It’s a very nice, well behaved, elegant amber, perfect for fall.

And now I really want both! ????

Hey NSTRs! I had a hectic weekend with no tIme to post. It was my birthday this past Saturday. I didn’t get perfume this year but I did treat myself to a new Dooney bag; Almost as good as perfume and something that I needed. Plus the website was running a great sale.
My FIL has been recooperating in a nursing home this summer so we took his German Shepherd, Giorgi Girl, home this past Sunday. We went on hike in a state forest and let her run around our yard off leash for the rest of the day. While hiking, we met a women on who was horseback riding. Giorgi who never barks, had never seen a horse before. She hid behind my husband and barked until he shushed her. My husband has been walking her daily but she’s alone too much and we worry about her. She’s such a sweet girl. I’d take her in a heartbeat but my cat is terrified of her. We’re going to have find a better situation for her soon.

I took today off for an extra long weekend. I went clothes shopping and stopped at the perfume counter on my way out of the store. I sniffed the new Dior Joy. It was just okay. I also sniffed EL White Linen and it smells very much like I remember. I also finally tried Knowing which is fabulous but it would be hard for me to find places to wear it.

Awww, Happy Birthday to you and glad you took an extra day for yourself.
So kind of you to look after the dog, but poor kitty! Maybe it’ll warm up to the dog? My cats are afraid of my neighbor’s cat. Sometimes they have a standoff in the yard peeking under the fence. The neighbor’s cat is so friendly. It’s my cats that are the hissers, lol. They don’t seem to mind the neighbor’s dog, oddly.
Keeps me from any grand ideas about fostering cats, though. I hope you find somewhere for Giorgi and that your FIL recuperates soon!

Meowy, a.k.a., the king of everything, was a stray and is just terrified of Giorgi. Probably a great survival strategy for a stray cat. If I force them into the same room Meowy hides and freezes into a solid board What’s ironic is that Giorgi is just as afraid of Meowy. I wish they could talk. We’re going to try again next Sunday using a crate for the dog but I don’t have high hopes. Meowy is indoor/outdoor so he’ll just disappear until the dog leaves. With our acreage and neighboring barns, I’ll never find him if he hides. I really wish I could make it work.

Happy belated Birthday! Sorry to hear about your FIL. His situation is one that I always worry about too, although I’m not 92. I worry (probably very uselessly) about T-Rex if something should happen to me. Hoping you can find a solution where you FIL is well looked after and can still keep Giorgi. Cats and dogs DO acclimate but it can take a while. I introduced an adult cat to my adult Rottweiler, and while they were never BFF’s, there was mutual tolerance and respect.
