Thursday scent of the day 8/30

Posted by Robin on 30 August 2018 299 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday, and happy Toasted Marshmallow Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

Me: still at the beach, where it is way too hot to be thinking about toasting marshmallows unless you do it inside over the gas burner. I have overslept, again, and have not yet thought about scent but it will probably be Estée Lauder Bronze Goddess Whipped Body Cream.

Reminder: on 8/31 we're doing Fabric Friday...wear a perfume named for some type of clothing or fabric, OR wear a scent you associate with a certain kind of clothing or fabric, OR wear a perfume with a fabric-related note (suede, cotton, etc). Suggested by Glannys.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I just received a decant of Terracotta Le Parfum yesterday, so that is what I’m wearing.

I like it. I’m not sure that I love it. I will probably have to wear it more than once to determine if I need a bottle. There is an element under the bwf that is intriguing. I don’t think it is the coconut.

I thought I might not need a bottle, but decided on a 15 ml and very happy with it 🙂

SOTD- Jo Malone Peony and Blush Suede. I poured the whole vial on my arms and neck, so another sample is gone. Jo Malone fragrances never worked for me and P&BS is no exception. While it is pretty and summery, the musk feels very synthethic and overwhelming, meh!!! The matching fabric would be cotton gauge, not suede as the name suggests. I am pairing my SOTD with dusty pink maxi dress with off white geometric figures.
Off to prepare a package for one generous NSTer- I also will be reeking VC&A California Riverie and Amouge (haven’t decided yet if it will be Lyric or Memoir).

I love Peony & Blush Suede. I bought the largest bottle for my eldest when she turned 18 and it was the only fragrance she wore for the entire year. Whenever I smell it I think of her.

PSA. Lush Uk released new* online exclusive perfumes: Metamorphosis, Over and Over, Assassin, Two More Hearts, Orange Blossom and Cocktail.
*They had Orange Blossom and Cocktail before, so I suppose these two do not really count as new.
    https://uk.lush.com/products/lush-labs

Today I chose Naomi Goodsir Cuir Velours for the CP. (It’s not hot! I can wear leathers!)

A quote from Naomi Goodsir’s website:
“A deep & textured perfume, that evocatively encases the skin like soft velvet suede.”
I agree: soft velvet suede. And it’s yummy.

Jacomo #02, because I felt like smelling like wet clay for a few hours. I absolutely love it and might get a back-up while I can. Sometimes it just perfectly hits the spot.

SOTD is De Profundis, to counter the mugginess today. I can’t decide if its proper fabric association is gauze or raw silk. Do they make silk gauze? That would be perfect.

Funny that it’s Toasted Marshmallow Day because I am (still) wearing the remnants of Elevator Music by Byredo, which for the first umpteen hours reminds me of unicorn vomit, but has now dried down (this thing is unscrubbable, I swear) to something akin to the smell of the sun melting the residue inside the bag of marshmallows that you inadvertently left out the night before at a campfire. A slightly nauseating memory of a raucous evening, but mostly an upset stomach.

If you guys ever visit South Africa, forget about going on Safari or taking a cable car to the top of Table Mountain.Vintage perfume shopping!!!This little country is a treasure trove of all things lost and forgotten, mostly because people don’t really “know” perfumes here. All they see and buy are the new and shiny stuff at the malls.I once went to a perfumerie’s closing down sale, and went home with pristine vintage parfum de toilette and parfum of EVERYTHING Guerlain my heart desired(Jicky,Mitsouko,L’Heure Bleu,to name a few).I would make a fortune selling vintage on ebay,if it was not for the pesky restrictions on shipping etc etc…

    SotM = Nicolai Patchouli Intense

I love the burnt sugar smell of toasted marshmallow, especially with a little singe on it. Robin, I hope you enjoy toasting yourself at the beach.

Lavender, geranium, rose, cinnamon, bay leaf, with vanilla hanging out in back. Interesting to be able to pick out notes so clearly, they hang together nicely. Smells very very French. I like this very much, and am glad I got a Nicolai sample, they are beautifully done.

I’d pair the scent with a vivid paisley scarf or blouse, lots of purples and greens, some blues and reds too.

This morning I spent some time tidying the sample tsunami, sheesh, what a mess, and found this one was untested. I often avoid anything with patchouli in the name, so live and learn, try everything!

I think this is the intense version of Patchouli Homme. Nicolaï pour Homme has been discontinued for years. It was a gorgeous lavender.

You know what, I thought about asking the same question! Patchouli Intense does “feel” a bit masculine to me, but I get that from what seem like the “very French” perfumes and colognes. I think there is a bit of a mineral edge to something in the bases that are commonly used. It reminds me of Eau de Rochas, and also reminds me how the perfumed people of Europe smell very different from those in the US. Or they did years ago when I was last there. 😉

I have a sample of that one and didn’t love it on me (I think I was hoping for more patchouli) but gosh it smells gorgeous on my husband. FB-worthy, for sure.

I am getting a manicure today and I am going to finish packing for our trip. We are leaving tomorrow, taking a direct flight into London, spending a couple of days there, then taking the train into Paris.

Thank you to all who gave me helpful suggestions when I posted this over the weekend 🙂 I wrote them down and will take the suggestions with me.

Oh you should definitely go by Ormonde Jayne’s gorgeous boutique at The Royal Arcade (if you can not be distracted by all the windows down Old Bond Street!). I went last week on my visit and they have completely redesigned it – really sleek light in the shape of their overcap. And the sweet manager gave me a sample of their new leather scent Cuir Emperor (?) – can’t remember the exact name, but it’s gorgeous! I think they have a special promotion on today for Ormonde Jayne’s birthday, so you receive a free candle with every purchase – also online.

OJ Frangipani. Been a while since I’ve worn this. Hello old friend.

Changed the bed linens and used copious amounts of the plumeria floral water as a linen spray.

Bit by bit I’m tidying this tiny apartment. After being in a relatively big house with big master bedroom much of the summer, I found our little place very claustrophobic. Didn’t help that we lost control of the clutter. I really want to warn all those people enamored with Tiny Houses…

Ha! I totally understand your clutter issue. And it tiny places, just a fork left out of place equals clutter. I’m kind of a messy gal, and tend to toss things hither and yon, then get a big bite from the cleanup bug, and tornado my way through decluttering.

Nope. Doesn’t work in a small space. I am (slowly) learning to clean, wash, dry, and put things away the minute they are done being useful. Clutter in the van makes me irritable. One more reason I’m happy to be getting the van build done because it makes the space so much more functional.

SOTD is Lublin Epidor which is lovely. It has a lot of flowers in it, but it’s still a big hit deep in my curmudgeonly anti-floral heart. Not sure why. I suppose I could analyze it, break it down into it’s smaller bits, scrutinize reviews and opinions, but really, I just don’t care why I like it so much. It’s enough for me that I do.

So yesterday I ordered my solar panels, my inverter, charge controller and roof vent/fan so they can be installed next week. I don’t mind telling you it equaled a few bottles of Onda VdE, and while I’m really excited about bringing my tiny home to life, I’m sorry to see the money go. It always leaves me, and every time it does, I feel so ALONE! ????

Interestingly (or maybe not! Lol), in the entire time I’ve been van camping in the past year, I’ve never made s’mores or melted a single marshmallow. Probably because in Oregon it rained all the time and it was impossible to have a fire, or because I was in areas that were on high fire alert and no campfires were allowed. It’s not the same when you toast the shmallow over a butane stove…

Oh, hey – I responded to your query re: soap nuts but you may not see it.

Yes, very travel-friendly and lightweight, and also last forever (longer than indicated – I use mine for more washes than recommended without issue.) They get laundry very, very clean. My husband initially resisted, but has come around and it’s what we use on his dirty, stinky, sweaty work clothes.

People also use them to make a soap solution for face, body, hair and household. I’ve not tried this, but now I’m wondering if it makes a good dishsoap…

Oh, thanks! I didn’t see your response earlier and appreciate you posting it again. My concern was similar to your husbands- ie: I come home with a lot of invisible hitchhikers on scrubs. Even though we gown up to enter isolation rooms for people with MDRO’s, there are tons of people who are carriers, not symptomatic, and undiagnosed. Everyone has something in my book, so I was wondering how “clean” the nuts really got clothes… as soon as I’m done with my current detergent, I’ll give them a whirl.

I’m mostly paranoid about bringing something home from work myself, even though we only do “clean” eye procedures and ops.Nevertheless,I take a 10 minute shower at work and scrubs never come home unless it was an “only admin”-day in theatre for me.

Since I’m not familiar with inner workings of hospitals, are you saying that most scrubs are laundered by the hospital and do you get a generic one next time or do you always get your own back?

          • johanob says:
            30 August 2018 at 4:11 pm

Well most hospitals here operate on the generic system, where they launder everything and you get to wear whatever is available in the change rooms.Being fortunate to work where I do,we all have 5 sets of scrubs, embroidered with our logo and each staff members’ name on the Tops, and our initials at the back of the pants,so I get my own Johanò top and “JB on my ass” pants back from the laundry company.????????????????

No scientist here, and I just use warm water generally. I think the dryer is what really kills everything, big and small. A couple of times I have thrown my bedding directly into the dryer after camping in areas with a lot of ticks. They will survive water and detergent, but the heat from the dryer will kill them in about 20-25 minutes. I kept my stuff in there for an hour because I believe in overkill when it comes to bugs. ????

“Intensely rich, sweet, fruity-floral aroma with honeyed apricot, dried raisin and plum nuances, light spicy and soft green notes, and faint animalic/leather undertones; very tenacious.”

yes I would say so…what I have done historically is buy the tiny sample and add a carrier oil (jojoba, sweet almond, grapeseed) to the vial up to the top….then I shake it and turn it upside down for several days until the osmanthus absolute blends with the carrier. Then just put it on from the vial stick like any other oil perfume. It really smells divine and very complex.

SOTD + Parle Moi Orris Tattoo

The Candy Perfume Boy wrote about this:
    https://thecandyperfumeboy.com/2018/08/27/perfume-review-orris-tattoo-29-by-parle-moi-de-parfum/

I associate this perfume name with batik. According to a google search, “Batik is a “resist” process for making designs on fabric. The artist uses wax to prevent dye from penetrating the cloth, leaving “blank” areas
in the dyed fabric. The process, wax resist then dye, can be repeated over and over to create complex multicolored designs.

In other news, I was finally able to close my mom’s IRA CD at Smells Cargo. Someone else helped me (although he had to once again confirm my POA). I also took the opportunity to tell the Service Manager that she’s a liar and then she had the audacity to say but the banker was on the phone with me with the phone rep, to which I said “Shame on you for hanging your banker out to dry” with a dismissive index finger wave (I should have used my middle finger) but since I was wearing a shirt that shows Mickey Mouse yelling Seriously?, that was enough of a statement. I should have spit as I left the premises but I did not even want to waste an effort to do so. Good riddance Wells Fargo, may the regulators fine you to bankruptcy over your unscrupulous practices.

Wowzers! I would have paid good money to see that! But it IS infuriating how some organizations practice their business. So many shysters, crooks, and flat out criminals publicly fleecing the populace. The lack of integrity in business, large and small, is horrendous.

If only I were in charge of the world????

I’m wearing Princess by Kilian. I like it, but I do NOT get any of the listed notes (ginger, green tea, and marshmallow), which is a shame as that combination sounded like a fabulous dessert that I wanted to both smell like and consume. Definitely not FBW, but I’ll enjoy my small purse spray for as long as it lasts.

Absolutely OBSESSED with my newest sample: Iris Nazarena.

This is intriguing and enigmatic– one moment, it’s the perfect carroty iris, then just freshly cut wood, then something floral, then back to iris but this time a gauzy iris, then smoke and a touch of incense. Some vetiver.

    I loooooove this, you guys.

A cool morning, and something made me think of Coromandel so that’s what I’m wearing. I recall rather vividly posting here over a year ago, “I’m wearing Coromandel so it must be fall.” It seemed to apply to this morning’s activities – “I just bought a cashmere sweater so it must be fall” – but who am I kidding? I buy sweaters year-round.

(I am, by the way, still buying & trying snow boots on a regular basis. I must have tried 20 pair by now. I’ve kept 3, so I’m in fairly good shape.)

Not a marshmallow fan EXCEPT TJ’s Minty Mallows. They are peppermint-flavored marshmallows coated in chocolate. Dunked into hot chocolate in the winter – addictive yumminess!

MFK Grand Soir from a rapidly evaporating sample, in an effort to rescue its gorgeous warmth!

I’ve been complaining about work a lot lately, and today I’m disgruntled about an apparent nonuniformity in the implementation of rules on male vs. female employees. I’m not sure how I can lodge an HR complaint, because I was breaking the rules, after all. The question is why I was asked to change my behavior when my male coworker (in an ostensibly identical situation!) was not. This is a lot of disgruntlement in a short period of time. I think I need to start a job search.

You’re right to be careful because you’re pretty much admitting to doing something against policy. If the consequence of violating policy is spelled out clearly and it was not applied to the other person, then you may have grounds for a complaint.

Oh, and Grand Soir is fantastic. Have you tried Jo Malone Myrrh & Tonka? They’re not the same but my brain thinks of them as interchangeable.

My current body wash is the JM Myrrhe & Tonka shower oil! I LOVE IT. Some kind NSTer also gave me a sample of it, which I’ve been enjoying. It doesn’t smell like Grand Soir to me, but they’re both great and they do both fill the need for warmth and comfort 🙂

The initial consequence of violation was just to be asked to stop doing it. I’m simply rankling because the other person hasn’t been asked to stop (which is actually what encouraged me to think the policy wasn’t enforced).

Well, that sucks! I hate double standards! I think sometimes we complain about work (or other stuff) because discussing it is a small step in the process of change. Ultimately it helps us to make changes for the better. Some people do whine by habit, but I think that’s different from complaining about legitimate issues. I hope the situation gets resolved in a positive manner.

Your complaints seem pretty standard for corporate environments I’ve worked in, not sure changing jobs would necessarily help. My most important criteria for a job are: is the manager friendly and supportive, are the coworkers and work assignments tolerable, and is the salary sufficient to support my lifestyle. That’s about it. If I got those three, I just deal with the annoyances. Of course, if they are overworking you for the amount that they are paying, then that would be a deal-breaker.

Just some Chanel No. 5 oil after my shower as we had a post op appt w the surgeon for my younger son–so did not want to overwhelm other patients with perfume. My son got his cast off today, and is now in a boot. I am looking forward to him getting a proper shower this evening–first time since July 11th!

And about my eternal APB on bottles of Stephen Jones edt… (If you have a bottle-full or partial– and are willing to sell it, PLEASE let me know)… After corresponding with about half of the CdG corporation in Paris, London and Hong Kong… this:

“I hope this note finds you well.

Thank you for your inquiry regarding the Stephen Jones fragrance. The likely reason that you are no longer able to find the Stephen Jones perfume is that Comme des Garcons carries out periodic olfactory tests on all our perfumes and it appears that the Stephen Jones fragrance did not meet the original standards. Therefore all the perfume was collected and unfortunately the scent has been discontinued.

Apologies for not being able to accommodate your request.”

Collected? Wow. Really? Who knew!! Such is the heartbreak of a perfume lover (I hear all you folks sniping “first world problem!” 😉 )

By the by, not only did every single person I reached out to along the CdG food chain get back to me, but they were all, in fact, very nice.

I can also wholeheartedly recommend calling them. I was able to buy their last bottle of the rare L’Artisan Eau du Fleuriste. They have quite a bit of discontinued and hard to find stock, and they were lovely to deal with. I started tearing up when she retrieved the bottle from the back room and told me it was the last one and that she was glad it was going home with me.

Hullo. Checking in late as usual for Thursdays, when I come out of clinic all droopy and drained. I must be an introvert; I find too much intense interaction exhausting. Anyway I have dabbed on a little reviving Private Collection from my office mini. I picked it because I think its complicated greenness goes well with lake swimming, which is my plan for right after work.

So envious of your lake swimming! San Diego has many things, but no lakes that are swimmable. The ocean is here, sure, but it is cold and rough. There is nothing like some lake swimming in the summer.

It sounds like you may not be an introvert based on MBTI if I am reading into your comment of “I must be an introvert”. I’m an extrovert although I need me only time occasionally.

Hello one and all! I just couldn’t face another day of Jardin Sur le Nil or Pomelo Paradis, which have been my staples all summer. So even though it is really hot, I’m in Arielle Shoshanna. It works much better in the heat than I would ever have imagined. I sprayed lightly, but still, it is not cloying, and the fruitiness really helps on a hot day.

Arielle Shoshanna’s perfume gets a lot of love here at NST. Sounds like it’s for good reason.

Not quite fall weather here, but at least it feels like an ordinary summer day instead of the sauna from hell. The weather forecast has the temps dropping by almost 15 degrees F tomorrow.

SOTD = back in ‘Replica’ Tea Escape EdT. I had a doctor’s appointment earlier today, and wearing something quiet sounded like a good idea to me. Plus, it is a great hot weather scent.

So jealous of your future drop in temperatures. It’s srill a “sauna from hell” here. ????

Hope the MD appointment went well.

The temps will drop for a little bit, but the darn humidity is supposed to stick around. Bleah. Hoping that it won’t be clammy over the weekend.

The doctor appointment was a consultation, so it was no big deal. Just lots of paperwork to fill out.

Glad you are getting a break from the heat. We stayed in the 70s all day, with sunshine, it was perfect. You might have already said, but wondering if Tea Escape is more a cologne in composition?

I wouldn’t call Tea Escape a cologne. What I’ve been getting is a short-lived fresh mint note, then either jasmine green tea bubble tea or green tea flavored Pocky, and a hint of light vanilla. No citrus notes in this at all… at least, not that I can smell.

Thanks, I’m not familiar with very many tea fragrances. I’ve tried and liked Laura Mercier Tea citron, but the mint note was a little to toothpastey.

I get the same toothpaste association with mint notes in perfume. It’s a nice smell but more medicinal than fragrance related for me.

SOTD is Le Labo Musc 25, which, like Baie Rose 26, has crept up on me as the sleepers in the Cities repertoire. I’m going to try to decide between them before buying one (a small one) in the upcoming September Cities availability month. I’ve never particularly liked or wanted a musk perfume, but this one is very endearing and cuddly.

Still hot as Hades where I am. Thunked an eensy sample of Niki de Saint Phalle EDT and took the dog on a long walk. Some rests in the shade, but he was a champ!

As far as fabric goes, wearing a gift from my mom, a “nevertheless, she persisted” t-shirt. Works for Niki.
