Wednesday scent of the day 8/29

Posted by Robin on 29 August 2018 256 Comments

Hump Day, and John Locke's birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

Me: still at the beach, still in Hermès Un Jardin Sur Le Nil lotion. It would probably go with some sort of watercolor design on silk, but it's too hot for all that, so it's getting a terry beach towel. I am not doing too well with this week's project.

Reminder: on 8/31 we're doing Fabric Friday...wear a perfume named for some type of clothing or fabric, OR wear a scent you associate with a certain kind of clothing or fabric, OR wear a perfume with a fabric-related note (suede, cotton, etc). Suggested by Glannys.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the round Tie Die Beach Towel is $24.99 at PBTeen.

A rather loose interpretation the CP. Kashmir = cashmere wool.

I happen to like it (the eldest left behind her bottle and told me to thunk it) but then again my tastes run sweet in both food and perfume ;)

Oh, I wasn’t laughing at the perfume, I was laughing because you found something in a plastic bottle so soon after my inquiry. I always liked that bottle because of the lace, and never realized it was plastic.

Oops sorry lillyjo it posted before I finished..I really hate using my phone versus the computer however your name show up without me having to type the whole thing in LOL ???? ???? what I wanted to say was the bottle is glass and pretty. But she bought it massively reduced last year as a travel set with body lotion so her bottle was plastic

I assumed Bloom was glass. Now I’m going to be double checking everything.

The refills just came out here in Montreal so I picked one up. I wasn’t too sure about it when I first smelled it, but every time I wore it I got a compliment, so I decided to go for it. Will be curious to smell the edt version when it comes out this fall. I didn’t like the Angel muse edt, too fruity.

I will be spending the afternoon outdoors with the temps feeling in the 100’s. Complaining will not help and in fact I don’t want to complain. For me winter is around the corner  and that gives me the chills. I will take this hot day with a smile on my face. I will think then that I am at the beach getting a nice tan. I surely will. Not the way I want though! Therefore, I am wearing Comptoir Sud Pacifique Aqua Motu, a big favorite beachy scent. Sadly, I am in my last drops. Full bottle “THUNK”. Sorry CM8 and Johanob, but this needs a replacement as soon as possible in order for me to survive! ????????. This is a perfume that needs to be in my collection permanently since I wear it a lot and hot summer dsys are not over yet….At least it can be found very cheap, so I will not break my “no buy” perfume resolution. CM8, I guess we don’t need to report these purchases to Donatella, right?????????????

According to Portia of Australian Perfume Junkies replacing a beloved perfume DOES NOT COUNT as breaking a no – buy!!! so yes, you and I are safe-LOL! and honestly, I don’t think we need to report it to Donatella either ;)

      stay cool, my friend!

I’m trying to tell myself that between then and now, we’ll have pleasant fall weather. I’ve tried to do some research re: fall weather in this region but can’t really find anything besides basic stats. My only comparison is Ottawa, where fall weather (in Oct) is really nice – warm and sunny days, though chilly at night. (Winter and snow does come close on its heels, though.)

Coming from a place where fall is gross (just like winter and spring) I’m looking for a silver lining… And fall colors, right? (Something my husband has never experienced, I might add.)

springpansy and LizzieB – I may have said it before but you must try organic coconut oil…it smells amazing and really moisturizes the skin in a very natural way…and it would work well with Aloha Tiara which I know Lizzie likes.

I used coconut oil (the solid type) for a couple of years as a moisturizer. I loved it on my skin but did not love the lingering coconut scent. This is my way of supporting your suggestion, btw ;)

I’ve since switched to fractionated liquid unscented coconut oil, which I add perfume to to scent. I’ve also been adding avocado and shea nut oils to the mix, but once I’ve finished those bottles up I’ll go back to straight coconut.

ODdly enough, regular coconut oil doesn’t bother me but fractionated coconut oil gave me a rash. I wonder if they use a chemical in the processing or why it would do that?

Yvresse today, from my previous shopping extravaganza. The first time I ever tried it (from a much evaporated bottle) I couldn’t see what the big fuss is. Now I do.

If I had such a garment, it would probably evoke something in gold mesh. Elegant but also a little sexy.

I think about ten years ago. They reintroduced it in a sort of classics range but I haven’t smelled it.

Hate to tell you but on eBay, a bottle puts you back at least $200 for vintage. But a decant will probably be much easier.

SotM = l’air du desert marocain, just a dab

A change back to warm weather today, I wanted to smell LADDM in the heat. The balance of energy and calm in this scent knocks me over every time.

Love that beach towel! My sister has a big tie-dyed sheet she bought at a Grateful Dead concert in her wilder days. Back then that sheet was the ground cover she used under her tent as she followed the tour. Now she uses it as a picnic blanket for the kids to eat on at the beach and park. Life’s too funny.

Oh, and speaking of calm, anyone have a favorite relaxing scent to recommend? I’m making a list.

I enjoy essential oils to relax at night….lavender, patchouli, frankincense and even the vanilla bean oil I make (marinated vanilla bean in a carrier oil).

Just a dab of LADDM is perfect in the summer. I’ve been keeping my mini on my nightstand and dab my wrists at bedtime some nights.

I find lavender relaxing. I know some hospitals are using lavender patches to help patients relax post op.
      Caron Pour un Homme maybe…?
(Autocorrect reeaally wants that to be U.N.)

Scent twins! It’s not quite as hot here today but it looks fallish and I feel fallish, lddm is a great choice.

I like lavender and incense for calming scents. SL Encens et Lavande is the gold standard imo because it’s both. Second Caron Pour Homme for lavender. CdG Kyoto is my favorite calming incense.

Thank you for the E&L reminder. I have not had good luck with SL in general but that one was on my radar a while ago. I probably have a sample I’ve never cracked open.

Kyoto is also a great idea, I’ve added it to my sampling list too.

I love LADDM in the summer. Our weather here went from oppressively muggy, to hot and humid, then yesterday it dried right up and was hot with dry winds (and quite roaring winds at that.) It felt like being in the desert, and was the perfect weather for LADDM. Alas, I have none – just ACdC. I find ACdC easier to wear in some respects, but also lacking the magic of the original.

I’m hoping to acquire some in the swapmeet. Though, come to think of it, I could just buy a sample from Andy’s website. Derp.

Oh, and I ended up wearing Terracotta. I know you’d approve :)

I’m in SL Vetiver Oriental (love this stuff and do NOT regret the FB purchase!) for a day of trying to empty out the van in hellish temps to prepare for the build starting next week.

I’m meeting a fellow traveler for dinner and cocktails at a local restaurant this evening. Nice to meet someone my age as most travelers are in their 20’s.

Two (!) tinted moisturizers, a very expensive and unnecessary eye shadow, a lipstick, a liquid lipstick, a highlighter, and a bronzer. I need none of these things. This, after I have just done a very thorough deep clean of my entire makeup traveling bag to winnow it down. Most of the time I look like a bag lady. I wear makeup as a public service so I don’t scare the young kids and my sick patients.

My problem is my skin keeps changing- colors, textures, and to add insult to injury, I broke out in a couple of massive zits due to hormones. Pretty small problems in the grand scheme of things, but a PITA none the less.

I did sniff some perfumes, but nothing really caught my fancy. ????????‍♀️

My skin keeps changing, too. It’s expensive to have to keep switching things up. Not to mention that I need to have like 7 layers of product on my skin to keep it moisturized all through the night. *sigh*

Yes, very frustrating! Also, I want products that multi-task. Like the tinted moisturizers- they both have a decent spf so I can get light coverage, moisture, and spf at the same time. The older I get, the more makeup looks heavy on my skin. I would recommend Paula’s choice for skin care because her range is vast, the products work well, are unscented, and cover the entire spectrum of skin issues. More affordable because less marketing and fancy packaging.

Years ago I was the make up queen. But then somewhere along the way I lost interest and time (takes a lot of time to paint your face every morning). Mini Marzipan picked up the torch and I would just borrow stuff from her when I needed to so basically had nothing of my own. My oldest is also like me. Zippo interest. Our middle marzipan keeps both of us supplied with something. I kinda just go with what she gives me and 9 times out of 10 I wear nothing.

    Hump Day;

    1) Am in Chanel Eau Premiere because why not? It is going to be a very pleasant 80F and sunny, so this is just perfect.

    2) I did a large load fo laundry yesterday, and I wonder if fabrics themselves have a scent, or do we add certain scents to fabrics to associate that scent to a fabric? For example, I did all the slipcovers on the sofa AND my bed linen (it took all night) and I used unscented Method detergent, vinegar, bleach, Shout (a stain remover) and lavender water spray. So all my sheets and my slipcovers smell of all these things, very faintly. IS that melange what we are going for when we talk about a ‘clean’ scent or a ‘linen’ scent?

You can buy lavender water spray at most stores OR make your own using grain alcohol and lavender essential oil. After the final rinse, I sprayed the scented water on the sheets and slipcovers and then placed into the dryer until damp/dry; for the slipcovers I placed back on the sofa cushions so that the shape could be maintain. The cotton sheets and duvet cover I steam ironed and then made the bed. Vinegar and bleach smells do linger and combine with lavender a bit but it all seems to fade into a ‘cloth’ scent.

I am duly impressed by your steam ironing of your linens! I’d also guess that that steam smell is a scent associated with clean bedding?

I recently started using soap nuts. I’m not sure why, exactly, but I think I’ll stick with them. They leave a faintly “clean” scent, but not one that’s particularly discernible. (Come to think of it, I may have bought them because I wanted a scentless laundry wash…?)

I also recently bought a clothing steamer. It does much better on knits (which is what I mostly wear) than an iron does – plus it’s about a million times faster.

When I bought the house I bought these expensive bougie sheets and they feel like magic if you do a quick steam iron. The steam really does add to a ‘cloth’ smell!

I also have a clothing steamer and I use that on sweaters for a quick clean.

Soap nuts sound intriguing! I have also used Dr. Bronners Castile Soap- it is available unscented and you can use about the about the house.

Aeon 001. The only fabric or clothing I can think of that matches is a large silk scarf–that’s something that can change shape and use with every wear, and even from hour to hour. Possibly some sort of shot fabric, that catches the light in different ways–copper and greened-copper. (huh, that works for MEM as well, just in different colours)

    and a question:
So, if someone was to buy a bottle of perfume as a present, does Donatella need to know? How about if that present was bought at least partially so someone could also help themselves to it, you know, while it was sitting on the shared shelves?

Asking for, er, a friend. Ahem.

Hey, Aeon 001…..it does not get a lot of mentions. I have a sample somewhere….I remember liking it
But mostly I just needed to compliment you on your very awesome avatar. I am a big Eeyore fan (mostly in EH Shepard style, of course). ????

I LOVE Aeon with a mad love. I wish I hadn’t fallen so hard for something that was a tiny limited edition. But after working through a decant, and finally landing a bottle I decided to just use and enjoy every drop of it and do my best not to hoard it.

also, aye, Eeyore :) Me and eeyore have a fair bit in common. I always loved those E.H.S. illustrations and… have never seen the Disney cartoons.

Wearing Lady GaGa Eau de GaGa, ignore all the perfume doublespeak, it is a fougere. Opening with a pleasantly realistic lime note, some leather and finishing with pretty much the same, I am reminded of a pressed, white oxford cloth shirt and a leather jacket. Cheers!

In Gourmand Coquin and smelling deeeeelightful. I was going to say that I don’t have a textile association with this one, but actually, the day I discovered it smelled wonderful in summer weather was last year on the 4th of July. I was wearing a sleeveless, high-necked, white lace blouse and I do associate this with that particular garment. I’m also now reminded that we gorged on freshly-steamed Dungeness crab that day. *heaven*

I just realized that I’ve been in a bit of a perfume doldrum because my primary collection is stored off-site. And by off-site, I mean the other bedroom, where I seldom go poke around. Outta sight, outta mind and all that. I need to swap my seasonals out before summer’s over, methinks.

I have a row of samples/small decants lined up on my dresser that I am working my way through, the goal is to thunk them all by the end of September in an attempt to reduce their number.

SOTD sjp Stash, I’ll have to pair it with the black organza from the ads :)

Stash has been overwhelming me lately, and I just seem to get a LOT of cedar, but someone mentioned it has pistachio in it, and I did in fact smell that when I put it on – the mind is amazing.

I also read a review that recommended layering this with E&J Black Nirvana, so I am doing that too – I’ll pair that with purple organza because of the violet.

I think the trick to wearing Stash for me is MODERATION.

that’s interesting – you mean you basically use it as a room spray? I also have the oil, that might work better on skin for me, to target home much goes on. Also, wondering if cedar scent can ward off moths in the same way cedar does?

Yep, I use it as a room spray, just always in my closet. I have the oil as well – I don’t use it much, because it requires application with the hands, and I don’t like having scent on my palms.

Not sure about the moth issue. Can they be faked out with synthetics? :-)

Just that for me the perfect black dress would be either an above knee sleeveless shift or an Audrey Hepburn Breakfast at Tiffanys gown and that I don’t visualise either of those dresses from this perfume. The cherry is very sweet to me – and I’m not big on cherry – and for me it conjures up images of black tulle tutus (Black Swanns) or naughty teenagers – which may or may not be a good thing

I’m wearing Penhaligon’s Elixir from a sample. It’s a nice rose-incense but not my thing. It’s definitely conjuring up associations with priests in robes and skirts and a procession with little bells, a coffin, candelabra, and altar boys. All that was at a high-mass Episcopal funeral I went to of a neighbour who died. Not my kind of ceremony but sometimes that solemnity does seem appropriate. I’m in a down mood because (a) I keep having itchy rashes and don’t know why, and (b) I’m in a role in a professional society where some of us are being blamed for something in a public way that treats us as either incompetent or malevolent, or both, and it hurts. Issues are involved that can’t be clarified for legal reasons and it’s been making me lose sleep. (Maybe it’s making me itchy too?)

Wearing Rose Trocadéro by Le Jardin Retrouve. It is one of the roses that smell great on me without turning soap-y.

I’m really bad with associating anything with anything but that fabric project left me completely puzzled. I know a couple of perfumes with the names that would fit but I do not own any of them (well, maybe a sample or two but I’m not going to wear them other than for the project day itself).

I think it’s because for some people, including me, perfumes often seem to involve tactile properties. They are heavy or light, smooth or rough, silky or scratchy, and so on. I’d think of one perfume to associate with kitten fur, for example, vs. another type to associate with a different texture, like a dusty old manuscript in an antique shop. I’m not at all a literal synaesthete (sp?) but in the same way some seem to go with tastes, etc., some have texture qualities, and so do fabrics. Heavy is more wool and light is more silk, and so on.

Not nearly as humid as yesterday. The heat index “only” made it to 104F. Thankfully, this dangerous weather is supposed to be over with after today. Then it becomes merely unpleasant. I’m hoping that everyone who has to work outside is staying well hydrated and can take breaks in the shade as needed. ????????????????

SOTD = ‘Replica’ Tea Escape EdT, from the sample stash. I noticed a great, but fleeting mint note with this one today. No fabric to go along with this one.

The day has completely gotten away from me! I’m wearing Bas de Soie from a dabber sample, and I might be in love. I’ve had this sample for a while but initially dismissed it, so this is only my second time wearing it. The beginning stage is my favorite when the iris is most prominent. It actually reminds me of my beloved and discontinued Ava Luxe Hong Kong Garden. Weirdly, 8 hours after application it’s still going strong and reminds me of Vivienne Westwood Boudoir.
