Thursday scent of the day 8/23

Posted by Robin on 23 August 2018 329 Comments

Thursday, and Barbara Eden's birthday (and if you have a few minutes you need to dispose of, here she is singing with Tom Jones). What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Lush 25:43. I've really got to come up with something for tomorrow's project.

Reminder: on 8/24, in honor of Pluto Demoted Day, wear a fragrance you used to obsess over, but don't care so much about anymore. If you can, tell us why you don't love it anymore. Suggested by Katrina.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

and I have nothing for tomorrow because I basically just conehead my way through all of my fragrances…I rarely save anything and if I do it is usually a scent I don’t want to thunk (right now it is just two).

          Ha! Knew someone would ask!

Nocturnes de Caron because when I was 17 I followed a woman around in a museum to ask what she was wearing because she smelled so amazing. Her husband was in a wheelchair and he beamed when I asked because he bought it for her. My best friend was with me at the time and she ended up buying me my first bottle when I turned 18. I think I must have drained 1000 or more ml of it in my lifetime.

Heaven by the Gap because I wore it on my first date with my husband (23 years ago ON THIS DAY) when we went to Jones Beach. He told me I smelled good (coming from him this is a HUGE compliment because he never says anything or else he says my stuff is too strong). During our first year of courtship that was the only fragrance I wore. I still have about 7 or 8ml of it left In a 20 or so ml travel spray….I once bought 18 bottles of it when I heard it was being d/c…..I called every Gap store until I found one and the lady thought she was hearing things when I told her to mail me 18 bottles. I also wore it when we eloped 🙂

CM8 – I love your stories! I’m so glad I hopped on the site today ????

I was seriously considering getting a bottle of intense pure, but I’m on my “no buy”, and I’m sticking with it – I have a sample that I ordered from Laurie last year – and I do like to sniff it sometimes

I do admire how much you spray and enjoy perfume ????????

I am very shy in person in real life but I can type up a storm…sometimes my stories get out of hand-LOL!
I think Incense Pure is popular enough to stay in the lineup when someone new takes over. If you still like it then and you have thunked enough to justify more perfume you can always pick it up then.
As I have gotten older I realize that LIFE IS JUST TOO SHORT so I am really trying not to hoard and just spray away!!!!!

Such great memories! Did you go through all 18 bottles except the one you have left? Or were some gifts?

          • chocolatemarzipan8 says:
            23 August 2018 at 9:54 am

Nope I drained them all…and when I realized I really could not find it anymore I bought that travel spray to keep for nostalgia…..

Those are charming stories. I wonder whether the couple in the museum remember(ed) that day as fondly as you do. I also saw that episode in which Sebastian referred to Chanel’s sales — was that for fragrances alone, or everything? I can’t recall. And while I’m talking about him, I’ll bet many here would enjoy the couple of videos he has posted recently featuring perfumer-in-training Ashley: there is a neat chemistry between them.

            23 August 2018 at 11:18 am

Sfguy, it was a young married couple and the husband was clearly disabled. Based on both of their reactions that some strange teenager would follow them until she got up the nerve to ask and the husband’s ear to ear grin because he knew he done good I feel certain that they remember that day. I think this is another reason I have such a strong attachment to the scent. It was a beautiful fragrant memory. Regarding Sebastian, I was under the impression just perfume sales alone. And yes I love the collaboration with Ashley…. hope to see more of them!!

Oh, I loved the matching Gap soaps – there was something else along similar lines later on, but perhaps my tastes had changed by then.

Annie A, I am fairly certain the original four fragrances started out as soaps. Heaven,. Grass, Earth and Day. Gap bought the formulas and turned them into EDTs. Then later body products. I had the EDT, body wash, shampoo, conditioner, body lotion and candles all in the scent of Heaven. Also, the original travel sprays were metal canisters with I think about 10 ml of juice. They looked like mini Montales. And they were five dollars a piece so I had all four scents. Later came Dream, OM, Dream More and So Pink.

Ha!!! Close! Gap Heaven…man I would have loved to keep my Gap grass!!! But I coneheaded through that one!!!! Also, Gap Om….wow was that an amazing incense!!! hard to believe that when they came out in the mid 1990s they were only $12.50 for FOUR OUNCES. Yeah, I know I sound like a broken record but it is mind boggling to me.

Sebastian of Smelling Great Fragrances said on one of his recent reviews that the revenue for Chanel’s Fragrances for 2017 was slightly under 10 BILLION DOLLARS….that really made my head spin…..

I remember adoring all of those Gap scents. Grass and Heaven especially. Can you believe how cheap and fun those perfumes were? Those and Colors de Benetton were in heavy rotation back in the 90’s.

CM8, my H and I also celebrate our first date as an anniversary. It’s about 6 months apart from our wedding anniversary, which we also celebrate, and falls a couple of days from my birthday. So we do 2 anniversaries every year – one in winter and one in summer.

            Congrats!

I had one of those Gap scents, too, and wore Colors of Benetton, but the latter I had in the mid/late 80s and the Gap about 10 years later. Maybe I was just late to the party with Gap?

          • chocolatemarzipan8 says:
            23 August 2018 at 2:44 pm

kpaint- our marriage anniversary is in June but since we did not have a wedding for some odd reason I never feel compelled to celebrate it….every year Mr. CM8 asks me if I want to go out and 9 times out of 10 I say NO.

The original Gap scents came out in 1994..the Benettons were in the 80s…nope you weren’t late to the party 🙂 do you remember which Gap scent you had? I thought for the money they were all well done.

In two dabs of vintage Obsession from a mini. I smell so good imo. This is the one that started it all, it’s still true love…big hair, shoulder pads and all.
Made a quick out of town sans kids in celebration of our 25th wedding anniversary and today it’s back to real life. I’ve been following along in the comments and everyone has been smelling great!

Well I am back to school, 9 days in…so I am checking back in with NST.

I just received a sample of Jovoy Remember Me. I am liking it but still deciding if I want a bottle of it. They had another scent I tried at Perfume House years ago but I forgot the name. I really liked it but it only came in a very large bottle. I would be much more likely to buy if companies did 30 or 50 ml at least. 100 ml is lives a long time when you have several you like, they go on for ever and there are always new ones coming that are tempting.

I just go the 2018 The Guide in the mail from Fumerie. Only read the forward so far but I love perfume book….any one else reading it?

I’m glued to the new guide, stayed up late last night reading and looking perfumes up on fragrantica.

I love Jovoy Ambre Premier. It starts off sweet and winds up in the boudoir.

I am with you there – even if it’s not as good value a 30 ml bottle is vastly less daunting. The last 100 ml I bought was Caron’s third man, and my heart sinks at how little I have used up, knowing I never will.

I am, too. I’ll happily pay more per ml to get a reasonably sized bottle, and spend less overall.

I suspect one of the reasons perfumes come in big vats is that people feel like they’re getting some kind of “deal” – particularly when it’s an overpriced bottle by a luxury brand.

    Wearing vintage JOY edp

It’s so good – this was my mom’s special occasion scent, but that doesn’t bother me, sometimes I don’t like to wear my grandmother’s perfume though.

I don’t see how Dior is able to copy the font of the old Joy on their new Joy – but I guess they’re purchasing Jean Patou, so that’s how they get away with it? I think ripping off the font bothers me most of all!

        thanks PL67!

There have been a lot of comments on the dior joy fragrantica page calling the “haters”, “immature”, etc. I guess if you just think of perfume as a product, and no matter what is produced you feel an obligation to smell it objectively, i get it. But, I don’t think it is – the name and the bottle and the story are all part of the experience. since there is so much product now, people in the next generation won’t associate people they love with these glamorous stories. It’s not the end of the world, but I don’t think we should be called haters 🙂

Wait, the new Dior Joy is the old Patou?

The font and packaging look very Dior to me (like modern Dior makeup.) It is rather horrid IMO, but Dior bottles have been quite spotty over the years.

No, people are just complaining that they a) bought Patou and then b) reused the name Joy. I am assuming they will keep making Patou Joy? If it turns out they are going to axe Joy, that would be just amazing.

Oh, I didn’t realize they’d bought Patou. Funny that it takes “20 years” to come up with a “new” fragrance with the same name as a perfume in their own catalog.

You are right, they are using the Dior font, but it’s the JOY in all caps that bothers me.

They are very similar with few appreciable differences to my nose. The 2015 version is slightly sweeter whereas the 2007 is slightly spicier. Some folks on Fragrantica complained about reformulation of the EDT before the EDP even came out but my nose detects very minor differences with these EDT versions. We can all sleep a bit easier tonight now…so long as you ignore major US news stories I suppose. ????

SOTD is Incense Pure by Sonoma Scent Studio, I adore the incense and amber notes.
A new coworker is also a budding perfumista ~ when I was doing her New Faculty orientation she commended on how much she adored the scent. She loves amber, incense and gourmand scents so I’ve created a bunch of samples for her. We’ll have fun sniffing at lunch today!

No smoothie for breakfast, was running very late; I made cranberry nut granola crunch bars last night and had one of those instead. Between this and coffee, I am nearly bouncing off the walls. 😉

Another amber I adore is Ambre by Reminiscence Paris. It has loads of musk, labdanum and benzoin which reads incense on my skin.

And a happy surprise this morning, a coworker gifted me with a big bottle Chance as a thank you for helping her with several difficult job searches. What a nice way to start a Thursday! 🙂

The SAs are even worse than the smell (through no fault of their own – the company gives them a minimum number of times they must approach each customer). I usually avoid but the MoA has testers of the whole perfume line.

I usually avoid but they make one of my HG hair products so I had to go in recently.

I guess the mandate explains why the SA was trying to sell me on the product I had in my hand that I told her I was repurchasing, thus blocking me from getting to the cashier?

I feel comfortable spritzing at Sephora, Ulta, and the rundown Macy’s near me that hardly has any SAs. I love browsing at airports; I seem to be allowed to kill time in peace. Otherwise, I grant myself the occasional blessing of buying samples online to avoid the pushy SA experience.

Wearing Elixer des Merveilles. I drained the generous sample on vacation in England a couple of summers ago and then bought a 50 ml after I came home, and have used maybe 5 ml since. It might be too close to Fleurs de Sel and Midnight in Paris, or that I don’t like salty perfumes as much as I thought I did.

    Commando no more!

SOTD = Chanel No. 19 EDT

This had been a strong like (using Petunia’s scale) from the get-go and remains there. It is a mainstream Chanel and is easily found everywhere that Chanel perfumes are sold.

I was annoyed at a barista at a fake Starbucks (essentially, one run by our food services vendor instead of company-owned). The baristas know what I drink in the morning as I am a creature of habit – a tall red-eye with a lot of room for milk (the room is really so that I get the buzz of the espresso shot much quicker than having to consume the filled to the top content. 4 our of 5 times, they get it right. So, today, I made it a point to mention “a lot of room for milk” and the barista said “yes, I know”. When I got my order, it was filled to the brim. You should have seen the smoke coming out of my head! I eventually got a new one prepared. It had happened elsewhere too and some baristas looked at me funny as they pour some of the liquid out — you would think that THEY should know it’s not the same as having a lower volume of regular coffee to begin with. Anyway, I complained to the manager

In other news, I am taking off next Thursday and Friday to enjoy a nice long weekend. I will be spending part of that time going through my stuff to select items to donate. My goal is to donate 200 items (and a pair of socks will count as 1). As an incentive, I will reward myself $1 for every 2 items donated up to 200 items; anything above 200 items will be $1:1. The total will be my budget for the split meet (joining others, not the ones I’m hosting). Sounds like a plan? Good! Wish me luck!

I recently had a very good latte at Starbucks. A rare occasion indeed.

I used to go there a lot as they really are ubiquitous in Seattle, and particularly just outside of town, there are lots of drive-throughs, which I very much appreciate (and miss.) They also made one of the few decaf beans I could drink – and I say that in the past tense as most stores recently stopped carrying it.

The lack of stores where I’m living now more or less forced me to try other options, and I’ve found a local place I love that makes a delicious decaf bean that’s truly decaf. I am thrilled.

Good for you! Happy you found a bean that agrees with you. There’s a local bagel shop here that I discovered the first week I was in town. I’m not a coffee snob and will drink pretty much anything, but when I tried the coffee from this place, I was pretty delighted. I forget the brand of bean they use, but next time I visit, I will make a note of it because the coffee was that good.

I only drink decaf and one that works for me can be hard to find. Smaller roasters generally only make 1 option, and I’ve found that the smaller companies’ decaf is not always entirely decaffeinated.

One thing that doesn’t seem to exist in Cleveland is the coffee card. I had no idea that was just a Seattle (or west coast) thing. No earning free drinks!! (If you ask about such a thing, they’ll look at you like you’re nuts.)

I like Starbucks coffee but it doesn’t like me. They must have found a way to put extra caffeine in their coffee and I like to sleep at night. At least a few hours. I’m sensitive to caffeine so I need to stick with DD or other wimpy brands.

Smelling purdy today in No. 19!

BTW, I would love more info about Bonheure (sp?). Unlucky Scent is out of samples. Boo! Do you think that it leans masculine? And anything else you would like to share? Read the SH write up and hoping to squash the instant lemming it created. ????

Hey Petunia! If a Dunkin’ Donuts were to be closer, I would go occasionally. I do still prefermStarbucks.

Bonheur is incensey although not particularly masculine to my nose but YMMV. I did not get much of the vanilla / tonka drydown likely because I did not wear it long enough to get to that point. I may pair this with a tiny spritz of Tihotato get the vanilla from the get-go. I may be able to share my sample ????

I’m in another perfume from my Makeup Alley days, Leslie Blodgett Bare Skin. Does anyone remember this one and still have/wear it? It’s a 2009 release that was exclusive to Sephora, but it still can be found on eBay. I remember blind buying it from eBay back in its day for a good price. It’s a warm sandalwood, anise and musk sun-warmed-skin scent wirh great longevity.

It’s more of a neglected love than a demoted perfume. I’m having a hard time coming up with those because I try pretty hard to get rid of perfumes that don’t “do it” for me anymore. What happens most often is perfumes that I still really enjoy don’t get enough wear because of how many damn perfumes I have!

Having purchased not the most recent version of the discovery set, I’ve thunked Monserrat and Feu Secret, am ready to swap or give Five and Room 237, and plan to hold onto Lampblack for reference (can’t decide whether I like vetiver).

Also thunked my Au Dela Narcisse sample, and midway through the Unsettled (can’t decide how much I like sandalwood).

I’ve worn Fontevraud once and I’m definitely enamored of it. A tropical Mitsouko. I agree fall feels like the right season for it.

BF is quality and I find the visual imagery really compelling. I might invest in an FB, but not sure which.

Robin, that clip took my recent nostalgia to a whole new level. Jeez, I wouldn’t say I want to relive my whole life, just from 1965 to 1979…????

I’m still wearing the elephant because I’m apparently anti-CP this week. I haven’t worn this in so long that I forgot how good it is. Or, maybe is just my way of encouraging fall to hurry up and get here. Whatever, it’s delicious!

I went to the bike store and bought a brain bucket yesterday and asked the guy about beginner trails in the area. He gave me some good ideas that I probably never would have found on my own. I asked him about the trails I scoped out the other day north of town..This was his response…

    “No. You’ll die.”

He said that with a straight face, so I guess better abide by his wisdom. In other good news, my van build guy will be here in two weeks to start the van build. I’m in the process of ordering flooring, solar supplies, batteries (expensive!),etc. So stoked to get this going! He thinks 2-3 weeks to complete. On my days off I will doing menial chores to help out but not mess anything up. Here’s to hoping I learn a little bit! ????

It was/is quite difficult to get an exercise routine when the way you live your life changes so drastically. It’s quite a learning curve, but I’m sure I will get a handle on it. Eventually. I’m pretty resilient. ✌????

Way to go with you life plans!

Paul Newman has a camp in CT, I think, called the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp. It’s a first rate all expenses paid camp for children with life-threatening illnesses. There are also some weeks when siblings of kids with life-threatening illnesses go as well but they don’t mix. I may have mentioned that one of my nieces has a very rare congenital blood disorder. She’s doing well but has a life-long dependency on synthetic clotting factors which she manages herself. When I hear criticism of big Pharma being greedy, I always think there’s the flip side of the coin where were it not for their generosity, my sister and brother in law would have been bankrupt once the lifetime cap of $2MM from my sister’s work insurance was reached. Thank God big pharma donated all that my niece needs. OK, I get emo when I think about how much my niece has accomplished considering what she has is “not compatible with life.”

I think just about everything in life is a double edged sword. There are so many perspectives and personal experiences to any single situation…

In By Kilian Straight to Heaven today, and I smell GREAT! A kind NSTer sent me a decant of this, and I wasn’t particularly interested in it the first couple times I tried it. I noticed the perfume level was much lower than it should’ve been, given how rarely I’ve tried it, and I thought I would wear it today before it all evaporates away. Today, it smells fabulous 🙂 So I guess I’m doing the opposite of the CP today.

Tonight, I’m going to department stores with a friend to help her pick out a new fragrance. She’s been wearing DKNY Golden Delicious until now, and wants a new perfume or two to shake things up. Suggestions of things to try? I think we’re going to Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, and Bloomingdales, if that gives you an idea of what scents we’ll find (I have no idea what to expect).

In honor of our perfume hunt in fancy department stores, I’m back on Project Dress Nicely, but just for the day 🙂 Pulled my suede boots out of hiding to help with the cold weather!

I’m sampling Onda edp and the Voile d’extrait. I think I’m in love with the edp. They both end up in the same place after the opening, but the voile has something early on that I don’t care for, whereas the edp is just swoonworthy from the start (and I don’t even like vetiver, it must be the honey I like). Deva, have you tried this?

If there’s enough interest, I’ll split a bottle during the splitmeet.

Yes, I’ve tried the edp and the vde both, but I much prefer the vde. It will be the perfume I never own, which makes me sad. I’m trying to look at it as an exercise in restraint and non-attachment (which is against my inherent religion!) so I don’t end up old and bitter. Maybe this loss will make me wise and humble. Maybe not. ????

I’m quite sure you’ll find takers if you do a split. A full bottle is out of my comfort zone, price wise. I’m sure others feel the same, but would jump at the chance of a decant from a split.

      Good luck!

In the second of my Satori samples, inspired by the new Perfumes The Guide 2018, Hana Hiraki. Luca Turin calls it a “melon floral. . . from another planet,” and gives it the coveted 4 stars. This baby turns out to be way too alien for me. I get cantaloupe/honey dew and vitamins, not in a good way.

Repeating my APB: Desperate fumie! Anyone have decants or bottles of Stephen Jones edt that they are bored with and want to jettison for trade or purchase? Please let me know: ann dottie eisenberg attagirl comcast dottie ner

I tried several Satoris a year or so ago, and wasn’t captivated at that point (but I only had dauber samples, and haven’t retested in other seasons). The one that intrigued me, actually, was Wasanbon, the one LT did not like. I thought the opening really did evoke some kind of very special sugar, which it is intended to evoke.

Nothing to do with Pluto, but I am testing Amouage Fate Woman (2013) today. It reminds me strongly of something else, and I finally realized it’s Thierry Mugler Orient Express (2014).

I’ll have to do a side-by-side test later to see how accurate that is. Has anyone else tried both of these and noticed any similarity (or not)?

Thanks, everyone — not side by side, but wearing Oriental Express this evening it does smell different to me. It’s not sweet, and after wearing Fate earlier in the day, it feels like it’s almost going in a leather direction, relatively speaking. I also feel like Fate has changed my perception of OE, which is weird. I would also say that Fate had a certain fresh-balsamic axis that I associate with Laura Biagiotti Roma, for example. Still need to do the side by side, maybe scent strips in different rooms.

Hello everyone, I got my gift to myself box from Luckyscent of the MFK “Fragrance Wardrobe for Her,” and honestly it was the best most fun present to open! Everything in it just spoke of luxury and care. Made me feel I’d chosen a good treat for myself! Plus, they included no fewer than SIX really nice and interesting samples, some I’ll have to report on later. So far I’ve sampled all three of the Aqua scents–as expected, they are pleasant, unobtrusive, summer-light, and fun. Nothing that would knock me out (or anyone else for that matter). I wore one to my doctor’s office this morning and even though he came really close to give me a shot in my shoulder (all of my joints are crumbling!) he didn’t comment. Then again he’s kind of old and gruff, and not the type. I’m looking forward to trying some I’ve never sampled, plus now I have nice sized travel sprays of two I know I like–Oud Satin Mood and Baccarat Rouge 540. They are all in pretty, delicate colors too, and the array of pastels plus gold letters and caps is just making me happy. I hope I never fall out of love with FK because it’ll just be a real pity!

    Happy afternoon,
I haven’t commented in a while – after we finally got back to the US I got a cold and couldn’t smell much – but today I’m perfumed, and Bulgari Eau the noir, which I had tested before (it’s a 5 star in the new guide) and liked alright, but when I saw it for $20 at TJ Maxx, I bought it, and fully spritzed, it is wonderful!
I made it my mission over the summer to try as many of the 5 star scents as possible and mostly succeeded except for some hard to find stuff, and nothing had bowled me over – but perhaps I should have used a heavier hand. Anyhow, they had eau the rouge as well, and the shower gels, all on clearance.

That’s a major mission! Also a reminder that our response to perfume is almost entirely emotional (from my perspective, anyway.) While I trust the Guide’s noses (and always have fun reading them), their loves are rarely mine – and vice-versa.

Wearing Eau du Fier which is as close to Lapsang Souchong as perfume can get. Lapsang with apricots that is. Love it, and just can’t get enough of sniffing myself having spent most of my day without scent. Forgot to put any on this morning.

It’s a perfect late summer day, weather-wise, for me. Sunny, and 79F, which is around 26C. But I am in A Mood today, and not fully able to enjoy said weather. Got some sad news from a friend yesterday, and it has been on my mind since. A relative of hers passed away. It seemed kind of sudden to me, but I don’t know the backstory. Sigh.

SOTD = Elizabeth & James Nirvana Black. I have a rather nice travel spray that was a VIB giveaway from Sephora. I like Black, but even 30mL of it is too much for me, I think. It’s a pity that the travel sizes are rollerballs instead of sprays, or I would have purchased one a while ago. So I’m sorta on track for the CP?
