Monday scent of the day 8/20

Posted by Robin on 20 August 2018 248 Comments

Indeed, it is Monday again, and if that's not enough good news for you, it's also World Mosquito Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in my old summer standard Carthusia Mediterraneo.

Reminder: on 8/24, in honor of Pluto Demoted Day, wear a fragrance you used to obsess over, but don't care so much about anymore. If you can, tell us why you don't love it anymore. Suggested by Katrina.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

It’s more like anti-mosquito day – “a commemoration of British doctor Sir Ronald Ross’s discovery in 1897 that female mosquitoes transmit malaria between humans”. Ugh!

I am wearing Chanel Eau de Cologne. I like this scent, but I prefer other lemon perfumes in my wardrobe. Plus, it has a poor longevity and projection on my skin. That’s why I chose it for the CP. Will finish my decant but won’t buy again.

The name was Dr Ross’s decision, apparently.
But it’s strange. We have World Cat day, which is about giving extra love to cats. And we have World Mosquito Day, which is about being extra wary of mosquitoes. Does not make sense!

Scent Twins! I was not participating in the CP, though, just felt like Chanel EdC for a hot day. Longevity is pretty poor, though.

I also had to look up World Mosquito day. It surprises me not in the least that it’s celebrated at the LSHTM; I’ve had a few medical residents study there and it’s a pretty unique place, with its own culture.

        Hey twin! 🙂

It’s a nice lemon scent for sure. Just a bit too dainty for me.

I’m not glannys, but I love lemon too so I’ll chime in with my faves!
Carthusia Mediterraneo & Lostmarch Din Dan are very nice lemon scents, and not sweet.
Sweet lemons – Fresh Brown Sugar & Lemon Sugar (I prefer Brown Sugars – seems more lemony to me!) and Roca Nuvol Llimona.
        Happy searching!

Mediterraneo is indeed very nice, thought I tend to think of it as a bergamot/tea scent, not lemon scent. But lemon note is quite good there.

The ultimate lemon perfumes for me (lemon is strong and tart) are Eau d’Hadrien and Profumum Roma Acqua Viva. Sometimes I layer them to maximize the effect. I feel like a walking lemon tree in them!

Chanel No. 5 L’eau has an interesting lemon note, though there are also flowers and aldehydes. So the overall effect is something fresh, elegant but inedible. Chanel No. 5 mixed with lemon cologne – this sort of thing.

Blenheim Bouqet – an interesting dry peppery lemon.

I also like Dior Escale a Portofino and 4711 Original Eau de Cologne, but though lemon is noticeable there, there are plenty of other citruses, so I am not sure if I can call them lemon scents.

thank you for the lemon scent list, Glannys!

My go-to-citrus scents this summer are 4711 and Eau de Fleurs de Cedrat. 😉

4711 Original is fabulous. I am curious about Eau de Fleurs de Cedrat, but Bear described it as gossamer and fleeting… I do not expect a lot of longevity from a citrus scent, but I do like my lemons lively and zesty!
Maybe I should try scenting a scarf with Chanel Eau de Cologne. It might last longer this way and it would be nice to have a scarf scented with a dainty lemon fragrance. 🙂

So far, the No 5 L’eau is my favorite lemon. I love the flowers and the aldehyde. I like Escale a Portofino a lot (not sure why I don’t reach for it more; I reach for L’eau a few times per week and even made a really lovey body oil with it).

I have to check out all these recs. Thanks guys!

Hello everyone. Late morning today, snuggling the dog I’m taking care of this week for a friend.

I picked out vintage Eau Sauvage for today, but every time I open my closet, I second guess myself. The good thing about Eau Sauvage though is that I: 1. Have tons and 2. Have a mini to put in my bag for touch-ups. Plus, it smells like heaven.

I have a lot to do today sadly, but since I’m starting late, I don’t mind.

We just did the “pass off” of the Goldendoodle we were watching for 10 days to another family. Miss him already! It’s a lot of work to walk him 3 times a day and he needs lots of love and attention, but the novelty never wears off when you’re dog-sitting.

      Enjoy!

Off to the gym, so I’m without scent for the moment. Monday, first day of my fall semester. My classes still need quite a bit of prepping, but I am strangely not too frazzled by it all. Probably because I haven’t had my first class yet. 🙂

Post gym and shower, I’m going to look for something bright and optimistic to wear.

Getting ready to scrub off Parfait de Rôses Lancome, unfortunately. I really wanted to love this one but there’s something “off” about it. Maybe too sweet? Third try and so it’s time to move it to the freebie bag.

Ugh, I despise mosquitoes. I’m one of those people that are always getting bitten, whereas my husband they could care less about. What’s with that?

floralgal, do you have type O blood? There have been several credible studies that suggest the critters prefer O blood (and like Type A the least) and with most people, female mosquitoes can smell out the type. Also, people who tend to put out a lot of heat or have a greater lung capacity (and exhale more) are targeted more often. I’m O negative and a little furnace, so they drive me nuts.

Heh… I’m Type A blood, but I run hot and have healthy sweat glands. I’ve also heard it’s the type of bacteria on one’s skin that attracts… I must have tasty stuff….

I do think there’s something to the idea of giving off heat that determines if you are a target or not. My husband does not sweat and he never gets bitten whereas my mom gives off a lot of heat, is always complaining about being hot, and she not only gets bit all the time but she gets huge welts from being feasted on by mosquitos.

        Ok, I’m officially grossed out.

My extended family did a lot of RV and tent camping when I was growing up. If we forgot to seal up our tent at night my sister had many bites in the morning, while I almost never had one. One year my grandmother had my sister swallow a brewer’s yeast tablet each morning. It seemed to change her smell so the mosquitoes were less likely to find her in the dark.

My first love was the original EdP. EdT was fine but it didn’t warrant a separate bottle. Absolue is very beautiful. For a while I thought that I didn’t need it while I had my EdP, but now I can see wearing them both. If I had to choose just 1 to buy, probably I’d go for Absolue today.
But please try them before buying: it’s not a please-all perfume, you shouldn’t buy it blind.

SOTD: Berdoues Arz el-rab. I like this, but I think Tauer Les Annees 25 is a better, more complex take on the same ginger-iris-woods theme. I’ve been really impressed by the Berdoues Grand Crus collection so far. Nearly all the scents I’ve tried are thoughtful, interesting, and well-made for a relatively reasonable price. So far the only one I’ve actively disliked is Somei Yoshino (I can sum up my reaction in 3 words: “annoying pink floral”).

Once I get through the collection, I may wind up adding an FB to my wishlist.

After testing the set, I ended up with Assam and Kozha bottles. And decant of Selva do Brazil – but only because I missed it at a great price from Anthropologie sale and then couldn’t bring myself to paying more.

The kids made it to school without a hitch. I’m a little sad. Of course I had big plans this morning, and did none of them. I’ve been wearing a sample of Fleur Nocturne on and off since Friday. Sprayed the last spray this morning (thunk). I fell in love at first spray, but now after 4 days, it’s a like. I smell to much juicy fruit gum in it, for me to want to wear it for an extended period of time.

I just tried Fleur Narcotique last night and wasn’t super impressed. It’s VERY expensive for how it smells. It started off promising in the top notes but bored me after that. However, I also retried Woman in Gold, this time sprayed rather than dabbed and liked that one a good deal.

I’m happy to send you my FN sample that I only sprayed twice!

Hey friends, feeling really tired on this cloudy, gloomy, chilly Monday. SOTD is Glacialis Terra–I went crazy for it when I tried it in store, and got a lovely decant of it from a kind NSTer during the last swapmeet. I don’t dislike it now, but it’s really not as spectacular as I remembered. I think I’ll work my way through the decant, but I definitely will not need a bottle.

My retreat down in the cliffs of Carmel overlooking the ocean turned out to be kind of a bummer. Far fewer people are returning to the singing group this year than we had expected, so song and performance choices will have to be significantly modified. Hopefully, we will still be able to make some good music together. I guess I’ll find out. We did see a bunch of sea otters, though.

We are friends as well as fellow singers, and so I had a great time hanging out with friends in a beautiful place 🙂 But the final tally of who’s going to join to group and what our song structures will be came at the very end of the weekend, so it ended on a sad note 🙁

Much discussion revolved around whether this was a lull in membership or a downward trend! Hopefully this is just a break. I know a lot of people are going through life changes (moving out of the area, changing jobs, going back to school). We’re all pretty young–the youngest are 22 (just out of undergrad) and the oldest person is 32 (I’m close to the oldest!). We all FEEL like we’re nearly the same age.

We’ve also wondered about whether we’ll need to put a lower cap on age as we all get older 🙂 Will we want to sing with a bunch of 22-year-olds when we’re 40? But I figure, how many 22-year-olds would want to sing with 40-year-olds? Not many, I’d suppose!

I am certainly not playing along with the CP. I’m in Shalimar Light, which I’m still pretty obsessed with. Will do better the rest of the week.

I’d like to thank my 3 year old nephew for renewing my love of Fleetwood Mac. He’s currently on a Stevie Nicks kick thanks to my sis and he loves to watch their Dance Tour concert from ’97 ha! I rocked out to “Go Your Own Way” on the way to work and it certainly improved my mood. A link is below…hope it helps you as much as it did me.

He watches that Fleetwood Mac concert and will clap after every song and say, “Yaaaaay, Stevie!” The funny thing is though, that no matter who sings to him now- me, my mom, or sis- he always claps and says, “Yay Stevie!!!” 😀

I love Mondays now since I don’t have to work them anymore. Out for a peaceful bike ride and threw on some Cedre Sambac from a sample. There is something in here that I definitely don’t like….a note like burnt rubber or plastic. It could be the thick layer of smoke that’s hanging over the city so I’ll try again once the air clears.

SOTD: Iris Prima from a mini off ebay which I recently acquired. I love this scent, but I’m surprised how soft it is (my sample was so strong when dabbed, but I’ve poured the mini into a spray decant container). It’s such a pretty iris with an odd edge that smells like suede-y bandaids. I just love it.

Participating in the CP with Tocca Stella. It was one of the first non-mainstream perfumes I bought when I discovered the perfume community circa 2007 or 2008. I still enjoy it but not as much now that I’ve smelled more stuff. It’s a bit more clean and fresh than the perfumes I usually choose these days.

Also, the perfume is on my s*#* list today because I had a leaky sprayer malfunction that left two big stains on the white blouse I had on. I had to change into a different top and stain stick it up, which got me running behind schedule. I also happened to sleep very poorly last night and am still feeling lingering effects in my sinuses from the smoky air I breathed in yesterday. Monday is off to a bit of a rough start!

I’m in Le Labo Tubéreuse 40 this morning, and it’s not very tuberose-y. It’s actually pleasant, though a bit on the sweet side; it’s got another strong floral in it too, maybe the mimosa? I really love the tuberose viriginale from HDP. What’s your favourite with this note?

Agree, the le labo is not very tuberose-y. 😉

My tuberose-love started with Oscar several decades ago. It’s hard to choose just one. Jardins de Bagatelle is a favorite. I really like Gucci Bloom. I think I’m in love with Luci ed Ombre. 34 boulevard Saint Germain is wonderful, the tuberose is very prominent when I wear it.

I used to wear Jardins long ago but haven’t revisited it in years. I do like Bloom, too. But I’ve not tried the other two you mention, and will do so. Thanks! How about Mahora, the notorious one? It’s got a lot of wf’s but to me the tuberose really stands out. That is, it seems realistic as to both the good and the bad side of this strange but compelling flower. (If I ever buy a bouquet of them, I wind up putting them out on the porch for awhile! Like hyacinths–the same–can get to be too much of a good thing.)

I’m wearing Phlur’s Hanami today. It’s really nice, but I originally wanted to wear Olmstead and Vaux. However, I tried a new conditioner that left so much fragrance in my hair that I had to choose a perfume that wouldn’t clash with its patchouli/vanilla self. (Hanami isn’t patchouli/ vanilla, but it’s not fighting with it.)

Have a happy Monday. Off to ponder my feelings about mosquitoes…

I’m back after a 4 month scent hiatus; pregnancy morning sickness turned me off to all smells. I’m easing back into things with L’eau des merveilles, sprayed very lightly. I haven’t read the blog in a while since even thinking about scent set me off, so maybe I’ll scroll back through some older posts and see what I missed.

Taking advantage of cooler temps today in ELDO Yes I Do. I got a decant when I was on an obsessive LOTV kick in the Spring. That obsession has died, but I still like this one, though it never reached obsession levels. I think my decant will suffice.

Just saw the obligatory fall Pumpkin Spice coffee creamer and a bag of PS Granola so far. I did pick up the granola and was pleasantly surprised because I was expecting a huge artificial pumpkin taste, but it’s quite subdued and natural. Great on vanilla yogurt with a sprinkle of cinnamon and a drizzle of honey. ????

The smoke and heat are back in a big way here until Wednesday night. I’m sampling Petits Papiers this morning, it’s nice but not bottle-worthy. I think it’s funny that when I started out as a perfumista, most everything smelled so new and different I was buying bottles left and right. Now many things smell pleasant but not distinctive enough to buy. I can see myself joining Robin in being able to go a long time without purchasing anything, and I understand better Turin and Sanchez’s reviews of perfectly nice scents as only worth two or three stars.

We actually had a lot of smoke here yesterday and today from CA (not sure where you live). It’s the first time I’ve ever experienced it. It was on the Albuquerque news and they were warning people with breathing problems to stay inside and there is a constant haze/smoke look in the air.

I’ve only been a perfumista of sorts for less than two years. My problem is that I have quite the FB list and I just don’t see the point in sampling much until I make a dent in my existing list. Well, I always love to sample, but have a hard time BUYING samples when I feel that money could go toward a FB. I am fairly picky though about what goes on my FB list so I’ve rarely removed anything from the list once it’s made it on there.

Thunked a Dame Passion Fruit Orange Blossom Vetiver sample. It was one of the tiny dabbers, so I used quite a bit and it’s just barely registering a few hours later – I’m thinking it needed a spray. Off to find something else for the afternoon.

I would have worn Le Galion Snob for the CP… but… I saw the sample of Guerlain Meteorites parfum and went with that instead. I would say that I was pretty obsessed with Snob for a while. It’s so bright; almost blinding white in my mind. But lately, it’s felt a little screechy. Could be the sinus issues I have had lately but it just makes me think it will be too loud and prickly to wear. Maybe in fall?
I am enjoying Meteorites. It fits in the same category in my mind; crispy light colored florals. Not light in terms of sillage but in terms of colors that the scent brings to my mind. This would be a opaque very pale pink. The violet turns off my 10 year old daughter (thanks, Howard’s violet candies!). I won’t be actively looking for a bottle but maybe more when my sample runs out?

Spent a couple of hours discussing home health aide and a future nursing home for my dad this morning, so I’m a little down. There have been much cooler temps for the past couple of days in my area. I think yesterday it did not even get up to 80F! I doubt that will last, but it is an early taste of fall. ????

SOTD = Diptyque Tempo. I’m back to playing in my sample stash! This is definitely a summer weight fragrance for me… it seems a lot lighter than I remember it. Then again, the last time I wore it, I think it was during a heat wave. It smelled fantastic then, and it still smells pretty darn good now. Just feels a little subdued to me.

Sup-ah late today. SOTD is/was OJ Ta’if. Does not tie in with the cp. I have always loved it to pieces.
I made a quick dinner tonight of pan seared Bomster sea scallops in my cast iron pan. The pan puts the perfect crust on them. I also made native corn, which is at it’s peak in my area and a tomatoe basil salad from the garden. Wish we could eat this way all year.

Sounds great! Very healthy and well rounded. Cast iron is amazing! Not sure why I never bought one because the non-stick properties of it are better than any non-stick pan I ever bought. And, as you said, the crust- on anything from bread to scallops to chicken…!When the very first pancake in the pan doesn’t stick and flips beautifully, it qualifies as a minor miracle to me. I’m just lightly wash mine, put it on a low burner to thoroughly dry, and then wipe with flax seed oil. It’s magic!

Ha, ha. I knew you’d read my post. Too bad that I can’t spell tomato… ???? I use my cast iron pan at least once a week. It’s so versatile. Mine is so old that it is black from years of use and seasoning. It sounds like you have the care of your pan down to a science and already a pro at cooking all kinds of things! I channel my grandparents every time I use mine because I remember seeing them use it. I really love that.

Ha! Didn’t even pay attention to tomatoe! I agree, when you have something that has a history and wonderful memories attached to it, it’s so much more than just a possession. It’s a tangible way to connect to the intangible.

Petunia, you had a question yesterday about why spinach may be good to lighten dark under eye circles. This is my own theory only: Vitamin K in large doses can interfere with blood clotting (studies have shown); with spinach being rich in Vitamin K, it may help promote a breakdown of what is making the circles dark.

I’m in Diptyque Everything but the Kitchen Sink again (aka 34 boulevard Saint Germain in the black cap). This is a chameleon and a colorful one at that.

Crazy Rich Asians was a very cute rom-com, handled beautifully by the author / screenwriter/ director (all different people). What would have been a large tangled web was boiled down to just the essential characters. The movie departed from the books (yes, it strayed into Book 2) to make things flow faster. There’s still a lot of story-telling to do and the teaser in the middle of credits makes me think that CRA #2 is in the works.

Cleaned up at Marshall’s today! I had not really purchased much of anything for more than a year now so I think I just went plumb crazy! Discontinued Pacifica Waikiki Pikake and the fig one, also Tibetan Mountain Temple. They were $8.99. How could I resist? Also a bottle of SJP Lovely and the lotion and the small bottle of Angel Muse. I spent right around 50 bucks. Practically free, right?

You have me sitting here comparing Jimmy Choo and Muse right now. I can smell a similarity. I think Muse is much creamier, and sweet though. I keep the JC for sentimental reasons but don’t wear it anymore because I think it’s bad luck (I’m a weirdo, I know) love Muse though, I want to try the edt.
