Lazy weekend poll ~ open thread, Aretha Franklin edition 2018

Posted by Robin on 18 August 2018 268 Comments

Aretha Franklin

PSA: our next swapmeet will be held on September 8, to be followed by a freebiemeet later that month and a splitmeet in October.

Meanwhile, it's finally the weekend, and we're honoring the life of Aretha Franklin (1942 - 2018) with our regular open thread poll. Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, your favorite Aretha Franklin song, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

Extra reading: Rolling Stones has lots of Aretha features this weekend, including Aretha Franklin: My Favorite Songs of All Time.

Still dealing with unwanted houseguest, feeling cranky about it. I’m wearing CdG Black to match my mood.

I’ve been through a couple of months of housing someone who overstayed their welcome so I sympathize a lot. I hope it will resolve rather sooner than later.

SIL invited herself for 6 days, which is bad enough, but it comes at the tail end of a near continuous string of guests since July 1st. I have had MORE than enough.

Gah. That is the worst. On top of feeling a little put out and a little invaded, I wind up being a little mad at myself for not feeling more generous… Ah, but when the person leaves, RELIEF! Hope your spiritual Rolaid is just around the bend.

She is leaving Tuesday… I hope. Last year we took her to the airport and I breathed a huge sigh of relief, only to get a call three hours later her flight had been cancelled and she was coming back for another night. Gah!

Oh, ugh. I have a three day rule about staying at someone’s house and then I bounce. Always nice to leave a gift and thank you note or take them out to dinner as a ‘hey, thanks for hosting me’.

I might have accidentally “missed” that phone call.

Rest in peace, Aretha, and thank you for all the beautiful music that made my brain think and my feet dance.

I’m in SL Tubereuse Criminelle, from a sample thanks to a kind NSTer. I’m typically not a BWF fan, really, I’m NOT. But I like this quite a bit, and I’m so surprised! I don’t need a FB, but would love a decant of this one!

That’s the lesson…TRY IT. If you really don’t like it, you can remove it, shower it off or wait a bit and try something else later. But you might surprise yourself. ????????????

Have a lovely Saturday, lovely people!!

My favorite Aretha song is Until You Come Back To Me. Followed closely by a dozen others.

SOTD is Zoologist Bat. Of all of the samples I’ve been testing from this house (from the Regina sample extravaganza pack), I’ve decided that I might need this one, and Camel, in a travel spray. I also really like Dragonfly. And Moth.

Otis Retting and Aretha can have a needed chat now… she certainly has a civil rights history and she even sang his song at the marriage of two men.

Q for all: what will the industry say as 2019 evolves and the 50th Anniversary of that “silly bar fight at the Stonewall Inn where the NYPD last used year gas” begins to cement itself deeper in history than just the few hundred Pride chapters (Christopher Street Liberation Days in some German cities). With exhibits at NYPL and more in addition to WorldPrideNYC2019.org how will every smell. It certainly is not time for the 1,000 red roses found when you open a bottle of Joy. It should be gender neutral, make a statement and be as present as a Gucci Artwall splashed everywhere. Benetton approved, Catcheral timeless… I shouldn’t be giving you images, its also the moon landing and Woodstock’s 50th year…

I look foward to the offerings and how they are presented. Make the packaging worth keeping. The artwork ethetial and gritty.

I remember being in 3rd grade, watching Aretha on American Bandstand (or some such show…)

When I lived in D.C. in my 20s my friends/colleagues and I hung out a lot at a dive bar with the best juke box in town. “Respect” was the most popular choice and a huge memory of that period of my life. I looked at her list of favorite songs and loved that “In the Midnight Hour” was on there. While in D.C., I saw Wilson Picket open for James Brown at a midnight show (Constitution Hall). Another favorite memory.

So…in honor of all that, I’m wearing Aliage today. It was my signature scent back then.

It’s probably a cliché but I adore Freeway of Love. She just sings the hell out of it and everybody involved is having so much fun. It’s a relatively simple pop song but you can immediately see why she was one of the greatest singers ever. I could listen to it over and over again. (I’m listening to it right now.)

I’m wearing a few drops of ELdO Rossy de Palma, which I can’t quite convince myself Aretha would have worn (I imagine her in lush orientals), but who knows?

Just finished making French Toast for the first time in ages and it was delish! T-Rex was happy to provide dishlicker duties.

Wafting a bit of Epidor today and smelling properly womanly and feminine. I won’t mention my saggy 5 year I old Old Navy workout capris and my equally baggy free t-shirt from Planet Fitness (emblazoned across the chest: “Be Free”). Trying to plan some activities since I’m off until Friday, so I’m sure I can come up with something…!

Another legend lost. Geez, what a life and talent! So many outstanding songs! If I had any talent at all, I would emulate Aretha, because she was one classy gal. RIP Lady A!

R.I.P. Aretha!????. I love many of her songs, especially Respect, Think, Freeway of Love. What a talent!

Wearing Thierry Mugler Womanity. I have forgotten how much I enjoy this scent.

Nothing especial going on this weekend. The same rutine of doing shopping, running errands, cooking, cleaning, taking a long walk in the park with my dog and probably stopping over at my sister’s place later today or tomorrow.
I might make a big bowl of guacamole and some artichoke/spinach dip that I have been craving for lately.

Can anyone please recommend any good product, even natural that helps with dark and baggy eyes? I am dealing with that for a couple of months alredy and I do not know exactly what to use. Any recommendations will be appreciated.

    Have a great weekend everyone!

I would recommend It Cosmetics Bye Bye Undereye creme. It’s a light blue co!ored cream, as I’m not sure if they have other eye targeted products that may confuse the issue. I used it more for moisturizing originally but then one morning I noticed the dark circles dramatically diminished!

House twins! I have a dark circle trick. I’ve been using Lancome color corrector in Peach, underneath my foundation and it really helps neutralize the darkness. It only takes a teeny tiny amt, so the tube lasts a long time. I believe also, if you get an eye cream with caffeine in it, that it helps with circles and puffiness.

I was going to suggest 100% Pure’s Coffee Bean Eye Cream. I’ve been using it for years. It works and has a great texture. My skin really drinks it in and it’s not greasy.

My neice swears by eating cooked spinach every day – when she was staying with us – she would just whip some up as a snack – she made sure to get some in every day.

I think drinking water and maybe doing the Netti pot are good ideas to try to flush excess fluid out.

As with everything – no matter what you do being regular about it will help it be most effective. Good luck PL67 – let us know if you find a good solution!

Hello everyone and thanks so much for the kind birthday wishes yesterday. I was treated to dinner and will have another dinner with friends tonight and yet another tomorrow! I’m so fortunate! Plus I bought myself a nice Luckyscent gift, the women’s sampler set from MFK. Hurray! Here is a great video of Aretha with my favourite Motown artist Smokey Robinson singing a nice low-key version of one of his best songs. The link goes to Facebook but I don’t think you have to be on Facebook to hear it. https://www.facebook.com/497171740420354/videos/486454201764410/

Aretha, what a talent. Can’t pick just one, but RESPECT and Till You Come Back to Me are right at the top of the list. Crazy week, crazy weather. Trying hard to to work around the house (too hot outside!) and clean/divest….how did I acquire all this STUFF. Will be ready for the September 8th swap meet….heads up NST’ers, I plan to be generous with my swapping and try to give more than I receive.

SOTD–something grand and DIVA’ish in honor of Aretha–Maybe Portrait of a Lady for the Queen of Soul. After all, she did carry a handbag everywhere she went!!!

What an fantastic artist Aretha was – I love her music from each and every era she made it. I have recommended the documentary “Muscle Shoals” in the past – there is a great segment in it with her in the recording studio. I’m going to watch it again tonight! In this day and age of technology, of always being connected to each other both verbally and visually, the lyrics of “Call me” are so sweet and lovely – the longing to hear someone’s voice when they leave you, to know they are safe and to share some precious words with them when they “get there” is very powerful. Finally, I’m lucky to share a birthday with her! Rest peacefully Aretha – your music will always bring joy. Think I’ll wear Cristalle today. :-)

This is the first full day of a cappella retreat down in Carmel, in a member’s parents’ vacation house atop cliffs overlooking the ocean. I love this house.

Part of this weekend will be spent trying to figure out if we can arrange an Aretha song or mash-up that we can sing in her honor. It’ll be a delicate balance between honoring her and not doing her justice, but we’ll do our best for that incredible voice.

Jasmin Angelique fits the bleak, cold ocean perfectly. Definitely the right perfume choice for me to have brought this weekend!

Two Aretha songs that send shivers up my spine: A Change is Gonna Come and her rendition of Elton John’s Border Song. I love his singing, too, but her gospel soul really moves me.
At the laundromat and testing out Satori from my last Luckyscent sample order (which included Fontrevaude, La Cri de la Lumiere, MEM, Lubin Upper Ten for Her).
I really like Satori, but boy is it fleeting. I used half the sample already in one shot. This one seems like it needs serious lashings.
This was a rare sample order, and rare also in that, so far, I like all of them! Usually it’s maybe 1 out 5, if I’m lucky.
    Happy weekend, all!

I got the sample because of you and jiji(?) talking about it. It’s like picking up a faint whiff of something that smells really good but not being able to find the source nearby.
I usually like sheer lighter fare, and if this had a tad more heft and last about 2 hours longer, it’d be a lemming, for sure.

Odd question maybe, but do you actually feel “older”,or “different”,at 60,then say when you were 42 like I am now?Because I still feel like that 16yr old in 10th grade, and I still love the things I loved back then.Even still listen to that music, and it does not sound “old”…??

No, I don’t feel like I’m 60. And it still takes me by surprise when I realize that I am this age! I’m quite active, too and I find it strange when people talk about someone who is 60 as if they were practically on their death bed. I guess I don’t feel 16 anymore, but maybe 25!

I think you would like it R and I would like to know what you think. It has a long list of notes and I don’t smell any of them – on me it’s all about this awesome bitter green patchouli, with some orange peel in the opening.

SOTD = Everything but the Kitchen Sink

I couldn’t resist one more of these guess what perfume I’m wearing posts!. The clue: The name of the perfume contains a number that is a product or sum of 2 prime numbers. This perfume was made to commemorate the 50th year of the company’s founding.

    Aretha Franklin R.I.P. – RESPECT!

I may do something very rare this weekend – watch a movie! I read Crazy Rich Asians and I am very curious as to how the movie captures all the excesses and opulence. I’ve only ever encountered one Crazy Rich Asian family and they were pretty normal, flew under the radar and always travelled with discreet bodyguards. One of my cousins worked briefly as the head of marketing at one of the businesses owned by this family but he quit after a few months because the patriarch would not stop meddling. Anyway, I wouldn’t be surprised if the author of the book was discouraged from making even an oblique reference to this family.

Yes, Diptyque 34 boulevard Saint Germain. I have a sample of the version with the black top and w00t! It is more irisy to my nose than the votes in Fragrantica suggest. I think a bottle may join the family soon.

Today is my birthday and 20th wedding anniversary and (typical) the restaurant we were going to eat at tonight burnt down yesterday. So Plan B : champagne and pizza under the stars. I should probably wear No.19 to mark the day but that feels a bit fuddy duddy so I’m going with Bapteme du Feu instead.

    SotM = Arielle Shoshana
    SotA = MEM
    SotE = Eau des Merveilles

I’m so easily swayed by suggestion when it comes to perfume. Happy anniversary to Ari’s shop! I’m very glad I wore Ari’s scent this morning, it is pure happiness in perfume form. I spritzed my wrists and finished my Saturday chores with a smile.

MEM has been on my mind because it was mentioned a few times this week and especially because of Elisa P’s mention of the name yesterday. Mem can be interpreted as a word for water, fitting for a perfume, but also as “the place” in reference to deity. MEM is such a kaleidoscopic and mood-altering scent for me, so that interpretation fits nicely. If you like lavender and multi-faceted perfume then MEM is a must sniff. It tops my FB wish list.

For later I set out my bottle of EdM so I will remember to wear it this evening. It was looking a bit lonely and neglected. ;)

I am off in a cloud of MEM to do a few quick errands. Hope everyone has a fabulously fragrant weekend.

The nephew’s 21st went well last night. He’s from quite a big family, so there was a crowd. I really enjoy these occasions, my immediate family is very small, so I’m pleased I’ve found a partner with plenty of siblings and their offspring :)

I’m sitting outside in the sun writing this, it’s a bit cool yet, but one of those lovely clear days after a frosty night. I’m wearing Gold heart again, as it’s the only thing I brought with me for the weekend.

In honor of Arielle Shoshana’s anniversary, I have ordered the new travel spray of her eponymous scent – it’s high time I gave it a whirl. Have just finished gardening the ???? out of myself, and am now relaxing with a cocktail and a liberal spritzing of Chanel Cristalle. (An aside – my auto-suggester thought I should say something about The Rolling Stones Now! as I was typing Cristalle. What’s that all about?) Anyway, happy weekend everyone. ????

I dabbed on Satori Iris Homme and Bonheur by Bortnikoff Perfumes. 3 hours later …

    — faint traces of Satori Iris Homme (I will forego a FB)

    — Bonheur is still chugging along and is a lovely incensey number and I think THIS will join my collection

I’m also looking forward to your opinion of the movie. I didn’t really enjoy the book, but it seemed like just the kind of book that might make a great movie–kind of like the Devil Wears Prada, which was a dreadful book and a movie I enjoyed very, very much indeed. Anyway, NPR likes the movie, which is a good sign for me.

Hello all! :) I’ve not worn one perfume in particular as I’m trying to burn through samples. Wore Fleur de Liane on Friday evening and I adore it, it’s too bad L’ Artisan discontinued this beauty. Tried Bracken and while I loved it, the cats and hubby both hustled out of the room, that’s a ‘thumbs down’. Two perfumes I will probably purchase a FB of are SMN Patchouli and Montale’s Patchouli Leaves; these might be on my top five of holy grail patchouli scents. Great development, longevity, sillage was perfect (but a tad too much for work). Gumps SF has the SMN line, I need to swing by before they close shop.

I love Miss Aretha’s music, I’ve been listening to her Amazing Grace album (my favorite of hers) all weekend.
I’m not religious by any means, but this video reminds me of the churches I would visit when I was living in the South.

I’ve heard Patchouli Leaves is THE patchouli of all patchoulis…I need to give it a sniff. Plus, even though I’m in the minority, I love those bottles????

I really loved Patchouli leaves from first sniff. This is one that is great dabbed vs. sprayed though. It has incredible staying power and sillage! It’s one spray only for me…..

I think the bottles are so cool also. :)

I’m sampling Puredistance White today. It’s pleasant and utterly forgettable.

The one’s that are forgettable are more disappointing than the one’s that are scrubbers imo

I like White. Although, it really is just pretty. Money saved. On to the next!

I’m wearing No.5 L’eau today. I wish I would have went with something stronger. Back to school shoppers, are trying to kill me. They are worse than Christmas shoppers, because generally, holiday shoppers are in a cheerful mood. I’m Worrying that I won’t wake up in time to get the kids ready, and if I do, I’m Worrying that the bus won’t show up. Fingers crossed ????

Oh, the flipside to back to school shopping is that the kids are back in school! ????

Comparing And The World Is Yours to Alien Absolue today.

Very much in the same family to my nose.

Wait! Do those contain any vanilla? Have you gone off your Epic Vanilla Quest? And, I’d love to know your top three vanillas….????

Yes they both have vanilla. ???? The quest continues although with the heat of summer going I am wearing some florals and stuff where vanilla isn’t front and center.

My top three vanillas are Micallef Note Vanillee, Montale Sweet Vanilla and Xerjoff Lira.

On the non-vanilla front, I think Tempo is amazing and it has made me crave patchouli in general and revisit patchouli perfumes already in my collection.

Wearing Dior Mitzah from a swappity-swap while whipping up paleo pancakes and coffee. If a full bottle fell from the sky, I wouldn’t say “no.”
In fact, I might fight for it????

In other good but inconsequential news, I found my favorite lipgloss at a local Sephora! Plum Fiction is a gloss but also a stain (at least on my lips), and I love the formula to boot. A while back when I was looking for it at another Sephora, one of the SA told me it had been discontinued. Lies! All lies!

Then, as if that wasn’t fantastic enough, I found some very nice tissue weight tees at NR for a decent price. If they were just a bit longer, they’d be perfection!

Hope everyone is having a super Sunday ✌????

Another day in PdN Fig-Tea for brunch with friends and their daughters downtown. Then an unintended wandering through some stores looking at small couches….ours has died and become uncomfortable. Not $$ I want to spend right now, but it was fun testing…

A stop in Sephora where my husband sprayed on Hermès Eau de Citron Noir. Had me sniff it a few minutes later and my reaction was…nope. He liked it…but then about a half hour later he realized he didn’t. It seemed to get stronger. Very dry woods. Isn’t that always the way? You dislike something and it becomes overpowering. It’s still going strong hours later… (drowning out the vanilla scent wafting from his backpack…he spilled a Dr Pepper a few weeks back and hasn’t yet washed the bag. I noticed it as we waited for the bus…)

I’ve been so out of pocket the past few days. Good grief….just work and then constant social events. I have not seen one person today other than my fiancé and I am loving it- is that bad? The three days have been Shalimar and No. 19 and that’s all. Not terribly creative but they’re go-tos for me.

I look forward to spending some time reading through the comments and seeing how you all are this weekend!
