Thursday scent of the day 8/9

Posted by Robin on 9 August 2018 289 Comments

It's Almost-Friday, and it's Book Lovers Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm taking full credit in Acqua di Parma Iris Nobile, the original Eau de Toilette. My book at the moment: Rex Stout Over My Dead Body.

Reminder: on 8/10, wear a fragrance by Atelier Cologne, Acqua di Parma or Amouage, if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter A.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

        Amouage logic, not mine:
        XXV = Jubilation Man
        25 = Jubilation Woman

Mojave Ghost…best decision I ever made was to join the THUNK/USE IT UP club and enjoy what I have rather than saving for a rainy day.

today will be multitasking at its best. heading to the eldest’s bank to deposit her first set of paychecks (while she has hundreds of volunteer hours this is her first paid summer job…ten hours a day, five days a week with challenging campers for four dollars an hour….I am so proud of her because despite her exhaustion at the end of the day she says she loves it along with the challenges of being in charge of campers with ADHD and autism). The other two marzipans will be lunching at a Dominican restaurant (which makes smoothies so that might be MY lunch) while I go food shopping. All three (bank, restaurant and supermarket) are in the same plaza.

Stay cool folks! We are getting 98 degrees today!!!

You are the President of the Use it Up club! Your daughter is doing wonderful work. We need more people like her in the special needs community. I am forever grateful to the volenteers and workers who have helped my kids over the years. When my son was four, I was told he would never be able to speak. Because of special teachers, counsolers, and volenteers, that didn’t hold true. Glad she’s getting paid. She earned it!

That warms my heart to hear this lillyjo. Never say never is my motto and it irks me when folks project into the future with regard to special needs kids. I am happy that the prediction regarding your son’s language skills did not come to fruition.

I am truly proud of her because she has patience and understanding and a good heart which she will need when she embarks upon her nursing career next year.

Back from visiting family in Florida and so thankful for temps in only the high 80’s. Today both Enabler husband and I are wearing Tom Ford Cafe Rose. I don’t know how it can be that I have never tried it before. Enabler husband layered it over Guerlain Homme Ideal, which smelled great.

Great choice of perfume and book, Robin. I love Nero Wolfe books.

Acqua di Parma Colonia Oud (left arm) and Colonia Leather (right arm).

Barqs asked what I thought about them, so here is a mini-review of both.
For the first 15 minutes or so they are very similar – bright citrus/herbal notes (as you would expect from a Colonia scent) mixed with warm wood/leather notes. Lovely. Then, citrus notes are gone and we got two warm but very different perfumes. Colonia Oud eventually turns into a synthetic, sharp woody scent – not my cup of tea. Colonia Leather, on the other hand, remains delicious till the very end – yummy, sweet floral leather. The problem is that it is very similar to some other leather scents I already own. In the first place, it reminds me a lot of Tom Ford Tuscan Leather. So although I like Colonia Leather, I do not see the point in adding it to my collection.

Both scents have a medium longevity (I put them on about six hours ago and I still can smell them a little on my skin) but stay quite close to the skin.

Not perfume-related part of my comment. I would like to vent a little. Work woes. Yesterday I emailed a detailed list describing the things I want to be changed in a certain document (formatting and layout stuff). I made screenshots for each change, used strike-through showing what must be deleted, red squares around the paragraphs with bad fonts etc. It was a numbered list explaining everything in writing and saying which screenshot goes with which issue. Today I receive an answer that all changes have been made. Well, they skipped more than a half of the items on my list, ignoring some of the screenshots! And it’s not the first time. Grrr.

LOVE the Nero Wolfe series – I think I actually HAVE read them all, and I’m on a quest to own them all, at least in paperback form. I have one hard-copy anthology that has all three of the books featuring Arnold Zeck as the villain. If you haven’t read those yet, I’ll just say that he’s the evil-est villain Wolfe ever meets.

Craving patchouli so I am wearing and comparing Tempo and Coromandel EDT today.

In some reviews for Tempo, I saw people reference Coromandel…Tempo didn’t remind me of Coromandel the couple times I’ve worn it…will see how they compare today…and report back findings….for Science!!! :)

I loved Tempo but have never tried Coramandel. Was going to save my Tempo for cool weather testing but it turned green so I decided to use it up…I think it would be a great all season fragrance.

Tempo has violet and sage wafting through the patchouli and is a beautiful floral patchouli to my nose. Coromandel is a spicy and woody patchouli…a bit more masculine in comparison to Tempo although both are plenty wearable for either gender. I don’t know if I’ve worn Coromandel on a day has hot as today before and boy, did it bloom wonderfully in the heat…both fragrances did actually. Perhaps patchouli likes heat. ;)

Thanks for reviewing. Tempo sounds like something I may like.

I wore Coromandel last week, and I agree that it blooms beautifully in the heat. While I would not wear patchouli regularly on hot days (it’s rather overhelming!), I do get why some people say that spices and oriental notes are best worn in summer.

I think Love is d/c but is still floating around discounters. Not sure about L’Eau (which was my favorite), but I haven’t seen that one at Sephora for a few years. Same with See. Maybe Macy’s or Bloomingdale’s has it? But Sephora has cut back on perfumes over the years and seems to be pushing their “niche” offerings these days.

There is a weird little perfume shop on 42nd bet Madisin and 5th, a few doors down from Sephora) that is inside a hair salon. They have a bunch of oldies (Guerlain, Patou etc.) and had Love, Chloe last I was there, which was awhile ago. They have testers for most perfumes.

Perfect summer cologne with lemon, grapefruit and woody notes. There is also a zingy note I’m still trying to figure out. I will be wearing this quite a bit. ????.

I’m wearing a spritz of Bottega Veneta today, just cuz I had a hankering. It smells less peppery in the heat.
    Books of the moment:
From Here to Eternity: Traveling the World to find the Good Death by Caitlin Doughty. It’s like Anthony Bourdain, but death. Fascinating look at death rituals around the world. And funny!
    Calypso, David Sideris.

Saw a movie in one of the parks last night (Dr Strangelove) and it was a mosquito fest! I rummaged through my sample stash and spritzed us down with Bergamote 22 and it worked! No bites! Expensive mosquito repellant ????

It’s a brilliant movie. I’ve watched it multiple times and also own it. But I like the outdoor movies (except for the mosquitoes). This one was at a park in Brooklyn on the East River so amazing sunset and city views to boot!

Anyway, just to change it up, I’m back in Fils de Dieu today, so no credit for the project, but it’s good in the hot and humid weather. We had such severe thunderstorms last night, they woke the household!

Back from a brief trip to Santa Fe – I highly recommend Meow Wolf to anyone who’s in the area! There’s also a small bug museum called Harrell House that was surprising good. My 4 yo held a tarantula and a giant millipede; I did not.

Giving Atelier’s Iris Rebelle another shot today. It’s . . . still okay.

Honestly, the giant African millipede was the most disturbing. It was 6-7″ long and about 1″ wide, more like a small snake than a bug. Also, the insect wrangler mentioned that the millipede was a new addition and that he hadn’t been able to hold it yet, so part of me had to wonder if it was going to gnaw my kid’s hand off . . .

Oi, and I’m reading Dead Souls. I’m a stop-start-stop reader. I’ll devour half a book in a week, then leave it lingering, then restart and so on. I’ve renewed this gem three times already. Verry sarcastic, excellent writing. Its poking of 19th-century Russian bourgeoisie and corruption is hilarious. (The message itself is not ‘funny’ but the way it is told rather is.)

SOTD is SL Vetiver Oriental. I think I confessed to Donatella, but can’t remember. So, in case I didn’t, here you go Donatella! Better late than never.

A generous NSTer sent me a decant of this one and it took me a while to really give it a whirl, but when I did, I was hooked. I’ve had a bottle in my fragrancenet cart FOREVER and finally came to the conclusion that 30% off was the biggest discount I was going to get, so pulled the trigger. Plus, it was the old packaging, which makes me think I’m getting the original umtampered with formula. I experienced a bit of ambivalence when I did purchase, I must say. I don’t need more perfume, and this is diametrically opposed to my minimalistic life these days. But there was room in my little perfume box, so that how I rationalized it????????

Much running around to do today to pick up some essentials for the novelty of sticks and bricks living for the next three months. I dug out T-Rex’s crate and she hopped right in today after I set it up. It may have helped that her full food dish was in there! ???? First in the list to pick up is some type of rug deodorant or room refresher.

Happy Almost Friday! I have a killer schedule this week- three on, one off, three on. Gah! I hope I make it…

I just read that in your post above! I wish her the very best. She needs a good couple of years of experience before she travels, but it’s a great way to see the country. There is also international travel nursing, if she’s so inclined.

I will give one word of warning: travel companies can be sketchy and downright unethical. There are countless companies and it’s very competitive. Be very careful about the contract and make sure EVERYTHING is in writing. The travel company gets paid a certain amount by the hospital to place a traveler. The nurses contract is not with the hospital, but with the travel company. They pay the nurse out of that lump sum provided by the hospital. I hate to infer that the travel company will rip off the nurse, but just be aware that the less they pay the RN, the more their profit. No one is you friend and she had to have a strong backbone to stand up for herself.

I’ve had a couple of bad experiences and I have switched companies. My eyes are wide open now, but the pros still outweigh the cons for me.

There are tons of young travelers so she will meet others in her age group with similar interests wherever she goes! She’ll have a blast! ????????

The middle one is more adventurous and I think this would be an experience she would enjoy. She was originally thinking international but I told her to think about national as I conveyed all the fabulous places you have traveled to.

Oh, thanks! I started the IG account when I started traveling. Haven’t posted too much related to Reno yet because it’s just too hot to be out and about. I try to get as much done before 10am because after that, it’s just he!!ish. Definitely would recommend travel within the US first. There are many things she will be confronted with that she is unable to anticipate and having some solid experience as a foundation is key. Most hospitals will not even consider you if you don’t have a couple of years of general nursing under your belt. And even so, Is isn’t always easy to find an assignment that will consider a first time traveler. I submitted to about 10 hospitals for my initial assignment and was only made an offer by one, and I’ve many years of experience behind me.

I’ve never had a problem getting that 37% code into my cart – in fact I wonder if I Google FragranceNet 37% and the name of that perfume. But, the thing I wonder about is how much do the actual prices of the perfumes fluctuate – I wonder if they raise the prices when they give more access to that larger discounted coupon… Who knows?

Partial credit again today in Aroma M Geisha Noire. I LOOOOVE this one so much. I have a decant thanks to a split, but I hoard it. Does anyone else hoard the samples and decants they love? I don’t know why I do that when I can easily just get more…

Thanks for the positive vibes for my son yesterday. I think he’s better. He still sounds down when I talk to him, but hasn’t cried anymore or anything. It was over a job he thought he had bagged and then something came up and he can’t take it. It was good paying and would have gotten him out of retail, which he’s been working since he was 15. Plus, his girlfriend said she thought he was a bit lonely and having to adjust to living on his own. Growing up is just hard sometimes…I’m going to fly out for his birthday in a few weeks and spoil him as much as possible. Ugh, I love that kid…

Got the new edition of The Guide yesterday. Laughed and laughed reading it. As usual, I agree with some reviews, some I don’t!

Last day of 95F temps before we cool down to “only” 85F. I got a call last night that the shelter is expecting 300+ kitties displaced from California shelters by the wildfires. Local shelters are sending their adoptable animals to us so they can temporarily house animals whose owners have evacuated (or shelters that have evacuated). I may end up with a new pet….

Books–Recently I read The Corner of the Oval, Dear Mrs. Bird, and presently The Line Becomes A River. Also some very, very bad mysteries involving caterers/cooks/chefs with recipes included. Some of the recipes look good but the books are almost laughably bad. Might need some Nero Wolfe as a palate cleanser.

Perfume today is Cedrat Envirant (I keep wanting to call it environment) and I’ll wear my last Atelier tomorrow. I had no idea I had a week’s worth.

Day two of Acqua di Parma, this time in Ginepro di Sardegna. I like this one a lot! It starts off with lots of juniper, as the name indicates and then turns into a warm, sour, balsamic blend with a little bit of an incense quality – it reminds me of SL Encens et Lavande or Gris Clair in that sense. Yesterday’s Rosa Nobile has gone in my give away pile. It just didn’t make any impression and I have way too much perfume to waste time with those kinds of scents.

Gearing up for a couple long feeling days at work. Today and tomorrow it’s just my closest coworker and I working in our department. One person is on vacation and another took an unexpected day off to spend time with her daughter and new granddaughter in the hospital PLUS my boss decided to stay home because she’s not feeling well. Is it the weekend yet? Oh, and a 90 degree day to look forward to in Seattle argh.

I am wearing Caron Aimez Moi for the second day in a row. Partial credit for me. I had no idea today was National Book Lovers Day. I am going to tell my daughter. This will be right up her alley. She says she loves the smell and the sound of turning pages of a new book. I read books on my nook tablet a lot. But, she says she will never do that.

Super busy today! I can barely breathe! Looking forward to the weekend because I am very exhausted!

In L’Artisan Premier Figuier Extreme. Few drops left in a sample that I just finished. THUNK! Then, I sprayed on some more from my full bottle. Love it! I never get tired of fig scents!

Does anyone know if Iris Silver Mist was discontinued? I was checking online and I see that only Barneys is the only one selling it in the bell shaped bottles. Kind of panicking now, since I have no more than 2-3ml left on my decant.

      Breathe!!!!! and hang in there!

While I am not an SL expert I was under the impression that some of the fragrances were no longer sold in the regular bottles but were now only in the bell shaped ones and harder to come by. someone else more knowledgable will surely chime in. If that is the case maybe the bell will be your birthday present to yourself this year :)

They have now brought out a new packaging called Gratte-Ciel (skyscraper) which are 100 ml black glass Art Deco style bottles. The scents that are now in those bottles are no longer available in the bell jar bottle. However, I don’t see it listed in that collection. I can’t believe it’s discontinued though. I would order it from Barney’s since they have it for sale. You never know what’s going on at SL nowadays.

The Serge Lutens website still has Iris Silver Mist available in the bell jar, 75ml for $310. They also have a 2×30ml set for $199. Not bad. A la Nuit completely dissapeared. So sad to see those beautiful fragrances gone or almost gone. Better grab them while they are still available.

    SotD = Grand Neroli

It is grand, I love it. I’ve worn Atelier samples each day this week. Maybe I haven’t bought a bottle because the dry down on many of them isn’t as pleasing as I’d like? Or these samples are past their prime. Ah, well. Perhaps Grand Neroli will go the distance today. Thank you to holyneroli for helping me choose.

I’ve been forcing myself to rest a little each evening with my foot elevated. I clumsily banged two toes, by the end of the day they need a time out. Watching random episodes of The Office, yesterday I enjoyed the one where Jim buys his childhood home and worries that Pam isn’t pleased. I was verklempt when he showed her the garage “art studio”, then she smiles tenderly and says, “You bought me a house.” Sob-sniff-sniff. A love story for the ages.

SOTD = Atelier Cologne Silver Iris

I was originally going to wear Aftelier Vanilla Smoke but Silver Iris was within easy reach and easier to apply. It is soooo good.

I submitted a complaint to Starbucks regarding the cashier who yelled at me. I got an apologetic response, an indication that the incident will be brought to the store manager’s attention and a $5 credit. I couldn’t care less about the $5 but will gladly take it to pay towards my next drink.

That’s odd. I often hear about people complaining about rude customer service in retail, quite often in the ‘luxury’ lifestyle segment. Sort of like if you’re buying a handbag the SA might ask if you ‘won the lottery’ to do that and so forth if they happen to feel particularly bitchy. Mereckons it’s one consequence of the employer’s recruitment/wage policy.

Let’s just say that the TSA May have the most questionable recruiting policies.

I actually don’t find it offensive for an SA to remark about me winning the lottery! Basically, don’t judge a book by its cover because I am laughing all the way to the bank regardless of the reason I can afford the handbag.

Mohur Extrait for me today, beauty in a bottle. Many hours in there is rose, with some other flowers which I can’t identify starting to rise up, although some of it is orange blossom, I think. The musk comes and goes, right now it is pretty gone, but I am sure it will come back at least once more. This is pretty much the perfect perfume, for me. Mitsouko is the perfect vintage perfume, and this is the perfect modern perfume. I have done wrist to wrist comparisons with most of the other perfumes i have and love, and this one wins every time. I love Durga, but this is far more complex and elegant. I love Sea of Glass, and it would be great if BPAL could make a version of that with really high quality ingredients, but it is a lesser vehicle than these great perfumes. Ok, soliloquy over , back to the joys of hospital IT administration…

Was going to do Atelier today, but my Fiori di Capri was calling to me from my dresser top. I’ve been gone almost six weeks and missed it….

Hope Koyel made it home okay. My flight was three hours late, and I felt bad for those waiting at our gate at JFK to board their delayed flight back to SF. It did reconfirm to me that it’s the same time, if not faster, for me to subway home rather than car. The Uber driver took a very long route that I didn’t notice until we were committed. That being said, it was a relatively easy flight…good movie choices, and I got some knitting done.

Looking forward to my broader selection of scents to wear….

Speaking of planes, I’ve gone from recently having to remove shoes, all food items from my bag as well as my iPad to removing absolutely nothing yesterday. And it wasn’t a pre-cleared line. I guess it just depends on their mood each day….

You are right, Bear. I would say a good 8 years ago, a fellow traveler flying out of Newark got her knitting needles confiscated. Said fellow traveler was already in her late 70s. The lesson? Beware of old ladies with knitting needles.

Note: To avoid controversy of what age I consider old, in NST-land, no one is old regardless of age.

Dear NST friends, you’ll be happy to read that I’m finally back in California!!! After my flight on Tuesday was delayed and then canceled, I managed to convince them to give me a flight on Wednesday evening instead of their original intention, which was to put me on a Thursday 7am flight with a layover. Wednesday’s flight also had a delay, but I finally made it!!! What a fraught journey.

I’m wearing AC Clementine Californie, from the very kind madtowngirl! I think I smell good, but I’m not sure how much of what I’m smelling is the perfume. I’m wearing makeup today because I will be hanging out with a 19-year-old (boyfriend’s baby cousin) and her parents tonight, and I want to convince them all that I’m a functional adult. I know not all functional adults wear makeup, but I’m hoping this will help convince them that I don’t think of myself as a child. So anyway, I think a fair amount of what I’m smelling is my makeup. I think CC would smell even better without that rather loud note of powder.

On theme with Acqua di Parma´s Iris Nobile (EDP). It’s gorgeous, would have loved to have tried the Eau de Toilette at some point, but then again I’m plenty happy with my EDP.

Had an “amusing” incident with my washing machine this morning. I tend to be a bit generous with the washing powder, and this time the machine took its revenge and ejected all the far too soapy water. So I had a lake where no lake was supposed to be, it took some effort to get all the soapy water out, but I managed in the end; more is more is not always a good idea!

It felt a bit like Swan Lake, especially when I actually had to tip the washing machine to get rid of the last bits of soapy water. Imagine holding a heavy washing machine with two arms amid foam!

I was inspired today by several people this week with their Atelier Cologne choices, so I am on point today. Thanks for the perfumed hint!

SOTD = Atelier Cologne Vaniile Insensee. Very happy that I have the cute little travel spray of this! And it still smells as good as I remember it.

I adored this in store, got a 30 mL bottle in a swap, and now find that it gives me a dreadful headache. I think I will try to swap this away in the next swapmeet. If you finish your travel spray by then, maybe you’ll want it…!

Ah, while I am thinking of this… lillyjo, yesterday’s SOTD, the Alien Aqua Chic Legere, is a manufacturer’s sample of the purple Aqua Chic that came out in 2012. For some reason, TM put both EdT and Legere on it.

I had high hopes for 2 of my 3 nieces but alas, after a shopping spree at Sephora (“buy anything you want but it must be perfume”) when they were young teenagers and a Christmas gift with an Atelier Cologne sample set each PLUS a gift card enough to cover a less expensive 30 mL, they lost interest. So we moved on to bags…

Good idea to save Vanille Insensee for different weather. It’s one that seems to be easily influenced by heat, humidity, or the lack thereof.

I’m late posting due to life complications. I’ll survive. Not on the CP; I’ve jumped the alphabet to “I”, wearing Indult Isvaraya. Jasmine, patchouli, plum, intoxicating. Indulgent and a bit indecent.

AM: Amouage Bracken woman on my left hand, and Amouage Myths Woman on my right hand.

Do they share some sort of soapy musky base?

I thought Bracken woman was interesting and enjoyable, vegetal and woodsy in the beginning, it seem to settle down into a sweet cake.

PM: Amouage Beloved. At first spray it reminded me of something in a lot of Estee Lauder fragrances. To me it settled down into a powdery, Ambery, Coco-esque scent.

How interesting. My experience is very different. There are several animalics in Beloved. I get a strong chamomile note in the opening that I LOVE and then it settles into an animalic floral. I’ve never been a fan of Coco. It does have a vintage feel to it.

Here’s something else…I’m trying Opus i today, and it smells like your description of Beloved. I get a strong Chamomile scent at the beginning, drying down to a lovely vintage-y scent. Have you tried Opus i?

There is no accounting for my nose or ability to describe fragrance, but I don’t get any cardamom from Opus i, and I don’t get any Chamomile from Beloved.

Chiming in with Atelier Oolang Infini tonight. It’s battling the heat nicely. We are supposed to finally get some rain and cooler weather in the next few days..fingers crossed. Everyone here is so tired of the fires and surrounding smoke.

Looking forward to a relaxing weekend!
