Wednesday scent of the day 8/8

Posted by Robin on 8 August 2018 281 Comments

Happy Hump Day! Plus International Cat Day and Happiness Happens Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm getting full credit today with Atelier Cologne Santal Carmin.

Reminder: on 8/10, wear a fragrance by Atelier Cologne, Acqua di Parma or Amouage, if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter A.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Good job! The Use it Up project is giving us a good opportunity to reduce a great amount or perfume. I feel so good about it! I will finish all my summer decants and samples this week and then I will give some love to my long neglected full bottles. Once the fall/winter season starts I will do the same with decants and samples again. Let’s keep going! :)

Vetiver is a note that is not easy for me to handle. However, last night I sprayed on Guerlain Vetiver and it was amazing. The same today with AG Vetiver, which I am enjoying a lot. I think I need to wear them when the heat is at its max!

Vetiver was a favorite when I lived in Florida. Instant refreshment! (well, that and a stiff gin and tonic with extra lime)…

I liked it because of the kumquat note…but I have seen others mention that they don’t like it.

I find that the Jardin series from Hermes doesn’t last beyond 5 min on me, but this one lasts a bit more. How about you?

          • chocolatemarzipan8 says:
            8 August 2018 at 3:30 pm

Ha!!! you are talking to the person whose skin literally devours scent (remember how quickly I went through the Eau de Campagne?) so yes, it is most definitely fleeting. I find the Hermessence to be the same. I tried all of the new ones (including the oils) on different parts of my body when I went to SAKS a few weeks ago and they seemed to disappear after 5 minutes. I would probably have to spray half of the travel spray for it to last!!!!

          • chocolatemarzipan8 says:
            8 August 2018 at 3:30 pm

oops I misread that! NOT fleeting on you but definitely fleeting on me!!!!

Hermes is never been a house that has worked for me. That and J. Malone.
            I keep trying..
Galop was nice. Myrrhe Eglantine, Citron Noir and Rhubarb something..I can’t remember the name..are the ones I have tried from the Hermessence line.

Hope you had a wonderful day at the museum. Years ago when my kids were little, we spent many happy hours riding the trains into and around the city, then wandering the halls of the museum. It was great fun and very child-friendly.

I mostly agree with SunnyDay’s comment below, but I do smell a tiny bit of rootiness in it early on (nowhere near Iris Silver Mist though). It is definitely fresh in character – it has a “freshly ironed linens” vibe – and is a fairly uncomplicated iris on my skin, except for a very faint and almost incense-like extra note in the far drydown.

Happy cat day to cats and cat lovers all over the world!

SOTD is Acqua di Parma Gelsomino Nobile. A nice fresh green jasmine. Unfortunately it has this cheap ‘air freshener’ note that sometimes crops out.

I think I’ve gone shower product crazy. First Lush shower gels, then two Korres shower gels (Jasmine and Mint Tea), plus two small Lemongrass House shower gels (Neroli and Lemongrass), and today I used my ‘extra’ loyalty discount at StrawberryNet to buy Bvlgari Eau Parfumee Au The Bleu Shampoo & Shower Gel and Etro Anice Perfumed Shower Gel. Because $37.80 for both seems cheap for Etro and Bvlgari. I partly blame NST and ‘what’s in your shower’ poll. :D

No, I have not tried it before and I am rather disappointed by how it smells from the bottle. Green – check, minty – check, but it’s a cheap synthetic mintiness I would expect from a shower gel bought in a mall. Maybe I will like it better in the shower.

My THUNK report for the last week: one sample of Unsettled, one BBW body cream in The Beach, and a decant of FM Magnolia, which is my sotd, because it was mentioned here a few times latley. This is balanced out by the weekend “what’s in your shower?” Poll, because I promptly went to BBW and bought 2 shower gels and a body cream. I got the new Almond Blossom scent and my daughter picked Vannila Spice. Psa, ULTA has Pacifica 30 percent off (at least on line, no affiliation) don’t hate me CM8 ????

It is almondy, but not very strong. It’s a sweet almond. I wore it the other day with Sensual Orchid, and it was a good match with the sweetness.

Wearing The Pour Un Ete, my most-worn this summer and honestly where has it been all my life before that?

Very proud of myself for not clicking on any of the above bargain links, because I am $1 over my August budget. (Yes, already).

Less proud of myself for misjudging the size of a pothole last night, which resulted in a Very Broken (dragging on the ground) undercar pipe thing. Curse you Minneapolis streets! And bless you AAA.

Oh no! I think many Midwest streets in general are full of potholes. Our extreme temps are not good for pavement. We’ve had streets buckle here in the heat.

I have a bunch of Amouage mini bottles at home, but only Honour seems fine for summer use, and it is the one I already emptied.
So, SOTD- Elizabeth Arden Green Tea, which I blind bought yesterday at TJ Max for $10.00, very light and refreshing, YUM!!!!
This summer I realized that I don’t have any summer( read LIGHT) scents in my collection, so hopefully I can remedy this by next spring. On my to buy list: Chanel Crystalle edt, Hermes Eau de Pamplemousee Rose edt and maybe Chanel #5 L’Eau- I love the lemon opening in this one.
Any recs for a feminine cheerful perfume with prominent lemon note? Not too sweet, decent lasting power (4-6 hours). I liked Mary Greenwell Lemon (lemon blossom), but it is d/c and impossible to find, love Chanel Eau de Cologne, but it only lasts on me couple hours…
    Thanks in advance! :)

I find Fresh Brown Sugar to be more lemony than their Lemon Sugar. Both are worth a try next time you are in Sephora. I love Brown Sugar and should probably get another bottle soon! Roca Nuvol Llimona is also quite good, but even more sweet – I believe Luckyscent has it.

Also, no coffee or regular tea (green tea only) and chugging water (which I never do…basically I drink black tea all day which is very bad for dehydration…I know) and loads of Monkeytoes smoothies…Mr. CM8 and I are having one per day and really enjoying them.

Let me tell you it is not easy. I was basically off coffee until my eldest came home and insisted it be in the house. She is working 10 hours a day five days a week with ADHD and autistic fourth graders as a camp counselor and insisted that there be coffee every morning. So it was too much of a temptation. But prior to that I was drinking LOADS of black tea….and there was my caffeine intake. Right now I am allowing myself three cups of green tea for health benefits and a bit of caffeine. I am slugging along-LOL!!!

lillyjo, hope you don’t mind me just putting up an article for you to read-

            https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/top-10-evidence-based-health-benefits-of-green-tea

I think green tea is both energizing with a bit of caffeine and relaxing because of the chemical compounds….

I drink it hot….one of the reasons I drink so much tea to begin with is that I am always cold and I would much rather drink hot drinks than cold ones!

I struggled with it last night. My son got some disappointing news yesterday and called me crying. He’s almost 19 and it’s the first time I’ve heard him actually fully cry in several years. It broke my heart and honestly it was all I could do not to jump on the next plane to Alabama. I cried a lot for him yesterday afternoon and was pretty depressed to be so far away from him last night. I wanted to drown my sadness in wine, but just curled up on the couch and watched trashy reality TV instead.

I’m wearing the only A in my collection . .. Agent Provocateur. A dark, spicy rose.

Handy tip: if you layer Agent Provocateur with Cacharel Noa, you get a poor man’s Coriandre. Well, rather close relation to Coriandre actually. AP is rose-saffron-coriandre-lite oakmoss and Noa is coriandre-fluffy musk-milk. Or something like that.

Anxiously waiting for ‘Y’ now so I can pull out my YSL, Yardleys and Ysatis :D

I did not know that there was coriander in Noa!!! I loved that fragrance and must have drained four bottles in the late 90s into earlish 2000s…I do remember a coffee note listed in Noa but my nose never picked it up….I even had the elusive EDP which came with a screw off cap for decanting….

      • Schneeze says:

There’s definitely coriander in there, albeit fleetingly.

I find combining Noa with AP really amplifies the coriander in both, and the underlying musk plus rose turns the combo into a thick yet light n fluffy coriander-y rosy, soapy blanket with a somewhat mossy undertone.

Calling it Coriandre exactement might be a bit of an overreach but it’s pretty close.

    Nice photo! Super dramatic????????

No SOTD yet, hardly got anything moved in yesterday because I had to run all over town and find a MO. Then, it was so incredibly hot, I went into sloth mode. So, much to do today.

After my shower, I’m going to treat myself to PHI. Haven’t worn it in a while, but I’ve set my AC to arctic blast and will not leave my apartment until tomorrow morning. I think this Ian excellent plan!

Also: what is an easily accessible room deodorant spray or candle that really works? This apartment smells like cats, and when I said something about he odor, she had the audacity to tell me it’s their carpet shampoo! I need a fix, quick????

Does it smell like cat pee? It’s hard to get that out, especially in carpet. My cat has peed in my laundry bag before and some of the stuff still smelled after a regular wash. There are enzymatic sprays that break down the odor (Nature’s Miracle is one or Bac Out which is at some supermarkets). Also, maybe dousing the place with unscented Fabreeze might help?

Yes, pretty sure it’s the carpet. They did steam clean it, but cat pee is pretty persistent. It’s not overwhelming but noticible. I don’t think I’ll be able to get it out of the carpet. This is an older section in the complex, and they are renovating building by building, just haven’t made it here yet. IMO the whole carpet needs to be taken up and dumped. Not sure what the subfloor is, but I’m sure it’s penetrated. The best I’m going to be able do is cover the odor with something else, I think. Ugh!

Ugh is right! My current ambient room fragrance obsession is Blackbird incense which is getting all my perfume money and it’s made me go off my usual candles. A bit on the pricey side, but I’m so in love with a couple of them that I can’t help myself. They’re also available on Amazon.

Second Bac Out by Biokleen, I don’t have cats, but use it on the stains my toddler occasionally leaves on carpet. Pet owners seem to be happy about this product as well. I normally buy it from my local supermarket, but you can get it a little cheaper online
        https://www.vitacost.com/biokleen-bac-out-stain-and-odor-eliminator-with-foaming-sprayer-32-fl-oz
I have a bunch of kids in the house and tried many stain removers over the years- nothing comes close.
Very sorry about your carpet situation, it literally sucks! Maybe try to write a complaint to the main leasing office, explain the situation and if you can, get a letter from the doctor stating that you have breathing problems/allergic reactions/depression, etc. because of the cat pee stink. In some cases they should not only change the carpet, but also partially change the drywalls. Best of luck to you and hope your situation gets resolved soon!!!

If it’s a cat pee, I am with Elisa P on enzymatic sprays, since covering this smell is going to be difficult.

Nature’s Miracle Stain & Odor Remover worked for me on the blanket and sofa (but it was a one-time ‘accident’ and the stain was fresh).
CleanAir claim their products work well (and some reviews support it), but I have not tried them.
No idea how accessible this stuff is for you, but I bought Nature’s Miracle in a pet shop.

Sorry you have to put up with it. Horrible!

I’ve used Nature’s Miracle shampoo when steam cleaning my carpet at home, but the they were in good condition to start with. I’ll check and see if they have some type of deodorizer spray I can spritz directly on the carpet.

Santal Carmin is one of the few Atelier I’d want, thinking about the soap or body wash…
CdG Lily for another hot day and I put a spritz of Molinard Muguet from a neglected decant on my hand for comparison. The CdG is crisp and sharp/tart and stays that way. The Molinard is sweeter, and more perfume-y with a slightly powdery drydown. Smells more retro. It’s nice! Maybe a better Fall LOTV.

I got a thoughtful surprise package from my brother yesterday who just came back from Italy. He sent me some of those wax/hanging potpourri things from SMN. Very clove and eucalyptus heavy, and potent! But pretty. My cats were repelled, lol. I think I may have to relegate them to a closet.
Love to all the felines out there ????????????????

Today’s SOTD is L’ Artisan’s Mure et Musc mixed with vintage LA’s Vanille. For extra oomph, I layered it over the MeM body oil. :)

Today’s shake is kale, kefir, bananas, PB, cocoa, avocado and flax seeds. You can call me ‘zippy’ today.

    Amouage sunshine woman

I didn’t look up the notes, and all I smelled was the almond and vanilla… Then I looked at the notes and it supposed to smell a lot like osmanthus – I think I can smell it now but perhaps is the power of suggestion – it’s OK . I used up half of a 1 mL sample by applying liberally – first i dabbed – then I poured a bit in my hands and slapped it about like cologne

No credit today. Spritz of Prada Oeillet scent and then No 19 Poudre at Duty Free. Trying to retain my happiness despite 3 hour flight delay…notified after I got on train to airport.

ZGO is a lovely store, especially for candle lovers. They have quite a range. I bought a small Diptyque Baies for my friend, a set of Esteban Neroli incense sticks for me and Mariage Freres Paris Breakfast tea for my husband.

Came away with a sample of OJ Champaca, PdN Fig-Tea and a Dusita La Fleur de Siam. Very nice SA. Worth the visit.

SOTD + Atelier Cologne Blanche Immortelle

Inspired by LizzieB’s comment that she loves this in the heat. She is SPOT ON. I did not want to gas myself so only wore 5 sprays. I can still smell it over 10 hours later. .

In other news, I got yelled at by a Starbucks cashier for picking up my own mobile order. The particular store I frequent near work keeps completed orders at 2 different places. Since there was no one near the pick up section, I decided to get in myself. The cashier, who had a long line, saw me and yelled don’t do it because employees use the door right next to the counter. I got his name and will submit a complaint AND will cite disorganization and potential workplace safety violations.

I was not going to include a Commuting Woe but now I will:

      No. 444 and 445:
      – someone near me kept passing gas. I deliberately moved to another train car so I’m not in the one with the restroom but boo hiss, it sure smells like someone did No. 2
      – the woman sitting across the aisle from me kept dangling her legs back and forth and unfortunately, every time she does that, she stirs up the stench, making me suspect that she is the source of the god-awful smell!

Oh no! That’s truly awful. Poo smells in tight spaces are the worst. Funny story: back in the 80s my mom was seated next to a man with severe BO on a long international flight. She calmly took out her perfume bottle (never asked her which one) and spritzed him while he was sleeping!

Egads on the BO! And LOL on spraying the offender although I probably would not chance it these days given how litigious society is.

I really don’t understand how anyone could do that in a train car full of people? It is absolutely crass behavior. Maybe you need to carry a scented hanky for emergency situations?

I need to keep a dropper bottle of some essential oil inside my purse.

If you have total control over when and where you pass gas, you are luckier than many of us.

Oh gross! I’m often subjected to many unpleasant smells at work (GI bleed, pelvic exams, homeless, drinkers, ad nauseum!). I keep a small jar of Vick’s in my work bag and rub a bot in a disposable mask for just those situations! Pretty sure you could get away with in on the train, plus you’ll avoid inhaling airborne virus/bacteria during flu and cold seasons. I’ve been known to wear one on a plane, too…????

I just picked up a bottle of aedes de venustas by l’artisan in the aedes store in NYC yesterday so I’m in that today although it’s waaaaaay too hot and humid to wear right now. Trudged around Manhattan yesterday in 90 degree heat and high humidity to go perfume shopping, it was pretty miserable but I picked up the aedes and a bottle of nanban by arquiste, both of which will be perfect for a Jackson hole autumn!

Wearing a bit of Chanel No 5 tonight. I finally caught up on some sleep after the fun family wedding festivities this past weekend.

It was one of the best weddings we ever attended. I was very casual but elegant. And FUN! No one left early and it was a great mix of people.

Thanks to Jalapeno for suggesting Bronze Goddess and Terracotta. I actually wore both mixed them and it was fabulous! BG all over me and Terracotta sprayed on the inside of my dress.

On theme with Acqua di Parma´s Iris Nobile (EDP). It’s gorgeous, would have loved to have tried the Eau de Toilette at some point, but then again I’m plenty happy with my EDP.

Had an “amusing” incident with my washing machine this morning. I tend to be a bit generous with the washing powder, and this time the machine took its revenge and ejected all the far too soapy water. So I had a lake where no lake was supposed to be, it took some effort to get all the soapy water out, but I managed in the end; more is more is not always a good idea!
