Tuesday scent of the day 8/7

Posted by Robin on 7 August 2018 242 Comments

Happy National Lighthouse Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I looked all over for my Astier Villatte samples this morning, but no dice, and so no points for me today. I'm in Diptyque Kimonanthe.

Reminder: on 8/10, wear a fragrance by Atelier Cologne, Acqua di Parma or Amouage, if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter A.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Sofia Teapot by Astier De Villatte ("A quirky take on a traditional 18th Century design, this tea pot will make a feature of any tea time. With its elegant spout, and decadent handle, Sofia will turn pouring a cup of tea into a true art form.") is £325 at Summerill & Bishop.

Continuing with Acqua di Parma scents.
SOTD is Blu Mediterraneo – Cipresso di Toscana. Sadly discontinued. While it smells quite masculine, I enjoy all these fresh woody and herbal notes.

I am in Annick Goutal Songes, so I am on the A theme.
I am lemming the body oil in the new style packaging. Anyone try them yet?

Tea is french press coffee and I made some steamed soy milk for my own homemade cafe au lait. Steel cut oats this morning and I put some dried sour cherries and the kids loved it. Heat advisory today in the city, stay cool everyone!

I’ve tried the new body oil for Eau d’Hadrien and it’s lovely stuff. I can even go without the scent when I use this after the shower. I have one bottle of the original Hadrien bath oil (maybe 20+ years old, in perfect shape) that I was scared to use up because I thought they’d never make something like it again. It took them a while but…. :)

      You schmell wonderful.

Since I wear Songes a lot in the summer I thought it would be nice to pair it with the oil.
Does Donatella count body oils as purchases?

Yes, to the new bath and body oil for Hadrien. At approx $70 (for 6.7 ounces), it’s pricey but you only need a little!

I think the EDT is lighter and the EDP is more powerful and lasts longer but they definitely smell like the same fragrance with minor differences to my nose. I purchased both bottles from an online discounter when the packaging and bottles were changing. I got them both, well, for a song.

Busting out the vintage Diors this week as I wait for my long-lemmed-but-only-now-seen-at-a-reasonable-price ounce of Diorling to arrive. I could not be more wildly excited; vintage leathers are My Thing and I’ve heard this is the grande dame thereof.

Today I’m wearing Diorama. Either this is a particularly mushroomy patchouli or my bottle has gone off – anyone familiar with Diorama and can tell me?

Sounds like it’s gone off. I enjoy vintage Diorama, and I’m pretty patch-phobic. Mostly get orange blossom, general “white flowers”, and a hefty dose of oakmoss.

I’m wearing Luctor et Emergo by POTL today. I requested a sample on a whim with my latest Beautyhabit order, because I remembered enjoying it when I sampled it back in 2005ish. It’s very cherry on me. Very cherry. But nice.

Have a great day – stay cool, hydrated and safe!

Interesting on the POTL. Back when I was looking for a fragrance that emulated the scent of Jergens Skin Lotion that one was recommended. Was looking for a bitter almond scent. Sounds like POTL is more about the cherry.

Iris Nobile edt, a great summer scent with more oomph than a cologne, but nothing to cloy or annoy either. Speaking of AdP, was browsing new beauty arrivals at Nordstrom, and saw they came out with squeeze-tube lip balms to match some of the Medditerraneo scents. I’m drawn to the attractive blue & white packaging, but doubt I “need” another balm.

Vitacost is having a 12 percent off sale sitewide with a code that shows up when you enter the site (I will go back and look cause I already forgot it…yikes!)….

I have been craving frankincense and wore the Vitacost 100 % Pure frankincense oil to bed last night…I swear it smells like Heeley Cardinal to me…Mr. CM8 asked, “why does it smell like cut wood here?”

I think so because I have a large decant from a lovely NSTer and it is working well in this horrible heat…it is sweet and fruity on my skin and I spray it lavishly to cool me off….my guess is if I continue it might be a thunk by the end of the week.

    Good morning Y’all…..

Projecting just a wee bit loud in Gucci Bloom. Hoping it settles down soon, because I really like it when it’s soft.

In somewhat related fragrance news, my poor kitty cat has bronchitis/asthma (going back to vet tomorrow for treatment), and the vet has told me no candles, aerosol cleaners, diffused essential oils, and PERFUME around him! King Gandalf is totally worth any sacrifice, but he’s messing with my good smelling stuff at home…. :)
Here he is (a few years back), sitting in his favorite throne….

      What a beautiful kitty!

One thing I do to avoid contaminating my apartment with perfume (which would make it hard for me to clearly smell whatever I’m testing) is to only ever spray perfume onto my skin in one location. In my case, this is a bathroom that is basically the last stop for air circulating through the apartment and out through bathroom vents.

If there is someplace similar in your house where your beautiful kitty does not go and where air does not spread to the rest of the house, that might help.

Second, I notice fragrance transfers from skin, even after it has dried, to clothing. Others here have mentioned pets’ fur smelling like their perfume. You might need to avoid perfume on wrists or hands, or maybe wear it under clothing (e.g., chest).

      Good luck, Jada!

I had a dog with respiratory issues and also could not use any ambient scenting products, but continued wearing perfume. I store my perfumes in the closet and just stand in there to spray.

Jada, my Otto had asthma (as did his sibling, Zoink), and it helped immensely when I switched their litter from regular clay-based clumping to a low-dust litter (the one we now use is made from corn cobs).

Also chiming in as the human caretaker of an asthmatic cat. Teflon has been using inhalers to manage her symptoms. Or rather, I administer it, and she has learned to tolerate the procedure. The device I use is called an “Aerocat”. It’s an adapter for human inhalers.

I am able to wear perfume around her, and it doesn’t cause any problems. I do apply perfume inside my closet, and nowhere else in the house.

Word to the wise: if you spray on Lubin Akkad, be careful of clothing — unless you really want your pajamas to smell like Akkad all week. Fortunately, it does smell very good.

I saw this fascinating Twitter thread that begins:

“Just realized that since we read serial nineteenth-century novels only as whole books, we are basically binge-watching the nineteenth century.”

    https://twitter.com/KHandozo/status/1026178793478615040

One of the comments links to a website where you can read some of these originally serialized books in serial installments.

I am a tuberose/jasmine walking bomb in Child perfume oil. I dabbed it a couple of weeks ago and I could barely smell it. This morning, I applied the almost full sample on my arms and chest and it was very, very quiet, until I hit the scorching heat outside and Child started growing like a monster. Even though I am at work now, freezing to death, this perfume is refusing to quiet down. No complaints here so far, perhaps, because one of my coworkers is walking around in a huge cloud of Givenchy Amarige and is killing my Child. I really hate to make my perfume so noticeable, but Child will not disturb anyone, anymore: “THUNK”. I do not want to see it in my life anymore…????

I wish I could have a space heater here, but unfortunately it is strictly prohibited to avoid the risk of fire. It seems like in the past people forgot to turn them off at the end of the day and that caused some issues. I always have a wool sweater or a shawl with me. The AC here is on whole year round, which is not fun at all.

Partial credit for wearing Andy Tauer’s Incense Rosé today? This afternoon I’ll be flying back to CA from my parents’ house near DC. Unfortunately for my fellow travelers, I’ll be doing so with a mild cold :( I expect I caught it on my flight over last Thursday, or maybe from hanging out at a germ-infested airport for eight hours.

Anyway, the cold isn’t too bad (I can still smell!), and hopefully it’ll clear up in the next day or two. Wish me no delays on my flight back!

Red sunrise this morning from the high level smoke. Better than low level, I suppose, we had that for about 2 hours mid-day yesterday.

Remember how yesterday (ah so long ago) I said it was Monday+++? Oh my, how optimistic my younger self was. No, it was Monday++++++++++++. Spent the evening in the ER; Mr Pixel has a broken elbow :( So now we embark on the joys of surgery, PT, etc. Well we will at some point, once the referral that was supposed to be sent last night from the hospital actually shows up at the doctor’s. And since he broke it on the job (working on a recalcitrant pump on the fire engine) he has to go thru The Process instead of just using our personal healthcare which is immensely more efficient.

And we’re meant to go on a Big Trip in 5 weeks, so I have to call the tour company and throw myself on their mercy to see if we could possibly postpone. Officially we are of course 6 days past the latest cancel date so… should be a fun chat.

Tuesday is certainly Monday’s ugly sister in this house, this week.

SOTD is Atelier California Clementine. Need a little cheerfulness here.

SOTD = Seville a la Aube – there is an “A” in there – does that count? :-) My bottle of this is getting down there – may be 15% left. I love it but could use a change – what orange blossom perfume is even better than this one? I’ll do a little sample testing while I have some left for comparisons….

Not participating today. Am in No. 19 because it’s that kind of day.

My co-workers are happy with me at least, though. We have a nectarine tree in our yard and I picked 6 bags of nectarines off of it this weekend. I made a huge cobbler with some of them and brought it in with some vanilla ice cream. A nice treat to help us all through Tuesday.

SotAM = La Chasse aux Papillons
    SotPM = Assam of India

Pulled weeds and trimmed plants in the garden this morning. It was already warm at 8 am. Phew! Looking forward to an “A” for Assam later today.

An odd thing: I’ve not worn La Chasse in some time. A tiny exploratory spritz smelled very stale. I took the bottle outside and sprayed four times into the air. Then I sprayed my arm, and it smelled right again.

Zero points in Tuscany per Donna. One of those scents I like enough to never feel like swapping away completely or otherwise losing but I only wear it a couple of times per year and have much more than I need.

Still no word on when my parents are getting out of the hospital. The tentative date for my dad is tomorrow. I’m still hoping that I can hitch a ride with a friend so I can go grocery shopping or at least finish it. It’s just a whole lot more drama and had to take another week off work due to all of it. Right now, I am stinking up the house with Mitsouko.

It’s “A” for Aedes de Venustas original today. Tart rhubarb for a day in the mid-nineties sounded good. Had a dr appt this morning and I’m having an endoscopy on Friday. I hope they knock me out good.

I’ve been getting the most overwhelming craving for rhubarb crumble lately–very tart, no added sugar, possibly a smidgen of ginger. But, of course, it’s out of season and I can’t find any rhubarb *anywhere*, damn it!

Good luck with the endoscopy, those things are nasty.

I’m in Fig Tea today, not with the program. Showered in Harry’s fig shower gel and an ancient Laura Mercier fig body scrub, so it seemed like the thing to do.
LT loves Fig Tea, (4stars), but I’m not too impressed. Doesn’t seem to be much to it, but maybe that’s the point.

Jif cinnamon peanut butter and banana slices on toast for lunch. I’m addicted to this peanut butter, and yes, deep inside, I am 12 years old.

I eat banana and peanut or almond butter in a wrap, like this:

        https://www.wegmans.com/products/bakery/pitas-flatbread-wraps/wrap/flatbread-wraps-multi-grain-with-flax.html

I use a Justin’s peanut or almond butter, smearing it diagonally, peel a banana and place it on one end of the flatbread, then roll to close it up.

In Bvlgari Black for men (Or somesuch – it’s not worth remembering the details). Pleasantly tired after swimming. I hope everyone is doing well – I’ve been neglecting NST and shall probably continue to do so until the end of the year. Too much going on and as there’s no money for perfume at the moment I’ve slightly lost interest. Hence using up samples from Bvlgari (who will probably not use the advertising tagline I would give them: “the perfume you can wear when you want something too dull to notice”)

    Commuting Woes No. 443:

So it was not just my imagination that NJ Transit had been randomly cancelling trains. There was a lot of talk of it on the radio last night and this morning and apparently, there’s a shortage of train engineers. We’re basically screwed:

    1) leaving “earlier” (between 4:45 and 5:15) the trains are VERY crowded – we’re talking about being so close that, on the way home today, the hair of the woman standing behind me kept brushing the back of my neck – YUCK!

    2) leaving later (between 5:45 and 6:15), still crowded but not like #1; HOWEVER, the trains around this time are the ones that often get cancelled without much info to passengers as to whether or not the alternate express trains will make additional stops.

So, I will experiment with leaving earlier than earlier and see how I do.

So, by earlier than earlier, does that mean 4:30 in the morning?? The only saving grace would be getting off work at 3ish in the afternoon. Seriously, you have my sympathies.

I should clarify — leave work to go home between 4 and 4:30.PM. I am almost always in by 7AM and barely take a full hour for lunch so I would have put in my 8 hours (excluding lunch). As my boss likes to say, the nature of our role ends up being 24 x 7 no matter where we put in the time (and I keep reminding him sure, except when I’m on vacation).

Yeah, I heard about the NJT engineer shortage last month. Seems that quite a few of them have either reached retirement age, or they are leaving for better paying jobs with other rail lines.

NJT is suspending train service to Atlantic City for 4 months starting September 4 to get trains and personnel to other lines. Also to install PTC on that stretch of rail. What a d@mn mess!

They will be cross honoring passes with buses and PATCO, but I can tell you from personal experience that the bus from AC takes about 2.5 times as long as the train does. I feel so sorry for the people who use the AC line to commute.

Sorry about the commuter woes, gotta feel bad for everyone. Truly awful for train riders, and I imagine train staff are straining to keep things running while maintaining their cool. yikes.

Then wondered if the “new” edt is like the old edt (found my bottle of 14 years old which turned bad but brought back memories ????). Got a sample of the current edt and I really think they smell alike! A bottle is on its way ????
