Monday scent of the day 8/6

Posted by Robin on 6 August 2018 250 Comments

Ready or not, it's Monday again. It's also Root Beer Float Day. Birthdays: Andy Warhol, Lucille Ball, Alfred, Lord Tennyson. What fragrance are you wearing?

Me: partial credit for Friday's project with April Aromatics Jasmina.

Reminder: on 8/10, wear a fragrance by Atelier Cologne, Acqua di Parma or Amouage, if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter A.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Black Perfecto, has anyone smelled the EdT version?

I forgot to ask this on the lazy weekend poll, but I am looking for any suggestions for a nice museum in Toronto. I have a day to myself sans babies and Mr. L. I wanted to have lunch somewhere and get lost in a wonderful museum. Or I can visited a nice shop perfume or otherwise.

I haven’t been there, but friends visited the Bata Shoe Museum this summer and enjoyed it. I got to go to the Hockey Hall of Fame (but compensated with a quick visit to the Guerlain boutique).

Yes, briefly: the top notes seemed a little different–more rose, less cherry in the EDT–but otherwise it really felt the same to me

Art Gallery of Ontario is a major art museum. It’s been years since I went there but it’s very engrossing, as I recall. And it now has a Frank Gehry-designed extension that looks very interesting in photos. See here for more info: http://ago.ca/about/about-the-ago.

I do not have a lot of Amouage fragrances and even fewer Atelier Cologne ones, which means I will mostly wear Acqua di Parma this week.

SOTD is Acqua di Parma Colonia.

I do not own a single full bottle Amouage, but do have some samples floating around if I can find them. I will definitely wear my one full bottle AdP, Iris Nobile.

I have only decants and samples too. I just feel it is too hot for my Amouages. They are so… substantial. Well, I could wear that sample of Sunshine Man, but I am not particularly impressed with it. We shall see.

Well, I didn’t see the project but I’m wearing Eau d’Hadrien – not small but (used to) start with “A”! Thank you to everyone who wished me a happy birthday – we had a great dinner with friends and I chose OJ Frangpiani. Feeling my age today – yesterday was the football kickoff picnic which I helped organize – a lot of work in setup and takedown. Girding myself for the stink of football practice which starts tonight for my 9th grader.

It’s a little too early in the morning for Amouage, so I’m going with Poivre Samarcande, which is more wearable in this pre-coffee stage of the day.

My nephew made the mistake of feeding 2 out of 3 dogs. The 3rd one (my avatar) was elsewhere in the house gallivanting when he smelled the food but by then, there was none left. The sassy dog that he is went up to my nephew’s room and howled and barked for 1/2 hour.

Happy birthday, Lucille Ball, the original producer for Star Trek! (Never mind that she was initially operating under the impression that the show was about stars, aka celebrities! :D)

Too hot for anything but Frederic Malle Eau de Magnolia today. Can anyone share their impressions of Sale Gosse? It hasn’t hit our local Malle counter yet, and I’m so intrigued by the violet bubblegum description.

I decided to do a week of my Atelier Cologne discovery set, which despite being the first discovery set I ever purchased, has languished unused. I went through the whole thing once and then never really used it again. I’m going to choose my favorites from the set to wear this week. First up is Cedrat Enivrant. This one is a love for me, especially in the summer. I will definitely be buying at least a decant of this.

    SOTD: Atelier Cologne Grand Neroli

This is the only perfume I have that fits the CP, so I’m going to pull a CM8 and wear it all week :) My travel-size bottle was one of my first perfume purchases and I’ve got probably ~15ml left. Once this is gone, I’d like to replace with either Hermes Eau de Neroli Dore or Eau d’Orange Verte.

Another all natural scent from Providence Perfume Co – I’m test driving Lemon Liada, the “lemon liar” (no actual lemon in the formula) from a sample I got last week. It’s beautifully done, and I love the verbena note in it, but it’s more about mimosa than any kind of citrus. It’s limited edition; the last LE scent, Tangerine Thyme, was a big hit for me, I got a full bottle and back up bottles of it. This one is interesting but I’m not yet sold on it. For any mimosa fans, it’s definitely a must try.

Darn, I have a travel set of seven AC scents, plus a number of other decants/small bottles, so I’d have easily been able to do a week of AC, but instead I’m at my parents’ house with limited choices. So Penhaligon’s Halfeti it is for me today—a beautiful and sweet, spicy rose—over last night’s l’Arlesienne soap and dry oil.

I sprayed a bit of Madonna Truth or Dare Naked on one hand this morning, then spied my bottle of Jour Gardenia, which I’ve got up and down my arms.

I was rather enjoying the beachy-tropical flower combo but about an hour in, Truth or Dare Naked turned and went all sour and nasty on me.

This happens to me with so many perfumes and it’s so frustrating. I’m convinced it’s my olfactory system and suspect it’s hormonal (maybe?) The odor I get is always the same but it’s not necessarily consistent. For instance, I got some Puredistance Sheiduna in a swap recently and the first time I tried it (or maybe I just smelled the vial) it was pure acrid and sour. I sniffed it about a week ago and it was lovely – gauzy sweet desert dunes and dates – so I figured it was safe to wear it. Over the course of the day it went back and forth between the way it’s (obviously) supposed to smell, and acrid and sour.

    What gives?!?

Amouage Reflection Woman….and I didn’t even know about the CP when I put it on, this makes me so happy :)

I like it. It’s a musky watermelon to me.

I am continuing on the “use it up” project, and will continue to do so. I have been tracking my perfume expenses since falling down the rabbit hole, but I really looked at the spreadsheet recently and am somewhat horrified. And, I don’t have as much GREAT perfume as I would like for the expense – there are a lot of $30/$70 “why not?” purchases. The one perfume I really love cost around $300 – I wish I had more of those. I think this is the same analysis everyone goes through with clothes, electronics, or anything else – it pays to buy quality for many reasons, not least of which is psychologically you just appreciate it more. But, I just wanted to get my hands on stuff to smell, so in that sense, mission accomplished, and now I can continue my journey more discerningly.

Carnal Flower…when I began I placed a $100+ order of 1ml samples from STC, this was the only one that knocked my socks off :)

Funny, mine is Le Parfum de Therese. 80+ bottles in my collection but I haven’t worn anything else since Mr. Lucy bought me a big bottle for my birthday last year. Those “why not” purchases add up but don’t satisfy. Luckily, Carnal Flower is available in many sizes and forms. The 10ml travel spray is $78 – only $8 more than your acceptable range. Just sayin’. :)

I actually did purchase it! but I don’t regret it :) and, I split some of it away, so that deferred some of the cost.

That is an impressive story (80 bottles, but using 1). LPDT is such a great story and scent, and it’s nice that it was a milestone gift from someone you love, which makes it even more special :)

Those “why not?” purchases really add up, don’t they? It has helped me to have a strict monthly budget – it’s easier to skip something I just Really Like if I know I’m saving for a Love later on. Not that the occasional “why not” doesn’t sneak in there, of course!

I totally relate – I have too many bottles that I bought because the price was good and I liked them overall but I wish I had saved my pennies to buy something more expensive but that I love not just like. My most expensive bottle is Lune Feline by Atelier des Ors – I love it even though it only got a measly two stars in the Guide. It needed another star at least!

SOTD is Box of Eels. I may be living in Sketch City, but I smell super classy????????

Seriously, when did the Golden Arches start hiring security? Are quarter pounders with cheese a highly sought after commodity? And why would security chase a 95 year old man out the door? Because he took the sports section of the local paper, and the security guard accused him of “stealing.” ????

Life. Sometimes, it’s just too crazy.

Reno (aka The City of the Super Sketchiest People Ever) and I got off to a rough start, but things are looking up. (Although, I’m looking up through a lot of smoke.) Found housing for 3 months (at a RIDICULOUS price), but excited by the fact that mid-September my professional van build will be starting, God willing and crick don’t rise.

Also, got on a real mountain bike for the first time in 5 years! Felt it out yesterday along the Truckee River trail to see how rusty I was. Pretty rusty, but one can only improve, right? I am now the proud owner of a neon orange Specialized Pitch. Hopefully, I will avoid serious bodily injury.

Pretty sure this smoke is shrinking my olfactory bulb, so I’m going extra extra heavy duty with perfumes from now on in the hopes I can save it from total desiccation…! Spray extra and waft it my way, would you? ????????

I read Fast Food Nation many many years ago but a point he makes repeatedly is how dangerous working in fast food restaurants is. I want to say that statistically it was up there with being a cop, as far as death and injury rates. Not sure if that’s still the case.

Congrats on your new bike! And yes, don’t hurt yourself.

And was surprised about the security so did a google search on McDonald’s + security guards. And it’s not just in the US! Can’t recommend it, that’s more information than I wanted today. Here’s a fun headline for you though:

It was time to get back on a “real” bike! And I will admit to watching a ton of mountain biking videos recently to get my courage up, and ran across a very inspiring rider who really is shredding trails after coming back from a significant injury. Sure, I’m 30 years older than him, but I can get back in the saddle too! ????????‍♂️

Well, DC says it all. But one of the things I like about traveling is not only all the great people I meet and beautiful places I see, but also the flipside of that coin. I really appreaciate so many everyday things things that I rarely even thought about before embarking on this little journey. I’m very grateful to be upright, walking, talking, and mostly sane. ????

I was all ready to fully participate I the CP all week long but then I decided to wear my white button up shirt with little pineapples all over it which then led me to wear my recently unearthed decant of Ananas Fizz. So I think I get partial credit for the “A” perfume name. However, I’m not really feeling the perfume after not wearing it for at least a few years. It’s coming across more woody men’s mainstream perfume than I remember. I think my little decant will go up for swap. Feel free to email me at my user name at gmail if anyone wants to get a head start on swapping.

Also a PSA after the shower gel weekend poll: Yves Rocher will give you two Maracuja shower gels for free with $25 purchase with code MARACUJA2018. It ends tomorrow night. Maracuja was featured as a daily lemming last month and is described as passionfruit and ginger. This morning I placed an order for:
    Lagoon Hair & Body Wash
    Cotton Flower Mimosa Shower Gel
Quelques Notes d’Amour EDP travel size
Moment de Bonheur EDP travel size
    Coconut EDT travel size
FREE gift Lavandin Blackberry Relaxing Shower Oil

    SOTD: nothing yet. Maybe Philosykos

What I’ve been thinking about lately: location, climate and perfume. I’m near Chicago, my son is in SF, and my daughter is currently in New Hampshire. We’ve visited both of them lately, and a couple fragrances I took with me behaved unexpectedly. E.g.: Ineke Idyllwild. I’ve worn this a few times around home, and something doesn’t quite work for me here. I’m not a big fan of citrus + fir here at home – slightly muddy, I think. But in San Francisco (where it was developed), it’s a different story. Something about the air clarity, perhaps? At any rate, if I lived there, I might well purchase it.

And then, New Hampshire weekend before last. Again, I took a couple of things, but one interesting angle was that my daughter’s place has no air conditioning, and it was hot with nearly daily rain. My husband compared it to being at summer camp. It was wonderful to listen to rain on tree leaves in the evening. At any rate, I only took a couple options, and they were nearly smothering in the humidity. I gave up . We were hiking, etc., so I didn’t really miss perfumes, anyway. When I got home, Eau des Merveilles came to mind…I can imagine that one working very well in those conditions.

So that’s how perfume is occupying my life lately: I’m pondering the geographic implications.

I will enjoy revisiting the Atelier Cologne sample set this week. I’ve had these samples for ages and they still smell great.

I almost bought a tiny bottle a few weeks ago at Sephora, but they did not have the one I wanted. Now I can’t remember which, Bergamote Soleil or Clementine California? As much as I love colognes I still have not purchased a bottle from this line. Oh well. ;)

Sampling Byredo Oud Immortel today. I like it a lot but I think I’d rather smell it on my fiance than myself, so I’ll pass it along to him to finish off!

Good morning! I put on some Pacifica Tunisian Jasmine Lime before checking in here, so not on theme today. I might have an Atelier sample kicking around somewhere for the rest of the week – we’ll see.

Speaking of Pacifica, since there was talk in the last couple weeks lamenting their discontinuing solids and many of the scents, I went looking around online to see if there was any Mexican Cocoa left anywhere. I found an Etsy seller (also on Amazon with same pricing) named Violet Twig Aromatics with something called Mexican Cocoa and a couple other that sound Pacifica-ish (Lilac Blossom). Anyone tried this seller?

yes it’s gone from everywhere…website, stores, etc. Must have not sold well or folks were confusing it with the d/c Tunisian Jasmine which smelled completely different of almond and jasmine…that one was SOOOOO good.

I had a terrible night’s sleep and am still struggling. I spent an hour reading the weekend posts on scented gels and soaps, drooling over all of them,…but I can’t manage to drag myself into the shower and use one. :) Therefore, no SOTD yet. I’m pretty useless today. Happy Monday???

SOTD = Atelier Cologne Silver Iris

Candied violets Iris. I’m still working on my 30mL bottle and have a 100 mL back-up. Methinks I won’t run out.

Spotted at Wegmans – Halloween candies! It feels wrong, but then again, if Back-to-School started in July …

    Commuting Woes No. 442:

Why would anyone hold on to the pole where he had to outstretch his arm (he had the whole pole at his disposal), stand on one leg (he has two, with no obvious injury) and then when the train lurched slightly, caught himself and stomped his foot on top of mine? Why? To top it all off, I obviously looked like I was getting off at the next stop and he was in my way but did not budge so I had no choice but to shove past him. Next time won’t be so pleasant for him!

The heat is on…yucky — welcome back to summer in NJ ????

People are strange. It really shows up in commuting….agree, a book is in order. Or a weekly column.

I was in Pier One last week, and they had tons of Halloween stuff for sale and all sorts of pumpkin/fall themed stuff. I usually hate that jumpstart on seasonal things, but I swear it cooled me down from the heat here….

      Violet and iris….yum.

Halloween these days are not like the ones from 29 years ago where costumes kept the kids warm. These past few years, skimpier costumes do better for fear of overheating inside one’s costume!

Ow! Your unbalanced traveller sounds annoying. Today on the train home there was an enthusiastic singalong by four sloshed ladies of a certain age of Tom Jones’s greatest hits. And I’d left my earphones on my desk. 17 more commuting days to go.

Well, my SOTD is in line with this week’s CP since I applied some of my Aqua di Parma Profumo body cream. It’s ancient, like the Mitsouko body cream I used last week–and also separated. I blush to admit I went through a body cream phase. When I searched in my upstairs closet, I found a shoebox (or two) with no fewer than ten (10!) giant tubs of body creams–some mostly used, one (of Chanel Coco) mostly full. These are all ancient, at least 10 years old and possibly more like 15. I’m not sure why I went off them. The Profumo one, although it looks rather yucky, still smells grand, and in fact seems to give a slight golden cast to my skin as it goes on (or is that my imagination?). Profumo is one of the great, great chypres, to my mind, but I’ve never bought a FB, only samples. Perhaps I ought to invest in one. Also, it seems somehow light and fresh enough to be OK to wear in hot weather.

It’s not, trust me. Extreme heat in humid environments (my personal nemesis) are hellish, but this dry heat is just as bad in a different way. Scorched. My throat, my sinuses, my skin- everything feels dried, dehydrated, blistered. The simple routine of inspiration/expiration makes you feel like a dried, shriveled corn husk! Ugh!

Started the day in Diptyque Olene, but it faded, so to participate in the “A” day and the use it up them, I shook the final drops of my Aftelier Honey Blossom decant onto my arms this afternoon.
Thunk – well twink, since it was a very small decant. Sweet and pretty, and now that it is gone I already miss it. Probably need to get some more, to keep my “Honey” category filled. I currently have a list of scent categories, with at least one example in each category, but this has been my only honey…My goal is to have one dense cold weather scent and one lighter warm weather scent in each category that I really love…:-)

That faded within a couple of hours so now I am in No 5 Eau Premiere. I have really noticed the vanilla the last couple of times I’ve worn this and I think I prefer it to L’eau after all.

Keeping a wary eye to the sky this afternoon. I’ve heard a couple rumbles of thunder so far, and pop-up showers are a possibility.

I missed the shower gel poll this weekend, but I keep a minimalist shower… one shower gel, which currently is Korres Fig; my summer shampoo, Bumble & Bumble Surf Wash, the matching conditioner for dry ends, and my face wash from boscia. I can’t really use soap… very hard water where I live, and I would be scrubbing soap scum all the time. No thanks!

SOTD = Alien Aqua Chic EdT Legere, from the sample stash. Mugler isn’t kidding about this being light! It became a skin scent on me after about 4 hours. Usually, anything from TM lasts about 24 hours on me. However, with hot and muggy weather in full force, I am appreciating something light and refreshing right now.

I like shampoos with matching conditioner; however, I find myself using a lot less conditioner than I do shampoo so I end up with leftover conditioner. Does this happen to you?

If the shampoo and conditioner bottles are the same size, yes. I also use a lot less conditioner than shampoo. My work around with the Bumble & Bumble stuff is that I get a regular sized shampoo, and the travel size of the conditioner.
