Wednesday scent of the day 8/1

Posted by Robin on 1 August 2018 289 Comments

Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit! Welcome to August. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Parfums de Nicolaï Eau Exotique (mango), which I pulled out while looking for my Parfums de Nicolaï L’Eau à la Folie (peach). I could have sworn I had a decant, but maybe I used it up, or maybe I never did, who knows. I am very sure that somewhere I have a sample.

Reminder: on 8/3, we'll celebrate Peach Month! You know what to do.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Peachy Peach Bunny Large 18" by Douglas is $22 at Amazon.

I came across a sample of Mitsouko this morning and thought – “Hey, it’s peach week!” – but I couldn’t bring myself to spray it. Mitsouko and I do not get along.

Fragrance-free after 4 days of Privet Bloom, which elicited compliments from the friends I stayed with in rural Hampshire at the weekend! Funny you should be wearing PdN, Robin, based on our last discussion – made a point of going to the Seymour Street location when I was in London earlier in the week to find it’s no longer there! Website is still showing it as one of two London stand-alone locations, so I have contacted them asking why this is, when it closed & also suggested I may not be the only potential customer rocking up to find it gone – moreover, their Fulham Road location is not remotely in the same area as Seymour Street, so it’s not just a case of “popping round the corner”, especially if you’re pushed for time. I await their response with interest…& will of course let you know what they say.

I had quite forgotten which of the Nicolaï eaux had peach, I plan to wear a collection of them tomorrow. Anyway, mango is nearly peach and Exotique is lovely.

I’m wearing La promesse de l’aube from MDCI, which according to The Guide is a peach rose. I don’t think I really get either, but it’s stunningly beautiful anyway.

    Tea is Lune Rouge

You might like this one actually, although I think you did try it near when it first came out. In your review of Un coeur en mai you mention that it was the first MDCI that you fell in love with and that you had dutifully tried the first 5 or so. And these days the MDCI’s are not as outrageously expensive as they once seemed. The rest has caught up.

HA…so there you are, thank you for the reminder.

You’re right that they’re less outrageous now in comparison, but they never did come out with small sizes so they’re out of my league anyway.

      Smelling good CM8!

You always wear so different perfumes with so much enjoyment. Do you have any favorite note? or a favorite perfume that you will keep in your collection forever?
I will survive only with iris perfumes and Chanel 28 La Pausa EdT as my favorite ever.

You already know that I am a wash , rinse, repeat kinda gal so I have no problem sticking with just one fragrance for a while. I think my tastes are fairly eclectic and I pretty much enjoy all different categories…chypres, greens, florals, woods, gourmands, freshies, etc, etc….over four decades of perfume wearing I have worn and enjoyed them all. There are two fragrance bottles that I will probably keep in my collection forever. A mini of vintage Nocturnes de Caron ( a staple in my wardrobe from age 18 to 30) and a half used travel spray of Heaven by Gap (the scent I associate with Mr. CM8). Keeping them for reference and memories. Otherwise, everything else can pretty much be a “THUNK” eventually :)

Iris is a gorgeous note…I find it to be incredibly soothing.

I’m really curious about when it became possible to buy perfume samples in the US. You wore so many perfumes back in the 70s and I keep wondering if you had to buy all of them in full bottles, or if you were given over the counter samples ( manufacturers samples) or was there another way to get samples pre-internet? I wore several Lancomes Climat, Magie Noire, Tresor and Poeme

Samples were handed out freely…mostly manufactured samples. I don’t know of any other way to get samples pre internet or before decant sites came into existence.

I love the idea that everything should be a “THUNK”. Try the most you can, use it, enjoy it and go to the next without a second thought. I need to reach that point very soon!

    Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit!

Early in the morning I sprayed a whole sample that was labeled Bamboo H. THUNK!
I remember getting it from a NSTer. I tried to check for it online, but could not find it. It was a pleasant green scent, very soft and fleeting. It did not last more than an hour.
After I sprayed on some Pacifica Mediterranean Fig which will be present for many hours. I always enjoy it!

I love Med Fig too and cannot understand why it was d/c. There is a solid of it floating around our house somewhere.

      and YES to another THUNK!

Do you prefer the solid or spray Pacifica’s? I’m finding myself being drawn to more “natural” fragrances lately….Phlur and St.Clair are definitely on my try list, but I can find Pacifica right at WF or Ulta.

I like both but some folks say that the longevity is poor on the solids. Also, the solids are d/c now but they do show up from time to time at brick and mortar stores. Pacifica has massively revamped their fragrances and discontinued so many of the older ones to make way for a new line that they are promoting (something having to do with crystal power). I am wondering if this has affected distribution at Whole Foods and Ulta? I am a fan of Phlur (although many folks don’t like the ad speak but I will say I enjoy the juice) and a HUGE fan of St. Clair Scents as they remind me so very very much of Sonoma Scent Studio and Diane St. Clair is a lovely person (like Laurie Erickson) and a one woman show (like Laurie Erickson was) so I like to see support going her way.

ULTA has a whole new revamped section for Pacifica now. Are there any St. Clair perfumes that are on the deep spicier side?

          • chocolatemarzipan8 says:

There are only three scents in the line up right now. There are reviews on Cafleurebon and Serenity Now and Jessica also reviewed them here on NST. None of the three are spicy.

If you have a Riley Rose store near you, they seem to have all the liquid perfumes. I have no idea why, especially since the one close to me opened 3 weeks ago. (It’s the cosmetics store of Forever 21.)

Yes! It is By Killian Bamboo Harmony. Thank you!. I just checked the notes and they match. I got neroli and bergamot in the opening and then fig leaves and some oakmoss. Not much white tea. Nice scent. Unfortunately, it does not last.

Rats – once again I have forgotten to rabbit, rabbit, rabbit. And I could have used a lucky month.

Wearing my sample of the new Boyfriend and enjoying it. Funny story: I ordered it on the Boyfriend website but via our Amazon prime. My husband gets those confirmation emails and texted me: Did you order a boyfriend from Amazon?? They have everything!

Yesterday’s mention of Ruth Reichl reminded me of one of my favorite books of hers: Garlic and Sapphires: The Secret Life of a Critic in Disguise. She went to restaurants in disguise so that she would get the same treatment as everyone else. And sometimes those disguises were not attractive. The results were very interesting. Highly recommended.

Speaking of online shopping, I was delighted yesterday by getting groceries delivered straight to my door within 2 hours by Instacart, after selecting them online from the HEB store near me. It was my first time trying it and quite easy to do, and I felt overjoyed to have some fresh veggies, strawberries, salmon, etc. People have of course offered to shop for me and bring things, and some have done it, but I hate to be so dependent. The selections made were very nice also. (No affiliation, I promise.)

Yes, my son (who works for Amazon and works on Prime Now operations, BTW) does this a lot. We’re in Seattle, so it’s not HEB obviously, but he’s not afraid to use any online delivery service (not just Amazon) to save himself time and has been mostly pleased. Which is good because he seems to work 24/7 at his job…

I started collecting samples for that theme, and amassed: Oliver Peoples, Mulholland, California Reverie, California Snow, Limette 37, Musc 25, Paris*LA, Mojave Ghost, Clementine California, Yesterday Haze and Violet Disguise. There are so many more to try, but I have loved all of the ones mentioned above. I have full bottles of California Reverie, Oliver Peoples and Musc 25.

Chant d’Aromes EdT, a modern formulation. Somewhat girly peach, though this style is so out of date, it’s not too girly. I prefer the reissued L’Interdit in the same style, but I’m glad to have both.

Speaking of rabbits, we have a baby bunny living in some bushes in the backyard. I’m assuming the mother is near but stays hidden, but we see baby quite frequently. Yesterday my husband was able to get a live photo of him nibbling on some clover. So cute. My youngest usually ends up naming these yard bunnies.
Meeting a friend later for an outdoor lunch so decided to go with the refreshing Assam of India.

Our bunnies do not bother to hide, so I guess there are not enough predators around here. You could catch one if you wanted to, they don’t stop munching even when you walk towards them.

Granted, I haven’t gone exploring because if you’re out in the air, you can’t breath without supportive respiratory equipment. The hospital is in a “bad” area, but I think that describes the entire town. The WORST locale I have traveled to so far????

I hit Comment too soon! How long do you expect to be there? I’m sorry you have to endure the awful conditions.

I was on a business trip once and the hotel put me in a room right next to the pool (as in I can open the sliding doors and be in the pool area). The stench of chlorine was so bad my eyes watered as soon as I opened the door. They refused to put me into a another room so I left and rebooked at another hotel – much nicer / well appointed rooms and closer to the office!

I’m here for 13 weeks (only 12 more to go!). I’m sure it’s not quite as bad as I’m making it out to be, but I’m really disgruntled about not living in the van and not being able to live “on the cheap.” I’ll get over it!

Trying out Eau de Givenchy today. I’m digging it! It’s exactly the kind of thing I was looking for back in May when I wanted to smell like everything that was blooming.

The unboxed mini I ordered was described as “vintage,” but there are no markings on the bottle to indicate just how vintage (or not) it might be. I’m definitely getting a retro, musky-floral vibe from it. The drydown is slightly animalic, in a way that reminds me of honey or beeswax.

Started out in Fragonard Verveine on one arm and Rose de Mai on the other. I broke down and bought the cute little pouch with four 15ml bottles from Beautyhabit during the sale last week. Sooo, I’ve been participating in my own Buy It Up project as well as the Use It Up project.
On the other hand, I drained 2 7ml dabbers, 7 small decants and 11 samples during July. I probably purchased as much as I used. Incorrigible! ????

    SotD = Chant d’Aromes

I like it! I smell dry/soft peach, woods, white florals, resins and spice. Definitely a proper perfume, very much a Guerlain. It has bits of Mitsouko, Vol de Nuit, Jardins de Bagatelle, and even Shalimar, all in a single spritz.

Thank you to Coumarin for mentioning Cd’A today and to a wonderful NSTer for sending me a generous spray decant from a vintage bottle.

Summer funk, doldrums, malaise, or whatever it is, this too shall pass. Here’s a short article I enjoyed:

you’re welcome, KellyC! the internet is a never-ending source of cuteness and smiles.

Perhaps it’s because the Chant d’Aromes I’m sampling today is vintage, but when I spritzed again it smells of Shalimar even more. It’s the Shali-light I’d hoped to find in the recent Shalimar flankers. I’m really tempted to buy current Cd’A (so inexpensive online!), but I’m trying hard not to buy any more bottles. Maybe I’ll find a tester bottle at a perfume counter someday. :D

So fatigued today from not sleeping well because I got devoured by mosquitoes last night during a TNR mission and was up most of the night scratching. We got an APB yesterday about an injured kitten in the neighborhood so a few of us went searching for it in several backyards. We never found the injured one(who sounded like it was hit by a car from a witness’ description), but did find the mom and her other kitten whom we attempted to trap unsuccessfully. We’ll have to go back, but heartening to meet so many caring neighbors who allowed us into their homes in an attempt to help.
SOTD is BF Monserrat- no peach listed, but yes to apricot and osmanthus! It’s cheerful in any event ????

Gratefully accepting your virtual caffeine ???? It can be overwhelming this time of year-sooo many kittens. A recent mission resulted in trapping 10 out of 22 counted cats in someone’s yard! And several of the cats were pregnant, yikes! All now neutered and returned ???? I love my feline friends and try to do what I can. It’s also great to be part of a community- I’ve met some awesome folks.

Do the cats settle in ok once you return them? I don’t know much about cats and how attached to their terrotories they are.

They do since that’s the home they know. They’re usually only gone for 2 days before they’re returned or 3-4 days if it was a pregnant cat (they abort them in addition to neutering, which is the humane approach). Generally they’re also well fed daily by neighbors or organized volunteers. It keeps them from roaming and getting hit by cars etc.

That is truly priceless work you’ve done. My heart breaks for the non-neutered cats. I’m (almost) okay with them living ferally….just need to be neutered.

I’m ok with them living outdoors- there are too many cats in shelters already living in cages with not enough adoptees. That, to me, is more heartbreaking. Some of the colonies that are organized have little cat shelters with straw for the bad weather. The downside is when the landscape changes because of construction/demolition. The colony I volunteer for which is on the East River by the NYC Ferry pier is being pushed out because another monstrous 40 story apt building is going up there. We’re still trying to figure out a relocation plan and trying to get the oldest and friendliest cat adopted out. She’s been there at least 8 years! If you know anyone… ????

Liberal sprays (12 in total) of English Rose for work. Verry verry nice rose. Not too sweet, not too dry, a bit spicy, very natural-smelling rose. Would rename this ‘Goldilocks Rose’ :D Longevity is good if you can bear to spray on enough. Not a problem for the price I would say.

And then Champagne for home. Ahh.

Yardley. I don’t know about the availability in the US but you can buy it at B**ts in the UK.

Been reformulated many times as it (and Yardley) is as old as the hills. One source says English Rose was introduced in 1913 but according to Fragrantica 1996. Probably the year the brand was re-relaunched or something.

Happy August, friends! It’s still pretty chilly out here in the Bay Area today–a far cry from the sultry east coast Augusts I grew up with.

Thank you all for your very, very sweet birthday wishes yesterday :) Now that it’s August, I should just accept the fact that I am now ripe as a peach at the age of 31 and move on with things. (See how nicely I tied into the CP there?)

I’m wearing Gulbahaar, a gorgeous, silky, fresh-cut rose scent from Sugandhco. Thanks for reminding me to wear it, coin-op!

I go to the east coast to see my parents tomorrow! I wonder if I should bring some perfumes, or avail myself of my mother’s scents. She does not believe in casual perfuming, though, so we can look forward to many exclamations of “why are you wearing perfume?? we aren’t even going anywhere!” over the next few days.

Well I tried and failed with the CP today. I’m wearing Rozy in the voile concentration, which I thought had peach, but only the EDP has peach. Oh well, I still smell good. This one is so well blended I can’t really pick out specific notes. It has a classic perfume/ powdery vibe that matches the Kniepp Almond Blossom body wash I used today.

Last report on St. Clair testing: Frost is also so good! Smoky but not too smoky with florals and rose in particular chiming in mid development. I could honestly see myself purchasing bottles of all three of their perfumes eventually. I’m so impressed with how tight the collection is and how accomplished of a perfumer Diane St. Clair is already with these three. I’d recommend Frost to those who enjoy Anubis.

I also tried Margiela Replica By the Fireplace. So far it’s tied with Lipstick On for first place in my sample set. I think I still have four more to try.

Suddenly we’re in spring because we had a few warm North Westerly days (foehn) but we usually get snow in August…so it’s a case of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing. It’s definitely getting lighter and the days longer. No new leaves on the maples and no magnolias yet.

I haven’t tried Fireside but Nostalgie is lovely. I hope they are both winners for you.

Gosh, yesterday got away from me and I forgot to post. Today is also flying by, but I’m reveling in 80 degree temps after 10 straight days in the upper 90s. Today I’m sampling Jul et Mad Mon Seul Desir, a floral leather that’s quite nice. There are some woody notes, too, and I think some musk. My floral leather craving is satisfied by Sarrasins, but if you’re looking for one this is very nice, better than Cuir de Lancôme to me. I didn’t get much leather in CdL.

I sprayed a bit of Coty exclamation for my peach badge before my shower. (I had a bottle of this in college – I think the only bottle I had at the time.). After I went with the no alcohol Songes sample I got the the Goutal boutique. It’s hanging in there pretty well, I figured it would be fleeting.

I loved Exclamation in middle school. I keep looking at bottles in the drug store … dare I, 30ish years later?

Gosh darn it! My train just got cancelled so it’s going to be a super terrible ride home because a trainful of people just got displaced and the next one is sure to be beyond full. Ugh! And to use jalapeno’s words – it is grody to the max disgusting out with the mugginess!

It took me almost an hour longer to get home! I had a call scheduled at 9 but I cancelled it and offered up a slot for early tomorrow. Oy!

Glad you made it home finally. Was wondering are the morning commutes just as bad? How do you plan for these things, in order to make it to work on time?

Ugh. I had one of those journeys on Friday. I did a mad scurry across town to my train, and just missed it by a whisker. Next one was cancelled. The following one… they didn’t have a train. So change platforms. Then a train arrived. But then no driver was available, so we all had to get off and change platforms. Third train… eventually, and late. Which then had three trains of people on it. On a boiling hot friday evening. UGH.

Ironically, I had managed to get away an hour early by skipping my lunch break… and still ended up being late to meet my visitors.

Oh, I’m a little afraid to look. At least through the upcoming weekend – after that, probably all bets are off.

I don’t have too much peach in my collection except for Mitsouko. I wore the edt on Monday. I may have a sample of vintage edp somewhere here. It’s still super hot, but we are expecting a break in this soon. So I may be able to weather the edp on Friday.

Tonight I’m wearing some Atelier Oolang Infiniti, yesterday was Jasmine et Cigarette. Stay cool everyone!
