Monday scent of the day 7/30

Posted by Robin on 30 July 2018 271 Comments

It's Monday, and it's Paperback Book Day, and it's the International Day of Friendship. What fragrance are you wearing?

Me: waking up slowly in Grace by Grace Coddington.

Reminder: on 8/3, we'll celebrate Peach Month! You know what to do.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I used to wear and loved Tresor years ago when I worked at Lord and Taylor. I would spray it on each time before my shift started. I may have to revisit this one. Good Stuff!

Tresor is so lovely! I have a 30ml that I bought many years ago. It doesn’t matter how many times I have sprayed on it, it feels like the juice increases instead of going down. I have not worn it for a while, so I will probably have some on Friday.

Yours is probably vintage then which I believe packs more of a punch than current juice.

Isn’t that always the case? Never ever ever getting to the bottom-LOL!

If you decide to wear it on Friday we will be scent twins :)

I think the current bottle may be slightly different…more stout and shorter than the older ones which were thinner and taller. Someone with more expertise might chime in. Right now I am using a travel spray which looks pretty generic so not sure what the current bottles look like in real life. My guess is if you bought your bottle years ago it is probably pre reform

My bottle of Tresor is around 15 years old and it is taller than the current one. I really love the bottle. I will browse online for some photographs. I am very curious now.

I used to have a bottle of PdN’s Kiss Me Tender (the original – I think it’s discontinued now) and it also had a Juicy Fruit note. Once I noticed it, it was all I could smell, alas.

I own KMT and get soft powdery marshmallow and hay with a bit of anise. It’s sweet but more of a confectioners sugar than juicy fruit gum to me.

I often read reviews that made it sound so lovely (just like yours does) but it was straight-up gum on me. I’ve since figured out that heliotrope is tricky on my skin.

They are amazingly powerful and destructive. The loss of life, human and animal, and huge impact on habitat is just so horrible. I think only a couple were intentionally started, but even a ”couple” is too many. It’s a good thing I’m not in charge of the world, because I would not be forgiving of any type of violent crime. And arson is a violent crime in my mind.

Unbelievably smokey here, as well, Deva. It looks like there’s been a volcanic eruption (it is, of course, the terrible wildfires across California). I think you might be further north than me right now, closer to the Redding fire. Stay safe.

Smoky here too, although we don’t have the air alert that seems to be covering the entire Central Valley. Doesn’t smell bad, just a yellow haze everywhere. CA can be very inhospitable sometimes…it’s a far more harsh environment than most folks realize.

Have a calm weekend. Today we have 32*C here. Going swimming later to cool down.

They have a blind sniffing experience and also carry some lines not available at some of the other shops (Zoologist, Jazmin Sarai, Christophe Laudamiel’s The Zoo collection to name a few).

Yes, unfortunately is Monday again, ????. Busy weekend and I am exhausted and falling asleep on my desk. Coffee to the rescue, since I have another crazy week here at work.

Wearing Diptyque L’Ombre Dans L’Eau. Clunk! Thunk! Plunk! Good bye my dear sample! ????. Being green scents lover, this has been on my never ending fb shopping list for a long time. It might be one of the perfumes I get at the end of the year. Who knows…

    Have a nice day everyone!

Passing on the enabling from Ede97005 last week, there’s a $72 Diptyque gift set in the Nordstrom anniversary sale that includes a mini of L’Ombre plus candles and a few other minis… yes I bought one, but it was a gift card so I’m sure it doesn’t count!

      Oh boy!!! Get some coffee…STAT!

Yay to another sample gone!!! You know you love it and it will always be there when you are ready to make another purchase.

I remember years ago Dyptique used to do sample sales in the city. Do they still do that? Maybe you could pick up a bottle then at a significantly discounted price.

I am not sure if Diptyque still do the sample sales. I remember going to the
annual sale at Century21 where I grabbed my fb of Philosykos and some candles and perfumes for holiday presents, but I lost track of it.

I am wearing New Haarlem today. It’s taken me years to be able to try it – at one point I even called Bond no 9 to ask to buy a sample and they refused. But thanks to Millicent, I obtained a decant at the latest freebiemeet.

And I’m in love. Ooh boy, this smells good! I don’t dare leave the air conditioned house because I might suffocate, but it smells glorious.

Have a wonderful day. Stay cool, or if it’s your winter, stay warm!

I probably should have sampled it when I was in SAKS not that long ago. There is always next time as I am not in a rush to try anything that “might” turn into a lemming-LOL!

I still smell fairly strongly of the Smell Bent Prairie Nymph I put on last night, so that’s my SOTD. Even though it’s an EDT it goes on with an oily sheen, so I think that’s why it’s so long lasting. I’m almost done with my travel spray and ordered a full bottle last night at 25% off. I’ve loved this one since its release sand have gone through 1 travel spray before this one, so it was time. I also threw in a travel spray of 1999, which is described as grapefruit soda.

I did once; it just disappeared into the postal miasma. If tracking shows it wasn’t delivered then you should have no issues getting your money back; Ebay is totally biased in favor of the buyer. Contact the seller first, and if they don’t make it right, just file a claim with Ebay.

I have found that eBay wants buyers and sellers to both be happy because they make money off both ends. So any problems you have that the seller won’t rectify open an issue and follow the process and you will get a refund. eBay will ultimately take the hit for both buyers and sellers to ensure both sides are happy and keeping buying/selling.

Still on London trip, so wearing Privet Bloom, but unfortunately all I can smell is something by a brand I was formerly unaware of called Memo, fragrance is Irish Leather & a lovely chap in Harvey Nicks got a little over-enthusiastic when spritzing me this morning! I’ve washed my arm at least 3 times, to no avail, & must confess I’m not a fan. The company has a pretty large range, & some of the prices are just ridiculous, & the brand’s concept struck me as a little pretentious. Also popped by Jovoy & Liberty but nothing grabbed me, so at least I won’t have to revisit any of the above when I’m back in November. The Nicolai shop in Seymour Street is on tomorrow’s ‘to do’ list, but I have to be at Heathrow mid afternoon, so don’t think I’ll have time to do anything else ‘smellies related’ as I do have a couple of other things to do.

It’s an internal UK flight, so no duty free, moreover 100ml per container max still applies – believe me, I’ve thought of buying sample sets when i’ve been elsewhere in the UK with hand carry luggage only but dismantling lovely packaging to then try to fit however many samples into regulation plastic bag when one already has minis of cleanser, toner, moisturiser, shampoo, handcream, deodorant, wet wipes (yes, they count as ‘liquid’!), toothpaste, lip balm & most importantly fragrance, is packing as an art form in itself!

I love peach scents, but they feel too heavy for the heat. Maybe later in the week when it’s supposed to cool off a bit. SOTD is Hermes Rhubarbe Ecarlate, need something tart to cut the heat.

Husband got called up to go fight the fires in Mendocino county. He left at 10pm Saturday night, should be there for a week. You know resources are stretched thin when they start calling up volunteers to go out of the area; usually they hold down the fort at home while the paid guys get moved around the state. He’s thrilled, of course; me, notsomuch. At least I know he’s just driving a water tender (big box of water on wheels) making deliveries to the engines that are fighting the fires… a bit safer than being on the lines. Hoping everyone up there stays safe.

Coming back from LA a couple of weeks ago, 3 trucks from the Horseshoe Meadow Hotshots passes me by on I5, headed north. They are probably still fighting whatever fire they were headed to. I really don’t know how these guys can do it week after week! I think firefighters are the definition of heros. Best of luck to your hubby!

SOTD is Grimoire. This is such an elegant piece. It reminds me of a combination of Mem by Bogue and Lux by Mona d’Orio. The cedar and lavender jump out and blend so beautifully in an understated incensy way that i can’t stop smelling the scent. It has a graceful undertone that seems like a skin scent. Really beautiful. I want a full bottle.

I’m terribly sleepy this morning after an exciting weekend. I had a birthday party on Saturday night (my birthday is tomorrow) with eighteen guests, which is a lot for a not-large apartment! It was panic-inducing because we nearly ran out of food!!!!!! This has never ever happened to me. I usually make about 1.5x as much food as I need, but this time, I miscalculated desperately.

I did get PRESENTS! Lots of smelly things (soaps, bath bombs, creams), and my Parisian friend gave me a gorgeous sample set from Sens Unique, a perfumerie in Paris that I haven’t seen mentioned here. From that set, I’m wearing Cuir de Reve by David Jourquin today! It’s a gorgeous, sweet, warm leather with a heavy dose of patchouli and vanilla.

We are showing my French friend a good old American time! We went on a fruit tree walk, went to supermarkets (American supermarkets are fabulous!), and went on a fairly arduous seven-mile hike through the redwood forests. That’s pretty typically American, right? We chose our meals carefully–Korean for the first lunch, then Mexican for the second lunch and solid American burgers for the second dinner. I’m determined to convince her that the food scene in America is roughly infinitely superior to the French impression of the American food scene (I think they think we eat McDonald’s all the time).

2 things I have yet to find in Cleveland: korean food (how will I get through winter without a korean tofu house?) and real Mexican. There are Mexican restaurants here but possibly no real tacos…

Don’t forget tollhouse, peanut butter, and oatmeal cookies. Or red velvet, carrot, and German chocolate cake. And fruit pies! To demonstrate our authority on the dessert front ???? Good show thus far!

If they are French, they must love wine. Offer a Californian Cabernet Sauvignon or Chardonnay (Luminus from Beringer is amazing). Red velvet and carrot cake aren’;t wins with my French friends but they like salted caramel icecream – i think salted caramel is different in US than in France but in a good way. And obviously American steakhouses make a good impression, it’s hard to beat a good classic American steak – and did you know American cuts are actually different from European ones?

Enjoying my sample of Bal d’Afrique today – technically no peach note but it does have a fruity aspect.

Started two fairly good mystery/thriller TV series over the weekend: Killing Eve and The Frozen Dead. Both worth a look for anyone who needs something to watch!

Cool overcast day that began with Prada Vetiver on top of arms and an accidental drenching of Eau Guerlain beneath. The latter faded alarmingly quickly.

I’m now in Phaedon Dzhari, which I wore and loved a couple of summers ago. We’ll see if it lives up to my memories (I just sprayed.)

I’ll be eating peaches this week (they’re ripening on the counter right now.) Peach is one of the few perfume notes I can’t abide so won’t be wearing any.

Friendship day and paperback book day – my best friend (who is now miles away in San Francisco) loves books and this makes me think of her a lot.
Since she loves vanilla, i’m in a double-vanilla combo of Lush Vanillary and Hermessence Vanille Galante – which is actually a gift from her.
So it’s a sweet smelling day with sweet thoughts too!

Back from my colonoscopy (no gory details, sorry for even mentioning the word)… this was a screening because I hit that big birthday this year. Everything seems to be fine. :) Wore beloved Le Temps d’une Fete.

This is the last week Gaze will be at home this summer! Va Tech doesn’t start classes until Aug. 20, but he’s one of the sophomore cadets designated to assist with New Cadet Week, so he has to move back on the 5th and do a week of training beforehand as well as work the following week. His cousin (who’s not in the Corps of Cadets) doesn’t have to move in until the 18th and I’m a little jealous of my SIL.

Hi everyone! SOTD is Kiehl’s Musk oil with a squirt of SL’s Bois Vanille. :)
I discovered an enjoyable book in the dollar bin at my library, written by Nelson DeMille called The Panther. I’m only a few chapters in, but already, it’s quite engrossing and enjoyable, the author really did his research on Middle Eastern cultures.

Tried a new recipe this weekend, it’s Padma Lakshmi’s Yogurt Rice – it’s a mixture of rice, cool yogurt and cucumber mixed with spicy chilis and mustart seeds. It’s spicy (which I like) but I’m afraid burnt my poor husband’s tongue off!

    Hi perfumista friends,
Still just tentatively dipping my toe in here after a pretty long break. Very much enjoying all the comments.
So my Luckyscent order of The Musc from Essential Parfums arrived last night and I sprayed some on my arms right away. Notes are ginger, lavender, beeswax, sandalwood and musks (serenolide an nirvanolide I believe). I was a bit underwhelmed, I think it’s a case of you get what you pay for. The initial spritz reminded me a little of laundry soap but very pleasant laundry soap, after about an hour the blend seemed to hang together a bit like a kitten wearing Musk Tonkin and it was ok but I didn’t love it. This morning all the other notes were gone except a faint trace of musk. Bummer because the ingredients sounded very good. In any case I just got the 10 ml and will keep it in my bag for emergencies. The two stars of the LS order were the samples they sent: Chypre Mousse (OMG love love love love) and Jubilation 25 (really love it, it’s a lot like vintage Rochas Femme) The CM suits my personality and wears better on me than the Jub25. But I’m loving both very much.

Thanks Calypso. They are both winners. I will keep testing them to see. Chypre Mousse is just so weird and wonderful. It’s actually turning kind of sweet on my skin in it’s herby loamy way. But I do love Jub25 too, especially when the ylang calms down a little and the spice starts developing.

The Jubilation 25 is a bit of a skank fest on me, a bit like looking down and discovering a pair of double D’s in a bullet bra. There is no fruit except lemon, but I swear the stuff smells like spiced peaches through its development. Could be the lemon tarragon davana combo. In any case it’s a little too vavoom for my tastes, although totally gorgeous. Just as well because the price….

That IS a funny description! It’s funny, people did wear it back when we had skank day, but it’s just never struck me that way at all. I simply find it beyond elegant, kind of like Chanel No. 5 or something. For the skanfest that gives me that va-va-voom feeling, I’d nominate Amoureuse, which I also love, but never feel I can quite live up to.

Hello, NST! Busy weekend for me… Saturday was a game day, where I spent about 10 hours playing tabletop games with some friends. Sunday was errands. Two days of sunshine was not enough!!

Oh, before I forget, Marjorie Rose gets an enabler’s pin for Endangered Species Milk Chocolate. I have been nibbling on a bar of it for the past few days. I do not get mocha, though. I taste a lovely caramel note in with the chocolate which I enjoy. Yummy!

SOTD = back to testing samples. Up today is La Femme Prada, which starts off as a nice solar floral. Unfortunately, it develops the dreaded “nail polish” or “vinyl shower curtain” note on me. So off to the “Give” pile it goes.

SotD = Bogue MEM, from a sample

I forget how much I enjoy MEM. It’s a revelation every time.

Fresh, ripe peaches smell like nothing else, so very beautiful. I will enjoy a long think over peach scents I might wear. Ylang and champaca sometimes remind me of peaches. J’adore smells of peaches to my nose, as does Angel when I get a whiff from far, far away. I wish I could smell an old bottle of Chopard Casmir, it had a fabulous peach note.

True confession: as a child I loved peach flavored Jell-O with canned mandarin orange segments.

Nothing wrong with Jell-O – I’m sure we all consumed lots of it as kids growing up in the 70s and 80s! Ambrosia salad, seafoam salad, so many salads! We still make Jell-O for our daughters once in a while and they love it – sometimes we put it in fun silicone mold shapes. And get more exotic/different flavors from the Mexican grocery stores: mango, horchata, grape, pistachio, and vanilla!

Oh! When you crack the shrinkwrap please do let us know if Casmir still has a nice peach note. When it was a new scent it was so distinctive, it really stood out (and filled the air) at the department store perfume counter I often visited on my lunch hour. But that was more than 20 years ago.

I really should check a few stores to see if there’s a Casmir tester somewhere. Though the “large sample size” bottles for sale online are practically perfumath free, my mantra is no-new-bottles, no-new-bottles, no-new-bottles. ;)

SOTD = Sultan Pasha Attar Irisoir

Peach is not in the house today. I felt like wearing something opulent but close to skin and this fit the bill.

I wore NVC Rahele yesterday in honor of Portia Turbo (APJ) and Jin’s wedding. I underspritz and of course, it did not last long. It was nice while it lasted. I then decided to wear Hermes Myrrh Eglantine. Big mistake because it smelled like sour dill pickle with mint toothpaste. Methinks it is the layering with the remnants of Rahele that caused this yucky combo. I will have to try ME on it’s own although I was kinda traumatized that the re-test may be a long ways away.

In other news, I witnessed a disturbing scene during my morning commute. It’s not a woe by any means since I was not subjected to it other than a slight delay. A woman who looked to be in her 20s was being tended to by paramedics. I don’t know the circumstance of why she was on the ground but she was half-way sitting up in a pike position with her back supported by a paramedic. She looked quite out of it and was trying to sit up straighter or stand up. A policeman poked his head into my train car and asked if anyone spoke Language X. After a few beats of silence, a young guy reluctantly got up to offer his assistance. After about 20 seconds of talking (which I didn’t hear), it was clear that the wrong language was identified and the guy returned to the train car, got his seat back and the train went on its way. Two things came to mind: 1) paramedics should probably carry an o-ring of cards to flip through to ascertain what language someone speaks and/or with which to communicate various medical symptoms via pictures and 2) unless there are extenuating circumstances, immigrants should learn English even if cultural assimilation lags behind.

In other news, over the weekend, there was a stampede to get out of a subway and platform when someone yelled “gun”. After the incident was over, there were some footwear left behind. Moral of the story? When commuting, wear sensible shoes (read: no flip flops, open toed shoes) that fit well AND do not air out your stinky dogs.

Sounds like the young lady you saw on your commute had what medicos call “a sinkable episode”, aka fainting.

Irisoir sounds pretty. Rahele + Myrrh Eglantine = A pretty pickle!

hope you can stand to give Myrrh Eglantine another outing soon. It is a very pretty rose. Now that I think about it, I need to give it another try. The far dry down was kind of odd, maybe because I wore PHI and Vol de Nuit the day before.

I’ll give it another outing but need to make sure I don’t wear it on top of something else.

Wearing a few sprays of Mitsouko EDT with some BBW peach body butter tonight.
I got a bit too much sun yesterday when we visited my niece and her family so the butter is a welcome addition tonight.

We had a great visit. Her son just LOVED the fresh cherries we brought. He had juice all over his face and was running down his hands; he couldn’t stop eating them!
