Friday scent of the day 7/27

Posted by Robin on 27 July 2018 275 Comments

Whew, Friday is here! And it's the Buck Moon aka Thunder Moon tonight, plus, it's a blood moon. Our community project for today: pick your poison for the full moon.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

Me: I went the obvious route, with Tauer Perfumes Sotto La Luna Tuberose.

Reminder: on 8/3, we'll celebrate Peach Month! You know what to do.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

My sample is a vintage version (PDT, I think), so I have no idea how the modern version smells.
To my nose it is a herbal/leathery/woody/aldehydic/chypre scent. I struggle to describe it. It reminds me of other old-school aldehydic scents (aldehydes are warm and soothing here), but it’s much less floral than an average floral aldehyde. I can easily imagine it on a man.

I’m wearing the last of my decant of Barbara Bui.

    Hello Hello
Today is my fasting day, so I do not wear perfume (or makeup)

I am going to the New Museum today to see The Mother Tongue exhibit

I can still smell the Chanel Tendre flanker on my dress from yesterday. Beautiful.

If I might ask, are you fasting for health reasons? I’ve been reading a lot of studies about how prolonged fasting (as well as some forms of intermittent) benefits various systems in the body, and have myself done some fasting to try and trigger these types of positive changes.

        Lisa,
I do intermittent fasting and I feel much better for it. Granted, I have three digestive auto-immune diseases, but my system needs the rest and overall, I feel far better, less brain fog, reduced fatigue, less joint pain.

            I fast two different ways.
The easiest is I consume clear broths (miso or veggie are my favorites) and juices (kale, ginger, lemon & apple) for only for 24 hours. Nothing solid.

The other method I fast is, four days a week, I eat a diet of 1400 calories broken into two main meals (breakfast and lunch with a snack at 2pm), I eat nothing after 3pm on that day.
On the other three days, I eat 950 calories distributed the same way, and eat nothing after 3pm.
At any given time, I drink 60-80 ounces of water.
I have three digestive autoimmune diseases with related joint pain, resting my system by eating light actually relieves a lot of the pain (for me).

          • SmokeyToes says:
            27 July 2018 at 7:44 pm

It’s strange, but I actually have more energy on the days I’m fasting and only consuming liquids. But given I’m not eating the entire time I’m hospitalized (normally for three days every 10-12 weeks) I’m accustomed to not eating.

It’s no fun, I wouldn’t wish my situation on anyone but I make the most of it. I’m fortunate my UCSF nurses are so wonderful, I make them cookies and banana nut bread to take my mind off the unpleasant things. :)

I’ve been reading the research and listening to interviews by Valter Longo, and have been intrigued by it/them. I am prone to a little bit of biohacking, as long as it is not too extreme and doesn’t put me in danger. I’m also at the point in my life where I am trying to make a real difference in the quality of my later years.

Sounds like IF works well for you – that’s wonderful!

I fast for spiritual reasons. Usually once or twice a month.

I know many people who have said fasting for health reasons has helped them. Bravo Smokeytoes & Lisa D for participating in fasting. Its very hard. Especially when I am making dinner and lunch for my family and not eating!

I’m fragrance-free today as I’m rushing around finishing odd jobs & getting organised for my London long weekend starting with a flight which means my alarm is set for stupid o’clock tomorrow morning! Main decision is which sample to take with me – as ever, I’m travelling light with hand baggage only. My standby for other recent rips has been Perfumer H Rose Green, basically because of the very generous sample size given to me a couple of London visits ago, but other samples I have ‘blagged’ lately are Hermes Muguet Porcelaine (I love lily of the valley) & Myrrhe Eglantine (which I think the chap gave me because when he asked I told him I was wearing Rose Green), Dior Cachemere (no idea why the chap in Frasers in Glasgow gave me this one!), Penhaligon’s Blasted Bloom & the freebie roll-on of Privet Bloom which the lovely lady I dealt with in New York popped in with my order of a bottle which was posted to friends in Seattle we were going to visit a couple of years ago (Space NK no longer have it & they were my only option in the UK). Given the prospective London weather, I’m thinking the Muguet Porcelaine or Privet Bloom, for freshness’ sake – untried ones above are Myrrhe Eglantine & Cachemere, & I’m thinking hot & sticky weather would not be good for an initial tryout of either!

Thank you for your input – I’m now intrigued by Myrrhe Eglantine (which I will try sooner rather than later given what you said) but have gone with Privet Bloom, purely because it’s the one I’ve had for the longest. Currently have thunder, lightning & torrential rain here in Aberdeen, been going on for a few hours, & if it continues I may be kept awake by the noise! Have had quite a few stupid o’clock starts to my various excursions this year, so am well used to it, but your good luck wishes are appreciated.

Have a great weekend everyone! I am doing something I NEVER, EVER thought I’d be doing….taking my middle kid to a Repticon show to choose a pet snake for her belated birthday wish. Motherhood takes a person to places unknown and unexpected. My only stipulation was that it has to be a snake that stays SMALL and SKINNY! LOL No creatures allowed in the house that can get big enough to eat other family members….. :)

Oh kudos to your kiddo for the snake love! They are amazing creatures. When I was a young thing, I was the snake whisperer. Friends would find injured snakes, bring them to me, I would take them to the vet, keep them to fatten them up, and release them in a safe place where the environment wasn’t subject to development, etc.

I had a 5ft Florida King Snake (endangered) when my brother got married. We had company from all over the U.K. come, and one of my uncles got my room. Pretty sure he didn’t sleep a wink! ????

I believe the one she is hoping to get (a rosy sand boa) gets about 3 feet in length, and lives around 20 years with good care! It will start in a 10 gallon tank for a while, then 20 gallon as an adult…..

Olivine Atelier More Than the Stars perfume oil. That’s the best I’ve got. This is my favorite from the line though, with top notes of almond, lily and gardenia.
A couple of years ago my husband talked me into a full moon paddle. The one thing that had not occurred to me before we were out on the water was: the bats! Omg, they were everywhere swooping down towards the water eating mosquitos. I could hardly enjoy myself for fear of one getting caught in my hair. Needless to say, that was the first and the last time we will do that! Lol. I will keep my canoeing to the daytime hours.

Thunder moon is living up to its name here: we had the most spectacular thunder and lightning late last night. And a glorious downpour (though the heat was back today).

a spot of vintage Miss Dior today…though might change that later. Maybe something red, or black, for the lunar eclipse/blood moon…

I think so. Though the modern “originale” version isn’t too bad at all, the vintage is dryer and has a lot more spine and a lot more sauciness. She’s like the aunt with the *very* interesting history, of the not devant les enfants type…

It’s nice… but it’s also Berdoues Assam of India, juiced up a bit. Doesn’t last any longer than the Berdoues, either. Money saved for the rest of you :)

Yeah foxes make the strangest noises.

We have foxes in the back yard . . . I believe the YOWP YOWP is the vixen mating call. It does wake you up at night but is nowhere as hair-raising as the *actual* mating sounds. It’s like someone being axe murdered.

Is Kooky doing that weird clackety-clack thing with the jittery mouth? Otto does that when he’s really excited by watching birds. I can also get him to do it in synch with me, if I do it myself. But then, we also try to put each other to sleep by staring at each other, and slowly, repeatedly, closing our eyes. We are bonded, it is true.

Kooky was just whining this time. My husband can get our cats to go to sleep by crooning “sleepy…. sleepy…” at them. Silly furries.

Big yay for Friday! Wearing Au Pays de la Fleur d’Oranger Liberte Boheme (which is a mouthful). It’s a soft sweet herbal musk on me, no sharp edges and only very lightly floral despite floral notes being listed. Lovely for summer and the Buck Moon!

Wearing Caleche today for obscure personal reasons. At home there is a picture of me and Primary Partner, taken while we were in Italy, underneath a gorgeous full moon, just as it was rising around twilight. I was wearing Caleche when the picture was taken, so I wanted to put it on again today too.

I’m just managing to start a somewhat normal day here with my second cup of coffee. My first normal day in quite a long time. The past few days after my surgery have been pretty rough due to a combination of pain and awful side effects of pain medications. I’ve quit the meds and am starting to feel better. I had so much nausea that I couldn’t put on any perfume. Pretty awful eh. I will try some today but haven’t made up my mind yet what to try, it’s got to be something kind of mild. I’ve got a home health care worker coming today. Had to work up courage to give myself a shot in the stomach this morning (for blood clots) and will do it for 3 weeks. This ain’t fun. Anyway, but on the CP, here’s a favorite moon picture of mine: https://www.flickr.com/photos/94283635@N00/2769784914/in/photolist-Jvxu1W-25nX6fn-26EjZtk-o6pRmv-iqtXhe-doHESk-crsfm1-aXx4aF-a3PpUR-a2rXzE-9jWazf-8DuVuc-7GsVrX-7GsVsH-6eodtm-5YRYEg-5P6BcN-5dKSyj-4nTJxC-4fBG6u-dV9nc-4fso9b-2megfY-z9uF3-jjcm4-2wwTy-7oye-jpgL

Ugh, so sorry you’re experiencing such nausea post-surgery. I hope things subside for you soon.
I have surgical procedures every 8-10 weeks, bland foods (jook porridge or polenta), always help to ease the transition into eating again.

It’s funny how we all have that one note that we can’t see ourselves wearing until we stumble upon the perfume that seems to work.

The note I never thought I could wear is tuberose – until I spritzed Serge Luten’s Tubereuse Criminelle. The opening menthol note is so compelling it drew me in immediately.

Come to think of it, that might make for an interesting Friday CP poll. :)

With two heading to college and the last one going next year (although he is taking college classes over the summer now) I have been on a shoestring budget and can no longer afford Eden Botanicals (they were my go to for many years and the prices have risen astronomically over the past three or so years). I now use all of the NOW products including carrier oils and jojoba oils. I always look for the best prices between All Star Health and Vitacost (which often sends me relatively large percent off codes). While they don’t have the more “exotic” essential oils that Eden does NOW brands have enough to keep me happy. And this summer I am working on enjoying and USING UP some of my essential and carrier oils as well for they all have expiration dates!!!

I keep my citruses in the fridge as they tend to breakdown sooner… I try to use them up within two years. However, a few actually get better with time… patchouli can age beautiful. I remember Laurie Erickson advising me to use within a year or two for most essential oils. Perfume or fragrance oils last much longer.

Looking forward to a starry, moonlit night -and a glimpse of Mars -for tonight’s Friday night concert-in-the park. Befitting today’s theme and the occasion, I’ll be wearing AG Les Nuits d’Hadrien layered over BBW Italian Citrus Sun. For that Mediterranean vibe, I’ll be inhaling (my arm) deeply, imagining the trees overhead are cypress (not maple), and hoping tonight’s big band sound may include ‘Arrivederci Roma’ or ‘La Mer.’ Skipping the usual margaritas, our picnic basket will include French rose wine, a French baguette, fruit and mixed nuts, and macarons for dessert.

Ciel Woman because sky plus it’s office friendly. I’m so close to finishing my manufacturer’s sample but realized that the tube for the sprayer doesn’t reach the bottle of the bottle. So I’ve gotten as much out as I can spray and will have to pull off the sprayer and dab the rest. Maybe tonight I’ll wear Moon Bloom or Honey and the Moon, but I didn’t think either were appropriate for my technically scent free workplace.

Last night’s sampling yielded better results though neither was love. I am working my way through the Margiela Replica discovery set. I tried Flower Market and Promenade in the Gardens. Flower Market is nice and reminded me of Ciel light actually. It faded fairly quickly into synthetic nondescript sweet floral. Promenade was a rose patchouli perfume to my nose and reminded me of things I’ve already smelled. It was more deep, complex and long lasting than Flower Market.

Sticking to “Use It Up” I’m trying to clear the samples off the top of the perfume cabinet. Today’s sample is Moonlight in Heaven, a coconut fruit-fest that Kilian probably art-directed in his sleep. I did manage to use up about half the sample, and it has “moon” in the name, so all is good here.

Super late today, didn’t even wake up till about 9am, which is abnormal.

In a big blast of Queen today! She’s been on my mind lately, so I’m once again deviating from the unofficial Use It Up CP. Sorry VT!

I was woken this morning about 130am by what sounded like hyenas laughing! Not too likely in this neck of the woods, so they must have been coyotes. They were laughing and chuckling, no howling per se, and the sound echoed up and down the little canyon/valley I park in at night. T-Rex bolted upright, cocking her this way and that, trying to look out the campertop windows to see what was going on. It was eerie/spooky/cool, and I got up myself to look out the window. The clearing was bright as day, trees and boulders throwing shadows across the landscape created by an amazingly bright moon. No a single stem of grass moved, quiet as a grave. ..

Queen for the win! That stuff is good.

One of my all-time favorite memories is hearing a lion roar in the night. It is LOUD! I mean, you can feel it as well as hear it. And then looking carefully out the window and seeing nothing. Eerie, but wonderful.

We were in a tent in the Serengeti — fortunately on an elevated platform — when a couple of water buffalo decided to have a fight in the middle of the night right outside our tent. The earth shook! I was sure glad to be up above the fray.

        Do what? Camp?

Yesterday a 22 year old motorcyclist traveling east was killed on scene when a pickup truck turned left to travel west right in front of him. Dead, with only 1/3 of his life lived.
We, as a culture, are conditioned to fear nature because we are now so removed from it. Nature is completely objective, shows no favorites, and doesn’t curry favor. While you might get killed if you’re stupid, unlucky, or in the wrong place at the wrong time, nature is not malevolent like some humans. Nor is she a drunk soccer mom barreling down a highway at 80 mph with a load of kids and three sheets to the wind.

For the small percentage of people that might want to mess with a person in my situation (or my dog), I have made plans and preparations.????

It’s not just the nature, it’s the traveling, it’s the self reliance that I am in awe of. Because of my crazy life anxiety, I don’t even drive on the highway anymore. I love reading about your travels, and I cheer you on every day.

Oh, I am your sister in anxiety! ???? I’m afraid of bridges, driving on some of these roads that have a steep drop off and no safety barriers whatsoever! I’m afraid of a dead battery or car trouble on a dark deserted highway at night, I’m afraid of losing my dog, or having either of us injured due to my negligence or ignorance! I’m afraid of rounding a corner and coming across a sow and her cubs, or getting bushwhacked by a mountain lion that has been stalking T-Rex since she is such a delightful mouthful! I’m mostly afraid of the very small percentage of people who like to harm others! See? So we are really the same regarding anxiety. I have learned through life (and some cognitive therapy!) to face these things because I don’t like being controlled by them. The exact reason I gave up smoking! I didn’t like the control tobacco had over me. TMI, I’m sure, but there is nothing extraordinary or brave about me. Just an average gal✌????

TGIF! I am attending a seminar today and I am counting the hours to be finished.

I sprayed a whole sample of Hanae Mori Magical Moon. I do not find anything magical on this perfume. Super sweet fruity floral. Notes listed are guava, coconut, pineapple, sugar cane, vanilla, patchouli etc. It is more appropriate for colder temperatures. This is a NO for me. CLUNK!
Tonight I will spray on some Bvlgari Au the Bleue, which I find peaceful, matching with the moon pictures posted here and as beautiful as the full moon is. Hope the eclipse gives all a sense of peace, comfort and positive energy.

    Take care everyone!

We will get to see the total eclipse here around 8am just as the moon sets and the sun begins to rise. To see it I will have to go and find a lookout point somewhere as there is a big hill between me and the horizon. It’s 5am now and the moon is looking nice and full and glowy. I cut my hair yesterday with the kitchen scissors ( the nail scissors were blunt and then I found some purple coloured toner stuff on special in the supermarket and whacked that on. The directions said to leave it for two minutes which didn’t seem like much bang for my buck so I left it for five hours and now my hair is kind of silvery grey with a pale violet rinse, better than grlonde. So now my life is perfect. Journey for me. Fly me to the moon with Astrid G!

Moon reporter checking in….wow!!!! Not a cloud in the sky and I saw the eclipse from before the first nibble out of the corner until the total eclipse. It was fantastic. It was at its best, for me, when the moon was 3/4 obscured as that was when it went rusty red. After that the sky started getting a bit too light so when the total eclipse arrived the moon just dissolved into the sky, completely faded away with just the palest ghost image. I said hello to all of you, knowing you were wearing moon scents. Then it sank below the horizon and we had a beautiful pink sunrise. So happy to have seen it and glad I got out of bed (I almost couldn’t be bothered).

The moon was obscured by cloud here, so we didn’t see the full eclipse which was around dusk (sunset was about 9.30). It’s raining now, so I think we might be out of luck even for the long drawn out partial…

I’m failing at the community project, but I’m wearing le Labo Iris 39 perfume oil from a sample someone sent me a long time ago, and it’s really splendid. I do not want to love le Labo, because I do not love their prices, and their candles look stupid, but they are really good at some things–like making an iris scent. Phew. I just looked it up, and the perfume oil is $147 for 30 mL. No thank you. (But if it were half that price–maybe? probably?)

The orris butter from Eden Botanicals is perfection! I bought 1 dram of 8% and 15% irones as per your suggestion and I have not dared to dilute them at all. I apply a tiny mini on my wrists once in a while and I get absolutely delighted. Nothing can beat orris butter.

PSA: Laurie E has some perfume left! Check it out, if you’re still hoping to get some of her perfume!

And she says, “I think I have found someone excellent to carry on with SSS,” which is super-duper exciting! And means that you might not need to desperately try to buy up her remaining stock anyway :)

Sounds like I get an enabler pin???

Besides, this is supporting small businesses. It’s like a charitable donation, really.

Super crazy day here. I went for my hair appointment, and my stylist did an amazing job as usual. I wore some Bronze Goddess to my appointment.

We’ve had about 8 interface fires in the area recently in the last 2 weeks, so the provincial Forest Service has gotten them under control quickly. On the way home today from my appointment there were flames coming from the mountainside about 3 blocks from our house. Luckily everyone around there is on high alert and the fire department was contacted right away. They have been hitting this fire all afternoon since it’s thisclose to houses. Planes and helicopters gave been going back and forth, they are still dropping water and fire retardant on it for 3 hours. Seems as though his fire may have been started by an arsonist as we aren’t that close to the other fires burning currently. Sorry for the rant!!

No need to apologize in my book! Having fires that close to you is scary stuff!

There is a special hell for arsonists! That close is SUPER scary! Hope they manage to contain and extinguish the fire quickly!

I’ve been reading about these awful fires. They are certainly rant-worthy. Hoping firefighters are able to contain them.

Most of the fires close by in the provincial parks area were lightning-started about 10 days from a crazy lightning storm, but it seems as though the one in my neighborhood was started by an arsonist. Absolutely mind-boggling, as they think they won’t be arrested. Last year when there were natural wildfires burning further north most of the summer, but yet there was an a**h**e starting trees and shrubs on fire in my city who was finally arrested.

From what I personally saw this afternoon, I have no doubt they will get this fire taken care of sooner than later.

        Thanks everyone!!

Beautiful perfume and bottle! I wish KL would come out with some new beauties, like he used to have. Vintage KL is probably in my top 5 favorite perfumes ever.

Me too, Sun Moon & Stars was a favorite of mine in the 90’s ~ I love my little blue bottle.

Oh, I remember the vintage KL, it was a friend’s signature scent and it was so heavenly! I regret not scooping up a bottle at an antique store when I saw it a few months ago. I think it was going for $15. *kicks self*

    SOTD = Diptyque Volutes EDP

Yesterday, I wore the EDT. They are quite different and i love them both. The EDP is louder and heavier and I was only able to wear 5 sprays (vs. mmm 8 or maybe a little more of the EDT). The EDP is fruitier and leathery.

Now just bear with me as I explain why I am on theme with the Buck Moon. I understand that the Buck Moon is around the time when the bucks grow their antlers, and said antlers are used to attract doe and/or fight off other bucks. Although I have not seen this for myself, I would imagine that amorous deer get googly-eyed and their eyeballs swirl around (maybe this is just a cartoonish representation). “Volute” is a spiral scroll and googly-eyed swirls look like a volute. Partial credit, at least?

NJ is the throes of continued hot/humid yuckiness for weeks on end although technically not a heat wave because temps have not reached 90+. Today, we had torrential downpours. As luck would have it, I was caught in one as I was exiting the train station on my way home. Instead of a 10 minute drive, I did not reach home until 40 minutes later! I had to suffer through a woman who was straddling 2 lanes (I thought she was indecisive as the go straight lane beyond had heavy traffic but the road if she makes a right turn sometimes gets flooded. When she finally veered towards the left to be in her own lane, I passed her and saw that she was TEXTING! I should have beeped my horn but I decided to take the high road and remain calm. I was rewarded with a rainbow in a spot where there’s usually a rainbow when the conditions are right.

Now off to eat dinner and read what everyone picked!

Sad to say, it would probably take either an accident or a ticket with fine and points to make a text addict stop. It rained so hard that my windshield wipers at the highest setting was barely able to clear the windshield. I’m glad I went to Wegmans yesterday to pick up mom’s medication because the road to get there was closed due to flooding.

And with some folks, probably not even a ticket or an accident would stop them. Scary.
