Thursday scent of the day 7/26

Posted by Robin on 26 July 2018 334 Comments

It's Almost-Friday, and it's Chili Dog Day, and Mick Jagger is 75. What fragrance are you wearing?

Me: The Different Company Le 15. I had not worn it in ages and I'd forgotten how much I like it.

Reminder: on 7/27 we'll celebrate the Buck Moon...pick your poison for the full moon tonight.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Ivoire, as usual.

When you’re trying to use up a bottle, why does the level never seem to go down?

I’ve a 100ml bottle of 2012 Ivoire. Been draining it for three years to 20mls now. The emptier the bottle, the more you can notice it evaporate if not used frequently though . . . maybe an alternative strategy?

Just read your review of your SOTD and it sounds gorgeous. I had intended to wear Divine but somehow managed to forget I wanted to, and am instead wearing Angéliques sous la Pluie. It’s lovely but vanishes quickly in hot temperatures.

I don’t think you can buy Le 15 anymore, which is just as well…it never came in a small enough size for me.

And Divine…gosh, have not worn anything from them in ages either.

I wear them once in a while and always love them when I do. It’s a nice house, not wildly original but solid, if you know what I mean.

Oh! Mick Jagger and I are birthday buddies! I wonder if we are also birthday scent twins: I’m wearing a wonderful birthday present, a bottle of (newly reissued) Kate Walsh Boyfriend. It is, to my delight, every bit as tasty as the original was!

I’d like to wear the original Cardin de Pierre Cardin as I’m sure it is what I wore to see the Rolling Stones in 1982 but it can no longer be found so I’m dabbing on a touch of vintage Opium and putting on my RS playlist as I pack for a weekend trip. I’d like to just take a travel spray and a couple of samples, will be in close proximity to a lot of people so I want something quiet, haven’t decided yet. Oh how I miss Nicolai Le Temps d’Une Fete! It would be perfect. Have a good weekend everyone 🙂

I’m very lucky to have found a bottle of Cardin de Cardin EdT in an antique store. I liked it so much I searched out a bottle of the parfum. I think it’s pretty affordable on eBay still, if that’s a place you’d be willing to go.

    Hi all!

I’m in Nu today. I found a bottle at a local perfume store that they’d presumably had since it launched. I remember when it was much thriftier to get it on discount but I still paid less than it would be on eBay. I also got a bottle of Tocade, which I’ve been wanting for awhile.

The store had some really cool stuff, but one thing was so rare I could barely control myself. However, I couldn’t buy it all that day, so I’ll talk about it when I actually buy it.

    Have a great one!

YOU GO pl67!!!!! Will you continue the same path in the fall and winter as well? If so you will definitely make a dent in your collection and further narrow down what you really want (or don’t want) in full bottles.

With the humidity essentially visible and into day 3 of a brutal heatwave, I’m thinking Cap Neroli EdT by PARFUMS DE NICOLAI is about all I can handle. Really a beautiful, fresh, authentic lemon-neroli with tenacity. Light/sheer. Hopefully will shield me from atmospheric destruction.

Oh, that makes me happy to hear. I have a bottle waiting at home for me that arrived just as I headed out of town. I wish I’d brought it with me. … I only did one spritz and liked it but didn’t really try it too much…

Right now I’m just wearing the romance of Samsara from last night – It’s lovely! I had forgotten it’s a sandalwood perfume – my first impressions last night were: powder – Rose – cloves – plastic

I’ve been recently tempted to purchase OJ Ta’If, Aedes de Venustas and Gallop – but I looked at my expenditures over the past year, I’ve decided I need to put myself on a no buy until I use up a more of what I have – i’m sure many of us have found ourselves in this boat – thus the weekly project!

Never smelled it, but I’m curious, if it’s on display at the mall I will try it next time – the last time I was at Macy’s I spelled Amarige for the first time and was very pleasantly surprised

It’s been reformulated thugh (what hasn’t?). The current version is nice enough but it misses the breathy depth and oakmoss. I’m loving it for the massive dose of ylang-ylang.

Amarige was the first ‘grown-up’ scent I purchased for myself in 1994 or thereabouts after sniffing the scent strip in a magazine. There was always *something* in it that was a bit off so it was ‘like’ not ‘love’.

Amarige is LOUD though. I came across a practically empty vintage mini in a junk shop and smeared whatever minuscule little was left on my wrist. The sillage is NUCLEAR.

    Good morning Y’all!

Wearing Clarins Eau Dynamisante….always perfect in summer.

I wanted to let y’all know about a perfume being developed that I think several of you might like! One of my favorite YouTube fragrance reviewers, Beauty Meow, is developing a passion project perfume, and will be working with 4160 Tuesdays’ Sarah McCartney! It’s going to be a dirty jasmine, citrus, and leather scent. Here’s the info if you want more info, and want to support. All profits go to charity, so this is a true passion project! 🙂

Another hot swampy day, testing out Orris Tattoo. Yesterday’s Noir Aphrodisiaque was very pleasant, hard to identify it specifically as chocolate, but a lovely sweet sruity floral: chocolate, jasmine, bergamot and I think cinnamon are the main notes I smelled.

Orris Tattoo has iris plus some wood/cardboard notes, very enjoyable in this moist heat.

Bruno Fazzolari Fontevraud today. I’m finding this stuff kind of addictive though I think Fall is its season with the overripe fruit, oak moss, and inkiness that seems to be his trademark. This could be Calyx Noire.

Weird phenomena, we’ve been getting sun showers all week. It’s unusual for my area. Most rainy days are endless drear.
Currently test Reve D’Ossian and Geisha Noire. Reve is a big fat no but I like the Geisha! It reminds me of Shalimar but lacks the gasoline opening of the EDP.

I love GN too but already own Shalimar so not sure I need this? It’s actually easier to wear.
I do not have your talent for describing scents so in very basic terms, it is a dry oriental but has some sort of scratchy note, like cumin, that was present from the opening and did not go away. I just can’t get past it. I’ll send you my sample next time I send you something.
I have not seen a rainbow in a long time. Although, I wish that I see one soon. (Rats! No rainbow emoji)

This past week has been so scary and hectic. My Dad went into hospital late Saturday. He heart was failing. He was in hospital from Saturday through Tuesday, draining fluid from around his heart. I’ve only come on here for a few seconds each day. It is always so nice to read about beautiful perfume. A perfect escape, if only for a few minutes here and there 🙂

My Dad is doing better and we have a follow up appointment today with cardiologist.

Doing another day of wearing a decant that had never been given a full wearing. Today it’s Eric Buterbaugh Apollo Hyacinth. It’s a really nice green dewy floral and is more interesting to me than the Rodin 3 I wore yesterday. Apollo Hyacinth reminds me of Jour d’Hermes in style and feel. Still not sure it will make the cut because I’m trying to be more discerning these days.

Also, I did some sampling last night and all three were duds for me. First, Berdoues Peng Lai smelled like a functional product, either laundry detergent or dryer sheet. That’s probably my least favorite type of perfume. Next, Iris Rebelle, which started off interesting and promising but within 15 minutes settled into something boring, nondescript and just basic petfumey smell. Finally, and this one kills me, Hermes Jardin de Monsieur Li. I thought it might work when I initially sprayed it, but then it got this screechy radiance and the crispness plus sweetness of the kumquat gave me a headache. I had only tried Monsiuer Li briefly at Nordstrom and it didn’t do anything for me then, but I wanted to retry it since I know quite a few of you enjoy it. Oh well, it’s almost a relief to not find more perfume to pine for.

Oh, I finally ordered the St. Clair sample set yesterday. I can’t wait for those to arrive!

I thought that Apollo Hyacinth was just okay too. I recently wore it on a hot day and completely changed my mind. I doubt that I’ll ever buy a FB but I am enjoying my decant more now.
      Thanks for the mini reviews!

Thanks for those reviews…lemming killed on the Berdoues!!! I will be curious as to your thoughts on the St Clair Scents…I love em, but YMMV…and I think it’s great that everyone’s honest personal opinions can talk many of us off the ledge with regard to blind purchases.

Gonna stay in the Use It Up lane today with Stella. Finishing a 30 ml bottle I’ve had kicking around a couple of years. Don’t want to bring it back with me.

There was no question of opening doors up last night. Didn’t cool down that much and, even worse, there was a fire at the foot of the nearby mountain that started yesterday afternoon. A few homes lost, many protected (and covered in red fire retardant from the planes…) It’s 60% contained now but temps are expected to hit 106 today. But it’s a dry heat! ????

Sad for those coming to see Yosemite and have been thwarted by its nearby fire. Sigh. Welcome to California.

Yes, the wildfires are so scary! Not sure if there are actually more of them in the recent past, if they’re more damaging to forest and human habitation, or if it’s just more news coverage…? Whatever the case may be, there is nothing more terrifying than an out of control fire. I don’t know how those wilderness firefighters do it…!

There are actually more. They are actually larger. And they are starting earlier in the year, and ending later. My husband is a volunteer fire captain with CalFire, which is staffing more people and more equipment than ever before. Welcome to the new normal…

I am old school in (newer) Mitsouko – I have a little vintage perfume oil of this but I forgot to put it on. This is one of my favorite perfumes. If I had to have just one, this one might be it. I got it as one of a five sample gift set, along with Jardin de Bagatelle, Shalimar, and two of the classic colognes. Without even noticing i was doing it, I used up the Mitsouko first, and then wondered what happened to it. And then missed it and got some more….

Yesterday I wore Carthusia Fiori de Capri EDT, but was so busy I had no time to come here. I always look forward to the little respite this site provides from the stresses of my work day.

It breaks my heart to say goodbye to this one since it was my first niche, my first “signature scent” AND I still love it but won’t replace it at the size/price. I will miss it, but it’s very silly to have the last few squirts just sitting there doing nothing.

Stuck in the mid-winter doldrums, that dangerous time of year when you find yourself standing in front of the bathroom mirror, a pair of nail scissors in your hand, thinking, ‘Man, I am so sick of growing out my hair I’m going to cut me a short, punky fringe and have some fun.’ The voice in your head goes, ‘Noooo, don’t do it. You’ve gone through 2 years of terrible growing out bowl cuts, you’re almost there. Remember last time, when you ended up looking like a ‘Dumb and Dumber’ stand-in.’

I live in hats! I started off with a shaved head – I decided to stop dying my hair so cut it all off – but now I’ve just entered the Hillary Mantel phase…ugh. Plus my hair colour is so bland…not grey, not blonde, but grlonde.

I’ve just started colouring mine these past two years… not to cover the grey, but to do fun colouring in. I almost chopped it short, and then thought… nah, play with it first until it rebels against being bleached and rainbowed. I wish I had the bone structure to rock a shaved head, though.

I started coloring mine when the dreary drabness of gray + “dirty blonde” got to me. Just highlights to perk it up. Makes a big difference, and is compatible with my extreme laziness when it comes to haircuts… if I get it done twice a year that’s a lot.

    Hello everyone!
It’s been awhile since I’ve posted but I’ve been lurking for most of the summer. Thanks so much for your lively informative and funny posts about perfume.
I just stumbled upon a new line of perfume at Luckyscent.com. It’s called Essential Parfums. Made from high quality, sustainable raw ingredients and each of the 5 perfumes on offer is a guest spot for a fine perfumer to do their stuff. The bottles are super affordable, kind of like a poor man’s Frederic Malle idea. 10ml is $20 and 100ml is $70. I ordered a 10ml of the one called The Musk by perfumer Calice Becker. Notes are ginger, beeswax, lavender, Australian sandalwood and musks.
SOTD: LDDM! Smells great in the high and dry Colorado rockies

Ahhh… home again!! Tired and jet-laggy but ever so glad to be home. I didn’t even mind (much) the young child sitting right behind me on the flight home whose apparent preferred mode of communication was a sudden eardrum-piercing shriek out of the blue. (Her parents did try, bless them, but “use your words” and “no screaming on the plane” did not seem to have any impact.)

Glad to be home, even if I did have to take over the pill-the-cat chore (cat is more cooperative with me than with DH. although ‘more’ is definitely a relative term here; cat still does not take kindly to the activity.)

I did manage to get a margarita while in Austin, but it was lousy. My boss has a real talent for picking mediocre restaurants. I got the local folks to overrule him for the final day’s lunch out, at least. One decent meal in 3 days.

And I’m down to one red skin splotch from the Eye Serum Sample Fiasco on Tuesday.

SOTD is Estee Lauder Sensuous Nude. Pretending I’m at the beach.

Chili Dog Day? Yum! I seem to end up wearing a bit of the really good ones that I have had, though. ????

Sunshine today for the first time in I don’t know how long! Both the cats and I are happy about this weather related development. I truly think that they are solar powered… ????????

SOTD = Versace Eros Pour Femme EdP, from the sample stash. It’s floral fruity shampoo. Into the “Give” pile it goes!

I’ll keep an eye out for the EdT, then. I’ve noticed that the perfume selection at the Ulta closest to me is a lot smaller than it used to be.

Oh, speaking of ULTA, right now you can take an extra 50 percent off clearance perfume and make up. My ULTA is small, but I got a blush for a dollar, and a some things for my daughter. I thought about picking up a clearenced Shalimar but didn’t.

I was just at Wegmans and the woman ahead of me bought 8 underarm deodorants. It sure looked like she was buying them to bring them home where it is hot as you know what almost year-round. So, while home is likely where they will end up, she bought them to use coupons. It looks like she ended up paying less than $1.50 for all 8!

SOTD is Shalimar Souffle Intense, thanks very kindly to the wonderful She-ra! Serious lemming now. Testing it vs Souffle on the other hand. Intense is a little deeper and has a little smokiness that brings it more back around to original Shalimar and doesn’t have the synthetic opening.

It is only about 70 degrees where I am today, so I pulled out the Terveer Incense and put some on. I’ll be back to my warm weather florals and citrus scents as it warms back up in the next few days.

    SOTD = Diptyque Volutes EDT

Copious amount as in 8 sprays. I have to say that the saturation made vanilla-amber more prominent. LOVE! My bottle is half-full so it will take a while to finish. I finished a bottle of shampoo yesterday, so there’s that

In other news, my < $14 Revlon hair dryer was a dud. It gets slightly warm at the highest setting. I will be returning iit this weekend but only if I find a suitable replacement. It is taking twice longer to dry my hair!

    Commuting Woes No. 442:
    – When there’s a train delay (which happens a lot), monitor posting and station announcements are non-existent or frequently unreliable. The conductors of trains on the platform could announce or shout out the destinations but because they don’t like crowded trains, they keep silent, causing people who could have taken that train to remain on the platform. Ugh!

That’s a horrible woe! So, they are getting paid to make other peoples lives more frustrating, as long as they aren’t inconvenienced? Shame on them.

You nailed it, lillyjo. On the flip side, WE pay to get a SPOT, not a SEAT but not telling us which train it is deprives us of a SPOT.

NJT (and for once, autocorrect to “Nut” was correct). MTA wouldn’t normally mix local / express and destination although it could stop short of where you want to go. At Newark, different NJT lines with trains that look the same use the same set of platforms. Some trains have signage displaying the destination, some give a train number only and some don’t even use the signage.

And I also meant to add that local and express trains use the same set of tracks and accidentally ending up on a train that doesn’t go to your stop is a HUGE inconvenience.

I got a Jinri hair dryer from Amazon for like $40 and it’s so much better than the Conairs I’ve had. And much quieter with faster drying time.

Wearing several sprays of Terracotta tonight. Tomorrow I am getting my hair highlighted with some added lowlights (to cover the grey).

Stay cool everyon, it’s stinking hot here.
