Happy Friday the 13th, happy birthday to Harrison Ford and Patrick Stewart, and happy Aquatic Friday! Our community project for today: wear an aquatic fragrance, or something meant to evoke the sea.
What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.
My pick, although I won't put it on until later today: 4160Tuesday What I Did On My Holidays.
Reminder: on 7/20 we're having a Cocktail Party...tell us about your favorite cocktail (alcoholic or non-alcoholic), provide a recipe if you like, and wear a perfume that would complement your choice. It doesn't have to be a boozy fragrance!
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Acqua di Sale Profumum Roma
I was just dreading Friday the 13th, then I came here and something good happened! You smell wonderful!????
Italians think Friday the 13th is a lucky day. I was born on the 13th of August but it was on a Monday instead of a Friday. I probably would have been luckier had I been born on a Friday.
???? ☕️????????♂️
You smell wonderful! Happy Friday.
Hi Bear! I need to try that one, it sounds quite nice!
Twins!
WHERE IS THE COFFEE
AND THE ???????????????????????????????????????????
Hi Bear! ☕️☕️☕️
I ♥️ ????
Hello ????!
Fo’ah again
Happy Friday
Happy Friday to you Lovestosmellgood!
I stole someone’s idea today and am wearing Wood sage and sea salt. I layered it with BBW At the Beach body lotion. Beaches aren’t really for me, I prefer rivers and streams. Hope everyone has a great day!
That sounds like a great layering combo! Is this lotion still in production? I will look the next time I’m at the mall.
I saw it the last time I was there…I think it also comes in a body cream and body scrub too.
It was in the summer line up this year. It is a good combo. My daughter uses the body spray.
A beach on a river is still a beach, no? A good swimming hole in a river is about as good as it gets IMO.
True, just more dirt and grass, than sand. At least where I’ve been.
My beaches don’t require sand 😀 Just water.⛱
You smell good! Happy Friday!
Thank you!
Twins!
Robin, sounds like a perfect choice for both the community project and your vacation!
I did some crazy layering:
Heeley Sel Marin
Jo Malone Wood Sage & Sea Salt
a dab of Molinard Vanille Marine
So much fun!
Partial twin – I’m wearing Sel Marin today. I wasn’t nearly as creative as you. I bet you smell fabulous.
Thank you! I just did not want to choose between the three. 🙂
I would love to smell that combination!
It worked pretty well. Lots of sea air smell. I was afraid that Wood Sage & Sea Sale would disappear immediately, but it performed better than average Malone and blended well with Sel Marin. Molinard kept quiet, which was another surprise. I enjoyed this combination.
Ooh, I’m curious about that Molinard! Can you give a brief description?
Mostly sea air and caramel, but it is more complex than that. Sea notes are quite realistic (think seaweed, iodine) but tend to disappear soon, though saltiness remains. Caramel note is very noticeable, but sometimes it becomes more mature – sort of vanilla/amber/benzoin accord. Overall, it is a sweet and salty aquatic but with some traits of oriental gourmand. I like it.
A trifecta, nice!!
Thank you!
I’m wearing Sel Marin today. The last time I tried it I wasn’t moved, so I gave the sample to my husband. Today I’m loving it, and I may just steal the sample back.
I am at home again after our German adventure. I don’t know how long it will take for our cat to leave my side – she was extremely happy to see us. I don’t think I can take her to yoga with me, so she’ll have to get off my lap in the not-too-distant future.
Have a happy Friday!
Sel Marin really grew on me – there is something about its uncomfortable salty edge that makes you want to keep smelling it.
I recall it smelling a little swampy. But maybe I’m thinking of another saltwater-referenced scent – the Miller Harris?
Whenever we come back from any trip, my cat also tries to catch up on his lap time 🙂
Good to hear that your cat is not upset that you went on a trip. Some of my cats in the past have been rather standoffish after “their” humans went on a trip.
TGIF, even if it is the 13th.
Fueguia La Cautiva. Berries and cream and musk. Yum.
That does sound yum!
Hello! I am wearing Roudnitska’s Ocean Rain, which I love in part for the hilarious contrast on Basenotes of glowing reviews (“Roudnitska’s swan song is every bit a masterpiece as anything else he ever made”) and terrible ones (“It smells somewhere between BO and a Toxic waste plant. Ocean Rain? Maybe in 500 years when we have completely destroyed the planet will Ocean Rain smell like this.”) To me it’s a weird but calm and wearable herbal thing, like if you took the melon and flowers out of Diorella and replaced them with kitchen herbs and pine resin. While I don’t really think it smells like rain near the ocean, I do think it conjurs that smell mood in a more abstract, associative way.
“Somewhere between BO and a Toxic waste plant” is excellent. I have never smelled it!
Those are hilarious descriptions.
Happy Friday! I need the weekend bad!
I’m in Agua de Colonia Concentrada…because it has Agua in the name. That’s the best I could do with the CP this week 😀
The opening of AdCC smells exactly like lemon drop candies. It’s one of my favorite cheap thrills.
Ooh, lemon drops! But where does it go from there?
It fades pretty quick from there, but before it goes it turns into something like a lemon herbal tea.
Oh, that doesn’t sound so bad either! Tocca Bianca always reminded me of lemon drops – both the tart interior and the sugar coating.
cologne + cheap thrill = irresistible
Sounds yummy, you smell great! I’m resisting for the moment, but you may get an enabler pin for this one.
I’m wearing a very watery (although not strictly speaking aquatic in the calone way) scent in Un jardin après la mousson, which autocorrect keeps wanting to change into garden and mutton. Anyway, it’s my favourite Jardin and my favourite green melon, for overripe melon I prefer Emotionnelle.
I started the day in MDCI Une nuit andalouse, which is kind of nice but rather undetermined and nowhere near the best of what MDCI has to offer.
Hope you are having a great holiday!
When we get to Garden Mutton we’ll know we’ve truly entered the avant garde age of perfumery
LOL this just about made me shoot iced tea from my nose. bahahaha!
+1!???????? ???????????????????????????? (in honor of Bear)
Nice.
I think Heroic Lamb would make a nice flanker 🙂
Y’all are cracking me up with this!
🙂
Hahaha Garden Mutton is the avantgarde version of Mary’s little lamb. I love that perfume, it’s my favorite Jardin too – but it doesn’t seem to be as popular with anyone else I know.
My second favorite “wet garden” smell is Annick Goutal Un Matin D’Orage but it is less herbal so it’s not quite as fresh .
Love Matin d’Orage as well.
Your autocorrect wins today!
Aquatic scents are my least favourite category: the only thing I own is Hermes Epice Marine and I really have to be in the mood for that one. Today is not the day, so I’m wearing Odori Tabacco. No reason.
Might be my least favorite too.
Epice Marine IS a mood.
Was curious so looked up the notes on your Odori Tabacco. Very interesting! I don’t smoke or drink, but I sometimes enjoy the smells of both. Hope a few good tobacco notes will creep in with the booze in next week’s project.
Wearing Annick Goutal Vetiver (1985), a salty vetiver that smells of ocean spray. I regret not buying it before it was discontinued. My decant is getting dangerously low. There’s a newer cologne version that I’ve never tried. If you’ve smelled it, please weigh in!
I’m also curious about the newer version.
I have the cologne, it’s very nice but like most colognes is fairly light. Still nicely salty though and one of my favorite beach vacation scents.
If I remember correctly Bois de Jasmin has a review of the cologne that includes a comparison to the original.
She does, she gives it 5 stars! Here is a link to the review of the original and one of the cologne.
https://boisdejasmin.com/2006/02/annick-goutal-vetiver-perfume-review.html
https://boisdejasmin.com/2013/04/annick-goutal-eau-dhadrien-neroli-and-vetiver-colognes-fragrance-reviews.html
Thanks for the links austenfan! It sounds like I’d like the cologne but I should not expect it to be a substitute for the original.
Thanks for your comment! It’s the salt along with the vetiver that wows me. Sounds like the cologne would please me.
I tried whatever version Nordstrom had on their shelves a couple of years ago. I wasn’t crazy about it. My recollection is that it smelled like seaweed, but according to my notes it got sweet and floral. At the time I wrote, “very odd progression.”
I’ll add the caveat that marine frags are not my fave, and I find vetiver challenging, so feel free to ignore my input here 😉
Hahaha. Thanks for the full disclosure!
Melograno
https://www.saatchiart.com/art/Painting-Pomegranate-sailboats-and-seagulls-at-the-sea/300119/2623352/view
Yay!
😉 Looks like you are still going strong as well!!!
I did spray some Biarritz behind my knees
Sounds naughty 😉
eXtra applications of other fragrances are quite alright 😉
Well they are old knees, but they work!
I quite like Biarritz and Deauville. I would replace them next summer.
CM8, what does it make you choose a specific bottle? Do you take the ones you like less, or the ones that you use less? or any other concept? I am trying to figure out how to keep finishing things.
That’s an interesting question pl67! Last night I made a list of all the bottles that I consider “done” (either through usage or confiscation) and there does not seem to be a pattern that I can see….I made a decision that I wasn’t going to hoard any more fragrances so I am just kinda going with the flow…I picked Melograno because I was completely unfamiliar with it (I received it as a gift …partially used vintage bottle) and it was love at first sniff. I thought it would make a great non citrus summer scent and I wanted to wear it on a daily basis to really get to know it. Right now I think I can officially consider it “done” because my son took the remains of the splash decant I made of it…I think there is something like maybe 8 -10 ml left of it. Not sure what I will move on to next….I thought perhaps Montale’s Soleil di Capri because the bottle feels nearly empty (but I can’t see the juice) so it would probably be done in a few days. I also brought up two of the Berdoues that were in the basement….each about 1/3 full….my goal is twofold….stop hoarding and use the juice lovingly and lavishly until I get down to maybe 4-5 bottles….after that, not sure….
Interesting! After I finished all summer decants next week, I will jump to the samples, finish what is left and then focus on bottles than do not have much juice on them. I will probably use the same pattern for all the seasons.
Before you know it your collection will be down a good size….I don’t like having partial samples lying around the house and I tend to use up the decants one at a time (with a few exceptions like Tempo which I am saving to wear in the cooler weather but will then finish). I think for me I would rather have a few bottles that I truly truly love and very few samples or decants lying all over the place. At least this is where I am at in this moment 😉
you can count on me to support you in the use it up campaign and also to talk you out of buying new stuff if you want me too 🙂
that would be “that are NOT lying all over the place” !!
I am more that happy that you give me your support in “the use it up campaign and also to talk me out of buying new stuff”. I need to get serious and responsible about my collection. There are many wasted perfumes that are waiting for me to give all the love they deserve. 🙂
You will be on my mind tomorrow if I end up in Saks tomorrow…. whispering in my ear… don’t buy it!!!????????
HI Wildflower’s West Indies. https://www.arielleshoshana.com/collections/hi-wildflower/products/west-indies
How is it?
Very pretty, very pleasant, not enough lasting power though.
Thanks. Have not yet tried this line.
Happy Friday! My SOTD is Roxana Illuminated’s GreenWitch. 🙂
I don’t know that one but since we seem to see eye to eye on so many other fragrances I will say that you smell great 😉
Chocolatemarzipan8, the Non Blonde has a glorious review of it. It wears close to the skin but has excellent staying power. I would call it a bitter green chypre (I detect real oakmoss) with salty notes and driftwood.
It really smells like the beach in N. California to me. There’s a trail along the Sea Cliff/Land’s End neighborhood in San Francisco that smells precisely like it.
Nice!!!! I bet that real oakmoss smells divine…have you ever smelled real oakmoss? I bought some from Eden Botanicals many years ago and it really was a perfume unto itself…problem is it was incredibly sticky and stained the skin.
I smelled the real thing at an open house Mandy Aftel hosted in Berkeley a few years back.
The oak moss and her ambergris tincture made me swoon. 🙂
Taking a break today from the “Use it Up” project to participate in the CP.
Wearing Profumum Roma Acqua di Sale, which I love and I am taking advantage that my boss finally stopped wearing it. In fact she has not worn any perfumes in a long time. What a relief!
Busy, crazy Friday here at work and looking forward to a quiet weekend. Be well all!
Ha!!! I am glad that you can enjoy that one again 🙂
My weekend might not be so quiet…the mini marzipans are making a third and final pilgrimage to Koreatown before the two eldest head to college next month. I ‘might’ tag along on the train ride into the city but then go my own separate way (who wants to hang out with their middle aged mom? LOL)…..I am debating between taking a long walk up to my old childhood haunt , Lincoln Center, where I performed as a child or to visit the new SAKS second floor beauty and finally sample so many of the fragrances everyone has been talking about…..I am a bit scared of the temptations that await, though…. 😉
I am so glad you and the mini marzipans are going to be in town again. At least it is not going to be too hot. Enjoy the food! I would suggest go to SACKS. It is a new 2nd floor and worth the visit. The time I went there I was very determined that I was not going to buy anything and I stick to it. I really had a nice time without the pressure of wanting something.
Thanks for the advice 🙂 I will be on my own from the time we get off of the Metro North train and will have four hours to kill…I think I will do SAKS and just sample and enjoy…I am hoping that everything I sample will be a “nice but I don’t need it” for me !
“You will NOT need it”. ????
THANK you!!!! I am going to remember those words …I DON’T need it!!!
“These aren’t the perfumes you are looking for!” Use the Jedi mind trick!
Don’t forget to bring you Chanel bag ????
Oh, wow! What kind of performances did you do at Lincoln Center? I recently watched an episode of Great Performances about the process of building the facility in the 50s. One of the people interviewed had been a child performer at the old theater, and was still performing there. Maybe he’s someone you worked with!
I performed with American Ballet Theatre and also with London Festival Ballet (for those of you old enough to remember I met Nureyev and he was kind enough to pose for a picture with me…he was so kind and gracious…now Barishnikov on the other hand…..) as a young ballet dancer and I sang opera with the Metropolitan Opera and the NYC Opera as a child. I will tell you that the experiences were surreal…you could not even imagine the size of those stages!!!!
Wow, what a childhood you had!
It was interesting but also not as glamourous as one might think….lots of hard work, sacrificing and a bit of a loss of childhood….nonetheless, a very unique set of experiences that have shaped me into who I am today 🙂
What wonderful experiences, chocolate! I never saw Nureyev dance in person, but saw Barishnikov several times. He was sublime.
CM8; that’s wonderful!
My sister and I saw Nureyev dance Giselle one year on my birthday.
Lincoln Center despite all the drama, still is a magical place.
My mom went to high school with Gerald Arpino, he introduced us to the Jofrrey dancers.
Oh! Have fun! 🙂
thanks!!!
Friyay!
Volutes day 12.
YOU go!!!!!!!
You smell devine!
I was going to wear Wood Sage & Sea Salt layered over Marni Rose, but couldn’t find my little decant of the Marni. So I’m in Lostmarc’h Iroaz, which does pretty much the same thing – for me they both evoke grassy dunes and beach roses.
QAlmost twins as I wore WS&SS
I don’t know where that Q came from!
🙂
EdM Bleue for aquatic Friday. It is drizzly this morning, but hopefully it will clear for an afternoon at the beach. Rain before 7, done by 11 as my dad says.????
So, I am at my parents house and yesterday I spotted a perfume mini inside the bathroom medicine cabinet on the level of the house I stay in. I asked my mom where it came from and she said she thought it was mine. It is now, lol. I thought it was Noa and dabbed some on at bedtime. Definitely not Noa, so I did some internet searching and it is Lancome Attraction. Very similar bottle, but I haven’t even heard of this perfume!? Have any of you ever worn it?
I smelled that at Sephora and liked it. I’m going to ask for a sample next time 🙂
I have a bottle of Attraction! Not by conscious effort, though – I received it in some sort of “give away your least used bottle” event that I believe we did here on NST quite some time ago……
Hello, scent twin!
I will spray myself silly with Fleurs de Sel, as soon as I muster up the energy to take a shower. Had a exceptionally crazy evening at work last night, and I am still recovering. My broken finger is hurting and I’m hoping last night didn’t re-injure it in some way.
Oh no! Hope it mends itself back up!
Uh oh! Hope that your finger is OK!
Maybe it’s the weather? I have an ankle that has a dull ache several days before it rains.
Aether Carboneum which smelle exactly as promised : a wet isoprene suit with a hint of lemon. Makes me think of a Thailand vacation , even if I really can’t scuba dive, it scares the life of me.
I read this as another conundrum, LOL. Speed reading on my break, oops ????
Lolita Lempicka Fleur de Corail for me today. Love that driftwood accord. Happy Friday!
That one had a really gorgeous bottle, didn’t it?
Pulled out L’Occitane’s Verdon for Aquatic Friday. This was an impulse buy a few years back, after someone told me it was a good pine-y scent. It’s more like Cool Water with extra lemon and rosemary, but still nice on a hot day.
I never did try that one…I do like pine but not Cool Water.
I was rooting around in my “some day I have to give these bottles away” box to try and locate the Lancome Attraction madtowngirl referenced above, and I found a mini of Jean Patou Sublime. As happens quite a bit when I’m rummaging through a perfume stash, I dabbled (I tend to forget what stuff smells like if I haven’t worn it in a while). It’s definitely got that chypre thing going, and is quite potent.
I’ll try to participate in the CP post-shower. Happy Friday, everybody!
Sublime is sublime….that was another bottle I finished about a month ago…
I adore Sublime, lost my bottle to an unfortunate accident on the bathroom floor ~ I actually shed a few tears and a few cuss words over that one.
My bathroom smelled lovely for a few days though. 🙂
Ooh, a quite-potent chypre. [Adds to list]
Regina, the Sublime mini is in my “give away someday” box. Do you want me to mail it to you? Vintage-y chypre powder bombs are not for me. If you’d like to have it, send me an email – lisadarty in the land of haute mayle.
God I love NST. Check your email!
Lush Orange Blossom. The dark well is EMPTY.
Well…layered with Like This. The last bit was 6/7 sprays, that’s not enough right??Right. So I layered with Like This.Orange Blossom spiced pumpkin soup.Counts as aquatic!Lol.Plus Orange Blossom has a salty note, which reminds me of a certain tequila brand I used to drink wayyyyy too much of.Haha!
Happy Friday!!!
X
empty!!!!!!! Hooray! I know you have had that Lush for a while 😉
Since 2010!!????????♂️????????♂️????????
Great! ????????????. I just realized that I do not know how many decants I have finished so far since I started the Use It Up project. I think I have to go back to previous post to get a count.
Yeah,I have a stash of samples to work through myself.Luckily they’re easier to use up.
Just dump the whole sample on you, my friend. Let’s finish the most we can! ????
That bottle had been in your stash for quite a long time, if I recall correctly. ????
Yup…I started wearing it as my go-to Orange Blossom, then I discovered Uncle Serge Fleurs d’Orangers…on my second bottle already!
Congrats. Just yesterday, I found my Orange Blossom travel spray so now you’ve passed the torch to me. See you in a few years!
Haha!Understood.Very,very clearly.It took me about 8 years on 30ml….Lol!!
Wearing a few drops of Dune from my cute mini bottle.
Good choice! I have a mini of Dune too. I estimate it’s ~20 years old.
Dang it! I forgot about Dune! It’s so awesome, it’s in my hoarding hideaway.
You smell wonderful!
Nice pick!
I’m in Estee Lauder Sensuous Nude. The opening is a bit challenging for me (I have kind of a hard time with “beach” notes) but I love the drydown. It smells like sun-warmed skin after a day at the beach.
Today has already been far more productive than yesterday, which I spent glued to the tv watching that congressional hearing. Sheesh. Now I’ve got a slew of phone calls to make that I’ve been putting off (does everyone hate making phone calls or is it just me?)
At least one will be fun – I’ll be calling the Cleveland Orchestra for our subscription. Interestingly, they’re doing 2 performances we recently saw that I’m thrilled to be able to see again. One is John Adams conducting his piece, Scheherazade 2. The other is Kirill Gerstein playing Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No 3. We saw him play it last year and when it was over, I turned to my husband and said, “Why did we only get tickets to one performance of this? I want to go all 3 nights in a row.” Now we can! 😀
I haaaaate making phone calls. My husband’s total willingness to make them for me makes me weepy with gratitude. And hooray for the Cleveland Orchestra!
Hooray for good husbands!
Totally hate making phone calls. I’d rather go to the dentist.
Post shower, and I am trying to participate in the CP with Voyage d’Hermes. I figure any voyage (and I’m saying that with a French accent) worth the name involves crossing a large body of water.
So I got Voyage when it first came out and went through half a bottle, then I lost interest and sold it way back when I didn’t know perfume swapping was a thing.
I now have the parfum which I have not worn in forever!
I like the EdT – how does the parfum compare?
I was testing out some samples today – one was By Kilian, though I couldn’t read the name (I didn’t have my glasses on). Whatever it was, it smelled great on me. I later found my glasses, and checked the label. It was Woman in Gold. So, you were right – although Gold Knight was my first choice of the two, I have come around to the second!
OH yay on Woman in Gold!
The Parfum of voyage is spicier and definitely more intense.
I emptied a bottle! Of course I’ve had it since the ’90s and never wear it, but it is the first full bottle I’ve ever emptied. I’m wearing L’Eau d”Issey.
Yay for a bottle emptied! Congrats! ????
I’ve went through at least 3 bottles of that stuff in the nineties. I gave my last bottle to a friend, as I really didn’t enjoy it anymore but still, it brings back memories.
I definitely had a bottle of that too! It is not for me anymore, but there certainly is no mistaking it.
Welcome to the club!
Empty bottle? w00t w00t!
Nice!!Welcometo the club!
I am in Sex and the Sea by Francesca Bianchi.
A very sexy scent on my skin.
That sounds so good!
Making a late start to the morning so will decide on what to wear after I am dressed.
Reporting back from the trip to Zonda Nellis: GOOD GRIEF – they had a sign up saying “call to make an appointment”! And this was despite posting their hours just like a regular-joe shop. Are they just a little up themselves and la-di-dah? These are after all the people who for years had “As seen on Dynasty” sign in the window. At least there were many other places to visit on Granville Street.
“As seen on Dynasty” LOLOLOL
Caron Bellodgia, which was inspired by a small town in Italy overlooking Lake Como.
Ah, nice!
And apparently George Clooney has a house there 😉
I’m wearing the only properly aquatic scent I own: Pierre Guillaume Entre Ciel et Mer. Not calone; salty/light/mineral-y. I will admit this isn’t the greatest perfume in my collection.
I’ve got one grinding meeting to get thru today and then… TGIF! Man, this has been a long week.
Hope the weekend makes up for it!
Happy Friday!
Here in Arrakis water is precious!
Am wearing Lavinila’s Water deo + Florida Water. It will be 97F FOR THE WEEKEND, and I think refreshment is called for! This duos is perfect for that!
The Lavanila deos are my favorite out of the many (MANY) natural/non-antiperspirant deodorant brands I’ve tried.
Have any other deodorant recommendations for this especially hot summer??
I am really impressed with the Lavinila deos and they are surprising effective. TMI time: I glide it not only under the arms, but also down the thighs so I don’t have any thigh rub.
Schmidts Deo is very nice, but I find that you will need to re- apply.
Only second time posting, but wanted to share my new found love for Kenzo Acqua and participate in this community project!
I picked this up on a whim in the duty free; to me, it smell exactly like salted pineapple. It’s a very happy, summery scent, although rather linear. I have been enjoying wearing it on hot days.
Glad you found a new love!
Thanks Kelley! I rarely buy on a whim and glad that I have no regrets so far
Welcome Yasmina! Someone (Cody?) recently remarked that pineapple notes seem to be very popular lately!
Hello Yasmina!
Salted pineapple sounds really good!
Forgive me, Donnatella for I have sinned. I had found an unopened bottle of vintage Jicky and got it for $100. It might be late 80’s or early 90’s but hey that’s vintage. Wearing Diorling today.
Vintage indeed! Congrats
Nice Find! I’m sure Donatella will grant her forgiveness. 🙂
I think you get a discount for vintage because you saved it from a worse fate.
Rescuing a vintage perfume from Purgatory? That ought to get a thumbs up!
Trying out Myrrhe Egilantine hermessence this morning. Not on theme but had to try it. Stopped by Hermes to see my favorite SA and had a wonderful time though I can’t afford 99% of what is in the store. Besides getting a hug and buying some shower gel, he sent me off with samples of the Myrrhe and Cedre Sambac, Eau de Citron Noir, a cute little Eau des Merveilles mini/pendant, lotion and a smile on my face. If shopping was always such a delight, I’d need a second job!
Dang, you got hooked UP. Wouldn’t it be nice if Hermes sold those lovely little 15ml bottles on their own, and not just in coffrets?
I’d love to hear your thoughts on the ME.
The ME is nice, though not quite ringing my bells. It reminds me a bit of Rose ikebana in being a fruity bright & watery rose, but without the tartness of RI.
Have no fear, I will likely do coffret splits…probably up to 4 sets or more if there’s enough interest.
I will be watching for it H!!
A Cedre Sambac sample awaits me at home!
Today at the duty free shop in LAX i sampled some Bronze Goddess- seems to fit the theme . It is light & lovely and would have made a great layering combo with the body creme I purchased…… thinking now that I should have purchased it before boarding!! I am in the dry down phase and it is like suntanning on a beach towel! ( @ 32K feet!!)
I take it you’re heading back east? I was appalled at the very chemical smell I got from BG that I never gave it another chance!
An SA in Hermes HUGS? It’s true they’re pretty nice, but something tells me you’re their favourite!
What do you think of ME?
Wow, you done good!
Great SA at your Hermes shop!!
SOTD for the CP is Au Lac by Eau d’Italie, which I found after a serious search through two sample boxes. I can’t say I love it, but I don’t hate it either. I read up on the love story that supposedly inspired it and must say, this somewhat wimpy watery scent doesn’t pack the romantic wallop that it should! –Between romantic floral and Futurist avant-garde. Huh? Where’s the Futurism here? I’m another person who’s not really on board with aquatic scents, I’m afraid.
It often feels there’s more time spent on the backstory and presentation as opposed to creating the perfiume itself. I am now madly curious as to what notes might make a perfume futuristic. Anyone have candidates?
The cold iris in ISM. Also, pretty much anything by Nomenclature seem futuristic.
Certain metallic notes and eucalyptus. And whatever makes Gucci Rush smell like stereo components.
If I was in the aquatic mood I would have picked eau des merveilles bleue, epice marine, aqua di sale, sel marin, or wood sage & sea salt. alas, I’ve been off the aquatic fragrances for a while now. I’m wearing Gucci Rush. Happy Friday!
I am only rarely in an aquatic mood myself.
Wearing Antonia’s Flowers Sogni del Mare – easily the only perfume (sample, not even a decant!) in my collection that fits today’s CP. Actually, I wouldn’t mind wearing this perfume but unfortunately two samples I got from the brand directly smell completely different (much better) than what I tried at Barneys, so I’m hesitant to buy it at either place.
I must say the Barneys perfume display is not befitting of the Barneys brand and what it evokes. If I somehow meetup with the cousin whose client is Barneys for several brands (including Arquiste, we have to talk shop.
Not really into aquatics as a category so I’m wearing Atlantic Ambergris from Areej Le Dore. It references a whale waste product and an ocean and smells good on me so good enough for the project.
That whole line is surprisingly good
I’ve been MIA here for a few days because I had a friend visiting. And what a goof, I didn’t take Friday off work like I should have! I came in on Monday and now today. My friend left late last night. I’m so sleepy and not ready to work much yet.
While my friend visited I wore Calvin Klein Reveal (thanks madtowngirl!), Hermes Neroli Dore, and Tom Ford Soleil Blanc.
My chosen scent to evoke the sea is Oriza L. Legrand Villa Lympia. I quite enjoy it and its seaweed, driftwood, and salt notes. I wore it the whole weekend we spent on a nearby island last spring, and it fit well. Jessica reviewed it on NST too. I’m happy to have bought a decant in a split but probably won’t replace it when it’s gone.
Which small island?
Oh, just Vashon. We had a great time in the center of town and walked to Dragon’s Head Cider for a tasting.
Nice!
I decided to go with Zoologist Dragonfly for the aquatic theme today. I don’t like it, though. Whatever the aquatic component is, it kind of takes over and make the whole thing a bit Febreeze-ish.
Yick on the Febreeze!
Happy Friday everyone! I just put on some Missoni Acqua and feeling very ’90s. It reminds me of Byblos. I had a lot of aquatics in the ’90s – CK Escape, New West, Byblos, Sunflowers (least appropriate name ever), all the B&BW aquatic ones (juniper something and other one I can’t remember). Anyway, nice trip down memory lane and I’m already kinda tired of it.
ha, I give a big yes to your comment on Sunflowers. My mum loves the sunflowers in her garden. Years ago my father bought her a bottle of Sunflowers perfume. We were all perplexed at the smell of citrus, roses, woods, and other things in that scent.
OMG!!! I had Byblos and New West as well and wore them until they were drained…yes, fond memories of the 90s.
Missoni Acqua was my summertime perfume for many years. In the early/mid 2000s, though. I guess I was late to the party 😉
Missoni Acqua was launched in 2007 according to Fragrantica, so you aren’t late! The fragrances it reminds me of were definitely 90s though – Byblos was launched in 1990.
Oh, that makes sense – I was thinking it was more mid-2000s so apparently I started wearing it right when it came out. It seems I was more on top of new releases pre-rabbit hole than I am now, HA!
SEASPRAY! That was the B&BW aquatic one I couldn’t think of. Been wracking my brain all morning and googling (ocean? waves? spray?) and finally remembered. I loved that one.
SotM = Terracotta, day 5
SotA = Eau des Merveilles
SotE = L’eau de L’Artisan
St. Monans Pier, wow, I would love to walk there someday.
Still enjoying Terracotta. The top notes are dazzling. It evokes a delicious tropical scene, water sparkles in the distance.
Couldn’t resist EdM today. It makes me think of a long, quiet walk along the seashore.
L’eau de L’Artisan, a cologne with a hint of saltwater to refresh at the end of a long day.
Hope your Friday is fragrantly fabulous, NSTers.
YOu go girl!!!!! Loving that you haven’t grown tired of Terracotta yet!
Terracotta-love is still strong, though I think I’m growing anosmic to it. So I just spritz more often, it’s a win-win!
Oh, I really should have worn L’Eau de L’Artisan this week!!
SOTD = Jo Malone Wood Sage & Sea Salt
I’m on theme today! WS&SS is linear but very good!
Clients rule, enough to derail a very significant project, which, at the proverbial end of the day, stood no chance given the significance of the client. I was hoping to be done with my portion of this project and now it will drag on.
Commuting Woes No. 440
– why anyone would deliberately lean on my hand (that is holding on to a train pole) is beyond me – it was not even that crowded! I am looking for some type of ring or brass knuckle-like jewelry that will make it painful for people to lean against my hand (with any part of their body) with the only caveat being that it can’t look like a weapon. Any suggestions?
I’ve got lots of rings like that in my collection. Be warned, though, that the pressure from the ring will also be painful to you!
I was thinking a ring with a 3D skull. Something cheap but sturdy and just enough “pop” to dig into the other person’s body without hurting them.
I ordered this which may do the trick as well.
https://m.shop.nordstrom.com/s/dean-davidson-bamboo-style-labradorite-ring/4934581
Report back 😉
Will do!
That will work just fine & is quite stylish as well!
Ha! I will be sure to test it out as soon as I get it.
Oh, i like the ring!
Yay…and the ring is now sold out. I got it just in time!
You smell great! WS&SS is one of JM’s very best.
LOL, you need commuting gauntlets. Have a look:
https://www.etsy.com/listing/99497084/leather-armor-dragon-scale-gauntlets?ref=shop_home_active_6
Too funny. Lillyjo uses perfume to ward off nasty co-workers and I use gauntlets to create a wide berth between me and fellow commuters.
The gauntlets are definitely scarier!
Is just asking politely but firm: “Could you please NOT lean on me?” out of questions? (I’m completely foreign to public transportation in any country for the last couple of decades but it used to work in my “past life”).
Unfortunately yes. There have been a couple of news stories recently about people misbehaving on public transit, that, when confronted, ended up causing people harm.
Out of the question…many have their earbuds on so they can’t hear…some ask why? Others simply refuse and pretend to adjust themselves so they continue to “accidentally” crush ones fingers.
Wearing LADDM this morning, and feeling very smug because my pet idea looks like it might be solving a problem on a project that’s been going on for longer than I’ve been at the company! I’m so thrilled I pushed this idea so hard (seriously, I brought it up like six times before my manager said, “Fine, let’s try it out,” likely as much to shut me up as out of genuine enthusiasm).
The boyfriend and I are making canneles! I haven’t found a satisfactory one in California so far, so a close friend gave me four gorgeous copper cannele molds for my birthday last year. Since my new birthday is just weeks away, I thought it high time to actually use those molds. We made vanilla-steeped milk on Wednesday and the most fabulous-smelling strained batter yesterday. Scraping those vanilla beans filled the kitchen with the most glorious boozy vanilla smells! The canneles may end in disaster, or they may be fabulous! I’ll let you know next week (the batter needs to rest for 48 h).
Good for you with pushing the envelope on your idea.
My mouth is already watering with your cannele description!
Thanks! I feel great about finally having the confidence in my job to push things 🙂
I feel much less confident about the canneles than I do at my job, though. We’ll see! (How bad could a sugar-butter-egg-vanilla-milk mixture taste, right?)
I’m too lazy to make canneles–I bought mine at Trader Joe’s. Not bad, but I’m guessing not as good as yours will be.
Goodness, I should hope so, given how work-intensive they are! I’ll look for canneles at TJ’s, though–are they frozen? Are you meant to bake them?
Do you need any guinea pigs? 😉
You smelled great!
Undina, you don’t know how many seconds I spent wondering what about my post might’ve suggested to you that I needed more pets. Haha, I’m very slow on Friday afternoons, I guess 🙂
I don’t know that these canneles will be fit to be shared with anyone who isn’t us! Mostly I’m just hoping to learn how to be better from this process!
🙂
I got nuthin’ for the CP. Nuthin’. Only samples here, and none are the least bit aquatic. I saw the sample of Tauer Cologne du Maghreb and thought….maybe opposite? Isn’t the Maghreb a desert? Well, no. The region does include coast of Mediterranean, so well…there we are.
It’ll only last a short while anyway… I sprayed it on my shirt to keep it going…. just a sharp, herbal citrus.
Points for trying, maybe?
I’m with LizzieB today… I got nuthin’ for Aquatic/Ocean Day. I once had a sample of Matin d’Orage that I liked, but I used it up. I do still have a sample of DSH Beach Roses, but that’s only faintly salty anyway.
So I’m testing PdE Le Cri de la Lumiere today. Which is nice. I was expecting the “rose iris” described in the newest P:TG, but I was surprised. A liqueur-like rose, a bit of powdery musk (no, it’s pleasant, fear not the laundromat), some iris, and a metric ton of patchouli. Maybe a tad of oud (or fake oud, not sure I can tell the difference, but there’s that hint of band-aid stuff so I think some type of oud material). Reminds me a little bit of MFK Lumiere Noire pf with iris in place of narcissus, so I’d probably wear this if I had some.
I’m still *sensitive* to patchouli, so I tend to notice it more than other people seem to, but as it turns out, I like it paired with rose.
I liked Matin d’Orage too despite the sneaky aquatic note. This is not my favourite type of perfume either, and in fact the adjective “calonic” will make me put the bottle down even before spritzing. Wearing Elixer des Merveilles today thinking some of its siblings were in the right category at least…
I’ve been testing the new PdE too especially now that LT has given it high praise. There’s something in it I can’t smell. The first time I wore it it disappeared: I forgot all about it! The next time I practically poured it on (from the sample vial). It’s definitely luminous. I get the rose. Again, I can tell I’m missing something though. I have to admit the third time I wore it I became very irritated by it after a few hours.
Having said that, PdE is a brand I admire. If the perfumes came in travel sizes and a package of them appeared at my house I would wear almost all of them.
Would you like to get more of that AG? If yes, drop me a line.
Yesterday’s SOTD was Malibu Lemon Blossom, following Chocolate Marzipan’s suggestion.
Today’s is a cheap and cheerful from Old Navy called Sea Salt and Fig.
Ooo there was a youtuber that gave those Old Navy’s high marks! i bet you smell good!
SotD is not matching today but I’ll chime it anyway to say that I’m wearing Olivier Durbano Pink Quartz.
Decants of Parfumerie Generale Komorebi and VC&A Neroli Amara arrived in the mail – will be testing them soon
I am excited about next week’s theme 😉 SOTD – Kerosene Walk the Sea. Second wearing in a week, must be love
Wowzer. I don’t know what that smells like!
He, i can send you a sample
Went with Eau de Rochas this morning. (Eau is aquatic, right?)
Dear Rochas: Please make this in a convenient half-gallon refrigerator size with Windex-type sprayer.
And bring back (unadulterated) Byzance!
TGIF!
I’ve been *this close* to buying Eau de Rochas so many times. Brief description? And does it have spices or oakmoss?
Okay, I’ll try — with caveats that I only have a dabber sample of the current formulation and no memory of what the scent was like in its early years — I smell lime, bergamot, verbena and coriander up top, and as it dries down a light, chypre-ish element comes out, which must be the moss and patchouli, along with vetiver. To me, it hints at spicy without being overtly so, and the florals are only barely present to my nose. It is light and refreshing but more interesting than a straight citrus because of the chypre aspect. Spraying lavishly would be fun – hence my request for a half gallon size!
Thank you, FearsMice! This helped, and reminded me why I took it off my *want* list. 😉
Ha!! I can’t remember: is it you and Undina who call Chypre Mousse the “crypt” scent? Like Deva, I like that one, too. 🙂
I don’t know that I have anything specifically aquatic, but I am in Fire Island which I love and certainly makes me FEEL like I am lying on the beach and swimming in the ocean- my happy place.
TGIF, friends!
My happy place too!
Love the pic- very moody!
Yes…would love to walk along that sea wall!
I wasn’t really in the mood for ANY perfume today and I have no outright aquatics-thought about Dune or Eau de Magnolia for its salt spray note or something with a heavy ambergris presence. Dabbed some Durga on my thumb since the melon note smells like calone (autocorrect wants “calzone” ????) and it’s still there and is a bit nauseating.
Settled on a small spritz of Derek Lam Silent St which has a watery, cool cucumber note amidst the white musk and is more indoor pool party than ocean.
Autocorrect’s not the only one who wants calzone!
????
I’ve been on a run of Aliage, one of my favorite summer scents, to suit a current heat wave. (Might have picked Ecume de Rose if I’d checked the day’s theme first – but maybe not, as Aliage’s galbanum really cools me in spirit).
Oh, have not worn Ecume in ages and wish I’d thought of it!
I never had problems with aquatics back in the day when people were wearing them, so I am fine with them, unlike quite a few people. Today I am wearing Shay & Blue Almond Cucumber. It does have a good amount of cucumber, but does not have that melon and cucumber kind of air about it.
I did not have a problem with them then either! I took on a dislike to melon much later. Now I’ve circled around again — I like *some* of them.
Nice photo Robin. La pluie for a frosty Saturday morning. This is the only Miller Harris I have tried (blind buy) and I like it a lot as it evokes a sense of ‘stillness’ , so it is a good scent when quiet focus is required. Reading Annie Ernaux’s The Years and enjoying it.
I have fallen so behind on Miller Harris, glad to hear that one is good.
Sel Marin for the CP. I got 2ml a while ago, I keep thinking I should like it but I don’t.
Time to pass it on maybe?
My sample pack for SP Parfums came in today so I am not participating. Instead, I am wearing Sunmilkflowers which I quite like. I will have to test further.
I was planning to wear Aqua di Parma, Aqua Iris Noble. It was an accidental purchase from evil bay. I thought I was buying the EDT. I don’t hate it but normally only wear it as a sleep scent.
Where did you get your sample pack? And what samples are in there?
Surrender to Chance. Scents are:
Sunmilk Flowers
Violet Moss
Lignum Vitae Forte
Pink Patchouli
Fund air
Suntanglam
Civitte Intense
Unfortunately, it does not include Poweder & Dust. I may just blind buy it in the travel size.
Correction, Funfair
Thanks, this seems like an interesting house. Report back! Powder and Dust has alot of hype right now, I’m hoping it’s really good.
I already did a quick dab of the entire coffret. They are all nice with the exception of Civette Intense. That one smells like a barn yard and is not my thing at all. I had to scrub it fast! My favorite so far is Sunmilkflowers Flowers, a pretty sappy green yet lightly sweet floral. Not sure if I need it though. I haven’t found P & D in the US.
I can’t do barnyard either.
It’s early on a lazy Saturday morning here, and I’m lingering over breakfast enjoying NST. I’m with a few others here in that aqautic and salty fragrances are not my thing. I might briefly join the use-it-up brigade, and use the last of my sample of Fatih Sultan Mehmet, it’s definitely on my buy list.
That picture is lovely. The colors are gorgeous. …Does it strike anyone else as freezing cold, though, or is it just me?
Friday the 13 and Han Solo’s and Captain Picard’s birthdays!? That makes for an interesting day, no?
I’m in Pacifica Malibu Lemon Blossom for today’s project. I really lucked out with the “or something meant to evoke the sea” portion of the challenge, since I pretty much hate aquatic scents.???????? I remember an early description of MLB by Brooke was that it was meant to capture the scent of surfacing from the waves while surfing in Malibu. (Now the website just says, “This fresh scent captures the free spirit of the Pacific Ocean with lemon blossom, litsea cubeba, flowering angel’s trumpet, fresh herbs and salty sea breezes.”)
Looking forward to reading what everyone else is wafting today….
Have a great weekend, all!
It totally looks cold to me!
Both cold and creepy!
That is a great picture. It strikes me as cool and a bit moody.
The temperature here is the exact opposite. It’s my day off so we went to run errands; it was about 85 degrees (30 ish celcius) when we left this morning. I splashed on loads of Florida Water before heading out.
The closest to the water I will be is on my deck with the misters going full blast. Stay cool everyone!
We interrupt this “Use It UP!” streak to bring you Aquatic Friday. ????
SOTD = Hermes Eau des Merveilles Bleue EdT, from a sample generously supplied by Hajusuuri. I am house twins with a few of you today, I think.
Tomorrow *might* be the start of another heat wave in my area. Welcome to July the Hot. ????????
Haha!I think I am done for now with the mini-project…too many other Winter favorites I have been neglecting.
I noticed that you had managed to empty the “never-finished” bottle of that Lush Orange Blossom. Congrats! ????
My heatwave started today, and will last until Monday. We need rain badly, but chances are slim.
You are my early warning system for approaching weather, since you seem to get it a day or two before I do.
Ha! And I use Madtowngirl as my warning system. We are so much more reliable than watching the news!???? I will let you know when I see the first snowflake.
Are you enjoying EdM Bleue?
And the Hot! I hate it?
Yes, I am. When I first tried it, I called it an aquatic perfume for people who don’t like/hate aquatics. I *do* have to be in a rather specific mood to wear it.
Never got to put any perfume on today, but went for a swim in the river, so had an aquatic Friday at any rate….happy Friday!
Ironically for Aquatic Friday I’m under a boil-water advisory due to a pump failure. Sigh. Probably going to switch to beer soon! 🙂
I’m wearing a sample of Bel Respiro EDP. I used up an 8 ml decant of the EDT in one spring a few years ago and I’ve been missing it. The EDP is not quite the same, but close. Very nice.
Ugh! What a bummer about your boil water advisory. I hope that you won’t be dealing with that for long.
I went to an estate sale this morning where I found something I’ve lusted over forever!
Jean Paul Gaultier Fragile. The edp globe!!!Pristine condition, sprayed maybe once or twice.Bliss.A while back a friend found me the edt, sooo happy to add this one! There were a couple of other perfumes from Revlon and Yardley as well, but all fairly used and clearly saw some sun and humidity over the years,so I passed on them.
Nice!
Wow, belated congrats!
THIS is my category. I recently learned the difference between aquatic and marine. Aquatic is watery and marine is oceany. Ozonic is airy. Now I Know! Here’s my list with the first being the ultimate:
Bulgari Aqua
Michael Kors Island
Biotherm Eau Oceane
Gwen Stefani G of the Sea
Giorgio Beverly Hills Ocean Dream
Rochas Fleur D’Eau
Cacharel Eau d’Eden
Lancôme O Oui!
DSquared Ocean Wet Wood
Kenzo L’Eau Pour Homme
CSP Aqua Motu
Because a key on the board deleted my post, I had to retype it and I left out the very important Bond No. 9 Hamptons!
