Monday scent of the day 6/11

Posted by Robin on 11 June 2018 193 Comments

Happy Monday, and happy Corn on the Cob Day! (Plus, happy birthday to Hugh Laurie.) What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm doing a wish list week, although I have not really ranked my wishlist yet to figure out what the top 5 might be. I'm starting off with the original Comme des Garçons + Stephen Jones.

Reminder: 6/15 will be Wish List Friday...wear a fragrance that's in the top 5 of your full bottle wish list. Suggested by Katrina.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the dark blue Stephen Jones hat for Comme des Garçons (used, but mint condition) is $879 at 1stDibs.

LOL!!! I am getting good use out of everything…Fieno got finished so quickly because several family members asked for decants….I just finished up what was left in the bottle…and since I last posted I got another compliment…

I had a very busy weekend, unfortunately I could not find a moment to read or join the weekend poll.
And when I was finally done with all the chores and appointments, I was so tired all I could do was listen to music. Haha

    SotD is Vetiver Extraordinaire.
Already have FB (gift from my lovely husband) so I am not ‘on theme’ today.

Wearing the first on my wish list: Guerlain Encens Mythique D’Orient.I hope it is not discontinued by the time I am ready for a full bottle.

I was looking this weekend for a place to get at least a sample of Honore des Pres I love les Carottes, but I could not find it anywhere. Anyone knows if it was discontinued?

    Happy Monday everyone!

Back in the day I had the silver one for no 19, the white one with a gold rim for no 22 and the black one with a gold rim for no 5. They looked beautiful lined up on my dresser.

Good choice! I’ve been scouting my local department stores for a sample of no. 19 but it’s a tough one to find. I tested it on paper at an airport duty free shop last time I was traveling, and now I completely understand why so many folks here rave about it.

buy edt for 19. dream for pure 19 with a dabber. it’s totally diferent. edt is for taking on anything, pure parfum is a skin scent with good longjevity. a date or office could have no qualms. edt & eau de parfum are same in your face, pure parfum lays back to catch you after eau parfum had you running all day. I have all 3.

Hermes is one of my favorite brands, but I don’t own a full bottle of any of their fragrances. So far I’ve gotten minis and decants only. So this week I’m wearing Hermes. First up is Kelly Caleche, from a mini. This is only the second time I’ve worn it, and I like it, but is it full bottle worthy? I’m not sure yet. So far I don’t love it.

Corn on the Cob is one of the many things I love about summer. My dad grew up on a farm and the saying goes “knee high by the 4th of July” which means we can count on the corn about two weeks after that. We have a wonderful Farmer’s Market here- the largest producers only in the country!- so Saturday’s mean fresh corn. I like to cook extra and freeze some to have during the winter.

SotD is Eau des Merveilles Bleue. That blue bottle is beautiful but I don’t need it so technically I am not on theme for today. The original will always be my most loved. I’ll enjoy the last of my sample though.

SOTD is SB Gypsy, which is almost gone. I may have to spring for a full bottle because this is one of those anytime anywhere scents that’s just so easy to wear.

Not really hankering after much, perfume wise. Pretty happy with what I have right now. There’s a lot to be said for contentment. ✌????

Joining you in Gypsy. I have a lot of smell bent perfumes and I think they might be the rough ‘n’ ready alternative to the more suburban wash ‘n’ go of Jo Malone… I.e. Spray and walk away easy and appealing. Have you tried Glamour Yeti? You might like it because you like Gypsy and Smoked Ambergris. I am hankering after 1995

My last week of vacation. Spent the evening in NJ last night for my great nephew’s Bar Mitvah which was lovely and nice to see my family here from LA. I’m feeling old, as I can’t believe my oldest nephew is 37 already! This am we’re meeting up with a cousin of my father’s in NJ whom I’ve never met before so I’m looking forward to that.
SOTD is ELDO Yes I Do since it’s one of the few decants in my bag. I like this one and if a bottle appeared on my doorstep, I’d happily take it in, but not sure I’d buy it. Longevity is like 1-2 hours on me. It’s a good cool weather LOTV since the base has some heavier notes.
Looking forward to a quieter week after today!

I’m actually wearing the next addition to my list, hopefully. I’m wearing the last use of my bottle and a full tester ends in an hour on eBay. Since it’s half price and I can’t fully afford a real bottle this summer, I’m going to keep it in my vest, for now. I will say though, it wasn’t reviewed well but it’s one of my favorite for summer.

Stephen Jones? Not at all, though I doubt there’s a natural in there that necessitated a reformulation.

I was honestly just thinking about how I needed some new Timbuktu and got sucked into a was-it-was-it-not thread. Luckily my Saks carries those new.

SOTD is my newest purchase, Kuumba Made Lily of the Valley.

Wow, this stuff projects!! I just put on a couple dabs and I was getting big whiffs of it even while walking outside in the breeze. I’m not familiar with the scent of LOTV IRL (lol), so can’t comment on how realistic it is. It’s a fresh, spring floral that smells to me like honeysuckle.

For those who were wondering, I also tried Kuumba Made Arabian Rose and Persian Garden, but didn’t love either one enough to purchase. Arabian Rose is exactly what I expected it to be- a straightforward, big red rose. No surprises there. Persian Garden was harder to pin down. It’s very clean-musky, a little powdery, slightly fruity at the beginning, and, of course, floral. I can’t pick out any of the individual floral notes- it smells more like a mixed bouquet to me.

CM8, I didn’t find the rose absolute you recommended, but now I’m lemming the neroli oil in jojoba and the sandalwood oil in jojoba. Maybe on my next trip to Whole Foods!

If you can’t find the NOW Rose or NOW Neroli or NOW Sandalwood I highly recommend both Vitacost and All Star Health (no affiliation). I have ordered from them numerous times and recommend both for price. All Star Health is cheaper but you pay for shipping. Vitacost has free shipping with 49 dollars in purchases (very easy to do once you see all of their offerings on lots of stuff) and always has really good sales. I am still using the neroli on my face every morning as a moisturizer….it smells SOOOOO good :)

Happy Monday Everyone! Well, today was supposed to be my last day at work for the summer, but I am leaving to go to Ft. Worth with some of my educator colleagues. We have a week long convention to attend. When we return, then I will have like 4 weeks off for summer break. Whoever thought that educators get 3 full months off for vacation, ha! Those days have been long gone.
My SOTD is the scent that started it all for me; Nectarine Blossom & Honey by Jo Malone. This will always be my #1 scent. It never gets old to me. Enjoy your week, my scented friends.

SotD = Comme des Garçons Eau de Cologne

It smells great, a bit like 4711 and Old Spice had a love child. I like this one a lot, though I am the first to admit it’s easy for just about any cologne to wiggle it’s way into my heart.

A big thank you to the fabulous NSTer who shared their collection of CdG samples with me. It’s a house I have wanted to try more of for years.

Hope everyone has a marvelous Monday, wherever our perfumed adventures take us.

However, I wasn’t paying attention this morning so today’s SOTD is the tiniest dab of Obsession Sheer. I have a bottle, so it’s not on the WL. I will do better the rest of the week!

I shall have to explore more of their other vanillas too. I think I’ve sniffed most all the Montale vanillas now. Such dedication to VQ ’18. ????

Off-topic, Robin, but wanted to update you re the Frasers department store situation. They are closing 31 of their 59 shops, including (which is a big surprise) their flagship one in Oxford Street, London. Thankfully (& selfishly!) their Glasgow shop is unaffected. I’m not sure about their fragrance offerings in any of their shops other than Glasgow, but as it’s their original shop (apparently the company’s founder lived there when it was a rather grand family home) I’m assuming it’s a cut above their standard ‘high street’ ones.

Far too much competition in Oxford Street – Debenhams, John Lewis & of course Selfridges – plus a visiting perfumista will also seek out the independent & niche shops, & if you’re in London anyway there’s always Harvey Nicks, Liberty & Harrods. Glasgow has no competition whatsoever regarding fragrance, & in this age of retail catastrophe there was no way Frasers & Jenners were both going to stay open in Edinburgh, & the latter was an institution long before Frasers bought it.

I have fond memories of Axe haha. When my son was in middle school, he and his friends were QUITE fond of Axe body spray lol! I remember one time I was driving them to the mall and they had sprayed WAY too much (and each one had a different scent). I had to roll down my windows and told them “less is more!!” Luckily now my son’s fragrance game is a bit more sophisticated ha!

I’m sure you, however, smell great in your Axe!

I was intrigued by this range of theirs,in darker cans and a bit more expensive than regular Axe.This one is the Oud Wood and Dark Vanilla.Even the nozzle sprays short bursts like “our usual lovelies”,not the endless cloud you get from the usual Axe cans.
        I enjoy a good/bad cheapie.Haha.

Today I used up the last of my sample of Eva Kant, which I love for shifting around so much, from citrus to spicy to herbal to woody floral, ending up as a soft spicy vanilla. 1) SOTD: Am at home today, slightly ill but working. Am in Karma cream in which a spritz of Molinard Jasmine was added. Lovely.

    2) My backyard fence is now COMPLETED, and it looks lovely! We also fix all the other missing holes in the fence perimeter, so now everything looks very sturdy and nice. We still have a bit of leftover lumber from the downed fence, so will need a clever way to reuse that wood- no way that is going in landfill.

Not a wish list fragrance today (and besides, my wish list has shrunk down dramatically, due to my wanton purchasing); I’m working through my exciting attars from India sent to me by the wonderful coin-op. Today’s scent is called Samaa, which is a really gentle spiced vanilla. It’s so soft-focus that I didn’t even realize it was vanilla for a while.

Yesterday, I tried Hayaa, which was a lovely, simple, feminine rose scent; the day before, it was Jashn-e-Oudh, which was a pretty spectacular oudh musk (this from someone who’s not usually fond of oudh) with incredible staying power (still there after a swim + shower). Yup, I’m a definite fan of Sugandhco, and highly recommend getting their attars. They also ship to the US very quickly. Shipping is kind of expensive ($30 for six attars, $40 for 12), but the perfumes are very inexpensive, and the quality is excellent. (No affiliation.) Thankful to have been turned onto this line :) especially since the attars do well in high heat and summer is finally coming to northern CA!

A kind NSTer passed along some samples of their vanilla based scents and then I purchased more samples on Ebay but I’ve really only focused on their vanillas. I am daunted by the size of the line too but I then focused on the vanilla ones only which made it more doable.

They have a ton oud ones which I think are popular too but right now I’m anti-oud kind of. ????

And then there is the Mancera line too which is also prolific. ????

SOTD = Solstice Scents Estate Vetiver

Technically not on theme since I have a FB. Patch-lovers will live this. This is a nice blend of vetiver, vanilla, patch and sandalwood. The first 20 seconds is nose-hair singeing and then it settles down with big sillage. I practiced yesterday so I know 2-3 sprays is plenty!

    (It’s the last mini description)
    http://hautemacabre.com/2017/07/solstice-scents-spring-2017-collection/

    Commuting Woes No. 433:

Public Display of Affection – leave it home! The subway is not the place to be smooching, hugging and feeling up your partner’s butt. I swear this couple would be having sex on the spot if it were not frowned upon (or perhaps illegal). It was really disgusting to witness.

Just felt a little earthquake. One of the ‘benefits’ of living near the San Andreas fault, lol. This one actually was quite close, and small. Since the San Andreas transmits shaking rather well, I can never tell if it’s close-and-small or far-and-big til I go check the USGS website.

I am seriously dragging today. I was sleeping so heavily that I’ve had a harder time than usual with waking up. But I’m wearing Aedes de Venustas, the rhubarb and tomato leaf one. I got a travel spray in the last swap meet and will probably buy the travel spray pack when I use this one up.

That sounds lovely. I like the CB I Hate Perfume version of RCT.

I ended up with an iced blonde americano from Starbucks.

I’m wearing Parfum d’Empire Eau de Gloire. Oh how I love this verdant spicy mediterranean chypre and it smells really good with the humidity we have today.

Love a theme for friday, this should be easy.

After the weekend’s sniffaffair, I was hell bent on organizing my fragrances. For reasons that made sense at the time but are now lost to me, last night I decided I just had to drain three samples that didn’t fit in with anything/place in my new “system” (please DO NOT ask me what that system is; now I have not idea). They are Hermes Pamplemousse Rose, Bois d”Orage, and Versace Blue Dylan (woman)… so I am in the Hermes now. Like this one a lot!

For the record Robin, that Stephen Jones is at the top of my wish list (I have two decants of it, which are indeed keeping me from whipping out my credit card… for now.)

Have put three books mentioned over the weekend on hold for download. Thanks for the suggestions!

California Reverie today as I wanted something pretty. Am at another bank dealing with getting my Dad’s accounts converted to me. Such a slow process. Every bank is different.

The big ones seem to centralize the function of dealing with deceased. The fastest was the bank that wasn’t centralized.

At least you smell good. All of dad’s accounts were joint accounts with mom. After he passed, my siblings and I talked about it with mom and decided that all the accounts should be converted to POD to me. One account came out of nowhere and I need to convert that too.

Mom and Dad has created a trust structure back in the 80s when they went to live in Saudi Arabia. That has made it relatively easy because I am Successor Trustee.

I would NEVER have known today’s picture was of a hat if not for the caption. And I had my glasses on! ????

Crazy and scary weather here last night. One town a few miles down the road got 5 inches of rain in the past 24 hours. Some roads around here are closed due to standing water, since the ground is already saturated. Safe and sound on high ground at my place.

Not on beam with the CP just yet. Laura’s post late Friday reminded me that I had a sample of Mayotte, and a decant of Mahora, so I am revisiting both of them this week.

SOTD = Guerlain Mayotte, from the sample stash. It lasts better in warmer weather, and seems like it has more body than I remember when I first tested it. I guess that weather really matters with this one.

The weather is crazy and insane. I’m not sure why I couldn’t have been born during the Little Ice Age rather than during global warming!

What do you think of Mahora? I got a chance to sniff it over Oakland Fresca’s this past weekend and quite like led it, but i hear tell it’s the universally unloved Guerlain…????

I rather like it, but it is definitely not a typical Guerlain. Not sure I can come up with anything that is similar to it, besides its sibling Mayotte.

It rained here ALL DAY yesterday, but nothing as dire as 5 inches in 24 hours!

Yeah I was shocked when I heard that number. Mr. Jalapeno almost did a spit take into the kitchen sink when I told him.

Not quite all day rain here yesterday. It seemed to come in waves or pulses. Apparently the worst of it fell overnight.

It’s almost too late to post today. My SOTD is Beige. I have a rapidly evaporating decant of the EDT that I swapped for a few years ago. I also have a sample of the EDP courtesy of kpaint. The EDP is very nice but lacks some of the sparkle of the EDT. I never pulled the trigger on the EDT but wish that I had in retrospect.
