Tuesday scent of the day 5/29

Posted by Robin on 29 May 2018 229 Comments

Happy Tuesday! It's also Biscuit Day and JFK's birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm smelling more summery than the weather, in Guerlain Mandarine Basilic.

Reminder: on 6/1, wear something milky or creamy in honor of World Milk Day (and the start of Dairy Month).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Wedgwood Parklands teapot ("Update your coffee time setting with the timeless elegance of the Wedgwood Parklands collection. This teapot in the range has been crafted in Wedgwood’s home of Stoke-on-Trent, England, and features elegant peonies and stately buildings.") is £100 at Harrods.

Testing Organza Indecence, which is often described as creamy. And I agree that the opening is very creamy – sweet and spicy milk-based dessert. Later it gets drier, and woody notes are now quite prominent. Lovely scent (but definitely not summery).

Jo Malone’s Wood Sage and Sea Salt layered with lime basil and mandarin. A little spicy. A little salty. A little summer.

    Happy Tuesday!

In Guerlain AA Pamplelune for a very hot and humid day.

I decided to stay home one more day to finish what I did not have time to during the long weekend. I will run errands and maybe have some rest later in the afternoon.

Yesterday, I made the spinach/artichoke dip from Gail’s recipe and it was fantastic. Ready to finish what I left for today. The following weekends I will make more based on the other recipes some of you sent me. Thanks a lot! I will report back.

    Have a great day everyone!

The AA line is worth trying, but the longevity is not that great, except for Lys Soleia. Unfortunately, many have been discontinued. I have not tried for a long time the new releases. My big favorites: Pamplelune and Herba Fresca. They are great summer scents!

Back to the grind in MFK A la Rose. Just pretty and light for a warm, humid day. Looking forward to an event tonight at the Greenwood Cemetery- storytelling by various women under the full moon by candlelight followed by a dance party. It’s called The Secret Society of the Sisterhood. I think it launched in a cemetery in LA recently. What perfume to wear?! I have 1 BPAL oil…

Vintage Diorella today. I have a big spray tester I bought a few months ago that I never use because the cap is broken, so I’ve been sticking to my old faithful splash flask. This stuff is like heaven! Jasmine, moss, and herbs, and a heaping of steamed melon. Somehow it works.

I have a question/request for you good people of NST, cross-posted from the lazy weekend poll. One of my best friends is a huge fan of SSS Champagne de Bois and has no backups; she didn’t realize Laurie Erickson was closing shop. Does anyone have any they aren’t married to and would be willing to sell or swap? (She already emailed Laurie, and Laurie is out of stock.) She’d be so grateful and would make a good offer! Let me know if you can help us out. You can email me at elisagabbert at gmail dot com

She’s closed down her lab, so she won’t be making any more of anything, unless she gets someone to take over her shop from her. Right now, she’s just selling out her stock. I suspect if you didn’t e-mail her in January begging to buy off her stock, you have no chance of being able to ever do so (I e-mailed her in January and am just now getting my order).

    Happy Tuesday!
Today is my Saturday after a long holiday work weekend. Four days, 48 hours… Did I mention it was long? Lol.
One of the bonuses of being at work is: climate control! We have been instantly thrust into a heatwave here much like we would get in August, except it is May. It has me really craving citrus scents of the dry variety. Sweet will not do in this heat.
    SotD is Cedrat Enivrant.
The only real thing on my agenda today is to get some perfume goodies in the mail.
    Stay cool everyone!????

My old time go to is vintage Aliage. Vintage O de Lancôme was another. FM Vetiver Extraordinaire, Eau Sauvage are also so very dry and crisp. In florals, I do love Fiori di Capri for summer. Again…dry to me. And, oddly, Couvent de Minimes Eau Cloître – which is straight up rose. But refreshing, clean rose. And OJ Frangipani…mouth puckering lime at first and then floral.

TOMK suffering from a migraine so I’m in the bland and inoffensive Baldesarrini “Ambré”. Our bank holiday weekend was a washout – a month’s worth of rain fell in an hour so there was flooding and disruption of roads and rail. Our local station tracks were under 2 feet of water. And some poor 86-yr old coot died, apparently after driving around the ‘road closed’ signs and into 5 feet of water where the road passed under a railway bridge. But he knew better, eh?

I’m glad you and TOMK are ok. As far as the driver, we all do silly things, when we know better, fortunately none of my silliness has killed me. But, yeah, always surprised at the risks people take especially against mother nature.

Summer is definitely here in these parts. Yesterday was the first day I really felt uncomfortable, even in the shade. Probably because it was 94!! ????

Today I’m in Epidor, and it’s supposed to be another hot one. I got called off work the past two nights, which is a bummer because they put you on call and you can’t do anything. I’m hankering to get out to Lake Tahoe and bust out my paddle board since summer is planing to stay.

I’ve never been but have high expectations! I’ve been researching beachy dogfriendly areas of the lake and found a nice one on the southern end, which also happens to be the closest to me. I want to go during the week when hardly anyone else will be there and just bask in the beauty and solitude! ????

The eastern end of the beach in Incline Village (north end in Nevada) is great for dogs. Specifically, it seems to be the spot for local dog owners to gather starting about an hour before and up to sunset. They sit and chat and the dogs run around together. Whenever we are there, we make a point of visiting that beach just to watch the dogs and for the incredible sunsets.

Sadly, T-Rex is a bit of a Boss and doesn’t like it when other dogs don’t do what she tells them to do. She’s okay 1:1, but if a bunch of dogs are running around, she feels the need to be in charge of their activities. And she does so in a very bossy way that the other puppers understandably object to. It can go downhill pretty quick ‘cause she can be a bit of a shi*!

Just putting a toe into the perfumed pool this morning while feeling so much better. It’s (almost) a blessing to have a virus over a long weekend when nobody expects much from me. Thanks for the kind words over the past few days.

Onwards and upwards, there’s perfumes a-waiting!

Woke up a couple of hours earlier than I needed or wanted to this morning and slathered my hands with some No 5 lotion in hopes it would lull me back to sleep. It did not, but I did top it off with some No 5 edt.

I’ve been thrown off my usual routine this past month (which is not a bad thing, really) and wearing perfume but not checking in. I spent the first half of the month with my sister & fam in Ottawa, with only days to prepare for departure. Since returning, my husband has been negotiating 2 different positions which would send us across the country for 2-3 years.

When I left for Ottawa, I’d just begun my usual spring cleaning and swapping out winter & summer wardrobes (which is time-consuming under the usual circumstances.) I’ve been wrapping it up with a mind to a possible cross-country move. We’ve also been going through our storage unit, which holds about 90% of our belongings, with the same frame of mind. (Though we’d been meaning to do so for quite some time. Once we parked our stuff there, we quickly forgot what we were storing and suspected lots of it was really stuff we don’t need.)

Anyway, I’m a bit out of the loop, but hope you’re all well and happy almost-summer!

Also 55 years since Hillary and Norgay summited Mt. Everest.

When visiting Darjeeling, we visited a tiny museum that contained much of their original equipment and pictures. Not the mega industry it is now.

Post shower a healthy spray of Volutes. The bottle is less than half, have been wearing frequently and getting lots of compliments.
When it gets below a quarter I can replace. ( silly mind game)

Today, after a couple of days of off and on prepping, is “paint the powder room” day. It has been a really horrid, deep camo green since I moved in, but it is going to become a light, greyish blue, to help with the fact that it has no windows.

I might wear Jaisalmer for its calming effect.

In 1969, which I am still making up my mind about. It sort of reminds me of a Neela Vermiere style (or Duchaufour) fruit, with all the cardamom, but with a spritz of cigarette ash…. Cigarette is NOT in the notes, but something in this scent makes me think of cigarettes, ever so slightly. Peaches, cardamom, chocolate and the faintest whiff of cigarette ash…

Poor man has been moaning all evening about being a walking bug repellent. Honestly, I think it is interesting. 8-)

Hello, dear friends! I hope you’re all doing wonderfully :) Today is something like our second or third hot day of the year, which is both exciting and worrying. (What comes after the hot days? The cold days :( )

I hope you had a wonderful long weekend! I certainly did. We went up to Tomales Bay in northern CA, went on hikes every day, saw elk and owls and seals and other wonderful wildlife, ate oysters at the plurality of our meals, tasted and bought cheese, warmed ourselves by a wood fire each evening after evening walks on the docks, and just generally had a fabulous time.

I rearranged my perfumes so that my bottles are in a drawer so they stay dark and dry, while my samples/decants (anything handmade) are out on top. Hopefully this will promote sample usage as well. Last week, I noticed that my Grand Soir decant from a splitmeet last year was going bad! A lot of it seems to have evaporated, leaving a dark-colored film of oil on top. So I decided to fight fire with fire and wear it today in the heat. The top notes seemed a little wonky (after just a year!! What happened to this decant?? All the other ones look and smell fine!), but after a minute, it settled down, and I smell absolutely wonderful, if I do say so myself.

I had the same worry realizing summer solstice comes in a few weeks. What happens after the longest day of the year? Shorter days.

I have my perfume stored the same way. I’ve started taping/parafilming decants to prevent evaporation and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. Others that aren’t taped up have lasted for years with zero evaporation. *throws hands in air*

Yeah, I feel that way every summer solstice :( It’s worse this year because I have to drive home from work IN THE DARKNESS in the winter! Right now, the sun goes down well after 8pm, so I hardly ever leave work after dark. Not looking forward to nighttime commuting again in the fall/winter.

Bottega Veneta Knot from a sample I brought with me. I’m really liking this scent.

I asked my nephew yesterday if he could smell my scent yesterday when he hugged me. He said he got gardenia from it. Close enough to Frangipani… my sinuses are such that I struggle to smell my scents after the first few minutes.

Gonna be another hot one. Power went out for about five minutes yesterday at my sister’s place. (It was about 97). That doesn’t bode well for her summer, when temps are commonly above that.

I do love a good bready note, so am enjoying it very much. It won’t displace my favorite, Lostmarch Lann Ael, but will be nice in slightly chillier weather, with the ginger and spices.

I have a green car and it also gets crapped on a lot. When I had a white car, I made the mistake of parking on the side of the parking deck that overlooked the street where pigeons held meetings. My car looked like a massacre occurred on the roof and crap flung all around the back of the car / hatchback glass (I parked nose out). I was embarrassed to drive it out of the deck but thank God it was a Friday and I was able to go to a car wash the next day. The car wash guy was horrified – it was THAT BAD.

It’s too hot and muggy to participate in this week’s theme, so I’m appropriately summery in PdN’s Eau d’Eté. Just lovely, and I’m about to finish my first bottle of this.

Song of the day = “The Waiting” by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Someone is coming out tomorrow to looking at the clothes washer, and see if it can be fixed. I hope so, and that it won’t cost an arm and a leg. After having done a few loads at a local laundromat, I really, really appreciate/miss having my own washer!

SOTD = Carnal Flower, courtesy of Hajusuuri. First time to try this in summer weather… I had liked it a lot in cold weather. It also is pretty darn good now, too!

The only pro about laundry mats is that you can do multiple loads at once and get done super quick. But yeah, a lot to be said for the convenience of doing it in your own home. Hope the fix is super cheap and easy????????

Oh my heart, I love that song, and the Tom Petty version is the best! Linda Ronstadt did a great cover of it, but no one wails like Petty did.

I did not know that Linda Ronstadt covered “The Waiting”. The word “iconic” is overused a lot, but I think it is totally appropriate for the Tom Petty version.

    SOTD Frederic Malle Noir Epices.
I don’t ever fish for compliments on my SOTD,but this one was a clear winner today!Lots of comments and I had to write it down plus where to buy it for a patient even!
It was a good day.Rainy and cold so the snuggly comfort of Noir Epices was perfect.

Today I’m trying two Xinu fragrances. I have Monstera on my left arm and OroNardo on my right. They’re both lovely! OroNardo is making me reconsider my previous distaste for tuberose. It’s not a very “me” fragrance, but it’s absolutely gorgeous in every way! Most tuberose scents I’ve tried are just plain boring, but this one is brimming with life. It glistens!

Monstera is beautiful too. Green-green-green with a hint of pineapple. More in my wheelhouse.

Both wear amazingly well in 94 degree heat with high humidity.

oooh, those sound nice. I love a good tuberose perfume. Somebody on NST recently asked for pineapple note recommendations . . . anybody remember who it was?

And those bottles are fab. I just added Xinu to my list of perfume houses to sample someday.

    SOTD = Chanel No.19 EDP

I have not worn the perfume love of my life in a while so today’s as good a day as any! I may be monogamous through Thursday unless someone mentions a milky / creamy perfume except Philosophy Fresh Cream.

So I tested Parfums de Marly Delina EDP and Exclusif on Sunday. Verdict: I am leaning towards the EDP with its tart creamy fruitiness vs the in your face sweet floral fruity vanilla with a slight bad breath musk (but nowhere near my definition of skanky). I can layer Delina EDP and Indult Tihota (or Dior Addict) to achieve the Exclusif without the bad breath. There, I decided – the EDP. The price is steep but there’s room in my collection for a creamy rhubarb.

Last Saturday’s barbecue was fun, especially since I stayed inside. It was way too hot outside, even under the shade!

In other news, I almost ran out of cell data without giving a kidney for another 1 GB. Thank goodness I had modest carryover from April and the cycle ended yesterday. I will upgrade to double my data plan for an extra $20 per month so we’re covered when traveling. I also took a closer look at all my apps and turned off background refresh.

Looking forward to reading all the comments!

Do you have Ninfeo Mio? I get some creamy milkyness from that one. Maybe because of the fig? It’s not a sweet cream, more of a citrus cream, kind of sherberty.
