It's Tuesday and it's the International Day of Families. What fragrance are you wearing?
I'm skipping teapots this week (although I am drinking a cup of Kenilworth Ceylon) to highlight a sort of "outdoor museum": the Stuart Collection of public art at The University of California, San Diego. It includes a fantastic sculpture by Niki de Saint Phalle that has become a sort of mascot for the school, but Terry Allen's trees were what I found most captivating while I was there as a student. They're eucalyptus trees that had been cut down to make room for new construction, and Allen encased them in creosote and small squares of lead, then fitted them with audio speakers so they would talk to you (or sing to you) as you were walking across the campus. To match, I'm wearing the fragrance that has always called up my time in San Diego: Comptoir Sud Pacifique Aqua Motu.
Reminder: on 5/18 we're celebrating Museum Day. Wear a fragrance to match your favorite painting (or other object, anything you like!) in a museum, and if you can, post a link to an image.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Note: top image shows Trees (1986) by Terry Allen, from Stuart Collection at University of California, San Diego. If you scroll down at that link, you can watch a short video about the Trees.
That is an interesting place, Robin. Thanks for sharing.
I am wearing Chanel 28 La Pausa (EDT, I think). Lots of lovely irises, so my museum match is Irises by Vincent van Gogh. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irises_(painting)#/media/File:Irises-Vincent_van_Gogh.jpg
You smell niiiiiicce.
Love that painting.
A great pairing!
Fab!
Good one!
Hi all!
I’m in Mojito Chypre today, since it’ll be blazing hot today. Last time I posted about it I think I stood alone in enjoying it but the fizzy strawberry strikes me as quirky and fun. Wouldn’t wear it daily but I’m enjoying it today!
And thank you Robin, the trees sound fascinating.
fizzy strawberry sounds great!
It’s wonderful. Really does smell like a drink, and a well-done one too.
I rather liked Mojito Chypre when sampling it and was somewhat shocked by abundance of negative reviews. I am with you: would not wear it daily, but this oddball strawberry is fun.
Me too! I very rarely like fruity notes but MC is very dry and great personality.
San Diego smells so good!
I’m wearing Slow Explosions, a woody rosy saffron leather with a bit of fruit. This would make a good candle.
It really does — I miss that smell all the time.
I don’t notice any particular smells in SD, except the beach when I am there. What do you smell?
I smell eucalyptus mixed with flowers mixed with warm rocks. I love love love it.
Wearing Aramis Calligraphy Rose today – I always picture this one as giving off a warm, golden glow.
Matches one of my favourite paintings. The treatment of light in this one is amazing
http://matthiesengallery.com/work_of_art/clytemnestra-and-agamemnon
Oh yes, I quite agree about the glow. Good match!
And being a lover of Greek myths, I appreciate the theme.
I love that painting. So beautiful.
I saw this at the Louvre, and I think I stood there for more than a half hour, just staring at the light through that curtain. It mesmerized me
Those trees sound wonderful! I will make a point to visit if I ever go to San Diego.
My museum experience of the day is a couple years ago with my husband at the Walker museum in Minneapolis. Without knowing anything about it, we walked into a dark auditorium that was screening The Clock by Christian Marclay. We quickly realized that the film showed movie clips containing clocks somewhere in every one. It took us longer to realize that the clocks were running in sequence – if one clip had a clock tower showing 12:02, the next might have a character wearing a watch that showed 12:03. And it took us even longer to realize that the time of the movie was synched up to real time, so the clocks on the screen were showing the current time in Minneapolis. We thought we’d get bored quickly but it was actually totally fascinating and we stayed for over half an hour.
Anyway in honor of that memory and the length of the film which equals the number of hours in a day, I am wearing 24 Fauborg.
Interesting story, and I love your pairing!
I’m usually skeptical of those art projects but this one sounds fascinating, I think I would have spent there a while too – thank you for the great description.
Oh, I love art movies like that! How interesting and fun! and you smell GREAT.
Very cool!
Interesting story! And you smell great!
I love that story and you smell wonderful.
I think that one was at the MOMA here and it was synced with real time which made it pretty trippy. I was equally in awe of the kind of attention to minute detail the creator had (or maybe OCD,lol). Great pairing!
I’m going to with Hermes Citron Noir.Love this much!
Layering this with the far dry down of Frederic Malle’s Music For A While which is still on my skin from Monday 🙂
This is the 1st Hermes in a while I am anxious to try.
Lean in a bit so I can get a whiff please ? 🙂
Its amazing. I love every bit of it. Run! Get a sample now 😀
Can’t yet. 🙁 I live in rural NE Canada, and Hermes won’t ship samples here. Need to wait till it hits the decant sites.
Haven’t been chiming in much lately as I’ve been very boring perfume-wise. SOTD (and yesterday) is Apres L’Ondee, which is fitting around these parts as we have been having quite a few deluges this week, with more on the horizon.
Same here- I’m trying to use up my samples and this has been today’s and yesterday’s scent.
Oh man, send some rain my way, please!
You smell wonderful.
Heeley Cuir Pleine Fleur for me today. Love its dry, suede-y floralcy.
Good morning Y’all…..
Was too busy yelling at the kids to GET OUT OF BED SCHOOL IS NOT OUT YET….so I left the house scentless. Rummaged around in my purse and found my Scentbird D&G La Temperance 14…..
My 17-yo is driving me nuts by sleeping until HE MUST GET UP and then everything is chaotic. This is my morning kid, too — he used to wake up at 6am every morning. It’s just in the last few months he’s been doing this.
I know part of it is developmental…..the teenage brain NEEDS massive sleep (almost as much as an infant!)….but I can’t get them to go to bed on time at night!!!! LOL
Mornings are not the time to try and get extra snooze…. 🙂
Talking and singing trees! That would make me happy????
SOTD is a repeat performance of FM Eau de Magnolia since I sprayed a bit on last night and could still smell it this morning.
I’ve had this travel spray for a few years and probably only ever used about 3mls worth. It always gets put in the possible swap pile, but have held on to it, and it’s just really clicking this year.
A good lesson in not giving up too soon!
True that. Though, I haven’t kicked myself for anything I’ve given away yet. I usually forget about it quickly and find something new that captures my attention. Cristalle could easily fill the EdM spot for me (and I rarely wear that one, either!)
I’m wearing Black Orchid, the first art reference that came to mind was Robert Mapplethorpe. I think they match each other pretty well. I think Tom Ford would agree. I appreciate Black Orchid more everytime I wear it. Now, that I figured out how to wear it.
That’s a really good match! I love his flower photos (the others, not so much.) Here’s one for you:
https://www.nationalgalleries.org/art-and-artists/90870/orchid-1987
Oh thank you for providing a link! The flower photos really are beautiful.
Great pairing!
Excellent match for scent and artist!
wearing SL fleurs d’oranger today, thinking about the theme, the bright colors of this perfume make me think of the work of grant haffner-maybe this one? https://www.granthaffner.com/shop/sunset-on-old-montauk-highway-1
Gorgeous picture, wow!
+1! Those colors!
I love Montauk, lived in the area for many years.
Wearing 1st. blind buy of the year, O de Lancôme. At first spritz, it hits you with citric & a medicinal smell. In a few minutes, mostly lemon with some vetiver. Very unisex. Looking for something to trade-off with my Cristalle & 19. Something with a little hint of floral would be ok. Most summer florals almost gag me in the heat. Any of you have ideas?
I like AG Eau d’Hadrien, or many of the Ateliers-although most are really fleeting on my skin. Le Labo Bergamote 22 is one of my all time favs.
I second the Eau de Hadrien – super crisp floral, very pretty but not sweet or unctous. The Ateliers are lovely but you have to re-apply.
I adore both Cristalle and 19, and two alternatives that I like in summertime are Azemour les Oranges and Carthusia Mediterraneo. They’re quite different, but both lovely in warm weather.
The past couple of years, my summer scents have gravitated around OJ Frangipani, which is very lime forward at first but floral. And Fiori di Capri, which is floral but dry.
Ooh, you make me want to try Fiori di Capri!
Jo Malone is my go-to when I feel like that.
French Lime Blossom, Bitter Orange, or Basil and Neroli.
I love California Reverie for a light crisp summer floral.
Or Eau de Magnolia, which Elisa P mentioned above!
The Pour Un Ete is lovely and crisp and stays that way.
I’d also like to add ELDO Fils de Dieu to the recommendations for summer fragrances. I like this a lot in our hot humid Houston summers. Citrus/lime and flowers plus some spice and coconut. Refreshing, not dull or flat, and not heavy.
I am unexpectedly off work today. A co-worker offered to pick up my shift today and she only needed to twist my arm a little bit for me to give it to her. Lol. It is going to be 75 and sunny! Now, what to do with this beautiful day I have been given!
Today’s pick is from my (no, it doesn’t really belong to me, but it is walking distance from my house) very own Chazen Musuem of Art, which sits on the university’s campus:
https://goo.gl/images/kojheu
I probably don’t have to tell you which perfume I’m pairing with it, but it’s the L’eau version.????
Enjoy the day!
Thanks!????
Have a wonderful mini-break!
Art cousin! My pairing is also with a Warhol portrait. You smell gorgeous.
Me too! I have a sephora sample. I can’t really smell it though; maybe I’m missing something here. Even right after putting it on I could barely detect it.
Yay for a beautiful day off!
Whoo hoo for a gorgeous day off! Enjoy!
Bogue’s MEM today, and I think the closest painting is Sigmar Polke’s Deucalion’s Flood. I was lucky enough to see that at the big retrospective in the Palazzo Grassi in Venice. It’s almost unphotographable–particularly because of its size, partly because it’s translucent. It’s got the same shimmering, shapeshifting quality as MEM, and the shifting between purples and golds.
(probably the best online images are in this magazine: http://www.revuepinaultcollection.com/en/numero_7/venise/sigmar-polke#3 )
I’ve got one photo of a detail that kinda-sorta brings out out more of the almost-living-thing levels of shimmer https://www.instagram.com/p/BLmQXsiBUnN/ that you get from pouring resins and paints onto mesh and then hanging them in that light.)
wow, that is a perfect art pairing for MEM. Now I want to wear MEM at the Palazzo Grassi, that would feel like a dream within a dream.
Dream within a dream is exactly what it was: we were drunk on art and Venice itself, and standing in that space at sunset. I amazing very lucky duck to have experienced such things.
Fascinating artwork there. I’m having trouble thinking about any perfume that would go with it. I have to look up more about MEM.
Mem, like aeon 001, has the trick of being incredibly complex without being grand or symphonic. And there’s a lot of breathing space inside the periods of density.
I am in Corsica right now!
This island is absolutely stunning and it smells amazing here. All kinds of flowers, herbs, woods, animals and the best aquatic mineral notes (not the weird ones you get in most perfumes haha).
Not wearing any perfume these days, but I am not missing it right now.
Wow! I really wanted to go to Corsica while in France- the pictures make it look AMAZING.
It IS amazing!
I only saw a small part so far (I am in the part up north, in the region called Cap Corse).
Yes there is lot of tourism of course but its not crowded with resorts, discotheques and high rises like on parts of the costa brava in Spain. Its quiet, and perfect for hiking and nautical sports.
And they produce lovely wines, slender and delicate (i did not know they had so many AOCs here). Local beer is quite good as well and Corsican honey is intense and delicious.
Okay, I am jealous now and I will save my pennies for a trip! I must go! 🙂 thank you so much for your impressions of Corsica- they need to hire you at the tourist office! 🙂
Haha 🙂
Only downside, the weather is somewhat unpredictable right now in spring. Being in the middle of a sea and very mountainous and all.
So one day the forecast was pretty decent and all of a sudden…rain and thunder. But the rain we had was short and sometimes it stayed a valley or a bay away from us (and we stayed dry).
Sounds amazing!
wow! have a great trip!
Have a wonderful time in Corsica!
Lucky dog — have a great time!
Wow, enjoy!!!
Mmm, the honey sounds good. One day I will make it to Corsica.
Wow, everything sounds incredible!
Wow. Have a wonderful time. I imagine Corsica needs no perfume. 🙂
I’m continuing to wear my untouched samples. Today is one that I just got, Imaginary Authors Mosaic. Great for the warm weather.
I like that one!
SL Fourreau Noir, which I never seem to get tired of. Licorice and lavender, so delicious. I guess if it were a painting it would be that all-black Ad Reinhardt piece: the more you look at it the more you see.
oh, that is my other favourite lavender scent–and that’s a really good art match! (I really like the ghost colours that sit under this one: http://www.tate.org.uk/art/artworks/reinhardt-abstract-painting-no-5-t01582 )
You smell great, love FN.
I love this week’s CP. It made me explore images of paintings by favorite artists.
Wearing just a few spritzes of Jour Ensoleille by SSS from a small travel spray. Oh how I hope someone takes over and makes this available again.
Mainly wearing because I was perusing work by Jack Stuppin, a local Sonoma County artist. We have one of his prints over our couch. He really captures that part of CA so well.
http://jackstuppinlimitedprints.com/image10.html
He really does! I want the Russian River one.
Ours is entitled Russian River. I love it.
Oh how funny that’s the one I picked! Love that area, too.
That picture made me smile immediately! Love it!
SotD = Assam of India —
— which made me think of Manet’s Sur le Plage
http://www.musee-orsay.fr/en/collections/index-of-works/notice.html?no_cache=1&nnumid=1140
Assam of India smells yellow then greyish-brown to me. I imagine the lady in the painting smells of lemony cologne and a cup of tea she had earlier in the day.
Nice!
thanks, Robin! and thank you for the mention of the art at UCSD. I will be out that way this summer, I’ve added it to my hopeful list of excursions.
I hope it will be interesting. I have not been on the campus in years; it used to seem a very peaceful place but I imagine that like everyplace else, it’s grown…
I love the pairing!
thanks, KellyC. I like an empty beach. 🙂
Lovely!
thanks, LizzieB!
ugh, that is Sur LA Plage! Note to self: take time this summer to brush up my franglais.
Hello scent twin!
Muse d’ Orsay is my favorite museum in Paris! Nice pairing.
thanks, hajusuuri!
**whispers** I much prefer Musee d’Orsay over the other museums of Paris, even the Louvre.
Terracotta
Tea Matcha Latte
David Hockney a Bigger Splash painting to match
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/photography/9022598/David-Hockney-and-the-Californian-swimming-pool-in-photography.html?image=1
I saw this in person at the Met last year..
Thanks for all the face wash recommendations- I went with the La Roche one (hydrating)
I love David Hockney, too bad I missed the retrospective exhibition.
But Ive seen his works a few times before, the dachshund paintings are adorable!
I see you saved yourself $157 000 000 on the Modigliani yesterday!
I’m wearing SL Vitriol d’Oeillet today. Didn’t really come up with an image to match but I liked this one anyway:
‘Carnations and Candy Wrappers’ by Daniel Allyn Lee
https://www.saatchiart.com/art/Painting-Carnations-and-Candy-Wrappers/859066/2866327/view
Loving the colors of that one!And not that expensive for a beautiful piece of art!You smell WONDERFUL of course!
Happy(ish) Tuesday!
1) A planned merger that my MegaCorp(tm) had planned with another MegaCorp(tm) has been put on hold, with corporate raiders now holding the strings. Sigh! Time to network REALLY HARD.
2) Am in Epic Gardenia (from a sample SIP) Lovely, but ddries down to a soft, persistent skin scent, multifaceted sweet white floral, but kinda abstract. It makes me think of the O’Keefe’s floral works:
https://www.okeeffemuseum.org/ (yes, thisis a reason why to vacation in Santa Fe)
Ugh, good luck!
And agree — one of many good reasons why.
+1 for O’keeffe, she makes me smile.
I picked O’Keeffe today as well! Come visit Santa Fe, I’ll meet you there!
Hurray! And I need to go!
Ugh! Mergers sound scary – I hope things will be ok.
I love Warhol portraits, and this is one of my favorites: https://www.sfmoma.org/artwork/FC.527.2
From my collection, the only thing that I could picture the wonderful Ms. Parton wearing was Noontide Petals. So Noontide Petals it is!
And I had forgotten that portrait entirely!
You smell wonderful!
I forgot to mention how much I love that grove of singing trees. Thanks for the reminder, Robin!
Wish we were both there right now 🙂
I’m in Hermes Agar Ebene today. It perfectly balances properties of a masculine scent with something suble, more sensual and transparent.
On the other hand I feel tired today, I had a visit from a fragrance supplier I work for, they didn’t tell us the exact purpose of their visit and we ended up talking for 2.5 hours about nothing specific. Such a waste of time…
Welcome to the corporate world…
HdP Moulin Rouge, applied very lightly due to my sinus problems today.
You smell lovely, hope you feel better soon!
SOTD is Hermes Un Jardin Mediterranee. Not sure the scent matches this picture, but the bottle does:
https://www.eckermanstudios.com/new-page-1/
The artist, Ea Eckerman, is one of my favorite local artists, and I have this print on my wall. The colors in my print are a little brighter than what I’m seeing on my monitor, but you get the idea 🙂
Wonderful!
Okay. I tried to play by the rules. I picked a painting I love, in this case Bruegel the Elder’s Fall of Icarus. Then I went through my perfumes… nothing jumped out as relevant. So then I started going through my samples and decants and landed on Poudre de Riz. Connection? Hot messes and weird wonders? It was instinct that made me pluck that one from the box… and that is the best I can do! (I don’t love Poudre de Riz… and now I am in for long haul! Sigh!!)
Pretty famous painting so most people are probably familiar with it, but here’s a link: https://artsandculture.google.com/asset/landscape-with-the-fall-of-icarus/6gGkgMwPyiEqUQ?hl=en&ms=%7B%22x%22%3A0.5%2C%22y%22%3A0.5%2C%22z%22%3A9.30900089305366%2C%22size%22%3A%7B%22width%22%3A1.5551952004034517%2C%22height%22%3A1.2375000000000007%7D%7D
Wow.. you put in a lot of work to participate
The plowman and his horse loom so large on that little strip of land with its perfect furrows. Evening is falling, yet all are hard at work. And how did Brueghel attain the shimmering radiance that illuminated this work? I think it’s lovely.
I love it because of all the industrious and oblivious goings on… the plowman, the shepherd, the sailors on the ships, the city in the distance… and then the small tragedy in the foreground that goes unnoticed —it is like human rights issues I cover… horrible tragedies and yet life just goes on for everyone else. After my son was dxed with brain cancer (he is in remission now!!), the painting makes even more sense. I find it comforting, strangely.
I didn’t know about that dx, but thought your son had another illness. What a hard time you have had. So sorry and glad that things are looking up.
He has several. 🙁
I can’t resist adding in this link to the wonderful Auden poem about this painting:
http://english.emory.edu/classes/paintings&poems/auden.html
Yes! Auden captures why we love Bruegel (or a copy of Bruegel 😉 )
And this is the Icarus poem exactly:
how everything turns away
Quite leisurely from the disaster
That is such a beautiful painting!I love the “incidental” way it was done.
Me too~!
Oh that is such a gorgeous painting! I saw it last year in Brussel, though I think the attribution to Bruegel is doubtful right now (some experts think its a copy). Anyways, Bruegel or not, i love it!
Yes… it has gone from being “by” Bruegel to being “attributed” to Bruegel. Or it is a copy painted a couple of years later… (!!) I’ve never seen it “in the flesh” and am envious!
I am really curious about poudre de riz. I have never smelled it. I was looking at antique and vintage poudre de riz on ebay the other day and some of the packaging and designs were lovely. An english author Michael Frayn wrote a novel Headlong …maybe ten years ago…based on the discovery of a lost Breughel. It was an okay read.
The dry down is actually quite nice. It is a firm presence is all I can say. So if you accidentally apply it when you aren’t exactly in the mood, it argues with you for the next hour.
I wish I could pass on my sample to you, which I inherited from a generous NSTer!
Perfect choice, that painting seems almost naive, but it says so much.
The most concern for Icarus seems to come from the bird on the branch, a reminder perhaps that though the universe may seem unconcerned with us, we are noticed by someone.
I am wearing one spray of Replica from Maison Margiela, a house I know nothing about. This was a tiny free sample, very floral, and I’m enjoying it.
Replica is the name of the whole series, so it probably has another name too — although won’t matter unless you decide to buy it!
I love looking at everyone’s choices for this project. I picked the painting at the link below by Georgia O’Keeffe (yay New Mexico) and paired it with Heure Exquise.
https://goo.gl/images/ZqaPj8
Oh LOVELY!I’m challenging myself to pair a perfume with a very specific Frida Kahlo painting for tomorrow!
Perfect match!
Stunning. The colors are fabulous.
Another yay! for O’keeffe.
It’s hot and humid here and I am in Deneuve today. Still looking for t-shirts because they are hidden somewhere.
Hope you find your T-shirts soon!
Glad someone else “loses” their clothing in the seasonal shift! I spent ages today trying to find a few missing items.
Today’s SOTD is the original Salvadore Dali’s Parfum de Toilette.
Art work is Salvador Dali’s The Persistence of Memory, I love his art works.
https://goo.gl/images/HgD0VT
A favorite piece of art for meas well!
Johnnob – have you seen his black and white movie Un chien andalou?
I have not! Thanks for the suggestion,I will look it up asap!✌????
content warning, there is a bit that is not for the squeamish! especially if you are squeamish about eye stuff
Eye stuff Regina?
Now I am even MORE intrigued, being an Ophthalmic nurse…at an Eye Hospital…in theatre!✌????????
Enjoy watching the movie John. I remember watching it back in college and being intrigued.
Regina is right about the eye squeamish stuff.
Oh, I remember that movie! I saw it in film class back in University eons ago. I recall that scene like it was yesterday.
Finally some art I can relate to! 🙂
Frederic Malle Monsieur is my SOTD.I still enjoy Portrait of a Lady wayyyyy more!
Oh!
Perfect pairing with some arty photography…You guys agree?????✌????https://goo.gl/images/kCF7oT
https://goo.gl/images/kCF7oT Hope this link works!
This has a gorgeous boozy note.
Agree! That man has a twinkle in his eye.
SOTD = Guerlain Mon Precieux Nectar
This painting comes close to my idealized perfume painting pairing:
https://www.vangoghmuseum.nl/en/collection/s0176V1962
It is steaming hot outside today. Summer has arrived but I don’t want it.
PSA: At JJill, starting May 18 until month end, you get 30% off a full price item for every gently used item you donate. The donation can be any brand. Love!
That is a wonderful pairing. I just put Mon Precieux Nectar on my desk at home so it will get a wearing this week.
The movie Loving Vincent is on my mind to watch soon. And now I am off to wander the Van Gogh Museum online.
One could get lost looking at artwork images online!
Love that pairing!
Thanks! My sister has a watch with this image on the watch face and wrist band. If I have a perfume room, this is my pick for wallpaper or an accent wall somewhere.
Gorgeous painting! It has a dreamy, reverie-like feel to it, IMO.
It does. I actually wanted one with a bird but the image that I pulled had a raven (!) superimposed by another artist. Why mar a beautiful painting?
Love the smell of eucalyptus so will match today’s photo with Smell Bent’s Yard Next Door. Starts off witha rush of gum tree and then is joined by foral notes ( but more florist fridge than sweet blooms). Good stuff. Busy day with an appointment at the murder house ( dentist) and then I have to teach a two -hour class! Seems a bit excessive…but interesting? Teaching medical students about fiction, and in this case short story, and asking them to write. Empathy and awareness of the patient experience, and new approaches to patient communication and understanding. It’s interesting the way the university is trying to bring humanities to science , trying to work with the typical A+ medical student to get them thinking beyond text books and bullet points. They have to study Edith Pearlman Inbound today.
oh! What an interesting way to nudge medics towards a different way of thinking about communication. Hope it goes/went well!
p.s. here’s a rather wonderful painting of doctors:
https://www.nationalgalleries.org/art-and-artists/65127/three-oncologists-professor-rj-steele-professor-sir-alfred-cuschieri-and-professor-sir-david-p-lane
Great painting…oncologists crossed with Dr Who
Have you read Kitchen Table Wisdom by Dr. Rachel Naomi Remen? I found it fascinating, she has all kinds of stories about her work with cancer patients. One of the few books I have read multiple times.
Thanks very much. That’s very helpful
I have a friend in Boston who is a philosopher and she has participated in similar projects with medical students, taking them to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts to talk about portraits, attempting in a similar way to encourage empathy.
It was a great class, all the students were very open and all are trying to write a short story as well as read medically themed fiction. It was interesting what came up in the class and how they responded.
How interesting!
It was!
Murder house. 🙂
All kids used to call the dental clinic ‘the murder house’ when I was young. The same kids who also thought the dentist had drilled through their tongue etc.
Those Trees are so cool – I’ll have to make a point to go see them sometime since I am in San Diego!
Today is Atelier Oolong Infini, paired with Lichtenstein’s Landscape with Philosopher. https://igetitart.com/2012/06/15/optic/roy-lichtenstein-landscape-with-philosopher-1996/
I love Lichtenstein’s work and I was lucky enough to see the exhibit (at the Freer, same as yesterday’s) of all his “Landscapes in the Chinese Style,” as he did a whole series of these. I was so taken, I bought the print I linked to at the museum shop and got it matted – too cheap to get it fully framed 😉
Cool! I’m going to wear Oolang Infini then stare at the dots. 😀
I almost wore that one today. You smell lovely!
Tauer L’Eau today. And now heading for a nap…
Hope it was a fantastic nap — I am jealous all these hours later!
Wearing JM Jasmine & Magnolia and thinking about my favourite painting, L’École de Platon (The School of Plato) which hangs in the Musée d’Orsay in Paris. It is huge, takes up a whole wall. Whenever I go to Paris I spend time visiting it, sitting on the floor and taking it all in for 15-20 minutes.
Yay for Musée d’Orsay! Someday I would like to visit there alone. Then I could take my time and savor what most appeals to me.
SCENT ALERT for those in the DC area: on the west side of the Sackler Gallery, next to the Freer, there is a passageway between the two buildings that the Smithsonian lines with large potted plants from their greenhouses every summer. Last weekend there was a small ylang ylang tree in bloom!
It was small enough that one of the branches was within reach and one could sniff and examine the flowers closely. What a wonderful scent!
I bought some ylang ylang essential oil last year and have been trying to figure out what to dilute it with. I’ve decided to experiment with adding it to small decants of perfumes from my collection that are a bit boring. My reasoning is that I’m not going to use very much of them as they are, and the fixatives might help the ylang fragrance last longer. We’ll see if this works or not.
See the Black Narcissus post “The Ylang Ylang Terrorist” for the origins of my new pastime:
https://theblacknarcissus.com/2015/01/27/the-ylang-ylang-terrorist/
The artwork? Perhaps something from Marina Amaral’s Color of Time series:
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DPGMXXoXkAEURQl.jpg
Thanks for the link. Please report on the results of your terrorist attacks. ????
???? Will do!
A little change of direction for some evening writing: Bandit. For me, this is not biker-warrior-princess-dominatrix, it’s either John Singer Sargent’s Madame X or the 1923 self portrait by Romaine Brookes https://americanart.si.edu/artwork/self-portrait-2916
There’s a good piece in the NYT about her by Holland Cotter, who wrote this about that particular painting:
“Alert, glittering, self-possessed… she’s watching you before you get close enough to look at her. She’s not passively inviting your approach; she’s deciding whether you’re worth bothering with. Chances are, you’re not, at least not if you’re approaching with the conventional notions of what male and female mean.”
Scary lady!
He/She/It is a little scary and unsettling, but also fascinating to try and decipher!I love provocative art like that.
I can’t stop staring at this portrait.
Ridiculously hot weather for May in my locale. However, it’s supposed to violently break this evening, so there are Severe Thunderstorm Watches posted. If this is what summer is going to be like, it’s going to be Stinking Hot!
SOTD = Berdoues Assam of India, from the sample stash. It smells like iced tea with lemon to me. The kind you get at a diner. So the art to go with it is:

Perfect
Thanks! ????
hi, twin! You smell great.
Very cool choice of painting. There are similar colors in what we paired with Assam of India. 😀
I noticed that, too! Kind of interesting…
Classic!
Your match was, too!
I really like both – the picture and perfume.
Thank you Undina!
We had quite a storm…sky was a very weird shade of yellow for a bit.
I don’t have a pairing with a painting today. I’m again wearing some of the Nez a Nez Bal Musque that I got for a good price the other day because the store is discontinuing the line. I suppose I could find some kind of Watteu-esque weird ball scene that would go with it… but I’m a bit too lazy to look. Today when I sprayed it on was the first time I noticed how strong a note the licorice in it is. Ordinarily I hate that smell, but somehow here it works.
Jolie Madame!
I’m wearing Blumarine II, from the fragrance museum. Yowza, but this one is sweet. The bottle is elegant, though.
Just home from work. Another crazy day, so it’s good that I picked up my evil bay acquisition.. 2 tester bottles of Shalimar edt – they are vintage; I will have to investigate how old they actually are.
I tried one spritz on each arm from both bottles as a test. Wow, OMG! So amazing, the juice seems like it’s in perfect condition.
Yay for your eBay Shalimar. Coming home to a vintage eBay perfume acquisition is a good day. 🙂
