Tuesday scent of the day 5/8

Posted by Robin on 8 May 2018 280 Comments

Tuesday! Plus, Iris Day and World Red Cross Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

Me: Atelier Cologne Iris Rebelle. I am out of town, so tea this morning is bad hotel coffee.

Reminder: 5/11 will be Musk Friday...you know what to do!

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Gorgeous. And there are more colors and shapes. I made the mistake of doing a google image search. A friendly warning to anyone who is a teapot collector (or reformed teapot addict like me): don’t go down that rabbit hole!

I thought there was a sameness to many of the looks: there were the attention- seeking outfits ( wings, head-dress and trains), the Versaces, the warriors/joan of Arcs, and then a few beautifully crafted: Sistine chapel dress, garden of eden dress….weirdly there seemed to be an absence of soul, somehow?

Religion is a bit of a tricky theme. Being daring without being offensive. My guess is Donatella wanted to dress as many people as possible being a co chair. But Versace cuts a stunning gown. Prabal Gurung dressed quite a few women and they were all winners. Diane Kruger was STUNNING. I could ramble on for ever.

Robin, bad hotel coffee has got to better than bad hotel tea! Always it is the cheapest 3 cents a bag stuff that is worse than grass clippings. even at nice places. Tea renaissance has not hit yet.

In a tepid defense of hotel tea, sometimes they are up to at least the Stash level. They are also more palatable if you run the coffee/tea maker a couple of times just with water…

Lovetosmellgood: I fell in love with 101 Red the moment I saw it. It’s a fabulous universal red, can be applied heavily for a dramatic look of sheer like a lip stain, it’s cruelty free too.
I have a few other colors, 102, 103, 201 – the longevity is fantastic, plus it looks so cool when you pull it out of your purse! But I doubt it’d make it through airport security! :)

I used to use a lot of Ellis Faas cosmetics (foundation, eye colors) and can vouch for them (though they’re a bit tricky due to the packaging.) Her blushes are still my summer go-tos and I’ve repurchased almost all the shades over the years. I’ve got the 101 lipstick in my purse at all times as a fall-back. If I forget to pack a lipstick, it’s there.

Will also add that if one is in the market for long-wearing makeup, look no further than her eye colors and blush. They will easily get you through a 12-hr day without creasing, smudging, fading.

Oh, and my new fragrant obsession is Blackbird incense cones. I haven’t burned incense in ages but they were burning it in a shop in my neighborhood and it smelled sooo good I had to buy the sampler pack. So far, Ploom (gardenia, tonka, tobacco) and Gorgo (“wood bouquet” and beeswax) are my faves. I may need full supply of these.

It’s a bit sweet, but the gardenia adds a little bit of cool to it. It’s a nice combo.

I love their incense cones too. I actually worked at Blackbird Apothecary for a month soon after I moved to Seattle. They decided to close the stores though (men’s clothes and apothecary) and move to online only. But we burned incense right outside the store to pull people in, and that was my introduction to how great their incense is. I have 10 tins of it! I have been on a candle streak lately, but I need to remember to burn incense too. I have plenty of it!

10 tins! Lucky you! What’s your favorite? I usually only use candles and stopped burning incense because it tends to embed in rugs/fabric making it linger, especially the more resinous ones, so I’m using them sparingly.

The EdP is richer with more vanilla and a banana notes that amplifies the jasmine. The EdT is sharper and greener and the tiare is more pronounced, at least on me. I have the EdT now and like it more. It has that tropical flower feeling that I enjoy more.

SotD = Caleche EdT from a vintage decant shared by a marvelous NST perfumista!

    LOVE. THIS. STUFF.

I was woken in the wee, small hours of the morning when I heard our three pet birds shuffling about in their cages. The birds knew something was up, and a minute later the ground started to gently shake. Magnitude 4.5, so I guess mother nature is happy spring is here.

Knowing I would not go back to sleep, I caught up on my email then read Angela’s review of Caleche. I remembered the decant waiting in my high priority testing box, so I dabbed some on my wrist and arm. Swoon! Did I mention I love this perfume? The lemon and dryness remind me of my beloved Assam of India. But Assam of India is just a sip of water in comparison, Caleche is a bubbling river of fragrance.

In a veritable cloud of Le Temps d’une Fete today. Must take Gaze to the eye doctor for his yearly checkup… that’ll eat up all afternoon, pretty much. Appointment will last one to one and a half hours since he has contacts as well as glasses, plus an hour’s drive each way.

In other news, I just put up a page at the blog showing which vintage minis in excellent shape I am selling there. (The less desirable ones are going straight to eBay.) I really want to find good homes for these in particular since they are in excellent shape in terms of their scent. You can’t count on that with vintage.

I tested Caleche myself last night, after reading Angela’s review! It’s NOT a bedtime perfume though. It’s for a night out filled with dancing, champagne on ice and a guilded carriage to take me home.Lol.That aldehyde blast of an opening though!I did not get the tobacco note someone mentioned, but I was glad iris showed up.I could still smell it on my wrist when I got up this AM.

Thank you johanob, I am grateful that when the earth moved everything else stayed in place.

Agree! Caleche would keep me wide-eyed if worn late at night. I enjoyed it this morning and can still smell the little dabs quite well. I will spritz more later today to get the full-on whoosh of the top notes.

Ahh, so you do get the lemon? I have somehow never noticed it. I’ll have to look out for it next time.

It has a crisp-starched white shirt thing going on, too, it just occurs to me. In the same category as White Linen and Rive Gauche? I don’t have access to any of the above right now, so I may be totally off track. But all lovely summer fare, to be sure.

SO MUCH LEMON, I love it. Though maybe that is because I took the sprayer off and dabbed. I will try Caleche spritzed this afternoon. If I get a different experience I will let you know. :D

Have not smelled White Linen in probably 20 years. Back then it was all nose-burning aldehydes for me. I should look for a tester bottle, I imagine it has changed. And I say yes to the Rive Gauche connection, the two scents could be cousins. :D

Decades ago, when I often bought makeup at department stores, I had so many White Linen minis. I gave them away because I couldn’t wear it. I sometimes wish I had saved one, but truth be told, I think there is a chance the current version might work better for me. Noses are funny!

I am not a great fan of linden, but I haven’t had much experience with it. We’ll see how I like it. This is another of my untried samples, so one more tried.

I tried Iris Rebelle recently and might just end up with a travel spray.

For today, I’m kickin’ it ’80s style with some Jovan Musk, which I got at Walgreen’s for a whole $2. My mom is partial to white musks, so this really makes me think of her. She has started wearing Oscar de la Renta again recently, though. She didn’t wear it for a long time. I have some too, but I like it better on her than on me.

My mom used to wear Jovan Musk for Women as her “everyday” scent, for wearing to the grocery store or the library (as opposed to No. 5 for dressed-up occasions). I bought her a new bottle recently, but she returned it to me saying that it didn’t smell like it used to, and she must have had a change to her skin chemistry. It still smelled nice to me, but she said she didn’t like it on her anymore.

Happy day all! ????warm as it is today I’ll probably wear Un Jardin Sur la Nil again. Gonna be a busy one, getting the house in order and packing. I leave in the morning on a short trip with my husband to California! My first trip there!???? Which leads me to some burning questions. I’ve been sampling Hermes Eau de Merveilles and I really like it a lot. As it fills a gap in my scent wardrobe, and most importantly doesn’t send my poor husband into a hay fever attack I plan to make a full bottle purchase of it. I’m tempted to see if the airport will have a better price than the local Sephora shop. $110 for the small one. So:
Dose anyone have any tips or advice about shopping in the airport?
    Is it really more affordable?
And should I be wary of knockoffs or fakes?
We’re leaving out of Will Rogers world airport with a layover in Phoenix before reaching LAX,the return layover is in los Vegas.
I would like to have it on my trip to form a good scent memory but if need be I can plan to get it on the way back. Why I haven’t posted this earlier I can only blame on chronic scatterbrained. ????
Any advice would be most humbly and greatly appreciated!

Prices in airports are not better – unless you’re going abroad. Then, maybe, on some products, you can get a slightly better price (because of no tax), but they usually have the largest possible bottles of perfumes.
      Enjoy your trip!

Wearing my sample of one of the new releases from DSH Perfumes, the beautiful Je Suis la Lune. It is predominantly a lovely, fresh, very milky, and non-indolic (hurray) jasmine in the opening; slightly tropical, but with no coconut notes at all. It also has a pretty champaca note that keeps the jasmine from soaring too high. The later drydown is a rich, stunning, creamy sandalwood.

I am regretting trying this one at the very end of my visit to Dawn’s studio this weekend – I put it off because jasmine is rarely a note that I find personally wearable – as I didn’t realize until the drive home how truly gorgeous it is. It is a perfect spring fragrance, and I’m going to have to go back to pick up a 10 ml edp, at the very least.

Yesterday was jury selection for me. Tense day.

I was not in the group that got sent home right away. D**n.

I was in the first group of 18 that got called for questioning by the lawyers. D**n.

Sat thru 3 hours of questions. D**n.

Got rejected by the defense lawyers. YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

I’d have done my duty if I’d been picked, but dang y’all, I am sure glad to pass on this experience, because the case was a *gang murder*.

I am very happy to be back to my normal quiet boring life.

SOTD is YSL Champagne, of course!

Congratulations! I was in a similar situation years ago – #18. I was tossed by both…in fact, I was in a group that the judge dismissed. A week later I ended up on a civil case.

For a different take on white musk than yesterday’s Candy Kiss, I’m doused in Sylvaine Delacourte Lilylang. It’s the only of her musk collection that I connected with. Gosh, it’s just lovely, and now I want to go to the beach and spend the day in the sun. The description on her website likens it to sand and skin touched by the sun, and yes, that’s exactly it.

I have and enjoy her Florentina, and this one is next on my wishlist from her. I thought her first series was very nicely executed. Her new vanilla series – non-foody, yay! – looks promising.

Ooh I didn’t know about the new vanilla series.

So if you buy directly from the brand’s website you can buy in travel size custom packs starting at two 7.5ml sprays for $35 USD. I’m not sure of the shipping charge though. I’m quite tempted to go for it after I finish my sample. Lilylang wears so close to the skin that it’s perfect for the office.

I am wearing Christian Dior Miss Dior Originale. I was catching up on a few “Call The Midwife” episodes last night, and Trixie was given a wrapped gift box that contains a bottle of this from her boyfriend. She says Christian Dior, when he had this scent commissioned, wanted to “create a fragrance that’s like love”. Gotta love Trixie. And this fragrance :)

Aw zut, if I had known it is Iris Day today, I would’ve worn Iris Rebelle, too. (I finally caved and got that Atelier Cologne sampler from Sephora during their 10 % off sale a couple weeks ago. It’s quite a good deal if you don’t think you’ll need more than 4 mL of any of those scents! And I don’t think I will.)

What I am wearing is Guerlain Baiser de Russie. I can’t really smell the musk in it, but it’s in the note list on Fragrantica! The weather is heating up, and in a week or two, I won’t want to wear these luscious gourmands, so I had better wear them while I still can.

Work has been exhausting lately. Tons of daily meetings, super-tight turnaround times, not quite enough time to breathe. AND my vocal group will have its spring show in less than two weeks, and we are most definitely not ready for it. Looking forward to June!

I think musk can be quite confusing because there are clean musks ( laundry powder) like Body Shop White Musk and then dirty/sweaty animal musks which are probably the true musks. Musc Nomade was recommended to me by several people on NST when I was curious about the note.

Well, Jovan Musk for Women is nice, and it’s not expensive, so that’s a pretty good way to spend $5. (My mom used to wear it a lot. :) )

I have three categories for musk: laundry musk, skin musk, and filthy musk. The Jovan Musk for women I’d call a skin musk, but their White Musk is a laundry one and I don’t like it. Musc Ravageur sits somewhere between “skin” and “filthy.”

We’ve just bought a high definition TV and I watched the China Syndrome (1979) yesterday and became fixated on the colour of the actors’ teeth. They were so natural looking: off-white and uneven, and stains for the smokers. A variety of lip shapes, too. Followed the film up with a flick through the Met Gala looks which left me feeling a bit flat.
Wearing Gypsy and off to walk dogs. Had a lucky walk yesterday as six rabbits presented their white tails within the first two minutes and I didn’t see the dogs again until 20 minutes later. Later I saw a Brown Creeper…a tiny brown bird with a needle-like call that ‘creeps’ up tree trunks. Very special.
Hope your trip recovers from the hotel coffee Robin! You seem to be having a bit of an unsettling time this past month so sending you my best…and treat yourself to a nice cup of tea and a good book later.

I tend to fixate on visuals in movies, too, sometimes to the exclusion of everything else. You’ve now got me wondering if the 70s is the only era of American film where one would see imperfect teeth.

Interesting! I have recently been feeling very nostalgic for the 70’s and was YouTubeing a bunch of movies/tv series/commercials (too much time on my hands, it would seem) and I noticed not only the teeth issue, but hair as well. I think all the styling products must have been developed and widely used post 70’s. I love it! I find people more attractive and approachable when they are more human looking vs. looking like something not entirely human, if that makes sense. I love portrait photography of older people because the face and eyes are so much more human, real and somehow relatable. Or maybe I’m just weird. I read a quote the other day that I just love: If the whole world was blind, who would you impress?

Sycomore today, which, every time I type it makes me wince a little with that horrible misspelling. Fortunately, the scent is good enough that I can live with that. A friend says it smells like wet cardboard, but that’s GOOOOOOD wet cardboard, she assures me, and asks for little decants so she can sniff it happily. Not that she’d wear it.

By lunchtime, though, I had to resort to an emergency dab of “what is the strongest scent I have in bag or desk, oh, cool, PoAL”. Right under my nose, because, dear bob, but one of my colleagues was stinky today. It was that or tiger balm.

also: many sympathies on the hotel coffee, Robin. This is why I always travel with an aeropress. But then, all UK hotels, and pretty much everywhere it seems other than the US has a kettle in every hotel room…

Nice, the perfume and cold, not so much the rain!

    Nice teapot!

Woohoo! I matched Iris Day by coincidence!

PSA: Ebates was offering 14% cash back to many stores and I took full advantage of that, my $50 off $250 purchase and a fabulous Estée Lauder GWP at Saks!

    Commuting Woes No. 429:

This was right in my own backyard! I’m glad I gave myself plenty of time to get to the train station this morning. My usual route is a distance of a little over 2 miles and could take anywhere from 6-9 minutes depending upon traffic lights.

The main road was being repaved but there was no notice of road closures. Within half a mile of leaving my house, I was greeted with the road closure. I had to make a huge loop, entered and exited 2 highways and the whole thing set me back almost 10 minutes and an extra 5 miles! Needless to say, I was not a happy camper but I pitied more the people who went over a mile to find out they have no place to turnaround except to go north (good if they were going that direction but if they were going to the train station, their detour north would have been almost double mine, with only one highway and a main road with 8 traffic lights in a 1 mile stretch!

Oh no on your road closures! Good thing you had some extra time built into your commute this morning… that could have fouled things up so much. What were they thinking of, not giving any advance notice??

They weren’t thinking at all is the problem. I need to be prepared for tomorrow as well seeing how the road is all ripped up on my drive home!

Hope they finish repaving quickly. Besides the extra time, the bits of gravel and tar stick to your car and make it filthy.
          You smell lovely today!

Today I’m wearing ca. 1990 Yardley English Spring Flowers to complement the extremely vintage Yardley Spring Flowers soap (ca. 1965?) I showered with this morning. It’s going to be “my thing” until I use up the soap. Also wearing Revlon’s Cherries In the Snow, ’cause it’s flowering tree season, yay!
