Monday scent of the day 5/7

Posted by Robin on 7 May 2018 313 Comments

Monday! Plus, Loves Baby Soft Day, apparently. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in a dab of Ellie D's Ellie, because Mary Carol mentioned it over the weekend. My supply has seen better days, though, and I might have to top it off with something later.

Reminder: 5/11 will be Musk Friday...you know what to do!

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

There is a You Tube review by Lola Scents..(may be all one word). She was disappointed that it was too far from the original. YMMV.

Oh, I definitely think scents can be described as sexy. I had dinner the other day with a former boss, and asked him if he remembered what scent his late wife wore. He got kind of dreamy-eyed and said, “Oh yes, absolutely.” Turned out she wore Shalimar extrait, and to him it smells very sexy.

Lol for Loves Baby Soft Day. I remember a cloud of LBS hanging over the high school mean girls table.

I am in Monserrat by Bruno Fazzolari for an unofficial Fazzolari week in anticipation of receiving my bottle of Unsettled. My own personal Fannolari Week.

I think that’s why I’ve never had any desire to wear it- because of the association that I have with it. I was more of a reserved/ observer in high school. My signature scent was the original Lauren in the beautiful red bottle. I wish I had hung onto some, what is on the shelves today is not even a shadow of what it once was.

My one HS scent that I don’t want to go near is Amarige. For two years, I was sitting next to this girl who must have showered in it or something. Had I known her better, I would have said something, but we weren’t really friends – what with the impenetrable Amarige Force Shield and so on. I wore Calyx which lasted about an hour or two and was no match for her.

I want to do Musk Week, though I’ll probably wear lighter floral musks, not super animalic musks.
SOTD is FM Dans Tes Bras. Violet, pine, musk. Musk here is slightly dirty (but mot much) – a bit of sweaty skin effect. It’s a strange scent – cool floral and warm spicy musky at the same time.

I loved sniffing it from the sprayer, but not so thrilled about how it transforms on my skin either. Maybe it’s one of the scents I’d rather smell on someone else.

I have only ever dabbed it. I swear it could be a deep love. I’m just not sure how to get there. It feels to me like one of those optical illusions that you have to relax your eyes to see, and then the second you do see it, you lose it again. In those moments when I “see” it, it’s out of this world good. But then I can’t seem to get there again.

I still really like that one. It is a little weird and polarizing though, and probably why I never invested in more than my sample. Something very sensual about it.

Now I see what you all, especially lizbee, mean. After my previous comment I went out. It was a windy day and suddenly a gust of wind brought a lovely scent of violets. First I did not even realize that it was DTB. This perfume is a shape-shifter.

I’m joining Scott–well, in spirit anyway, and wearing my sample of Monserrat. Fannolaris unite!

Questions for anyone who has shipped perfume from Canada to the U.S.:
Can you do so legally and how? Like, is there some kind of UPS ground shipping allowed?
Does it cost an arm and a leg?
    Thanks!

I mailed lots of perfume packages to U.S.
On the custom form, I write used cosmetics, gift and no commercial value, I never had any problems (air mail)
It costs less then sending in Canada.

The other day I tried pairing Tom Ford Venetian Bergamot with Robert Piguet Bandit. Shouldn’t work on paper but I kind of liked it. Mentioned to a work colleague that maybe I had too much “cologne” on…..but got a thumbs up. Going to work this layer combination all week as Florida starts to warm up. Happy Monday everyone!

I’m doing a week of untouched samples. I have a lot of samples that I’ve never tried, both as free samples from purchases, and from generous NSTers from freebiemeets and swapmeets. Today I am wearing Lubin Black Jade.

Sotd is Rouge Malachite from a sample. I had read one review that said it smelled like Alien essence absolue. At that price? No way, i thought, but guess what? Yes way. They are very similar. I also feel the need to say I actually had to go to the window, hold the sample up to the light and squint to actually see what i was sampling. I’m getting so old. Sigh….

Yeah, I can barely read stuff now. (I HAVE glasses… but the bifocal part is so small, and the other part of the prescription is so slight, that I hardly ever wear them. I spend most of the day in cheapie drugstore readers.)

My prescription is for bifocals, I just haven’t gotten them yet. I should try the readers.

The readers are certainly cheaper and easier to adjust to I think. Still, it’s a PITA, especially if your continually changing distances while working.

Ah yes, I remember poking fun at my parents for wearing those Walgreens readers. Turns out, the joke was on me because I too succumbed to wearing a pair of low strength glasses a few years ago.

Well, probably the odd gal out here, but I find getting older incredibly liberating. I don’t like the creaky joints, the failing vision, and the other physical manifestations of aging, but I love everything else about it. I’m fully appreciating every day of continence and mental acuity, because one day, those too will be gone. I’m happy with who I am and the tiny little space I take up on this planet. If I kick it tomorrow, I think I’d be okay. ✌????

It is liberating, in the sense that I am a better “me” now, and am much better at recognizing what’s important. It’s the physical changes that make it hard though.

I’m mostly with you – I think I’m more content now than in my 20ies and perhaps 30ies- but find it super annoying that when I’ve finally found contact lenses I can tolerate somewhat, I can’t see properly with them because of the bifocal thing!

        • Deva says:
          7 May 2018 at 2:02 pm

I skipped the bifocal thing. I have an IOL in my right eye to focus on mid/far distance, w/ a contact lens to boot. Left eye has just a contact for far distance. Can’t see squat within 2.5 feet of the old eyeballs. Cheapie readers help for up close, but it’s a constant struggle to get things focused in both eyes. But, I’m grateful to have functional vision since I was originally misdiagnosed with a branch occlusion in my right eye. ????

Yikes! So my complaints are pretty superficial, at any rate…
I’m vain enough still to care that I look way different without glasses. To the extent that people who don’t know me well will usually do a double take when they see me without them. But a combo of dry eyes and thin corneas meant that surgery is out of the question, and most contacts are out, too. And during our last choir concert, I realized that I cannot actually read the sheet music all that well with contacts…

          • mals86 says:
            7 May 2018 at 3:15 pm

About the only time I DO use my bifocals is during choir practice/concerts: down at the sheet music, up at the director, repeat. 😀

I just started putting a bunch of my mini bottles up for sale on ebay last night and will continue over the next few days. Several of these will be vintage things… I hope I know what I’m doing. A friend offered to sell me her “nice but I don’t love it” partial bottle, and then another friend gave me a partial 1-oz, and I bought two more big refo’ed ones before it bit the dust. So glad to have them, because nothing else smells like it to me.

I decided over the weekend to go back and check out more of the Body Shop fragrances I had found at Marshall’s. I went in TJ Maxx and found them there too, so I picked up Nigritella and Kahaia (which the Marshall’s I went to didn’t have). I mean, $9 each so why not, right? I am wearing Kahaia today. At home for the bank holiday, and doing battle with database design Aye, me and my wild party life. So, free to wear a favourite gorgeous filthy skank bomb: Theo Fennell’s Scent. And I am wallowing in the lovely warm saffron-rose and chirrupping back to my sock-hunting small cat to prevent myself banging my head against the desk while untangling my primary keys from my foreign keys.

It’s making my thesis outline writing look like more fun though, so there’s a plus side.

Starting the week in white musk, orange blossom, vanilla, and white cotton – Prada Candy Kiss. Planning to finish up my sample when I reapply later. I think it’s a good cheaper option for those who love Guerlain Mon Precieux Nectar. Warning: the white musk is SUPER long lasting.

My friend gave me a bottle of Love’s Baby Soft because she had an extra, and I’ve been using it as room spray. I’ll wear it on me one of the days or nights this week.

I would not have seeked it out to try because the name is so goofy, but I got a sample as an extra in a swap or purchase. I’m glad I was able to try it.

Another perfume I can compare it to is Ego Facto Poopoo Pidoo.

In OJ Frangipani this morning – a pretty floral, I think OJ has a very strong signature in all their floral scents, but this one I like a lot better than Tiare or Osmanthus. I’m looking forward to a normal work week – we had a big PTSA fundraiser/gala thing this past weekend, and I was so stressed out about it – but it turned out to be a fantastic party, though perhaps not as fantastic a fundraiser (lots of rookie mistakes, this was a first for us). Happy Monday!

    HiA l! Late to this:

    1) SOTD; I found Tramp shower gel in a suitcase (how OLD is this????) and so I am in that after a much needed morning shower.

    2) The reason I found it in a suitcase: There was a fire in my neighbor’s garage, on the opposite side of the firewall hat connects the two structures- so the suitcase was my emergency preparedness bag. This was on Saturday, after I had did a pro/con spreadsheet to determine whether I should do a cash out FHA refinance or apply for a HELOC. Man propose, and G-d dispose…
No VISIBLE damage to my structure, but I stayed home today and spoke to my insurance company, who advised getting an inspection within their network.
Add to all this: The owner is on vacation in Las Vegas- but has a boneheaded housemate WHO DID NOT HAVE A PHONE, so it was I and neighbors across the way who called Portland F&R (big ups to the firepersons on staff).

Tomorrow, back to work, but my nerves are rattled, for sure!

      HOW is that Tramp Showergel?
When I packed up the farmhouse last year,I discovered Coty Mazumi powder, pristine and still in its box, untouched.I gifted that to my grandmother around 1987,she passed in ‘89.It still smells wonderful.I decided to use it up.She used the perfume that came with it so I know she loved the scent.

What a nice photo, as always! I need a leap out of bed and take the dogs for a walk perfume . It’s not cold but it is dark and the sun is still an hour away and I’ve been having ‘issues’ with Sprocket the pinecone OCD dog recently as he barks at me to throw something but when I do he can’t find it because it’s too dark and then I have to grovel around in the bushes hunting for the pinecone while he nuts off . …just chill, already! It’s rather tedious . Okay…get up! Yard next door for me. I have no idea what Loves Baby Soft is but it sounds like something I need

LBS is a tween perfume. Some kids have it for their first perfume. I think I had a bottle in junior high school. It’s an inexpensive soft floral baby powdery fragrance usually found in drug stores.

Yesterday was my 23rd wedding anniversary… hence, the ribs for dinner. The smoke was not overpowering, and I didn’t overseason them. However, Mr. Jalapeno and I are split on whether the ribs needed a little more time. Will need to eat more ribs to get a better idea about that. ???? I had a really nice beer to go with them, and life was pretty darn nice.

SOTD = SJP Covet, from the sample stash, and a lovely NSTer. This has lemon, some herbs, a bit of unsweetened chocolate, and a touch of musk to my nose. Perfect for the finally seasonal weather in my part of the world.

Thank you, johanob! It is, in many ways, a lifetime. A complete sea change from what was before. On the other hand, I had a few aunts and uncles who were fortunate enough to celebrate their 50th anniversaries before they passed on.

Happy anniversary to you! I hope someday to celebrate a 23rd anniversary, but whether I do or not, I am glad to be happily married.

Happy anniversary and many more! The ribs sound great. We haven’t invested in a smoker yet, but I’m sure my husband will (he does all the meat cooking).

Thank you, Elisa P! There is a way to smoke ribs on a grill via the indirect cooking method. I think Alton Brown did an episode of Good Eats about that. I will say that if you have the room for it, a dedicated smoker is a nice thing to have on one’s deck or patio.

Beautiful sunny day, Creed Jasmine Imperatrice Eugenie. Every time I wear it I confirm to myself that it was a good decision to get this bottle for my collection – I enjoy it very much.

Turin and Sanchez were so scathing in their review of Love in White that it frightened me away from trying any Creeds (well, that and the prices…) in my early days of perfume mania. I’ve since learned that I often disagree with T & S, so I think I should seek out some Creeds to try. The name of yours — Imperatrice Eugenie — sounds lovely…

Chiming in to say Spring Flower and Fleurissimo are my faves. I have a decant of Aventus for Her, not sure if I like it. And I have a decant of Love in White heading my way. What did Luca and Tania say about Love in White?

I believe Luca said he’d rather have lice than wear Love in White. 😀

You reminded me: I have tried Aventus for Her, and don’t like it.

Is Fleurissimo the one that was created for Princess Grace of Monaco? I definitely should try that some time.

Hahaha oh no! Well hmmm… lice huh.
Yes you are correct about the Fleurissimo and the Princess Grace connection. I’ve read that.

Since I do not pass the official judgement on perfumes but buy them to wear, I do not really care what any “authority” think about those perfumes that I like (well, unless those are people subjected to me wearing said perfumes – then I would consider personal preferences 🙂 ).
Most Creed perfumes that I tried didn’t move me enough (and those prices are steep!) but this one was really nice on me, and I found it at a good discount.

A salty saffron rose leather sounds lovely. I sometimes have problems with salty notes, though.

I tried out Zadig & Voltaire’s This is Her! today, courtesy of a lovely NSTer. I’m chagrined: when I sprayed it, I thought Fruity Floral. Turns out Fragrantica classifies it as a gourmand Vanilla Oriental. Clearly, my nose is broken, and I have absolutely no cred as a perfumista. Sigh.

Sometimes I think Frangrantica’s classifications for scents are way off base. Trust your nose. ???? ????
