Thursday scent of the day 4/26

Posted by Robin on 26 April 2018 211 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday and happy Alien Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Thierry Mugler Angel Muse, very lightly, by perfumer Quentin Bisch (shown above).

Reminder: 4/27 will be Next Generation Friday...wear something from a younger perfumer.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I am wearing Terroni by Orto Parisi from a sample. Nice smoky/earthy scent, even with that synthetic feel.

Wearing Prada Iris ( Original formulation) by perfumer Daniela Roche-Andrier.
This is a favourite office scent of mine – powder, iris and a good dash of citrus. I smell neat, polite, professional, and really good.

I misspoke – I had meant to type that I had the original Infusion d’Iris, and not the 2015 revamp. The bottle I am wearing has a balsam undernote I enjoy, but don’t get from the 2015 version

Robin, I think I’ll join you in Angel Muse! I haven’t win it in awhile.

I went to a book signing last night for the nicest author, Masatsugu Ono. I haven’t read his book yet (though my friend said it was one of her favorite books of last year) but we ended up talking about books for hours! I can’t wait to read it.

He’s a fascinating person. We ended up taking him out to dinner. We talked about contemporary and modern Japanese literature, and he asked us about exciting American authors. He said he is close friends with Hiromi Kawakami, another brilliant Japanese writer, and we were thrilled! We told him to bring her next time.

He’s really fascinating. He’s a literary critic, literature professor, and a French-to-Japanese translator. I can’t wait to read his book; I’ll report back.

    SotD is Ophelia, by Heeley

This was a blind buy (it was almost free), its not a love, but i really like it.

There is some white musk in it but fortunately its very soft and sheer. This is mostly a light and friendly tuberose/jasmine/water(y) lily.

These pretty white flowers do not fit the name imo. When I think of Ophelia I think of the character from Hamlet who killed herself. Not very pretty imo…

Well, i think Ophelia is fine for a perfume name!
but thinking of Hamlet (icant be the only one who makes that connection) a darker/more complex and sinister fragrance comes to mind. And this perfume is a very carefree an clean scent.

Banana is a love-hate note for me too — I don’t like when white florals smell very faintly of banana but if it’s really bright, neon yellow then I’m in.

The days are full of everything right now, with *all* the aprilness of weather (bright sun, hail, drizzle, torrential rain, wind, warm overcast, the works.) Time for something that shifts and changes just as fast: MEM.

A pleasing distraction while I’m taking sneaky slices out of my day-job work day to do a frankly terrifiying how-many-words-a-day calculation. This is to see in just how much trouble I’m going to be on my thesis deadline next year. Lots, seems to be the answer. Lots and lots.

Thanks, Kanuka! I am about to tackle a complete overhaul of my structure plan. I’ve known the old one wasn’t fitting any more… but have been fearfully avoiding that task, just trying to get writing again to gain momentum after an year-long interruption in my studies. I think the new shape might be starting to emerge. If only I could follow the traditional IMRaD for this… but, nope.

(I had the pleasure of listening to a presentation by your compatriot Helen Sword last week, who writes so incredibly well about writing.)

On day three of SL fumerie turque. I read just pure joy in Koyels bell jars captured on the Paris trip and decided to go use my own.
I must admit I smell fabulous.

My bottle of Ta’if arrived last night. Still in red package. Mmmmm.

Speaking of alien ???? my sister sent in an ancestry spit kit and we are all teasing her that this is what we will learn about her!

I recently did an Ancestry spit kit and got the results, and they contained some surprises. In addition to the expected Great Britain and Western Europe I also had some bits from Finland, Russia, the Caucasus and Scandinavia. Nobody in our family ever mentioned anything of that unusual part of family background. So now I’m intrigued and want to do some more family tree research.

One of my friends who is something of a bigot discovered that his ancestry is about half of a group he’s bigotted against. His mother had been adopted so they knew nothing of her background. Well now they do :) Surprise! Ho ho ho, life can hit the nail on the head sometimes ;)

Hey Calypso, that’s a very similar result to my older sister and I except I got the Iberian Peninsula and she got the Caucasus. I’ve enjoyed it a lot and it has piqued my interest to find out more, and just read more history in general. Our younger sister has not yet done it… we told her we both had a very small percentage of wolf ;-)

I got some Iberian! that was my wild card – im attributing it to the Spanish Armada. I would also like learning more history tho – and I think I’d like to get a different brand kit to compare the results.

I thought I would LOVE Fumerie Turque–it sounds right up my alley!–but it was a touch too heavy for me? I’m not even totally sure what I mean by that. Maybe it was because I was in a perfume shop, but I was shocked that I didn’t fall immediately in love with it.

That’s so fantastic that you’re enjoying them, Koyel. I used to wonder who would want to dab when they can spray, and then I bought BdI parfum, and I loooooove giving myself “dainty little dabs.” I can only imagine how much pleasure one can get out of a bell jar. Sigh.

I ALSO bought some BdI parfum (on the same trip during which I got my bell jars), and I ALSO looooove dabbing it daintily! And I ALSO didn’t understand why anyone would dab instead of spraying :) It really is satisfying to dab. And it makes me feel wealthy and/or grown-up!

I’m in l’Artisan Parfumeurs Histoire d’Orangers today, which is by Marie Salamagne, who is ~41 and therefore probably pretty young as perfumers go. (I’ve also been using a lot of female-made scents lately!) I hadn’t heard much about this scent, but a very kind NSTer suggested it during the swapmeet, and I jumped at the opportunity, as I can’t stop won’t stop with those fleur d’oranger scents. What, though, is the story of the orangers? What do you think they’re saying to each other? I’d be thrilled if we one day discovered that trees with strongly scented flowers and leaves were not simply saying, “Heeeeeere, pollinators! Come heeeeere!” but were also communicating to each other.

It’s really lovely. It’s pretty linear and simple? But I don’t mean that as a put-down. It’s linearly, simply beautiful. Not too far from just standing in front of an oranger and inhaling all day.

    Good morning,
I’m in a teeny back of the hand dab of Tauer’s L’air du desert marocain – I needed to know what the fuss was about because all the other Tauers I had tried were not for me – but this one, I get it! I think this is a great scent for creative work, which I sort of have to do today – I have to create some power point slides for a short presentation next week, and already the word “power point” makes my heart sink.
On another note, my Cap Neroli arrived yesterday from Twisted Lily, super fast, was supposedly backordered but not so, AND they kindly included Frangipani by Ormonde Jayne and the L’air du desert for samples even though my order was small ($40 or so after their sale discount). So nice of them!

A very good day to you, NST everywhere. My perfume today is La Pausa, for an eight hour workshop that promises frustration and …. frustration. Where do ideas like, “ Let’s have a workshop on culture and purpose,” come from? Is it a spore that floats around in the air conditioning and then lodges in senior management brains? Is it sneezed out by a carrier manager, and caught like a virus? We should develop a vaccine! It will be lots of words and coloured pens and post-it notes, and enthusiasm that will die fast in the coming onslaught of teaching and the tsunami of assignments. But here’s the good thing: I smell wonderful. Actually, I smell WONDERFUL.

BTW, I know this the wrong place to say this, but I am excited about the new Chanels. No one will be surprised by this. I know I didn’t buy Gabrielle, but I don’t dislike it. I don’t even mind the new variant on Coco, though I sometimes feel I should. I’m kinda hoping that Paris- Venise will be super. Paris-Deauville sounds rather up my street as well, in a different way.

This iPad is about to conk out, so I will stop maundering on. Be very well and happy, all, and spare a thought for me at this workshop.

You smell far, far lovelier than the workshop deserves. I hope it helps carry you through that egregious waste of good honest post-it notes and time.

(Last year I had to spend an entire day on some godawful Jung-for-beginners personality assessment thing that was meant to help us all communicate better, according to our “colour profiles”. It did, in some ways: many of us found new common ground by agreeing what a colossal load of manure it was.)

Showered, mixed Boots body butter in Almond with my regular lotion (alas, the Boots is discontinued) and sprayed on Elie Saab L’Eau Couture to feel fresh and keep with the almond theme.

Every once in a while, I get buttered popcorn from almond notes. Today is one of those days, unfortunately. I think it’s from the lotion….

SOTD is Diptyque Eau Rose. I’m enjoying my spring scents, now that it’s spring-ish. It was definitely spring at the beginning of the week (perhaps even summer-ish… warm enough for shorts). But it’s been getting steadily cooler all week. Still, spring-ish enough.

Yesterday’s SOTD was Demeter Black Ginger, which carried me thru a vet appt; it was the annual checkup for the cats, one of whom HOWLS the whole way to the vet and HOWLS in the vet’s waiting room and HOWLS the whole way home. Yeesh Kooky, Chill Out Furry Dude!

Our cat was once at the vet’s overnight, and when my husband went in the next day he heard the most horrible howling, like a cat that had been run over. He asked the receptionist if everything was OK, and she replied “Yeah, that’s just your cat. She’s fine, but soooo loud.”

He was so embarrassed he’s refused to take the cat to the vet ever since. Now it’s my job.

Yeah last time I had to leave Kooky there, I could hear him howling as soon as I walked in the door. The vet tech said, “Don’t believe the lies he’s telling you, we were very nice to him.” I promised her that I was certain he was lying!

Way back when my sister was in the hospital to give birth to her second child, I babysat my then 2 year old niece. She kept pining for my sister and BIL. My dad then had the brilliant idea of calling their house to get the answering machine where the greeting was recorded by my BIL. The change in my niece was quite profound, even though she kept wondering why her daddy was not answering her questions.

I can remember travelling on domestic flight with my dog. She was in the hold and all through the flight (only one hour, thank goodness) there was a constant barking and howling coming up through the floor. It was excruciating as everyone could hear her…talk about the walk of shame at the baggage carousel at the end.

I seem to be going through a perfume happy ‘what the hell give it a go’ phase of experimentation…Best discovery is Bois de Vanille layered over Gabrielle , really good ( adds volume ).
Bapteme du Feu with Kenzo Jungle …well, you can imagine how that circus works.
Interlude with Tango …young perfumers on a wild night out, getting home as dawn breaks.
A la nuit and Coco and Ambre des Merveilles…the morning after, did I really do that??!!! Eugh.

Sensible shoes today: Monsieur Li. I might add yellow, Leau Mohell, for a bit of up and over energy.

SotD = Hendley Perfumes Auric from a sample

Hey, another one with patchouli + cacao. That makes three I’ve worn this week. The florals were quite pretty, now the sandalwood is prominent. Smells fancy. When I received the samples I ordered, a hand-written note from Mr. Hendley was enclosed. Very nice.

I just ate my last piece of dark chocolate marzipan candy from Aldi, boo hoo. So yummy, I will buy them again when they next appear, probably in late autumn. Sending a virtual “haaallloooo” out to perfume friend chocolatemarzipan8!

I ordered samples from Hendley a while back, I guess it was last year, wish I could remember better. :D

The two samples I have left are Gia and Auric. I like them both very much, they smell like the really goooood stuff was used to make them. Nothing harsh or prickly to my nose, just loveliness.

An evening update, doused in the new Santal Noir from the Dior privee collection. It seems like it’s an easy, comfortable wear: nothing that will shock the world, but that’s not what this line is about. Sweeter than my usual taste–very smooth, perhaps something like Santal Majascule with tonka beans in its pockets? My on-paper sniff of Purple Oud, however, just seemed a bit apologetic and defanged. I couldn’t get any of the saffron from it

Thanks for the update! I’ve tried Jasmin des Anges (rather like J’Adore; I presume the ingredients are higher end, but the duration is shorter) and Balade Sauvage (fig!). Looking forward to trying the rest. I generally get along well with this collection’s aesthetic.

I’m wearing Yann Vasnier’s lovely L’âme sœur. He is quite young still so I’m kind of on this week’s theme.

Bright sunshine here today… a REAL spring day! Lots of people mowing their lawns before the next bout of rain comes thru. ????

SOTD = Bottega Veneta Knot, from the sample stash. A very springlike scent to match the day. It’s a pretty one, too.

Vacation in San Diego day 3, wearing the light, pleasant enough, and boring English Pear & Freesia. I original sprayed an old decanted sample of White Jasmine & Mint, but it smelled off so I covered it up with the Pear & Freesia. I’ll wear something better to dinner later. We’re going to Juniper & Ivy, one of Richard Blais’s restaurants (any Top Chef fans?). Last night we are at his casual fried chicken place next door, The Crack Shack. As we were walking in, I spotted Blais himself outside Juniper & Ivy tasting something. I definitely nerded out and stared! I hope he’ll be in the kitchen when we’re there tonight.

Yesterday’s perfume was much more successful. It was Tom Ford Eau de Soleil Blanc. It reminded me of AG Un Matin d’Orage. It was a perfect sunny vacation day perfume.

EP&F is light, pleasant, and boring. And it’s my favorite JM ???? Enjoy the rest of your trip!

How lucky for you to have seen a celebrity chef! I enjoy watching Top Chef. I found Richard Blais to be more and more pretentious as he became more successful.

Waiting for an appt in Alaia edp, which I haven’t worn in an age. I smell fantastic – no idea who the perfumer is, though.

Glorious legit warm day here ???? Hope others are enjoying the same.

Took advantage of a dry, semi-sunny day and cleaned-out flower beds. After quick shower, one spray of Coco to enjoy, while rubbing sore muscles. Can’t wear Coco in the heat, so I enjoy this beauty all winter long.

A nice warm sunny day, I’m just lazing around at home and testi g out Pryn perfume’s Amalfi. I like this a lot…mostly salty lemon with some florals and something vaguely woody. I like the lemon which is a bit unusual for me. No hint of lemon cleaning products at all. Love the salty aspect.

SOTD is “Vi et Armis” from BeauFort London.

    Top: black pepper, tea and cardamom;
    Mid: whiskey, incense and opium;
    Base: tobacco, birch and oud.

Today this was mostly about the tobacco and got a compliment from TOMK (who on other days has complained it made him feel ill) – I think the secret is to spray more lightly. :^)

Wearing Atelier Sud Magnolia today, which I wore the crap out of last spring to the point of getting a little sick of it. Now, it’s been long enough that I can appreciate it fully again.

Wearing in excess of 12 sprays of vintage Miss Dior. We are doing a bit of account swapping at work, so it was a bit of a trying day; I needed the boost.

Plus I was dragged into a meeting with my new-ish supervisor and manager into the General Managers office. I tried to get out of it but at least missing lunch was worth it since my super did most of the talking in the meeting (as we prepared over lunchtime). I will get my time back though..lol

SOTD = Prada Infusion de Mimosa

W00t! Spring in a bottle! I first smelled this in Barcelona but since it was full price and it was just the beginning of vacation, I decided to wait until I got back and wait for a deal. Anyway, I can absolutely spray away – 8 big ones!

Commuting Woes Nos. 425-426. I can’t unsee these fashion faux pas. Today’s were all about cut outs

    – woman wearing jeans with a cut out the size of 1.5x of a $ bill on the front of the jeans. The cut out was so high up her pasty thigh that she either went commando or wore a dental floss thin thong. Ouch?

    – woman with big boobies wearing a push up bra under a scoop neck blouse where the top third center was a series of horizontal cut outs. I have no other words.

You smell fabulous! I’ve been wanting a FB of Mimosa for a while now, hooray for sales!

The second woman on your commute is incredible, I aspire to that level of self-confidence. I’m currently at “will wear sleeveless blouses with a v-neck”, so it’ll take a while to get to her level of oomph.

Finally back to wearing bold fragrances because I have the sniffles and can’t smell anything else! Baccarat is fantastic, but smells VERY different with a stuffy nose. It’s much more metallic, like old jewelry, and I’m getting more cedar than I normally notice.

It’s probably too late but what the heck. SOTD was Opardu. Then my partial bottle of Iris Nobile EDT came in so it is my scent of the evening. So happy that I found a partial bottle on EBay for a great price. Love it!
