Wednesday scent of the day 4/25

Posted by Robin on 25 April 2018 258 Comments

It's Hump Day and Golf Day and Ella Fitzgerald's birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing a dab of By Kilian Apple Brandy, from perfumer Sidonie Lancesseur.

Reminder: 4/27 will be Next Generation Friday...wear something from a younger perfumer.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Just had a couple of sprays of Jour d’Hermes that I can barely smell. Either the flu or an ugly cold are hitting on my door ????. Leaving for work in a while in a gray, rainy day, but at least I smell great ????.

Thank you! I will have a shot for sure when I get home.
I sampled the Gardenia a while ago and the opening is almost the same as the original. The gardenia is very noticeable in the mid notes. A very pretty green floral perfume, but I did not find it full bottle worth. I love the original and the absolue and with those 2 I have enough.

The Beatles were who I thought of when I saw the photo of the apple… reminds me of their record labels which I loved as a kid! The whole green apple on side 1 and the apple cut in half on side 2.

      Ahhh… Nostalgia!

Ditto, Nancyleandros. I can’t decide either. It’s definitely interesting, but I wish someone would walk by wearing it. I think I need to sniff it by accident in order to know how I feel about. Currently, I have an intellectual respect for and curiosity about it. But I don’t know how I *feel* about it.

This one was an immediate YES for me, whereas most Amouages are a solid meh
( Except for you Darling Dia). Part of the reason is that it reminds me of a tiny pond in a park in my childhood town. Damp soil, tiny little ferns, water, and an atmosphere of peace.
It is the only Amouage FB I have ever purchased.

I remember feeling like that about almost all the Imaginary Authors scents I tried – loved the ideas, the concept, liked the smells – but found they weren’t really scents I wanted to walk around in. I suppose when you find that scent you both admire with your head and your heart, you hit the jackpot!

That’s so true. I think that’s what makes this so much fun, finding a YES! among all the maybes. I also love when a Definite No becomes a TOP 5 EVER. (I’m looking at you, Cuir de Russie.) Of course, that makes it so much harder to turn the maybes away, because what if?

KellyC, on the EdMs, the 100mL bottles were too big for me to comfortably spray so the largest I’ve bought was the 50mL. The 30 mL is SUPER cute and worth paying more per mL.

Thanks for the feedback! Is the 30 ml a spray? I do prefer spray over splash. But I try not to get 100 ml of anything anymore unless I want to split it or something. Too many scents, too little time!

It’s the Eau. I briefly had a 15ml bottle of the Elixir, but that one was more of a sweet/syrupy drydown on my skin that made me feel a little queasy when I wore it, so away it went!

It’s probably just me. I’ve never been a fan of sweet scents, but my tolerance for sweet seems to be getting worse the older I get. I tried to wear Angel one day last week and it practically made me hurl. It’s my bff’s signature scent and I LOVE smelling it on her.

I liked EdM the minute I sniffed it when it first came out, but I didn’t buy it for a number of years. It is sparkly… my husband asked me what that meant, and I had trouble describing it. Next time I wear it, I’ll just shove my wrist his nose and say…”See? This is what I meant.”

SotD is Dilettante, by Hiram Green
    What a great scent!

Wednesdays are always very quiet (not that many people in the office and hardly any meetings), so I did not give it that much thought this morning, but do you guys think Dilettante is safe for work?

It has a bit of salty funk to it (I adore that part), but I can see how some ‘perfume grinches’ may find it too much haha

I think you can pretty much get away with all sorts of perfume at work in the Netherlands.
I’ve yet to try Dilettante. I’ve only tried the first two Hiram Greens and love Moon Bloom, his second (can’t remember the name) wasn’t as enjoyable to me.

Yup, i guess thats true. :)
I try to keep it somewhat decent though ;) because I work in an open spaced office, thats very crowded. And on some days I have lots of meetings in small rooms. But one of my bosses wears Coco and you can smell it from miles away, and throughout the years I have also detected Opium and Poison haha. :)

I am a big Moon Bloom fan as well. And I recently started to warm up to Shangri La.

There are a few programs that are more frequently used by larger health care systems. The tricky part is that each system can modify or tweak the program so many of the functions are different. Sometimes you can jump right in, and sometimes you need to take the facility led classes. To jump right in, you usually have to pass a computer system proficiency test. Fun times????
The government has mandated electronic systems nationwide, as far as I know. If not in compliance, I believe there are monetary “fees” that the facilty must pay…

I agree with Robin, it tells the story of the flower not the root. As an example, Iris Ukiyoe is nothing like Hiris. IU is gauzy and floral with a delicate citrus top note that I adore.

OJ osmanthus made it to one of my “lists” yesterday! not that that is a very prestigious place to be, ha – I fell down the Osmanthus research hole yesterday, after sampling Roger & Gallet Fleur d’Osmanthus and Hermes Osmanthe Yunnan

Is the OJ your favorite? any other favorite Osmanthus scents?

Hi Coin-op! The OJ is a favorite citrus. I don’t find it very osmanthus-y.

I think the Hermes and also Parfums d’Empire Osmanthus Interdite are better representations of osmanthus. Just my uneducated opinion, however. I have not yet found my own very favorite osmanthus.

I have the R&G and like it a lot when it’s too hot out for perfume. It smells mostly like peach water to me.
2 deeper and more heady/rich/leathery osmanthus scents are Perris Monte Carlo Absolue d’Osmanthe and Auphorie Miyako. Very different from the sheer apricot tea of the Hermes, R&G, PdE ones.

Hmm…okay, I’ve got samples of both and have them on the backs of my hands. My initial impression is that TDC is slightly fruitier and powdery. OY is “sharper,” but not a sharp perfume per se. Both beautiful, the Hermès would not be worth the price difference (for me.)

Not that anyone asked me… My favorite Osmanthus scents are Rahele and Fig Tea. I need to try the osmanthus scents by OJ, PdE and TDC. The Hermes is beautiful but is gone almost as soon as I am done spraying.

I’m wearing Oud Palao today and feeling a bit smothered by it, but I guess I gave myself some very liberal sprays since I’m not going out anywhere. I am definitely getting rose, rum, and patchouli, on top of rather stinky oud. I haven’t looked up the creator yet, so not sure if I’m in the CP or not.

Well, just looked it up and the nose is Fabrice Pellegrin. From his long list of scents, I’m guessing he might not count as “young,” but I’m not sure. It’s an impressive list, although I’m only familiar with a couple of the other ones besides Oud Palao–also by Diptyque–Eau Duelle, and Volutes (which I love and also own, in both versions).
Btw, our weather has advanced to the late spring stage at which all the white florals are blooming at once! Yesterday I could smell the scent of jasmines along the fence at my office building even while standing out on the fifth floor balcony! And at home, I discovered that my neighbour’s big gardenia bush had three blossoms (oooh, that wonderful salty-buttery smell) plus there was a huge low-hanging magnolia blossom that I could pull down on the tree branch and sniff–lemony beauty! Ahhhh, how wonderful, except–ALLERGIES!!!

VC&A Rose Velours from the sample pile. I’m feeling a bit meh about it. It’s a nice enough jammy rose, maybe a little too sweet for me. But it’s not really doing anything for me.
I also have a bit of the new Commodity Nectar on my hand from a Sephora sample. I quite like it! It’s a rich, almost chewy, neroli/OB. Simple and linear, but sunny and cheerful.

You’re wells! Supposedly Miyako smells very much like osmanthus eo. I couldn’t really wear it, myself, but it was fascinating to smell. I’ve never smelled osmanthus IRL, and had no idea how complex it smelled. The Perris MC one is quite beautiful and more of a proper perfume. Gentler than Miyako but still rich.

I actually got a dab of osmanthus eo from Mountain Rose Herbs (recommended by chocolatemarzipan) and it smells wholly different than a nosegay of osmanthus – I think I’d prob prefer smelling like a waft of florals than that – BUT it looks like you can get the Miyako sample from their website for $5 shipped, so I’ll give it a try!

Our grass has finally gone that super-green color I associate with Ireland, albeit about six weeks later than usual. (Husband keeps looking outside and muttering darkly, “Hope the grass grows faster than the cows can eat it, or they’ll be hungry this winter.”) The redbuds are blooming. Trees are putting out new leaves.

I am FINALLY ready to decant and split Epidor. (Split participants, look for the email I just sent you.) I wore it yesterday, and it is really wonderful. The big bottle is plummier than I remember the sample being, and the wheat notes are a little toned down, but it’s just gorgeous and glowy.

In vintage-ish Amazone today, collecting up mini bottles of various provenance to sell on ebay. I was planning on listing individually, but now I’m wondering if it would be better to list them in small lots of 3 to 5. Anyone have advice?

Good morning, in Baiser Vole Lys Rose today thanks to the swapmeet and morejasminplease (hi!). It’s easy and friendly and will allow me to choose something else in the afternoon, by which time it will have faded (not always a bad thing in my book).
I’m not sure Mathilde Laurent was young when she created it, but it’s a young-ish scent to me and matches a skirt I’m wearing with a rose print. A rose scent would fit even better, but I was too chicken to give Rose Royale another try!
Any free time I’ll have today I’m going to spend debating which Guerlain classic scent to add to my fragrancenet cart to get to $59. Chamade is in the running, for sure…

I’m at the edge of my seat!

What does the Terre d’hermes come to? Does he use the EDT or EDP?

I got my husband a set that came with a small refillable bottle – and I huge bottle that you use to refill it with – but I don’t see that combo online now.

it comes to like $27 (!). In Edt. He likes to spray, so I don’t think I can handle the EDP… :)
gotta look for that coupon stat!

that 37% deal is very elusive, I don’t have a code, and the deal pops up sometimes, but not others!

OK, but here is the thing, if both the Terre d’Hermes and your Guerlain classic are under $30, you may have to get a 3rd fragrance to get to $59 free shipping. No one said it would be easy, ha. keep us posted!

Ella Fitzgerald!!! What an extraordinary voice. I listened to a LOT of her in high school. I should dig some of her music up again.

I’m back at work today! I’m mostly ok, though a bit stuffy/coughy and woozy/nauseated from DayQuil + the vestiges of last night’s NyQuil. I think I just have to take it easy and sleep for nine hours again tonight (as I did last night!), and I will be good as new by tomorrow, Friday at the latest.

I can pretty much smell again (actually, we verified I could already smell yesterday when we went to what I think was a Hong Kong sweets shop and sat next to someone eating a durian pancake–yech). SOTD is En Passant! Spring in a bottle. I LOVE it. Olivia Giacobetti is 52, which is younger than my parents and therefore counts as young…? Sure, let’s go with that.

I think…that I have a lot of trouble relating perfume versions of scents to their natural versions. It’s the most beautiful perfume lilac I’ve ever smelled. It’s…not THAT realistic to my nose, but I think I’m a little broken in that regard.

I did a bit of testing and spraying here and there this morning, still having a hard time figuring out what to wear with the change in seasons. Spring florals still don’t appeal. Ended up in PHI and man, do I smell good.

Slogging through the laundering of winter items for summer storage. I purchased quite a few cashmere items beginning last summer and after doing a bit of reading on care, purchased The Laundress Wool & Cashmere shampoo to wash them in. I cannot rave enough about this product! Some reviews I read said it made their sweaters softer and nicer than they were brand new, and I have to wholeheartedly agree.

Yesterday I laundered a mohair-blend moto vest that I don’t wear very often because it’s so itchy. Now that it’s dry it feels like soft, curly, puppy fur :) If I didn’t have to fight my washing machine make sure it doesn’t agitate, this task might be more pleasurable. I have to babysit the damn thing through every step and use multiple settings. The downside of computerized v. manual settings :(

    Happy hump day, all!

Kelly Caleche parfum. I can’t rec this enough– it’s really beautiful and smooth. The parfum can be purchased on ebay for very cheap.

Speaking of ebay– a seller has some big Atelier Cologne Candles on sale for $29.99 with shipping. Not affiliated (just excited about getting to try one). I looooove their soaps. The seller left out the word “cologne” from the brand name. Just a heads up.

Good morning, NST. Work again—I could really get used to these short weeks! I’m facing a long, busy day full of tedious meetings and more tedious tasks, and people who seem to have reached the edge of their tolerance for one another, their humour, and their sense of purpose. I’m not sure that I’m not among them, actually. Seems to be forever since I had a big, uproarious belly laugh. Actually, it was yesterday when I was talking to my sister in Australia, but yesterday seems forever ago. Anyway, what perfume helps get me through a day like this? Used to be I’d turn to No. 19 on days like this, but it’s a bit unreliable for me these days, so my spine-stiffener today is Beloved. Its beauty is a strong contrast to my clothes: jeans, shirt, velvet bomber, boots. It’s a very, “ Don’t mess me about,” outfit, while Beloved suggests things that are soft and flowing and languid. I quite like the disjoin.

Well, I need to arise and get second cups of tea, which means unearthing myself from beneath three cats, which is a bigger job than it sounds, because when I shift one and move on to the second, the first sort of flows back into place again. It’s a mystery how they do that. Be well, all.

I’m curious: are my tastes that much different from the average perfume shoppers even when it comes to Jo Malone perfumes? It’s not the first perfume from the line that I like that got discontinued or never re-issued after being a part of the limited edition, while others that I find boring and repetitive are still in the collection or are being re-introduced for the second/third chance (all those LE blossoms that disappear from my skin before I left the store).

I just got the Saks Mothers Day advertisement in the mail and it’s pretty amazing. Has anyone else seen it? I think it has the most gorgeous photographs of perfume bottles I’ve ever seen. Some of them (the photos) are real works of art: the Victor&Rolf Bonbon, an array of pretty pastel juices cut-glass Bottega Veneta bottles, STUNNING angular Mugler bottles in amethyst, emerald, and pale sapphire, and more–it makes the Bond No. 9 one Spring Fling with the pink rose look just gorgeous. And the McQueen perfume bottle, is that ever gorgeous!–one to buy for the bottle alone, but for the $395 price tag. I may save this booklet just because it’s such lovely photos. As for scent strips, there are only a couple–which is good actually, as I hate them. Still, I compulsively sniff each one. They are the aforementioned Spring Fling (sweet), and Jo Malone Blossom Girls (sweet but lighter). The only GWP seems to be a fancy atomizer, if you spend $100–ho hum. They really do carry a lot of brands now, more than Saks used to in the past.

SOTD is Twill Rose by Les Parfums de Rosine. I ordered a 3ml sample some months ago and seem to recall being whelmed on first trying it, but it called my name this morning and I’m finding it quite FB-worth now. Of course, now I can’t find it anywhere because it’s d/c’d. Why do I do this to myself, one might wonder. BdJ’s “new fragrance” post says it was marketed to men, but I don’t find it particularly masculine. Did any of you try it while it was still available?

14 hours on, and it’s still there, shifting, being intriguing but also comfortable…nearly as comfortable as the floofy grey Herschel cat who has done the perfect squirrel curl (wrap self into tight ball, then roll belly outwards a little from the middle, ensure tail is spectacular) on my jumper next to me as I stuff)

Today started off grey and drizzly, with a few actual rain shower thrown in. Now it’s bright and sunny, but I would have preferred a little more rain. Tree pollen is off the charts here when it isn’t raining, so it’s sneezing season. Ah, allergies.

SOTD = Byredo Gypsy Water, from the undying sample in my stash. This seems to have become my “Going to the dentist” scent. Today’s appointment was short and sweet… post-op consult with the periodontist to see how things were healing. The answer: pretty good!

SOTD = Armani Prive Iris Celadon

Because Laura wore this 2 days in a row and someone else wore this yesterday. I have a largish decant from queen enabler clarissa. Musky iris patchouli. My nose did not detect chocolate or cardamom.
