Tuesday scent of the day 4/3

Posted by Robin on 3 April 2018 242 Comments

(With apologies to Tuesday fans), it's Monday's ugly little sister. What fragrance are you wearing?

I am still out of town, still commando, and drinking a latte.

Reminder: on 4/6, wear one of your "top 10 of spring" fragrances (unless it's fall where you are, in which case wear one of your "top 10 of fall" scents).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Jealous of your latte, Robin. Hope your day goes well.

I’m wearing Apres L’Ondee, the current EdT. Smells great to me. I know everyone mourns the parfum but the EdT is better than nothing.

      Well, it’s going ;-)

Latte is pretty good. You smell way better than me, though!

There are Tuesday fans??? ;) SOTD is Pierre Guillaume’s Cuir d’Iris, which is showing more of its iris and less of its leather than usual today (not that that’s a bad thing). I know this doesn’t work on a lot of people, but I love it.

There must be because I know some readers did not like my use of “monday’s ugly little sister”. This whole week so far is an ugly little sister of something, so letting off steam in little ways seems warranted :-)

It is currently 32 and drizzly here, with a 100% chance of the dreaded “wintry mix” this afternoon. Ugh. Enough already.
SotD is Wit. I can at least smell like spring. I’ve never been a floral lover, but this one along with LaChasse are two that could possibly change my mind. It’s very pretty and really does smell like spring in a bottle.

I am sampling Zoologist Elephant, which I love! The leafy green part reminds me a lot of fig perfumes, but I like this more than I like most fig perfumes. It is VERY springy, which is hilarious because this morning it snowed in my face.

They do a nice sample set! I was not crazy about Hummingbird but loved Civet and Nightingale. My husband occasionally wears Rhinoceros which has really grown on me but is one of the most insane powerhouses I’ve ever smelled. And Macaque is great if you love galbanum (I do not)

Wearing Aether Arts Perfumes Ginger Rose today.
I won this from Cafleurbon, and it is delightful. I will be repurchasing when I empty this bottle. Longevity is quite shocking, and as it is an oil, it doesn’t change much in a wearing, but when it smells this nice, you do not want it to change.

In an oil dupe of Carnal Flower by Universal Perfumes & Cosmetics (Kuwait). I don’t know what kind of sorcery is afoot there but this stuff is faaaantastic! And strong! I couldn’t bear the thought of shelling out for another bottle of the real deal (my 3.4 ounce bottle is finally empty after 6 years of sporadic use), so I decided to give this a spin. My nose and wallet are extremely happy!

Unfortunately, they only have dupes of the following Malles at the moment:

        French Lover
        Iris Poudre
        Carnal Flower
        Le Parfum de Therese
        Lys Mediterranee
        Monsieur
        Noir Epice
        Portrait of a Lady
        …but are slowly adding more…

I don’t know about their ebay presence but if they’re shipping from Kuwait, it’s the same company.

They have too many dupes to call out here, along with the authentic versions of scents long discontinued. You can use the search function on the site (google for link) and just scroll around. All the dupes are listed as ‘generic oils’ and are available in many different sizes; just calling that out so you’ll know what it is when you see the phrase.

going to wear Beige today, from a decant courtesy of a lovely NSTer. It is very pretty, and has lasted from my spray last night. My neighbor has a gardenia plant that is blooming. Wow the fragrance from the flowers is spectacular. Now I want to try the Chanel Gardenia. Safe blind buy?!

The Chanel Gardenia is well made and nice but not worth the money to my nose. I would rather go with getting Andy Tauer’s gardening.

I’ll second that Chanel Gardenia isn’t close to the smell of real gardenia and I would not recommend a blind buy. The closest I’ve found are Arquiste Boutonniere and Tom Ford Velvet Gardenia.

I think Van Cleef & Arpels Gardenia Petale is a good ( true) wearable gardenia . Also Jour d’hermes gardenia is nice. I bought a Dame soliflore oil of Gardenia that was a very heavy interpretation of the flower…but it might be better if it comes in a spray form? I didn’t like the oil version, it was strong and kind of bossy.

    Today I am really struggling..
Yesterday baby buddha was sick with vomit and last night at 3am woke up with a fever. Mr. L decided to stay home today and help me out…
My neighbor is going to make me a matcha latte in a few minutes, she bought a new powder and wants me to try it out.

I am commando at the moment.

Since the swap meet didn’t work out for me I was wondering if I could tempt anyone for a decant of Encens Mythique for some Chanel/Biologique Rechearche skincare samples?

Drinking a latte made with cold brew coffee. I think I’m going to have to switch permanently to cold brew, on behalf of my stomach. Haven’t been troubled once by acid over the past five days, since I’ve been drinking cold brew instead of regular auto drip.

Changed out my winter fragrances for my spring ones yesterday, finally (with that 16-inch snow only a week in the rear view mirror), and the Hatbox of Current Rotation is crammed full. I think I have more spring fragrances than anything else – it probably comes of loving the greenies. I am luxuriating in Chamade today, an edt probably from the 1970s. Lovely.

In case you’re wondering, here’s a list of the Current Rotation:
      Guerlain Chamade edt, possibly 1970s
      Crown Perfumery Crown Bouquet
      Jacomo Silences pdt, ca. 1980s
      PdN Le Temps d’une Fete
Chanel No. 19 edt, gray/gold refillable container, probably 1980s
Chanel No. 19 edp, from the Duty Free in the Rome airport
      Deneuve
      Penhaligon’s Ostara
      Penhaligon’s Violetta
      Cuir de Lancome
      Ralph Lauren Safari
Balmain Jolie Madame, vintage extrait mini
Tauer Carillon Pour un Ange 2ml sample (the second I bought, but I don’t feel like I need a full bottle since it took me 6 years to use up the first sample)
      Diorissimo ca. 2006 tester
      DelRae Amoureuse
DelRae Wit, courtesy of dear Waterdragon
      Hermes Amazone mini, ca. 1990s
      Parfum d’Hermes ca. 1999

      I feel rich.

I am wearing Safari right now. I got a small amount of what I estimate is vintage formulation in the swapmeet last year.

        Its gorgeous!!!!
But now I am reading everywhere it has been reformulated not in a good way.
Argh. And the vintage FBs are so expensive. I think I am just going to buy all the perfume minis on ebay haha

Agreed. Cold brew is the absolute best (plus I manage to drink it with just a touch of cream and sweetener; I always want a lot more sweet and milk in regularly brewed coffee)

Not sure if this will make you feel better or worse, but when caffeinated coffee was too acidic and caffeinated for my body to deal with, I switched to half-caf and then full decaf. Still coffee, still delicious. ;)

I went through my 2ml Tauer Carillon Pour un Ange sample much more quickly than you did and am happy to have another sample on board for this spring. Enjoy your greens!

I kind of got tired of needing caffeine to start the day, so I’ve been on 100% decaf (which does still have a small amount of caffeine) for five months now. It didn’t seem to help with the acid problem. Sigh.

Oh, really? My issues are more with caffeine than with acidity, I think. I guess that’s why the switch worked. Keep up with the cold brew then!

Going to the Natural History museum downtown today. Wearing vintage Bal for it and some amber jewellery. I have forgotten how exhausting having out of town family can be. Especially when there are little kids involved.

Pre shower and have remnants of Mortel on my wrist from yesterday (hello longevity!) and L’Ombre dans L’Eau edp and Smoke Show on my forearm from last night. The last two have all but disappeared so really impressed by Mortel.

Mortel doesn’t feel heavy, so I was also surprised by its staying power. I need to try it in warm weather since I really loved it when I tried it in summer, but not as much in winter. Too cool and dry maybe?

We had a cold front move in overnight, and the cold and windy morning had me jonesing to break out my new 7.5 ml travel refill of Kilian’s Intoxicated, which I recently bought from someone on another site. I reached for it and spritzed a good spray on my neck, only to realize with a jolt that I’d accidentally picked up my travel refill of Flower of Immortality instead. ???? I really like FoI, but was not at all in the right mood to wear it today, and now I feel totally distracted by it and out of sorts this morning. Sigh.

Today I’m going to have an endocardiogram ( or something similar to that spelling) and a stress test. Ugh…I am not allowed any thing to eat/drink and I’m hungry and have not had any diet coke since midnight ( OK, one half swallow around 9 am) I don’t know what is in diet coke that is so addicting. Its not just the caffeine, it’s some evil chemical that isn’t in other caffeinated soft drinks. Idk… Anyway I’m wearing No. 19 edp for the spring that isn’t here. I think I will switch to Casmir later though, because I need some cuddlefluff ☺

Especially if you have a particular genetic profile, diet coke (caffeine + aspartame) helps keep your dopamine regulated — it essentially gives you a bolus of dopamine every time you take a sip. It is a serious addiction and I had a terrible time giving it up — it was definitely NOT just a caffeine addiction.

I’m not a soda drinker, but I’m curious: why do you have to give it up then if it’s helping with dopamine?

Well, I would say 2 things — one, diet soda is bad for you in other ways, and there are far better ways, nutritionally speaking, to keep your dopamine regulated. It is looking more and more like artificial sweeteners are bad for you in even more ways than people originally thought, because they mess with your insulin system by tasting sweet and then not providing calories.

And the other is that I don’t think it’s a good idea to outsource your dopamine regulation to any international corporation, right? Not dissing Coke in particular, just saying I don’t think it’s a sensible thing. I used to just about panic when my diet coke was running low.

Smelling divine in Bois des Iles edt. I have been wearing the edp since I got a large decant in the fall splitmeet, and rationing the last few drops of my nearly-drained edt decant. Thanks to the swapmeet I’ve got more edt and can wear it again. Heaven.

Off on a day of dr appts soon – eyes and mammaries. When I saw my eye dr 2 years ago I only had to wear reading glasses occasionally. Now I’m wearing them constantly. I am hoping I can get bifocal contacts this time around. I would really like to be able to see both my dinner food and my dining partner, if you please.

Ha! I’ll be needing progressives by the time my insurance will pay again (in 2 years). They recommend them this time, but I resisted. I can actually read fine without reading glasses, but have to take off my glasses if I’m wearing them. Good luck with the mammo! I just went to a new place for mammo+sono and they gave me results on the spot! That was a 1st.

Micallef Vanille Orient today from a generous NSTer.

It is lovely but I smell some oud I think…which I used to like in moderation but lately have been off of. Is it true oud or just woods?…unsure. When does wood come into oud territory to the nose…?

To my nose, Oud = medicinal, bitter, band-aid-like. For me, the best Oud is one you can’t smell but lifts the other notes and provides body to an otherwise sheer fragrance.

I sat by a big quince tree that was laden with almost-ripe fruit…wondering if the fruit will get picked? After almost seven months since his bike crash Alex is finally allowed to start walking without crutches. Lots of physio but steady progress.
    Wearing Cristalle.
I hope your week improves Robin and ends on a happier note.

The fruit should be picked and offered to people who would make quince jelly or puddings. I’ve never eaten quince raw, but I bet it’s nice when it’s properly ripe.

Sounds like a gorgeous day. Cristalle is fabulous, no? Try it in your winter: it will move from fabulous to sublime.

I missed a lot of news last year when my mom was ill, including apparently that your hubby had had an accident. (Knew he’d had surgery, but not why.) That must have been very frightening; glad he’s making good progress now.

Hello, all. Yesterday I went to World and tried Upper Ten. I am happy to say it absolutely will not be a purchase. On me, it wasn’t richly interesting, just slightly sweet-sour, then grapey, then gone. Oh, and rather screech-y about the middle. My experience with UT further convinces me that I have bad skin for perfume. Too acidic, or too alkaline, or something. A scientist among us could probably tell me which: every red lippy I wear turns noticeably pink within minutes, not that I let that deter me from wearing them, but I do wonder whether that’s the reason certain perfumes go nasty on me. No matter— many are lovely on me. And one of the loveliest is my SOTD, Ambre Narguile, soft, buttery spices, apple, tobacco and amber. Heaven in a bottle.

Well, ordinary life resumes today, and a pile of assignments awaits my green marking pen, except that I mark on line these days. Also staffing, and the timetable for next year. And people everywhere, all the time. And something else that I dislike the idea of so much that I cannot recall it.

Heigh ho…it’s a simple life, but mine own. Be well, all.

And Ambre Narguile is so wonderful anyway. Hope it’s helping to smooth out ordinary life’s little bumps…

I’m wearing Aqua Allegoria Rosa Pop today. Haven’t been online much lately because I have some medical stuff going on. Went into the emergency room just over a week ago with what at the time looked like a small stroke, but it turned out I actually had a seizure, which I’d never had before. CT and MRI showed that I have a mass of some sort on the right side of my brain, and I have to have surgery to have it removed. I’m on track to have surgery next week. There are two possible bits of good news in this and those are: 1. the thing (I’m calling it Blobzilla) is relatively close to the surface, so the neurosurgeon is hopeful that he can get all of it, and 2. a body CT scan came back clear, so they think, whatever this is, that it originated where it is rather than being something that spread from elsewhere.

I’d managed to make it 38 years without ever having to have surgery, but I couldn’t just start off with something easy, could I? :P

In Arielle Shoshana on this lovely spring day here (but sprayed on what feels like too much and feeling a little bugged by all that loud passion fruit) – I’m working from home and not getting that much done. Heading to San Diego for a conference this weekend and been spending way too much time debating whether to simply use Uber (never really done that before) or rent a car so I can drive around my old neighborhood etc…
I feel like a nube – logically, Uber must be the better way to go, but I just don’t really feel like doing it.

If you can afford it, I would rent the car. Uber is great, but you’ll have more flexibility and you can sing loudly in the car without freaking anyone out.

Robin, I hope that whatever is keeping you out of town gets resolved soon!

I’m totally hating on today’s drizzly weather. It’s cold, clammy, and gloomy. I would LOVE to send this wet stuff someplace where it would be appreciated, because I certainly do not care for it!

SOTD = Burberry Brit Rhythm for Women, from the sample stash. Color me very surprised and pleased with this one! Lavender and I don’t always get along, but this is so pretty. A great springtime scent, IMO.

I hope so too! And it is a shame that I am out of town in equally yuck weather. Why can’t I be out of town in Hawaii??

And yes, isn’t that one a surprise? I am still hoping I come across a cheap bottle somewhere, it makes a great no-brainer.

I did a little “non-serious” poking around on the Internet for a cheap, small-ish bottle earlier today. I think BBR for Women might be discontinued already, since I never see it anywhere IRL.

I am totally late to the party today because my day was so busy, starting off with a check-up visit to my hip surgeon, following upon my dislocation a week and a half ago. Things look pretty good but I still must be quite careful and do no exercise, even have limited walking, for 4 more weeks to allow healing of torn muscles. I have some upcoming trips for conferences and he was NOT enthusiastic about my flying, especially to Europe, but ultimately conceded it would be OK if I’m very very careful. I really do hope things go OK. Anyway, today I wore something from a sample, The Different Company Le 15. It is pleasant, though strikes me as something falling more into the cologne category with the strong emphasis on citrus notes (bergamot), and it’s so light. Perhaps if I could spray more on at will I’d get more of the incense notes. Meanwhile my house which is full now not only of my own (multiple) cats but of (a) four visitor cats from a friend who’s having house repairs done and (b) Meow Kitty, my newly adopted senior cat, is also quite full of cat interactions and adventures, though it’s gone much more smoothly than I ever anticipated. Little Julia the tortie escaped from a balcony and I found her hiding in a neighbour’s garage under their old car and meowing loudly at me for rescue. I had to recruit two other neighbours to help me shoo her out from there and into my arms because I’m just not allowed to get down on the ground and bend way over to catch stray kitties. Whew! Life is exciting! All for now.

My 1st wearing and it’s really lovely. The neroli is strong enough on my skin to be noticed, it’s clean, alittle vanillic right after the open and I will wear this a few times to get to know it better!
