Monday scent of the day 3/12

Posted by Robin on 12 March 2018 347 Comments

Monday, plus, Napping Day and Girl Scout Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm just barely awake in Hermès Le Jardin de Monsieur Li.

Reminder: 3/16 will be Amber Friday...wear a fragrance with an amber note.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I read your post about my no make up make up over the weekend but was too busy to respond. I like anything that lets my skin shine through and I still look like me. I have a little bit of redness around my nose and on my chin and I feel like the cushion covers it up a bit.

That makes sense…I have had freckles my entire life but now they are age spots…I do virtually nothing with my skin except a bit of oil…it is very dry so I don’t even wash it (yikes!!! I know!) Right now I am just wetting it in the shower, then after applying whatever oil I have concocted (right now it is jojoba with lavender e.o.) and then some sunscreen…maybe I should start with bb cream? I am so lazy, though…..

I am lazy too, plus I have two little ones so I don’t have that much time to do a lot. You should try the one I use if you have dry skin, I have the same and it really locks in the moisture all day.

I’d say asian foundations are better for that, generally speaking – letting your skin look like skin (but better.) But I haven’t worn a western foundation in 5 or 6 years, so maybe they’ve gotten better. That AmorePacific cushion’s sunscreen is also really effective. I’m really excited to know someone else who’s using it for some reason :D I love, love, love that product!

Another recent cushion user here…but I feel bit like a fail, anyway – I find it pretty hard to apply with a cushion as opposed to fingers, and even though I bought the sheerest coverage (Missha tone up), I still find it a bit too much…maybe I need to go one shade darker. And practice more :)

You can use your fingers or a blender sponge too. I just dab it on my face and use my hand to blend it in or a brush.

K Paint, I know you are a fan of Sulwahsoo/Amore Pacific. Is there any skin care products that really blew you away that I must try?

I prefer to apply it with a beauty blender, primarily because it’s faster and easier. I know a lot of people love the cushion puffs but I find them a bit awkward. I also don’t like the product seeping over on top of the puff that seems inevitable when pressing it into the cushion.

Eschmeling, if the Missha is not sheer enough, give the AmorePacific (long name: Color Control Cushion Compact Broad Spectrum SPF 50+) one a try. It’s sheer, hydrating, and extremely comfortable to wear.

LTSG, my Sulwhasoo faves are the TimeTreasure Water and Emulsion. They are super lightweight yet somehow pack an incredible amount of hydration. It’s crazy $$ but sample packets, tiny minis and deluxe minis are easy to come by.

My AP faves are from the Moisture Bound line. The Refreshing Hydra-Gel is a dream – lightweight, soothing, hydrating, deliciousness. I love the texture, which is hard to describe. I also love the Rejuvenating Eye Treatment Gel. I haven’t found a way to buy AP on the cheap, however. I’ve actually been looking for a dupe of the Hydra-Gel for years, but haven’t found anything quite like it. Blithe Iceplant Pressed Serum comes close, though.

    SOTD Sexy Amber by MK
    Very soft and lovely

Last night was very bizarre and emotional. Mr. Lvtsg, the kids and I were glued to our window as there was a lots of first responders and police boats on the river in front of us. We were thinking..is it a drug bust? Terrorist? Finally our neighbor came to knock on our door and told us that a helicopter had crashed into the river in front of us. The outcome was not good, and I will spare the details. Last night Mr. L and I could hardly sleep and both were a bit emotional this morning while reading about it in the WSJ. I cried into my cup of coffee.

I am happy its Amber this week, since I have one for everyday.

It’s a little heavier on me than Allure. It reminds me of Laura Mercier Ambre Vanille, except MK is less loud and seems more refined. I can’t wear the Mercier, it gives me a headache.

Same here. I don’t like scented lotion, and I particularly don’t like to have scented products on my palms and fingers. It’s a little weird, for a perfume fan.

I’m also not big on strongly scented lotions or body products, particularly hand creams. Though more specifically, I want them to smell good going on, and then for the scent to dissipate within a few minutes. Same goes for skincare & hair products, conditioner, etc. Nor am I into scented candles and the like. $$$ saved, AFAIC.

Day off today, and need to do some cleaning. I’m sampling SL Cedre and really liking it. This might be my tuberose. Although I like the BIG tuberose perfumes, I don’t care much for the menthol that seems to come with a lot of them. Happy Monday everyone!

I actually have amber for every day this week. On the other hand, I find amber to be more appropriate to cooler months, or as it is known in Texas, Not Summer. It is supposed to be ranging from the mid 60s to the 80s this week. Anybody have some suggestions for amber in warmer months? Today I chose Eau de Mandarine Ambree.

Theorema? And maybe other amber/citrus scents.
Also, Omnia Profumi Ambra is a pretty light amber scent to me (although some other reviewers find it rich and heavy).

The first fragrance I am wearing has amber in it so I am counting it towards the community project but smells like a warm weather scent to me. Tomorrow I might wear Nocturnes which is a pretty floral with amber in the base. Maybe research some of the scents you are itching to wear and just see if there is amber in them…lots of fragrances have amber in the base so you might find some more suitable to warmer weather. Hope this helps!

I’d recommend Prada L’Eau Ambree for warmer weather. It’s quite sheer overall but still present. I’m wearing it today for a day with a high of 66, so hopefully I can confirm this recommendation at the end of the day.

I have pulled out JM Dark Amber & Ginger Lily, LAdDM/ACdD, Dior Mitzah and the above-mentioned Fils de Dieu for lighter amber fare (and also Theorema). I’ve also pulled my Merveilles, which I was thinking were amber-y but I guess I’m mixing up amber and ambergris. There’s also Dior Dune if you’ve got that.

I’ve doused myself in Miller Harris Rose en Noir today, having just scored a FB on eBay. It was an unsniffed buy but I like it a lot; it’s very well-balanced and wearable. I had wondered whether it would be anything like FM Portrait of a Lady, which is the butchest rose I know (I can’t help feeling the name is a joke), but this one is much more restrained: not all that ‘noir’, really. Perfectly wearable as a day scent.

It’s a cold, damp and drizzly March day here in England. We have just seen the back of ‘the beast from the East’ but weather forecasters are predicting another icy blast next weekend!

It’s a terrific perfume, but a risk to buy unsniffed. I find it an oddly cold scent — there is, I think, something chilly about the overdose of patchouli — and I like it better in warmer weather, when the rose seems to bloom more lavishly. It’s got biceps on its biceps. Very wearable by a man, and almost too masculine for me.

Kately, this is a good description – and warning! I saw so many raves about POAL that it was a blind buy for me, and then I went, “Hunh???” It’s grown on me, for sure, and now I know I will keep the bottle, but it was not what I was expecting when I heard it was a “rose” perfume. Masculine is a good way to put it (though to me it’s also still predominantly feminine, if that isn’t a total contradiction!).

A dab of Micallef Gaiac here.

I thought maybe this year I would escape my difficult adjustment to the time change period, but no (buck up springpansy, it’s only an hour). Couldn’t go to sleep last night. Then awake for hours middle of the night. I have more job interviews this afternoon and really hoped for good sleep. Also had the kind of crazy dreams where you didn’t leave enough time to change clothes or wash your hair before the interview….

I’ve tried a number of Micallefs and have been a bit disappointed with longevity and oomph. There was a LE ylang one that I really love (M. Gold or something?) but others have not been keepers. How do you like the Gaiac? Is it very dry? My guess by the name that it won’t be for me but for some reason I keep feeling attracted to this house.

This morning is Coromandel EDT. I like it, but…. I keep toying with the idea of letting this one go and then I see the prices if I ever wanted to replace. Is that the right reason to hang onto it when the collection is getting out of control?

You’re right, I’d never justify buying another — and now I’m realizing I’m LUCKY to have ended up with this big bottle. It was silly of me to think of letting it go.

I think this is the most convincing for me of all — I have kicked myself over selling some things earlier (and at ridick low prices) that now I know I should’ve kept. I hope you got a good price for your BdI at least!!!

I just wrote to DTScott above that I don’t want to do something foolish now that my Future Self will regret… Being relatively new to this obsession, I’ve already experienced how my tastes have changed in just a few years. The regret thing is real! I’m glad you all reminded me!

That’s really true — it’s also one reason I was toying with letting it go since DAYUM it seems I could get a lot! Though I’d also been thinking of offering it this weekend for the swapmeet since I figured it would be appreciated here.

But after all the good sense that everyone gave me today I’ve decided to keep it!!! It’s already back on the storage shelf.

You’re standing…in…my…KUMQUATS!!! Ok, that’s enough musical theater for now.

I felt very gripey about the time change this morning when I had to get out of bed before the sun. I know many of you do that on a regular basis, but I am very bad at convincing my body to be useful before sunlight penetrates my eyes and forces me up. Nonetheless, I will admit that the new dawn was very beautiful (if painful to my eyes) as I drove to work.

Cafe Tuberosa today. No amber that I can detect. I’m trying to get rid of some samples, and the best way to do that is to polish off the samples that are nearly empty anyway! It feels terribly satisfying to throw the little vials away. I smell pretty delicious, but I don’t see a bottle of this in my future.

Did you do have to go through the time change this weekend as well? IIRC, sometimes Europe and the US do it on different weekends — which seems so completely crazy. As if changing clocks isn’t crazy enough, there’s this tacit admission that time is only a human-created illusion, and humans in different parts of the world can choose to manipulate time at different days on the calendar. Gah!

Your “magical incense and lavender” comment does of course send me scurrying to learn more. :-)

I think it’ll be Ambre des Merveilles for me today after shower.

Our big boy cat was next to me as I drank coffee. As I patted him I realized he felt scruffy, so I took the furminator to him. Ended up with a ball of fur the size of an orange. Yikes. I do need to be better about brushing.

I grabbed Samsara this morning because it was right in front when I opened my closet and I haven’t worn it all winter.

We seem to have a dead rodent under our kitchen island (in the base’s negative space). My contractor is coming over this afternoon and I’m hoping he can find a way to get to it without cutting a giant hole in the side but it has to come out; we can barely go in there and there’s no way I’m cooking in there at the moment. I read it can take weeks to get rid of the smell if you wait it out. I’m completely grossed out. Apparently we are lucky this is the first time we have had this happen, our current neighborhood is notorious for rodent issues. (Thanks for telling me AFTER we bought the house, neighbors!!). Any advice on how to clean up after we get rid of it?

OK, this may sound weird, but I have it on good authority (from a police officer) that the smell of burnt coffee grounds helps get rid of the smell of a dead body. I don’t see why that couldn’t work for a rodent body as well. Might be worth sticking some (preferably already used) coffee grounds into a pan and burning them for a while.

I may try that. Thanks everyone for the suggestions. My contractor did find the offenders – there were 2 – and they turned out to be in the crawl space that sits under the eat-in part of my kitchen. Hoping that the smell dissipates now that they have been removed!!

      Hi Clarissa,

I just ordered a bottle of Tempo and I should have it within the week. If you (or others) are interested in a split, you can email me in the land of comcast dottt net with arzeznik in front of it. I could split up to 30 mLs.

Yesterday I wore 2 amber perfumes – Armani Prive Ambre Orient in the morning and later, since I wanted something sweeter – En Voyage Perfumes Captured in Amber. So today I’m pausing the amber project and enjoying (hopefully) the last sunny day for the week (we’re promised rains – Yay!) in NVC Ashoka.

Monday is half-way done in the most places from where NTSers read this: hopefully, it wasn’t that bad – was it?

Encens Mythique today. Paper testing really didn’t do this one justice bc it’s magical on skin! A ridiculously good price convinced me to have him join his Guerlain siblings in my home. ???? On a sad note, it was my last purchase from Notino, which is no more. Bummer bc I got some great deals thru them.

Chanel took them to court last year for selling products without authorization. I am sure Guerlain followed as well. They are trying to figure out how they can do warehouse outside of the Us and ship to the US but for now they are done in the US. It is a bummer

This is my question. They are still operating in the European Union, which is where Chanel and LVMH are based, why weren’t they shut down as well? You certainly can’t buy those products on ebay over there. Very odd.

I’m wearing Olfactive Studio Lumière Blanche today. I think it’s fantastic, the top notes makes me tear up with joy. But then it’s gone after an hour. It’s the worse staying power I ever encountered. I thought it was something wrong with my nose, but no one else can smell it on me either after 60 minutes. It’s… not heartbreaking but a bit of a downer.

That really is a bummer. There are quite a few perfumes that were close to HG status for me, except for ridiculously short longevity and/or poor projection. One could continue to apply throughout the day, but that always feels like a fight to me. Sad.

Hello NST! I’m messed up from the time change too. I’d say that misery loves company on this, but I think we’d all be happier if we didn’t have to mess around with clocks twice a year. ⏰

SOTD = Atelier Cologne Ambre Nue, from the sample stash. It’s a nice scent, but I think I prefer my ambers on the dry side.

Participating in Dior Mitzah from the splitmeet (thanks, pixel!) This is my first time wearing rather than testing it. It is lovely, but also reminds me of another perfume which I can’t quite put my finger on, so that’s always a bug. I’m getting amber, fluffy orange and a bit of powder.

I read Angela’s piece on White Linen and have a few sprays from a vintage bottle on the back of my hand. It’s never really made sense to me, so I’m trying to “get” it after reading her article. I *think* I’m smelling what she has described…

After a brief respite of warm, sunny weather we’re back to our regularly scheduled spring tomorrow. :( :( Just when I was ready to retire my winter perfumes…

LuckyScent has had a Fort & Manle fragrance featured in their slideshow images on the home page of their site — I swear I am such a sucker, I want this perfume only because of the ad! It’s called Giverny and the image is mostly black with a white lotus flower. So striking. I know nothing of this house. They also have a scent called Confessions of a Garden Gnome which is so darned cute. I really don’t care for dabber samples or LuckyScent would have all my money.

Today I’ve been sampling Rag & Bone Oddity, which was one of the items included with a purchase recently from Twisted Lily. I really like this a lot! It’s very very DARK. Lots of dark pepper, vetiver, amber (Yes), incense, smoke, and something sweet. Others mention cardamom, leather, and licorice, but to me the sweet is almost more a vanilla smell, closely linked to the incense in particular. I don’t think I’ve ever seen this mentioned or discussed on NST, though perhaps I just didn’t notice. Nor have I seen this line in any stores. But tomorrow I’m thinking of taking a day off during my spring break to go to the Galleria where I haven’t set foot since maybe pre-Christmas, and perhaps I can find these in either Nordstrom or Neiman-Marcus. I need at least one nice new outfit for some upcoming big-deal lectures this spring (DON”T I, FRIENDS?).

Yes you DO need a new outfit! You need to look your BEST don’t you?!! :-D

The R&B you described sounds almost like an Amouage to me. I would have been skeptical that that brand would do a perfume I’d be interested in. Now I am going to keep an eye out for it!

Yes, absolutely you need a new outfit or 3! I also had no idea Rag & Bone made fragrances – I thought they were just overpriced clothes. Just looked at their website and the fragrances are not cheap either – $99 for a sample set! Big samples, but still.

I started a post earlier, but then I heard a sound of water dripping and saw that the huge plant at my desk was leaking! My work has a company provide us with plants and they come to water them regularly. A lady had just been in to water mine 30-60 min prior and must have overfilled. It was quite the effort for me to do damage control and move the super heavy pot off my desk.

Anyway, I wore Prada L’eau Ambree today, my first wearing from the travel spray I got from FragranceNet last month. I can barely smell it on me now, but it is lovely and easy to wear.

Happy Daylight Savings time to those who had to endure it today – good to see I wasn’t the only one suffering from that. What I don’t understand is why we can’t start later with it (April sounds fine) and end earlier (before Halloween so kids could trick or treat in the dark rather than in sunshine). Oh well. Will be kicking off amber week in Sacrebleu tonight – headed for a fancy dinner in Berkeley, which we’ve been talking about for years and finally managed to actually organize/reserve (it’s our wedding anniversary and spring break, so it’s all working out).
