It's Friday! But is it real, or is it Memorex? Our community project for today: wear a fragrance that photorealistically duplicates the smell of something else. Hat tip to Jalapeno for the idea!
What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.
I looked really hard for my CB I Hate Perfume At The Beach, but no joy, so I'm in Memory of Kindness. I am a walking tomato plant. Soon, I'll be a driving tomato plant — I'm off to fetch my son home from college for a week. That means no more posts today.
Reminder: 3/16 will be Amber Friday...wear a fragrance with an amber note.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Note: the ad above, fondly known as 'Blown Away Guy', was actually for Maxell (you can read about the campaign at Wikipedia), not Memorex. Memorex did Ella Fitzgerald breaking a glass with her voice, and you can find the original commercial here, or two later versions (one with Nelson Riddle) here.
Penhaligon’s. Ostara. Daffodil. Job done.
My favorite flower. NICE!!!!!
Ostara is so beautiful! So sad it was discontinued 🙁
It needed time and space to find the devotees. I remember seeing on QVC and thinking “they are not going to find the audience for this on QVC.”
I wish i would have kept my Ostara. I only gave it two tries.
Twins!
Triplets!
Sweet! I love daffodils.
Another daffy fan. I bought a few bunches last week and they were lovely.
Never tried Ostara either. I just never got around to it and the reviews were mixed.
I gave this one away, and I regret it all the time! Especially with spring approaching in NYC.
Tomato plant? Sounds like fun!
Borrowing your idea, Robin, about a holiday at the seaside. My most realistic sea scent is Heeley Sel Marin. I can smell the algae!
I wore Sel Marin last night, one of my favorites marine and summer scents. You smell fantastic!
Mine two!
Glad one of us got to the beach!
Walking down the street in NYC (maybe 2 kids in tow) wafting a scent that takes you far, far away.. to a place of sensuality, palaces, incense and love SOTD Alahiiiine
My make believe scent memory
…it could be your real memory in a few years.☺️
That would be nice!
Smelling beautiful today!
So lovely, my dear!
Thank you..Alahiiiine took a few wearings before I was under its spell
You smell so wonderful.
Robin – happy driving today! I am wearing Miu Miu L’eau Rosee, a birthday gift chosen by my 10 year old daughter. It is similar to the original but very light. I may have to do a side by side comparison to figure out the difference.
Thank you Katrina, made it safe & sound both ways.
How sweet of your daughter!
In L’Aromatica Kulfi. This is a real kulfi dessert scent to the point that every time I wear it I end up at a indian store or restaurant getting some. So lunch time, I am waiting for you….. Heavenly cardamon, saffron, vanilla and sandalwood.
Happy Friday everyone!
I LOVE kulfi!!! You smell soooooo good!!!!
Thank you! I am craving badly for it! ????
I have never even heard of L’Aromatica before now…Another brand that tempts me! LOL!
It is a indie house based in San Francisco Bay. All her perfumes are natural. I have tried many of them before. Madrone is fall in a bottle, Yellow Rose is also beautiful. Kulfi is my favorite of the line so far. They all have a nice sillage and longevity. You should give it a try for sure!
These all sound nice! Will have to check this line out someday…
Wow, that sounds incredible!
It is really good!
Oooo did you give in and buy some??? I still haven’t, but I’m pretty weak….
I do not want to be an enabler, but….. 😀
I’d like to sample this perfume and their Daphne. I have a couple limited edition perfume oils from many years ago when L’Aromatica was only selling on Etsy. They still smell great. One is Falling Leaves and the other is a pumpkin scent.
They have the discovery set with all the perfumes in their collection for $50. I am thinking about purchasing it. I have some samples already, but I would like to give a try to the whole line, which so far I am enjoying a lot.
I really don’t need any nore samples but this is perfumath free!
Now I want kulfi!
I had some at lunchtime! The more I eat, the more I want…
I had a sample of Kulfi a few years ago, which I quickly drained. I remember it as being really, really close to the scent of the dessert (which I love). You smell delicious!
Thank you!
Your SOTD story made me hungry too!
????
Have a wonderful time with your son!
Smell Bent January: early spring flowers. I can hear the birds chirping and smell that spring is on its way.
Thank you springpansy!
Happy FriYAY!!
Wearing Chanel No 5 EdT today…..a scent memory tied so strongly to my grandma that I could almost swear she’s close by. She’s been gone for almost 25 years, but this beautiful smell brings her right back to me. Happy to be one of millions of people who have worn and shared this scent for the last 97 years! 🙂
Beautiful tribute!
Scent twins! Although I have no one to associate with the fragrance, as I’m not aware of anyone in my past or present ever wearing it.
Enjoy your memories : ) So nice for you to be able to make this connection across the years!
So beautiful connection to your grandma. You smell wonderful!
What a lovely scent memory.
I forgot about the community project, as I almost always do, but happen to be wearing Hermes Epice Marine, which is pretty convincingly ocean-like, in this stage, at least. Welcome home, son!
Yes it is — not my ocean, but somebody’s ocean!
I am happy to report my daughter’s fever is under 100 this morning and it’s Friday. 😉
I am going to wear two dueling scents from my Maison de la Vanille sampler this morning…just not sure which ones yet…
Good news about your daughter!
We have the bug at our house too….My middle kid had 102 fever yesterday, and still 100 today….UGH!
HURRY UP SPRING!!!
I hope she feels 100% better soon!
This winter has been so hard with colds, fevers, flu! I don’t remember being this under the weather my self in a really really long time
Yup it seems like this year’s viruses leave no one untouched. I had colleagues and friends who are usually unphased by cold or flu call in sick. Myself included, i also stayed at home for two or three days (after a cold that seemd to last almost 1,5 month).
Correction: unfazed
But i dont even know if its right to use it in this context…
Good to hear! Maybe 100% by Sunday?
Happy Friday and good news on the fever dropping! We need to meet up before I leave and do a vanilla recap.
Glad to hear She-ra fille is on the mend.
I chose Azemour les Oranges, a photorealistic representation of something that is probably pretty hard to find in real life – an orange grove caught when the trees still have some lingering orange blossoms, but also lots of ripe oranges too, and damp moss clinging to the bark. And maybe a gorgeous, shirtless, slightly sweaty farmworker gathering the fruit. 🙂
Mmm, I was already enthusiastic about the orange grove smells, and then your last line got me very eager to try this!
Wow! It sounds good! I also need to try this.
That is an enticing description all around!
Great ad copy for this scent! 🙂
I’d buy this!
Another scent on the “must sample in the near future list” – I’m a sucker for a good orange scent but find them hard to come by.
Uh oh… that description could make me add another perfume to the “sample” list.
This morning I’m wearing Mimosa pour Moi from L’Artisan. It’s pretty realistic smelling, almost to the point of making me want to sneeze. I’ve just spent 20 minutes looking up mimosa online and learning a lot. We have mimosas in Texas but they’re pink not yellow like the ones most people associate with this name. I think the pink mimosas must smell about the same. While to me they are very delicate and beautiful, come to find out they are an invasive species and very fast-growing, which makes them all the more of a pest. Now I feel sad about this scent. The bright yellow ones, which I’ve seen in England, are awfully pretty and cheery. Hope people have a cheery Friday and a nice weekend. Next weekend is our spring break–Hurray!
The pink-flowered things we call “mimosa” in the US are a completely different species. (I like them. They smell nice, too, but not the same at all.)
I am wearing Absolue Pour de Soir and smell like a smutty beehive full of naughty bees.
You also smell wonderful. That scent is breathtaking
🙂 oh, that gave me a good chuckle, thanks
My original title for my master’s thesis was “Slutty bees”. My advisor made me change it. (It was probably for the best.)
Your advisor is no fun. 😉
I agree. And didn’t appreciate a really catchy title.
Officially wearing Honour woman, thanks to a generous Nster. Which I’m enjoying very much. I sprayed a bit of Orange Sanguine on the back of my hand for today’s project. I think it smells like Orange Laffy Taffy, more than real oranges.
Oh, I should add that last night I saw Lucky Scent has Amouage 20% off. Code Amouage20
OH WOW, I’m going there now!
Also, Honour is one of my favourite Amouage scents, one of only three I own (but that is about to become four!).
I have to decide whether to push the button for Opus VIII which is now down from $360 to $288–whew–still a lot….
How do you feel about Fate? I’m tempted.
Tempting fate…. (lol)
Story of my life…
I thought of you when I saw this..this is the one you want, right?
http://www.cafleurebon.com/mugler-cuir-les-exceptions-impertinent-jacques-herault-2015-fragrance-review-leather-and-spice-draw/
Maybe you will get lucky and win the full bottle 🙂
Yes, that’s the one! I watch this channel sometimes too, but missed this one. Thanks! Funny, I thought of you watching a video on notes the other day on Fragranceview channel ( sorry, don’t know how to link, without my son, lol) anyway, if you don’t already know it, it’s a cool channel.
I love Peter (Fragranceview) and watch him all the time 🙂
Not in keeping with today’s project, but I’m in No. 5 (EDP) again today.
Enjoy your son Robin! I picked mine up last night with a fever of 102… home from college for at least the weekend with the flu despite the vaccination. Poor kid.
Hope your son feels better soon!
Oh dear. Hope your kid’s better soon.
Poor guy! At least it’s probably more comfortable to be sick at home. Wishing him a speedy recovery!
This mess is neverending! My kid has fever and nasty symptoms too. HURRY UP Spring!
Yes! Can’t come soon enough. Hope your child is better today.
Oh ICK! Best wishes for a speedy recovery to all the sick folks.
Oh no! I hope that fever has come down a bit by now.
Thanks all! Happy to report the fever is down this morning from 102.8 last night. Hoping he continues to improve throughout the day.
Wishing all of our loved ones a speedy recovery!
I debated amongst my Demeter and CB I Hate Perfume decants before finally deciding on Slumberhouse Pear + Olive.
This scent perfectly captures the 2 things in its name – rich without being greasy and fruity without being sickly sweet.
Happy Friday.
I saw that Slumberhouse come up on ebay once and was tempted, but got scared by the olive. I’m still intrigued whenever I hear it mentioned. Pear is a note I’m always pulled by yet have often been disappointed.
Agree the scent captures them both perfectly. It was a weird but pretty good scent. Glad I got to try it.
I pulled out my spring scents over the weekend, so my decant of Ostara was ready to go! I really love this, as well as Night-Scented Stock; not sure why Penhaligon’s discontinues the good stuff so quickly . . .
Smelling great! Ostara is a beauty.
I am wearing Atelier Jasmin Angelique, which always reminds of hot smoke coming from a cup of jasmine green tea.
I have always really liked the aroma of jasmine green tea. Sounds like I should check this one out next time I’m at Sephora.
Is it L’Artisan Parfumeur’s Caligna, with notes of sage, fig and pine needles?
Or did someone around here just take a bite of a really good nectarine, the perfect kind you get at the height of a New Jersey summer, that my mom used to track down at farm stands and leave in bowls around the house?
I’ve no idea why my scent hallucination for Caligna so totally ignores the listed notes, but I love it.
Mmmm, both descriptions sound good to me – will have to check this one out!
What a fabulous hallucination, though.
I love the bath gel of it
I am in Ambra Aurea this AM. Struggling to connect to the Friday project though… Potent stuff the AA. I think I acquired my decant at the last swap meet. I smell like a cloud of salted, spiced, sweet amber oil.
My totally unremarkable remark about decants: There are some 5 mls that I blow through in a few wearings. And others, like this, that one needs so little that they last a very long time.
Still haven’t taken a shower yet and I am still in L’Heure Bleue. Just filed my taxes and getting a nice refund. That means that I can keep Amazon Prime and get Au Coeur du Desert. I keep debating on if I should go through Luckyscent or go through Andy Tauer’s website. I’ve used both and with the shipping through Andy Tauer’s website, the cost would work out the same.
yes, I’m surprised AT’s website offers reasonable shipping to US – I guess it depends if you prefer more AT samples or non-AT samples? Or check exchange rate?
I checked the US rate and it is cheaper on Andy Tauer’s website. With the shipping and all, it turns out that ordering from his website is a little cheaper. I love Andy Tauer’s work even though some of his work doesn’t work out, so I don’t mind have all AT samples.
It’s better for Andy if you order directly from his website, distributors take a large (up to 80%) of his profit margins. I always buy from him directly after I found that out.
Gosh there are amazing descriptions of scents today! I’m in Slowdive which opens with a touch of cinnamon and then goes fully HONEY on me in a way that is always so surprising. I get none of the tobacco that others do. This is just HONEY, as if I was smelling the pot. It’s everything but the sticky part.
It’s nice seeing all the Ostara references today, I may dig that one up to ride along with you later.
Slowdive is amazing! I tried it a couple of days ago with some caution thinking it would be too much, but it is a perfect honey scent, soooooo delicious!
I’ve inadvertently continued the Memorex project by dabbing Xerjoff Renaissance onto my other arm — perhaps the best citrus opening ever?? It’s full and almost sweet, like fresh-squeezed orange juice. The first blast does not last long but it’s making me re-dab over and over for more. I’m not usually a citrus girl but this one, mmmm.
Slowdive is the purest, strongest, most photorealistic honey I’ve ever smelled! It’s gorgeous. I wish I lived in a colder climate, so I could have the chance to wear it more often. You smell divine!
For me Slowdive opens on a pure whisky note which lingers for maybe 30 seconds, and then turns to pure multilayered honey for a solid 8 hours.
Slowedive is amazing isn’t it? I had been wondering what it would be like in warmer weather since it didn’t really last today as I had hoped. Any comments on what Slowdive does in the heat? I don’t get the whiskey though I’m not sure I’d like it if I did (Xerjoff Irisss opens like that to me and it’s challenging).
Slowdive lasts all day on me. I don’t get whiskey from it, just a hint of tobacco then tons of honey.
I’m sort of scent cousins with SheriG above. I’m wearing Lush’s (sadly discontinued) Orange Blossom, which is exactly the scent of the orange trees in my backyard when they’re in bloom. It is in reality and in this perfume, a glorious smell.
Oh, but there is something really lovely about orange blossoms in bloom on a warmish day!
Oh, I love Lush’s Orange Blossom. I wish they hadn’t discontinued it.
I should dig out mine!
Love the smell of orange blossoms in Florida!
Demeter Gingerale, the most unbelievable thing: it smells carbonated, and I can’t even imagine how that was done, but it’s thrilling and hilarious in equal measures.
Such a good one.
I was going to do a dab of Box of Eels extrait from my tiny bottle, but I accidentally dribbled some on my forearm.. I cry. But the rest of the day will be spent in a cloud of sandalwoodsy fumes in the privacy of the study 🙂
You smell great!
Hate to say it, but I chose Geisha Vanilla Hinoki (from recent splitmeet!), for its photorealistic take on a citronella candle. Yes, today I’m a walking citronella candle. Hoping it changes to something different over time as this is my first full wearing, I had just dabbed previously.
Happy Friday!
(Enjoy picking up your son, Robin, and a whole week with him!)
Ha! Though, I actually like the smell of citronella. Save it for summer! Might be useful. I actually wear Diptyque Geranium Odorata outside on summer evenings. I think it does, indeed, repel mosquitoes.
Haha. Too funny.
Citronella is a strong scent, and I have this image of flies stuck in the candle wax their fate sealed.
Yes, I get citronella candle too!
You smell great! For me the citronella note looses the initial brightness and settles into a realistic cypress like the trees in my neighborhood. Sometimes I see cypress cones on the ground so I pick one up and give it a sniff. It’s got a citrus aspect that regular pine cones do not have.
The opening of VH is bug spray on me but I am not giving it up just yet
Eewww.
I’m not giving up yet either. Too many fans of this one 😉
Was it Victoria of BoisdeJasmin who wrote about someone comparing her No. 5 to a certain brand of bug spray and she was so intrigued she went and fiund it and found – yes – they’d imitated No. 5 as a functional fragrance?
I guess I mean is it ‘nice’ bug spray or revolting bug spray… LOL
Ugh, that sounds terrible!
Re: Amouage sample project with husband,
Yes i am blessed with a guy who is not afraid of perfume!
We started yesterday evening and we decided to use the following method:
1. Pick a fragrance (we chose Fate for the first run)
2. We both spray Man version on left arm, and Woman version on right arm.
3. We both mumble / shout / whisper / yawn / sneeze our impressions (i take notes) while watching Netflix, haha, and compare the development every 15-30 minutes
Fate Man
Mr Jiji said: i smell red, black an grey (he ‘smells colours’ first, kinda fascinating).
We both agreed on ‘spice cabinet’, cumin, liquorice. I also picked immortelle.
On both of us it turned quite woody after 1,5 hours, cedar and incense. Nicely done but not very special so far.
But itt lasted til morning on me, and ….surprise!!! the immortelle returned, smoothing out the woods. Making this an unexpected but wonderful dry down. (On mr Jiji it was almost gone).
Fate Woman
Mr jiji on the opening “this is very feminine”. Colours: white, yellow and later on more green. We both said rose and narcissus. Mr jiji said peach.
I detected cinnamon, pepper and of course, vanilla.
On his skin it was more ‘open’ (room to breath), with the greens (patch/moss?) more prominent. While I got more powdery vanilla with hints of incense.
1,5 hour later he called it “totally wearable for a guy”.
I wish it was more chypre on my skin, (maybe the amount of sprays influences the way it develops, but yes, skin chemistry def plays a role). I could still smell it this morning when i woke up. Totally cosy musky vanilla.
A Plus here for Amouage for making the vanilla weareable (lots of vanillas are scrubbers on me). On mr jiji’s skin it was gone this morning.
This is a fun project!
(Sorry, no memorex experience today, had Soliflore Narcissus by Dame in mind, but Sycomore callled…)
Gosh, how fun! You’re a lucky lady.
best post ever! love this!! Looking forward to more his/her impressions 🙂
Thank you! Yes will do my best to post all our findings.
Love this!
Thank you! Yes its fun to do.
We are now doing Memoir. I probably will report back tomorrow, because I already found out those Amouages take their sweet time when it comes to development.
I’ll be very interested to hear what the late drydown was like for the each of you. I think that may be Memoir’s finest hour(s) — it’s where it is most distinctive IMO.
What a nifty experiment, and the added bonus of synaesthesia makes it even more interesting to read about.
He is not convinced it is synaesthesia, but he thinks these are just associations that come faster than other ones.
Either way its a fun experiment! His skin is way warmer than mine, it makes for interesting differences. So far he has the better and smoother experiences haha.
What an awesome project! Pls continue to post your results.
Will do!
So much fun to read about the experiences you both had! I hope you’ll do more posts like this as you work your way through the perfumes.
I also vote for more of these, please!!
Oh how cool, that the two of you are doing this, and that your experiences with the same scents are so different! It’s fun to hear about.
Such a fun project!
I will be putting on my CB At the Beach 1966; luckily I have a large sample size so the bottle is fairly easy to find.
It’s supposed to warm up to about 10 C this weekend during the day. Snow be gone!
Have a great Friday everyone!
Yay, glad someone is wearing it! Enjoy.
It’s a good one; kind of reminds me of old-school Coppertone. Unfortunately it doesn’t last too terribly long on me but I’m trying anything to will Spring here.
Maybe I can layer with Bain du Soleil orange gelee next time.
I need to try that one. I enjoy a beachy scent from time to time and am always looking for the perfect one.
I’ve tried quite a few.. Beach by Bobbi Brown, Fire Island, Guerlain Terracotta and At the Beach 1966. Obviously I’d rather be at the beach 🙂
How do you like Fire Island? I’ve been waiting to try that one?
I like Fire Island. It has a bit to of musk in the base and it is a nice beachy floral; no coconut notes. It somehow radiates around you; the last time I wore it was in the middle of summer when it was nice and humid out.
If you like beachy scents it’s worth a try!
Safran Troublant for me, which is a photorealistic representation of pure perfection.
I concur. ????
Such a great way to describe it! It really is perfect.
Hey twin!
Hey there! You smell great!
SOTD is a bit of FM Une Rose which smells less like a real rose and more precisely like a stock photo of a single dark burgundy rose, perhaps (cheesily) laid across a black grand piano keyboard.
(My other choice for actual dewy, cool morning pink rose was SL Sa Majeste…)
You smell amazing! And your description of Une Rose is so precise and correct to me too. Definitely a stock image of a single burgundy rose.
Thanks! And maybe a crystal clear glass of red wine resting in top of the piano (cue Kenny G here).
Oooh, love KennyG!
Mr Blown Away Guy hung on many a dorm room wall back in the late 80’s. I had mix tapes on both Maxell and Memorex and I bet I could find an old one or two if I rummaged through some boxes in the basement. RIP the days of the mixtape.
Attempting to recreate the scent of the Gonesh sticks I burned in college I am in LeLabo Gaiac 10 layered over SL Feminite Du Bois. It’s close.
I am from the mix tape generation as well. They might as well call us that – mix tape generation – its so much more descriptive. Such a relatively short lived phenomena. But, the experience of making and sharing mixed tapes was so much more personal and interactive than other music sharing options since, imho – even if the quality was poor, the experience was rich.
I think that’s a great idea for a generation name – it was such a specific time and task. I remember spending hours and hours crafting mix tapes to create a particular message. There was one debate between “Bring on the dancing horses” and “Changes” that made me have to consult my older brother, who voted for Train in Vain by The Clash instead.
Train in vain! Perfect ????
The whole mix-tape experience–making them, giving them, agonizing over what to put on them, listening to them, etc. just brings back so many memories!
Nice combo! Right now I kind of miss burning incense.
I don’t have a tape player, but I still have some of my high school BF’s mix tapes. He was fond of Tom Petty, David Bowie, and The Go-Go’s to name a few.
I use to make mixed tapes for my boyfriends and girlfriends back in the day…memories!!!
PG16 Jardins de Kerylos….sample from the very generous ScentSpirit!
Well, its very nice but I’m not sure what I am smelling. I suppose fig leaf if the notes are to be believed. I guess I would say a light woody scent? Seems maybe these are notes that might be more familiar to Europeans? Anyway, very nice, but not very long lasting.
SotD = Ostara
Agree with Bob, Ostara is a fun choice for today. The scent captures the green nectar-y sweet richness of spring narcissus and hyacinth without turning unctuous.
Trader Joe’s has their bunches of cut daffodils now, I must buy some soon.
Loved today’s project. Seeing the Memorex ads and Maxell’s Blown Away Guy takes me back to the days of mix tapes, teen-aged optimism, and RL Lauren perfume in that beautiful burgundy cube. Mine was a splash bottle that I spilled most times I used it. I reeked of cut grass and lilacs. Good memories.
I love TJ’s! One of my favorite grocery stores
My family runs on TJ’s groceries! 😀
Oh, that beautiful glass cube of Lauren. That is the Memorex smell of high school. I still have my original bottle tucked away….I should pull it out and see if it matches my memories….
Oh, I do hope Lauren takes you back. 🙂
I had that poster, back in the day. But then, who didn’t 😉
Work has been madness since I got back from the Spring Break Wedding In Cancun. I’ve been doing leathers most of this week… not really with the project, but hey, I’m doing well to remember to wear perfume at all some days. Wednesday was Cuir de Lancome; Thursday was Lillyjo’s Leather (Cuir Impertinent) and today is Kanuka and Nozknoz’s Leather (Skive).
TGIF!!!!! Fingers crossed I won’t have to work ALL weekend. Urg.
How was the outfit received? Did you pass inspection?
Will report on the wedding this weekend when I have more time (theoretically) 🙂
Oh please do, I can’t wait to hear this story!
Oh, I love skive. I might need some more now autumn is almost here. How was the wedding? I hope it was a lot of fun and they all loved your outfit.
Have you tried more of the J Hannah & Co scents? She’s the perfumer behind Skive. Tigerlily in SF carries her line, and she has her own website. I quite liked Upton which smelled to me like a greener less smoky version of Skive.
I was interested in sunset boulevard and more skive but had trouble finding shipping. I need to look into it again…Canoe and J Hannah no longer/ don’t ship to NZ so I will look at tigerlily. Thanks!
Can’t wait to hear back about the wedding!
Hope you don’t have to work, I’m dying to hear how the bridezilla wedding came off.
Happy Friday!
SOTD: Jasmine by Molinard- which is a perfect musky jasmine; the rose & white musk amps it up. Not indolic, and not green.
2) I just bought jeans at Buffalo Exchange ( second hand clothing) They are Athleta brand. I love them- they fit perfectly, with no sagging, and the texture of the denim cloth is soft, soft, soft. When I looked up the website I found out that these jeans are sold for $98.
But I bought these barely worn ones for $20.
*cries* I wanna another pair!
So funny, just yesterday I overheard a colleague gushing about BE and I went and marked it on Google maps to visit. I’ve never heard of it.
Nice job on the jeans! Finding the best fit can be so infuriating.
I’d also recommend Crossroads Trading Co, which is near the 26th st Buffalo Exchange. I’ve found some good higher end stuff for cheap at that location.
I am gonna check this store out as well, and also look on eBay.
Thanks! I’m not good with these types of stores but “Second time around” has gotten me more interested.
At Sephora the other day, I got some Sol de Janeiro lotion because I was so charmed by its over-the-top, sweet scent, so since then, I’ve been wearing scents that complemented it. Yesterday it was Salt Caramel, and today, it’s Fils de Dieu. Coincidentally, both work for this week’s project!
Yummm.
I love the smell of their Bum Bum cream! I’d buy the body mist, but reviews say it has zero longevity. ????
This is from a few days ago, so you might not see it. But I took a chance on the spray despite the reviews making me nervous. I sprayed it before bed and could still smell it in the morning. Everyone’s skin is different, but you might get lucky!
I’m wearing Dzing! today. It’s not a photorealistic memory, but it does bring hay to mind (although hay that has seen a lot of crazy things). I just wore it because it smells so darn good.
Yes it does!
Serge Lutens Fleurs de Citronnier (specifically the one that was being sold in 2007)
Smells exactly like I remember standing in springtime under a blossoming lemon tree in my grandma’s courtyard. Uncanny.
Wow, sounds like heaven!
I wish I shared that scent memory, but I’ve never been around a blossoming lemon tree. I do love Fleurs de Citronnier though, and my bottle is similar in age.
I’m wearing Belles Rives, from Clarissa’s split. Oooh, this is nice!! Iris lovers: have you tried it?
Happy TGIF!
Lucas (Chemist in the Bottle) had a nice review for this perfume, and he likes it a lot. For me it was a little more unisex than I’d prefer. And I think it’ll wear better in warmer weather – so I plan to try it again later.
Undina, thank you for the pointer to Lucas’ review; as much as he loves iris (you, too!) I should have know that y’all would have tried it. Hope you like it better in warm weather.
Great photo! I’m in TF Amber Absolute and comparing it to the Oil Perfumery dupe. Report later.
Pls do! I really really want Amber Abolute….???? But I also really need to stop buying perfume….????
Me too! Comparing the two, I would say there is maybe a touch less incense in the Oil Perfumery dupe, but it’s really close. I definitely plan on going with the dupe when my AA decant runs out as the bottles are crazy expensive on ebay.
I’ve done very poorly in this week’s CP. I’m wearing Hiram Green Voyage, from a sample kindly provided to me by Laura. Only three HG scents left for me to try! Though at this rate, he’ll come out with something else by the time I get around to them. I don’t even know why I have such a strange fascination with HG. Voyage smells like a vintage chypre to me, though the Internet doesn’t seem to agree that that’s how it’s supposed to smell. So really my nose is just a weirdo.
Speaking of Memorexy things though! I have been meaning to mention this for the past month! I highly advocate the Burt’s Bees Orange Essences Facial Cleanser. Smells exactly like you’re peeling an orange right in front of your face and then rubbing the peel all over your face. It is the BEST. It’s kind of thick–like a soft beeswax consistency–and I don’t really know how well it cleans (I assume it’s fine), but it smells so good that it really doesn’t matter.
I had mixed feelings about Voyage. I love “vintage” scents, especially chypres. But this one had something I didn’t love. Not sure what the offending note was.
So you also find it to be a vintage-y chypre?? That makes me feel so much better!
I also don’t love Voyage, but I can’t stop smelling it. I dislike vintage-style scents (and actual vintage scents), but they are so darned fascinating. Does that make sense? That I dislike them but want to keep sniffing them?
Ok, first i have so many funny replies to that last sentence, but I’m just going to say, yes it makes total sense. When something is fascinating, you keep going back. Boring isn’t very compelling.
Like when you try on a really stinky sample and you run and shove your arm under your husband’s face and say, Smell this, it’s horrible!
Ahahahahaha you two are the BEST! Yes, lillyjo, I had lots of things to say that I thought were maybe not NST-appropriate. Yes, Cazaubon, I do that so much!!!! The boyfriend asks, “Is there, like, a support forum for people like us?”
This makes me feel so much better that I missed out on Voyage! And I also agree with everything you said about vintage. I have acquired a number of them because I feel like I should have them, in order to appreciate the origins of this whole obsession I’ve developed, yet there are few that I actually like (Joy being one). That being said, when a perfume is very modern yet with a vintage-y vibe, I may fall head over heels!
Wearing CdG Lily for the project today.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8oWOsxlYtPg
Great video! I particularly like his explanation of the smell of a real flower compared to the smell of a soliflore perfume.
I liked the video too. Steve is very easy to listen to. Thanks for posting. 🙂
I hope you have a happy week with your son, Robin.
I am wearing JM primrose and rye which is pretty but I don’t I would be able to pick out the rye or primrose without the benefit of being given its name. I bought it and some other JM fields when I was at my mothers as I’m a sucker for grasses and grains. Later today I am going to a botanical illustration drawing class ….for the next ten Saturdays. I picked some yarrow and yorkshire fog from my walk yesterday . I really just want to draw the plants I encounter up on the hill so I can make a kind of illustrated map . Also collected boletes yesterday and had them in a risotto last night. Happy weekend everyone and keep well!
Hey Kanuka,
Here’s another book you may be interested in. Actually, it is impossible to order–I think the waiting lists must be huge because it has been ‘temporarily out of stock’ everywhere since last November.
But anyway!!! It is an amazing book of maps of California, and flora and fauna, hand-painted, 600 pages. The author/artist is affiliated with Juniper Ridge perfume company somehow as well–I once knew how…

and

What an amazing book and project. I know that 600 pages sounds a lot but when you think about the size of California, the changes of seasons, weather, floods and fires…you know, it coukd be a 20000 page book. Just on my walks this week I have noticed that the pines now have big bright green cones, masses of fly agarics in various shades of red and irange, boletes, blackberries, brown rollrims, russet red dying ferns, bidi bids in flower, a dead and rotting blackbird, tomtits, fantails, karaka berries from green to yellow, crocuses…..and heaps more in what is probably only 5km of ambling along. Don’t you love watercolour paint sets…so beautiful. Thank you.
Thanks for posting those links. That guy’s insta has some cool stuff too

Thank you Kanuka, and enjoy your drawing class!
Not participating in Memorex because I have to sit in close quarters soon and felt Rose Royale would be too much for neighboring (student) noses – so I’m in eau chic, which I think is just great! And a blind buy, to boot….never would have picked it up based on the reviews, but it came with the eau fraiche trio and it’s fabulous.
Next task: Husband is running out of Terre D’Hermes and I want to replace it – perhaps with a Nicolai scent because I like the house and want to support it. Happy Friday and I hope all those flu and cold bugs will scuttle away over the weekend!
I would recommend Eau de Sport but have not smelled a new version (my bottle is in the prior name, Balle de Match).
I was thinking of that one! Thanks for the suggestion. New York sounds like it might be too classic/traditional even though it’s so highly reviewed.
Sitting in a campus movie theater with 4 tweens/teens. Schedule said they’d play the greatest showman but they got the wrong film and now it’s Daddy’s home 2. ..oh boy.
SOTD is Magie Noire by Lancome. Happy Friday schmoopies.
You’re schmoopie! 😀
Happy Friday, and you smell great.
SOTD is SL’s L’Orpheline. I feel very nostalgic when I wear this perfume, but don’t know why.
I guess that I’m not a huge fan of photorealistic scents. I went with Smellbent Florist Fridge. It really does mimic that awesome smell. A green floral with plastic doll head.
My only other option was Tearose by PW but since I use it as a powderoom airfreshner, I wasn’t feeling it.
Happy Friday/Saturday everyone!
I think I’m sold now, you have me lemming this…and the plastic doll head is just a bonus!
It is so affordable if you buy their 4ml travel size for $8 to try it out. It is really free by perfumista standards.
done! well, this weeks project has me lemming several fragrances, I think I might be a photo-realistic fragrant person, who knew? I DO want to smell like a tomato plant, and Kulfi and many other things 🙂
You’re an excellent budget-minded enabler, Petunia!
????
I think that’s the most apt description yet!
I wanted to smell like the daphne that is blooming right now all through my neighborhood in Seattle so I’m wearing Wit. My back up choices of Memory of Kindness and Ostara are making a nice showing here today.
Has anyone tried the new Antica Farmasista Daphne Flower perfume or other products? Or L’Aromatica Daphne? I’d like to try these and compare to find my favorite daphne perfume before I decide whether to buy a bottle of Wit after I use up my decant.
You smell great! I have no other recommendations for daphne but hope you’ll report back if you ever find anything to rival Wit.
I like Wit but, to my nose, it didn’t come close enough to the wonderful smell of Daphne. I’m also curious to try the perfumes you’ve mentioned. Whoever finds a perfect Daphne first should tell the rest 🙂
A la Nuit today. To my nose it smells exactly like night-blooming jasmine. So beautiful!
You smell fabulous!
I’m in Jo Malone Sweet Milk that reminds me of the condensed milk from my childhood (I told that story 7 years ago on my blog, if anybody is curious: https://undina.com/2011/05/27/sweet-milk-jo-malone/ ).
Two people who, from time to time, object to some of my perfumes, are not in the office today – so I’m in a Sweet Milk heaven 🙂
I love that one…should have bought a full bottle when I had the chance.
Repeating because I couldn’t resist wearing Oeillet Bengale again. That first blast is so carnationy….
Love carnation. Added to my sample list.
The scent is actually rose, but it mimics carnation. Spicy!
I like spicy rose too!
Bigarade Concentree. I smell like I’ve been peeling oranges! The zest and pith notes are incredibly realistic, imo. Love!
I love that one on paper, but it does something awful on my skin, I don’t know why.
Wearing Crabtree & Evelyn’s Jasmine de Provence today. This smells as close to the scent of jasmine in Spain in 1990 as I could possibly find (back in 1991, when I tracked down the bottle). I had been to Spain and had this wonderful experience sniffing jasmine in the air everywhere. I came back to the US and auditioned many jasmine oils and perfumes before finding the one that really smelled right. I still have a half bottle of this discontinued scent, and though I don’t wear it often, I still love it.
How nice!
This perfume sounds wonderful.
I have an ancient bottle of this too, it was really well done.
Sigh. Yes I just went to ebay and bought this. Someone on ebay is selling one for $500 (obv that’s not the one I bought).
I’m sorry/not-sorry that I have been spending so much time on NST lately.
WAT!?!? $500???? Ridiculous!
I’m wearing Desarmant today, the most realistic lilac scent I’ve found.
It’s Saturday morning here, so I have a little more time to read NST over breakfast, it’s so nice not to be rushing off to work. I don’t have much that I’d call photo-realistic, but I think Annick Goutal’s Le Chevrefeuille is very good imitation of honeysuckle. It doesn’t last at all, but worth regular re-applications, so that’s what I’ll be wearing today.
Oh, that is a lovely scent. I hope you have a great, relaxing Saturday!
You smell great!
When I tried that scent, it immediately brought me back to my childhood. I think my mom used a honeysuckle scented soap or shampoo when I was young
(was honeysuckle a thing in the 70s/early 80s? Havent smelled it that much in bath and body products after that period)
Yes, honeysuckle was a thing back then! I remember a few perfumes and maybe a shampoo with that scent here in the US. Childhood memories for me.
I hadn’t picked a fragrance before checking NST now, so today I managed to actually meet a Friday challenge! I chose Bruno Fazzolari Monserrat. It is the most photorealistic grapefruit I have ever smelled, down to that slight funky mustiness. It’s such a surprising and realistic scent, and I’m glad I’m wearing it today since it is unexpectedly sunny and summery outside today.
Ooh sounds delightful!
Demeter’s Wet Garden for me this morning which smells like…a lush wet garden after summer rain has fallen.
Scent of the week has been salt water, sunscreen and happiness. I’m going for the real version –a vacation in St Kitts. I so don’t want to go back to New York tomorrow…..
Oh that sounds wonderful!
Wow, lucky you! Have a safe trip home.
SOTD = Soivohle’s Lilacs and Heliotrope EdP.
A case of “Exactly What it Says on the Label/Bottle”. To fill in a few more details, the lilacs are the pale purple (lilac) ones on a large bush. Some of them are open, while lots of fat buds are scattered among the blooms. It is late March or maybe early April, and it has rained either in the overnight hours or wee hours of the morning. So there is a hint of that “After the Rain” smell I remember from Colorado.
Your scent sounds lovely.
Thank you! ????
Not really part of the CP, I chose SSS Fig Tree today. I have never actually smelled a real fig tree but I love my travel spray of this one.
It is a very realistic smell of a freshly broken fig twig. My travel spray went off, unfortunately. And now I cannot get a new one. So do not wait too long – enjoy your perfume before it spoils.
You all smell sooooo good!! My goal to reduce the perfume media, and therefore lemmings, has been, well, only somewhat effective. I have still been lurking and lemming. Sigh. But I had to comment today because of the picture you used, Robin! I have undertaken the task of researching and purchasing the a/v components to get our prewired audio up and running (when we bought the house, we had no idea it would have been a good idea to get the components included in the purchase. Lesson learned!) I have learned so much and am quite excited about it, and am hoping once I have it set up, it will be blowing our socks off and our hair back 🙂
SOTD is Traversee du Bosphore with mid-day spritz of Cuir de Lancôme. Not on-project, but mmmmm I smell good!
What fun, even if it’s a pain! Good luck getting the proper blown away effect. Meanwhile, you do smell fantastic.
Very late to the party but I’ve enjoyed reading about everyone’s exploits today. I started the day with a light spritz of Safran Troublant (rice pudding with rose petals). Needed to go buy a birthday present for my MIL so ventured to the mall, where I sampled the new JM English Fields collection. Wasn’t blown away by any of them but they’re nice enough. Ended up buying Crocus and Honey for the MIL. Came home later to find my new bottle of Apres L’Ondee waiting on the porch. Yay! So now I smell like a little bit of everything.
Circus and Homey sounds like a delightful combo. Hope your MIL enjoys it!
I’m Concentre d’Orange Vert which is perfect for sunny Florida days like today and also makes me think I should make a cocktail out of orange juice and vodka muddled with mint or something! I think it’s delicious smelling. Hope everyone has had a great week. I’m enjoying my time in Florida for both work and also have been thrilled to see my guy of course! Happy weekend, all!
SOTD = Annick Goutal Heure Exquise EDP
This is a photorealistic version of Chanel No. 19 EDP, with an added vintagey vibe.
Smelled in the wild – Rose Jam perfume or at least, a photorealistic version of it!
At work, we have phone rooms that are tiny enclosed rooms with a phone + a computer or a telepresence monitor that doubles as a computer. Anyway, there are 2 near where I sit but they were occupied. I went to the next section of the floor and opened the door to an empty one and almost gagged that I had to walk right out and blurted out to the person sitting right outside OH MY GOd, what is that horrible smell? It had to be someone’s perfume that was animalic musky skanky. I went back a minute later and could not take it and decided to use an empty office instead. Later in the afternoon, I relayed my experience to my co-workers and they were amused at my description. I took the opportunity to say I love perfume but what I smelled in there must be banned. One co-worker said She loves perfume and another one said she hates perfume. OK, I now have another person with whom I can discuss perfume-related stuff. Woop!
Update on the slip and fall – Thanks for your comments yesterday. I keep Arnica gel* at home and used it on the elbow and took two Tylenols. Other than slight soreness on the right side of my body and elbow that is starting its technicolor journey, I was lucky, very lucky it was not worse! I went to Wegmans to get Arnica pills and will have the 5 pellets 3x a day (if I remember).
* I got wistful yesterday looking for the Arnica gel as the drawer where I thought it was had the Laughing Cow container of coins dad selected specially for me. Each of my siblings got one as well. It had my initial in his distinctive handwriting and it was clearly for me as it contained a gold coin embossed with my zodiac animal.
Sorry to hear about your fall, hope the arnica works well for you. I gave some yesterday to my husband who hurt his back, he felt better this am. And how cool that you found a coworker who loves perfume!
Love the story about the coins selected by your dad. What a sweet memento. I save letters from my parents, it’s nice to see their handwriting and think of them writing to me.
I missed it yesterday, but I’m sorry to hear about your fall. I hope there is no unpleasant surprises as the time goes.
From time to time in our office building (well, let’s be more specific – in the restroom) I meet women who wear perfumes that 1) make me feel happy that I do not work with them; 2) keep me wondering how those abominations got created and sold and 3) make me self-conscious about perfumes I wear to the office.
I missed your post. Hope you are feeling much better today and that this crazy, problematic winter goes away very soon!
Sorry to hear about your fall – I hope your right side and elbow are better very soon!
So, did you find out what the smell was? Sounds like you work in a really big office. Usually when I smell awful perfume cologne in the wild it is from a man overdoing it trying to smell sexy
Love your photo realistic description 🙂 when I smell Heure Exquise I hear
http://youtu.be/CSPacDUm5dk
It is always good to find a co-worker who likes/loves perfume!
One of my co-workers wears Coco as a signature and I love it. But yeah, when someone wears something ugly it can ruin the mood.
I hope your elbow returns back to its normal state very soon, and I love the coin-story, that is so sweet!
