Tuesday scent of the day 3/6

Posted by Robin on 6 March 2018 255 Comments

Hey, it's Tuesday, plus Day of the Dude. What fragrance are you wearing?

As we wait for the arrival of another Nor'easter, I'm doing a quick beach holiday in 4160Tuesdays What I Did On My Holidays.

Reminder: on 3/9, we're doing Is it real, or is it Memorex?... wear a fragrance that photorealistically duplicates the smell of something else. Suggested by Jalapeno.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Tap 1 cup teapot is £34.99 at Ceramic Inspirations.

    Robin,
I just received that 4160 scent in a recent swap packet – I can’t wait to try it.
Wearing Amouage Bracken Woman. It takes me to a damp, fern strewn clearing that is filled with (non-bitey) insects and lots of shade from nearby oaks.

Glad your insects aren’t biting ;-)

Thanks for all the great BUB or back up bottle advice yesterday…I really appreciate it. Will confess if I do pull the trigger… :)

This whole concept of a budget has really made me pause and think about perfume purchases both great and small…the small ones add up it turns out… ;)

The small ones really add up over the years. There are probably as many fragrances I wish I hadn’t bought as fragrances I regret not getting when I could. Regret is part of this hobby!

I’m going to have to check out the AM show. I have become a real fan of Sarah Burton (even some of the skulls which originally were very offputting) and overall I like the vibe of the line. It somehow feels authentic to me, which I don’t get from many designers. I also really like the McQueen fragrance that came out in the past year – the extrait especially. It’s not revolutionary as far as BWFs go but it ticks the boxes.

If you’ve ever been in an ice-cream parlour when they’re making waffle cones, you know that gorgeous smell of toasted wheat, caramelized sugar, and vanilla, which is exactly, precisely what Demeter Waffle Cone smells like. It’s uncannily accurate. And so appealing

That’s interesting that yiu say that. I have, and wear, all 3 if those frags. The blackberry / blackcurrant openings do have some resemblance – particularly between b & b and in love again but for me that’s where thr resemblance ends. B & B is herbal and pretty linear, ILA is a juicy slightly sweet fruity rose with a dusting of dried tose petals, and L’OdL is a walk through a damp resinous forest.

Alwsys interests me how everyone’s experience of fragrances is so different.

It’s been many years since smelling ILA, and I got a lot of what I thought was pine. I really liked it, but couldn’t wear it. I should try again.

My comment eas about L”Ombre Dans L’Eau…I really need another coffee!

I’ve never had pine out of In Love Again…I wonder what was reading like that for you? Our noses are weird sometimes. (Or maybe that’s just me lol)

    • odonata9 says:

I have Blackberry & Bay and Falling in Love. Falling in Love is very sweet, while B&B is tart. Love them both. Not sure how it compares to In Love Again, but if you’re looking for sweet, Falling in Love is the way to go – just wore it the other day!

Day of the Dude! We have a magnet on our fridge I got at the farmer’s market that reads: That’s just like your opinion man. Lol. So many great lines.

SotD is Hiris! I’m finally getting to sample this much mentioned fragrance thanks to CobraRose and the freebiemeet. I did a preliminary sample last night on the back of my hand ( thank you to whoever said they sample this way, I do it all the time now! I think it was kpaint?????) of this and Heure Exquise. I had madtownteen do a sniff test. The AG got a shrug and Hiris got a “Oooh!” Luca Turin may think it’s a sad little iris, but I’m finding it quite lovely.

Speaking of freebiemeet, I have a little box of about 20 samples I’ve made my way through in the past few weeks that I’d like to send on to a new home. I won’t list them all but included is: Amouage Fate Woman, some By Kilians, some Byredos, some classic Guerlains and a few Uncle Serge. If you are in the US, shoot me an email at pkwisdom in the land of yahoo and I will send them your way!

I am wearing Eau des Merveilles (edt) today.

I still need to see my new nephew. I am busy working on the birthday anouncement card though. I made them for all my nephews and niece (yes only 1 niece so far). Its fun (i draw them by hand, oldskool) but after half a dozen its becoming a bit boring to be honest.

Oh and you guys lemming’ed me into more Amouage last weekend, so I tried some more, I really liked for Jubilation.

So I ordered the 12 piece Amouage sample set (Women). Its not a cheap set (I could buy a full bottle of Eau des Merveilles for that price) but I found a nice deal (30 percent off).

Please share all thoughts on Amouage! I think I know that sample set you got which I have so far managed to resist. Are they the dab vials? If so that was what kept me away so far (though perhaps not with 30% off).

And a new baby is always yay-worthy! It sounds like your brothers and sisters stay busy. :-) Oldskool is awesome. I bet those announcements you draw will be treasured forever.

They are glass spray vials with a cap.

I dont know where you live but the shop where I found them is Dutch and they only ship to a handful of European countries. But I bet there are more sites that offer them discounted (maybe Notino?)!

Hi all! Im inUn Air de Samsara. Have y’all tried this one? I was surprised how much I like it. The sandalwood and jasmine are completely intact but the whole this is lightened. I get a whiff of tea in the top notes, followed by a bloom or two of narcissus. I got some dry spices yesterday, but only up close. This one is gorgeous! If Samsara is too much for you, I’d recommend giving this one a try.

Thank you all for your good wishes yesterday to my dog Yei. He has a big inflammation in his “backside” glands. He is under medication until Thursday, but if he does not show any improvement by then, he has to be back on Friday for a sonogram, blood tests, etc. He is under the weather and I am just hoping and praying that he does not need them. He always gets terrified with those procedures.

SODT L’Air Du Desert Marocain to give me strength and energy to face the day and to start preparing mentally for another tough commute tomorrow thanks to another “lovely” Nor’easter :( SPRING, WHERE ARE YOU????? :D

Wearing two coffee scents: Legendary Fragrances Barista and Lush Cardamom Coffee. At some stage, they both do smell like a cup of coffee: black with spices (CC) and cappuccino (Barista). Although they smell less like coffee later.

Moonlight Patchouli today! I get a lot more iris and leather than patchouli, but it’s not a photorealistic version of any of those. It’s quite nice.

I unboxed all of my perfume bottles last night! They’re in a pretty dark corner so they should be ok. More importantly, I’ll wear them more if they’re already unboxed, and besides, they look so pretty now :)

I asked this on yesterday’s thread by mistake, can someone help me out?
I have a general question about love it or hate it scents: is it due to skin chemistry or just different noses that people pick up the awful notes? Even if something smells pleasant to me I don’t want to subject people near me to vomity smells if that’s what it’s like for them.

It can be either/both. If you’re not sure about a scent on you, just ask friends whether it smells good on you.

Nahhhh haven’t you ever put the same perfume on yourself and a friend? The same scent can smell completely different to your nose at the same time on two different skins.

I agree with SFguy about nose>skin, but I think maybe at times we do smell different things because of changes in hormones, diet etc. at least I feel I do, when I eat a lot of junk food versus eating more healthful food, etc.

that said – other than secretions magnifique level fragrance and truly overdoing a powerhouse, I don’t think anything is truly repulsive to people – they are smelling the dry down, and with context, if you smell a person that smells of perfume your nose/brain is going to tell you that that is something that generally “smells good”

I was at the grocery store and was talking to the pharmacist – there was a very elderly gentleman behind me and there was a pungent smell – so the context was “medical, elderly, strong odor” and we both thought we smelled urine. Then, we simultaneously saw the chocolate fountain display, and the scent instantly changed to artificial chocolate – not absolutely delicious but pleasant and non-offensive. Weird!

Thirding the nose and people’s perception of the scent. Also I’ve liked some perfume better on others than on myself with the differemce being that I’m not picking up certain notes from a distance. Things smell different when you’re sniffing your own wrist sometimes.

I know from testing the same fragrance on different people at the same time that skin (and probably what people may have on their skin) does change the character of a scent. But I think when a scent that smells good to some people smells terrible to others, it’s more likely to be due to anosmia and/or hyperosmia to one or more of the notes.

Sometimes there are random scent associations, too. I dislike cigarette smoke intensely because my parents smoked in the car on long trips in which I got motion sickness. In addition, I can’t bear the flavor (aroma) of Inka Cola because the same flavoring was used in the syrup form of a medication for motion sickness I was given as a child. I’m not sure if that’s due to the underlying bad taste of the medicine, or the context of motion sickness.

Thanks for the advice! I’m always afraid to wear these polarizing scents, I don’t want people wondering why I smell like pee when I think I smell great. Glad to hear it doesn’t generally project too far.

I think the key is to apply judiciously in order to keep one’s perfume in one’s personal space while in public. I don’t care how wonderful a perfume is, I don’t want to smell it in my cubicle all day and have it become associated for all time with work stress.

I don’t mind ciggerette or tabbaco in a perfume, but can not stand burning wood or fireplace smells. Probably due to being in a house fire as a child. I’ve learned to like a lot of different smells over time, but not the ones with bad associations.

From my experience, I’d say it’s a combination of both skin chemistry and noses. I remember when a good friend and I both tried TF Violet Blonde at the same time on skin… we ended up smelling completely different! Both scents were pleasant, but did not at all smell like the same perfume.

Try it, I never would have thought I could wear a white floral but this has enough greens that it’s very nicely balanced, not too sweet or sharp smelling.
I’ve worn it on and off for years, one of my favorite LOTV perfumes and it’s super cheap!

    2) Because of the weather, I am wearing Aromatic Elixir- a quick broad spritz.

Who doesn’t want to celebrate Day of the Dude?!

Just getting going up here in the PNW. Yesterday was outstandingly gorgeous! We were at the beach all afternoon, did a bit of hiking and exploring, and a lot of Chuck it ball for T-Rex.

The sea lions were out in force too, enjoying the rare clear sunny day. The surf was really high and as the sun started to go down, the swells were backlit, appearing almost phosphorescent green. I’d occasionally see the silhouette of a sea lion suspended in the wave as it crested. They slipped through the rough surf like silk, elegant and graceful, the white foaming cauldron swirling all around them. Unflappable, they tooled around deadly rock formations and waves crashing 50-60’ into the air. I’d like to maneuver through life like those sea lions maneuver through the ocean.

No SOTD yet, but I’m getting hooked on that Hinoki Vanilla. Generous sprays are the key. Thanks for all the birthday wishes yesterday. I’m not sad about the fact that senior citizens discounts are just a couple of years away????

I’m wearing the last of my unknown pleasures sample, which doesn’t smell like seeing Joy Division in a dank basement at all, but incongruously like lemon cream and waffle cone.

OH, that’s not Joy Division at all!
What fragrance would evoke Joy Division, I wonder, Coco EDP, Coromandel or perhaps CdG’s Avignon?

something with smoke and damp incense and sweat, maybe l’air de rien? I only have petit rien, but I get the general idea. Also totally agree about avignon

To me, leather fragrances are the ultimate Memorex scents. The smell of leather scent, from photo-real to fantastic, is created out of other notes entirely.

Akil, the wonderful Chanel rep at the Chevy Chase Saks Fifth Avenue, has a guide to the main notes in each Chanel perfume and an Olfactorium containing tiny jars of 40 basic Chanel ingredients, from aldehydes to ylang ylang. One time, we dipped scent strips into each of the main notes of Cuir de Russie: birch tar, ylang ylang, jasmine (exotic, as opposed to Grasse), and cistus labdanum. We held fanned out, as perfumers do, et voila! Cuir de Russie materialized, as if by magic.

(I had always understood that Cuir de Russie had a lot of orris, too, but that doesn’t seem to be an essential part of the leather accord.)

      Wow – this is fascinating!

Can you explain for me the difference between ‘exotic’ as opposed to the Grasse jasmine? By exotic, meaning from some place like India? Different strains entirely I assume, but I’m curious in what ways they smell different or what else you can say about character/type/whatever. This is something I need to know!!! :-D

I wasnt askes, but my guess
The jasmine from Grasse must be the jasminum grandiflorum. Those tiny flowers smell almost fruity and high pitched (if that makes sense).

The exotic one could be the Sambac variety (aka Arabian jasmine, they originate from Himalayas if I remember correctly). They often use Sambac in jasmine tea, and it smells greener/lower pitched (also more animalic) to me than the grandiflorum.

I saw and smelled the jasmine grandiflorum in the gardens of the museum of perfumery, when I was in Grasse last year. That almost felt like a perfumista milestone haha though it was not fully in bloom yet.

There was another ‘jasmine’ there though that you could spot and smell in everywhere, on every streetcorner. The star or confederate jasmine (from another plantfamily actually, but quite similar in looks and smell to jasmine family..still get it?).

I’m sorry, I don’t remember. I did sniff both jasmines, and they really did smell quite different.

This 2014 photo of an Olfactorium shows Jasmine Abs Grasse and Jasmine Abs Corse (abs is short for absolute), but I’m certain the 2017 Olfactorium had Jasmine Exotic.

        https://www.masculin.com/images/article/9453/olfactorium-chanel.JPG

By the way, did you know that Eden Botanicals (no affiliation) offers a jasmine sampler pack?

        https://www.edenbotanicals.com/jasmine-sampler-pack.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&adpos=1o1&scid=scplpSP-JASMINE&sc_intid=SP-JASMINE&gclid=EAIaIQobChMItevLhb_Y2QIVxYqzCh1laQYuEAQYASABEgIDI_D_BwE

One of my peak perfume experiences, Jiji! I think that was my fourth visit, and I learn something new every time. It’s definitely worth checking to see if there is a Chanel Espace Parfums near you. In the DC area, it’s not part of one of the Chanel boutiques selling shoes, etc., but rather attached to the Chanel cosmetics section in a luxury department store. They debuted in Europe, but I’ve never found a list.

I’m trying St Clair Scents Frost on one side and comparing to SSS Winter Woods on the other. The SSS is more ambery, and I totally agree with Jessica’s review that the St Clair has a New England sensibility to it – it’s a little “spare”. To my nose, the opening was brighter (citrus) and the dry down has more smokiness. I prefer the ambery Winter Woods but am impressed with the St Clair Scents.

    SOTD = Chanel No.19 EDP

What a day! And it gets repeated again tomorrow. I will be working from home as I have a very long meeting ahead of me tonight and my first meeting tomorrow is at 7:30 in the morning.

Today, someone to whom I responded to to hold off on asking for yet another update responded with an inappropriate snide remark that I went straight to her boss’ boss’ and asked him to deal with it. Seriously? I am already working with her manager’s peers and management and her lack of courtesy was really off- putting.

To CM8 – stay safe! It looks like you’re getting more than twice what we’re getting in these here parts.
