Thursday scent of the day 3/1

Posted by Robin on 1 March 2018 291 Comments

Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit, and welcome to March! Plus, happy Holi, and watch out for the Worm Moon tonight. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Serge Lutens Santal Blanc.

Reminder: 3/2 will be Uncle Serge Day...wear something by Serge Lutens (a repeat from 2014).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Dapper Animal Salad Plate ("Our Dapper Animal Plates are based on paintings of real animals, which designer Rachel Kozlowski then dressed and accessorized to give characters all their own. Mix and match to create your own circle of animal friends.") is $10 at West Elm.

Oooh, I love this one. Thx for the reminder. Already wearing UBV, but maybe I will put on a bit of Un Lys tomorrow. All of my SL are samples or decants—I have no full bottles of Serge.

SL Chypre Rouge, the first Lutens I ever bought: I was in New York and had Chypre Rouge in one hand and Un Bois Vanille in the other, and I HAD TO CHOOSE. I picked weird and baffling over soft and comforting, and it was the right choice. (I did end up buying UBV eventually, of course.)

I’m a big fan of Chypre Rouge – it’s in my SL #2 spot, right after Douce Amere.

You smell weird, baffling, and great!

I remembered Rabbit x3..woke up at 12:04 am, said it, and went back to sleep :)

S(s)OTD- St Clair Scents Frost (named after the poet)
    SSS Winter Woods

Frost starts off with a blast of sweet woody smoky fire (I’m thinking this has nagarmotha, cade, birch tar, labdanum?)…the smoke diffuses a bit and a jammy leathery rose with nectar comes through…the smoky fireplace woody vibe weaves in and out but that sweetness remains…drydown to Marzipan’s wonky nose is strawberry jam and honeysuckle nectar. This would be a spectacular cold weather fragrance.

Winter Woods has always read very sweet on my skin…so for me it starts off with that dark vanilla, labdanum and amber vibe…then the smoke picks up (this is where it most resembles Frost) and the dry down on my sweet amplifying skin is burnt vanilla sugar.

They are similar enough for me that I feel that Frost could indeed replace my beloved Winter Woods.

and Yes, I am in trouble ’cause I want this one also in full size bottle…now if St Clair had an autumn scent I would have a complete seasonal wardrobe- Gardner’s Glove for Spring, First Cut for Summer and Frost for Winter.

        I know I was thinking that :)
Y’all already know that I have been “exploring” minimizing my number of possessions (have done so successfully with my wardrobe)…..wonder if I could do the same with my perfumes? It was Portia’s post on Australian Perfume Junkies not that long ago where the question was posed as to what is your ideal number of full bottles…for many many years mine was around 7…..do you think it is possible to get that number down to 4? one for each season? and then just play around with samples when there is a need to venture out?

I saw that post! This is something I have thought about…a lot…maybe too much, lol. I think it is possible for some people. I don’t have a “goal” per se as a perfumista, but I know I don’t want to have more perfume than I would use in my lifetime, that just would not suit my personality type (and I’m not in that tax bracket anyway so the problem kind of solves itself) and I still like the idea of a signature scent. My original FDTRH (fall down the rabbit hole, thank you Coin-op) was a quest for a new signature scent. I don’t think I’m ready to limit myself to one, but a handful…or two????, that I love would be ideal.

        • lillyjo says:
          1 March 2018 at 3:27 pm

For a long time, I kept it under ten, and none really related to season. For me it’s more about falling in love, or lust, and I’m constantly searching. My signature scents have pretty much remained comstant. Alien, Coco, Rush. I would like to get rid of more that I don’t love though.

    SL Arabie

Does anyone here read The New Yorker, I finished The White Darkness last night, which was about 26 pages, and its the first NYer article that I cried at the end. Anyways, during Henry Worsley trip across the Antartica his wife gave him a sample of Journey Man by Amouage as a small gift..thought the NST community would appreciate that!

I remembered to say rabbit this morning…

There are sections I skip entirely, but I read in order. My son skips ahead to look at comics and then wants to show them to me, and it makes me crazy. Your way is probably more fun.

Totally forgot about Rabbit this morning…But if last night’s moon was any indication, tonight’s will be spectacular!

Wearing ELDO Fils de Dieu today, also from the splitmeet, and it is MUCH more suited to my skin. That initial bit of lime-y goodness is heaven, and the subsequent coconut and jasmine is great. It does go quite powdery on me after a while (my skin really amplifies powder), which is not fully awesome, but is not awful either.

Hope everyone has a happy scent day!

My skin must amplify vanilla because that and the caramel pretty much drowned out the other notes. Or, since I’m not drawn to vanilla, I just notice it’s presence more.
Hope VH replenishes your vanilla levels today!

It is a like but not a love.

To my nose it has a hefty dose of citrus and lavender. Lavender and I are not always friends. I would classify it as a fougere vs. an oriental which I think Fragrantica calls it.

Maybe you’re just not in the mood for that specific scent at this specific time. Happens to all of us, I would imagine. (The dreadful alternative is that you simply don’t like it any more, which is rare but not unheard of: one day I discovered that my adored MPG Ambre Précieux, the first niche scent I ever bought, was something I never, ever wanted on my skin again. It’s probably not that, though.)

Santal Majuscule was a big hit yesterday, but Vitriol d’Oeillet and Muscs Koublai Khan were just “eh,” largely because of how quickly they disappeared from my skin. SOTD Rahat Loukoum, which is also fading fast, and presents just a touch of a musty cardboard vibe behind its sweet almond. Oh well, money saved.

I’ve not worn a lot of the heavier SLs but the lighter fare and florals are all incredibly short-lived on me.

MKK and RL have absolutely been reformulated, much to their detriment. Their lasting power is gone, along with their interesting, Lutensesque qualities.

That’s one I’ve been curious about and assumed the “bitters” reference meant the beverage/cocktail additive? Or is it more of an orange blossom thing?

I think it refers to the additive, as you said. It opens with a woodsy/bitter orange note, and settles into a comfortable ambery warmth with some sandalwood and orange. There’s nothing floral about it.

Happy March! Fragrance free so far as I’m doing some testing at lunch. Trying to decide between buying Diptyque Eau de Sens and the new(ish) L’Artisan Historie d’Orangers. I will spray one on each wrist and see which makes me smile more. Has anyone tried both? Thoughts?

The L’Artisan is my favorite of the two. The Diptyque is more bright and almost astringent (juicy?), while the L’A is a little softer. It reminds me of Hermes Neroli Dore in texture, but a little closer to the skin. Starts off green and then gradually softens. I wouldn’t turn down either, but I think I’ll stick to the soap version of Eau de Sens and buy the L’Artisan perfume.

I’m drowning in MFK BR 540 – made a mess of things with the decanting last night and used all available skin to soak up the spill. Only vague hints of it left but I’m going to enjoy it while it lasts so that at least I can feel like I salvaged some. I also ended up making an extra 20ml decant in case anyone is in the market for some lovely overpriced indulgence at the most affordable you can get it! :-) (seriously, if interested, please see contact riddle on the splitmeet)

I’ve been doing SL all week too with Fleurs D’Oranger; I think it was Portia at PP (?) who posted something about orange blossom in winter — though I may have totally misremembered that — anyway I pulled it out about two weeks ago and have been spraying liberally every afternoon since. It’s been my go-to when I want to really have some scent after a morning of dabbing and sampling.

Oh, and a confession is due. I made an impulse purchase last night. My uke lessons are in Williamsburg and I really need to put blinders on when I walk home. There’s a salon a few doors down that has a beauty section in the front with candles and perfumes. Got to test some Joya oils. Ended up buying a perfume oil from a botanical indie brand LVNEA. It’s called Nuit Desert and has notes of blood cedar, agarwood, jasmine. It’s woody, a bit smoky, with a beautiful rich natural jasmine swirling in the mix. And it was 50% off ???? So there’s my excuse(I think they’re not going to carry the line anymore. It’s based in Montreal and I’ve smelled some of her others and I think they’re well done naturals).

I have quite a few and really have grown to love them. They’re generally lower sillage which I prefer especially for work, they are generally smaller quantities than regular perfume, portable, and usually more affordable (like with Le Labo for example).

Instead, the first thing I heard at 530 am was ” what happened to the lights!”. Very loud scream. Jumped out of bed to find we had no power. Not sure why, seemed to be just half of my street. Fortunately it only lasted about 3 hours. It will be snowing soon with falling temps. Anyway, back in Mugler today with Aura. I’m so glad I do not get any menthol from it. I like the opening a lot.

For the first time ever, remembered to say rabbit, rabbit, rabbit. Had to go with Cuir Mauresque today, because it’s so cold and wet today, and I need something to warm me up.

Tomorrow I bring in my dog to have his tumor removed. I am very nervous. They will keep him overnight, but when he comes home he will have an open wound that I will be responsible for keeping clean and medicated, and I will have to keep an e-collar on him for about 6 weeks while his leg heals. He’s had an e-collar on before, for about a week, and he hated it (as most dogs do) and did a ton of damage knocking things over. I’m going to have to dog proof the home for his recovery period. On the other hand, I am extremely grateful that they will be able to spare his leg.

We’ve gone through lots of procedures like this and the good/bad part is that they come home really doped up (that’s bad because my dogs tend to hate being drugged like that, but it’s obviously good since mostly they will sleep!). My biggest issues have often been just getting the dog into the house – hopefully you have help with that part, assuming he’s a bigger guy? Six weeks in an ecollar is awful. I admit to not being so diligent about using those – depending on the dog of course, and if I’m around nonstop to monitor. Good luck with everything! I think the worst part is not having them home when they’re actually in for the surgery. Best wishes that it all goes well for you both.

I applied the beautiful but fleeting DSH Cafe Noir this AM. So fleeting that sadly I can no longer smell it. I am decanting Violette Sacree into a glass to create splits (the sprayer is intent on sending the juice everywhere BUT the vials–the angels are greedy even with this method) and my home office smells like violets and rain on this wet, grey day.

I agree that Cafe Noir is very fleeting. A shame because it is a great coffee scent. I think I will transfer the juice of my mini into a small decant and see if by spraying on it instead of dabbing it makes at least a slight difference.

My husband bought me some tiny funnels with a very narrow stem but deep and wide cone. I used them to do my decants this time around and it worked beautifully with very little product loss. Another upside: in the past, I’ve ended up with perfume dripping down my arms and overdosing on whatever I was decanting, not wanting to wear said perfume ever again ;(

He got them at a local Japanese import shop, but if you happen to see something like that, it’s worth a try. I’ve had some decanting disasters and feel like I’m finally becoming more of a pro after lots of trial and error ;)

I took a break this morning from Uncle Serge due to a dentist appointment. Went instead with Caron Pour un Homme for the benefit of some relaxing lavender. My dentist has done her best to make her office almost spa like and all of the staff are super friendly. Once when I was chilly, they brought me a heated blanket. But still. It IS the dentist after all. I think I still have some ptsd from last fall’s filling and then subsequent root canal. Today’s visit was two thumbs up though. ???? Okay, I’m done whining now.

On a happier note, the wintery mix we were supposed to get completely missed us! Ha! Our streets are dry as a bone. It went south of us and I think it’s headed toward Lillyjo.

Oh man, I just looked and fragrancenet is practically giving this stuff away!

My routine at the dentist is to get a blanket, headphones and the remote right off the bat. Then I chill and watch TV while they’re grinding and scraping. I can block out most of what’s going on even though it’s still fairly unpleasant. I used to get major dentist anxiety and blocking out the noise really helps. I also ask them to adjust my seat when I don’t need to be tipped back as that position makes me feel upside-down and dizzy. If only they could reduce the cost, then my dentist-related financial anxiety would abate as well… Oh, and stop using dental dams. Torture devices! Glad your appointment went well, though!

So glad T-Rex is almost 100%!
I’ve gotten into the habit of spraying some of my big scents on my stomach too. I’m sure it’s a tip I read about on nst.
And just for the record, nurses are not losers, they are rock stars!????

I am glad that T-Rex is better….it’s so hard when our babies suffer.

I have to tell you that Sam Adams has a limited edition Orange Blossom beer and it is fragrant and delicious…..you deserve one after the difficult days you have been through.

And I second madtowngirl in her sentiment that nurses rock….there will be two in my family soon enough :)

Enjoying Bois et Fruits. My favorite of the Bois line are Bois Oriental and Bois de Violette, but this runs a close third. Perhaps I will spring for a bell jar one day.

I have no idea what to wear this morning but I just spilled coffee all over my shirt (long night, no sleep, apparently someone moved the usual location of my mouth) so thinking maybe some Avignon to shoo away the nasty little demon tailing me since yesterday. That’ll go with coffee-stain, right? Ugh, is it March already…

I’ve noticed that I find it hard to settle on a perfume now that the mornings are so dark and I can’t see what the weather is like…even though I have been outside and know it is overcast and calm and not too cold. So , this is one of life’s mysteries …why I need to see the day in order to perfume it. Similarly, i often find myself turning up the volume on foreign films even though I can’t understand the volume. Why is that? So…Bapteme du Feu for a pitch dark, silent morning .

Daylight in the morning does something good for the brain. In winter I sometimes choose perfume at night for the next day, especially if I’m setting out my work clothes for the next morning. Though overnight I often change my mind about the perfume choice.

I watched Jiro Dreams of Sushi repeatedly for the beautiful visuals and music. I had the sound turned up loud and started to think I could understand some of the Japanese words. Probably not, though. :)

Exactly. Sometimes (with films, television in English) I find I it hard to listen and watch at the same time…so I use subtitles because I can read and watch more easily. Odd. I love how sight and sound work…and also why I close my eyes to sniff (sometimes). And I just cannot read or write whilst listening to music. And yet if someone is speaking to me I often find myself staring at them, like I’m searching out the words….maybe I am just under-developed.

Yesterday I posted a link to 19th century photos of traditional Russian costumes, and Jiji wondered what they would look like in color. Apparently these costumes still exist in museums and private collections, and there are many photos on Pinterest, such as those in the following search:

    https://www.pinterest.com/pin/386042999284640786

(I apologize in advance if the link doesn’t work. I don’t have an account on Pinterest and don’t know how to work with it. They are fairly easy to find via Google image searches. I ended up searching specifically for Russian State Museum costumes to get more of the historic ones.)

I havent looked at spring shoes/clothing that much yet, its still freezing ❄️ here and I find it hard to imagine spring weather and spring clothing.
I also try to buy most of my clothing in Sale.

My shoe collection is not very exciting actually, mostly black suede (black suede pumps, black suede loafers, black suede overknee boots and yeah those black suede bow booties are the latest addition haha).

But for spring I could use some white or grey leather sneakers!

I have a tiny bit of this original somewhere too, along with a FB of the SL version. To me, the SL version is so similar to Bois et Fruits that I probably should pare one of them from the collection. I too have the Shiseido version hidden away (I think it’s with my Nombre Noir which I keep only for the sake of having it, which is a pretty flimsy reason now that I’ve said it out loud).

    ????????????

I put on some of Aliage this morning because I need to go to the gym and thought “the first sports fragrance” might motivate me… It hasn’t yet

The oakmoss is so strong it almost smells insence-y to me – so the sports scent has a bit of a church vibe to me

Since then I’ve decanted some corn or flour, Carnal Flower, thank you – so clearly I smell like that now. I’m pretty stuffed up – but I can smell it – it’s potent and smooth and tropical without smelling like a mixed drink or suntan lotion – I love it!

(I also like mixed drinks and suntan lotion – but I like mixing it up)

its at most Estee Lauder counters, but you might have to ask for it – since it’s a weirdo 70’s scent :)

I’m testing Tom Ford London, and I haven’t made up my mind about it yet. There are segments that I like very much. I finally realized that one of the things that bothered me was something my nose interprets as a caraway note. Also maybe ends up too sweet. But London kind of intriguing and doesn’t annoy me in the usual ways that Tom Fords do. We’ll see how it goes today.

BTW, I passed by a woman whose sillage smelled great recently and asked what she was wearing. It was TF Santal Blush. The buttery note would annoy the heck out of me if I wore it, but the perfume worked really well on her in passing. Nose-catching! Which I tend to forget as one of the major functions of perfume, LOL.

SOTD is SL Nuit de Cellophane. Nice osmanthus for a pretty spring day here in Houston.

I so wanted to love this one, but it went soapy on me fairly quickly. Most SL forals are wonderful on my skin but this one didn’t cooperate. I bet you have smelled gorgeous today though!

I need to paw through samples for tomorrow…I’m sure there’s a Lutens in there somewhere.

Today is Pamplemousse Rose, simply because my husband has a wee dram left in a big bottle, and I want to free up the space in the cabinet. And also…it’s fresh and clean. Win win.

I love Pamplemousse Rose but it is so fleeting I couldn’t justify a bottle. On the plus side, though, if you top up regularly through the day you can use it up faster and free up that spot ;)

Locating my stash of SL samples last night was a bit of a challenge, but I eventually found them. Whew! I’m all ready for tomorrow…

Yes, D-backs. Alas, “Just Dingers” (????) accepted a 5-year $110m deal from the Red Sox.???? (I admit I’ve rather lost track, too. So, I’m guessing you might be a Tigers fan, then?)

I’m in samples of Nicolai stuff on top of samples of Nicolai stuff – a lovely NST’er is patiently waiting for me to make up my mind whether I will buy the Eau Fraiche set so she can take the eau d’ete (eau chic could also be taken is someone wanted that…) or not and I need to decide! The weather is just totally wrong for trying hot weather type fragrances – stormy and raining. So I’ve just put on some Sacrebleu. It’s lovely. Hoping to read more reviews about Cap Neroli – I saw one on Cafleurebon, but since the reviewer pretty much loves all the Nicolai fragrances I’m not sure what to make of them.
I’m also not a fan of the tiny font and all those pictures (though I’m sure others may really love that aspect of the blog)- not as reader friendly as NST, for sure!

Finally making time to comment this week! Being busy at work has made it hard for me, but today things have calmed down some. I finished out iris month on Tues and Wed with Le Cri de la Lumiere and L’Attesa. Le Cri is lovely, classy and easy to wear. I think it could be mistaken for a Chanel. And L’Attesa is one of my favorite iris perfumes.

Today I’m wearing SL L’eau Froide, my most recent full bottle purchase. I will caution everyone about buying SL testers – they are highly likely to leak in transit since the testers come with the sprayers already attached. FragranceNet at least put the perfume bottle in a plastic baggie inside the tester box so it didn’t make a mess everywhere. But I still wish I’d paid a little more for the regular bottle

Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit! ???? ???? ???? I think I might have said this twice at oh dark early this morning, so if someone forgot the rabbits, I summoned them for you. That’s what can happen when one is in a semi-conscious haze.

Back to clouds today, and waiting for the rain. Not sure if I will see any snow or if it will be wintry mix… forecast seems to be evolving throughout the day. It all still sounds like “Yick” to me.

SOTD = SL Al A Nuit. Not much left in this sample, so I’ve been enjoying it. Maybe when it’s finished I’ll get a decant of it.

A la Nuit is so fleeting on me. I wish it could last longer, because I really like it, but once my large decant is gone I will not replace it.
Stay warm and dry tomorrow. It looks like my commuting is going to be tough????

I said it last night when I caught a glimpse of my calendar as I was going to bed—which probably doesn’t count. Poor rabbits, I’m just too much of a zombie when I wake up to ever remember them! ☺️

I need spine strengthening for the whole month of March as it will be one crazy ride.

The answer to the Survey question Episode one – what is Buffalo Meatloaf ? I thoght it was meatloaf made with ground buffalo meat but it was actually regular neatloaf with buffalo sauce.. needless to say, due to perceived spiciness, I refused a free sluce.

I got an enail from eBates telling me that I am getting 20% cash back from my putchases. Woo hoo!

I’ve eaten buffalo (aka bison) burgers fairly often and found them to be rather tasty, so meatloaf made with that wouldn’t phase me at all. The buffalo sauce is a whole ‘nother thing, though… Nope!

Good luck for the rest of March! ???? ☘

Butting in to say “YES!!!” One uncle of mine had a beefalo, which is a cow-bison hybrid. You couldn’t even walk near that thing’s pen without it charging at you! And it was only half bison. Imagine what a full-blooded one would be like.

Well, they’re wild animals. If you annoy them, they’re gonna skewer you. Google Yellowstone bison plus dumb people and then watch. They’re not “mean.” They’re just wild animals that don’t like being harassed.
