Wednesday scent of the day 2/14

Posted by Robin on 14 February 2018 433 Comments

Happy Valentine’s Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I went with a little dab of Box of Eels.

Reminder: on 2/16 we're celebrating the Lunar New Year...wear an auspicious fragrance to ring in the Year of the (Earth) Dog.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Candy Heart Cake Bites (for dogs!) are $36 for a case of 12 at Bubba Rose Biscuit Company.

SSS Rose Volupte- seems perfect for Valentine’s Day. Oh how I wish I had more than a few sprays left in my little bottle. Still, may as well enjoy it while I can.

Ah, maybe I will wear my SSS Vintage Rose later today. I will miss that one — and it was already discontinued anyway.

I’ll miss SSS though I think I have enough bottles and samples to last me for a while taking into the consideration how potent they are.

Wearing Lutens Chypre Rouge thanks to a generous fragrance friend.
Ollie didn’t care for today’s choice, so I will pick something more to his liking for our evening of pizza and puppy-cuddles.

My Mom was buried on V Day, 2010 , so while I was never a real fan, I positively shun it since then.
May all who have more adventurous evenings plans enjoy them!!

That is an interesting day that your Mom was buried on. Perhaps you can use this day to spread the love for your Mom and for all mothers out there, or anyone whom has lost a mother. Big Love <3

I think these anniversaries of when they left us are often harder than their birthdays, and I can only imagine the complicated emotions imbued in today for you now. Eight years is not long – but pizza and puppies can make anything better. :-)

I love Journey Woman on everyone but me. My skin amps up the mimosa, a note that just doesn’t work on me, but on everyone else, it always smells like such a delightful osmanthus-apricot and honey fragrance. Great pick for Valentine’s Day :-) . Lipstick Queen’s reds rock!

I wear Maybelline Superstay 24 b/c I hate reapplying during the day, but I found that a swipe of Lipstick Queen’s Black Lace Rabbit tones any of their shades down to something that’s a little more reserved and flattering on me. It’s my secret lipstick weapon.

My go-to’s are Unlimited Raisin (a nice grey-inflected mauve) and Constant Cocoa (a softer, neutral pinky-brown). Depending on the outfit, I’ll sometimes also do All Day Cherry (especially nice with the Black Lace Rabbit), Day to Night Brown, Constantly Cabernet, or So Sienna. I’ve tried other long-lasting lipsticks, but this one is literally still on my lips the next morning unless I remove it, and that earns my undying faithfulness.

          14 February 2018 at 11:17 am

I like her Sinner collection (90% pigment, so very saturated), especially in Red, Bordeaux, and Bright Natural (I have cooler undertones, if that matters). I don’t get much occasion to wear them, as makeup isn’t much of a thing out here in Colorado, but it’s fun to go all out with the vampy lips on the rare occasion that I do dress up. Medieval is a great shade, too…it looks good on all skintones.

I’m a fan of Medieval as well. It was my training wheel red, and outside of one MUFE red lip gloss, remains the only red in my ridiculously big lipstick collection. ????

Usually I get my SOTD ideas from NST’ers but today it’s lipstick. Thank you! Medieval is what my today’s outlook needs.

I’m a big fan of LQ. I like all of their “weirder” colors – Hello Sailor, Frog Prince, Black Lace Rabbit. From the more regular (and substantial) colors I like Goodbye from the Butterfly Ball collection.

I thought it was absolutely marvelous, with the lead, Sally Hawkins, being a pitch perfect combo of Greta Garbo and Charlie Chaplin. The supporting cast is just awesome, and the interlocking stories buoyed the romance at the center of the film. Nothing is wasted, nothing is ill considered.

I loved it, and I think honestly Del Toro needs the Oscar for this.

My husband’s birthday is 4 days before Valentine’s Day, so we don’t really do anything for V Day either. Usually my husband will get me a card or a bouquet of flowers from the grocery store or something–which is just fine with me. We don’t really do much as far as birthday gifts either. The only time we normally exchange gifts is Christmas. Mostly we just take a short trip or even just a day trip and go out to eat somewhere nice. For major birthdays, such as 40, 50, etc., we may plan a longer trip. I find we get more enjoyment out of experiences than things.

I’ve been saving my last few drops of L’A’s Voleur de Roses for a cloudy cool day and FINALLY one has arrived. Crossing my fingers that we get even more rain than predicted.

Happy Valentine’s Day! I’m totally stealing the idea in the pic and icing some little heart shaped cakes to look like candy hearts next year . . .

Voleur has a heavy patchouli note, so I don’t think it’s very similar to Stella (though I’ve only sniffed Stella once or twice). Maybe the same family as Portrait of a Lady?

Those puppy treats are very cute! I sort of wonder who buys such indulgences though. I have trouble paying that much for a treat for myself! Unless it’s perfume, I suppose.

Happy Valentines to anyone who enjoys it, and Happy Wednesday to those who do not!

Today I have a query: If you’ve tried Baccarat Rouge 540 in the Extrait version, how much of the almond do you perceive? Can you describe it for me?

(I’m wishing I was in BR 540 – instead, sticking with the irises, I pulled out Monlinard Violette.)

Since those treats are not something that anyone would feed their dogs on a regular basis, I think it’s rather a novelty item, an impulse buy on the idea, the overcommercialized part of the holiday that I like otherwise. And it’s organic! ;)

The Molinard is almost syrupy violet! It starts strong and builds stronger on me. I’m actually not getting any iris despite what the notes say. I’ve got AL’O on the other wrist and I’m surprised how dry it seems compared to Violette — I too had thought they were quite similar when I first tried the Violette solo. Maybe I can pass this sample along to you?

Vanilla Quest continues with some DSH offerings. Vanilla Bourbon is boozy-weird to start with, and Vanilla Chantilly is, I think, going to display too much of Dawn’s musk which tends to run sweetish on me.

Happy birthday to my favorite brother!

I blind-bought Nuit Noire and finally now I like it, but it was originally a regret. It’s definitely a ‘mood’ fragrance for me (as in, I need to be in the right one!). I got really excited by MdO from seeing some of the (always stunning) reviews by Gaia. I have a sample set that’s been neglected, which I intend to remedy soon! The vanilla was one that everyone seemed to rave over. It seems quite dry to me so if that’s what you’re currently questing after it might be worth investigating? It did not last terribly long though. I would offer to send you some but my sample is nearly gone now.

I *just* got a sample of MdO Vanille and it was super quiet when I tested it. Is that your experience, too? I tried it from a dabber, though. It might be totally different sprayed.

Have you tried any of La Maison de la Vanille‘s perfumes? They have about 6 or 7 different vanillas, and a couple of years ago when I checked, their full line sample set wasn’t expensive.

I love her Vanilla Bourbon Intense, as it’s boozy-rich but not really sweet. Vanilla Chantilly is definitely a sweeter vanilla. If you haven’t tried her Vanille Botanique, that one might be the right balance of rich, non-boozy, non-sweet vanilla.

As someone who views Valentines Day as part an international conspiracy against intentionally single people, I think this would be the perfect time to wear one’s favorite aggressively loud or weird perfume, such as a patchouli or tuberose bomb, a vintage 1980s favorite, Mitsouko, or a weird Duchaufour. ELDO Secretions Magnifiques would be ideal. I’m not that reckless, but this might be the day to test ELDO Une Amourette on skin.

    HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY Y’ALL!!!

    https://www.instagram.com/p/BfLnfqxhYc4/?taken-by=jadainga99

Went with total kitsch today….unabashed kitsch! Avon Ultra Sexy Heart is an inexpensive maraschino cherry, chocolate marshmallow, and rose scent. Total Valentine’s centered scent pick!

My kids made fun of my outfit and always make fun of my enthusiasm for Valentine’s, but I don’t care. I think today is a good excuse to let everyone know that you care about them and love ’em! That said, I LOVE my scented friends here on NST and look forward to checking in everyday! :)

You know, I haven’t bought anything else from Avon in YEARS! Absolutely no idea what’s new and good anymore….

I bought Ultra Sexy Heart on eBay a couple of years ago for 5 bucks! LOL!

Warning: Longevity on this one is zilch, and you’ll need to spray 5 or 6 times to smell it at all, but it’s a “cute” scent! :)

My 4 year old was so excited for Valentine’s Day today. Been asking about it since day after Xmas. ????

I’m in Lavanila Pure Vanilla and Vanilla Coconut today.

Jenni G’s review in yesterday’s thread for Coco Mademoiselle Intense has made me want to try it. And yes, by God, it has vanilla!

I like them both. They are very vanilla-y…up front and center. The Pure one has musk to my nose and patchouli shows up later. I may prefer the Coconut overall but I think that’s just in comparison when I compare on my forearms at the same time. I’ve realized that comparing two perfumes forces the nose to choose one over the other as preferred even though I might happily wear each alone as with these two. Kind of like chocolate and vanilla ice cream…I happily will eat both but if some said which is better I’d be forced to rank them. ;)

I NEED to try Insolence. Went to Saks a few months ago for this express purpose only to discover Guerlain had pulled their counter. Boo! And here I am being so virtuous and not buying samples… Oh well, I have plenty of other lovely things to smell. It’s not like I’m deprived. I’ll just have to be patient until Insolence decides to find me. I have faith it will happen.

Oh, do keep a look out for Insolence. I will admit (hangs head) that I got frustrated that I couldn’t find a tester of the EdT, so I bought a bottle (inexpensively) without testing first. Lucked out that it appeals to me. The iris and violet round out the raspberries and roses so nicely. It’s delicious, like a floral bubble gum. :D

Insolence lives up to it’s name, I guess. Or Guerlain does for making it tough to find tester bottles. ;)

Hope when Insolence shows up you will find you enjoy it. It is the only berries-fruity perfume (I can think of) that I like to wear!

I’m milking this winter thing for all it’s worth since we’ve actually been having one (by Houston standards anyway). It’s supposed to be warm the next couple of days, and I’m kind of annoyed when it gets really warm in February, to be honest. We get plenty of heat, thank you. I’ve been wearing Coromandel quite a bit lately. It’s sort of been my go-to this winter. Good think I have a decent sized decant.

    Happy greeting card holiday, all!
And for the lovers out there, happy Wednesday, too.

Today I’m half-clogged with a cold in retrograde, so I need something a touch strong, and I’m going with Tonnerre by Beaufort, from the UK. It’s spicy, strong, slightly camphoraceous/phenolic, and as typically the case with most fumes, I can’t tell whether I love it or hate it. But, a friend gave it to me and I persist. I think it’s the drydown I dislike, which I find a bit plain. Meh.

Maybe I should just go with Eau de Nyquil.

In Mohur again. I really love this fragrance. I know it doesn’t work for everyone, but golly it works for me. My house, well at least the living-room, is full of roses–self inflicted! Amazon and Whole Foods had a deal of 24 roses for $19.99. The clerk and I didn’t realize that each bouquet had 24 roses because 12 were shorter-stemmed and mixed in with 12 longer-stemmed roses. So I wound up with 48 hot pink roses that are bursting from three brightly colored vases… the effect looks like something vaguely Diego Rivera… very cheery this St. Valentine’s Day. My husband left at the crack of dawn and is working late–so we’re planning on celebrating V-D on Friday. In the meantime I am enjoying my happy roses.

Just really thanks to everyone who commented about my son yesterday. As I mentioned, the tests were routine (every 6 months) but I am really really hoping that his adrenal insufficiency has not gotten worse. He’s just been dxed with 23 degree scoliosis and has two massive orthopedic surgeries scheduled for March 12 and July 9 that will have him at home and in a wheelchair for a minimum of one month after each. Soooo…. no scary emergencies, but a lot of worry none-the less. (Some days I have that song “Money, Money” from Caberet stuck in my head, except I hear “Worry” as in “Worry makes the world go ’round, that clinking clanking sound. . .”!)

I’m very sorry to hear your son needs surgery, but glad that it sounds like, I hope, you guys have a good medical team in place.

My oldest daughter is developmentally delayed and has complex medical issues. It’s not easy. my friend sent me this cartoon yesterday – it’s a triptych of three Barbies – one without kids – one with kids – and the third is the special-needs mom – and the special-needs Mom of course has the darkest circles under her eyes and messiest hair, gave me a laugh yesterday.

Perfect description. They are truly Schiaparelli pink! And they actually smell like roses. When I took the photo I kept thinking it did not look like there were 48 roses… So, I just picked up my son from the train station… and he told me that he had grabbed several of the flowers on his way out this morning, which he gave away at school. I didn’t know whether to laugh or nod encouragingly!

The cats are cute! The big stripey one is pretty dumb, but in that “dopey skateboard guy in your dorm who is always ready to give you a hug if you need it” sort of way. The black one is super smart, talkative, opinionated, and funny as hell.

I’m in Coven today, as my desire to try a new thing overtook the desire to wear a Valentine’s Day thing!
This one starts out very earthy and…is there a bit of fruit there? I get damp soil and a note that I can’t identify, but fruit came to mind. It faded quickly into what is almost a warm, boozy comfort scent. I like it!

I’m not a fan of Valentine’s Day as I have no SO. However, I did wear a red top today and sprayed myself with Aedes des Venustas Pelargonium which is in a red bottle. After work I am meeting a girlfriend of mine whose SO has been away on a trip to Australia and New Zealand. We are celebrating Galentine’s day by going to a local Happy Hour.

Candy Heart Cake Bites for dogs?!?! I wonder if they have similar things for cats! We’ve been wondering how to wish our cats a happy Valentine’s day.

I’m in Champagne de Bois, because champagne seems on topic for today! Our workplace shows zero acknowledgment of the day, and even I forgot to wear pink. Oh well.

Hahaha, I first encountered a card from a cat some…5? years ago, when my cat-crazy boyfriend gave me a Valentine’s or birthday or something card “from the cats.” It was signed with the names of the cats, and was full of errors of grammar and orthography, as one might expect from cats. I knew my boyfriend was a nutso and could well imagine him writing this for me in character, but what I couldn’t understand was the card itself, which truly did seem to be from cats. In confusion, I asked him, “But who is this card SUPPOSED to be from?” And he stared at me and said, “…From cats,” as though *I* were the crazy one.

So, yes, as Amy says, it was very thoughtful of your cats to give you a card. Yup.

    Hey Guys!

Happy Valentines! It’s also Ash Wednesday! Because of how early I work, I was not able to make it to Mass today!

    2) I have a date with one of my old college friends tonight! He lives in Seattle and I don’t get to see him often enough, so this was perfect!

    3) SOTD: Black Jade, in all it’s subtle and wonderful rosy/spice goodness. It’s a great way to do rose.

    4) Saw Shape of Water last night. Thoroughly and completely beautiful; a beautiful and wonderful romance. Del Toro takes all the old film/TV tropes- beauty and the beast, the shadowy Soviet spies, the cruel fanatic G man- and remixes it into a lyrical and beautiful fairy tale. Nothing is wasted, everything is considered. Just plain wonderful. A special shout out to Sally Hawkins, who evokes both Charlie Chaplin and Greta Garbo in lived, mute yet evocative physical acting.
The entire cast however is pitch perfect and amazing.
Wanna see a romance for Valentine’s Day? See this one.

I watched Phantom Thread at the weekend . I liked but didn’t love it…although Daniel Day Lewis was good I thought. Maybe just a bit of weakness in the story that caused my mind to wander….I was far more interested in the sister than the muse/wife. Nice car though.
Will give Peter Rabbit a miss. But Shape of Water is fab. I Tonya next?

I had the same feelings about Phantom Thread- DDL’s perfomrance is VERY mannered, and the hidden thoughts and world of the bossy, sharped witted sister seemed far more interesting!

Allow me to drag on Peter Rabbit a wee bit more: the soundtrack is the SUUUUCCCCCKKKK.

I am over the moon with Shape of Water.

The Post and I, Tonya remain for Oscar films. ( I saw Mudbound last year- short take: it’s damn good, but a wee bit heavy handed.)
I am not sure about I Tonya- I live in Portland (moved here from Brooklyn) , and her family & family friends are incredibly toxic. The community she grew up in was utterly awful, and I am not sure if I want to see a fictionalized version of that.

I am pretty excited about The Post- that is for Friday. Then Black Panther next week!

Yeah, I might see it next week- but I was in junior high when all that mess went down, and then when I came out here I did public service in that community. It’s a toxic community, and I can see why TH would want to develop ANY WAY to escape it.

I sort of quietly loved Phantom Thread, but it may be my own weirdness and love of PT Anderson and the way certain themes play out across his work. One thing I thought was brilliant was how mediocre the clothes he designed were, marking the end of an era of bespoke clothing not made by major talents. His place in the world was disappearing. And there is a scene where he is curled up sick in bed in which his every gesture is so exactly right that it slayed me. (This might just be because I recently had the flu!)

Best of good mornings from monsoon-city, NST. Auckland has been taking a tropical turn lately, and very tedious it is. I’m conscious, too, that I’ve been lately been only flickering in and out of NST (well, NST and a few other parts of my life, actually). The thing, I’ve been trying to get to the office dearly enough to get in a couple of undisturbed hours of work before the interruptions get to work, and by the time I surface, it’s so late everywhere else but Australia, I just don’t bother to post.

So. Life is very busy now. It’s mostly good, but there really are some undistinguished, anti-social, self-referential bounders among my colleagues. Perfume helps. I’ve been deep into my Chanels on work days. There is nothing like 31 Rue Cambon for a confrontational encounter. There is nothing like La Pausa for solid work and writing. There is nothing like Bel Respiro for anything at all.

Today, however, the purrs and I are having a late morning, so I’m not even dressed, and it’s already after six! AND I ‘m going to do some ironing before I shower, so there, document X. You can just sit there and wait my pleasure! I’m wearing the gorgeous aftermath of 1270 from a quick bistro meal with yesterday’s Valentine ( the dear man is also lolling about this morning, and send his regards), and Eric is curled in my lap, reading what I write, and purring his little head off. Alexander is looking wise and intense, sitting on the windowsill watching a fat pigeon strutting up and down on the other side of the glass. Silly pigeon! Titus has taken a yellow peg into a corner and is guarding it with every ounce of his stripey little being, because those yellow pegs can be very, very tricksy, as we all know. Life Chez Waterdragon is normal, therefore, and long may that last.

I’ve just been dug in the ribs and ticked unmercifully to get up and fetch the second cups of tea. Lazy man! But never mind. Second cups it is. Be well, all.

    Derek Lam Afloat

I tried to pick out the notes before I looked this up on Fragrantica– I thought it was sort of a rosy aquatic musk – with maybe a little pear. Wrong! I guess it’s all Mamosa.

Sure it’s not unique, but it’s very nice and I do like it. But the genre is similar enough to Ralph Lauren Romance – which I already have – something I like and can spray with abandon that won’t smell strange – when that is necessary.

Those dog-treat hearts are adorable! I’ve always viewed Valentine’s Day as a fantastic excuse to have cute treats/pastries, which is also how I treat most other days, if I’m being honest. But who doesn’t love a pastry with a THEME, you know?

Today I’m in Lolita Lempicka’s Sweet. It was a not-great blind buy a long time ago and I pretty much wrote it off as not being at all my cup of tea (who could ever have guessed that something called “Sweet” would be so extremely…sweet?) but it seemed like a great choice for today, and so far I’m not regretting it…maybe for me this is best viewed as a novelty V-Day scent!

I got it a swap over the summer and tried it right away. I was disappointgly underwhelmed, and actually misplaced it in a hand bag. Just found it yesterday, so gave it a second try, and WOW! what a difference. I would really like to find a discounted bottle…????????

Maybe its like the tea shipped to the UK with the camels….once tea began being shipped by air, it took a hit in popularity. Needed those camels. Your handbag was the perfect aging vehicle.

I really like it. I’m not usually a fruity note lover, but Pulp is special. It lasts a long time on me, unlike the other Byredos I’ve tried, and it has a nice woody drydown. It’s cheerful–not as cheerful as Bombay Bling, which is a party in a bottle, but smile-inducing for being just fun.

Dropped the dog off for a full dental under anesthetic today, but the vet just called and said he didn’t think it was prudent given her pulmonary hypertension, so they are doing an unsedated hand scaling instead, which I feel quite relieved about. I really appreciate my great vet. So I get to pick her up at lunch time, yay! I am wearing Silver Iris, my wedding perfume.

SOTD is Cartier’s Baiser Vole Essence de Parfum. The green lily in it amplifies the lily Valentine’s bouquet on the mantel, and the amped vanilla in the Essence mixes nicely with the fragrance of the heart-shaped lemon semolina cake baking in the oven. So I guess that means I smell like my house?

Good grief, I feel like I haven’t posted in forever- life is crazy you guys! Happy Valentine’s Day for those who enjoy/celebrate it! I am in Genre because my love really likes it. Also in a bright red blouse and Tom Ford’s Plum Lush lippie (which is my favorite). Feeling pretty festive.

My guy has to leave this weekend for 5-7 weeks. It’s the longest we’ve ever been apart and we’re both feeling pretty bummed about it (though it’s a great opportunity for him). He sent me the biggest bouquet of roses I’ve ever seen in my life to work this morning. The poor people walking past my office door probably can’t see me behind them ha! I’m going to run over to L’Occitane and get him Eau de Cade. He sniffed it a couple of weeks ago in the airport and really liked it.

    Hugs to all!

Wow, 5-7 weeks is a long time! I hope it pays off for both of you. Your roses sound amazing! I was working at a bakery many many many years ago when a man walked in with what must have been 10 dozen long-stemmed roses, in mixed colors. The bouquet was so massive he had to sling it over his shoulder to carry it (it was a couple of feet across.) It will always stand out in my mind as one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen.

This is terrific, very jasmine up front on me, which I love. It is not much of a shape shifter but I am getting some smokiness now that is delicious. I am infatuated with this. The lavender is under the surface aftrer it opens but holds it all together. I may have to OWN this.

Going for auspicious with various favorites of the moment this week. Today it’s Dryad, which I really love and have been wearing a lot. Yesterday was Hollyrose, the ad copy of which I maligned here when it first came out, but then I smelled it and I really liked it. Oops. I’ve read various things described as a leathery asphalt rose but this is the first one that fits the description and works for me. Not a love love, but definitely hits a cord. Monday was Vilhelm’s Harlem Bloom, which I also really like a lot. The Vilhelm’s are so spendy that I am bummed I like a number of them, but at least most come in the 18ml bottles.
