Tuesday scent of the day 2/13

Posted by Robin on 13 February 2018 283 Comments

Happy World Radio Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Heretic Parfums Pistil Whip, which I can't seem to make up my mind about. Tea at the moment is my usual morning Irish Breakfast.

Reminder: on 2/16 we're celebrating the Lunar New Year...wear an auspicious fragrance to ring in the Year of the (Earth) Dog.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: image shows Pug in a Mug silicone tea infusers, available on Amazon and lots of other places.

Galgos are Spanish Greyhounds and are used for hunting in Europe. Very bad things happen at the end of hunting season. I recommend careful googling so as to avoid the kind of images that will haunt you for years.

Yes, these dogs are treated very badly during hunting season, and worse is to come. Rescuing Galgos, as you have done, is an act of love…

I volunteer in greyhound and Galgo rescue, so I see and hear more than most.
There are some lovely rescue societies in Spain.
            I recommend

For lovely stories of trust and love.

My Galgo Ollie adores perfumes, and often shows his approval or lack thereof before I leave the house. He is a Shalimar addict

Argh yes, I read an article about the horrible treatment of those sweet dogs, just thinking about it right now makes me furious and sad.

Thank you for the warning. On the happier end of the dog photos spectrum there is this, which I came across yesterday and still have trouble believing is real.

I am wearing Man in Black, by Bvlgari today. So comforting.

And…..my first Back Up Bottle ever arrived today. Now I feel like a real perfumista!

Its Fille en Aiguilles, the fragrance that made me love perfume again and the one that sent me down the rabbit hole, exactly 2 years and 3 days ago! :-)
I found a very good deal, could not resist knowing this one is leaving the SL export/50 ml line….

Congrats! That’s a good one. I bought quite a few backups when the repackaging panic hit last year. Just bought my final backup of Bapteme du Feu (I think). ;-)

The upside of the repackaging, some SL’s are being discounted.
I managed to grab A la nuit a year ago for 50 euros.
That was months before the news about the repackaging came out. Thinking about it now, it was an early sign, they were already preparing for the changes.

The new bottles are huge and a but chunky, and to be honest, I dont like the design as much as the old ones.
I hope they dont change the bell jars!

Just to make sure we are talking about the same scent…

Its Man in Black (a boozy spicy leather you can find in almost every perfume store that has like 50 flankers haha ;)

NOT Bvlgari Black (the tea tarry/leather vanilla in the round bottle, i think its discontinued – I swapped my bottle last year…too much powdery vanilla on my skin, though I love the opening phase).

No I was with you. I love Bvlgari Black. It’s the Man in Black and the flankers I’m not sure I like. Definitely worth another try though. I got the bottles pretty inexpensively.

            :)
Man in black works best for me in cold weather.
Its not my most worn fragrance (I think it stood there untouched for months and monthd) but I am glad I have small bottle when I am in the mood for a straightforward sweet comfort scent that does not offend half the whole office. ;)
(One spray is enough for me)

Sometimes my husband wears it and I think he wears it better haha.

Btw, the flankers of MiB do nothing for me.
Or is Man in black actually a flanker to Bvlgari Man??? ????????

Now I’m curious about how you’ve specifically pinpointed the very day you went down the rabbit hole :D I suppose I’d attribute mine to the day I placed my first sample order from TPC, which was just over 3 years ago.

And I still have that photo in my online archive.

I still remember that day, i was so happy and excited, and also a bit nervous – I had never bought a bottle of perfume THAT expensive….two years later and I am not even blinking an eye when I see prices like that…????

I am in Coromandel today thanks to a friend who sent me a sample and I smell great. Not sure why I had a block about this one although I suspect it is well beyond my budget.

Heretic Perfumes tend to fall in the undecided category for me most of the time.

Coromandel was tough for me at first! One of those very sophisticated scents. I like it more now that I’ve given it a few tries but it’s still not one I reach for often. When I do though, the drydown is worth it – there’s something in its structure that reminds me of a few Amouages but I’m not sure if that’s a legit comparison. You do smell great today!!

Scent Twin! I finally found my edt decant – I went in on a split of the huge bottle right before they replaced the edt with the lesser edp – and was so excited that there was no other fragrance in contention for SOTD. I wish it hadn’t taken me so long to like this one; maybe I’d have a FB of my own. Since perfume is meant to be worn, however, I will use it up with a smile on my face!

Pistil Whip is such a great name! I haven’t tried any of the Heretic scents, but I DID get the Scandalwood candle, and while I don’t really care for the scent, the disappearing ink on the glass is a very cool effect.

Wearing Parfum Sacre today, but as I smell traces of Feminite du Bois on my coat, I wish there had been just a drop left in the sample so I could have worn that today instead.

In Trayee today. I did not wear it for a long time and I forgot how wonderful this perfume is but how difficult it is for me to handle sandalwood in many perfumes. I poured on myself half of my sample early this morning and despite liking the opening as usual, now I am having a hard time dealing with the drydown. I hope not to develop a headache, because it is not easy to scrub it off. No matter how many times I try it, Trayee it is not for me.

SOTD is the Robin-inspired layering of Eau des Merveilles and Eau Claire des Merveilles, for what is supposed to be another clear, crisp, sunny day here.

Pulled out my sample of Irisss which is probably the first sample I ever sought out and bought – and wisely did the tiniest dab this time. I’m happy to report that I’m **not** getting the prominent whiskey note that clobbered me on prior wears. The downside is that it’s not projecting much either. I’ll add to my dab here in a bit and see where this baby goes today.

    Those tea pugs are cute.

And I have a sample of Pistil Whip awaiting me, once I get done with the Vanilla Quest.

Speaking of which, I ordered some vanilla-y oil samples from Cocoa Pink, thinking, well, the spendy vanillas didn’t work for me and maybe I should try some at the other end of the spectrum. I tested two last night and two more this morning. These are tending to be verrrry foody and sweet: Frosted Eyelet is giving me tooth decay as I write and Black Vanilla is surprisingly nice. Triple Vanilla Dream was a lot like melted vanilla ice cream (yummy. still not ma thang), but I suspect CP’s version of Spiriteuse Double Vanille is going to be the winner: vanilla extract, vanilla ice cream, faint threads of something floral, rich benzoin, a slightly burnt-sugar undertone.

I’m testing oils, but these also come as 1 oz perfume spray for $17.50. I have some DSH vanillas to test after I finish the two other Cocoa Pinks, so we’ll see.

Still on your vanilla quest! Have you tried Vanille Insensee? I like that one because of the citrus top note.

Nope. I am not much of a citrus lover (every now and then I love one, but it’s generally not a favorite), and I don’t think this one would be up my alley given the notes. I have a half-used bottle of Shalimar Light if I get the urge for lemon vanilla. :)

Oh, I don’t have any objection to foody, particularly desserty, I just wasn’t fond of the overwhelming and sweet melted-ice-cream of Tihota. Vanilla Smoke has always sounded utterly swoonworthy, but the price is much too steep for me to contemplate.

I also have skin that doesn’t always want to cooperate (sometimes it eats everything up; sometimes it projects like crazy) so I’ve avoided naturals and oils to some extent, assuming they won’t work well for me.

The Aftelier samples are cheap and she gives you enough to get a feel for it. The only thing I don’t like about ordering samples is the high cost of shipping. Perhaps you can offer to host a samples order for splitting? (I did it once and it was a win-win for me and the splittees as we all ended up paying less than if we had to order ourselves….besides, pretty much only the ones who participated in a bottle split were included in the Aftelier samples split).

Inspired by Eleebelle’s comment, my SotD is Feminite du Bois from a sample. I have recently reorganized my samples-all 110 of them- which may not seem like a lot to some, but they were starting to overwhelm me. In my mind I have a plan to methodically sample and either keep or rehome all of them in the next few months.

I’m off to do some Valentine’s Day shopping. I’m thinking chocolate covered strawberries sound good…

Unfortunately, since I bought it blind, it’s one of only two Duchaufours that I actively dislike. (The other is Patchouli Patch.) Someday I’ll sell it or swap it away.

Ooh, that’s a bummer. I wore Patchouli Patch last week and didn’t actively dislike it, but it wasn’t my thing either. In that beautiful bottle, I’m sure SOMEBODY would be happy to trade for the AdV.

It is a beautiful bottle, and I can’t recall L’AP doing any other bottles (of that type) in colored glass, and nothing else frosted. That may have influenced my blind leap! ;)

Began the day in Miller Harris l’air de rien. At first, I did not know what to think of this one, but it’s quickly grown on me. Driving home at lunch to pick up a just-delivered Coco Mademoiselle Intense edp. So excited!

It is beautiful, exactly as described- intense Coco Mad- but more than the sum of its amplified parts. Bought 1st bottle of original edp almost a decade ago. Every bottle bought since has been weaker, screechier than the 1 before it. Intense doesn’t just feel like Chanel is merely giving us the original coco mad formula at a higher price. It’s elevated from the original. I was 25 when original debuted in ‘01 & remember well how it smelled. You could go nowhere in public w/o smelling it. Intense has the throw & punch of the original in the opening but in ~15 mins, it becomes its own gorgeous thing of high quality, earthy patchouli blended with the rose jasmine. That opening had me swearing I could detect a spicy-soapy quality of the original Coco. The patchouli tho is so prevalent, no worries whatsoever about a soap fest. Tonka and vanilla tamp down original’s screechy (to me) white musk in the dry down. I’m not sure I’ve come across a more beautifully blended fragrance. After 2-3 hours, CMI became a skin scent and a freaking gorgeous one at that. If you were thinking of getting the 12 hr silage that used to happen w/ original CM, you may be disappointed. If patchouli isn’t your bag, don’t even. It is so there from start to finish. I see myself saving this for nights out (but will totally be wearing this to office for next week lol). Don’t see myself wearing in the summer 98% humidity + 98F heat. Even so, I’m kicking myself for not paying the extra $30 to purchase the 3.4 oz instead of 1.7 oz. Silly me.

Carroty indeed!! I am wearing this today as well, and I, like Robin, totally succumbed to the winter blahs and bought this. I actually really like how carroty it is, that’s what nabbed me in the first place, but I find the performance disappointing.

I’m just starting to explore iris scents, and I wasn’t entirely sure what people meant by “carroty,” as the one iris scent I like (FM’s Iris Poudre) doesn’t really have any notes like that. So I had to laugh when I spritzed it and thought, “Oh, so carroty means it smells EXACTLY like carrots.” I’m not sure if I like it or not, will need to give it a full day some time soon.

I kind of wasn’t feeling anything perfume-wise today, so sprayed on the remainder of a Grace Coddington sample. Almost like wearing nothing, and its light, tart citrusy freshness made a nice palate cleanser.

It’s basically just a tart, fresh rose barely-there spritzer/cologne. It’s nearly gone now except for a faint musk. I don’t think I’d pay $80 or even $50 for something like this eventhough I love the bottle. I’m sure there are cheaper versions of this.
Barbara Bui, though it’s not heavy, lasts a good 12 hours on me.

TDC Sublime Balkiss, that I got years ago when I ordered estagnons of both Divine Bergamote and Bois d’Iris strait from the TDC website. They sent me mini bottles of both this one and of Oriental Lounge.
Still very stupidly enjoying the Dutch speed skating. It may not be going as well as in 2014, which to be honest was really extraordinary, but still, 4th gold medal. I can never get excited about Dutch football but I adore watching this sport, it must be hereditary, I distinctly remember my late grandfather always watching the skating. He would have loved this.

At Children’s Hospital with my son for routine tests. Always a little depressing in the day hospital. Did not want to wear anything too strong so just have some Bronze Goddess whipped lotion on my hands.

Yesterday my bargain travel spray of Bvlgari Amarena arrived. To my nose it fits squarely in the scented make-up perfume category…like Lipstick Rose. Fragrantica tells me the powder is rose and cherry/pomagranate not the usual rose and violet… but it is in that genre. I may buy another travel spray. I love the make-up scents.

    2) Am in a quilted gold Chinese style silk jacket, black shirt and slacks. Will be going out with friends to see Shape of Water (Coco plays too early in the day for me to get downtown) to wash the bad memory of Peter Rabbit away!

I loved Shape of Water but, prepare your mind to be in a fantasy world and try to just let go and not try to figure it out or make sense of it. Hope I am communicating this the right way. Basically if you are a realistic type of person I think you should save you money and skip this one, but if you allow yourself to become entranced by it I think its well worth it. The director pays attention to every minute detail in the film and deserved the oscar nod.

Maybe I’m too much of a realist, too, as I have zero desire to see this. My H doesn’t either. We’re both engineer-y types (see below) (worked in a related field.) I’d never have put my finger on it quite that way, but ya, fantasy-whatever never really appeals to me.

I prefer realism, myself, and am not drawn to fantasy or sci-fi at all, but I really enjoyed this one and agree it was quite beautifully done and think it’s a big screen kind of movie. It’s a theme that’s already been done ie: beauty and the beast etc. and I thought the characters were accessible and engaging and “real” so it’s not way out there in the fantasy realm.

SOTD is SL Vetiver Oriental from a swap here on NST. It’s very nice and if a FB landed in my lab, I’d keep it. I think this one is harder to find for some reason. I never see it at any discounters.

Yesterday, I was very cranky, so planning on adjusting my mood today. We may head up to the Portland area to check out an Airstream dealership to get a feel for ‘em. Most RV’s made is the US are absolute crap, but Airstream has a pretty good reputation, so I’ve heard.

Or we just may hang around practicing the Art of Accomplishing Nothing. We did get a lot done yesterday, so today may be a day of rest. Cheers all!

It was painful tracking it and seeing it transferred from one place to another. I don’t understand with all the barcodes how things can go so badly astray. Anyway, I am wearing it today and thinking I should have gotten two 10ml bottles and not just one. I’ll wear this a lot, and I think it will layer well with other scents, too.

SOTD MFK A la rose…from Petunias generous package, thank you!

Burst of gorgeous fresh roses, with a whiff of something that strongly reminds me of Shiseido moisturizer/toner – wish I knew what that was! I smell a little something green, or stem/leaf-like.

few moments later I smell what I interpret as a light melon scent, then a few moments later what I interpret as a light “caramel/patchouli” scent – I know these notes are not in there – it just what I recognize from other perfumes, and may have erroneously categorized it based on fragrantica pictures :) this is my least favorite part, but it does go away.

then, it sort of settles into a very light cloud of roses. I only sprayed 1 time on my arm. While it settles softly, it does pack a punch. I am really enjoying it!

Sounds lovely! Your Shiseido description made me think of the Swanicoco (Korean) products I’ve been using lately. They have a lush, wet, rose scent with a hint of something green. I love the products and the smell. This is a broad generalization, but it seems that Asian products tend to be scented to smell like perfume while Western products tend to be scented to smell “natural.” I’ll take the former! I love the smell of the AmorePacific products, too.

I’m wearing Bruno Fazzolari Ummagumma on one arm and Aesop HWYL on the other. They’re very different from one another.

Ummagumma has turned into a sort of gourmand incense oriental but when I first applied it, it smelled so much like room temperature Jameson whisky that I gagged! It’s sort of what I was expecting By Killian Single Malt to smell like.

HWYL is like walking through a forest in November, bonfire smoke in the air and herbs underfoot.

I tested Ummagumma yesterday and it reminded me so distinctly of something I wore recently. I *think* it was Chergui. I didn’t get Jameson (or any other) whisky, but boozy notes don’t always jump out at me. I enjoyed it a lot, and wonder what it’s like sprayed – I dabbed it from a sample vial.

The whisky moments were very short lived for me, it lasted at most a minute before flowering out into the incense/gourmand.

Elie Saab EdP today! I have gorgeous deluxe sample courtesy of HolyNeroli’s generous freebie, and I’m loving it.

The neroli is darker than I’d usually wear, probably from the honey and jasmine. It’s both comforting and complicated!

I started the morning in Profumum Roma Confetto, which I had high hopes for as an HG almond contender. Sadly (or happily – it’s $$$) no dice. Actually, I quite disliked the deep drydown which got way too sweet and caramel-y. I’ve encountered that caramel-ic note in other perfumes and really dislike it. It appears in Yves Rocher Vanille Noire, and Flowerbomb (iirc) as well as some others. I’m now wondering what it comes from, as it seems to be a note rather than an accord.

Anyhoo, moved on to Aroma M Geisha Vanilla Hinoki edp, which is smelling extra green and dry after the Confetto fiasco. Enabler pin to elisap who posted yesterday that the entire Aroma M store is 30% off (still active today; not sure when it ends.)

I sprayed myself down in Vanilla Hinoki to make sure I *need* a bottle. I do; one has been purchased; it will be up for split this weekend.

Confetto is on my must sniff list. I wonder if the dry down will bother me? (Probably not bc I’m an old school Flowerbomb fan. ????)

Yes to almonds, but caramel doesn’t work for me either, and Yay! for Geisha Vanilla Hinoki. :D

I didn’t like Confetto either. Mostly because it smelled flat to me. It has no sparkle. I still have a partial sample floating around somewhere. I feel the way about TF Noir de Noir, which most people love.
OTOH, I like Vanille Noire but don’t love it. I never got caramel notes from it. I just found it to be simple Mandarine/vanilla. I am not usually a fan of straight-up vanilla scents. Love the orientals though.

Glad to be of service ???? I’m pondering a backup of Nobara-Cha oil. I just got it recently and it’s level is now at the same level as my VH which is about 1.5 years old. But I think I initially wore VH a lot too and slowed way down, as with everything else.

    Sota: Voyage
Kind of on the fence about this one. The opening, which lasts for a LONG time, has a medicinal note, similar to L’Elephant. At this point in my life, I feel like I must love it from start to finish. ????

I’m totally with you on the start to finish love. Too expensive not to 100% love it during every stage.

Infusion d’Iris Absolue from the lovely tiffanie via the freebiemeet! Wow, it’s so much more quiet than the older Id’I decant I wore yesterday. I also find the benzoin more prominent. This is really great for the office.

A slightly weird Tuesday for me. Just a bunch of little things have been off kilter, resulting in a “Huh?” kind of day.

SOTD = Amouage Beloved, the last of a sample courtesy of MMKinPA and the freebie meet. Gorgeous stuff!

SOTD was Alia Paris. I had to work closely with my boss today so I chose, what I consider to be, a lighter scent.

I don’t wear it often but it feels sort of seasonless to me.
