Thursday scent of the day 2/8

Posted by Robin on 8 February 2018 319 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Demeter Beetroot, which not so long ago I certainly would have thought too weird to wear.

Reminder: 2/9 will be Broadened Horizons Friday...wear a fragrance you initially thought was too [insert adjective] for you to wear. Suggested by Geordie.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Good morning! Wearing FM Musc Ravageur today. I might have done one too many spritz – I am hunkering down in my cubicle, hoping no one notices 🙂

One spray extra of Musc Ravageur is a lot. I did that when I knew we’d go to an business party direct after work and the woman in the cubicle across the room complained. And it was a large space.

      You smell fantastic, though!

Haha no worries. I have nice and matter-of-fact coworkers, I am sure they will let me know if it’s too much. I did go to the bathroom and tried to wipe it off a little, can’t tell if it worked.

Good luck to you, and you smell like Wonder Woman! I would love it if someone came into a meeting wearing No. 19. It’s so funny that so much perfume is purchased and I smell so little of it in real life – it’s a big world!

I smell very little perfume too, I am surprised because I see a lot of people for my work and I rarely smell perfume on other people.

I rarely do either. And it’s to the embarrassing point that if I do smell perfume on someone I immediately say, “you smell great! What are you wearing?” (if I don’t recognize it)! They probably think I’m weird but I’m okay with that ha!

I rarely run across scented peeps in the wild either. On the odd occasion that I do, I don’t really care what they’re wearing – I’m just happy to smell something.

I must have particularly scented cowworkers, then, because I smell perfumes in the wild all the time! Which is funny, because working in clean rooms means we aren’t supposed to be wearing any perfume at all. (No one cares, because our clean rooms are very dirty for clean rooms, but still!)

I had a particularly horrible scent experience last night at the gym. A man wearing roughly a liter of Very Manly Perfume was in the weight room, and with every bead of sweat he produced, I got punched in the face with gust of his perfume. Ugh, I could taste it. I had to leave in a hurry.

In Impossible Iris today as I bounce back and forth between wearing roses for Feb, Iris with Unidia and whatever I happen to grab first in the hurried, harried month of Feb.
Between surgical recovery, a leaky roof and financial auditors at work, life is very busy.
This scent does fit into Broadened Horizons, as a few years ago, the thought of having sufficient variety to follow any sort of a daily/weekly /monthly theme would have been unthinkable.

What’s the difference between beetroots and beets? If you say “beets,” does that technically include the greens?

I don’t know — when I think of beets, as a food, I think of beet root. I know some people eat the greens, but I am not one of those people.

Wow, I had no idea that Demeter had come out with a beetroot scent! But I suppose it was inevitable, now that rhubarb, carrot, and celery are the main ‘ingredients’ in a number of perfumes. Personally, I’m pulling for rutabaga to be the next starring vegetable in a fragrance 😉

Speaking of rhubarb – one of my favorite notes – today’s SOTD is Idyllwild. HAGD, all.

Lots of talk about Idyllwild lately. I was just in Idyllwild last weekend! And I love rhubarb! I guess I need to try this. Where is everyone getting theirs? I just looked at the Ineke shop online and there are no stores that sell it nearby. I know Anthropologie used to have some but that was years ago. I don’t want to spring for a bottle without trying it.

I’m continuing my MFK exploration by wearing Grand Soir today. What wonderful stuff this is! It’s amber with some magical touch that broadens it out. Maybe the benzoin + vanilla but it makes me want to take a bite out of my own wrist! My kitty Kayla was quite interested in it and gave me a serious wash earlier, too.

Uh oh…. You got me at “magical touch”!

I have limited experience with MFK so far. My silly non-French-speaking brain had been uninterested in Grand Soir because it had filed it away (unsniffed) as a “leather scent” – gah! Now I will remember: soir ≠ cuir

      Going on the to-try list.

Vintage Shalimar extrait. I love it to death, but today it just reminds me of my mother getting ready for an event, heels clapping on the parquet flooring in nervous anticipation, and it annoys me and feels sweeter than usual. Maybe she wasn’t nervous, but you know in the air that something is different than a regular evening. Amazing, the way fragrance conures up memories.

Really? I feel like my evening perfumes last longer than my daytime ones. Not sure why. I almost always smell last night’s perfume when I’m making coffee, and often for hours afterward.

Now that I’m thinking about it, it really doesn’t make any sense that my nighttime perfumes last 4x longer or more… For instance, I can still smell the Tauerville When We Cuddle that I applied last night around 7 pm (and topped up a few hours later.) It’s 1p where I am, so that’s 16 hours from the last application. I wore Reminiscence Eau de Patchouli yesterday, which I also applied twice (about 12 decant sprays total) and could barely smell it a couple of hours later.

I had to wait out yesterday’s the-night-before perfume, too. I wore Teint de Neige and was still getting whiffs of it 16 hours later. *is perplexed*

    In Caron Parfume Sacre today.

One of my co-workers told me that I always smell good, but different from other women’s perfumes. I guess she meant I do not smell of the regular mainstream ones most of the time. Nothing wrong with that, anyway. She wanted to know what I always wear. Well, the list is long…, but she made my day with her compliment and I appreciate it! 🙂

Same here. Usually very few people remember what they wear. I just wonder if they do not want to say it or they just do not pay attention to the name of the perfumes. I assume that as long as they try it in the store and like it that is more than enough to make the purchase?

I had to de-lurk specifically to reply to you on this because I feel exactly the same way! Beet juice especially is the most beautiful color, and I’ve been drinking a lot of beet/carrot juice lately because the rooty flavor reminds me that spring will eventually come!

Not sure what to wear today—still in the dregs of yesterday’s AG Le Chevrefeuille and eagerly (nervously?) awaiting a sample of Andrea Maack Coven in the mail…between this and the beets, I must be craving dirt myself!

Yeah, beets themselves could totally be my “I never thought I’d like it” for this week’s theme because until recent years I thought they tasted like a straight-up mouthful of dirt! I’m really excited about Coven, I really like evocative outdoor scents. Do you happen to know if the scent in the black bottle is different from the scent in the clear bottle? Luckyscent has the same notes for both but Fragrantica has two differing entries…

I quite liked Lavanila. I tried the pure vanilla one and have some of the coconut one to try too.

The Pure Vanilla one is straightforward and simple to my nose. It smells on the sweet side initially with some musk but then it branches out with some patchouli in the drydown at least to me. It is very vanilla focused…front and center which I can’t get enough of right now but some might find it too much.

I tried this at Bloomingdales once and liked it. They are strong, though!

Based on various Google results: the PR says it means “sweet dreams.” One etailer has a longer explanation: “It’s believed that amethysts chase away nightmares and bring clarity to our dreams. This is why amethysts are called ashlemah, meaning “that which makes happy dreams.” But it’s also Hebrew: “to fulfill/make whole/complete, or to bring to a state of ‘shalom’.”

FYI, the individual 10-ml sprays from the gift set sometimes end up on ebay. 😉

SOLN Aedes de Venustas Pelargonium, from a sample from the very generous ScentSpirit – thank you!

I love it. But it smells similar or like a mix of terre d’hermes and sel de vetiver – i’m sure mostly because those are two scents that I just happened to have smelled before this one (it’s all about context!). It’s really good, but I don’t see myself springing for a bottle given the similarities.

SOTD chamade edt. Chamade is becoming a good friend of mine. I find it really easy to wear, such a great companion, interesting but not overpowering. A little old fashioned, but not too much. Sometimes I really want to spritz myself 4 or 5 times and I can do that with Chamade and know I won’t stink. Thank you Chamade.

Sunny and just above freezing here. Vanilla Search continues with Perry Ellis Oud Black Vanilla Absolute. Which is quite nice — and cheap at the discounters, running about $36 for 100ml — without being my Vanilla Holy Grail material.

Just got a letter yesterday from the Commandant of the Corps of Cadets at Virginia Tech recognizing Gaze’s Dean’s List 1st semester GPA. I’m so proud.

This. Feta works, too. And I like a nut in the mix, too — walnuts, pine nuts, etc.

I really hate dealing with beets for some reason, though, so I have to talk myself into being willing to cook them.

OMG OMG WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?

    https://www.fragrantica.com/perfume/Roccobarocco/Mouse-2988.html

The few reviews for both the men’s and women’s versions are positive, but obviously not many people got past the name to try it.

I’m looking through the fragrances by the perfumer, Maricio Cerizza, and realizing I haven’t tried a single one. I’ve been curious about Lye by Maison Gabriela Chieffo and something from the Profumi di Pantelleria line.

Has anyone tried any of his fragrances?

SOTM is Un Matin d’Orage, which was totally random. Usually this one is tucked away with my warmer weather scents. I like it, but it has the feel of bridesmaids about it. Bridesmaids not forced to wear the same outfit, but wedding accoutrements none the less. So this is a fragrance I would have thought was too wedding to wear 🙂

SotD is La Chasse Aux Papillons. If I wear it, spring will come right?????

I was out at the local mall the other day wasting time and decided it has been ages since I’ve been in a Victoria’s Secret so I wandered in. Well, apparently they’ve changed their sales strategy since my last visit. I was immediately approached by a sales lady who introduced herself to me and asked my name. She then handed me a large shopping bag and asked me what size bra and panty that I wore. Um….excuse me? I mean, I know it’s her job and everything but I was just a little taken aback. Call me old-fashioned but I’ve never been asked that before within 30 seconds of meeting someone. I think a better approach would have been to offer to help me find my size, or offer to measure/fit me if I was unsure of my size. I left with nothing and won’t be back. Humph.

I used to love Victoria’s Secret. Now, it’s terrible. Most importantly, the bras are not good quality. I’m not going to pay their prices for crappy bras. And the stores are loud and bright and just awful. I buy mine online or in department stores now.

Oh, agreed. I think I’m older than you are, O, but I remember the days when they sold nightgowns and underthings one might refer to as “elegant.” I once owned a beautiful turquoise satin chemise with three-inch ivory lace trim from VS (I think it might still be in my cedar chest somewhere…) that was really well-made and a joy to wear. They don’t sell anything like that now.

They used to play classical music in the stores! I have a box set of classical CDs from them that I used to listen to quite a bit. Pretty floral tissue paper, fake London address on everything – it was a gimmick then too but at least it didn’t feel trashy!

I know you loved a perfume of that era (Victoria) and I cherished a bottle of Her Majesty’s Rose.

Their bras and underwear never fit me well so I can’t say I ever spent much time shopping there. And the hard sell on the bra that the OP experienced would be totally offputting.

Good morning, all. I’m beginning to get the new job into my head, and that’s enough horizon broadening for me at the moment. My SOTD is the well-known and much-loved Bel Respiro, not weird, not a learning curve, not anything but gorgeous damp flowers in a dawn garden. I’m too tired to rise to any occasions right now, even perfume ones, so this week’s project is beyond me.

I’ve been awake since before two this morning, and when Eric cried quietly at the bedroom door, I let him in. He purred until I thought he would fall over, and snuggled in. Then the Stripies arrived, and it all went down hill. Titus attacked Alexander, Alexander fought back, Eric took on both, and war broke out on the bed. Naturally, the dear man woke up (grumpy), the cats were ejected, Some Words Were Said ( fair enough; I think I deserve them, actually) and peace ensued. Everyone in the household is asleep again, except me. Heigh ho…goodness, but Bel Respiro is beautiful. I keep catching whiffs on my clothes, and then I huff my wrists. It’s just perfect: it’s the scent expression of an Impressionist painting.

Well, it’s early, but I’m hungry. I shall find an apron and make the dear man a strategically apologetic breakfast. Be well, all.

We have just two cats, and they’re both adults. Leaving the bedroom door open is typically the strategic thing to do, or they cry and scratch until we do. With the door open, they rarely cause a ruckus. Though sometimes they streak across the room and the bed (and my legs in it) lies in their path, and once in a while, they feel the need to knead their mommy at 4am.

I brought out OJ Orris Noir since I knew I’d be wearing it at some point this month (thanks Undina!) and wasn’t yet awake enough to make a bigger decision than that. One spray only, as I was nervous about carrots for breakfast. Now I’m wondering if my OJ carrots memory was misattributed here from Vanille d’Iris. ON is so far lighter and sweeter than I had remembered. Will see how it goes.

Good morning all! I just spritzed on some L’Occitane Honey Gentle Water, just because. To play along, I would say I probably thought this was too simple or sweet when I first tried it. I didn’t buy a bottle at the time and of course, I am kicking myself as it is discontinued. A lovely friend who relocated gave me her bottle when she moved away, so I think of her when I wear it.

I think L’Occitane is one of the biggest offenders with discontinuing/regrets, though I guess it is because most of their stuff is limited edition.

I really enjoyed Waterlily Sun even though I gave it away. If I didn’t have too much perfume, it could have stayed. IIRC it is similar to Leslie Blodgett Bare Skin that was released some years back. I have a bottle of that one.

    SotD = L’Heure Bleue edt

Enjoying Madame L’HB on this chilly morning. I tried it in the heat of summer. Ugh, no. I have on my very warm turquoise Stopover* sweater, fresh from the cedar chest. I smell antique-y today. 😀

I love the L’Heure Bleue 50 ml bottle, it’s a treat to look at and to hold. I wish there were a 30 ml spray bottle, but only the splash parfum is in that size, which is about 10 times the price of the edt. Wowza!

Thought I’d wear Mythique today, but I will wait and enjoy it this weekend. I’ve been called in to work to cover for a colleague who is sick.

Stay well, NSTers! Perfume is our penicillin.

I really like VCA Bois d’Iris; I’m enjoying Hiris. Iris Nobile is very pretty. I also love Heure Exquise. There are so many I haven’t tried though!!

I bought a 3 ml decant of Hiris that I only got 2 wears out of and could still barely smell – so I’d guess you’re probably not getting the full experience from a little dab. If it had had better projection on me, I’d have been close to finding my HG warm weather iris. It is really lovely.

SOTD: Chanel Cuir de Russie edt from the Exclusif line. I also have a 90s edt and a 10-15 year old parfum, and I really love ALL of them.

Any CdR lovers who can compare the edp?

I can’t give you a comparison, not being a CdR expert, but the edp smelled quite good to me.

No scent for me yet as I am still trying to figure out what orange scent it was that I loved from my freebie meet package from eswift – I misplaced it, cannot recall the name, but I loved it, and I recall that the review by Robin said something along the lines that it smelled like the whole orange grove, not only the flowers – does that ring a bell for anyone? It’s driving me a teensy bit nuts. 🙂

I figured it out – not PdE, but somehow that got me looking again and I found it – it was Fleurs d’oranger by L’artisan. Thanks for trying to help!

I’m wearing Stash this morning. I got up at 5:30 to get ready to ski but checked the weather on the mountain. It was 45F. I didn’t want to ski in mashed potatoes or slush so I went back to bed.

Working to use up some decants and in Heure Exquise today. I love it so much. I am trying to talk myself out of a bottle of it since I have No. 19 but there’s just enough differences I think I need one anyway!

Having both is definitely justified. Personally I don’t find them to be terribly similar, as HE is lacking the green notes that are so prominent in 19.

I’ve just now put on a few sprays of Iris Nazarena. When I first received a sample of this a long time ago from the very kind hamamelis (whom I never see here anymore! 🙁 ), I thought I hated the scent because it smelled like stale cardboard. Then I took a spray from a friend’s decant, and it was quite lovely and interesting. So I jumped at a generous offer from flopper of a travel spray of IN, and I’m glad I did, because it never smells like stale cardboard. A nice, carroty, rooty iris with some elegantly cool leather, incense, and a kind of oriental warmth at the base. It’s terribly interesting, which was not a positive descriptor in my book until maybe a year ago. Geez, I can’t believe I’ve been on NST for over two years.

I’ve been trying to justify buying a bottle of Iris Nazarena, while waiting for my tax refund. Just way to out of reach, but you are smelling beautiful and interesting!

I would describe it as a woody iris. Dry, no sweetness. Not as severe as Iris Silver Mist but along the same lines.

Continuing a month of iris perfumes with Strange Invisible Perfumes Dimanche. The listed notes are iris, hydro-distilled rose, honey, amber & cacao. I have a hard time describing this one other than to say it really smells like a botanical perfume, and it’s very lovely. Very pricey though. I have the older bottle design, and I got it on eBay for under $100 years ago.

Wearing VCA Midnight in Pairs on one arm and MH Fleurs de Sel on the other. The drydown on the former is is softer, and the latter is more sage-y.

Enjoying the bright sunny weather today while it lasts. Long range forecast is for a lot of rainy days in the next week. Sigh.

SOTD = Dame Passionfruit, Orange Blossom & Vetiver. This matches the bright sunshine so well! I’m looking forward to what it will smell like in spring or summer weather. Still working my way thru Dame samples, but this is looking like it might be a favorite.

SOTD was The Different Company “Adjatay”.

    Top: ylang-ylang and mandarin orange;
    Mid: tuberose, jasmine and heliotrope;
Base: castoreum, styrax, tonka , sandalwood and musk.

    Mostly harmless, sadly.

I received a bottle of Galop d’Hermes that I ordered from eBay. I’m 99% sure it’s legit. The bottle didn’t come with the leather cord or a booklet/insert, but the box was sealed (re-cellophaned?) has anyone purchased from a retailer Galop and how was your bottle presented. It smells fabulous and price was good… Both NM and Nordstrom near me don’t have any in stock, otherwise I’d swing by there and check them out. I might see if they have a tester at least. Thank you ????

I bought one from ebay as well, and it didn’t come with the cord 🙁 🙁 It did come with the booklet, though (I think?) My bottle is definitely legit, and Robin makes a good point about counterfeiting the bottle.

I’ve gotten bolder over time, well, except for the more masculine scents as I do not want to smell like a man. Two days ago, I wore a copious amount of Iris 39 and I had a scent aura of roses around me!

    SOTD = Dior Homme EDT

I am participating in Undina’s Month of Irises

This also fits the Broadended Horizons theme. There was a time when I was brainwashed to the gender exclusivity of perfumes. When I went to Department Store perfume counters, you would never see me in the men’s section. Anyway, IIRC, it was an NSTer (sheriG, maybe?) who mentioned liking Dior Homme and the rest was history – a lemminged bottle which I got on the cheap side from an online discounter. Dior Homme is often compared with Carner Barcelona D600. To me, while they both hav iris and vetiver, Dior Homme ileans quite masculine and the lavender stays prominent throughout its wearing. It also packs quite anounch that I did not dare go more than 2 spritzes. D600 is silky smooth, has no la ender and dries down to a soft vanilla.
