Tuesday scent of the day 1/23

Posted by Robin on 23 January 2018 282 Comments

Happy Pie Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Hiram Green Slowdive (Kevin's review is coming up later today). Tea at the moment is Kusmi Troika.

Reminder: on 1/26, wear one of your "top 10 of winter" fragrances (unless it's summer where you are, in which case wear one of your "top 10 of summer" scents)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the teapot is by Jaime Hayon for Kutani Choemon, and I am not sure if you can still buy it anywhere.

Lucky I have some blueberry pie for Pie Day!

My FIL is visiting and this morning I am having a breakfast of champions. Dosa with potato chaat, sambar dal soup and coconut chutney..washing it down with homemade chai tea. Ravi Shankar playing in the background..

Doctors appointments for me today and I am in Nocturnes by Caron

    Stay dry, happy and warm

Nocturnes!!! The closest to a signature scent for me…have had a vintage bottle in my rotation since 1983 when my first bottle was gifted to me by my best friend for a milestone birthday.

Are you wearing vintage or current formulation? I tried the current in the drugstore you recommended to me and I thought it was quite good.

I have never been lucky with Caron perfumes. This past weekend I put away from my cabinet almost half bottle of Nocturnes that I got last year in a swapmeet. At the beginning I enjoyed it and then I could not wear it anymore. The same with Nuit de Noel. They need to be rehomed. At least Parfume Sacre has worked for me so far. Let’s see for how long 🙁

Parfume Sacre is beautiful, I have a full bottle. It is my only FB Caron thanks to a generous NSTer.

My Nocturnes is from a sample…

Perfumelover, have you tried Caron pour homme? If you like lavender and vanilla is great..even though its marketed for men.

Yes, I finished a decant of Pour Homme last year, but I did not like it much. Agree that Parfume Sacre is wonderful. I am thinking about trying the Intense version later on. But for now, I will keep enjoying the original one.

          • Lovestosmellgood says:

Beside Parfum Sacre the only other one I swooned over was aimez moi
Pour Homme is a great relaxing scent

Wait..there is an intense version of Parfum Sacre…where have I been?

          • perfumelover67 says:
            23 January 2018 at 11:27 am

The Intense version is supposed to be more incensy and spicy, but very true to the original. Being an incense lover, I will eventually give it a try.

Love that! I grew up on an orchard and Mom and I would often have pie for breakfast – we made them with the fruit that fell under the trees and very little sugar. A la mode with a little yogurt instead of ice cream.
            Yum.

I’m un-hoarding today in Guerlain Vol de Nuit Evasion from a small decant. It doesn’t have much in common with VdN except for the warm vanilla base. Pretty, peachy floral and it’s cheerful for this grey, rainy day.

Thus far it is the only scent I have sampled from this brand and I love it. There is something about it that reminds me of the earlier Jo Malones…it’s light and ethereal but not fleeting as I believe it might be parfum strength….to my nose it is similar to Jo Malone’s Orange Bitters with a bit more lavender and something different (I believe there is a note in there of a plant that is indigenous to an island whose name escapes me…I will research and get back to you). The brand is Australian so I am sure you have heard of them 🙂

Echoing what others have said: lots of Parafilm and tape and bubble wrap I’ve saved from packages I’ve received or that I’ve purchased from a Uhaul store. Boxes if they’re FBs, padded envelopes if they’re decants. I pack things tightly so they don’t have room to roll around, and tend to tape smaller decants together for the same reason. Good luck!

Parafilm is hard to find, imo. And pricey on Amazon. Currently I use electrical tape. I like it bc it’s easy to unwrap then rewrap decants and samples. I’ve used plumbers tape as well, but it can be hard to rewrap once you’ve unwrapped it. ????

How considerate of you! It usually seems to me there are so many other smells at the hair salon that no one would notice if I had anything on. (In fact I am kind of demanding about sniffing any products my stylist wants to put on my head because some of them smell so vile.)

Still scent free thus far, but planning on TF Shanghai Lily post workout on a cold, dark, wet morning. Also just added the Kusmi Troika to my Amazon cart, along with Prince Vladimir. I’ve been meaning to try Kusmi for quite a while now, but have been working my way through (and enjoying) the Numi range locally. Also participating in pie day with leftover cauliflower and shallot quiche for lunch, so ticking all the boxes today! ; )

I have mixed feelings about Kusmi and frequently regret the ones I buy before the tin is out. My favorite might still be Violette, but it isn’t something I want to drink all that often.

Ah – good to know. Maybe I should rethink my cart then? What do you like for a mid-price range tea brand? I love Mariage Freres (the admittedly few I’ve sprung for), but they are on the higher end of my price spectrum, and I drink an awful lot of tea. My favorite Numis are no longer stocked locally, and I’m a bit bored with Tazo. I’ve been enjoying Taylors Lapsang Souchong and am looking for a good green jasmine – Taylors is a bit light on the jasmine . Any ideas? Tx!

No! Don’t rethink it! I’m quite fond of many Kusmis. Have you tried Mighty Leaf? Not super pricey, but in my opinion, muuuuuuch better than Tazo. (For context, I am fond of many Numis and Mariages Freres and Palais des Thes, though I tend to go for not-famous tea companies that have super cute packaging.)

I’m not much of a Kusmi fan either. I got a set of the Russian teas in mini sizes, which is just a great way of figuring out whether you like them or not. Some are ok, but on the whole I’m not thrilled. Now Mariage FrĂšres is another story all together.

I would say absolutely try Kusmi because the style might suit you — they have some sampler tin sets that are worth a look. I just wouldn’t buy lots of large tins until you’ve tried them! I probably have about 6-8 tins at the moment and I just find I go through them too slowly because I reach for other things first. I like to have the Violette on hand — nobody else makes such a good violet tea — and I have come around to the buffalo grass one. The rest I think I will not replace.

I often regret Mariage Freres purchases too, but there are more MF teas I love than Kusmi. If you like flavored teas, MF and Palais des Thes are both nice.

I am a big fan of Upton for “regular” unflavored teas. I like Tea Trekker too, but they are not cheap.

Harneys is also a good middle of the road company, and they have a nice Yin Hao jasmine.

I’m a fan of Upton and Harney’s, I’ve enjoyed several, the jasmine in particular which is quite nice.
Taylors of Harrogate has a lovely Rose black tea but I’ve been unable to find it.

Lupicia tea is wonderful, their Paradise green tea is my favorite, enjoyable both hot and iced (if iced, add a splash of lime juice).

Driving home at lunch to check for a delivery from Spain via the Bay of Dior Midnight Poison. Gamble since I’ve never smelled it before. Gamble b/c of fakes. Took months researching, waiting for good one to pop up. If it’s bad, live and learn. If it’s good, I’ll be showing back up at work wearing a less than appropriate scent. ; )

Even though I woke up pretty early for a day off, I’ve been pretty lazy but with a lot on my mind. Annoyed with the post office because my W-2 came in the mail but not my STC package. The post office said that it had no access but I had gotten the rest of my mail. Yeah, I don’t get it. I think that I shall file my taxes in the later part of March. Today I am wearing vintage Mitsouko.

    Happy Pie Day, indeed!

    1) In Boucheron, because of course.

    2) Am looking at real estate (again) and I think it is a weird mugs game. I bought my home in 2016 for $215K, and I am happy I did. Now the place down the way from me- smaller and not as well kept- is asking $325K. This is nuts.

    3) Rain is back, but there was a sunny break in the evening yesterday, which was so beautiful! So my outfit is a shirt tunic, cardigan, skinny jeans and sneaker boots- perfect layers.

Because it’s been hot and muggy I’ve been going for early morning walks around the local cemetery . Yesterday the scent of roses was overpowering. There are a few damask roses and they are rich and spicy. To get from the cemetery back to the playing fields i have to cut right across the grave of Helen Scott who died aged 41 in 1899. I have no idea who she is and her grave is in a bad way. Because it doesn’t feel right to just walk over her grave I usually stop and talk to her a moment and describe the scents or the roses or how many rabbits are hopping about on the grass. She’s on a slope with a good harbour outlook, in a beautiful quiet corner. Yesterday I left her some bright pink petals. I wonder what she was like? Wearing Ostara at the moment.

Just found this. Gosh, she’s beautiful. In a weird twist…she is from the Bealey family and a place called Bealey Spur ( a beautiful mountain-bush track, part of the original Bealey run) was one of my father’s favourite places for tramping etc. and we used to go there together a lot. Some of his ashes are scattered there. Spooky.

In Myrrh & Tonka. Not a favorite. I do like it better than when I first tried it. The problem is that I get the mothball-essence of lavender without the mint/floral that makes me love lavender from this one. Ever made a soup, like butternut squash, and it tastes okay but it still needs a few dashes of apple cider vinegar and Tabasco to set it just right? That is how I feel about this perfume. It needs a dash of something. Stewed fruit? Powder? Leather?

I have not done anything from the community project this week as I am still sampling my recent Luckyscent order. I’m a bit peeved that they substituted Ummagumma for my requested Feu Secret. I had already tried Ummagumma and it was a no-go. Anyway, today’s sample is Rundholz 03.Apr.1968, a twisting ride on an incense roller coaster. Sometimes it’s sweet, sometimes it’s dry, sometimes it’s fruity. Very fun to wear.

Luckyscent did that to me one time too, probably just a mistake. But I emailed them about it because it was a sample order that I’d paid for and they made it right.

Feu Secret smells slightly different every time I wear it. It’s truly lovely.

Today is my Love’s birthday. I made him breakfast (which is a big deal for me because I usually get up just in enough time to do my hair and throw clothes on for work lol) and have a nice dinner planned- steak, lobster, asparagus, etc. My birthday is Thursday so we split the difference and go out for our bdays on the 24th haha.

I’m in need of some suggestions… I will be spending the rest of this week in meetings all day, 30 people in a conference room. Joy. So my favorite winter scents are Right Out (much too much for long-term close quarters). Need to figure out what I should wear that will last all day but in a subtle sort of way. What would you pick?

Floris Honey Oud for this warm sunny day. In general, neither honey nor agarwood work for me but I enjoy wearing this perfume.

Just heard on the radio that Delta Airlines is changing rules for bringing “service” animals on board and I’m not sure how I feel about it: on one side, it’s good that they’ll stop people who abuse that “emotional support” angle, but on the other, I’m afraid that it’s people who really need those pets would suffer.

I have to say I know people who have gotten ‘service animal’ vests for their (incredibly ill-behaved) pets just so they can bring them anywhere; anyone can buy that stuff on the internet, no questions asked. It’s unfortunate that those who abuse the system are making problems for those who have legitimate needs.

I am wearing vintage Coco edp. I had a rough night yesterday at the emergency room for MIL till 2 A.M. and saw the worst and the best.
I saw a policeman bringing in a homeless person and giving him life advice for half an hour, I couldn’t believe how nice he was , I was going to congratulate him but then I was shy , then I saw the unbelievable bad state of our hospitals and how fragile our mind is, that we can loose all our memories (most of the patients including my MIL had dementia, alzheimer).
I decided to use up all my best perfumes that I was keeping for some better day, I think this will be my perfume related New Year resolution.

Years ago, I shadowed a friend of mine on her night shift as the first person you see in the ER – I thought I might be interested in that work, but quickly realized it wasn’t for me. Sitting at the gate for my flight back to NYC. Stopped in duty free thinking they might have Elisa P’s latest scent but nope. So, each wrist has JM French Lime Blossom and the top of my wrist near thumb has Chanel No 19 EdP. I so rarely see the latter…almost always EdT it seems. I think I prefer the edp

Hoping For space for my bag. I’d prefer not to gate check. I love that Jet Blue goes out of Intl terminal here. At this time of day it’s an incredibly short security line.

The on-board crew seemed surprised that we were told there was none. They actually unnecessarily created a logjam on the jetway.

I’m having trouble processing the idea of Pie Day in January, but I’ll get over it. I’m in one of my first loves, Safran Troublant. Perfect in any weather 🙂 I’ve developed quite a heavy hand with this one–I gave myself a solid six sprays or so. As a result, it still smells good six hours later, but I think it’s on its way to disappearing. I just do not know how to make ST last any longer on my skin.

Wearing my original sample of Biblioteca de Babel from my first ever Luckyscent order. Fueguia definitely reformulated their line because this one doesn’t smell the same as it does now. I prefer the reformulated actually, which is a delicious gingersnap scent. This one is sharper and not sweet at all. Doesn’t really do anything for me.

    In L’Instant.

Not feeling well today…stomach is off and I came home from work early.

I am reporting to a new manager at work and on a high-profile project that is under great scrutiny right now. The joy. 😉 I think I have a minor stomach bug but am also pondering if the stress is getting to me…I usually have a stomach of steel. Not to be confused w/ Abs of Steel. 🙂

Oh no — do hope you’ll get the stress under control, She-ra. (And get rid of the stomach bug, of course.)

Late to the party, but like the saying goes, “Better late than never”!
My SOTD is Modern Muse Chic from Estee Lauder. I don’t consider this a winter fragrance, more or so whenever the mood strikes me to wear it. I really appreciate the EL line of fragrances. They are well done in my opinion.

    SOTD = Serge Lutens Chergui

Whenever I wear this (not often enough), my brain converts Chergui into a verb as in “.Did you chergui?”

For those who didn’t like this on first try. I say try it again and spray way more. My first time trying this was the equivalent of two delicate spits and it smelled like bug spray (yucky). I decided to go all out abd the next thing I knew, i ordered a tester bottle from Fragracenet!

I should probably wear it soon while I have some winter left 🙂

SOTD- Lush Rose Jam body wash, followed by Argan body creme and Tauer’s Rose Flash.
I wanted a nice fresh clean & Spring like vibe ….
    Feels good!.

Will come back to read later, but I am joining Robin in Slowdive. It’s been on for about 6 hours. Lots of honey, some tobacco and tuberose. Not sure I need another honey scent but it’s very well done.
