Monday scent of the day 1/22

Posted by Robin on 22 January 2018 225 Comments

Monday! Plus, Hot Sauce Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I’m wearing Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Fumée d’Or, one of the fragrances she released in conjunction with the Denver Art Museum's Brilliant: Cartier in the 20th Century exhibit.

Reminder: on 1/26, wear one of your "top 10 of winter" fragrances (unless it's summer where you are, in which case wear one of your "top 10 of summer" scents)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image shows Cartier "Earrings with engraved stones, 18K white gold, set with aquamarines, tanzanites, moonstones, onyx and 82 brilliant-cut diamonds totaling 0.68 carats", $84,000.

    Taking a long Slowdive from Hiram Green. Lots of honey/beeswax.

    Hope your Monday is off and rolling well!

      It was a nice experience but I dont think Id want to wear it on a regular basis. But I am glad I have a sample. :)

    After the power of suggestion last night, today’s a good morning for Teo Cabanal’s Oha. This is a vivid rose that really hits you like a javelin, perfect for a Monday already full of spears. Though it is incredibly petal-like, it works on my skin and the animalic dry-down fits well into any kind of day underfoot. It is definitely a perfume-Cholula. Happy Monday.

          I know this is really late, but maybe you’ll see it. Winter go to rose is tough b/c there are so many dark roses to choose from. My best roses that I always love are Caron Parfum Sacre, OJ Ta’if, Guerlain Nahema, FM La Fille de Berlin, AG Ce Soir ou Jamais, Guarlain Rose Barbare, Miller Harris Rose en Noir.

    Wow…those earrings.

    I am going to be in 31 RC EDT shortly.

    Also I have picked an “amount” for perfume spending this year of $100 a month or $1200 for the year to include FBs, splits, decants…the whole enchilada. There was no particular science behind this amount and I don’t think I’ve actually come close to spending this amount on fragrance in previous years but we shall see what happens in 2018. I was paying Xmas bills for gifts, etc. online this weekend…and thinking…hmm, how did I spend so much?…and how sad none of this was perfume-related spending! ;) Funny how the mind works.

      That’s my perfume budget too! I rarely spend it all but I do feel so much more freedom knowing that I have budgeted for this, so I can not feel guilty about spending what I do spend.

    Was going through some samples and decided on vintage Paco Rabanne La Nuit, which was instant H A T E when it was launched: it took me decades to try it again (and instantly love it) — soapy rose up top, then more and more glamorously filthy as the hours tick by, all civet and oakmoss and leather.

    And then I had an idea for a community wear! I don’t think this has been done, Robin, although you’d know better than I would: Opposite Day. La Nuit on a bright sunshiny day, Matin Calin in the afternoon, Voile d’Ete in the depth of winter or Winter Delice in the middle of July, Aromatics In White when you’re dressed all in black.

    I am wearing by Killian’s Stairway to Heaven with Lemon, mostly because this year I am making an effort to use up my old samples, and this is in one of those manufacturer spray sample vials that evaporates so quickly when you’re not looking. The scent is nice, but I know it was a limited edition, so it really is use it or lose it time.

    In Yves Rocher Accord Chic. A nice, pleasant and simple balsamic floral perfume which is very office friendly. I had the last sprays of my full bottle this morning and I am relieved that another fb is finished. I will not miss it. Let’s see how many more, including decants I can empty this year.
    Happy Monday everyone!

    I pulled some samples and decants that were things that I either thought would be good for winter, or which I love all year round. First up is a sample of Cuir Ottoman. I’ve worn this before and liked it. On the second wearing, it seems just a little too powdery. I think that it is still worth considering the purchase of a decant, to see if it is different when sprayed.

      Parfum d’Empire house twins!
      If you like Cuir Ottoman, you should give Cuir X a shot. It’s a La Parfumerie Moderne fragrance done also by Marc-Antoine Corticchiato.
      They are quite similar but Cuir X is softer I think.

    You smell wonderful, Robin! Fumee d’Or has been on my DSH list for a while now, but everytime I go up to her studio to buy it, I get distracted by her latest releases and, well, squirrel :-( .

    We had to shovel out from under 6″ of snow this morning, then battle icy roads, all to come into the office to sign our furlough notices and go home. I decided I needed an extra jolt of caffeine to greet the morning, so I chose DSH Cafe Noir, my favorite coffee fragrance. Spicy, woody, and even a skosh floral, overtop delicious, freshly ground dark roast. f only I could get a latte that tastes as good as this smells!

    Happy Monday, all!

        I’ve been neglecting it for too long. I used to layer it with her Au Lait, which made for a sweeter latte scent, but ran out of the latter a few years ago, and anyway, now I love it on its own.

    CB I Hate Perfume In the Library today. Just because. But I need to start thinking about my favorite winter scents – the wind was cold and icy while walking my dog this morning, so there is my inspiration.

    Those earrings. Really beautiful as art. But SO not my style. (I’m almost always, but not ALWAYS, in simple chunky small white gold hoops.)

    Have a great Monday, everyone. Job hunting here. Ugh.

    SotD is Hinoki, CdG

    Yesterday I saw Empire of scents (a.k.a. Le Nez) on Netflix.

    I dont think it offers new insights for most perfumistas here, but its an entertaining documentary with some interesting people/talking heads (Chandler Burr, a truffle hunter, Olivier Roellinger, a wine expert, a neuroscientist, a tea ceremony master and more). Also the guy who made Vulva, he was the most boring person of them all haha.

    Grace Coddington today, because it’s the only rose-forward sample with me. Nice to have as I look out at the drastically pruned rose bushes in my dad’s backyard.

    Also nice to feel pretty as I spend my last day here vacuuming, dusting, laundry and general cleaning. My oldest sister lives nearby so she usually bears the brunt of those responsibilities. Least I can do. Will be tough to leave. I swear, if I were single, I’d move in with dad and cherish every minute left.

    Amusing moment with friend in N-M at the Guerlain counter. She saw Shalimar and commented about only old ladies wearing it. I corrected her. She is not interested in fragrance…her obsession is jewelry, handbags and shoes. Far more spendy obsessions….we aren’t talking costume jewelry here….

    Wow, those earrings are spectacular. I wonder what it’s like to be able to afford earrings that cost as much as a luxury car.

    Wearing Atelier des Ors Iris Fauve from a split today! I love the AdO scents so much. The bottle and the gold flakes get a lot of hate, but their scents work perfectly on me. Besides, I am fond of the heavy glass bottle with its sun rays emanating from the center. From the back, the gold flakes look like they’re spinning in circles. And the cap has a nice, heavy feel to it, too.

    Speaking of AdO: Would anyone be interested in a split of Cuir Sacre if I got it in time for the Feb splitmeet? I love it enough that my 5-mL decant just won’t cut it, but do I really need 105 mL? I don’t think so, and besides, $275 is a lot of money to spend on one scent.

        Hmm…it’s got a nice, spicy (oriental), warm base with plenty of saffron and cardamom and a touch of incense. The leather is very elegant, and it has some of the suede-y feel of Daim Blond with none of the accompanying fruit. It’s like sticking your nose into a new, very expensive leather purse while wearing Safran Troublant, while your friend is standing next to you wearing Olfactive Studio Lumière Blanche.

            Haha, oops. If I think of any other comparisons, I’ll let you know :) Have you smelled any of the other AdO scents? They share kind of an AdO-ade, just as most Tauers seem to have a Tauerade, so that might give you an idea of what to expect. If you like warm, comforting, hug-like orientals, I don’t think you can go wrong with Cuir Sacre.

            (Forgive me if I’m mistaken, but don’t you live in the southern hemisphere? I should perhaps have specified that I’d split in the US.)

        Sequoia has purity and clarity and straightforward-ness that makes me think it would layer well with many things. And cedar is probably my second favorite base note, after vanilla which is forever number one.

    I tried Slowdive yesterday and I think there is a bottle in my future, but I want to compare it to Absolue pour le Soir. I don’t think I need two honey scents in my cabinet, and it is all honey with a tiny bit of floralcy–I get no tobacco at all. Today I’m wearing SAUF Contre Bombarde 32, which turns into a very nice warm incense on my skin.

    Earrings are stunning! I’d love a pair myself.

    SOTD: Dior’s Feve

    Just made a new pot of earl gray with a touch of vanilla tea. Working away here at home. My husband has one of the NYC Ballet dancers coming over to pose for him at 2pm. That should be fun to meet her. We’ve actually just bought tickets to see Romeo & Juliet for Valentine’s Day. I love the ballet but I especially love Prokofiev’s music.

      Oohh… I’ll have to tell this to the friend I mentioned in my post. Her other obsession is ballet. She has season tickets at SF Ballet, and was at the gala opening the night before I saw her. She knows many of the dancers, so she’d be thrilling if she were in your shoes.

      The Romeo & Juliet music is absolutely beautiful. Enjoy!

    Etro Sandalo, for an unexpectedly bright cool day. I don’t know if it is one of my top winter scents, or just a decant I reach for when I want (real, old) sandalwood quietly humming along all day…

    Love those earrings, but honestly they’d look just as nice in a costume jewelry incarnation, methinks.

    L’Occitane Ambre is my SOTD, purchased last year when they briefly re-issued it. It’s a nice orange amber. I haven’t worn it since last winter, enjoying its sunny warmth today.

    Well, I’m here rather late, but started out the day with Histories de Parfums Ambrarem Editions Rare. That’s primarily because I had a medium-sized decant of it with me in my travel bag but it does fit the theme of our project this week because some kind of amber would have to be in my top 10 of winter list. And this might be it, except that it has a strange metallic tang to it. I tried this and their Petroleum together and ended up buying a full bottle of the latter; sometimes I think a bit of that weird oud smell, or whatever, has sneaked into my decant of Ambrarem. I began my slide into the rabbit hole with amber scents and I do have my favourites…. I hardly wear this note any more, but now that I’ve re-tried it, I’m thinking that I should. We have a cheery sunny day after a lot of fog and clouds and rain, in the 60’s, very nice weather for now. I’m taking it easy. Is anyone else watching Season 2 of Victoria? Very sad last night.

      I’m watching Victoria, just finished the second episode. It’s great entertainment. Looking forward to watching the latest one tonight or tomorrow. It takes me forever to get through because I keep pausing the video to look at the clothes and interiors.

    Wearing Aroma M Geisha Noire, which arrived in the mail today. Starts out very vintage-y then settles into a lovely vanilla. Thumbs up from me! Thanks elisap & others who inspired this purchase.

    Oh, and I tried Eau de Missions again this morning on “clean” skin, and still got loads of wood and not much vanilla. I have a hard time with a lot of woody scents, though. My skin (or nose) tends to amplify them and they often turn sour. EdM didn’t turn sour, but the wood notes were still overwhelming. Maybe I’ll try it in warmer weather and see if that changes anything.

      EdM didn’t work for me either. I had a bottle but ended giving it to my nephew. He loved it. It’s has a boozy edge on me, which I don’t love.

    SOTD has been Serge Lutens “Ambre Sultan”. A worthy Winter favourite, if ever there was one. Didn’t do too badly at the weekend either , wearing perfumes that:
    – were FBs not samples;
    – suited to Winter;
    – suited to our programme cutover weekend.

    Saturday was BeauFort London “1805 Tonnerre”, for going into battle;
    Sunday was Jovoy “Faites vos Jeux”, when the whole thing was in the balance.

    Now it’s Monday and if I say things are going fine, I mean the levels of chaos and people running around with their hair on fire are containable and lower than expected. :^D

    Unrelated matter – that was a very powerful piece that Halsey read. Sobering, in 2018.

    I’m certainly late today, and I can’t even say it’s because I’ve been so busy – more that I’ve been so lazy!

    SOTD is one I have always liked in winter, Pacifica Tibetan Mountain Temple. It looks as though they no longer sell bar soap; such a shame as this was a lovely soap as well.

    I’m interrupting my streak of “Bottle Love” to retry a sample from the stash. SOTD = Byredo Gypsy Water. This is a rather quiet and well mannered scent on me. I think I have one more wearing of it in the sample vial.

    Was able to (finally) sample Gucci Bloom earlier today. Meh. Initial reaction: Oh that’s Eternity meets Polo Sport Woman meets L’eau d’Issey. Felt more like sniffing the inside of a time machine than a new surprise, but then again this only speaks to my reaction to the hype. The fragrance is nice. Very big-yellow waxy floral. Am I crazy with the triple-threat flashback?

      You just named three of my perfume nemeses. I didn’t get any of those from Bloom. To me it had similarities to Marc Jacobs, or a real toned down and cleaned up Carolina Herrera (original) I think it smells pretty modern though, compared to the ones I mentioned.

        Hmm. I can’t say I had those impressions. I don’t have any problems with it, I guess I was just expecting something newer? less derivative? Never cared for Eternity for Women much, and was indifferent to L’eau d’Issey, but Polo Sport Woman — easily bathed in it, mid- to late-90s.

    If I had $84k, I would buy simpler earrings and go on an over the top vacation!

    SOTD = Guerlain Cuir Beluga

    This is in my Top 10 ever and is a perfume I associate primarily with winter.

    Last year when I installed TurboTax, I got the message that unless I upgraded the Operating System on my mac, the 2017 software will not be supported. For almost a year, I considered buying a new one instead of upgrading the OS (yeah, I know, a first world solution for OS apathy); the Apple store did not make it easy with all the snazzy laptops, even one in Rose! Gold! Anyway, I took the plunge this weekend and … upgraded the OS to High Sierra. It took a day and a half. I didn’t think it was going to take this long but it did; thank goodness I did not have to babysit it the entire time. I was also able to install the 2017 Tax Year software so now I I‘m ready to roll. Next “project” is to switch out all the ink cartridges so I can start printing again!

      I always think of you when I think about Cuir Beluga. Good luck with your taxes & upgrade, we are just about to embark on that arduous chore (we have to file 8 tax returns a year between the two of us, it is hell).
