Wednesday scent of the day 1/3

Posted by Robin on 3 January 2018 179 Comments

Hump Day! Plus, Chocolate-Covered Cherry Day, the 10th day of Christmas, and John Ronald Reuel Tolkien's birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm waking up with Hermès Eau de Pamplemousse Rose.

Reminder: on 1/5, we're doing Color My World...wear a perfume with a color in its name. If you don't have one, tell us what color you think matches your perfume. Suggested by Pyramus.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

SOTD is Chanel Beige. Sunny and warm on this rainy day.

And I already have that one lined up for tomorrow! I wouldn’t have thought it but I could do weeks of ‘color my world’.

Same. I knew I could do a full ‘color my world’ week, but it turned out I have enough for 3-4 weeks.

You know, sometimes I think Beige is trying too hard – like someone who wants to appear a happy and perfect person, but in reality things are not quite so sunny in their life. However, today it indeed smelled happy and carefree to me.

Orange Sanguine to remind me of summer on this chilly morning. Just a dusting of snow overnight as the kids head back to school.

I am wearing Memoire Liquide Encens Liquide lotion topped with Avignon. It was -31 C when I woke up this morning, and the frosty black of the Avignon and the misty grey of the lotion seemed perfect.
Avignon to me is the smell wafting out of an old stone Catholic church into the surrounding snow and pine trees on a bitterly cold Feb day
Major storm expected to slam us tomorrow, so I will wear something soothing tonight.

Did I mention it was -31 C this morning?? 😀

Equestrian today to start a long haul of days.

RIP Sue Grafton. I’ve been reading about Kinsey’s adventures since the 80’s. It’s like losing a friend.

Oh, how sad! I love these books though haven’t read one in many years, so my first thought on reading this was to wonder whether she’d made it to Z, and I found this wonderful quote on Wikipedia: “Her daughter said Grafton would never allow a ghostwriter to write in her name and ‘as far as we in the family are concerned, the alphabet now ends at Y.'”

Someone else is sure to write a “Z” volume though, I bet. I used to read them but got tired of them as they began to be too formulaic, and I just never liked her tough self-sufficient character…. somehow too perfect in that role without interesting flaws or eccentricities.

          3 January 2018 at 1:51 pm

That tough self-sufficiency is the exact reason I liked the character so much. I guess heroines are just like perfumes: very subjective and individualistic. ????

One of my all time favorite authors. I have read the entire series up to Y twice. I thought I had read that she completed Z and it will be released in 2019.

According to what her family said, she had not even begun “Z” yet as she was having difficulty finding inspiration and was kind of laid low by the CA. Very sad.

I have a similar relationship with LHB. I used to love it and wore it a lot, but I’m never in the mood for it now, though occasionally I’ll wear a bit at night. It’s partly that I don’t tolerate certain sweetness levels the way I used to.

Wearing Creed Pure White to the funeral of a distant cousin who would have been 102 on her next birthday. At that age, the funeral can only be a celebration of a life well-lived.
In other news, I have used the holidays to make the decision to retire at March Break. I love my job but it is time. I took my “long walk in the snow” (a quote from our present Prime Minister’s father’s retirement announcement) and have just decided I want more time to spend with my grandchildren, read, travel and pursue some volunteer activities. I’m excited and wanted to share the news.

    SOTD DSH Caravan Spice

I’m going to assign the color “burnt sienna” to this scent – probably more because of the name than the scent.

I immediately smell something recognizable but can’t but my finger on it….there is the musky cocobutter I smell with a few DSH perfumes, , and it smells “churchy” to me, maybe some candle wax, but a little sweeter than church incense – OK – It’s make-up inside a leather handbag in church.

I’m wearing the very underrated Les Parfums de Rosine La Rose de Rosine. This perfume house is still independant, unlike Goutal which was bought and sold many times over to finally become something completely different in the end. Here, same concept and same lovely old-fashioned packaging.
La Rose de Rosine is classic floral, not as edgy as La fille de Berlin but quite beautiful, high quality and special in and on itself.

Just read the article on Goutal about the changes..now I am wondering..do I buy back up bottles of Songes? Or does changing the packaging mean anything will be reformulated…

If that’s a fragrance you can’t live without, you should buy back up bottles. They also seem to have discontinued a few frags too.

Hello all. My SOTD is SL Santal Blanc. I like it all right but it’s not among my top choices either from his line in general or of sandalwood fragrances. Probably not even in the top five of the latter. It’s too sweet and, well, milky somehow. Must be the bits of cinnamon, pink pepper, rose, and/or benzoin I’m picking up on. I love a very dry, herbal, medicinal sandalwood more than this. I’ve got a small decant left of MPG Santal Noble which it seems you can’t get any more and now THAT’s a top choice for me. I wore it on New Year’s day. I think I’m still looking for my Holy Grail sandalwood. I also used to love one from I Profumi di Firenze that was #1 (Sandalo Misore) but that’s no longer available either. We had a hard freeze last night which is pretty unusual for Houston and it kills off a lot of plants and shrubs and all the banana trees, too bad. I brought all the potted plants inside so mine are fine but they are providing a fun jungle for my cats who are tracking dirt and leaves throughout the house. Can’t wait to be able to put them back outside.

I doubt it would be your Holy Grail sandalwood but have you ever tried Lush Smugglers Soul? To me it is a very earthy, bitter sandalwood…The sandalwood in it is not at all creamy or floral but dry and pretty sharp. My favourite recent sandalwood is Concrete. For a spicier, less prominent sandalwood ( i.e. Sandalwood in the drydown mostly ) is Aesop Marrakech Intense…that’s a nice one but not exactly sandalwood. I also like SL Santal Majuscule but I think that may be too buttery. I’d give the Lush a go if you haven’t tried it.

Went looking for a particular sample today but my (usually well-organized) stash defeated me.

Backup SOTD: Byredo Black Saffron. I wanted to like it but I’m singularly unimpressed. A lot of rubber-chemical leather up top with wafts of cucumber and violet. Four hours later it’s the barest wisp of raspberry rose, no leather left in sight. I’ve found the Byredos I’ve tried before to be more diffuse than I typically like, so I guess I shouldn’t be surprised by my reaction to this one.

Morning, all. Another stupidly early awakening, into the promise of a major summer storm. The gulls are crying, the wind is rising, the kittens are crazy—I can well believe we’re in for An Event. I don’t have a stormy perfume. In fact, I can’t even think what one might be like, but I wish I could, because I would buy it immediately. Something dark and swirling, perhaps, with vetiver and heavy woods? In the meantime, I will have to scent myself with a less dramatic perfume…I reached blindly and got Dries van Noten. All right, not all THAT blindly. I do love this scent very much, nearly as much, in fact, as Black Cashmere, and it always seems to me that they’re kissing cousins, though I’ve never looked up the notes to see what DNA they share.

I didn’t get to enter my quarterly damage yesterday— just got too busy— and now I can’t remember what I had to confess to Donatella. My bottle of 1270, for sure, but I honestly don’t recall whether Dries arrived in this quarter or the one before. Whichever it was, those two were, I think, my only additions. Oh, and Bottega Veneta Velours. Not too bad, really, but 2018 will be a big year for very tightly considered purchases.

An ominous crash requires my attention. Titus and Alexander now climb anywhere that takes their fancy. It sounded like something from the top shelf of the bookcase. I had best go and see what I need to do. Be well, all.

Alex has to see his surgeon today which means another 500km round trip for a ten minute appointment. It could be a lot worse. Drinking tea …it came in the post from YS.UZAC and its a mix of oolong and criollo cacao bourbon vanilla, called Purple Caco Rendez-vous. I see they has a new perfume based on Paul Klee. It sounds good but pretty expensive. Wearing Bois de Vanille layered over Gabrielle because that’s what happens when the walk from the bedroom to the kitchen gets interrupted by numerous randomly placed, attention grabbing perfume bottles . Keep warm ! We might have a paddle in the southern ocean if we get time today!

There’s only 3 specialist surgeons for smashed up femurs and pelvis in the south island…2 in Christchurch and one in Invercargill. The prices on Trademe seem to be cheaper than in places like World, but not bargain. But the free shipping makes a big difference. Fresh, and Cosmetics Now both seem trustworthy ( they are the main traders on Trademe for beauty ). Strawberrynet has free shipping if you buy a non-perfume item with your order (like soap, for eg.) but their stock sometimes seems a bit grubby (literally…dusty)

Am typing on my phone, which just cracks up my kids–I usually have to delete and retype each word twice.

    Much to update.

Survived SIL wedding. Sort of felt like we left folks behind enemy lines when we made our departure, but after a week we were done baby done.

Relatives delivered my Caldey Island Lavender (husband: Are you wearing DEET?) and a bunch of travel sprays and samples from Angela Flanders–thanks to everyone who gave me blind buy suggestions.

Wore Rahele to the wedding but had Stephen Jones in my purse for reapplying. Lesson learned. Do NOT apply Stephen Jones with the same generosity and enthusiasm as Rahele. First time I can recall my perfume ever eliciting anger. Oh well ????

I got travel sprays of Precious One (very nice!) and the Tuberose (okay–still warming to tuberose generally) and would be happy to share small samples of each if you are stateside. I ordered the winter rose sampler packet, but stupidly I tossed the cardboard covers to the samples and the names of the perfumes, written in gold cursive, on the sample vials quickly wore off in transit. The two most memorable samples of the ones I ordered were Cachou (very summery, girlie in a good way, roses and raspberries, lots of fun) and Ottoman (just gorgeous!).

The Earl Grey has dried down to something more reminiscent of lavender and black tea, and now I want to apply more.

Hello, dear NSTers! Day 2 of work in 2018 is going much better than Day 1 was. And trip to Paris in April CONFIRMED! After about two hours last night of studying calendars and miles and dollars and conversions. That went fast; three days from inception to execution of trip. I don’t think I’ve ever decided on international travel that quickly before.

I also don’t think I knew that that was J R R Tolkien’s whole name. Love LOTR/Hobbit/Silmarillion in theory; very much don’t enjoy reading the books in practice. Hey, did you know that when they made the movie “Bright,” instead of taking Tolkien’s already-beautifully-established languages, they made them up from scratch? Sounds like a wasted opportunity to pay homage to Tolkien.

I’m wearing Neroli Outrenoir! Outrenoir is…kind of a color, right? Inasmuch as “the light reflecting off of black” can be a color (or even a valid scientific concept).

Looking at my perfumes with colours in their names, they all seem to be a bit hefty for my upcoming physio appointment, I think I’ll go with Hiris, which always seems purple to me. I think that’s strongly influenced by the blue bottle.

SotD = Masque Milano Luci ed Ombre

A half-point for “lights and shadows”?

Last evening I wore Jardins de Bagatelle. I craved A Grand Floral after yesterday’s 78 Vintage Green. JdB’s tuberose reminded me of Luci ed Ombre. Wowza, these scents are like night and day. Love them both.

I poured my slowly evaporating sample of Luci ed Ombre into a new spray vial. There are about three wears left (sobs softly). I will miss this one.

Seemed like a good day for Mary Greenwell Plum. We had quite the storm this morning. I watched the shrubs in the yard bending nearly perpendicular to the ground; combined with the torrential rain, it was like a mini-hurricane. Now it’s just cold. Plum is doing the job of making me enjoy the coziness of being inside.
